THE Valencia region’s Tourist Municipalities’ Cooperation Fund has soared ninefold from an initial €500,000 to €4.5 million.

“Marina Baja tourist munici­ palities are going to receive more than €450,000,” the re­ gion’s Director General for Tourism Herick Campos an­ nounced.

More than €180,000 of this will go to Benidorm.

“We have increased the fund to help reverse the com­ plicated situation that tourist destinations suffered this year owing to Covid­19,” he said.

Nothing to worry about THE succession of earthquakes registered recently in Alicante Province are normal for this area, an expert said.

Jorge Olcina, professor of Regional Geographic Analysis at Alicante University, explained that the seismic activity was surprising only because the quakes occurred during a short space of time. A 3.6 magnitude tremor in Relleu in the Marina Baja, was felt over a very large distance in the early morning on November 5 because it was only two kilometres below the surface, Olcina explained.

More employment in Benitachell CLEAN-UP: Benitachell residents will soon notice the difference.

BENITACHELL has a new seven­strong brigade clearing the municipality’s rural roads and open spaces.

They are new employees, working thanks to the Emerge Programme subsidised by the region­ al government’s Employment and Training Ser­ vice (SERVEF).

Following a short training course, the new op­ eratives began by tackling Les Fonts, clearing weeds and potential fire risks amongst the pines there.

This should take around 10 days after which they are due to move on to areas including Los Molinos, Raco de Nadal, Pueblo Alcasser, La Joya, Girasoles and Magnolias.

The new municipal employees have been pro­

vided with a vehicle and forestry equipment and once the outlying roads have been cleared, they will spray them with a non­toxic organic product to keep the weeds down.

By the time the brigade has finished, they will have cleared an area of more than 110,000 square metres, explained Benitachell’s Works and Services councillor Maria Jose Ivars.

Talking to the brigade members during their training course, Ivars stressed the importance of their work.

“Although our permanent brigade regularly clears unwanted vegetation, the addition of sev­ en more people means we can work at a faster rhythm and the local population will soon start to notice the difference,” she said.

Javea came off worst

AS usual, Javea came off badly during the second day of the storms that re­ cently hit the Marina Al­ ta.

Earlier, Spain’s meteo­ rological office Aemet is­ sued an Orange Alert warning, advising that the storm would focus on Javea and the surround­ ing area.

The port area alone registered 100 millime­ tres during the early hours of Thursday No­

vember 5, accumulating a total of 200 millimetres.

The Local Police closed Avenida Libertad, Aveni­ da Fontana and Arenal, evacuating people from several homes that were threatened by floodwa­ ter.

They were also called on to remove fallen trees, collapsed awnings and caved­in walls, but all roads were able to re­ open after a clean­up op­ eration.

Christmas raffle THE Charity Shop of Calpe’s annual Christmas event was cancelled owing to Covid restrictions.

Nevertheless, it is still possible to win a fabulous Christmas ham­ per in the raffle, and there is also a tombola.

Tickets for both are a steal at just €1 each or five for €4 and avail­ able at the shop. The draw will take place on Saturday December 5.

Walk the Nordic way ALFAZ’S Sports councillor Os­ car Perez recently received a Nordic Walking t­shirt from the locally­based club.

There were further t­shirts for Perez’s predecessors at the head of the Sports de­ partment, Luis Morant and Charly Casiano, as tokens of the club’s thanks for their support from the outset.

This was key to introduc­ ing Nordic Walking to Spain 15 years ago, said Marc Dobbelaere and Francisco Lopez, respectively president and treasurer of the Valen­ cian Community’s National Nordic Walking Association.

They pointed out that doctors and the scientific community all recognised the ‘positive and beneficial’ effects of Nordic Walking, which was recommended for people of all ages.

Starting young THE Teulada­Moraira Children’s Council met for the first session of the 2020­2021 school year.

Existing memberships were renewed while 10 pupils com­ pleting their last primary year at the Sant Vicent Ferrer and Cap d’Or schools were welcomed to the council.

