TORREVIEJA City Council has employed 10 unem­ ployed people thanks to the huge €284,323.66 grant from the EMCORP 2020 programme.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, accompa­ nied by the councillor for Development and Employ­ ment, Domingo Paredes, has welcomed 10 women who will now work full­time in the Torrevieja consistory for the next six months.

The workers consist of: six social workers, an ar­ chitect and three adminis­ trative technicians.

They have been hired for a variety of different

departments across a range of areas in the City Council such as: Social Services, Projects, Public Works and a range of oth­ er departments.

The exceptionnaly gen­ erous grant to help im­ prove employment oppor­ tunities for the unemployed people in the town were part of actions carried out by the Torre­ vieja City Council, through the Local Development Agency (ADL).

The grant also offers ini­ tiatives for training, inno­ vation, business aid and the promotion of entre­ preneurship and aims to

Fear and Intimidation THE Partido Independencia Orihuela Costa (PIOC) says the coast is currently operat­ ing under a cloud of fear and intimidation.

The party has been meet­ ing residents of the coast re­ garding the various issues raised and what they are said to have uncovered is that businesses and associations are operating under a fear of reprisals if they become in­ volved in politics.

They have also found that associations felt they have been intimidated if they get in­ volved and has concluded that this could be the dirty side of politics that other parties are prepared to use to keep their stranglehold on the coast.

The PIOC believe the coast is operating under a cloud of fear and intimidation and that the residents are back­ ing them, however, their voices have to remain silent as any word of support for the party could result in an unexpected visit from the po­ lice to check their premises.

Maximum Responsibility THE councillor for Security has warned the people of Elche to act with “maximum responsibil­ ity” when enjoying the Alicante nightlife.

Councillor José Ramón González issued the message af­ ter nightly Alicante police opera­ tions had caught more people from Elche, a lot believed to be illegal immigrants, enjoying the nightlife in the city of Alicante.

Auction Success A SUCCESSFUL charity auction had happy tails wagging as a lot of money was raised for three local dog charities.

The Happy Tails charity auction on Wednesday October 7 at La Zona in Los Alcazares was blessed by a beautiful day of sunshine as people turned up to enjoy a wonderful day of fundraising.

Eighteen stalls were set up with a fantastic variety of products as people shopped happily in their masks and enjoyed socially dis­ tanced drinks and food whilst the auction lots began.

In total 39 lots, auctioned by the fabulous auctioneering skills of Joanne Scott, were sold from hair do’s and make­up, car repairs, oven cleans, house cleans, Spanish/ English wills and many other bargains.

When all the money was totalled, the event raised the spectacu­ lar amount of €1,625, with the monies raised going to three local dog charities: PAPS, Los Infiernos and Animales Unicos, whose rep­ resentatives were thrilled to receive such great amounts.

Lesley Eburne, the organiser, said “we are delighted to be able to hand this money over to these shelters who work tirelessly to look after so many abandoned, sick, new born puppies and mis­ treated animals.”

Murcia Covid Tribute MURCIA paid tribute to the 56,000 Covid­19 deaths by filling the Isidoro Valcarcel Medina Garden with thousands of Spanish flags on Sunday morning.

The National Association of Victims and People affected by Coronavirus (ANVAC) chose the garden, to­ gether with Avenida Juan de Borbón, for the tribute which followed the ‘Memory and Justice’ events held in Sevilla (Parque Alamillo), Madrid (Parque Roma) and Valencia (Playa de la Patacona).

ANVAC volunteers took to the garden and Avenida in the early hours of Sunday October 18 to plant thousands of Spanish flags in an emotional act of remembrance for those who lost their lives to the virus.

Motorcyclist Dies A MOTORCYCLIST died in a road accident in Torre Pacheco after several calls to the emergency services warned they had heard an explosion.

Mobile emergency units and the Local Police of Torre Pacheco arrived at the scene to find the rider unconscious next to the rail­ ings.

The incident happened at 6.30pm on Sunday October 18 at the height of the Pacheco Torre Tower, next to the bridge of Pa­ sico, where firefighters were also called to the scene because the motorcycle had caught fire.

Sadly, attempts by the UME doctors to save the motorcyclist’s life proved unsuccessful, according to reports, with no informa­ tion being made available yet about the deceased person.

Cultural Programme AWARD WON: For the Sea of Music festival.

CARTAGENA’S ‘The Sea of Music’ festival has won the Best Cul­ tural Programme in Spain at the virtual Iberian Festival Awards ceremony. Cartagena has been recognised for the work and pro­ gramming of the festival and judged against other festivals in Spain and Portugal held in 2019.

The awards go to the best festivals, artists, sponsors and the media from all over the Iberian Peninsula. Due to the coron­ avirus pandemic, the awards ceremony went virtual this year af­ ter being rescheduled twice already.

The Sea of Music festival (La Mar de Músicas) incorporates, in addition to music, the arts, cinema and literature and has previ­ ously won an award at the Iberian Festival Awards ceremony in 2017. That year the Cartagena festival, which is organised each year by the City Council, received the award for Best Small For­ mat Festival.

Illegal Tobacco AN illegal tobacco factory has been put out of action in Al­ batera thanks to a continued operation from the Guardia Civil, the National Police and the Tax Agency.

The factory had the capacity to produce more than 18,000 cigarettes per minute and was raided by officers carrying out operation TERVEL­CENTINELA, which also saw the dis­ mantlement of illegal tobacco factories in Móstoles and Murcia.

In total, 38 people were arrested as part of this phase of the operation with 11 of those being apprehended in Albat­ era which saw more than 12,000 kilos of tobacco recovered.

The industrial warehouse had two fully operational ciga­ rette production lines with the machinery and cardboard necessary for packaging cigarettes of 14 different brands.

Officers in the Albatera raid confirmed they arrested five people of Bulgarian nationality, five Ukrainians and one Russian.

Learning Languages Outdoors MURCIA is ready to launch its 12th consecutive year of Language Clubs, however, this year is set for a change.

The scheme will see near­ ly 400 students between 12 and 17 years old given the chance to learn English, French or German using non­formal educational, recreational and free­time activities.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the completely free lessons will be taught outdoors with specific spaces designated for this year’s Language Clubs.

Spaces with patios, gar­ dens and outdoor annexes have been prioritised, to provide a safe and hygienic global experience for the

students as they get to learn their chosen language without being confined to a classroom.

This active learning pro­ posal also allows students to learn and gain knowl­ edge of the local environ­ ment, the local districts and of the city of Murcia itself.

The thought behind this year’s change was to min­ imise exposure to the con­ tagion which is said to thrive in confined spaces.

Each group will be made up of 18 students, which will be constituted by age and divided into two sub­groups, all supported by a monitor who will guide the young­ sters through European pro­ grammes and activities.

Councillor Rebeca Pérez commented: “The Language Club makes it possible for the young people of the municipality to be interest­ ed in speaking other lan­ guages, to practise conver­ sation, and thus, complement the language skills they acquire in their schools.”

The Language Clubs this year, due to coronavirus concerns, have provided a local business with some much­needed work, with an extra addition being of­ fered to the students this year.

In a positive move from Murcia City Council, each student will wear double­ sided cotton fabric masks

with filters which are made by a local social clothing workshop that promotes the social and labour inser­ tion of women, through the enhancement of textile waste.

The social clothing work­ shop work under criteria of sustainability and solidari­ ty, betting on a circular economy model that takes into account working condi­ tions and respect for the environment.

DANA Scam Arrests Murcia Turns Pink AN attempted DANA aid scam resulted in four people being arrested as they tried to defraud €250,000 from the Insurance Compensation Consortium.

Alicante Guardia Civil detained three men aged between 22 and 60 and a 58­year­old woman who submitted the large claim after the storm allegedly meant they lost 200,000 kilo­ grams of merchandise (including lemons and potatoes), 3,000 wooden boxes and a thousand pallets, which were stored in­ side its company warehouse.

Following a meticulous study of the documentation, it was concluded that there was no fruit and vegetable products, nor boxes or pallets supposedly damaged.

