HOPE FOR HELP

REPRESENTATIVES from seven Benidorm hospitality and in­ dustry­linked industries visited Madrid last week.

They were received by Igna­ cio Diaz, a high­ranking official and spokesman at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, together with Miguel Sanz, director of Turespaña, which promotes tourism out­ side Spain.

The representatives per­ suaded the Spain’s govern­ ment to review the possibility of applying the ERTE furlough scheme introduced during the State of Alarm to their sectors.

“Since the start of the Covid­ 19 pandemic, takings have fall­ en between 50 and 60 per cent and now we are approaching the worst time of year,” said Raul Parra, president of shop­ keepers’ association, AICO. “We need the government to act now and come up with solutions to prevent dozens of businesses from closing.”

Love Letters postponed JAVEA PLAYERS announced that the theatre group are postponing their production of Love Letters on November 10­14 and November 17­21.

Although theatre performances are not affected by the new rules an­ nounced on October 24, the Players wish to participate in the commu­ nity effort to minimise Covid infection risks and are therefore postpon­ ing the show. Tickets purchased will be refunded in full.

“We are sad to have to take this decision and regret any inconve­ nience,” they said. “We look forward to the time when we can an­ nounce a rescheduled Love Letters.”

Denia Rock Choir together again SATURDAY October 17 was World Singing Day and the chosen song was What a Wonderful World.

This was also a wonderful reason for the Denia Rock Choir (DCR) to get together for the first time since the March lockdown in Basetes park.

Meeting at 10am, they sang under direction of Claire Lowe, Kate Spelling told the Euro Weekly News.

“It was amazing to think that all round the world, people were singing the same song at the same time,” Kate said. “What joy it brought DRC members to get together and sing! We are hoping that it can become regular, rules and weather permitting,” she added.

U3A eight months on CALPE U3A held their general meeting on Octo­ ber 15 in the Salon Blau at the Casa de Cultura.

There was a talk by Pedro from Calpe Red Cross who brought three members of the team ­ Cristina, Alba and Laura ­ with him.

The Red Cross are very positive about their work and are keen to liaise closely with Calpe U3A, they said.

The organisation is also requesting un­ wrapped Christmas toys for the children of fami­ lies that have been affected by the Covid­19 pan­ demic.

Liam McKervey gave an insight into his expe­ riences in the nursing profession and as a nurs­

ing home manager.

On one occasion he received a 3am phone call explaining that the chef had won a cow in a card game and it was in the kitchen.

When Liam arrived he found a horse, not a cow, and after arranging for the horse to be tak­ en to a nearby farm, the kitchen had an immedi­ ate deep clean.

Liam has put his name forward to take over as Calpe U3A president at the November annual general meeting, which will be held on Thursday, November 19 at the Casa de Cultura’s Salon Blau.

Doors open at 10am and will commence at 11am.

10th Painters’ Meeting THIRTY artists met in Albir last Saturday, October 24, to take part in the 10th Painters’ Meet­ ing.

This was organised by ArtA­ vant, with collaboration from the Alfaz Town Hall’s Culture de­ partment.

The aim was to allow partici­ pants of all ages to spend the day painting at the Albir Biblio­ playa.

This year’s theme, Rela­ cionarte, centred on the concept of openings and the connecting

spaces between two zones, the organisers explained, and the paintings will be exhibited at the Casa de Cultura in November.

Alfaz’s Culture councillor Manuel Casado ­ accompanied by councillors Rocio Guijarro, Martine Mertens, Luis Miguel Morant ­ visited the painters at work on Albir beach where they met ArtAvant’s president, Isabel Pedrola.

The meeting was not a com­ petition, Pedrola explained, but an opportunity for the young

and adults to enjoy painting out­ doors in a friendly atmosphere.

ArtAvant, which was founded in 2007, is dedicated to encour­ aging creativity and mutual learning, while connecting artists from all branches of the arts at different levels of experi­ ence.

Together with organising talks, workshops and exhibi­ tions, the association also holds art classes for adults and chil­ dren at Alfaz’s Casa de Cultura from October to June.

Tax break JAVEA Town Hall Finance department is waiving its 2021 tax on bars and restaurants whose terrace tables occupy public pavements and spaces, although this means a €200,000 reduction in the local government’s income. Terraces may also continue to occupy more than their allocated space to ensure adequate social distancing.

Local limes OLIVA’S citrus fruit growers are promoting limes, which they are now publicising throughout Spain. Although not traditionally associated with Oliva, they explained that the limes are fresher and in better condition than imported fruit and are more environmentally-friendly as they do not involve long journeys or generate excessive carbon footprints.