This is an official body which meets each month during the academic year to discuss munici­ pal issues affecting local chil­ dren. The council is also the ba­ sis of Teulada­Moraira’s status as a UNICEF Child­friendly mu­ nicipality.

Sports centre reopens DENIA’S indoor sports installa­ tion, partly destroyed by the September 2019 storms, has re­ opened.

The €200,000 that it cost to carry out the repairs was more than the original estimate as the roof, the outer west­facing wall, interior flooring and the outside basketball court all had to be renewed.

Initially the centre was ex­ pected to be ready by early 2020, but problems with the in­ surance company and the Covid­19 pandemic combined to delay work.

Hidden treasure THE Generalitat’s Culture department has finally confirmed Campello’s Torre del Barranquet de Marco, the remains of a 16th century watchtower, as a protected Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). Adjoining a private house, the tower’s base is partly buried and archaeologists are keen to discover what could lie below ground.

Spray clean BENIDORM’S street-cleaning service now has a small nebuliser vehicle which is compact enough to enter the narrow streets in the Old Town for disinfection purposes. This joins another larger vehicle that resembles those used by the army’s UME Emergencies Unit.

Road works WORK is due to begin on providing new domestic water pipes and extending main drainage to Calle Finlandia in Villajoyosa. The €127,366 cost, which has been met by the Diputacion provincial council, should take two months to complete and will include new streetlights, pavements and improved signposting.

Fewer stairs LINKS between Benidorm’s Alfredo Corral district and Avenida Jaime I are to be made less taxing with lifts and escalator ramps replacing the decades’ old steep flights of steps. The town hall will pay half of the €3 million cost, with the remainder coming from Brussels.

BENIDORM market’s popular clothing and footwear stalls could return.

When the town’s weekly mercadillo reopened last July, the town hall announced that owing to social distancing re­ quirements, stalls would be limited to fruit, vegetables and food.

Benidorm is now one of the province’s few municipalities not authorising the return of open­air market stalls selling non­essential items.

This triggered immediate complaints not only from the traders but also residents and visitors who recently signed a petition asking for their re­ turn at the entrance to the market.

The town hall’s Commerce councillor Lorenzo Martinez has told a delegation of stall­ holders that his department was looking for a solution and

Locked in A YOUNG woman and her boyfriend have been arrested for locking her grandmother in a room at the home they shared in Valencia for two years.

The 72­year­old was reportedly not allowed to use the bathroom, and police are looking into whether she was forced to steal by her grand­ daughter, 22, and her 18­year­old boyfriend.

The couple allegedly put a pad­ lock on the elderly woman’s bed­ room door in 2018, and sealed the window to prevent her from leaving the home she owns.

The elderly woman managed to escape when her granddaughter ap­ parently forgot to lock the door. The victim went to a nearby pharmacy and told a member of staff what had happened.

Investigators from the Family and Women’s Attention Unit (UFAM) said the pensioner was allowed into the living room on ocasions but couldn’t access the rest of the house, “not even the bathroom, so had to wear a diaper to relieve herself.”

It’s also claimed the granddaugh­ ter and her partner ‘slapped and ha­ rassed’ the elderly woman.

Police are investigating allegations the grandmother was forced to steal from commercial establishments by the detainees.

In addition, they are looking into whether the pair withdrew money from the victim’s account.

Early Christmas present JAVEA U3A gave the area’s disadvantaged youngsters an early Christmas present of €500.

The money comes from funds that mem­ bers have raised for the association’s nominat­ ed charity of the year, Make A Smile.

The U3A’s executive committee, led by its president Mike Cox, decided to make the donation now to help the charity which has been struggling finan­ cially during the coron­ avirus pandemic.

This came in lieu of the U3A’s usual presen­ tation to its nominated charity at the February general meeting.

Although U3A group activities were sus­ pended during the Covid­19 crisis, and the usual fundraising events have not been held, many members have been donating to the charity fund.

“Make A Smile or­ ganisers are delighted and expressed their ap­ preciation in a message to the committee and members,” Javea U3A said.