The alleged victims had falsified estimates, invoices and de­ livery notes with no evidence of merchandise exchanges ever taking place and subsequently the four people were arrested for the attempted DANA aid scam.

They were all convicted of their crimes to defraud.

Jihadist in Alicante

AN Egyptian man accused of creating a Jihadist base in Al­ icante could be set to serve nine years in prison.

The Prosecutor’s Office asked that the accused man, Hesham FMS, be sentenced to nine years in prison when the trial began against the alleged Jihad terrorist on Monday October 19.

According to investiga­ tions and intel gathered, the prosecutor believes the man “would have created a [Ji­ hadist base] in Alicante from where he extended a radical Islamic ideology and served as a refuge, place of transit, base of operations and logis­ tical provisioning for re­ turned Islamic State radicals

MURCIA turned the town pink to highlight and raise awareness for International Breast Cancer Day. The facade of the Moneo Building, the riverbed, the Al­ mudí Palace, and the pedes­ trian axis of the Gran Vía Al­ fonso X El Sabio were dyed Breast Cancer Day. and illuminated pink to cele­ brate the significant world­ wide event: International Breast Cancer Day on October 19.

A meeting was held at the Moneo Building at 8.30pm during which the Department of Social and Family Rights led by Pilar Torres read a manifesto of support for women suffering from this disease, promoted by the Spanish Breast Cancer Federa­ tion.

In Spain, more than 33,000 cases of breast cancer are diag­ nosed each year.

The event was a collaborative initiative with Asociación Ami­ ga, whose main task is to support women who suffer from breast cancer, as well as to contribute to the prevention of the disease or its early detection.

Following the meeting, both parties agreed the car park of The Round was the best choice as it allows for extra possibilities for ex­ panding stall positions, has better parking areas, includes four en­ trances and exits and has the potential for better connectivity with customers.

The City Council, who have shown their commitment to ex­ panding the market, will be communicating the results of the meeting to the 120 vendors who are due to set up their stalls at the weekly market.

Endless Lockdown WELSHMAN Rhys James was teaching English in Italy when he had to go into quarantine and was eventually allowed back to Wales just to go straight back into lockdown again!

Rhys James, 23, from Pem­ broke Dock, was stuck in Italy for eight weeks as he kept testing positive for coron­ avirus. James and his two friends were teaching English in Florence before they tested positive for coronavirus on Au­ gust 17. After the positive tests, they were taken from the hospital to a coronavirus quarantine centre where they were then separated.

Rhys returned to the UK af­ ter eight weeks in complete coronavirus isolation in Italy only to be put straight into lockdown on arrival.

Redford Devastated

ACTOR and director Robert Redford is said to be ‘devas­ tated’ over the death of his son James Redford who has died aged 58 from liver can­ cer.

The news was confirmed by James’ wife, Kyle Redford, on Twitter. “Jamie died today.

We’re heartbroken,” she wrote on Friday. “He lived a beautiful, impactful life and was loved by many. He will be deeply missed.”

James had struggled with liver disease in the past after cancer was discovered in his bile duct last November and he was waiting for a liver transplant. A spokesperson for Robert Redford, 84, told People magazine that he'’s “mourning with his family during this difficult time and asks for privacy.”

Assaulted Rabbi A 14­YEAR­OLD teenage boy has been charged with a hate crime after punching a Rabbi in the face.

Rabbi Yonatan Halevy, 31, said he was walking with his father when the teen allegedly assaulted him last week in San Diego, California.

The teen, who cannot be named due to his age, was charged on Friday, October 16, for battery and hate crime charges, ac­ cording to the San Diego Union­Tribune.

Halevy told police the teen rode past him on his bike and hit him so hard, he was knocked to the ground during the incident on October 10.

He said the boy shouted racial slurs at the pair and screamed ‘white power’ before he cycled off.

Ten years on, a Madrid criminal court found 131 Madrid­Barajas controllers guilty of ‘abandoning a public post’ just as Spain prepared for December’s two public holidays on December 6 and 8.

Protesting about changes in their working condi­ tions, the air controllers went on an unofficial strike resulting in 5,000 cancelled flights affecting 700,000 travellers.

Spain’s then­president Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero solved the problem by declaring a State of Emergency and bringing in the army to supervise the control tow­ ers and centre.

SPAIN’S army wants to ‘decongest’ the Madrid Community where 30 per cent of its soldiers are stationed.

It hopes to relocate them to underpopulated areas of Spain and has already moved the Castillejos Division’s HQ to Huesca.

At present the army owns 236 properties classed as ‘unnecessary.’ Of these, 140 are located in urban areas, often in the centre of big cities, and their sale could finance relocating to other parts of Spain.

“These barracks cannot be sold until they are empty and they won’t be empty until their occupants have moved,” the same sources said. “It’s a vicious circle.”

Queen’s Pardon

THE Queen has pardoned a murderer who risked his life to save members of the public in the London Bridge attack.

Steven Gallant, 42, became a national hero after risking his own life during the London Bridge attacks in November 2019.

Gallant had been on day release from jail

when he risked his life to confront attacker, Usman Khan.

The Queen’s decision to pardon someone of a murder conviction is extraordinary and unprecedented. This means that Gallant will now have a total of 10 months removed from his 17-year sentence which commenced in 2005.

Party Bust LOCAL POLICE in Malaga broke up a party on Sun­ day afternoon (October 18) where they found around 150 people jiving away to a DJ! The venue, located in Malaga, was not a licensed music premises and was only allowed to serve food.

Six patrol cars together with a police canine unit at­ tended the ‘bust’ and were surprised to see so many people without a mask and not observing any social distancing whatsoever.

The ‘revellers’ all had their details taken by police along with the owner of the venue. A full report has been made and sent to the department of prosecutors in Malaga to decide what fines and penalties will be applied­ which are bound to be in the thousands of euros.

Alarming Stats Borat’s IN figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), it shows how much of an affect Covid­19 is having on health services across the country, with deaths from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease rising by 79 per cent in private homes in England during the pandemic compared with the five­year av­ erage.

The figures show that the leading cause of death in private homes during Covid­19 was ischaemic heart disease.

Sarah Caul, the ONS’ head of mortality analysis, said, “While deaths in hospitals and care homes have dropped below the five­ year average since the initial peak of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve consistently seen deaths in private homes remain well above the five­year average.”

Spanish officials reported that a 22­year­old British man became violent and spat at police after they asked him five times to put on a face mask.

Uranium To Go THE PSOE and Unidas Podemos (UP) coalition that governs Spain intend to ban the mining of urani­ um and other radioactive minerals.

Should the veto go through this would curtail the projects of mining companies like Berkeley En­ ergy which have had Spain, and more specifically Salamanca, in their sights for decades.

SCIENTISTS in the Philippines claim that coconut oil can be used to destroy coronavirus.

The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) studied the effects of co­ conut oil on Covid­19 for months in the experi­ mental phase and clinical trials with 56 patients have already begun.

Now the scientist claim that the oil may help de­ stroy the virus, and so it can be useful as an antivi­ ral drug against the disease.

The Philippines is the world’s second largest producer of coconut oil, with 15.3 million tonnes per year. It contributes 26.6 per cent of the world’s production.

Religious Vandals A VANDAL has been caught on camera trying to tear a cross off the roof of an East London church.

Videos released online sparked outrage as footage showed the moment the man succeeds in ripping the cross from the roof of the Chadwell Heath Baptist Church in Romford.

The Metropolitan Police reported that it was called to the church on High Road at 2.40pm on Sunday. The man was arrested at the

scene on suspicion of criminal damage.

A spokesman for the force said the cross was recovered and the man remains in police custody.

Unreachable Goal NINETEEN students in Valladolid face fines for forming a human tower in Plaza de Santa Cruz.

They had intended to reach the bell on the facade of the Santa Cruz palace that is located there and also houses the officers of the Vice­ Chancellor of the Valladolid University.