Tree surgery LA VILA’S Environment department and the Diputacion provincial council are clearing, pruning and maintaining the pinewoods adjoining Calle Tramuntana in La Cala de Villajoyosa. Deadfalls and weaker trees are being removed, reducing the everpresent fire hazard and favouring hardy native species that are able to retain rainwater and help to prevent erosion.

Heavy metal A SPANISH couple were charged with stealing copper drainpipes worth €5,000 from the facades of Marina Alta villas, targeting properties with elderly owners in isolated areas and selling on the copper to Benissa and El Vergel scrap dealers.

The woman was charged and released, although her partner has now been remanded.

Lions go fund racing State of Alarm TEULADA­MORAIRA LIONS re­ ceived a €250 donation from the recent Ladies’ St Leger Race Day event at Maxim’s.

Organiser Coral Guise­Smith offered the Lions 50 per cent of the profits, which she stipulated should go to the local Food Banks.

Teulada­Moraira Lions were extremely grateful to Coral and Libby for their generosity and assured them that the funds will be directed as requested, as they regularly donate to the Food Banks, particularly when their usual funding routes are interrupted for some reason.

There are strong indications that poverty will be a key prob­ lem in the local community this winter following the pandemic’s impact on businesses, and Teu­ lada­Moraira Lions are keen to look at all options to boost their funds.

THE Spanish government implemented a nationwide State of Alarm on Sunday, October 25. The State of Alarm means that the pub­ lic must abide by: A mandatory nationwide curfew for the entire coun­ try is now in effect from 11pm until 6am daily.

The autonomous regions of Spain are able to amend the time of the curfew by one hour at their discretion, but the rules will remain in place for a 15­day period, after which it will be re­ viewed from November 9.

The initial period will last for 15 days with parliament having to ratify any exten­ sions or amendments mov­ ing forward.

The extraordinary meet­ ing of the government

council of ministers was held on Sunday, October 25 at midday and approved the required decree to im­ plement the new State of Alarm.

Until the government is content that the rate of in­ fection has dropped to ac­ ceptable levels, they have stated that they will contin­ ue to seek extensions to this process until the spread is confined.

At this stage, the govern­ ment has made no indica­ tion that it intends to im­ plement a further national lockdown, however, in his speech on Friday October 23, Sanchez would not go as far as to rule it out en­ tirely.

U3A VALL DEL POP’S second general assembly of the 2020­2021 season saw members gather­ ing at El Cid in Benidoleig.

The next two general assemblies will also be held at El Cid while municipal halls are unavail­ able, although to accommodate their other events these will move to Wednesdays.

The meeting concluded with Tales to Tell from Clive Browning, an Environmental Health Officer from the 1970s through to 2008.

Clive reminisced on his work, pointing out that many complainants now refer their case di­ rectly to a solicitor rather than the Environmen­ tal Health Officer.

He recalled visiting a sweet old lady who

complained after finding that nothing came out when she tried to pour out milk. Clive immedi­ ately spotted a mouse stuck in the mouth of the bottle and only then realised that she was blind.

Then there was the Fish and Chip shop in a poor area of the city where everything seemed superficially acceptable, until Clive saw a man with a bucket of peeled potatoes emerging from the family bathroom.

Further investigation showed the potato peeling was ongoing whilst a gentleman was sit­ ting on the toilet and reading the paper to the peeler.

Benidorm’s good figures MORE than 46,000 people visited Benidorm’s beach­ es during the October 9­12 long weekend.

“These figures demon­ strate the holiday’s impact on the town, with hotel occupancy reaching 70 per cent according to the Hos­ bec hoteliers’ associa­ tion,” Benidorm mayor Toni Perez announced.

Tourist apartments, campsites and second res­ idences also saw an influx of visitors, the mayor added.

“Although these figures are far from pre­pandemic levels, they confirm that Benidorm is a leading tourist destination, even in adverse conditions,” he said.

Albir charity calendar

THE We Love Albir associa­ tion’s 2021 calendar is now on sale for €7.50.

It was produced with collaboration from Alfaz Town Hall and Zeblack printers with all proceeds from sales of the calen­ dar going to the local Vol­ untariado Social to help those affected by the Covid­19 crisis.

The images of Albir and Alfaz used for the calendar were ceded by We love Albir members and the town hall.

Zeblack made no charge for the printing costs.