The charity thanked the association for their generosity, adding that the money would be put towards vouchers for the chil­ dren over the Christ­ mas period.

“Over the last couple of months, we have been focusing on the educational needs of the children due to having to study from home and missing out on extra­curricular ac­ tivities,” Make A Smile said.

“Now, with Christ­ mas coming up, this is our next concern.”

Missing boy, 13 THE National Po­ lice have launched an urgent public appeal to help find a missing boy, 13.

Alejandro Fruc­ toso Fernandez was last seen in his home town of Elche on Monday morning, Novem­ ber 9, and was registered as miss­ ing within hours.

THE Spanish government has been asked to extend benefits for essential services to vul­ nerable people affected by the pandemic.

Human rights activists petitioned Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Saturday, No­ vember 7 to extend the moratorium on cuts to essential services for low­income or vulnerable families indefinitely.

Groups such as the Alliance against Ener­ gy Poverty and the Platform of People Af­ fected by Mortgages reached out to the government in an attempt to suspend the interruption of basic services such as water, electricity and gas due to overdue bills, as it did during the first wave of the Covid­19 pandemic.

More than 3,000 organisations and social movements demanded in a manifesto that the government ensures that vulnerable families who are still suffering through the financial implications of the pandemic, and cannot afford to pay their bills, are not shut off from basic services.

A WOMAN, 25, was arrested

by Local Police in Malaga on the Costa del Sol for driving more than one kilometre on the metro tracks while three times over the legal alcohol limit.

The officers found a car on the tracks with three blown out tyres after it got stuck at the entrance to a tunnel on Saturday, November 7.

Malaga Metro security guards had requested the presence of the police who had to call a tow truck to re­ move the vehicle from the tracks.

The activists warned that it is the most vulnerable in society who are suffering ­ ‘migrants, women, young people and pensioners’ ­ and that they are ‘at the mercy of companies that might start a wave of cuts of supplies.’

A Rare Sighting A HUGE red sunfish weigh­ ing 35 kilos and 1.45 metres in length was discovered washed up at the Regional Park of Calblanque in Mur­ cia at the weekend.

The species, called ‘lam­ pris guttatus’ or more com­ monly Opah, is the first warm­blooded species capa­ ble of keeping all its organs at a stable temperature and is normally found in tropical waters.

The cause of the crea­

ture’s death is still un­ known.

The tyre­sized Opah, also known as the moonfish or sunfish, is a deep water predatory fish with relatively small red fins adorning its large, round body, which can grow up to 1.8 metres long.

These fins, which flap rapidly as the fish swims, turn out to be important in generating body heat for the Opah, often found swim­ ming with tuna schools.

Oxygen in cars STAFF at an overwhelmed hospital in Naples were giving suspected Covid-19 patients oxygen in their cars as they queued with ambulances for admission.

Cotugno Hospital in Campania appeared unable to cope with the increasing arrival of coronavirus patients as they walked along the lines of cars handing out oxygen tanks to people with breathing problems.

Campania has the third highest number of Covid-19 cases in Italy, while Lombardy has the highest.

On Tuesday, November 9, Italian government authorities raised Naples to red alert level, with Campania a ‘special observed region.’

Rescue Ship

SPAIN is set to spend €3.9 billion on a new submarine rescue ship. The rescue ship will not only be able to perform rescue mis­ sions, but will be able to protect the valuable underwater her­ itage of Spain in the form of sunken ships and treasure.

The rescue ship will fill a hole in the capabilities of the Navy, as they currently have limited rescue facilities for submarines.

According to El País, the ship will ‘aside from its military uses, be able to protect Spain’s underwater cultural heritage.’

Building the rescue ship will commence in 2021 and create over 1,000 new jobs in Cádiz.

Under pressure SPAIN’S Health Law Association has warned the rise in Covid-19 cases and an increase in ‘worrying pressure’ on health personnel have seen a rise in attacks on staff.

In the latest reported incident, a nurse at Petrer 1 health centre had a front tooth knocked out after being hit by a male waiting for medical assistance.