Whether or not they would have reached it is unknown, as the Local Police caught the group red­handed at 2am as they formed one of the human towers that are more frequent in the Valencian Community and Catalonia than Castilla­Leon.

All were fined for failing to wear face masks and respect social dis­ tancing regulations, while two more face an additional charge of failure to obey authority after they ignored the officers’ orders to stop.

CATALONIA’S College of Veteri­ nary Surgeons (CCVC) have no­ ticed that owners are giving the name of Covid to their new pets.

Cori Escoda, the president of the CCVC, revealed that 27 dogs have been registered as Covid in Catalonia and nine cats.

The CCVC attributes the choice of name to the fact that the Covid­19 pandemic has now become a reality for the Catalan population, Escoda told the La Vanguardia news­ paper.

Not that Covid is the most popular name for Catalonia’s pets, as the favourite name for a dog is Lluna or Luna (Moon) which has been chosen by 32,558 owners, followed by Ki­ ra (20,962) and Nina (12,620).

Curve Flattening A REPORT presented on Thursday, October 15, by Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Min­ istry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts (CCAES), indicates that the second wave may be on the decline.

Presenting the findings of the report at a press conference, Simón said that the second wave is

‘probably’ starting to stabilise in Spain. He did warn, however, that the curve could start to rise again.

Although the numbers of infections are still ris­ ing, they are doing so at a slower pace, according to the report. According to Simón, this week saw 60,000 new cases in Spain, while last week the number of new infections was 68,000.

Letty McMaster, 26, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, was only 18 years old when a month­ long trip volunteering at an or­ phanage in Africa changed her life.

She ended up staying for

three years to support the chil­ dren she had met, and when the orphanage shut down, Let­ ty took in nine youngsters who would have been left homeless.

Seven years later, she lives with the children after becom­ ing legal guardian to them all, as well as five more kids she met on the streets or at a safe house she runs.

Mark Evans, 56, called the cops on his neighbour, Keeley Fry, to complain that she was playing her music too loudly.

THE body of a man was pulled from the sea in the Malaga town of Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol, on Saturday, October 10.

Emergency services were called to El Bajondillo beach where they found the body of the victim floating about 50 metres from the shore.

Members of the Guardia Civil, Maritime Rescue, National Police, Local Police and paramedics attended the scene.

The body was then taken to Puerto Marina by a Sea Rescue boat.

The man, aged around 30, was initially thought to have drowned, but it appears he had suffered several blows to the face, with injuries on his chin, eyes and nose. Official sources said the body had the ap­ pearance of having been in the sea for several days.

The 40­year­old Lebanese doc­ tor received the maximum score in the test for applicants of citizen­ ship, but was denied at the final stage of the process after he failed to shake the hand of the woman responsible for processing the documents.

Lorry gang busted

EIGHT people have been ar­ rested, who are allegedly be­ hind 15 crimes of breaking in­ to lorries parked at rest areas in towns across Spain and stealing goods valued at €500,000.

The investigation started af­ ter the Guardia Civil received calls concerning the unusual movements of a vehicle in the town of Camarena.

Simultaneously, the Madrid Municipal Police contacted the officers because they

were also investigating similar thefts, so it was agreed that a joint enquiry would be sensi­ ble.

It transpired one member of the gang would undertake surveil­ lance while the others parked one of the two vehicles they used to transport the stolen items, along with other vehicles so as not to arouse suspicion.

This is an ongoing investiga­ tion but so far goods to the value of €150,000 have been recovered.

THE survival rate of intensive care patients is improving, new data shows.

A new report from the Inten­ sive Care National Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC), which looks at patients admit­ ted to the ICU in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, show that coronavirus patients have a better survival rate now than when the pandemic first began.

The report shows that the number of patients who died af­ ter being in intensive care fell by almost a quarter since the peak of the pandemic. Furthermore,

the data shows that while 39 per cent of critical care patients died before the end of August, this figure fell to less than 12 per cent since September.

CHEMICAL filled water canons were used on thousands of protestors who took to the streets in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, October 17, in a united call for the release of a number of activists who were recently arrested for ‘violence against the Queen.’

The protests are part of ongoing youth-led anti-monarchy sentiment which is continuing to boil over in the country.

Despite the Prime Minister, Prayut Chn-OChan, having implemented a national state of emergency, protesters defied the government order and held a second subsequent night of protests.

Several hundred riot police confronted the 2,000 strong group of protestors, firing water cannons filled with chemicals at the crowd in efforts to disperse them from the city’s main shopping district.

Settlement THE family of a civilian contractor who was accidentally killed by a trainee F-16 pilot has been awarded an undisclosed settlement.

The F-16 pilot, along with his instructor, were undertaking his first night-time live fire exercise when they both mistook the observation area for the target. The unnamed pilot shot Charles Holbrook, 53, through the head with a 20mm round. Mr Holbrook was rushed to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Centre in Alamogordo, New Mexico but later died.

Mr Holbrook’s wife filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of herself and their 14-yearold daughter. A settlement has now been awarded for an undisclosed amount by the United States Magistrate on Wednesday, October 14.

LOCAL POLICE in Andalucia have started to check up on people who are supposed to be self­isolating at home.

The Ministry of Health wants to make sure that people who have tested positive for Covid­19 are sticking to the quarantine rules. The Local Police have now been handed control with penalties reaching €60,000.

To try to avoid these breaches, the Min­ istry of Health and Families of the Junta de Andalucia and the Andalucian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) have reinforced the measures so that these quarantines are strictly followed.

Nuclear Sea CONTROVERSY mounts as Japan are considering releasing the treated radioactive water from the destroyed nuclear plant Fukushima into the sea.

The debate has been going on for several years with the Japanese government and environmen­ talists on how to dispose of the liquid in which some of the water was used to cool the power station.

As anger mounts from environment and fish­ ing groups who are concerned about the effects this would have on the ocean, scientists argue that the filtered water would be diluted 40 times before being released and any risk to the environ­ ment would be extremely low.

NHS Air THE UK Space Agency has today backed a healthcare drone start­up founded by NHS staff, to help in the response to Covid­19.

The pandemic has seen the country pulling to­ gether, with organisations across the space sector stepping forward to help.

Apian, part of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Pro­ gramme, aims to establish a network of secure air corridors for electric drones to navigate via satellite­ enabled GPS. Each drone will be able to carry Covid­19 samples, test­kits and PPE. This will avoid courier call­out wait­ ing times, free­up NHS staff, reduce unnecessary physical contact and minimise the risk of secondary transmission of the virus.

New Record A MOUNTAINEER has set a new record days af­ ter recovering from Covid­19. The inexperienced mountaineer, Akke Rahman, from Oldham set the record for climbing the mountain in Russia in just 24 hours, after recovering from coron­ avirus just five days prior to the climb.

Usually the hike to the top takes a few days, although he had to do it faster than usual as he only had three days on his travelling visa.

He said that his accomplishment had not yet sunk in and is still in shock about his record.

Bad Jobs at Risk Beer AN industry watchdog has fined Heineken’s pub business £2m for forcing pubs to sell ‘un­ reasonable levels’ of its own beers and ciders.

The major beer brand runs Star Pubs and Bars, and according to the Pubs Code Adju­ dicator (PCA), it ‘seri­ ously and repeatedly’ broke rules for three years after receiving complaints from sever­ al pubs that were pres­ sured into selling Heineken brands ­ which includes Amstel, Birra Moretti and Bul­ mers cider.

Star Pubs includes 2,500 pubs of which, 1,900 are covered by the PCA in England and Wales.

PUB group Marston’s have said that new coronavirus restric­ tions announced by the govern­ ment have put 2,150 jobs at risk.

The harsher restrictions en­ forced by the British govern­ ment have been called “hugely disappointing” by Marston’s who state there is a lack of evi­ dence linking pubs to the recent rise in Covid­19 numbers.

“Inevitably, and regrettably, recent restrictions will impact jobs,” the company said,

Lloyds Staff Cuts LLOYDS Banking Group announced more jobs cuts on Thursday October 15, with 125 office staff being readied to be let go.