ON Monday, October 19, the Euro Weekly News was con­ tacted by Paula Martin.

She was making a general call for the people who know and love Benidorm to rally round and help the town.

“Friends of Benidorm, we need your support now,” Paula declared.

“Many of you have had wonderful times in Benidorm and now Benidorm needs you to help us recover.”

“As a town we are in dire straits. Our industry is tourism but without tourists our young people have no work, no hope, no aspirations, no money.

“Benidorm, the jewel in the Costa Blanca’s crown, has lost its sparkle. Please support the town you visited dur­ ing the good times,” she said.

Thirteen thousand of Benidorm’s 68,000 inhabitants are pensioners, but they alone cannot support the town, Paula pointed out.

Other nearby towns where half the population are pensioners are not doing too badly, but in Benidorm 33,500 people ­ the workforce ­ were aged between 18 and 65.

“How many are without jobs? Too many!” lamented Paula, calling on Benidorm’s friends to help them get back to work.

“Come to Benidorm once a week to one of the restau­ rants or bars that are open,” she urged.

“You can get a roast dinner from €4.50 while tapas and a drink will set you back between €1.50 and €2. A Menu of the Day starts at €7 and upwards, with something to suit every pocket.

“Friends and neighbours of Benidorm, we desperately need your support,” Paula declared.

“Our young people want to work… please help them!”

THE Garda are back on the Irish border and carrying out checks on drivers after the highest­level lockdowns were imposed on both sides of the frontier.

Irish police have not carried out such stringent checks on dri­ vers from Ulster since the days of the Troubles when the IRA moved guns and explosives into the war­torn province.

Now they are on the lookout for people making non­essen­ tial journeys, after the Republic this week imposed swingeing Level 5 restrictions which ban people from travelling more than three miles (5km) from their home.

On Wednesday, October 21, when Ireland’s new six­week national lockdown began, the Gardai were given new powers

by Dublin to prosecute people making non­essential travel, with fines of up to €2,500 and jail for up to six months.

CELEBRATIONS in Chile have tak­ en place over a vote to rip up the dictatorship­era constitution.

There have been jubilant scenes throughout Chile after 78 per cent voted ‘yes’ to rewriting the country’s dictatorship­era constitution on Sunday, October 25. President Sebastián Piñera praised the peaceful vote, after violent scenes were witnessed at demonstrations during the week in Santiago.

M40 huge pileup Aragon circuit-breaker confirmed AT least 20 people have been injured in a huge 12­car motor­ way pile up on the M40 in the UK. The horrific pileup occurred on the M40 motorway on Sun­ day, October 25 just before 6pm on the southbound car­

riageway close to J4 for High Wycombe. Ambulance services confirmed that 11 people were taken to hospital with “serious or minor injuries.”

An air ambulance and the fire service attended the incident.

FINLAND’S main nation­ al airline, Finnair, has been selling its busi­ ness class meals in a su­ permarket near Helsin­ ki airport, and following its success, they’re set to be sold in more.

The experiment proved a big hit among customers as over 1,600 meals were sold within days of the launch.

For the takeaway meals, priced at €12.90, customers get the chance to live the life of a business class flier with a choice between: beef with teriyaki­ radish sauce served with grilled spring onion and rice, or smoked arc­ tic char with chantarelle risotto, on offer.

As it battles to limit job losses at its catering division in the wake of the Covid­19 pandemic, Finnair has also decided to sell the meals in more supermarkets.

NOT A FIRST: Nerja feria was cancelled 110 years ago.

THE Nerja Town Hall in Axarquia has published a document dated September 3, 1910, that reveals that the suspension of the feria this year as a result of the health crisis is not a first for the town.

It appears 110 years ago the town was also forced to cancel the feria, on that occasion due to a cholera epidemic.

In said act, which the municipal archive has made known due to its coincidence with the current reality, it is specified that “considering that it is highly inappropriate at the present time to hold celebrations that involve the agglomeration of the public and suppress celebrations that ordinarily are held every year in this town on October 9, 10 and 11.”

As pointed out by the town hall in a statement, this year’s budget allocated to the fair, which amounted to €325,000 has been re-allocated to help the Covid-19 crisis.

Empty Plates Protest IN yet another act of protest people left empty plates with messages about hungry children outside a local Tory headquarters on Monday, October 26, after their MP voted against pro­ viding free school meals for children over the school holidays.

Southend West MP Sir David Amess was

one of the 322 Tories who voted against the Labour Party motion to provide free school meals for children during the half­term break and Christmas holidays.

