N-332 EXCUSES SPAIN’S central government batted away criticism of its de­ lays in improving the N­332’s route through Torrevieja.

According to the Ministry of Transport, drafting plans for dou­ bling the lanes to make it a dual­ carriageway has been put on hold because experts decided it would be ‘opportune’ to study new alternatives.

This would enable the Min­ istry to seek the best option ‘from an environmental, func­ tional, economic and territoria’ viewpoint, according to Admin­ istration sources quoted in the Spanish media.

SPAIN’S General Direc­ torate for Roads gave the thumbs­down to a 1,500­home develop­ ment in Cala Mosca.

Not only is this Ori­ huela Costa’s only un­ built area, but the Di­ rectorate pointed out that the project, ap­ proved by Orihuela Town Hall, would have a negative impact on the area’s road traffic and increase noise pol­ lution.

This would adversely affect residents’ quali­ ty of life, the Direc­ torate added, prompt­ ing Orihuela’s Cambiemos and CLARO parties to predict that the report could put paid to the develop­ ment.

CATHERINE from Torrevieja recently demonstrat­ ed that news needn’t always be gloomy.

Maggie Smith from the Asociacion de Voluntar­ ios de Animales, contacted the Euro Weekly News about Catherine’s fabulous €500 donation to ADAT (Association of Defenders of Animals of Tor­ revieja).

Based at the municipal animal shelter, the Al­ bergue in Avenida Los Nenufares, ADAT helps to provide many things not within the town hall’s re­ mit.

At present the shelter has roughly 40 cats and kittens, plus many more in temporary foster care.

Despite the 3.13 per cent cut, association mem­ bers maintained that they will actually be charged more in 2021 owing to the gradual rise in the Cata­ stro’s rateable values.

They are now asking for a greater reduction ow­ ing to the crisis which has ‘mercilessly’ under­ mined residents’ finances and businesses.

SOCIALLY DISTANCED: The Royal British Legion Concert Band in rehearsal.

AT the time of lockdown, the Royal British Legion Concert Band was rehearsing for the Bill Singleton memorial.

This was to be a concert with singers, choirs, dancers and, of course, the Royal British Legion Concert Band, of which Bill was a founder member.

As we are all aware, every­ thing was literally cancelled overnight although the band was booked for many events, includ­ ing the VE and VJ Day celebra­ tions, plus St George’s Day in Vil­

lamartin Plaza and La Zenia Boulevard.

Rehearsals have just started again, with strict Covid­protec­ tion measures in place, including social distancing.

Unfortunately, many events were cancelled including the No­ vember Poppy Appeal Launch and Remembrance Day services in Mil Palmeras and Torrevieja.

On the positive side, the annu­ al Carols in the Square in Tor­ reveija on Friday December 11 has been confirmed.

“Also we hope to be able to perform a similar Carol Concert at La Zenia Boulevard on Thurs­ day, December 17,” Graham Robinson said.

“We are currently looking for more musicians in the strings, woodwind and brass sections,” he added.

Elche fighting Addiction

ELCHE City Council is to set up a plan to fight addictive behaviours with a scheme focusing on an increase of prevention work and awareness campaigns among young people to combat the consumption of drugs.

The City Council has a budget of €190,000 left for programmes to combat addictive be­ haviours and has set up the Deliberative Fo­ rum on Nightlife, which has put the problem of addictions among young people on the table for discussion.

The Forum has been organised according to five sectoral work tables: Alcoholism, Mobility,

Residency, Safety and Harassment, and finally Substance use and other addictive practices.

According to Valera, “it is a task of preven­ tion and awareness, and we start from the base of all the work that we are doing from the Unit for Community Prevention of Addic­ tive Behaviours, and the work that we do with the young population in coordination with the institutes and other agents in pre­ vention.”

The councillor insisted that “we have to do awareness and prevention work regarding drug use and other addictions.”

Cartagena Youth Covid THE Youth Council of Carta­ gena joins the Covid­19 awareness campaign aimed at young people in the re­ gion of Murcia.

The Youth Council, through its volunteer pro­ gram, Implica2 (Committed Young People), will help in the sharing of information and raising awareness on the risks of Covid­19 as well as the contagion prevention measures that have been put in place by the General Directorate of Youth.

The campaign has been launched to give a message of optimism and encourage­ ment to all young people in the region to continue act­

ing responsibly on a day­to­ day basis, with actions key to overcoming this situa­ tion, such as keeping your distance, always wearing a mask and washing your hands frequently.

“With this campaign we intend to remind young people that we have to be responsible and that we must all be very careful and take into account the three main rules (wear a mask, hand hygiene and maintain a safe distance),” said the councillor of the area of Youth, David Martínez Noguera.

This campaign joins the action that began in Sep­

tember from social net­ works of the Department with the same objective.

A YOUNG woman and her boyfriend have been arrested for locking her grandmother in a room at the home they shared in Valencia for two years.

The 72­year­old was re­ portedly not allowed to use the bathroom, and police are looking into whether she was forced to steal by her grand­ daughter, 22, and her 18­ year­old boyfriend.

The couple allegedly put a padlock on the elderly woman’s bedroom door in 2018, and sealed the window to prevent her from leaving the home she owns.

The elderly woman man­ aged to escape when her granddaughter apparently forgot to lock the door. The victim went to a nearby phar­

macy and told a member of staff what had happened.

Investigators from the Family and Women’s Atten­ tion Unit (UFAM) said the pensioner was allowed into the living room on ocasions but couldn’t access the rest of the house, “not even the bathroom, so had to wear a diaper to relieve herself.”

It’s also claimed the grand­ daughter and her partner ‘slapped and harassed’ the el­ derly woman.

Police are investigating al­ legations the grandmother was forced to steal from commercial establishments by the detainees.

In addition, they are look­ ing into whether the pair withdrew money from the victim’s account.

HELP for the dogs CHRISTINE BAILLIE of HELP Murcia Mar Menor recently vis­ ited the Los Infiernos Perrera dog pound in Los Infiernos.