The company which employs a total of 65,000 people, across its Bank of Scotland, Halifax and Lloyds brands, is however ex­ pected to create around 62 new roles, meaning a net loss of 63 employees.

According to Accord, which is one of its staff unions, the group’s internal audit team and retail chief operating office are likely to be most affected.

This latest announcement from the group regarding more job cuts comes after they announced in September 2020 that it was preparing plans to simplify parts of its business.

Murder Hornets SCIENTISTS in Washington, US, have used dental floss to attach a tracking device to a female Asian giant hornet.

The female Asian giant hor­ net was caught on Thursday, October 15, and was fed strawberry jam, once the tracking device was attached, she was let out two days later.

Last year was the first time the hornets were seen, and 18 have been found since. Entomologists have tried attaching a radio to the hornet; however, the glue didn’t dry in time and fell off of the hornet. These ‘murder hornets’ can be life­threaten­ ing; their stings are im­ mensely powerful.

Spend time in Spain or have a Spanish holiday home?

What 2021 means for your freedom of movement When the Brexit transition period officially ends on 31 December, UK nationals lose the automatic right to come and go in Spain that has been in place for 48 years.

From 1 January, only those who have already established lawful Spanish residence or EU citizenship will have unlimited access to the country.

So if you spend a lot of time in Spain but intend to remain UK resident, things are about to become much more complicated.

While we remain confident that Spain will continue to welcome UK visitors, as no-one knows what the new immigration requirements will be, we can only speculate based on existing rules for nonEU/EEA (‘third country’) nationals.

The 90-days in 180-days rule Unless there is an alternative UK/Spain agreement, from 2021, non-Spanish resident UK citizens will be limited to visiting Spain for

You don’t need to be physically present in Spain when the transition ends, but you do have to submit your application in person, where possible. While you actually have until 30 June 2021 to apply, you must be able to demonstrate that you were settled before 31 December 2020. What constitutes “proof” here could be open to interpretation, so it is risky to delay starting the application process. As well as gathering as much evidence as you can, you also need to ensure you meet the residence requirements by not spending too much time in the UK. Note that in becoming Spanish resident, you will likely also be deemed tax resident in Spain, so take care to meet your obligations here. £20m Fine Cash Buns BRITISH AIRWAYS have been fined £20 million by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) over data breach which affected more than 400,000 customers.

Following an investigation lasting almost two years, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) concluded that British Airways did not have sufficient security measures in place to process such a significant amount of personal data.

In a statement, the ICO said, “People entrusted their personal details to BA and BA failed to take adequate measures to keep those details secure.”

BRAZILIAN senator, Chico Rodrigues, hid cash between his buttocks during a police raid on his home.

Police raided the home of Rodrigues, who is an ally of Brazil’s far­right president Jair Bol­ sonaro, on Wednesday, October 14, as part of an investigation into misappropriation of public funds during the pandemic. When police searched his house they found the Brazilian senator had hidden cash between his buttocks.

The Estado de São Paulo reported 30,000 reais (€4,500) was concealed in Rodrigues’s un­ derpants, clenched between his buttocks. A lo­ cal magazine, Revista Crusoé reported some of the recovered notes were stained with faeces.

AC/DC FORMER AC/DC bass guitarist Paul Matters has died, announced his friend Rod Wescombe on Facebook.

Rod Wescombe announced the death of the former AC/DC guitarist, Paul Matters, via Facebook on Wednesday, October 14, saying he was “shocked and saddened” to hear of his death.

Matters joined AD/DC in 1975 but lasted only a few short weeks before he was fired by lead singer Bon Scott. He then retired from music completely and led ‘a reclusive life.’

Playing tribute to his friend’s life, Wescombe said on Facebook: “I first met Paul in 1973 when he was playing bass in ‘Armageddon’ at a gig in Hamilton, Newcastle NSW. “I recall he could always make me laugh when he was in the mood.”

THE Spanish government confirmed on Thursday, October 15, that it will increase the IVA on sugary and sweetened drinks from 10 per cent to 21 per cent, to promote healthier habits and lifestyles.

The measure is included in the budget plan that the Executive has sent to Brussels. Taxes are to be imposed on certain behaviours that are harmful to the environment, health or society in general to raise the cost of their consumption.

The measure is part of a new package which the government intends to use to modify the Spanish tax system. “The estimated impact of the set of tax measures and the new Law against Tax Fraud stands at €6,847m in 2021 and €2,323m in 2022 on a cash basis,” explained the government.

Huge Gesture A GROUP of friends hired a crane to surprise a cancer pa­ tient in hospital.

The women rented the crane to visit a friend with can­ cer who has been in a hospital in Argentina for two months.

The coronavirus pandemic has meant visits to Gabriela, 52, have been restricted, and although her friends stay in touch through video calls, the women wanted to do some­ thing special.

They had the crane placed underneath her bedroom window at the Fleming Hospi­ tal, and surprised Gabriele with an ‘injection of encour­ agement’ to continue her fight against cancer during the health crisis.

The 12 women, who were carrying balloons and ban­ ners, have all been friends for more than 10 years, having met through a running group from La Plata.

The Queen

THE Queen carried out first public en­ gagement since the start of the pan­ demic after leaving the royal grounds to visit the Defence Science and Tech­ nology Laboratory.

Accompanied by grandson Prince William, the pair, who were not wear­ ing face masks, visited the lab in Porton Down near Salisbury, to officially open the new Energetics Analysis Centre.

Two and a half million new 50p coins were due to be put into circulation on Monday, October 19. Beacon of Hope AN eight­year­old boy has been called a “beacon of hope” for people at risk of blindness after receiving cutting­edge gene replacement therapy.

The boy is the first ever Canadian to receive this ingenious new thera­ py for his rare form of blindness which left the boy, Sam, unable to make out shapes in the dark, seeing the sky on a cloudy day, and had trouble making out his shoes.

It was a very worrying time for Sam and his family as his condition was progressive and would only get worse as he got older but there was no known treatment for it.

Thanks to this ingenious new treatment the boy’s sight has improved tenfold.

Access Denied A NEW face­covering detection technology, first used in White­ ley’s Garden Centre in Mirfield, West Yorkshire to detect if shop­ pers were wearing a face mask, is now being rolled out across re­ tail stores in the UK. The tech­ nology involves cameras being fitted at the entrance to stores that are able to detect whether a person is wearing a covering over their mouth or nose.

If the system detects a shop­ per is not wearing a face mask, a red message flashes onto a screen and they are denied ac­ cess.

It means shops installing the software no longer have to man­ ually staff the door and workers can avoid altercations with non­ compliant customers ­ a regular occurrence apparently.

Easy Trace POLICE in the UK have been granted access to details of peo­ ple told to self­isolate by the Test and Trace system.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has con­ firmed it had “agreed on a mem­ orandum of understanding with the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC)” to provide forces with the information on a “case­by­ case basis.”

In a statement, the DHSC said: “It is a legal requirement for peo­ ple who have tested positive for Covid­19 and their close con­ tacts to self­isolate when formal­ ly notified to do so.”

Police can issue fines starting at £1,000 for first offences, which can scale up to £10,000 for re­ peat offences and serious breaches of the law.

Hitler’s Bar HITLER’S globe­shaped bar is being sold at auction and re­ sembles the globe, which the Führer so desperately wanted to conquer.

Hitler was a dictator of luxury and his personal yacht was home to a stunning globe­ shaped bar. The bar is now go­ ing to auction in the US and is expected to make $250,000 (€215,000).

The ship’s classic onboard drinks bar and matching stools were rescued from Hitler’s 377ft boat prior to be it being sent to the scrap yard.

According to reports the bar was a social hub on the vessel and was used to entertain guests including Benito Mussoli­ ni, Hermann Goering, Joseph Goebbels and Rudolph Hess.

49 Mile Marathon

A WOMAN competing in this year’s virtual London marathon accidently did 49 miles after poor GPS reception meant she travelled nearly double the nor­ mal distance.