Alcohol Free GUINNESS has launched a new alco­ hol­free version of its famed stout af­ ter a four­year endeavour to replicate the same taste.

The Irish brewer says Guinness 0.0 is a response to a growing consumer ap­ petite for non­alcohol, lower­calorie beverages.

The product was developed by an innovation team based at Guinness’s brewery at St James’s Gate in Dublin.

Aisling Ryan, one of the team’s lead brewers, said ‘hundreds and hundreds’ of versions were tried until they finally landed on one they were happy with.

She said: “It’s been a long time in the making.”

Ms Ryan said finding a way to take out the alcohol in a ‘gentle way’ with­ out using heat was crucial in maintain­ ing the Guinness taste.

Mary Fowler, 104, is a resi­ dent of Balfarg Care Home in Glenrothes, Fife. Because of Covid­19 restrictions, she hasn’t had any physical contact with her family in months.

Balearic Fury THE president of the PP in the Balearic Islands, Biel Company, has de­ manded the ‘immediate’ resignation of the President of the Govern­ ment, Francina Armengol. She was allegedly seen in a bar well after curfew on Tuesday, October 6.

Regulations on the islands to curb the coronavirus pandemic require bars and restaurants to close before 1am.

The president and several senior ministers met on the night in ques­ tion for a working dinner. After dinner, the president and her colleagues ‘found an open establishment, specifically the Hat Bar, and entered.’

The president claims that they left the bar at around 1am, however ‘at the time of departure, the Director General of Communication suf­ fered a blackout,’ so they waited outside until he recovered.

What was once a desert in Almeria is now a sea of greenhouses ­ and the orchard of Europe.

This has inspired a group of pioneering companies to develop the Greendo­ mo Project in a bid to build similar greenhouses which can be used in a va­ riety of outdoor spaces in­ cluding parks and other green spaces, terraces or even the attics of urban buildings.

Child burns Maxwell’s Denial A CHILD suffered burns to her face as hand sanitiser accidentally caught fire while she was playing with it.

Izabella Reaume, 6, from Toledo, Ohio has been left with horrific scars on her face after the FDA warned of a sharp increase in sanitiser products testing positive for methanol contamination.

The brave little girl was playing with the hand sanitiser in her garden when her cousin ignited a lighter, causing the sanitiser to burst into flames.

Izabella’s mom Larrissa said doctors had to cut off her clothes. “I carried her in my arms. When I saw what had happened to her face I was devastated.”

Malaga Lights no show THIS year Christmas may be a little different, with a bleak outlook motivated by a rebound in Covid-19 cases in Malaga, with curfews and further restrictions being reinstated.

Students Jump STUDENTS risked their lives jumping from windows to avoid being caught at a lockdown party.

Footage posted on social media shows University of Salford students risk life and limb to avoid being nabbed by security breaking up an illegal lockdown party. The party took place at the Peel Park Quarter accommodation on Wednesday, October 21.

When security went to investigate a ‘gathering’ they found multiple students scrambling from first floor windows in a bid to escape detection. Photos and videos show friends on the ground helping some students down, while others jumped down unaided.

Salford was in Tier Two lockdown on the night, with people banned from mixing with other households indoors. The area has since moved onto stricter restrictions under Tier Three.

Onlookers claim the woman screamed “I’m falling” before she slipped and became ‘entrapped’ in the mechanism of the ride, which swings passengers 360 degrees.

A STUDY by the Raptor Protocol (Recording and Addressing Persecution and Threats to Our Raptors), published on Wednesday, October 21, spans 12 years and shows the vast majority of Ireland’s birds of prey have been killed by human attacks or other activity including poisoning.

Longest ICU THE longest ICU patient in Spain fighting coronavirus has died shortly after leaving hospital. Ángel Mateos, who became the patient holding the record for the longest time spent in an ICU unit due to coronavirus after 172 days in intensive care, has died.

The extraordinary man, hailed by hospital workers as ‘a great fighter,’ was admitted to the ICU of Igualada Hospital, Barcelona, where he had worked as an auxiliary nurse for 20 years, on March 16.

The molecular biolo­ gist and geneticist calcu­ lated life expectancy for more than 200,000 Americans who have died of Covid­19.

A WOMAN has been fined £230 for having ‘al fresco’ sex with a stranger.

Uber drivers sue ‘Hayride’ from hell

FORMER Uber drivers have launched a legal challenge claiming the firm used automated ‘robo-firing’ algorithms to dismiss them.