She was given a conducted tour by Denise, a Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters (LIPS) volunteer while Roger Smith, an­ other LIPS member, explained how the centre’s work is split between the dog pound and the association.

Los Infiernos Perrera owns the kennels that house the dogs and cats, while LIPS volunteers rehome the dogs here in Spain although most go to Europe, including the UK and Germany.

LIPS raises the money to pay all the vets’ fees, transporta­ tion costs, import duties and documentation.

The volunteers look after the dogs’ welfare and exercise the animals as much as possible. Great care is taken to en­ sure that the new owners and their homes are suitable for the dog they are adopting.

The following day, Christine presented Roger Smith and Denise with a €2,000 donation to help them carry on their good work.

This is part of HELP’s policy of helping others, including charities within the Murcia region.

Meet the Belmonte girls THE Belmonte Girls meet at 10am each Tuesday at the Belmonte Bar in the square in Catral, adjoining the church.

“We drink coffee, eat bacon sarnies, have a good natter and sometimes do handicrafts,” Sally Realey said.

The group started years ago, meeting at the Wishing Well pub and making many inexpensive handmade projects over time, but lost the habit during lockdown.

Club numbers dropped and the group changed venues, but Sally recently introduced an enthusias­ tically­received simple sewing idea for Christmas which even the least capable sewers surprised

themselves by completing.

“We are frequently approached by new ladies, attracted by our handiwork and laughter who ask if it’s a private meeting or can anyone join in.” Sally explained. “We are delighted to see everyone, of course.” Some Belmonte Girls live alone and enjoy meeting friends for a safe chatty morning and no­ body has to make anything unless they want to.

“Not everybody lives in Catral either,” she added.

Missing boy, 13 THE National Police have launched an ur­ gent public appeal to help find a missing boy, 13.

Alejandro Fructoso Fernandez was last seen in his home town of Elche on Monday morn­ ing, November 9, and was registered as miss­ ing within hours.

The young teenager has brown hair and brown eyes, is 1.6 metres tall and weighs 53 kg.

It is hoped he is safe and well.

Anybody who has seen Alejandro or has in­ formation which may help find him, is asked to call the National Police on 091.

Nothing to worry about THE succession of earthquakes registered recently in Alicante Province are normal for this area, an expert said.

Jorge Olcina, professor of Regional Geographic Analysis at Alicante Uni­ versity, explained that the seismic activity was surprising only because the quakes occurred during a short space of time. A 3.6 magnitude tremor in Relleu in the Marina Baja, was felt over a very large distance in the early morning on November 5 because it was only two kilometres below the sur­ face, Olcina explained.

Dangerous driver A WOMAN, 25, was arrested by Local Police in Malaga on the Costa del Sol for driving more than one kilometre on the metro tracks while three times over the legal alcohol limit.

The officers found a car on the tracks with three blown out tyres after it got stuck at the entrance to a tunnel on Saturday, November 7.

Malaga Metro security guards had requested the presence of the police who had to call a tow truck to remove the vehicle from the tracks.

It was taken to the municipal vehicle depot, while the owner, who was very obviously drunk, was charged with a crime against road safety while driving under the influence of alcohol. She was giv­ en a breathalyser test, which showed she had 0.85 milligrams of alcohol per litre of air in her system.

Malaga Metro reported that only slight damage was caused to the tracks, however, the service was cancelled for two hours, much to the dismay of passengers who said they intended to claim com­ pensation.

The woman had driven the wrong way along Boulevard Louis Pasteur, before going round a roundabout in the wrong direction and had crossed the metro stop near Malaga University Hospital and arrived to the University stop before stalling.

Benefit extension THE Spanish government has been asked to extend bene­ fits for essential services to vulnerable people affected by the pandemic.

Human rights activists pe­ titioned Prime Minister Pe­ dro Sanchez on Saturday, November 7 to extend the moratorium on cuts to es­ sential services for low­in­ come or vulnerable families indefinitely.

Groups such as the Al­ liance against Energy Poverty and the Platform of People Affected by Mortgages reached out to the govern­ ment in an attempt to sus­ pend the interruption of ba­ sic services such as water, electricity and gas due to overdue bills, as it did during the first wave of the Covid­ 19 pandemic.

More than 3,000 organisa­

tions and social movements demanded in a manifesto that the government ensures that vulnerable families who are still suffering through the financial implications of the pandemic, and cannot afford to pay their bills, are not shut off from basic services.

The activists warned that it is the most vulnerable in society who are suffering ­ ‘migrants, women, young people and pensioners’ ­ and that they are ‘at the mercy of companies that might start a wave of cuts of supplies.’

The group went on to re­ mind the Prime Minister that, as recently as October, families who had not caught up on their bills were receiv­ ing warning letters from sup­ pliers threatening to discon­ tinue their services.

Oxygen in cars STAFF at an overwhelmed hospital in Naples were giving suspected Covid-19 patients oxygen in their cars as they queued with ambulances for admission.

Cotugno Hospital in Campania appeared unable to cope with the increasing arrival of coronavirus patients as they walked along the lines of cars handing out oxygen tanks to people with breathing problems.

Campania has the third highest number of Covid-19 cases in Italy, while Lombardy has the highest.

On Tuesday, November 9, Italian government authorities raised Naples to red alert level, with Campania a ‘special observed region.’

Rescue Ship Arrested in Salamanca

SPAIN is set to spend €3.9 billion on a new submarine rescue ship. The rescue ship will not only be able to perform rescue mis­ sions, but will be able to protect the valuable underwater her­ itage of Spain in the form of sunken ships and treasure.

The rescue ship will fill a hole in the capabilities of the Navy, as they currently have limited rescue facilities for submarines.

According to El País, the ship will ‘aside from its military uses, be able to protect Spain’s underwater cultural heritage.’

Building the rescue ship will commence in 2021 and create over 1,000 new jobs in Cádiz.

SPAIN is sending humanitarian aid to help those affected by Storm Eta in Nicaragua.