Poor Jodey Hopcroft suffered a huge technology failure when her phone app failed to register her miles covered, meaning she had to walk nearly another 26.2 miles in order to officially com­ plete the distance.

The event was held ‘virtually’ for amateurs this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, using the Virgin Money London Marathon app, which was used to track par­ ticipant’s progress.

Government to Blame FLIGHT capacity on Ryanair win­ ter flights have had to be cut from 60 per cent to 40 per cent.

The carrier blamed EU govern­ ments for air travel mismanage­ ment after increased restrictions have caused bookings to drop.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said: “While we deeply regret these winter schedule cuts they have been forced upon us by government mismanagement of EU air trav­ el.”

Operating at a reduced fre­ quency, the schedule for Novem­ ber to March will now see its winter flight schedule operate at 65 per cent of its usual.

#SaveNightclubs Campaign CAMPAIGN group #SaveNightclubs aim to help many UK nightclubs who fear closure due to the pandemic and subsequent restrictions.

The group says they are a nationwide coali­ tion representing over 100 nightclubs and thou­ sands of staff, who are urging the UK govern­ ment to #SaveNightclubs.

According to the group, they are not asking to

Swingers THE world’s rarest ape, the Hainan gibbon, could be saved from extinction by rope bridges.

After a landslide divided their territory on the South Chinese island of Hainan, the already endangered gibbon is at new risk of extinction as its feeding and breeding ground has been severely limited. But experts say that building rope bridges across two areas of their forest could allow them to expand their territory.

Since these gibbons are exclusively treedwellers, they cannot hope to cross the damaged forest floor without help.

Rope bridges could also be used to connect habitats in other areas, experts say, expanding the territory of the endangered gibbons even further.

A BERLIN court has overturned bar clo­ sures and deems it was a ‘dispropor­ tionate’ measure.

On Saturday, October 10, Berlin city au­ thorities ordered bars and restaurants to close from 11pm to 6am as infection numbers continued to climb. However, a Berlin court has now overturned the bar closures and claims it is a “disproportion­ ate encroachment on freedoms, as the new infections are more likely to stem from family and religious gatherings, trav­ el and community facilities.”

Angel Merkel and the German pre­ miers had agreed to adopt the curfew if the number of new infections passed the threshold of 35 per 100,000 people in seven days. Now Merkel is warning that the country is heading for “disas­ ter.”

Disco Dinner BREAKFAST, lunch or dinner is now being served in nightclubs and bars in Madrid so they can reopen.

Discotheques, dance halls and cocktail bars, with prior licences, can already serve meals on their premises. 4G is coming … to the Moon, but it’s not just all for Facebook and Insta­ gram likes.

Nokia has won a $14.1m (€12m) funding contract from the US space agency to develop and build a 4G network across the moon.

The new contract is part of a massive $370m (€315m) range of con­ tracts that were issued on Wednesday, October 14.

The contracts have been issued as part of Nasa’s renewed push to return to the moon in 2024.

Nasa said, “The system could support lunar sur­ face communications at greater distances, in­ creased speeds, and pro­ vide more reliability than current standards.”

The installation of the network could also help in the development of a permanent future base on the moon.

KURT looks and acts like any other young horse, however, Kurt is no ordinary horse. He is a clone.

The two­month­old colt is a Przewalski’s horse, a species native to central Asia that once went extinct in the wild and is still critically endan­ gered, with only about 2,000 remaining.

In the middle of his route, he ran into four puma cubs, a beautiful experi­ ence until the mother of the cubs appeared and chased him for six minutes during which the runner ‘feared for his life.’ The protective mother of the cubs literally stalked Kyle, who recorded everything with his camera. Thankfully, Kyle managed to emerge from his terrifying episode unharmed and has since shared his footage.

Illegal Batman THE latest Batman movie, starring British actors Robert Pattinson and Colin Farrell, is still being filmed in Liverpool despite the latest restrictions recently announced.

The Merseyside city has been turned into the famous streets of Gotham despite the real-life Tier Three restrictions being put into place by the government due to the high number of Covid-19 cases in the area.

The newest incarnation of the Batman character is being played by actor Robert Pattinson, who may have surprised the residents of Liverpool with his appearance on the set of the movie, with many of them facing harsher Covid-19 restrictions.

€9 billion WTO rules on import tariffs

IT is certainly tit for tat in the battle between the European Union and the USA over support for their aircraft manufac­ turers with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) acting in the mid­ dle as each complains about the other.

Put succinctly, both countries submitted complaints to the WTO on October 6, 2004 with the USA complaining that Airbus in France,

The EU complained in turn that Washington State had offered tax breaks to Boeing so that they would attract the company to produce wings for the 777 and this ran until 2019 when it was withdrawn at the Boeing’s request.

A COMBINED operation be­ tween the Guardia Civil, Na­ tional Police and Spanish Tax Agency saw raids at three ille­ gal cigarette factories and the seizure of 43 tons of tobacco, almost 1.5 million packs of cig­ arettes and large amounts of machinery.

The factories which were based in Madrid, Murcia and Alicante were controlled by a Bulgarian gang and the value of the material recovered by this action is said to be €9 mil­ lion with 14 different brands of cigarette being counterfeit­ ed.

A total of 38 different peo­ ple of various nationalities in­

cluding several Ukrainians were arrested during this op­ eration and apart from ma­ chinery capable of producing 189,000 cigarettes a minute, officers also discovered a number of lorries already loaded with cartons ready to be distributed throughout Spain and much of Europe.

Four of the fake cigarette brands being produced, Fortu­ na, Winston, L & M and Chesterfield are particularly popular in Spain and the Tax Agency will have lost huge amounts of VAT and duty from their sale as will the manufacturers of the origi­ nals.

The Spanish poverty level is based on the number of households that take home less than 60 per cent of the av­ erage annual income and Spain at 20.7 per cent comes after Romania, Latvia, Bulgaria and Estonia, but for poor chil­ dren only Romania and Bul­ garia have more. vived until the winter.

Although BA has been hit with the highest fine ever issued by the UK Information Commissioner’s Of­ fice (ICO), shareholders and compa­ ny executives are breathing a sigh of relief as it was originally believed that the fine for the breach of secu­ rity in 2018 (with 400,000 passenger details lost) would be in the region of £183 million (€200 million).

Spain worried about delay

SPAIN’S Minister for the Econo­ my Nadia María Calviño has in­ dicated that discussions are still taking place concerning dis­ bursement of the European Union’s coronavirus recovery fund, of which Spain is one of the largest potential recipients.

The problem appears to be with regards to control and over­ sight of the use of the funds which were supposed to be dis­ tributed early in the New Year in order to help kickstart members economies.

Speaking to American Bloomberg TV the minister said “We are doing our utmost to ac­ celerate this process so that we can start the implementation of the recovery plan on January 1, 2021.”

She was very upbeat in her

view of the Spanish economy go­ ing forward and suggested that market confidence in Spain is strong and that the ruling minori­ ty government would shortly be able to finalise the 2021 budget which would incorporate dis­ bursement of the European Union funds.

In the meantime, the Euro­ pean Central Bank is buying up Government Bonds and this not only allows countries like Spain to reduce its borrowing from more expensive sources, but means that it is able to reduce its bor­ rowing forecast by almost €15 billion during 2020.

OUTBREAK ‘Us and them’ I’m afraid

A QUARTER of ‘a rule­breaking’ crew on a £3 billion nuclear sub tested positive for Covid after booze sessions.

Sailors on the HMS Vigilant were under strict orders not to leave the Kings Bay US Navy base in Georgia, US, but reportedly broke the rules and went to bars, restaurants and strip clubs.

Now, at least 35 crew have tested positive for Covid­19, including a doctor and executive officer ­ said to be one of just two people with codes to fire nuclear weapons.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NEVER has my constant harping about legal aid lawyer fees been more justified than by the events that took place just recently. Nineteen out of 20 illegal immigrants, who, after months of wrangling, were finally being deported, became prevented from leaving, after last minute actions by their lawyers gained them a stay of ‘execution.’