They want courts in the Netherlands, where Uber’s data is based, to overrule the algorithm they claim caused them to be fired, arguing the taxi app had not given them access to evidence of ‘fraudulent activity.’

Uber told the BBC that drivers’ accounts were only shut down following manual review by humans, and said the company provides requested personal data that individuals are entitled to.

ARMED & EXORCIST A POLICE officer dad armed his daughter with a rifle while performing an exorcism on his son.

Christopher Dougherty, 37, was arrested over the weekend at his home in Orange County, Florida. He was first taken to hospital and arrested shortly afterwards on Sunday.

When police arrived at the house, Dougherty’s young daughter told them her dad had armed her with a rifle, bullet­ proof vest and Kevlar helmet. He allegedly told her to lie on the floor in the bedroom and shoot anyone who arrived, as he tried to perform an exorcism on his son who was ‘full of demons.’

Dougherty was also fired from his job on the same day for ‘an unsatisfactory performance finding in a separate matter.’

AN almost total ban on abor­ tion could be introduced in Poland as a top constitution­ al court is set to make a rul­ ing.

Local Police in Murcia recovered the four go­karts close to the Nueva Condomina shopping centre from where they had been taken.

Witnesses reported seeing young people driving dangerously in the streets around the centre.

When the police arrived at the scene at almost 1am on Thurs­ day, October 22, the ‘racers’ had fled and two of the karts had been abandoned in the centre car park.

The other two go­karts were later found on an industrial estate close by after further reports of reckless driving from residents.

A team of researchers at the Imperial College London claim immunity appears to be waning after discovering that the number of people testing positive for antibodies has fallen by 26 per cent between June and September.

This means there is a risk of becoming infected with coronavirus several times.

Animal abuse ANIMAL abuse fines have tripled in Spain’s Valencia region.

Hailed ‘the most ad­ vanced animal rights laws’ in all of Spain, the Valencian Community Courts approved new measures to protect the nation’s animals last week.

The new law will see fines for animal abuse of up to €45,000, three times as much as they were before.

Valencian Communi­ ty councillor for Rural Development, Mireia Mollà, told reporters the new law recognises animals as ‘sentient be­ ings’ deserving of ‘digni­ ty.’

The fine structure works from ‘mild’ (€3,000), to ‘serious’ (€9,000) to ‘very serious’ (€45,000).

Space Hub NATO experts are building a ‘space’ hub among threats from Chinese and Russian weapons.

THE Guardia Civil have arrested an alleged jihadist radical and ter­ rorist in Altea, Alicante.

Officers of the Information Service of the Guardia Civil, support­ ed by EUROPOL detained the suspect on Wednesday, October 20 in the Alicante municipality of Altea. The Moroccan citizen, 50, was arrested for alleged terrorist activities as a radical supporter of the Daesh terrorist group.

Officials report that he centred his activities around searching, editing, commenting on and disseminating Daesh propaganda material. The extremist then identified possible targets on social media, mostly young people, and attempted to recruit and radi­ calise them.

A LORRY driver who overturned his vehicle was six times over the legal alcohol limit.

The accident oc­ curred on the N­334 Almeria to Valencia road within the munici­ pality of Yecla. Guardia Civil were called to the scene when it was re­ ported that a lorry had overturned on the car­ riageway.

The driver of the ve­ hicle is reported to be a 41­year­old Spanish national from Sante Fe in Granada. Emergency personnel at the scene quickly established that the man was un­ der the influence, and a subsequent breath test revealed that he was six times over the legal alcohol limit for professional drivers.

Spanish economy a roller coaster ride

A REPORT by Spanish bank BBVA suggests that the Spanish economy is likely to be something of a roller coaster ride, but the long­ term prognosis is better than might have been ex­ pected with 2020 seeing an overall contraction of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 11.5 per cent followed by growth of up to 6 per cent in 2021.

The first six months of the year had a dramatic effect on production and sales due to the lockdown, but the third quarter has surprised analysts as it likely, when fi­ nally reported, to show a definite turn for the better due to growth in demand not just nationally but for exports as well.

Much will depend on the fourth quarter and the steps that national and regional governments will take in or­ der to combat the rise in positive infections with Covid­19 and exports could

also be harmed as other countries may move back in­ to sporadic lockdown.

There is of course the Spanish Recovery Plan to be considered which will utilise the significant injection of European Union funds into the economy of which ap­ proximately 50 per cent is a grant and the balance is a long­term loan with reason­ able rates of interest.

