CARITAS Spain was founded in 1957 and is the Catholic Church’s official charity and social relief organisation.

It gives food to those who are unemployed or find them­ selves in other unfortunate circumstances and do not have family support.

Albox has two branches, Caritas del Pueblo near the town hall and Caritas de la Lo­ ma in Plaza San Francisco.

Families in need register with their town hall to access the Caritas food banks but as a result of the Covid outbreak, more families than ever are in need of this support.

The charity is struggling to meet these families’ needs and with its supplies already low, it is increasingly likely that it will be unable to carry out the normal Christmas food drive in supermarkets this December.

A donation box will be pro­ vided for those who prefer to give money, which will enable

Caritas to purchase the sup­ plies.

“Please help if you can,” said the Almanzora Group of Friends and the Albox Foreign Residents’ Association, who have provided a list of the most­needed items.

Better equipped THE Poniente Consortium of Fire Brigades now has four thermal cameras.

“Mainly they will detect the presence of people in fires that have produced a great deal of smoke,” the Consortium’s presi­ dent, Jose Juan Rodriguez ex­ plained.

“Thanks to their multiple op­ tions and thermal levels, the cameras can also detect gas leaks and similar hazards,” he added.

ALMERIA City Hall intends its Caja de Luz (Box of Light) to be­ come a draw for selfie­takers between now and Christmas.

Referring to the square structure in Plaza del Educador that resembles a gift box made entirely of lightbulbs, Mayor Ra­ mon Fernandez­Pacheco explained that the local government was going all out to stimulate the city’s commerce.

The mayor called on residents and visitors to visit the Caja de Luz and share their photos on the social media.

“We shall be installing more attractions like these in the city centre, where they will not be removed after Christmas but remain until March 31,” Fernandez­Pacheco said.

Lady Luck smiles on Albox ALBOX residents shared a €350,000 lottery win last week.

Antonio Fernandez, who sells coupons for ONCE, Spain’s organisation for the visually­impaired, sold 10 tickets, each worth €35,000 to the winner.

Fernandez, who has been selling the ONCE lottery since 2004 from his kiosk in Avenida Pio XII, said he was “happy and proud.”

He added that he believed the prize had gone to people who needed the money. “That’s the greatest joy of all,” he said.

Dodger

THE parents of two chil­ dren aged four and 13 used them to shoplift clothes.

After removing the se­ curity tags from garments in the Centro Comercial Torrecardenas shopping centre, the mother would give them to the children who took them to their father waiting in his van.

Witnessing the thefts, the National Police searched the vehicle, dis­ covering clothes valued at €419, and arrested the parents.

The children are now in the care of relatives, po­ lice sources revealed.

NIBS EXTRA ICU upgrade BEDS in Poniente hospital’s Intensive Care Unit will increase from 12 to 26 while a further 1,000 square metres are to be added to A and E, which attends to more emergencies than any other Andalucia hospital, according to official statistics.

Further hospital areas will be redesigned, benefiting other services including the dialysis department.

Once this was established, the authorities would be able to determine the degree of absenteeism in vulnerable and at-risk families, Jimenez said.

for Roquetas ROQUETAS could find itself in the running to be chosen as the location for Almeria Province’s future Film City.

Manolo Garcia, the PSOE party’s spokesman on Roquetas de Mar Council, recently met the project’s promoters, who are currently looking for land in a ‘suitable area’ in Almeria.

If Roquetas were chosen for the €15 million scheme, this would generate more than a million jobs, Garcia pointed out.

“This is an opportunity that Roquetas cannot allow to pass it by,” he declared.

Aware of the potential advantages for the town, Garcia an­ nounced that the PSOE intended to propose a motion at the council’s next plenary meeting, suggesting that the local gov­ ernment should look for municipally­owned land that would be suitable for the Film City project.

This could be ceded in exchange for an annual fee, as hap­ pened with other local installations including the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones centre, Garcia suggested.

The PSOE party intended to propose support for the Film City project at the next council meeting, he said.

“We also need to attract the attention of sectors that could free us from total dependency on agriculture and tourism,” the PSOE spokesman argued.

MANUEL CORTES: Call for responsibility at Halloween.

Beacon of Hope AN eight­year­old boy has been called a “beacon of hope” for people at risk of blindness after receiving cutting­edge gene replace­ ment therapy.

The boy is the first ever Canadian to receive this in­ genious new therapy for his rare form of blindness which left the boy, Sam, unable to make out shapes in the dark, seeing the sky

on a cloudy day, and had trouble making out his shoes.

It was a very worrying time for Sam and his family as his condition was pro­ gressive and would only get worse as he got older but there was no known treatment for it.