Ultimately, only one finally flew off into the great blue good riddance. Once again the so called ‘activist’ lawyers, managed to retain a lucrative number of customers for their dubious companies, allowing them, under the umbrella of the ridiculous ’uman rights regulations, to bleed the British taxpayer even further.

The amount this modern day, second rate bunch of shylocks is coining in is really quite frightening. I tried a little research and found that their fees begin at something like £100 an hour.

Assuming they spend five hours a day on a case and multiply that by the 19 illegals they managed to hold back, then this batch alone can bring in some £9,500 a DAY. Multiply that by the amount of weeks or months it takes to resolve these cases and you begin to get some idea of the money these individuals are gleefully conning out of the public purse. And these 19 are only one example.

There are literally hundreds of other cases we never even get to hear about.

One assessment I came across, was that lawyers who specialise in immigrant cases are costing the tax payer around £100 million a year! Personally I think that is probably a conservative figure and in reality it is much higher.

You can rest assured than none of these sharks have any moral or patriotic obligations to the British public. They are simply hell bent on screwing the tax payer out of all they can get.

Remember also, these were the same low lifes who went knocking on doors in the Middle East, in an attempt to inveigle the citizens in war areas to lodge complaints against British soldiers

so their companies could begin legal actions against our brave men and women in the military.

They are the lowest of the low and need hitting where it will really hurt, right in their grubby money grabbing wallets. Their fees, particularly where it involves illegal immigrants, must be capped and capped pretty low at that.

If they really do have consciences and truly do care about these people, let ‘em take on a few cases pro bono. Ha! You’ve more chance of having a foxtrot with our dear Queen Elizabeth in Harrods’ window than seeing that particular scenario. Personally I can’t see why the government doesn’t take some action against this very obvious, wholly unacceptable extortion racket.

Unless of course the bosses are all members of the same old boys’ club; which is a far more likely scenario. ‘Us and them’ once again I’m afraid.

Always has been and, until the ‘revolution,’ always will be.

Be prepared to be repeatedly questioned how long until lunchtime. This should begin around 9.15 and continue about every 15 minutes until lunchtime. If you work with children under five, remember that if you didn’t photo­ graph it and write about it, it never happened.

It is normal for children to re­ peatedly blurt out any answer and keep guessing until they see the ap­ propriate reaction on your face.

What is three plus four? “Nine, f i v e , z e r o , 8 0 ? ” Ke e p c a l m a n d don’t yell, no matter how many times it happens.

SHOULD I stay or should I go now? Many expats in Spain are facing the tough question of whether to stick it out in Spain or move back home.

People from around the globe flock to Spain every year for the promise of eternal sunshine and an idyllic lifestyle.

Many were lured here by the golden beaches, chilled Spanish outlook of ‘mañana’ and a desire to escape the humdrum, 9-5 of the UK and Ireland. In this respect, Spain has certainly lived up to her side of the bargain; however, in the current climate, what would be the final straw to push us to return home?

It’s no secret that so many people are struggling to make ends meet. Hopes of a late summer tourist trade extending into autumn have been obliterated with Spain failing to meet requirements for green lists, and a long, quiet winter season is stretching ahead of us.

Sure, expats still need to work hard, and bureaucracy is bureaucracy wherever you live. But would expats choose to swap tapas for the tube or beaches for Boris? Not a chance, think many will still stay.

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I NEARLY didn’t do a column this week and in fact I’m finding them harder and harder to do. Not because I’m not grumpy, because I am, but I seem to be grumpy about the same things all the time. Things like trying to pay cash into the bank or trying to use the voucher that the supermarket sent you but you are one day early or one day late.

Spanish law where you can’t get rid of a useless community gardener that is a lunatic with a chainsaw that just hacks at everything and the company that he works for is just as bad. So you termi­ nate their contract only to find out that the new company has to employ the same gardener as the old one didn’t have a garden for him to mutilate.

So, are you ready for this, he takes the new company to court and wins!!!

Absolute lunacy.

But what really is getting at me at the moment are ‘experts.’ Not experts with degrees and PhDs who work out of lab­ oratories and secret bunkers with direct data, but the ones sitting in their arm­

chairs and know everything about everything. l don’t mean the ones that have a slightly different point of view.

I’m talking about the ones that ex­ plain why we are all mugs and this is the truth. And how do they know that?

Well because they read or watched something different to what I read or watched and decided that what they read is right and that’s it. They’re actu­ ally very condescending.

It looks like I’ve lost my bet that Trump would last four years. My loss but Cudeca’s gain. I’ve lost a few bets in my time but this one just astounds me because never in my lifetime have I seen and heard directly from people in­ volved with him say what a piece of work he is. Anyone want a bet if he will do another four years? Hopefully it will be in prison. Lock him up!!

This week Celebrity Chef & Master Chef Steven Saunders, proprietor of the award-winning Little Geranium in La Cala makes a mess in the kitchen with Meringue!

Steven Saunders FMCGB The Little Geranium La Cala de Mijas www.thelittlegeranium.com ETON MESS is a traditional Eng­ lish dessert dating back to the late 1800s originating from Eton college. It was served at the Eton school’s annual cricket matches and became famous when the English people dis­ covered that they loved meringue, cream and fresh fruits.

Everything related to the dish encapsulated the English summer. Whipped fresh cream, English strawberries, raspberries and blueberries were often added, usually served up with tennis or crick­ et.

Now chefs love evolving recipes, but you have to be careful. Careful because some classics should be just left alone. Heston Blumenthal said that he couldn’t and wouldn’t change Eton Mess and conclud­ ed that although it looks messy that is where the tradition lies.

Steven and Michel making meringues at home. ways right. Mushed up fruit and meringue served in a glass is not very 21st century. I saw this as a challenge and so I went into my home kitchen and started messing about

with meringues.

I tried many different ways of serving them with cream and summer fruits to make them more attractive but keep­ ing the thread of the dish. Then

I remembered my days at The Savoy in London where I had spent my training and I used to pipe little blobs of meringue for a dish they served in a martini glass with fruits.

On one occasion I had piped over a thousand little blobs for the Queen Mother’s birthday party and it came to mind when I was holding the piping bag filled with the meringue mix.

So, I piped a tray of tiny meringue blobs and also a spread meringue (like spread­ ing butter) so that I could have little crisps of meringue. The two different types would add textures. I cooked them really slowly at 100ºC for about one hour.

When I felt them, they were hard on the outside as they should be but soft in the cen­ tre. The spread meringue will be crisp all the way through.

Then I went to work on laying out the dish on the plate.

The dish I created looked quite beautiful but still simple and when served to the guests, it really has the wow factor!

I sent an Instagram mes­ sage and photo of the new

Eton Mess to Heston with the picture but he didn’t respond.

In fact, out of the 26,000 fol­ lowers he has, he follows just none! Heston does not fol­ low anyone so hence he would never have seen my creation!

If you want to be really cre­ ative you can get even more ‘Hestony’ by serving the plate under a glass dome with liquid nitrogen (dry ice) which we have often done at the Gerani­ um.

I hope that I have helped evolve and improve the ap­ pearance of this classic but not change the flavours or the tex­ tures of the original dish.

We are getting to see the last of the summer fruits now so if you want to make some­ thing really special with them then have a go at this recipe and impress your guests with your cooking and presentation skills.

Ingredients for Meringue (recipe below makes about eight portions) 160g of egg white 160g of caster sugar 160g of icing sugar Method for Meringues Preheat the oven to 100°C or lowest gas mark setting Whisk the egg whites until very stiff then gradually add the caster sugar. Beat until in­ corporated, then finally add the icing sugar and whisk un­ til combined.

Put in a piping bag and pipe into small 2cm domes onto a baking tray lined with parch­ ment paper or a silicone bak­ ing mat which makes life a lot easier!

Also pipe one large blob and spread thinly with a palette knife to create a sheet of meringue about ¼ cm thick.

Place the meringues in the oven for one hour and then check them, the outer shell should be firm.