The lack of international tourism has caused signifi­ cant problems both from an employment perspective where hotels either re­ mained closed or simply shut at the end of Septem­ ber and this had a three­fold effect as tax revenue was lost, staff were placed in ERTE with the government paying for them and third­ party suppliers lost their usual business.

All now rests on how dra­ matic the spike in the coron­ avirus pandemic is and this is something that makes all

Not all doom and gloom LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AT the risk of dripping on like an old tap, I truly do find it difficult to believe that the Covid­19 ‘flat earth’ deniers are still harping on about ‘conspiracies’ and falsified numbers. In all fairness, they do seem to have shifted their stance slightly and albeit reluctantly, now concede that there actually is a problem.

However, never being able to admit they are totally in the wrong, they still maintain the number of cases to be grossly exaggerated. Well, just last weekend I witnessed a young lady from South Yorkshire in tears being interviewed on TV. She was a hospital cleaner.

This plainly distressed young lady, was begging the more cynical members of the public to please take the virus more seriously. Why? Because the hospital cleaners were being traumatised by the ever increasing numbers of body bags

they had to clean for reuse! Last Saturday the whole of South Yorkshire went on to Tier 3. This was after the local authorities had themselves pleaded with the government to raise the level in an effort to contain their huge rise in infections and deaths. Last Sunday there were 3,000 new cases and 174 deaths, in that area alone.

Exaggerated or not, this could still reach around 1,200 deaths a week! I would also like to reiterate to my social media trolls and dissenters, I am not paranoid. I am not a scaremonger and I am not fearful of becoming a victim. In fact, I’m pretty sure, with all my symptoms; I actually had the virus as far back as February.

I’m writing this because I care about other people and consider the sceptics to be misled, naïve and downright dangerous. For all our sakes toe the line, follow the rules, stop blaming the authorities ­ and do all you can to reduce the number of body bags that need to be cleaned for reuse!

Having said all that, I do also believe that in general the virus is on the decline.

(Yaaay). So many have caught it and

recovered, it stands to reason that the disease is unable to spread among communities as easily as it did at the outset. The numbers of re­infections reported are also so small to be almost negligible.

Personally I think we will now only see large outbreaks confined to specific areas. Those parts of the country that have already been hit heavily, will find their number of cases gradually begin to decline.

The important thing is to keep numbers as low as possible so the medical facilities can cope. If this means following the directives of the experts just a little longer, then so be it. I think that come the spring the whole nightmare will be all but over and we will be able to look forward to a New Year slowly returning to relative normality; hopefully without having obscene ‘no jab ­ no job’ experimental vaccines foisted upon us!

Should I apply for TIE before 31 December 2020?

IF you have either the green credit card or the A4 Certificado de Registro (Registration Certificate) you don’t have to obtain the new biometric tarjeta de identidad de extranjero (TIE) card to prove your residency and rights to live in Spain after 31 December 2020. Both the certificate and credit card, AND the TIE card will perform the same function ­ to prove your resident status and rights in Spain.

At the moment no timescale has been an­ nounced for switching to the TIE card either.

If you are choosing to minimise your interac­ tions with others at the moment, you may get some comfort that you don’t have to act

before the end of this year. The process for making a TIE application will not change ei­ ther whether you decide to apply before or after the Brexit transition period ends.

The Spanish government does point out that, looking ahead, there are benefits to the TIE card compared to what it is replacing.

The TIE card: ∙ Explicitly states that the card holder is a beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement; ∙ Contains biometric elements and is more secure than the paper certificate; ∙ Will help facilitate administration proce­ dures; and ∙ Will help the crossing of external borders.

Why did I become grumpy?

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man AS I am truly fed up with Covid, Trump, Boris etc, here’s the story of how I be­ came Mr Grumpy. It’s 100 per cent true and about my first wife.

Back in the early 70’s I met this girl Jackie at the Ideal Homes exhibition in Brighton. She was a model there and I was selling non­stick frying pans ­ a sto­ ry on its own, but anyway after just a few months we were married. We bought a house in East London and that was it.

The problem was back then, when I was in my 20’s, I did what a lot of 20­ year­olds did, which involved drugs, al­ cohol and parties.

My neighbour Fred owned a car lot and also raced a Formula 1 stock car and we used to go to race meetings with Fred and his wife.

One day I woke up and asked Jackie why Fred’s stock car was parked on a trailer outside our house.

She informed me that I had got so drunk the night before and bought it off him. I didn’t have a clue how to race but

over the next few months I learned and raced at various tracks around the coun­ try.