Thanks to this ingenious new treatment the boy’s sight has improved tenfold.

Access Denied A NEW face­covering detection technolo­ gy, first used in Whiteley’s Garden Centre in Mirfield, West Yorkshire to detect if shoppers were wearing a face mask, is now being rolled out across retail stores in the UK. The technology involves cam­ eras being fitted at the entrance to stores that are able to detect whether a person is wearing a covering over their mouth or nose.

If the system detects a shopper is not wearing a face mask, a red message flash­ es onto a screen and they are denied ac­ cess.

It means shops installing the software no longer have to manually staff the door and workers can avoid altercations with HITLER’S globe­shaped bar is being sold at auction and resembles the globe, which the Führer so desperately wanted to con­ quer.

POLICE in the UK have been granted ac­ cess to details of people told to self­iso­ late by the Test and Trace system.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has confirmed it had “agreed on a memorandum of under­ standing with the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC)” to provide forces with the information on a “case­by­case ba­ sis.”

In a statement, the DHSC said: “It is a legal requirement for people who have tested positive for Covid­19 and their close contacts to self­isolate when for­ mally notified to do so.”

Police can issue fines starting at £1,000 for first offences, which can scale up to £10,000 for repeat offences and serious breaches of the law.

Thailand Protests CHEMICAL filled water canons were used on thousands of protestors who took to the streets in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, October 17, in a united call for the release of a number of activists who were recently arrested for ‘violence against the Queen.’

The protests are part of ongoing youth-led anti-monarchy sentiment which is continuing to boil over in the country.

Despite the Prime Minister, Prayut Chn-OChan, having implemented a national state of emergency, protesters defied the government order and held a second subsequent night of protests.

Several hundred riot police confronted the 2,000 strong group of protestors, firing water cannons filled with chemicals at the crowd in efforts to disperse them from the city’s main shopping district.

Piers, who was previously fined £10,000 for organising a rally, was also in attendance. He could be seen shouting into a megaphone with his fist raised in the air.

The group wants an end to face masks and also want to stop any coronavirus vaccines.

Settlement THE family of a civilian contractor who was accidentally killed by a trainee F-16 pilot has been awarded an undisclosed settlement.

The F-16 pilot, along with his instructor, were undertaking his first night-time live fire exercise when they both mistook the observation area for the target. The unnamed pilot shot Charles Holbrook, 53, through the head with a 20mm round. Mr Holbrook was rushed to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Centre in Alamogordo, New Mexico but later died.

Mr Holbrook’s wife filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of herself and their 14-yearold daughter. A settlement has now been awarded for an undisclosed amount by the United States Magistrate on Wednesday, October 14.

Arboleas Defibrillators

THE first defibrillator in Arboleas was installed recently at the Arboleas Town hall. The mayor of Arboleas, Cristobal Garcia Granados invited members of the now extinct FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) Committee to see the defibrillator in situ. FACE had acted as bankers for the project.

This is the first of four defibrillators, one of which will be a mobile ma­ chine to be fitted inside the Local Police car. The sites for the remaining two defibrillators have as yet not been announced.

Eight people have already been trained in how the defibrillators can be used correctly. There will be training for more people in the not too distant future. The Arboleas Council does have a bank account for dona­ tions, and there is a shortfall in the amount of money raised to cover training and installation expenses. If anyone would like to contribute to­ wards the defibrillators, please drop into the town hall or the Cajamar Banco in the town.

Insecure Data WOMEN across the UK are reporting that Track & Trace isn’t safe, as cases of harassment soar.

Any venue in the leisure and tourism industry or close contact services are all required to gather certain information. All busi­ ness owners and event organisers are supposed to ensure there is a system to record personal data.

That way everyone who may have come into contact with them can be informed helping prevent a localised outbreak.

Venues are supposed to share the information with Test and Trace teams and, according to guidelines, data is supposed to be stored safely, then destroyed after 21 days.

However, women are complaining that the system has become a stalker’s dream as cases of harassment rise.

Xmas ready Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine has been confirmed to be ready by December as video footage re­ leased on Sunday, October 18, saw thousands of doses come off the production line.

The world has held its breath waiting for a coronavirus vaccine to be developed and available so that the world can get back to nor­ mality and start to pick up the pieces of our shattered economy,

Working Class WHITE, working­class boys from low­income homes are by far the most underprivileged children in Britain in comparison with any other group, ac­ cording to evidence given at the Education Commit­ tee’s inquiry into why poor white children do so badly at school by Profes­ sor Matthew Goodwin.

According to the Depart­ ment for Education, just 13

per cent of white boys from families on benefits, go on to higher education.

Yet 27 per cent of similar black Caribbean boys go to university, 42 per cent of Pakistani, 51 per cent of black African and 66 per cent of Chinese boys.