Storm Eta hit Nicaragua early November and has also devas­ tated Costa Rica, Panama and Guatemala amongst other places. The victims of Storm Eta have seen flooding and land­ slides and many lives and homes have been lost. There are also numerous people miss­ ing. Europa Press reports that AECID, the Spanish Agency for International Development Co­ operation, “will send humani­ tarian aid worth €150,000 to support people affected by the passage of hurricane ‘Eta’ in

Northern Nicaragua.” There is much work to be done to help the victims of Storm Eta.

ALBANIANS who robbed busi­ nessmen’s homes have been ar­ rested in Salamanca after months of surveillance The Guardia Civil’s operation ‘Habitat Trilece’ arrested the group who specialised in robbing the homes of businessmen throughout the provinces of Madrid, Toledo, Salamanca, Zamora, Segovia, Córdoba, Va­ lencia and Murcia, according to a statement from the Armed Insti­ tute. The structured nature of the robberies led officers to assume this was an organised group.

The operation tracked the

gang’s movements south of Madrid, where they had rented a number of expensive proper­ ties. The investigation eventually led officers to a rural house lo­ cated in the town of Zarapicos, where they arrested three men of Albanian origin between the ages of 17 and 43, all of who have prior police records for dif­ ferent robbery campaigns.

Under pressure SPAIN’S Health Law Association has warned the rise in Covid-19 cases and an increase in ‘worrying pressure’ on health personnel have seen a rise in attacks on staff.

In the latest reported incident, a nurse at Petrer 1 health centre had a front tooth knocked out after being hit by a

male waiting for medical assistance.

He claimed he had been waiting for two hours, reports EL Mundo, before he began to shout and threaten staff.

A nurse tried to calm him, and was struck in the face.

The nurse fell to the floor and was bleeding from the nose

and mouth.

President of the Association of Health Law of the Valencian Community, Carlos Fornes, told the publication that “almost every day we receive complaints of attacks against health professionals” and is calling for more resources for health professionals.

WhatsApp Vanishing WHATSAPP messages are now set to vanish after seven days with the launch of a new feature.

The popular messaging service introduced the feature on Thursday, November 5, although it will still be possible for recipients to save the messages.

According to a spokesperson, when the new fea­ ture is on it’s “helping the conversation feel lighter and more private.”

The vanish feature can be turned on by either person in a one­to­one chat ­ and in groups, admins will have control over whether the feature is on or off.

WhatsApp explained that it was starting with seven days “because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent, while remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about.”

Technical stuff: • Messages will disappear within seven days if users don’t open the app • Messages may also remain with a quoted chat, and won’t disappear if the message is forwarded • It will still be possible to preview the message within a notification until WhatsApp is opened.

The recall is for ‘Paprika de la Vera Dulce’ made by Ha­ cendado, Lote number L150719, with a best before date of October 2021. The Canarian Weekly reports that “Mercadona has decided to remove it immediately from their shelves for precaution­ ary measures, after being in­ formed by the health author­ ities of Aragon that this batch could contain salmonella.”

The Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, was unable to attend the celebration mass for the La Almundena festival on Monday, November 9 as she has come into contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid­19, government sources revealed. Ayuso is currently quarantining at home as a preventative measure.

The capital celebrated on Monday a mass in honour of the patron saint of Madris, the Virgin de la Almudena. Although she has tested negative for coronavirus herself, Ayuso did not attend the festivities. Sources have indicated that the regional president is waiting to know the result of the rest of the tests “and thus continue with her normal agenda.”

OPAH: The first warm-blooded species.

A HUGE red sunfish weighing 35 kilos and 1.45 metres in length was discovered washed up at the Regional Park of Cal­ blanque in Murcia at the week­ end.

The species, called ‘lampris guttatus’ or more commonly Opah, is the first warm­blood­ ed species capable of keeping all its organs at a stable tem­ perature and is normally found in tropical waters.

The cause of the creature’s death is still unknown.

The tyre­sized Opah, also known as the moonfish or sun­ fish, is a deep water predatory fish with relatively small red fins adorning its large, round

body, which can grow up to 1.8 metres long.

These fins, which flap rapidly as the fish swims, turn out to be important in generating body heat for the Opah, often found swimming with tuna schools.

Uria Heep star dies Alicante-based Uriah Heep star Ken Hensley has died.

Uriah Heep keyboardist Ken Hensley, 75, passed away at his home in Agos, Alicante on Wednesday, November 4 after a short illness. Details of his passing have not been released, but his death was said to have been sudden. The music star, who moved to Spain in the 2000s, was best known for hits released by the band in the 60s to 80s, such as Easy Livin’, The Wizard, Sweet Lorraine and Lady in Black.

Hensley’s brother Trevor confirmed the news on Facebook, writing: “I am writing this with a heavy heart to let you know that my brother Ken Hensley passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening. His wife Monica was at his side and comforted Ken in his last few minutes with us.” In a career that spanned decades, Hensley appeared on 13 albums with Uriah Heep and was working on a solo album in Spain when he died.

Police on TikTok

THE National Police force has opened an official profile on TikTok, the most popular social network amongst teenagers.

In the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, they hope to reach the younger members of the population, in order to, amongst other things, raise awareness about the importance of using masks and other antiCovid measures. They will also focus on preventing gender violence, bullying and drug use.

The Spanish National Police

force are top in the world for their use of social networks and with TikTok becoming increasingly popular, they have said that they did not want to miss the opportunity to use the App to connect with even more citizens.

They already have 3.5 million followers on Twitter (@policia), expected to reach a million followers on Facebook (@policianacional) within the coming months; their Instagram account (@policianacional) has more than 650,000 followers and on YouTube (@policianacional) they have 67,000 subscribers.

Missing minors

THE number of children and teenagers who have run away from home or are registered as missing in Spain has risen 21 per cent compared to the same period last year.

There are currently 2,839 missing minor cases being handled by social and police authorities.

According to the ANAR Foundation for children and teenagers, the coronavirus has ‘exacerbated the disappearance of minors.’

It said around 70 per cent of children and young people have admitted suffering fear, anguish, loneliness and a lot of uncertainty during the months of confinement and afterwards.

