ALTHOUGH residents of San Pedro Alcantara still have to queue outside the dilapidat ed health centre whilst the new one remains incom plete, there is brighter news for those on the other side of Marbella as €75 million is to be invested in the Costa del Sol hospital. Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz to gether with representative of the Junta de Andalucia Elías Bendodo visited the works that are being under taken in the Emergency and External Consultation areas of the hospital on Saturday October 31 and confirmed the news. The resurrection of the ex pansion for the hospital came about after the Junta settled a dispute with the original builders of the long deserted extension building and it will also be able to of fer better parking for visi tors. The mayor also congratu lated all of the staff at the hospital for the hard and dif ficult work that they had un

dertaken since the outbreak of the pandemic. Things are looking up for health on the Costa del Sol,

with the Estepona Hospital due to open within a few months and the La Linea hos pital up and running already.

Clearly 2020 has seen a huge demand on the re sources of the health service along the coast and to some extent, the Costa del Sol hos pital has had to carry the brunt because it has such a large catchment area realisti cally running from Manilva to Fuengirola and inland. So much has been made of the delays of the upgrading of the San Pedro Health Cen tre, but it now appears that the relationship between the Marbella Council and Junta de Andalucia is bearing very positive results. If it is finally completed early next year, it will take some of the pressure off the main Marbella hospital as will the brand new facility in Estepona. All of this comes too late for the spike in the coron avirus pandemic although Costa del Sol Hospital ap pears to have coped well within its current capabilities.