It is a staggering fact that only 2 per cent of white, working­class chil­ dren get into the most prestigious universities.

On the Move SPAIN’S army wants to ‘decongest’ the Madrid Community where 30 per cent of its soldiers are stationed.

It hopes to relocate them to underpopulated areas of Spain and has already moved the Castillejos Division’s HQ to Huesca.

At present the army owns 236 properties classed as ‘unnecessary.’ Of these, 140 are located in urban areas, often in the centre of big cities, and their sale could finance relocating to other parts of Spain.

“These barracks cannot be sold until they are empty and they won’t be empty until their occupants have moved,” the same sources said. “It’s a vicious circle.”

Bad Jobs at Risk Beer AN industry watchdog has fined Heineken’s pub business £2m for forcing pubs to sell ‘un­ reasonable levels’ of its own beers and ciders.

The major beer brand runs Star Pubs and Bars, and according to the Pubs Code Adju­ dicator (PCA), it ‘seri­ ously and repeatedly’ broke rules for three years after receiving complaints from sever­ al pubs that were pres­ sured into selling Heineken brands ­ which includes Amstel, Birra Moretti and Bul­ mers cider.

Star Pubs includes 2,500 pubs of which, 1,900 are covered by the PCA in England and Wales.

PUB group Marston’s have said that new coronavirus restric­ tions announced by the govern­ ment have put 2,150 jobs at risk.

The harsher restrictions en­ forced by the British govern­ ment have been called “hugely disappointing” by Marston’s who state there is a lack of evi­ dence linking pubs to the recent rise in Covid­19 numbers.

“Inevitably, and regrettably, recent restrictions will impact jobs,” the company said,

PUBS: Hugely disappointed. adding: “we have reluctantly concluded that around 2,150 pub­based roles currently sub­ ject to furlough are going to be impacted.” Marston’s owns 1,400 pubs and employs around 14,000 people across the UK.

Lloyds Staff Cuts LLOYDS Banking Group announced more jobs cuts on Thursday October 15, with 125 office staff being readied to be let go.

The company which employs a total of 65,000 people, across its Bank of Scotland, Halifax and Lloyds brands, is however ex­ pected to create around 62 new roles, meaning a net loss of 63 employees.

According to Accord, which is one of its staff unions, the group’s internal audit team and retail chief operating office are likely to be most affected.

This latest announcement from the group regarding more job cuts comes after they announced in September 2020 that it was preparing plans to simplify parts of its business.

THE Spanish government confirmed on Thursday, October 15, that it will increase the IVA on sugary and sweetened drinks from 10 per cent to 21 per cent, to promote healthier habits and lifestyles.

The measure is included in the budget plan that the Executive has sent to Brussels. Taxes are to be imposed on certain behaviours that are harmful to the environment, health or society in general to raise the cost of their consumption.

The measure is part of a new package which the government intends to use to modify the Spanish tax system. “The estimated impact of the set of tax measures and the new Law against Tax Fraud stands at €6,847m in 2021 and €2,323m in 2022 on a cash basis,” explained the government.

RUSSIA has engaged in a propaganda campaign to tarnish the UK’s Covid­19 vaccine which is being developed by the University of Oxford.

The outrageous claims being made by the Russians insist that the vaccine will turn humans into monkeys because they are using chimpanzee virus, which is spreading fear across the nation.

The amusing, but at the same time ex­ tremely damaging images and videos, suggest that any vaccine in the UK is un­ safe.

One of the images displays Boris John­ son photoshopped to look like an abom­ inable snowman captioned, ‘I like my big­ foot vaccine.’

This sort of post worryingly can harm the work of the Oxford scientist and will only add fuel to the anti­vaccine enthusiast.

Swingers THE world’s rarest ape, the Hainan gibbon, could be saved from extinction by rope bridges.

After a landslide divided their territory on the South Chinese island of Hainan, the already endangered gibbon is at new risk of extinction as its feeding and breeding ground has been severely limited. But experts say that building rope bridges across two areas of their forest could allow them to expand their territory.

Since these gibbons are exclusively treedwellers, they cannot hope to cross the damaged forest floor without help.

Rope bridges could also be used to connect habitats in other areas, experts say, expanding the territory of the endangered gibbons even further.

A BERLIN court has overturned bar clo­ sures and deems it was a ‘dispropor­ tionate’ measure.

On Saturday, October 10, Berlin city au­ thorities ordered bars and restaurants to close from 11pm to 6am as infection numbers continued to climb. However, a Berlin court has now overturned the bar closures and claims it is a “disproportion­ ate encroachment on freedoms, as the new infections are more likely to stem from family and religious gatherings, trav­ el and community facilities.”