The foundation wants to influence prevention and raise awareness, while offering support through its aid lines, 116 000.

Time capsule A NORTH POLE time capsule tossed from a Russian nuclear icebreaker in 2018 has washed up on the Irish coast.

Conor McClory of Gweedore in West Donegal was checking out the surf at the Bloody Foreland when he came across a steel structure in the sand.

It turned out to be a small time capsule that had travelled 3,800 kms to reach the shores of Donegal in a recent storm, reports Donegal Daily.

The fascinating find contained letters, poems and photographs from North Pole explorers.

Conor said much of the fun has been investigating the puzzling find.

He told the publication he initially thought it was a steel pipe from a ship, but when he saw engraving on the side, he initially feared it could be a bomb.

Valencia Solidarity THE 70 students who train at the VCF Football School in Samos, Greece, are learning the values of solidarity and the importance of helping and collaborating in times of difficulty, as the Valencia school helps earthquake victims.

A week ago an earthquake of 6.7 degrees on the Richter scale with its epicentre in the Aegean Sea hit both Turkey and Greece.

One of the places that suffered the most was the island of Samos where two young people lost

their lives and several hundred people lost their homes.

The Valencia Academy has made its facilities available to the authorities. On the artificial grass, tents have been set up to accommodate families who cannot return home. The situation in Greece is also more problematic because of the limitations caused

by Covid-19. For now, the academy has postponed training however, Valencia expects sports activity to return in the middle of December.

Female first EMILY HARRINGTON has made history and become the first woman to free-climb El Capitan in a day.

She joins just three other climbers who have managed to scale the 3,000ft granite wall in Yosemite national park in California in less than 24 hours.

The 34-year-old reached the top in an incredible 21 hours, 13 minutes and 51 seconds on Wednesday, November 4.

Talking to the San Francisco Chronicle about her achievement in a male-dominated sport, Harrington said she spent years feeling like she didn’t belong and hadn’t earned her place to be a Yosemite climber.

“But throughout this experience, I learned that there is no belonging or not belonging, no formula to achievement up there. I was creative and experimental and I found my own way,” she added.

No patient zero exists THE Coronavirus in Spain did not have the traditional ‘Patient Zero.’ It has been confirmed that originally in Spain there were over 500 entry points for Coronavirus.

Several events held in February 2020 have shown to be how the Coronavirus took such a devastating hold over the country, which lead to the national lockdown in March.

The spaces can be created using paint and concrete blocks and are helping to decrease the air pollution in Barcelona. Tactical Urbanism is not unique to Barcelona, and examples can be seen in New York and other cities.

Madrid Parties MADRID parties have kept the Local Police busy over the long week­ end.

The police have been to 400 illegal parties in Madrid, over the La Al­ mudena long weekend. The parties have been both in establishments that have ignored the new curfew rules and private parties at peo­ ples’ homes. A worrying theme is that social distancing rules seem to have been forgotten at the Madrid parties and masks were not being worn either. Also, there were many breaches of the number of peo­ ple allowed to be together.

The number of Local Police in Madrid has doubled over recent months to enable them to police the restrictions in place due to Covid­19.

Fruitful deal

MERCADONA has announced it plans to buy 1,500 tons of pomegranates of the Elche mollar variety this season, from the province of Alicante.

The supermarket giant is collaborating with Alicante suppliers Cambayas, Frutas y Hortalizas Mas Serrano, Alcudia, all from Elche, along with Orihuela-based Plusfruit and Albafruits, Coop V in Albatera.

This firm has also shown its support for an initiative launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) called ‘Seasonal Fruits

A COLOMBIAN drugs cartel trafficker has been arrested by police after a raid on a luxury villa in Marbella.

In a joint operation with Dutch police, the National Police have arrested a drug trafficker said to be from the Cali cartel (Colombia). The man, initials MAH, of Dutch nationality and Colombian origin, had taken refuge on the Costa del Sol after fleeing from police in the Netherlands. He had lived in a Marbella luxury house since the summer of 2018 until an operation culminated with his arrest.

He is credited with laundering more than €6 million through cryptocurrencies. The money came “from cocaine trafficking,” as explained by the police force.

MAH had recently turned from drug trafficking to money laundering. To do this, he had specialised in cryptocurrencies and had created a company to market them. In his Marbella home, several electronic devices were discovered along with a collection of credit cards connected to accounts with cryptocurrencies. The Dutch authorities estimate that the drug dealer could have laundered more than €6 million in his new job.

Swingers’ party at train station NATIONAL POLICE shut down a swingers’ party being held in commercial premises at the Delicias AVE train station in Zaragoza.

The location was equipped with a bar, tables, sofas and rooms separated by curtains and had been set up by an association for liberal sexual relations.

Officers went to the station following a call from the security guards when music was heard in the middle of the night. They found several people inside who were charged with non-compliance with anti-coronavirus measures, as the party exceeded the permitted number of people on private premises, and was being held after the 11pm curfew.

NEIGHBOURS denounced a party of 30 people without masks on the Costa del Sol. Residents of a property in Benalmádena, Malaga alerted police at around 6pm on Saturday, November 7 to a party in the building of at least 30 people, all apparently foreigners, where nobody was wearing a mark or observing social distancing regulations. This is, of course, completely prohibited under the current State of Alarm.

One of the residents told police: “My parents live below and the noise is unbearable.” Another neighbour said while there are problems in every community, the ones who lose out are the ones who “end up in tubes,” implying that the blatant flouting of rules could lead to a spread of coronavirus.

Police sources confirmed they attended the scene after several complaints and issued warnings to everyone involved. Officials will now fine each participant for a serious infraction under the State of Alarm.

Terrorist Trial Lost

SPAIN has begun the trial of suspects linked to the deadly 2017 van attack which killed 14 people in Barcelona.

Spain’s High Court on Tuesday, November 10, opened the trial of three suspected Islamist militants linked to the attack in which a single attacker drove a rented van into crowds of people on Barcelona’s central La Rambla boulevard.