He claimed he had been waiting for two hours, reports EL Mundo, before he began to shout and threaten staff.

A nurse tried to calm him, and was struck in the face. The nurse fell to the floor and was bleeding from the nose and mouth.

Time capsule A NORTH POLE time capsule tossed from a Russian nuclear icebreaker in 2018 has washed up on the Irish coast.

Conor McClory of Gweedore in West Donegal was checking out the surf at the Bloody Foreland when he came across a steel structure in the sand.

Cost to be cut THE Spanish govern­ ment is considering low­ ering the cost of masks.

The government now considers that the fixed price of 96 cents per unit remains too much for many families.

Consumer Minister Alberto Garzón ex­ plained that they have been very concerned about the price of masks since the begin­ ning of the coronavirus pandemic. It recalls that the government estab­ lished a ‘maximum price control,’ which is an ‘anomaly in a market system’ to ensure that there were no cases such as masks at €10 per unit.

Garzón said setting the price of masks to 0.96 “is reasonable, but for many families, it is still out of reach.”

Following divorce, a new partner may change rights to live in spousal property with a new partner of the spouse who had been awarded the property in any settlement.

Attribution of the use of the habitual residence in a divorce proceeding It is normal, that in a di­ vorce proceeding, the use of the family home is passed to whichever par­ ent has custody of any mi­ nor children.

Thus, if both parents were owners of the prop­ erty and both also respon­ sible for any mortgage loan, if one of them is awarded custody of any children it is customary for he or she to also be awarded the use of the house.

Both of them would however continue to own property and pay off any mortgage loan as previously, but the use of the property would be for the custodial par­ ent.

Living with a new part­ ner. Consequences regard­ ing the use of the family home But what happens if the person who has been granted custody and use, starts living with a new partner?

There are different opin­ ions on the consequences of the occupation of the property by a third party.

On the one hand, some believe that it is irrelevant, since the use of the prop­ erty is actually granted to the children.

Therefore, if their moth­ er or father lives with an­ other partner, it should not affect the child’s rights.

On the other hand, oth­ ers believe that the cre­ ation of a new couple means that the property

should no longer have the status of a family home and therefore, the right of use in favour of the custo­ dial parent could be claimed to be ended.

The Supreme Court Judgment of 11/20/2018 The Supreme Court has confirmed that the second of the doctrines is the cor­ rect one.

Thus, it has basically said that in these cases, the property on which the use is established is where the family has lived to­ gether, with a desire to re­ main.

This situation therefore disappears with the entry of a third party, ceasing to serve, the property, for the purposes of marriage as, now, the property serves a different family.

Conclusion:

A court can order the loss of the use of the house after the divorce, if the parent who has such use lives with a new part­ ner.

But, even if this is the case, and a shared use could be requested, or a sale of the property, the parents must ensure that the children have a decent home in which to live.

This may also change the alimony payments to be made for the care of the children if a new home needs to be found.

Uria Heep star dies Alicante-based Uriah Heep star Ken Hensley has died.

Uriah Heep keyboardist Ken Hensley, 75, passed away at his home in Agos, Alicante on Wednesday, November 4 after a short illness. Details of his passing have not been released, but his death was said to have been sudden. The music star, who moved to Spain in the 2000s, was best known for hits released by the band in the 60s to 80s, such as Easy Livin’, The Wizard, Sweet Lorraine and Lady in Black.

Hensley’s brother Trevor confirmed the news on Facebook, writing: “I am writing this with a heavy heart to let you know that my brother Ken Hensley passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening. His wife Monica was at his side and comforted Ken in his last few minutes with us.” In a career that spanned decades, Hensley appeared on 13 albums with Uriah Heep and was working on a solo album in Spain when he died.

Valencia Solidarity THE 70 students who train at the VCF Football School in Samos, Greece, are learning the values of solidarity and the importance of helping and collaborating in times of difficulty, as the Valencia school helps earthquake victims.

A week ago an earthquake of 6.7 degrees on the Richter scale with its epicentre in the Aegean Sea hit both Turkey and Greece.