Angel Merkel and the German pre­ miers had agreed to adopt the curfew if the number of new infections passed the threshold of 35 per 100,000 people in seven days. Now Merkel is warning that the country is heading for “disas­ ter.”

Rod Wescombe announced the death of the former AC/DC guitarist, Paul Matters, via Facebook on Wednesday, October 14, saying he was “shocked and saddened” to hear of his

AC/DC death.

Matters joined AD/DC in 1975 but lasted only a few short weeks before he was fired by lead singer Bon Scott. He then retired from music completely and led ‘a

reclusive life.’

Playing tribute to his friend’s life, Wescombe said on Facebook: “I first met Paul in 1973 when he was playing bass in ‘Armageddon’ at a gig in Hamilton, Newcastle NSW. “I recall he could always make me laugh when he was in the mood.”

£20m Fine Cash Buns BRITISH AIRWAYS have been fined £20 million by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) over data breach which affected more than 400,000 customers.

Following an investigation lasting almost two years, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) concluded that British Airways did not have sufficient security measures in place to process such a significant amount of personal data.

In a statement, the ICO said, “People entrusted their personal details to BA and BA failed to take adequate measures to keep those details secure.”

BRAZILIAN senator, Chico Rodrigues, hid cash be­ tween his buttocks during a police raid on his home.

Police raided the home of Rodrigues, who is an ally of Brazil’s far­right president Jair Bolsonaro, on Wednesday, October 14, as part of an investiga­ tion into misappropriation of public funds during the pandemic. When police searched his house they found the Brazilian senator had hidden cash between his buttocks.

The Estado de São Paulo reported 30,000 reais (€4,500) was concealed in Rodrigues’s under­ pants, clenched between his buttocks. A local magazine, Revista Crusoé reported some of the re­ covered notes were stained with faeces.

Spend time in Spain or have a Spanish holiday home?

What 2021 means for your freedom of movement When the Brexit transition period officially ends on 31 December, UK nationals lose the automatic right to come and go in Spain that has been in place for 48 years.

From 1 January, only those who have already established lawful Spanish residence or EU citizenship will have unlimited access to the country.

So if you spend a lot of time in Spain but intend to remain UK resident, things are about to become much more complicated.

While we remain confident that Spain will continue to welcome UK visitors, as no-one knows what the new immigration requirements will be, we can only speculate based on existing rules for nonEU/EEA (‘third country’) nationals.

The 90-days in 180-days rule Unless there is an alternative UK/Spain agreement, from 2021, non-Spanish resident UK citizens will be limited to visiting Spain for

What constitutes “proof ” here could be open to interpretation, so it is risky to delay starting the application process. As well as gathering as much evidence as you can, you also need to ensure you meet the residence requirements by not spending too much time in the UK. Note that in becoming Spanish resident, you will likely also be deemed tax resident in Spain, so take care to meet your obligations here. Spanish taxation is complex, but the way you hold your wealth and assets can make a significant difference to your tax bill. A locally-based adviser with cross-border

While it’s not quite “now or never” for securing access to Spain, it will certainly get harder from 2021, so weigh up your options now for making the most of what Spain has to offer.

4G is coming … to the Moon, but it’s not just all for Facebook and Insta­ gram likes.

Nokia has won a $14.1m (€12m) funding contract from the US space agency to develop and build a 4G network across the moon.

The new contract is part of a massive $370m (€315m) range of con­ tracts that were issued on Wednesday, October 14.

The contracts have been issued as part of Nasa’s renewed push to return to the moon in 2024.

Nasa said, “The system could support lunar sur­ face communications at greater distances, in­ creased speeds, and pro­ vide more reliability than current standards.”

The installation of the network could also help in the development of a permanent future base on the moon.

FORMER shareholder of the regional airline Flybe is in talks to revive the airline.

Flybe was called into ad­ ministration in early March, causing more than 2,300 job losses. After securing fund­ ing from multiple sources the airline eventually folded

Now, former shareholder, Cyrus Capital, is in talks with its administrators in a bid to relaunch the airline.

Virus Free RESEARCH carried out by US Transportation Command (US­ TRANSCOM) using United aeroplanes, shows that when masks are worn, the risk of ex­ posure to Covid­19 is ‘virtually non­existent.’

To try to avoid these breaches, the Ministry of Health and Fami­ lies of the Junta de Andalucia and the Andalucian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) have reinforced the measures so that these quaran­ tines are strictly followed.

THE UK Space Agency has today backed a healthcare drone start­up founded by NHS staff, to help in the re­ sponse to Covid­19.

The pandemic has seen the country pulling togeth­ er, with organisations across the space sector stepping forward to help.