The attack, Spain’s deadliest in over a decade, caused 14 deaths and injured over a hundred people, with another man killed during the attacker’s getaway.

Two of the accused, a Spaniard and a Moroccan, face charges of belonging to a terrorist organisation, manufactur­ ing and storing explosives, and attempting to cause wide­ spread destruction which are related to an accidental explo­ sion on the eve of the attack that destroyed a house in Alcanar, southwest of Barcelona, where explosives and gas canisters had been stored.

Prosecutors are seeking jail terms of 41 and 36 years for the two and eight years for another Moroccan national who is accused of being an accomplice. They have been in prison pending trial since their arrests in 2017 in connection with the blast and potential connection to the Barcelona attack.

Cost to be cut THE Spanish govern­ ment is considering low­ ering the cost of masks.

The government now considers that the fixed price of 96 cents per unit remains too much for many families.

Consumer Minister Alberto Garzón ex­ plained that they have been very concerned about the price of masks since the begin­ ning of the coronavirus pandemic. It recalls that the government estab­ lished a ‘maximum price control,’ which is an ‘anomaly in a market system’ to ensure that there were no cases such as masks at €10 per unit.

Garzón said setting the price of masks to 0.96 “is reasonable, but for many families, it is still out of reach.”

Visit ban for prisoners

A NATIONWIDE ban on prison visits and a restriction on inmate calls have been announced by Spain’s General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions to curb the spread of Covid­19.

Jails in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands are exempt from the new measures which will last three weeks.

A letter has been sent to all the centres outlining the new mea­ sures to prevent the spread of coronavirus among the prison population, considered a high­risk group, and prison workers.

HSBC announce Cuts Boy racer HSBC is set to cut around 100 jobs in UK retail banks as the group looks to continue its restructuring.

The move comes after the bank announced that it could start charg­ ing for ‘basic banking services’ and was confirmed by a spokesman for HSBC, who said: “In line with the Group strategy announced in February, we continue to restructure and review the roles required to transform the bank.” Similar restructuring of its commercial banking business was announced last month which will eventually result in around 300 more job cuts. Europe’s biggest bank resumed cutting around 35,000 jobs in June, which was the plan prior to the pandemic in March, however, after a delay, it’s now back on the cards with this latest announcement.

Chief Executive Noel Quinn has said the job losses are necessary to re­ duce costs and in turn improve profits, as HSBC grapples with the eco­ nomic hit from the pandemic on its loan books, as well as resulting low interest rates worldwide.

HSBC’s cuts to its UK retail banking business follows a similar move by rival Lloyds Banking Group on Wednesday, November 4.

NESTLÉ’S Purina brand is set to launch a line of pet food using insects as they look to move to­ wards more eco­friendly and environmentally sustain­ able protein sources.

The brand, has experienced strong demand for pet food during the pandemic and are looking to match their com­ petitors by providing options for owners of cats and dogs who want to feed their pets a

different diet. Smaller brands are already offering insect pro­ tein meals for pets, however, the Purina Beyond Nature’s Protein line, which launches this month in Switzerland, will give them strong competition.

Two variations of the insect pet food are set to launch ­ one using chicken, fava beans and protein from black soldier fly larvae, and one using chicken, pig’s liver and millet.

First, they sell to a local restaurant, which in turn prepares the fresh pro­ duce and sells it to local customers.

The farmer pays its local employees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbour­ hood hardware store. This example il­ lustrates how the recirculation of mon­ ey in the local economy leads to a stronger financial foundation for our neighbours and communities.

Buying local also fuels new employ­ ment and job opportunities for people within our community. Studies show, locally owned businesses employ more people per unit of sales and retain more employees over time.

While buying local is financially com­ pelling to our communities; the bene­ fits to our environment are equally im­ pressive. Buying locally reduces the processing of goods, packaging and transportation waste, which leads to less pollution.

There’s a massive cultural shift un­ derway redefining the way people make buying decisions. We’re seeing more individuals concerned about the environment, about how products are made and sourced, where materials come from, and a company’s overall social and environmental impact.

These min­ utes constitute a legal document and if they are not accurate, problems can arise. These minutes ­ the ‘Li­ bro de Actas’ ­ are officially registered in a special section of the Property Registry. And now at the 2020 AGM you will vote on the 2021 budget of ex­ penditures.

SPAIN is preparing legislation that would see a 5 per cent tax on stream­ ing giants like Netflix with the funds used to boost Spanish cinematic pro­ duction, the government has claimed.

The law, which would tax online entertainment platforms on the basis of earnings generated in Spain, seeks to bring existing legislation “in line with the reality of the market where

Investment by Iberdrola

THE energy company Iber­ drola has announced what it calls the “largest investment programme in the history of a Spanish company,” saying that it intends to invest €75 billion from now until 2025 in support of a green eco­ nomic recovery.

The bulk of the new in­ vestment is expected to fo­ cus on renewables projects as well as upgrading net­ works hoping to almost dou­ ble its electricity production over the next five years.

It hasn’t said where the funds will be coming from al­ though the company expects to increase its net profit to €5 billion in 2025, from €3.4 billion last year as a result of this growth.

Ninety per cent of this new investment ­ €68 billion ­ will be organic and will be aimed at consolidating its business model, based on more renewable energy, more networks, more stor­ age and more intelligent so­ lutions for its customers.

Ceuta and Melilla A REPORT by Morocco’s Eco­ nomic, Social and Environmen­ tal Council has concluded that closing the land borders with the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla will not end smug­ gling due to the lack of invest­ ment in the surrounding area.

“The closure of the Ceuta and Melilla crossings by Moroc­ co, and the ban of commercial operations in the port of Melil­ la since July 2018 are effective measures in the short term,” said the report. “However, the closure does not focus on ad­ dressing the deep causes that allowed the spread of smug­ gling.”

Morocco does not recognise Spain’s right to occupy the two enclaves and wants them re­ turned.

Czech GDP overtakes Spain THE latest International Mone­ tary Fund (IMF) survey shows that the Czech Republic is now ahead of Spain for Gross Do­ mestic Product (GDP) per capi­ ta following the onset of the Covid­19 pandemic.