One of the places that suffered the most was the island of Samos where two young people lost

their lives and several hundred people lost their homes.

The Valencia Academy has made its facilities available to the authorities. On the artificial grass, tents have been set up to accommodate families who cannot return home. The situation in Greece is also more problematic because of the limitations caused

by Covid-19. For now, the academy has postponed training however, Valencia expects sports activity to return in the middle of December.

Female first EMILY HARRINGTON has made history and become the first woman to free-climb El Capitan in a day.

She joins just three other climbers who have managed to scale the 3,000ft granite wall in Yosemite national park in California in less than 24 hours.

The 34-year-old reached the top in an incredible 21 hours, 13 minutes and 51 seconds on Wednesday, November 4.

Talking to the San Francisco Chronicle about her achievement in a male-dominated sport, Harrington said she spent years feeling like she didn’t belong and hadn’t earned her place to be a Yosemite climber.

“But throughout this experience, I learned that there is no belonging or not belonging, no formula to achievement up there. I was creative and experimental and I found my own way,” she added.

No patient zero exists THE Coronavirus in Spain did not have the traditional ‘Patient Zero.’ It has been confirmed that originally in Spain there were over 500 entry points for Coronavirus.

Several events held in February 2020 have shown to be how the Coronavirus took such a devastating hold over the country, which lead to the national lockdown in March.

According to El País, researchers led by Iñaki Comas, from the Valencia Institute of Biomedicine, found that ‘Patient zero doesn’t exist.’ Some of the main events identified as the source of infection were the February football match between Valencia and Atlanta, that saw over 2,500 people visit Milan, and the international contemporary art fair that was held in Madrid.

SPAIN has begun the trial of sus­ pects linked to the deadly 2017 van attack which killed 14 people in Barcelona.

Spain’s High Court on Tuesday, November 10, opened the trial of three suspected Islamist militants linked to the attack in which a sin­ gle attacker drove a rented van in­ to crowds of people on Barcelona’s central La Rambla boulevard.

Terrorist Trial The attack, Spain’s deadliest in over a decade, caused 14 deaths and injured over a hundred peo­ ple, with another man killed dur­ ing the attacker’s getaway.

Two of the accused, a Spaniard and a Moroccan, face charges of

belonging to a terrorist organisa­ tion, manufacturing and storing explosives, and attempting to cause widespread destruction which are related to an accidental explosion on the eve of the attack that destroyed a house in Alcanar,

southwest of Barcelona, where ex­ plosives and gas canisters had been stored.

Prosecutors are seeking jail terms of 41 and 36 years for the two and eight years for another Moroccan national who is accused of being an accomplice. They have been in prison pending trial since their arrests in 2017 in connection with the blast and potential con­ nection to the Barcelona attack.

Lost time IN a legal first, a court in Spain has compensated a dad for not having custody of his daughters during lockdown.

The Court of First In­ stance and Instruction number 1 of Igualada, recognised the right of a father to ‘recover’ the days of weekly custody of his two daughters he missed during confine­ ment. The court heard he ‘could not enjoy this time with his children’ after his former partner ­ with whom he has joint cus­ tody ­ decided to leave the family home during the mandatory confinement period, from March to June, and a week in Sep­ tember due to a possible contagion.

The court ruled it is nec­ essary to ‘rebalance’ the ‘32 days the father lost with his daughters.’

Forty­two­year­old Darren Watt had been employed as store manager at the Co­opera­ tive on Sclattie Park in Bucksburn, however, it was discovered he had stolen thousands of pounds over a period of two months.

Swingers’ party at train station NATIONAL POLICE shut down a swingers’ party being held in commercial premises at the Delicias AVE train station in Zaragoza.

The location was equipped with a bar, tables, sofas and rooms separated by curtains and had been set up by an association for liberal sexual relations.

Officers went to the station following a call from the security guards when music was heard in the middle of the night. They found several people inside who were charged with non-compliance with anti-coronavirus measures, as the party exceeded the permitted number of people on private premises, and was being held after the 11pm curfew.