Apian, part of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Pro­ gramme, aims to establish a network of secure air corridors for electric drones to navigate via satellite­enabled GPS. Each drone will be able to carry Covid­19 samples, test­kits and PPE. This will avoid courier call­out wait­ ing times, free­up NHS staff, reduce unnecessary physical contact and min­ imise the risk of secondary transmission of the virus.

49 Mile Marathon

A WOMAN competing in this year’s virtual London marathon accidently did 49 miles after poor GPS reception meant she travelled nearly double the nor­ mal distance.

Poor Jodey Hopcroft suffered a huge technology failure when her phone app failed to register her miles covered, meaning she had to walk nearly another 26.2 miles in order to officially com­ plete the distance.

The event was held ‘virtually’ for amateurs this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, using the Virgin Money London Marathon app, which was used to track par­ ticipant’s progress.

Campaign CAMPAIGN group #SaveNightclubs aim to help many UK nightclubs who fear closure due to the pandemic and subse­ quent restrictions.

The group says they are a nationwide coali­ tion representing over 100 nightclubs and thou­ sands of staff, who are urging the UK govern­ ment to #SaveNight­ clubs.

According to the group, they are not ask­ ing to risk public health, but rather, are asking for a lifeline to help the in­ dustry survive in the coming weeks and months.

In a survey by the group, more than half of the 100 nightclubs they are representing fear they could close within a month with around four­ fifths expecting to close permanently by Christ­ mas.

Huge Gesture A GROUP of friends hired a crane to surprise a cancer pa­ tient in hospital.

The women rented the crane to visit a friend with can­ cer who has been in a hospital in Argentina for two months.

The coronavirus pandemic has meant visits to Gabriela, 52, have been restricted, and although her friends stay in touch through video calls, the women wanted to do some­ thing special.

They had the crane placed underneath her bedroom window at the Fleming Hospi­ tal, and surprised Gabriele with an ‘injection of encour­ agement’ to continue her fight against cancer during the health crisis.

The 12 women, who were carrying balloons and ban­ ners, have all been friends for more than 10 years, having met through a running group from La Plata.

THE Queen carried out first public en­ gagement since the start of the pan­ demic after leaving the royal grounds to visit the Defence Science and Tech­ nology Laboratory.

€9 billion WTO rules on import tariffs

IT is certainly tit for tat in the battle between the European Union and the USA over support for their aircraft manufac­ turers with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) acting in the mid­ dle as each complains about the other.

Put succinctly, both countries submitted complaints to the WTO on October 6, 2004 with the USA complaining that Airbus in France,

Examining the evidence at one of the factories.

A COMBINED operation be­ tween the Guardia Civil, Na­ tional Police and Spanish Tax Agency saw raids at three ille­ gal cigarette factories and the seizure of 43 tons of tobacco, almost 1.5 million packs of cig­ arettes and large amounts of machinery.

The factories which were based in Madrid, Murcia and Alicante were controlled by a Bulgarian gang and the value of the material recovered by this action is said to be €9 mil­ lion with 14 different brands of cigarette being counterfeit­ ed.

A total of 38 different peo­ ple of various nationalities in­

cluding several Ukrainians were arrested during this op­ eration and apart from ma­ chinery capable of producing 189,000 cigarettes a minute, officers also discovered a number of lorries already loaded with cartons ready to be distributed throughout Spain and much of Europe.

Four of the fake cigarette brands being produced, Fortu­ na, Winston, L & M and Chesterfield are particularly popular in Spain and the Tax Agency will have lost huge amounts of VAT and duty from their sale as will the manufacturers of the origi­ nals.

Spanish poverty line DESPITE protestations from the Spanish government that the economy is recovering, a telling report, just issued by Eurostat, (the European statis­ tical office) indicates that Spain is the fifth poorest coun­ try in the European Union and it moves to third place for the country with the poorest resi­ dents under 16.

The Spanish poverty level is based on the number of households that take home less than 60 per cent of the av­ erage annual income and Spain at 20.7 per cent comes after Romania, Latvia, Bulgaria and Estonia, but for poor chil­ dren only Romania and Bul­ garia have more. vived until the winter.

Although BA has been hit with the highest fine ever issued by the UK Information Commissioner’s Of­ fice (ICO), shareholders and compa­ ny executives are breathing a sigh of relief as it was originally believed that the fine for the breach of secu­ rity in 2018 (with 400,000 passenger details lost) would be in the region of £183 million (€200 million).

Spain worried about delay

Minister for the Economy Nadia Calviño.

SPAIN’S Minister for the Econo­ my Nadia María Calviño has in­ dicated that discussions are still taking place concerning dis­ bursement of the European Union’s coronavirus recovery fund, of which Spain is one of the largest potential recipients.