For the raspberry sauce (coulis) 1 punnet raspberries 150g sugar/100ml of water in saucepan until sugar dissolves and becomes a little syrupy) Method for raspberry sauce Cook the raspberries in the sugar syrup until they break down and then blend in a

food processor.

Finally pass through a fine sieve to remove the seeds For the meringue crisps Take the sheet of cooked meringue and break with your fingers into small 2cm pieces. Reserve.

To dress the meringues 1 punnet of raspberries 1 punnet blueberries 1 punnet strawberries 250ml of fresh thick cream, lightly whipped 1 tablespoon of the raspberry sauce (above) To assemble the dessert Follow the picture in the arti­

cle and try to get it straight, neat and tidy.

Pipe little blobs of raspberry sauce (coulis) either in small piping bag or make a paper one from parchment/baking paper.

Pipe blobs of fresh cream then add the domes of meringue followed by the fruits and finally the meringue crisps.

Garnish and dress with the raspberry coulis.

Note: You can freeze some raspberries and then lightly crush them and sprinkle over the dessert to finish.

SCUM-BAGS AND TOE-RAGS Joint Forces DAVID WORBOYS C O N T R I B U T O R S to the ‘popular’ newspapers and Twitter tend to dis­ miss people they don’t relate to, or whose opinions they don’t share, in the most aggressive language. If the victims are fortunate, they may get away with being described as morons or idiots. At worst they are scum bags or toe rags.

Celebrities such as politicians, TV presenters, pop singers, footballers and royalty are constantly picked up­ on by invisible commentators armed with a pen ­ or a keyboard. From Jere­ my Corbyn and Bob Geldof to Wayne Rooney and Prince Harry, they have been mocked or viciously attacked.

Popular female targets range from Diane Abbott and Kim Kardashian to Meghan Markle, Victoria Beckham and Nicola Sturgeon ­ all decent, harmless people with their own ways of doing things.

Although it’s not easy to feel sym­ pathy for people who are self­centred

or palpably evil, I don’t find these terms appropriate even for such peo­ ple in our society.

Donald Trump may be a thoroughly unpleasant person, self­absorbed, dishonest and unprincipled. He may preach lies and nonsense about his opponents and may have deeply flawed intelligence and judgement.

But this doesn’t make him a scum bag.

The Sunday Times claims still to be a quality paper and it has some inter­ esting columnists and excellent con­ tributors on subjects such as history, politics and economics.

But, as it seeks to appeal to all lev­ els of taste and education, it also has Camilla Long. I have not met her and can only judge by what she writes, but she comes across as a bitter woman who hates the world around her.

Many of her subjects have granted her an interview in good faith and al­ most all of them are, judging from her text and photographs, more attrac­ tive, more successful ­ and nicer peo­ ple ­ than she is.

She therefore reacts resentfully by tearing them apart in the most hate­

ful way. She mocks their appearance (buck teeth), questions their intelli­ gence (airheads), and sneers at their occupations (clothes horses) for no apparent reason. Furthermore, she writes as if her readership goes along with her diatribes. “As we all know, she hasn’t a clue how to dress.”

Several things alarm me about this.

First is the esteem in which she seems to be held by the readers of this once fine newspaper (under Harold Hob­ son), and second, the fact that she was voted interviewer of the year in 2016 at the British Press awards.

This exemplifies gutter journalism.

To judge from her writing, she regards sex as something dirty. Her favourite words include, ‘bum’, ‘tits’, ‘shag’, ‘cock’ and ‘crap’, terms we used at school. She seems obsessed with body parts and bodily functions, de­ scribed in suitably barrack­room lan­ guage.

What happened to kindness and courtesy? To me this crude intoler­ ance towards the different views and choices, the character and appear­ ance of others suggests she has her own problems.

But she is not a toe rag.

Jail Time A MEXICAN mayor, Freddy Gil has threatened his residents with jail time or community service if they refuse to wear face masks from Friday, October 16, as the city combats the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Anyone dismissing the order will be subject to six hours in jail or could be ordered to do three hours of community service or fined 150 Mexican pesos (€6.00) Gil said that as many as 50 people could be held in custody at any given moment, with cells set to hold as many as 10 rule breakers.

The coastal municipality mayor added that the jails will also be sanitised as a safety measure.

Channelling his inner Dude, the Oscar­winning actor’s tweet read: “I have been diagnosed with Lymphoma. Although it is a serious disease, I feel fortunate that I have a great team of doctors and the prognosis is good.”

OUR VIEW How early is too early to put up your Christmas decorations?

WITH Malaga Christmas lights already being constructed and many UK venues putting up their decorations at the beginning of November, we want to know when you think it is too early to put up your Christmas decorations.

Depending on which side of the fence you fall, Xmas decorations in October may feel sublime or ridiculous.

However, psychoanalysts have researched the differing opinions and discovered that putting up decorations early can actually increase the level of excitement and anticipation for the big day and also can affect positive change in people’s mood and attitude.

If you decided to put up a real tree, then this will dictate when you decorate. The British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) does recommend waiting until at least the beginning of December. If the tree is looked after well then it will last four weeks and see you through until just after New Year.

Tradition does dictate that putting up Christmas decorations, including the tree, should wait until the beginning of the Advent. Advent is the fourth Sunday before Christmas and will fall on Sunday, November 29, this year.

U l t i m a t e l y, w h a t y o u c h o o s e t o d o w i t h y o u r Christmas decorations is up to you. Follow time honoured traditions or make up your own. Provided you are happy, healthy and enjoying the time for family and friends then it’s all good … even if it may be over Zoom this year.

How To Cope Through Difficult Times

ative mindset, it can have an impact on every as­ pect of your life, including, fami­ ly, friendships, relationships and health. Your thought patterns affect your emotions, which in turn, affect your behaviour and actions. For example, if you wake one morning in a bad mood and consistently think of that bad mood, you will feel an­ gry, frustrated, grumpy. This may lead to the actions of shouting at family members, be­ coming impatient with work col­ leagues, whilst mentally beating yourself up over your behaviour.

Depending on the issue that

each individual is dealing with, there are several ways you can approach this and learn how to change your way of thinking and your coping mechanism.

Write Rather Than Think The first step I take with all of my clients is journalling. Write down your current negative thought. What is the situation that has caused this thought?

Do you have any physical evi­ dence that makes this thought true? By writing down your ac­ tual thoughts, help you recog­ nise and name it without judge­ ment. You may even notice that your painful feelings disappear after a while. ‘This too shall pass’ can become words to live by.

You Can’t Control A Person or Situation Outside Of You This is a statement I live by daily. You are only in control of

you! Whilst you cannot control a situation or person outside of you, you can control the emo­ tions that you attach to it. Do not dismiss or ignore your emo­ tion as that will not make the pain go away. Acknowledge the distress and accept it as your present reality. Accepting does not mean you like it, it only means that you can put these unpleasant thoughts to the front and centre of your mind, rather than allowing them to float unconsciously under the surface Be Your Own Best Friend Eighty per cent of our thoughts are negative, we can be really mean to our­ selves. Ask yourself, is that the way you would treat your best friend? Self­love is so important. Everything starts with how you feel

about yourself, so, the next time you punish yourself over a situation you cannot control, ask yourself this im­ portant question. Would I speak to my best friend in the same way?

Do The Things You Love It is a fact that there will be situations in everyone’s life that may cause you difficult times, but, that doesn’t mean you have to allow it to control every as­ pect of your life. When these situations occur, remember to do the things you love and reach for the belief.

Talk out loud if it helps, ‘I love the warmth of the sun on my face,’ ‘reading books makes me feel relaxed,’ ‘I love the smell of fresh coffee,’ these examples will amend your way of thinking and will encourage you to look for the positive.

Study on experimental blood tests RESEARCHERS believe one day an experimental blood test may be able to detect a range of diseases including cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS). The study is still in its early stages but researchers believe it opens up vast possibilities and could offer ‘huge potential,’ however they admit it is still far from clinical use.