A COLOMBIAN drugs cartel trafficker has been arrested by police after a raid on a luxury villa in Marbella.

In a joint operation with Dutch police, the National Police have arrested a drug trafficker said to be from the Cali cartel (Colombia). The man, initials MAH, of Dutch nationality and Colombian origin, had taken refuge on the Costa del Sol after fleeing from police in the Netherlands. He

He is credited with laundering more than €6 million through cryptocurrencies.

Virtual L’Oréal VIRTUAL MAKE-UP: Lipsticks or eye shadows can be tried online.

L’ORÉAL has done a deal with Google for virtual make-up as they look for innovative ways to continue business through tough Covid lockdowns and restrictions.

The deal will encourage shoppers searching for cosmetics on Google to try them on virtually via technology designed by ModiFace, a Canadian augmented reality specialist acquired by L’Oreal in 2018.

The French group has been looking to make up for lost store sales caused by coronavirus lockdowns by expanding online and has sped up some of its web initiatives as a result of the pandemic.

“There’s been an acceleration in all our partnerships due to Covid19,” Digital chief, Lubomira Rochet said in an online presentation on Thursday, November 5.

The Google partnership will also extend to the US group’s YouTube video sharing platform, Rochet said.

People seeking lipsticks or eye shadows by L’Oreal brands, which include Lancome and Urban Decay, who come across their adverts on Google or YouTube can then try them online.

According to Rochet, L’Oreal, which already had a ModiFace partnership with social media site Facebook, has seen the usage of virtual make-up tools rise fivefold during Covid-19 lockdowns this year, and the conversion rate from an advert to purchase was three times higher with the try-on.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, November 10, with state broadcaster TVE, Illa said: “The country would initially get 20 million vaccine doses, enough to immunise 10 million people.”

This follows news on Monday, November 9, that a vaccine developed by the US pharmaceutical companies was more than 90 per cent effective and Illa went on to add that the

“We hope that this week or next week some more contracts can be signed with the Pfizer company and with other companies and the first doses could arrive at the beginning of 2021.”

Covid recovering PIERS MORGAN has said his parents are getting better, slowly but surely after catching coronavirus and his stepfather finally has his taste back.

The 55­year­old controversial TV presenter disclosed his relief and hu­ mour on Good Morning Britain by saying his stepdad could finally taste the salt in his food and his wine, of course. Piers Morgan’s parents are both in their late 70s and caught the virus from someone in their ‘sup­ port bubble’ no matter how careful they were as well.

The whole ordeal was extremely scary as they are older and still is as they are recovering, but slowly. Piers’ biological father died in a road acci­ dent. His name was Eamonn Vincent O’Meara and he devastatingly passed when Piers was 11 months old. When his mother and stepfather married, Piers took the surname of his stepfather.

Furlough extension THE UK’s furlough scheme has been ex­ tended until the end of March, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced.

“To give people across the UK certainty over the winter, I can an­ nounce that the fur­ lough scheme will not be extended for one month ­ it will be extended until the end of March,” he said.

Employees will re­ ceive 80 per cent of their usual salary for hours not worked, up to £2,500 a month.

The Chancellor also announced increased “support for millions more workers through the Self­Employment In­ come Support Scheme.”

The third grant covering November to January will now be calculated at 80 per cent of average trading profits, up to a maximum of £7,500.

HSBC announce Cuts Boy racer HSBC is set to cut around 100 jobs in UK retail banks as the group looks to continue its restructuring.

The move comes after the bank announced that it could start charg­ ing for ‘basic banking services’ and was confirmed by a spokesman for HSBC, who said: “In line with the Group strategy announced in February, we continue to restructure and review the roles required to transform the bank.” Similar restructuring of its commercial banking business was announced last month which will eventually result in around 300 more job cuts. Europe’s biggest bank resumed cutting around 35,000 jobs in June, which was the plan prior to the pandemic in March, however, after a delay, it’s now back on the cards with this latest announcement.