I wasn’t very good compared to the experienced racers who mostly were all in the motor trade and had their own mechanics. I had to pay for a mechanic as I was selling dress fabrics in East Ham shopping hall.

Jackie and I had been married about five years at this point and she’d decid­ ed to leave me. But I came up with a cunning plan to make her stay.

I asked her to come to my next race.

My plan was to crash, she’d rush over to save me, fall in love all over again and decide to stay. She agreed to come and all was going to plan until I realised I was in third place and actually had a chance of winning.

Now I had a tough decision to make.

Go for the win and lose my wife or crash and lose the race, but hopefully keep my wife. I fulfilled my dream of stand­ ing on the podium finishing in third place and I’ve never seen my first wife from that day to this! I also never raced again as it was too damn expensive. But things always turn out for the best ­ the current Mrs S and I have been together for over 35 years!

BEER WITHDRAWAL I WAS reading your article online entitled ‘Lidl withdraw a batch of dangerous beers sold in Spain’ and, I am not sure if it’s only me or not, but I get the feeling that there seems to be a lot in the news recently about supermarkets recalling food items. I don’t know if it is because food standards have changed or some extra regulations elsewhere, but I find it worrying that this seems to be an increasing trend of late.

Most of the news I have seen has been focused at shops in the UK, but this is a worrying trend and I surely can’t be the only one to have noticed.

WITH increasing coronavirus restrictions everywhere, it is easy to see how people are getting frustrated. Guidance is ever changing and, often, not entirely logical or practical.

Earlier this week a shopper was seen tearing the plastic wrapping off children’s clothes in Tesco in Wales in a rage over their classification as ‘non-essential goods.’

Surely many people would agree that buying new, warmer, clothes for their children going into the winter months is not only essential, but fundamental.

A r e v i e w o f t h e U K g o v e r n m e n t ’s w e b s i t e states that you can go to the shops for ‘food and other essentials,’ however, nowhere on the site is there a definitive list as to what constitutes ‘essential’.

In this instance, it would seem to stand that it is up to the public to use ‘common sense’ when deciding on what is allowed as essential, however, with every individual having different life priorities, it stands to reason that ‘essential’ would be different for everyone.

Furthermore, every supermarket chain, store and corner shop will have different ideas about what is essential to their customer base which would see some items for sale in one environment, but not in others.

Ultimately, if the government expects the public to follow the guidance to the letter … then the letters need to be written.

CORRECTIONS

All this government are bothered about is, lining their own pockets and as long as their stomachs are full, Oh, and they can give themselves a pay rise while children can go hungry. And those that voted them in should hang their heads in shame.

Paseo Police As a very regular walker, morning and afternoon on the Paseo in Fuengirola, I am astonished to see the amount of people not wearing masks, while the police just cruise past them and do absolutely nothing. I thought that they were supposed to uphold the law and protect citizens, well they are currently doing neither. Making Choices ROBERT SHALLIS ON a daily basis we make small choices and to varying degrees throughout life.

Our choices in life can define us, they can make or break us and even haunt us.

Best­selling author John C Maxwell, said ‘life is full of choices and every choice you make, makes you.’

We always make a point of reminding our 16­year­old son before he goes out with friends to make the right decision and wise choices.

Where we find ourselves in life can very much be down to the initial choices we have made and therefore, our results are often symptoms of those decisions.

So how do we know when to make the right choices when faced with making an im­ portant decision?

Firstly, it’s important to understand that perception can be very different from one person to another, therefore, it can seem that whatever choice you make could be the wrong one depending on whom you talk to.

However, if it feels right and feels good, it usually comes from a space that will benefit most for the greater good. Making a decision from your heart tends to come from your true self which can be a good indicator.

Decisions are also made from the head as well as the heart, understandably so, it can be easy to become confused as each can contradict the other and lead to procrastina­ tion.

But whatever choice you make depending on its relevance can sometimes be frighten­ ing, which is why many of us just cannot commit to making a decision at all. Too many of us play it safe and therefore deny our­ selves the opportunity to grow, develop, benefit and expand in life.

Years later we can have regrets and can find ourselves saying, ‘if only I’d decided to do this or that all those years ago, look where we’d be now.’ However, faced with the op­ portunity to have the same choices again, you’d be surprised how many people would repeat the same pattern over again. People are so concerned about making the wrong choices they simply make none. So, make a choice, make it from the heart and take a leap of faith. If it’s the wrong choice, at the very least, you’ll find out quicker.