According to the IMF, gross domestic product per capita in the Czech Republic for 2020 equates to 38,120 internation­ al dollars (the IMF converts salaries into international dol­ lars as at 2017 to compare GDP per capita between countries).

The calculation for Spain shows its GDP per capita is at 36,086 international dollars and Czech government spokesman Lukáš Kovanda, believes that Spain is unlikely to recover its previous advan­ tage.

H O V I S w h i c h i s s y n o n y­ mous with brown bread and has been a name in British households for 134 years has now been sold by joint owners Gores Group and Premier Foods (who own the Mr Kipling brand).

It had originally been wooed by an Italian food company Newlat but when private equity firm Endless started a bidding war, the I t a l i a n s p u l l e d o u t a l­ though their offer was ex­ pected to be in the region of £100 million (€110 mil­ lion) so Endless were the winners for an undisclosed sum.

Hovis is a favoured con­ sumer bread brand and is supported by its key cus­ tomers and suppliers. It has seen strong growth in its branded market share

and the business is well placed to capture a further share of the UK’s £4 billion (€4.4 billion) overall bak­ ery category.

With headquarters in High Wycombe, the busi­ ness employs around 2,700 people and operates eight bakery sites, its own flour mill and a distribution net­ work spanning the UK and Northern Ireland.

Explaining the reason for making this purchase, End­ less have said that under the current management team, Hovis has seen a sig­ nificant upturn in trading in the last four years and will continue to drive its strategy focused on deliv­ ering great quality prod­ ucts, customer value and service.

Foreign ‘Tourist’ kills wife

A HUSBAND allegedly strangled his wife at a tourist apartment in Barcelona before handing himself in to police.

Officers went to the address on Lloret de Mar promenade just before 10am on Monday, November 9, where they found the body of a mid­ dle­aged foreign woman. According to the first investigations, the victim had injuries compatible with death by strangulation.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Area of the Mossos (AIC) have launched an investigation in what they are treating as ‘a new case of sexist violence in Catalonia,’ and arrested the ‘foreign suspect.’

Lloret Council observed a minute’s silence.

We simply cannot afford to continue ignoring the fact that we are under a concerted and continuing attack from a sole fanatical enemy. The laxness of the

authorities in the Viennese massacre is almost beyond belief. No doubt they are also hampered by the same ‘politically correct’ dangerous nonsense that affects us all ­ but they really should have been on to this one. This perp had served 22 months for trying to reach Syria and join IS jihadists. He worshipped in a mosque that intelligence services suspected of promoting extremism and a few hours before the attack, appeared on an Instagram post swearing allegiance to IS while holding an assault rifle, a handgun and a machete across his chest. He really couldn’t have been more obvious about his intentions had he announced it on national news!

The West need to completely forget about ‘offending’ anyone, shut the PC brigade down completely and take up a serious offensive against these murderous insurgents. The first thing that needs to be done is to stop any more of them coming in. A multi­ national security border force should be set up, physically preventing every able bodied male from the Middle East entering the West ­ full stop!

For eight years I lived among these people and I can state quite

categorically that most of them simply cannot be trusted. They interpret kindness as a sign of weakness and, despite what they say, a large number of them hate and envy the West and its ‘infidel’ inhabitants. Deportations must become a priority. As a deterrent, whole families of convicted or suspected terrorists need to be removed.

Camps must be set up to house and vet immigrants that do manage to breach security, and separate prisons built for Islamist extremists. ‘No go’ areas operating under ‘sharia law’ must be freed up and made safe for all indigenous citizens and, if necessary, enforced by military armed personnel.

The provocative burka must also be banned. If these tough measures lead to confrontation, so be it. At least we will know who our enemies are!

It is of course a tragedy that innocent and genuine refugees have to suffer for the sins of others, but, if we are to survive this war, I am more than convinced that we simply have no other choice.

There’s still some money around LETTERS FROM

CANARIES DEAR reader, I hope this finds you in top form, untouched by strife or worry?

We’re scraping through down here, having largely escaped the now­to­next­May mainland mea­ sures, so far.

Let’s see how we fare with tourism during what we used to quaintly call high season. Most European coun­ tries are locked down, so we’ll be spared the danger of making too much money.

Luckily, we’ll also be spared the danger of the few arriving tourists bringing us Covid, after the Canarian government decree that nobody en­ ters the islands after 14/11 without a negative Covid test result.

President Ángel Victor Torres is doing a good job in tough times, but he can’t work miracles: over 60 Ca­ narian hotels are currently for sale at prices of between €1 to €30 million.

These pandemic victims, mainly

HASHISH: Is being meticulously examined by police. smaller or medium sized hotels, were KO’d in their fight to survive. Most are in Playa del Inglés, Puerto Rico and Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, a few in Fuerteventura, fewer still in Lanzarote and Tenerife.

Catering for indepen­ dent travellers, they are small scale and often run by just one person who can choose to shut down, plant veg and wait for things to get better, but there are plenty of failing periph­ eral businesses and the highest un­ employment in Spain throughout the Canaries.

On a more optimistic note, life

does continue without tourism.

There’s still some money around and it’s being spent on improving sports facilities, historical sites and future plans, all good for When This is Over.

Gran Canaria’s Athletics Stadium in Vecindario has just been reopened after a €1 million makeover. Island president, Antonio Morales, ex­ pressed satisfaction that: “...this great facility has been renovated to such high standards for the use of the community,” while a more mod­

est project on El Hierro sees work un­ der way to renovate the Centro de Deportes in capital Valverde.

La Fortaleza, a flat­topped volcanic meseta and one of La Gomera’s most emblematic sites, is to be investigat­ ed, mapped and conserved in a long overdue nod to its importance. The original population reputedly took refuge from invading Spanish here, leaping to their deaths rather than suffer capture. This project is one of the many benefits of the island’s ad­ herence to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism.