The problem appears to be with regards to control and over­ sight of the use of the funds which were supposed to be dis­ tributed early in the New Year in order to help kickstart members economies.

Speaking to American Bloomberg TV the minister said “We are doing our utmost to ac­ celerate this process so that we can start the implementation of the recovery plan on January 1, 2021.”

She was very upbeat in her

view of the Spanish economy go­ ing forward and suggested that market confidence in Spain is strong and that the ruling minori­ ty government would shortly be able to finalise the 2021 budget which would incorporate dis­ bursement of the European Union funds.

In the meantime, the Euro­ pean Central Bank is buying up Government Bonds and this not only allows countries like Spain to reduce its borrowing from more expensive sources, but means that it is able to reduce its bor­ rowing forecast by almost €15 billion during 2020.

‘Us and them’ I’m afraid LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NEVER has my constant harping about legal aid lawyer fees been more justified than by the events that took place just recently. Nineteen out of 20 illegal immigrants, who, after months of wrangling, were finally being deported, became prevented from leaving, after last minute actions by their lawyers gained them a stay of ‘execution.’

Ultimately, only one finally flew off into the great blue good riddance. Once again the so called ‘activist’ lawyers, managed to retain a lucrative number of customers for their dubious companies, allowing them, under the umbrella of the ridiculous ’uman rights regulations, to bleed the British taxpayer even further.

The amount this modern day, second rate bunch of shylocks is coining in is really quite frightening. I tried a little research and found that their fees begin at something like £100 an hour.

Assuming they spend five hours a day on a case and multiply that by the 19 illegals they managed to hold back, then this batch alone can bring in some £9,500 a DAY. Multiply that by the amount of weeks or months it takes to resolve these cases and you begin to get some idea of the money these individuals are gleefully conning out of the public purse. And these 19 are only one example.

There are literally hundreds of other cases we never even get to hear about.

One assessment I came across, was that lawyers who specialise in immigrant cases are costing the tax payer around £100 million a year! Personally I think that is probably a conservative figure and in reality it is much higher.

You can rest assured than none of these sharks have any moral or patriotic obligations to the British public. They are simply hell bent on screwing the tax payer out of all they can get.

Remember also, these were the same low lifes who went knocking on doors in the Middle East, in an attempt to inveigle the citizens in war areas to lodge complaints against British soldiers

so their companies could begin legal actions against our brave men and women in the military.

They are the lowest of the low and need hitting where it will really hurt, right in their grubby money grabbing wallets. Their fees, particularly where it involves illegal immigrants, must be capped and capped pretty low at that.

If they really do have consciences and truly do care about these people, let ‘em take on a few cases pro bono. Ha! You’ve more chance of having a foxtrot with our dear Queen Elizabeth in Harrods’ window than seeing that particular scenario. Personally I can’t see why the government doesn’t take some action against this very obvious, wholly unacceptable extortion racket.

Unless of course the bosses are all members of the same old boys’ club; which is a far more likely scenario. ‘Us and them’ once again I’m afraid.

Always has been and, until the ‘revolution,’ always will be.

SCUM-BAGS AND TOE-RAGS Joint Forces DAVID WORBOYS C O N T R I B U T O R S to the ‘popular’ newspapers and Twitter tend to dis­ miss people they don’t relate to, or whose opinions they don’t share, in the most aggressive language. If the victims are fortunate, they may get away with being described as morons or idiots. At worst they are scum bags or toe rags.

Celebrities such as politicians, TV presenters, pop singers, footballers and royalty are constantly picked up­ on by invisible commentators armed with a pen ­ or a keyboard. From Jere­ my Corbyn and Bob Geldof to Wayne Rooney and Prince Harry, they have been mocked or viciously attacked.

Popular female targets range from Diane Abbott and Kim Kardashian to Meghan Markle, Victoria Beckham and Nicola Sturgeon ­ all decent, harmless people with their own ways of doing things.

Although it’s not easy to feel sym­ pathy for people who are self­centred

or palpably evil, I don’t find these terms appropriate even for such peo­ ple in our society.

Donald Trump may be a thoroughly unpleasant person, self­absorbed, dishonest and unprincipled. He may preach lies and nonsense about his opponents and may have deeply flawed intelligence and judgement.

But this doesn’t make him a scum bag.

The Sunday Times claims still to be a quality paper and it has some inter­ esting columnists and excellent con­ tributors on subjects such as history, politics and economics.

But, as it seeks to appeal to all lev­ els of taste and education, it also has Camilla Long. I have not met her and can only judge by what she writes, but she comes across as a bitter woman who hates the world around her.