Chief Executive Noel Quinn has said the job losses are necessary to re­ duce costs and in turn improve profits, as HSBC grapples with the eco­ nomic hit from the pandemic on its loan books, as well as resulting low interest rates worldwide.

HSBC’s cuts to its UK retail banking business follows a similar move by rival Lloyds Banking Group on Wednesday, November 4.

Greece Lockdown GREECE is now in nationwide lockdown for three weeks to curb a recent Covid surge.

The latest restrictions took effect from Saturday, Novem­ ber 7, and represent the sec­ ond time this year that the country has ordered a nation­ wide lockdown after experi­ encing another sharp spike in Covid­19 infections last week.

In his address, Prime Minis­ ter Kyriakos Mitsotakis said: “I’ve chosen to take drastic measures sooner rather than later.”

A GRIEVING woman has been fined for causing a head­on crash after hearing a sad song on the radio that reminded her of her sister.

May Wilson, who was grieving following the sudden death of her sister, heard the song as she was making her drive home when she drifted onto the wrong side of the road, colliding head­on with a Ford Transit van.

The crash, along the A947 at King Edward towards Banff, was so severe that firefighters had to free the 58­year­old driver of the van from the wreckage before being taken to Aberdeen Royal In­ firmary. Wilson had faced a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving over the incident, however yesterday, the plea of guilty to a lesser charge of careless driving was accepted by the Crown, and she was fined £800 and given six penalty points.

HARRY STYLES has been forced into 14­day lockdown during filming of his new movie Don’t Worry, Darling.

New Line, the studio behind the Olivia­Wilde directed film, has suspended production af­ ter a crew member tested posi­ tive, forcing Styles and others into quarantine.

SPAIN is preparing legislation that would see a 5 per cent tax on stream­ ing giants like Netflix with the funds used to boost Spanish cinematic pro­ duction, the government has claimed.

The law, which would tax online entertainment platforms on the basis of earnings generated in Spain, seeks to bring existing legislation “in line with the reality of the market where

Investment by Iberdrola

THE energy company Iber­ drola has announced what it calls the “largest investment programme in the history of a Spanish company,” saying that it intends to invest €75 billion from now until 2025 in support of a green eco­ nomic recovery.

The bulk of the new in­ vestment is expected to fo­ cus on renewables projects as well as upgrading net­ works hoping to almost dou­ ble its electricity production over the next five years.

It hasn’t said where the funds will be coming from al­ though the company expects to increase its net profit to €5 billion in 2025, from €3.4 billion last year as a result of this growth.

Ninety per cent of this new investment ­ €68 billion ­ will be organic and will be aimed at consolidating its business model, based on more renewable energy, more networks, more stor­ age and more intelligent so­ lutions for its customers.

Czech GDP overtakes Spain THE latest International Mone­ tary Fund (IMF) survey shows that the Czech Republic is now ahead of Spain for Gross Do­ mestic Product (GDP) per capi­ ta following the onset of the Covid­19 pandemic.

According to the IMF, gross domestic product per capita in the Czech Republic for 2020 equates to 38,120 internation­ al dollars (the IMF converts salaries into international dol­ lars as at 2017 to compare GDP per capita between countries).

The calculation for Spain shows its GDP per capita is at 36,086 international dollars and Czech government spokesman Lukáš Kovanda, believes that Spain is unlikely to recover its previous advan­ tage.

H O V I S w h i c h i s s y n o n y­ mous with brown bread and has been a name in British households for 134 years has now been sold by joint owners Gores Group and Premier Foods (who own the Mr Kipling brand).

It had originally been wooed by an Italian food company Newlat but when private equity firm Endless started a bidding war, the I t a l i a n s p u l l e d o u t a l­ though their offer was ex­ pected to be in the region of £100 million (€110 mil­ lion) so Endless were the winners for an undisclosed sum.

Hovis is a favoured con­ sumer bread brand and is supported by its key cus­ tomers and suppliers. It has seen strong growth in its branded market share

and the business is well placed to capture a further share of the UK’s £4 billion (€4.4 billion) overall bak­ ery category.