So far, the method has been tested on 320 patients and controls, and has shown success in finding diseases such as pancreatic cancer, diabetes, traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis.

Scientists have known for some time that dying cells release fragmented DNA into the circulating blood. When cells die, it can mean a disease is just beginning to take hold, and the researchers are now looking at new methods in which they can use this knowledge to identify diseases from a blood test, detecting cell death in specific tissues.

The technology is based on next-generation DNA sequencing.

Musical Company Making Comeback

THEATRE GROUP: Studio32 are resuming rehearsals for their South Pacific production.

STUDIO32 Musical Theatre company have announced that they are soon set to be resuming rehearsals for their South Pacific production.

Studio32 is a theatre group based in the Benijofar / Los Montesinos region of southern Costa Blanca whose main aim is to have fun, work hard, produce great entertainment, and in the process raise money for local charities and worthy causes.

The announcement that the group is set to rehearse ahead of a proposed show in

March 2021 will come as a welcome relief for participants and fans alike, who have had their year rocked by the coronavirus pandemic.

The company was set up in 2013 and over the years have staged many large scale musicals including: ‘Oklahoma!,’ ‘Fiddler On The Roof,’ ‘Mack and Mabel,’ ‘Chicago’ and ‘Anything Goes.’

The group has raised over €35,000 which has gone to help local Alzheimer support, homeless people, the local music school in San Fulgen-

cio, and more recently the Red Cross; for their tremendous work in helping people affected by the floods in Spain last year.

The musical theatre group hope to start full rehearsals in January 2021 and would welcome new members to join their company.

Church of England Celebration One for the archaeologists

THE Church of England in southern Costa Blanca is celebrating its 20 year anniversary on Saturday, October 24 with a special celebration of the Holy Eucharist at La Siesta Ecumenical Church, Calle Granados at 5pm.

Whilst there had been informal Church of England services before that, it was in 2000 that the Chaplaincy of Ss Peter and Paul, Torrevieja began to serve members of the Church of England (and other English-speaking Christians who wanted to worship in the ethos of the Church of England) living in this part of Spain.

Father Richard A Seabrook S S C is the fourth priest to be the Chaplain: “All over Europe there are congregations of members of the Church of England who worship and serve the Lord and Ss Peter and Paul, Torrevieja is just one of them,” he said.

The Chaplaincy of Ss Peter and Paul, Torrevieja normally gathers at Los Balcones Catholic Church, Lago Jardín Urbanisation Church and La Siesta Ecumenical Church, however, “Los Balcones Church is closed for restoration at the moment and Lago Jardín is too small because of the social-distancing in place,” Father Seabrook commented.

Speaking about the pandemic, Father Seabrook continued: “The pandemic has changed all our lives but the Church of England’s presence here is assured and continuing because of our 20-year-old roots in the southern Costa Blanca. This is our field of faith. Here our work of prayer, worship and

In the Costa Blanca there are only two Church of England Chaplaincies - one north of Alicante and one based in the Torrevieja area. “As the only Church of England presence in the southern Costa Blanca we look forward to welcoming more and more people to join our community - they are assured of a warm welcome,” said Father Seabrook.

AFTER lying untouched for 15 years, excavations will recommence at the archaeological site in Pilar de la Horadada.

This covers an area of 31,000 square metres in the Cañada de Praes district, west of the town centre. Pilar de la Horadada mayor Jose Maria Perez and Culture councillor Dario Quesada recently visited the site which has now been cleared, ready for the experts to step in.

“We want the local population to be able to enjoy our historic past,” they announced.

Digs carried out at Cañada de Praes site in 1999 and again in 2005 indicated the importance of the Romans’ presence in Pilar de la Horadada in the First Century BC. Finds revealed that the site was dedicated to pottery production, owing to the area’s commercial access both to the Via Augusta and shipping.

Cauda equina syndrome is one of the causes of low back pain in dogs THE cauda equina is the tail end of the spinal cord and the adja­ cent nerve roots. Sometimes a narrowing of the spinal canal occurs in the lumbosacral joint, where the spine meets the pelvis (lumbosacral stenosis).

The condition resulting from these compressed spinal nerve roots is called cauda equina syn­ drome. In some cases the foramina (the holes through which the spinal nerves exit) be­ come narrowed and compress the nerves permanently or in­ termittently.

The causes that pro­ voke it: arthritic degen­ eration, intervertebral disc herniation, trau­ matic injury, congeni­ tal malformation or tu­ mour growth.

The most common symptom of lum­ bosacral stenosis is pain, hind end stiff­ ness that leads to dif­ ficulty in walking, climbing stairs, get­ ting on a sofa or chair, wagging the tail, posi­ tioning to defecate, or getting into a car.

Diagnosis requires a physical and neurologic examination, x­ rays, CT scans, MRI and and rarely electromyography. MRI is now essential in allowing treatment, especially surgery, to be planned.

The best approach is to start with medical treatment and leave surgery if there is no im­ provement or if neurological signs are developing. Physical rehabilitation is also important.

by Mark Slack TWO quick glances ­ inside and out ­ might well be enough to put this Mazda high on your list of desirable ‘smaller’ hatch­ backs.

Especially if the Mazda3 you’re looking at comes with €870 (£790) worth of ‘soul red crystal metallic’ paint. It looks stunning!

Mazda was early to discover the pulling power of a fancy red finish (it’s now on its sec­ ond, even more alluring version) and you’ll have no­ ticed how everyone else seems to have caught the bug too.

However, this latest Maz­ da3, priced at €30,080 (£27,375), has more than colour on its side. The GT Sport has a clever 2.0­litre petrol engine that adds €1,736 (£1,580) to the bot­ tom line compared to sticking

with the older engine.

The new power unit comes with what Mazda calls spark controlled compression igni­ tion which mixes conventional petrol engine technology with a touch of diesel cleverness to produce better economy and emissions.

On maximum power the 2.0­litre engine acts like a normal petrol unit, where the spark plug sets off the fuel and air mixture in the car’s four cylin­ ders.

Ease back on the throt­ tle (which m e a n s most of the time in a typical drive) and the engine turns clever enough for Mazda to claim a world first for this technology in a petrol en­ gine.

In essence, the spark plug ignites a tiny ball of fuel­rich mixture which expands so fast the rest of the much leaner mixture in the cylinder ignites itself, as happens in a

diesel engine.

So, the new engine produces 178bhp against the 120bhp of the current (and continuing) engine but official fuel econo­ my under tougher and more real world WLTP testing is as good as 5.5l/100 km (51.4 mpg) compared to the 6.2l/100 km (45.6 mpg) of the older en­ gine.

You can sometimes feel (and hear) the new technology in ac­ tion, with distant diesel­like hammering at some speeds and there’s a need to rev the engine to extract full overtak­ ing potential, but it’s a convinc­ ing case of cleverness, without doubt.

The rest of the car is more typically old school Mazda, which is nearly all a positive. So you will find a cockpit that’s well put together but veers (correctly) on the side of sim­ pler useablity, with switches and knobs rather than taking the full touchscreen route that looks sexy, but is simply annoy­ ing to use. Add to a sharp styling package and the Mazda makes for a competitive and attractive motoring package.

TESLA’S Model 3 electric car has a range of im­ proved features with an even lower price tag. The new price of $66,000 (€56,000) sees the price of this vehicle lower by a whopping $8,000 (€6,700) over some of the models.

This electric beauty now offers improved equip­ ment levels, increased driving range and minor styling tweaks inside and out.

Despite the various upgrade and changes, the new price sees the vehicle come in at much the same price as the recommended retail price set originally in 2019.

There are three separate types of the Model 3; Entry­Level, Mid­Range and Top­Spec varying in price from $66,000 (€56,000) up to $81,900 (€69,500).

TO say the game was largely dull, would be doing the word dull a great disservice, it was worse than dull, it was tedious, plus drab, plus soporific.

The standout nearest the pin went to Neil Oliver who, on the stroke index one par three, missed a hole in one by no more than a foot.