I see making a choice as a fork in the road analogy, asking myself, which one I should take and often naturally think that if I take the wrong one, it’s a bad choice. Again, I go with my heart and choose what feels right however, I accept that circumstances can change and what may have felt the right thing to do at the time can sometimes turn out with hindsight to be the wrong decision.

It’s ok to make mistakes, we’re human af­ ter all. Wrong decisions are a part of life al­ though, understanding why we’ve made them helps us grow. It is an opportunity to learn, accept the consequences and not to dwell on the choice you’ve made, simply move on knowing you are a little wiser than you were before.

Remember, the quicker you learn what is wrong, the quicker you can unravel what is right.

So start to make those all­important choic­ es today and understand that the right choice is not always the easiest, but making a decision one way or another can lead to some wonderful opportunities.

Mistakes can be rectified and forgotten but regret can last a lifetime.

Bargain bidding AN Italian town is selling off abandoned homes for €1 in an attempt to reverse a trend of depopulation.

Over the next few weeks, dozens of dilapidated properties will go under the hammer in Salemi in Sicily, with prices start­ ing at €1. Town mayor, Domenico Venuti, told CNN Travel he wants to breathe new life into Salemi, which saw its popula­ tion drop considerably when at least 4,000 residents left after an earthquake that shook Sicily’s Belice Valley in 1968.

He said all the buildings belong to the city council, which al­ lows for a speedy sale with less red tape.

Venuti pointed out that prior to launching the scheme, the council first had to recover old parts of Salemi where the houses are located.

This meant upgrading infrastructure and services, including roads, sewage pipes and electric grids.

Arson Attempt

GERMANY’S ‘Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases’ was attacked as part of an arson attempt on the facility overnight on Saturday, October 24.

According to a report from the Berlin police, the building, which advises the German government on public health mea­ sures to stem the coronavirus pandemic, was attacked by sever­ al assailants causing damage to one of the windows before secu­ rity guards arrived on the scene. The guards witnessed the attackers throw bottle­based incendiary devices at the building, which caused mild damage.

Thankfully, no­one was hurt.

Collaring insight and empathy A JAPANESE engineer and biologist has invented a collar which can tell us exactly what our pet dog is feeling at any given time through colour changes.

The invention, named Inupathy (a combination of insight and empathy) works by analysing dogs’ heart rates using al­ gorithms which vary depending on the current activity and translate the results into a colour code. Red means nervous, blue relaxed, white concentrating and rainbow happiness, in­ ventor Joji Tamaguchi explained.

The collar also connects automatically to a mobile app which gathers emotional and physical data on the dog each day and later reports on the intensity of feelings reported, al­ lowing owners to better understand their four­legged friends, Tamaguchi has said.

by Mark Slack IT comes as a surprise to non­ car passengers in Volvo’s XC60 that the Swedish car maker produces an even bigger SUV. The reason is that the XC60 feels spacious enough to host a modest public meeting (social­ ly distanced), with enough room in the boot to cater for their hunger and thirst too.

Smaller, in a surprisingly good way, is the car’s thirst for petrol. Its engine is backed up by an electric motor which takes power from a battery charged when you plug it in and also when you brake (a plug­in hybrid, in other words), and the result was an impres­ sive 5.5l/100km (51mpg) over a mixed driving week.

The secret is plugging in when you can, and for most a home and work charger will be the answer. Our public charge point network is shameful.

With a claimed range of 33 miles on pure electric, the best I achieved with the XC60 was 29 miles, but still sufficient for a reasonable one way com­ mute.

In a car this big and one that pulls with real purpose when overtaking, and in near silence, it is very impressive. The four­ cylinder, 2.0­litre tur­

bocharged and supercharged engine doesn’t disappoint.

Perhaps even more impres­ sive, and rather harder to build into a car, is the sense that everything you see or touch is there to make your progress just a little more comfortable and keep you calm when all around are feeling flustered.

The big touchscreen is a model of logical clarity even if features like heating and venti­ lation still work better as knobs you grasp; not symbols you stab with an outstretched finger.

There’s more serenity on display in the very upmarket version of the XC60 you see here, with an interior finished not in the black that seems to come as standard these days but in soft, light nappa leather. And very good it looks too, backed up by grey drift wood inlays, adding a IMPRESSIVE: Generous with space and comfort.

Pro costs €64,962 (£58,920) but packs enough standard kit to keep most of us happy and, being Volvo, a plethora of safe­ ty features. A very classy act.