With headquarters in High Wycombe, the busi­ ness employs around 2,700 people and operates eight bakery sites, its own flour mill and a distribution net­ work spanning the UK and Northern Ireland.

Explaining the reason for making this purchase, End­ less have said that under the current management team, Hovis has seen a sig­ nificant upturn in trading in the last four years and will continue to drive its strategy focused on deliv­ ering great quality prod­ ucts, customer value and service.

The horrific Viennese massacre is a case in point. Within a few days, the whole appalling incident seems to have been quietly relegated to the domain of under carpet sweepers and ‘see no evils.’ What also happened to Khairi Saadallah, suspected of killing the three gay men in a Reading park? Or the toe­ rag who killed the police officer in Croydon? Just how long do the authorities think they can ‘gaslight’ the public into believing these are all unrelated events committed by perpetrators with ‘mental problems’?

We simply cannot afford to continue ignoring the fact that we are under a concerted and continuing attack from a sole fanatical enemy. The laxness of the

authorities in the Viennese massacre is almost beyond belief. No doubt they are also hampered by the same ‘politically correct’ dangerous nonsense that affects us all ­ but they really should have been on to this one. This perp had served 22 months for trying to reach Syria and join IS jihadists. He worshipped in a mosque that intelligence services suspected of promoting extremism and a few hours before the attack, appeared on an Instagram post swearing allegiance to IS while holding an assault rifle, a handgun and a machete across his chest. He really couldn’t have been more obvious about his intentions had he announced it on national news!

The West need to completely forget about ‘offending’ anyone, shut the PC brigade down completely and take up a serious offensive against these murderous insurgents. The first thing that needs to be done is to stop any more of them coming in. A multi­ national security border force should be set up, physically preventing every able bodied male from the Middle East entering the West ­ full stop!

For eight years I lived among these people and I can state quite

categorically that most of them simply cannot be trusted. They interpret kindness as a sign of weakness and, despite what they say, a large number of them hate and envy the West and its ‘infidel’ inhabitants. Deportations must become a priority. As a deterrent, whole families of convicted or suspected terrorists need to be removed.

Camps must be set up to house and vet immigrants that do manage to breach security, and separate prisons built for Islamist extremists. ‘No go’ areas operating under ‘sharia law’ must be freed up and made safe for all indigenous citizens and, if necessary, enforced by military armed personnel.

The provocative burka must also be banned. If these tough measures lead to confrontation, so be it. At least we will know who our enemies are!

It is of course a tragedy that innocent and genuine refugees have to suffer for the sins of others, but, if we are to survive this war, I am more than convinced that we simply have no other choice.

I’m back at the start but am different!

MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED I’M sat in the coffee shop with my Mum and Dad waiting to go in - I’m back at the Mental Health Hospital - damn Covid has meant they can’t come in with me and I have to go in alone.

I feel excited as I have waited so long for an appointment, nervous because I know what is coming next, the leg is going up and down like mad and by this point and I can feel my eyes filling up. Breathe - I get up from the table and walk towards the building.

Heart is racing, hands are trembling, the entrance has changed - it’s not where it has always been, it’s around the back.

Why change it? I can’t get in - I’m going to be late, I can’t be late.

I am once again sat on those cold green metal chairs, the tiles on the wall are cold.

I wish I wasn’t sat there alone, I haven’t had to be here for a long time. I see a friendly face, the nurse that looked after me when I was so poorly in hospital - Breathe.

Your dog may dream about you A HARVARD professor has made dog owners’ days by say­ ing she believes pooches dream about their humans when they sleep.

Dr Deidre Barrett, clinical and evolutionary psychologist at Harvard Medical School, explained dogs and other mam­ mals are known to have similar sleep patterns to humans.

During the REM phase humans usually dream about what was on their mind during the day and for dogs this is probably their owners.

Barrett told People magazine: “Humans dream about things they’re interested in during the day, though less logically and more visually. There’s no reason to think animals are different. As dogs are attached to their own­ ers, they’re likely to dream about your face or your smell.”