Many of her subjects have granted her an interview in good faith and al­ most all of them are, judging from her text and photographs, more attrac­ tive, more successful ­ and nicer peo­ ple ­ than she is.

She therefore reacts resentfully by tearing them apart in the most hate­

ful way. She mocks their appearance (buck teeth), questions their intelli­ gence (airheads), and sneers at their occupations (clothes horses) for no apparent reason. Furthermore, she writes as if her readership goes along with her diatribes. “As we all know, she hasn’t a clue how to dress.”

Several things alarm me about this.

First is the esteem in which she seems to be held by the readers of this once fine newspaper (under Harold Hob­ son), and second, the fact that she was voted interviewer of the year in 2016 at the British Press awards.

This exemplifies gutter journalism.

To judge from her writing, she regards sex as something dirty. Her favourite words include, ‘bum’, ‘tits’, ‘shag’, ‘cock’ and ‘crap’, terms we used at school. She seems obsessed with body parts and bodily functions, de­ scribed in suitably barrack­room lan­ guage.

What happened to kindness and courtesy? To me this crude intoler­ ance towards the different views and choices, the character and appear­ ance of others suggests she has her own problems.

But she is not a toe rag.

He is now accused of murder with intent and unjustified mal­ ice, having acted without any provocation on the part of the dead prisoner, the judge said.

OUR VIEW How early is too early to put up your Christmas decorations?

WITH Malaga Christmas lights already being constructed and many UK venues putting up their decorations at the beginning of November, we want to know when you think it is too early to put up your Christmas decorations.

Depending on which side of the fence you fall, Xmas decorations in October may feel sublime or ridiculous.

However, psychoanalysts have researched the differing opinions and discovered that putting up decorations early can actually increase the level of excitement and anticipation for the big day and also can affect positive change in people’s mood and attitude.

If you decided to put up a real tree, then this will dictate when you decorate. The British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) does recommend waiting until at least the beginning of December. If the tree is looked after well then it will last four weeks and see you through until just after New Year.

Tradition does dictate that putting up Christmas decorations, including the tree, should wait until the beginning of the Advent. Advent is the fourth Sunday before Christmas and will fall on Sunday, November 29, this year.

U l t i m a t e l y, w h a t y o u c h o o s e t o d o w i t h y o u r Christmas decorations is up to you. Follow time honoured traditions or make up your own. Provided you are happy, healthy and enjoying the time for family and friends then it’s all good … even if it may be over Zoom this year.

Things like trying to pay cash into the bank or trying to use the voucher that the supermarket sent you but you are one day early or one day late.

But what really is getting at me at the moment are ‘experts.’ Not experts with degrees and PhDs who work out of lab­ oratories and secret bunkers with direct data, but the ones sitting in their arm­

chairs and know everything about everything. l don’t mean the ones that have a slightly different point of view.

I’m talking about the ones that ex­ plain why we are all mugs and this is the truth. And how do they know that?

Well because they read or watched something different to what I read or watched and decided that what they read is right and that’s it. They’re actu­ ally very condescending.

It looks like I’ve lost my bet that Trump would last four years. My loss but Cudeca’s gain. I’ve lost a few bets in my time but this one just astounds me because never in my lifetime have I seen and heard directly from people in­ volved with him say what a piece of work he is. Anyone want a bet if he will do another four years? Hopefully it will be in prison. Lock him up!!

If you are a person who looks at every situation through a nega­ tive mindset, it can have an im­ pact on every aspect of your life, including, family, friendships, rela­ tionships and health. Your thought patterns affect your emotions, which in turn, affect your behaviour and actions. For example, if you wake one morn­ ing in a bad mood and consistent­

This may lead to the actions of shouting at family members, be­ coming impatient with work col­ leagues, whilst mentally beating yourself up over your behaviour.

Depending on the issue that each individual is dealing with, there are several ways you can approach this and learn how to change your way of thinking and your coping mechanism.

Write Rather Than Think The first step I take with all of my clients is journalling. Write down your current negative thought. What is the situation that has caused this thought? Do you have any physical evidence that makes this thought true? By writing down your actual thoughts, help you recognise and name it without judgement. You

may even notice that your painful feelings disappear after a while.

‘This too shall pass’ can become words to live by.

You Can’t Control A Person or Situation Outside Of You This is a statement I live by dai­ ly. You are only in control of you!

Whilst you cannot control a situa­ tion or person outside of you, you can control the emotions that you attach to it. Do not dismiss or ig­ nore your emotion as that will not make the pain go away. Acknowl­ edge the distress and accept it as your present reality. Study on experimental blood tests RESEARCHERS believe one day an experimental blood test may be able to detect a range of diseases including cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS).