There’s a precedent here. We could take refuge up there if the neg­ ative test plan doesn’t work out and infected tourists invade, though I’d need a shove to go over the edge.

Those who prefer to take refuge with hashish will be discouraged to hear that the 300 kilos, in nine blocks, found floating between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote is now in police custody being ‘meticulously examined.’

SAFE BUT CLEAN Dear Editor I’M not one to grumble but feel I have no choice but to have a rant about the ‘new wave’ of littering.

It appears empty cans and crisp wrappers have been replaced by masks supposed to be worn on the face, not strewn on the floor.

While I totally accept we are in the middle of a health crisis and the well-being of the nation is paramount, I don’t see how that should be at the expense of the environment.

I’m fortunate enough to live by the sea on the Costa del Sol and love walking along the beach.

But this morning I came across four discarded masks in a short stroll.

We each have a responsibility to protect ourselves and others by wearing a face mask, but surely we also have a responsibility to keep the streets and beaches clean.

I empathise with BA in this week’s EWN I’ve previously had very good treatment at Velez-Malaga Comarcal hospital.

However, last week the consultant I saw was rude, totally unhelpful and dismissive of my extreme pain.

IN the wake of former Vice President Joe Biden’s tight victory in the presidential race, it will be tempting to look at the razor thin margins across the map and declare the nation a house divided.

But there are other more cheering conclusions to be drawn.

American democracy is alive and well.

Votes were counted (and will be recounted), courts will field litigants, state officials will do their jobs. The process was far from smooth, and beyond frustrating to watch, but that is a democratic system in action.

Better still, and despite strenuous efforts to pigeonhole Americans into their hyphenated identity groups, people of all races walked into their voting booths with diverse ideas about the best man to lead the nation... and voted for Republicans in unprecedented numbers.

They did not vote by tribe, they voted for and against policies that mattered in their lives. Are there still divisions among us? Of course, there always will be. But more than 65 per cent of eligible Americans believed in the power of their vote, and our democracy.

In 2020, decency was on the ballot, and more Americans voted to defend it than have voted for any candidate in history. In a year when hundreds of thousands of Americans have perished to a global pandemic, and millions more fear for their livelihoods, they have elected a President whose empathy and capacity to sit with suffering rank among his chief hallmarks.

On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn in as president and vice president, the two embodying a series of ‘firsts’ in their new roles.

Finally, how heartening it is to be reminded that journalistic, tech and business elites do not call elections, and that money notwithstanding the hundreds of millions wasted in trying to do so cannot buy a seat in Congress.

The Show Must Go On Just wanted to say well done to the Rock the Lock Down team.

I read online they have released a new single to raise money for charity.

I’m a singer who hasn’t worked for much of the year because of the pandemic, and I loved Rock the Lock Down.

I felt as though I wasn’t on my own.

They have raised awareness as well as money good on them.

And they haven’t given up, they are keeping going with the new single The Show Must Go On, which I will definitely be downloading. Great job!

SKEWED SUBTITLES THAT LEAVE EVERYONE LOST FOR WORDS IN these uncertain times, at least TV subtitles have a way of helping us to stay cheerful!

A debate on the BBC’s Victoria Der­ byshire show complained that media coyness on gynaecological issues put at risk women’s health. Well, call me old­fashioned, as Dame Edna might say, but the debating panel should have consulted the programme subti­ tles, which avoided embarrassing words and spoke instead of ‘Ghana logical problems’ and something called the ‘regina.’

I’m back at the start but different!

MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED I’M sat in the coffee shop with my Mum and Dad waiting to go in - I’m back at the Mental Health Hospital - damn Covid has meant they can’t come in with me and I have to go in alone.

I feel excited as I have waited so long for an appointment, nervous because I know what is coming next, the leg is going up and down like mad and by this point and I can feel my eyes filling up. Breathe - I get up from the table and walk towards the building.

Heart is racing, hands are trembling, the entrance has changed - it’s not where it has always been, it’s around the back.

Why change it? I can’t get in - I’m going to be late, I can’t be late.

I am once again sat on those cold green metal chairs, the tiles on the wall are cold.

I wish I wasn’t sat there alone, I haven’t had to be here for a long time. I see a friendly face, the nurse that looked after me when I was so poorly in hospital - Breathe.

Plucking up courage to approach my psychiatrist to admit defeat, I need help, I have tried ,but I am now tired of trying.

Sat in the Doctor’s office, she has known me right from the start, nine years now.

I can feel my heart slowing down, I feel safe, I’m glad to see her. She smiles but I can see the worry on her face. She knows that if I am back with her, I am not in a good place.

She listens to me - congratulates me on how far I’ve come, how much I have matured from that scared little girl. I am now a woman who knows herself, and admits when I need help.

She doesn’t just shove me on medication and sends me on my way - no - she listens, she explains what we need to do next in order to help me get through this.

I have done this before , I will do it again Better days are coming, I don’t know when but they will.

Children born later are taller and have more education

NO RUSH: Studies show that having children later in life may be beneficial to them.

IF you want to have successful children, have them later in life as a study has revealed that children born to older mothers are healthier, taller and obtain more education.

Women have often been told not to leave motherhood too late as it can increase the chance of Down Syndrome in the baby, and hypertension and diabetes, and whilst not disputing this, the London School of Economics’ research claims there are also some benefits.

Their study used data from 1.5 million Swedish people born between 1960­1991 to examine the relationship be­ tween maternal age at the time of birth, and height, physi­ cal fitness, grades in high school and educational achievements.

They found that when women had children later, the youngsters tended to be taller, had better grades in high school and were more likely to go to university.

DAVID WORBOYS THIS is not about the glorious city of Granada, but its glorious province. Of all the provinces that I know in Spain; of all the regional units in Europe and beyond, Granada must have the most varied scenery in such a small area. And what scenery!

We could start at the historic coastal town of Almuñecar and take the slow mountain route (A4050) to Suspiro del Moro. The well­surfaced road passes through the fruit­packing suburbs and then past vast orchards of avocado, mango and peaches and through the vil­ lages of Jete and Otivar. As it twists its way upwards towards the heavens, thick pine forests give way to barren white indestructible mountains and massive valleys, hundreds of metres down from the side of the road. Then, far in the distance behind us, the sea comes into view. Higher and higher, we feel we are getting closer to the sky.

Eventually the road reaches its peak.

Then, immediately, round the corner the landscape changes dramatically.

Here is a long, straight flat road through forests of Aleppo pine until suddenly hilly pastures, wheat fields and aban­

Such varied scenery to admire. doned farmhouses appear. Then it be­ comes flatter and drier again until we reach the Suspiro del Moro with its view of the snow­capped Sierra Nevada.

But this is just one of many stunning drives in Granada ­ all completely differ­ ent. There are fabulous views from the fine mountain road from Lanjaron via Orgiva and Pampaneira (A348) to the sublime village of Capileira ­ second highest in Spain and almost touching the blue sky. The lower mountains are clothed in green, although a little parched right now, but never white. The autumn colours in this area are marvel­ lous.

East of the city, towards Guadix (A92), we pass through the Sierra de Huetor with meadows, waterfalls, with snow in

the winter and almond blossom in spring. Pine forests dominate the olive orchards. Beyond Guadix (A92N) with its great cathedral, cold in the winter, the terrain soon becomes lonely, arid and featureless as we approach the province of Almeria.

The steep, winding road to Venta de Zafarraya (A402) also offers spectacular views of towering mountains and deep valleys, remote villages and scattered houses. Once you reach the top, and pass through this village, turning right for Alhama de Granada, the change is unexpected.

The road passes through flat land­ scape, ideal, at this altitude for the huge plantations of tomatoes, lettuce and various other vegetables. Here they are grown, packed and transported, mainly towards the coast. Then we pass road­ side clusters of palm trees past ‘Lake’ Bermejales to meet the A4050.

Starting from Granada City we are heading for the Sierra Nevada (A395), once again a different topography. Be­ yond Pinos Genil, we ascend towards the ski resort of Pradollano. This is Alpine Granada, culminating in Spain’s highest peak, Mulhacen, at almost 3,500 metres.

Filming will be paused for 14 days in line with safety guide­ lines.

Dr Deidre Barrett, clinical and evolutionary psychologist at Harvard Medical School, explained dogs and other mam­ mals are known to have similar sleep patterns to humans.

During the REM phase humans usually dream about what was on their mind during the day and for dogs this is probably their owners.

IT is said that English writer Geoffrey Chaucer first used the expression familiarity breeds contempt. Essentially suggesting long association with some­ thing makes you more aware of foibles and faults, so you lose interest and appreciation.

There’s a counter argument that familiarity is reassuring, proven and reliable. All epi­ thets I would happily apply to Mitsubishi’s Outlander PHEV. Launched back in 2014 it quickly made its mark, and still appears in the top ranks of the plug­in SUV sales charts. Not bad for a vehicle that has only been revised twice since its launch, and testament to its original design.

There is a quoted range of 28 miles on pure electric according to the new, stricter real world WLTP test. I actually managed 36 miles, it very much depends on style of driving, road types and conditions. It’s an impressive range when you consider many much newer plug­in hybrids still hover at this kind of range.

For such a large vehicle its overall economy using hybrid mode was impressive, a mainly urban driving week averaging 5l/100km (mid 50s mpg).

With masses of interior space for five (you lose the seven­seat capacity of non­PHEV models due to the battery) it can double as family car and workhorse.

The interior is perhaps a little old­fashioned in some respects with smaller than average touch­ screen display and plastics that are perhaps not up to some competitors. I suspect they would be more durable!

It does have proper buttons, simple to use controls and all modern comforts, even in the lead­in versions. It is a very nice, refined and comfortable ma­ chine that demonstrates the virtues of familiarity.

Yamaha says the new look is “intended to be more organic

and mature” with an all­new, more compact and new LED headlight, which comprises a central projector main beam, flanked by two vertical riding lights.

The MT­07’s 690cc parallel twin­cylinder engine has also received a major makeover, primarily to ensure compliance

with the new, tighter Euro5 noise/emissions regulations which come into force in 2021.

The new MT­07 will be avail­ able in three colours, ‘Storm Fluro,’ ‘Icon Blue’ and ‘Tech Black’ and is due to be in deal­ ers in March. Prices have yet to be announced.

Re-Leaf Vehicle NISSAN reveals an electric emergency response ve­ hicle concept that has been adapted to be a mobile power supply following natural disasters and ex­ treme weather events.

The vehicle dubbed Re­Leaf is a working proto­ type based on the Leaf passenger car featuring modifications to help it navigate roads blocked by debris as well as weather­proof plug sockets to power 110­ to 230­volt devices using the car’s bat­ tery.

Nissan has been using the Leaf to provide emer­ gency power and transportation after natural dis­ asters since 2011, which, when fully charged, the car’s 62kWh battery could charge the average UK household for six days, meaning there’s plenty of capacity to power equipment on­site.

Helen Perry, head of electric passenger cars and

infrastructure for Nissan in Europe, said: “Through Nissan Intelligent Mobility, we’re constantly explor­ ing ways that electric vehicles can enrich our lives, beyond just zero­emission transportation.

“Concepts like the Re­Leaf show the possible ap­ plication of EVs in disaster management and demonstrate that smarter, cleaner technology can help save lives and provide greater resilience for the future.

Sakho Wins EX­LIVERPOOL player Ma­ madou Sakho has been award­ ed ‘substantial’ damages over drug test error.

Sakho was briefly suspended in 2016 after he tested positive for a fat­burning substance called higenamine after a Eu­ ropa League game for Liverpool against Manchester United in March of that year.

The result of that botched test, for which he has now ac­ cepted substantial damages from the World Anti­Doping Agency (WADA), cost the 30­ year­old defender a place in the Liverpool squad for their Eu­ ropa League Final game against Sevilla.

Sakho, who now plays for Crystal Palace, was cleared in July 2016 by UEFA’s disciplinary body after they found that hi­ genamine was not on WADA’s banned list.