The study is still in its early stages but researchers believe it opens up vast possibilities and could offer ‘huge potential,’ however they admit it is still far from clinical use.

So far, the method has been tested on 320 patients and controls, and has shown success in finding diseases such as pancreatic cancer, diabetes, traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis.

Scientists have known for some time that dying cells release fragmented DNA into the circulating blood. When cells die, it can mean a disease is just beginning to take hold, and the researchers are now looking at new methods in which they can use this knowledge to identify diseases from a blood test, detecting cell death in specific tissues.

The technology is based on next-generation DNA sequencing.

Dutch researchers carried out a series of studies to see if mindfulness stops people from eating excessively. They analysed data on more than 400 people who had undergone regular weighins over two and a half years.

It found people who are ‘naturally mindful’ were better able to recognise when they are hun-

TWO quick glances ­ inside and out ­ might be enough to put this Mazda high on your list of desirable ‘smaller’ hatchbacks.

Especially if the Mazda3 you’re looking at comes with €870 (£790) worth of ‘soul red crystal metallic’ paint. It looks stunning!

Mazda was early to discover the pulling power of a fancy red finish (it’s now on its second, even more alluring version) and you’ll have noticed how every­ one else seems to have caught the bug too.

However, this latest Mazda3, priced at €30,080 (£27,375), has more than colour on its side. The GT Sport has a clever 2.0­litre petrol engine that adds €1,736 (£1,580) to the bottom line com­ pared to sticking with the older engine.

The new power unit comes with what Mazda calls spark controlled compression ignition which mixes conventional petrol engine technology with a touch of diesel cleverness to produce better economy and emissions.

On maximum power the 2.0­

litre engine acts like a normal petrol unit, where the spark plug sets off the fuel and air mixture in the car’s four cylinders.

Ease back on the throttle (which means most of the time in a typical drive) and the engine turns clever enough for Mazda to claim a world first for this technology in a petrol engine.

In essence, the spark plug ig­ nites a tiny ball of fuel­rich mix­ ture which expands so fast the rest of the much leaner mixture in the cylinder ignites itself, as happens in a diesel engine.

So, the new engine produces 178bhp against the 120bhp of the current (and continuing) en­ gine but official fuel economy under tougher and more real world WLTP testing is as good as 5.5l/100 km (51.4 mpg) com­ pared to the 6.2l/100 km (45.6 mpg) of the older engine.

You can sometimes feel (and hear) the new technology in ac­ tion, with distant diesel­like hammering at some speeds and there’s a need to rev the engine to extract full overtaking poten­ tial, but it’s a convincing case of

cleverness, without doubt.

The rest of the car is more typically old school Mazda, which is nearly all a positive. Add a sharp styling package and the Mazda makes for a competitive and attractive package.

Rashford Takes On Government Positive Rossi BACK in June, the Manchester United and England forward, Marcus Rashford MBE, forced a govern­ ment U­turn on the provision of holiday food vouchers, and has now stepped up his campaign to end child hunger and food poverty.

Rashford, who was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to vulner­ able children, is appealing to the public to support his bid to help less fortunate children.

“Whatever your feeling, opinion or judgement, food poverty is never the child’s fault... let’s protect our young,” he said, adding: “Let’s wrap arms around each other and stand together to say that this is unacceptable, that we are united in protect­ ing our children.

“Today, millions of children are finding them­ selves in the most vulnerable of environments and are beginning to question what it really means to be British.

“I’m calling on you all today to help me prove to them that being British is something to be proud of.”

Rashfod tweeted: “Remember when I said I was going to need your help... For the millions who do not have the platform to be heard. Let’s stand as a ‘United’ Kingdom to #endchildfoodpoverty. Sign the petition today.”

The petition has already received more than 61,000 signatures. At 100,000 signatures, the peti­ tion will be considered for debate in Parliament.

RASHFORD: Helping those children who are less fortunate.

VALENTINO ROSSI, 41, an Italian professional motorcycle road racer and multiple MotoGP World Champion, is now set to miss two MotoGP races due to a recent positive coronavirus test.

The racer released a statement on social media confirming that he tested positive for the virus and now he fully expects to be unable to race in, at least, the next two MotoGP races of the season.

The Italian, who has won the world champion title nine times, is currently 13th in this season’s rankings.

In his statement, he said, “Unfortunately, this morning I woke up and I was not feeling good.

“My bones were sore, and I had a slight fever, so I immedi­ ately called the doctor who test­ ed me twice.”

He added, “I am so disap­ pointed that I will have to miss the race at Aragon.

“I’d like to be opti­ mistic and confident, but I expect the second round in Aragon to be a no­go for me as well.”

Rossi’s first quick PCR test showed as negative, however his second test revealed a posi­ tive result.
