PEOPLE are getting active this month and joining hun­ dreds of others in a virtual fundraiser for Anemona Ma­ rina Baixa.

The charity hopes to raise vital funds for those affected by breast cancer with a ‘vir­ tual walk’ between October 14 and 24.

Anemona had expected to hold its annual charity walk as usual but owing to the Covid­19 pandemic it decid­ ed to take fundraising online.

The group are asking the local population to buy an Anemona t­shirt and take a photo while walking, practis­ ing sport or exercising while wearing it. These will then be

BENIDORM’S shopkeeping and hospitality trade associations prepared for Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism talks in Madrid last Wednes­ day, October 14. This was changed at the last last­minute and the meet­ ing with Juan Ignacio Diaz Bidart, a high­ranking Ministry official, was re­ arranged for Wednesday, October 21.

Representatives of the different associations have high hopes of the outcome of the meeting, AICO said.

Annual challenge FOR the third time in the last four years, the Chairman’s team won the annual Chairman ver­ sus Management challenge.

This fun event was enjoyed by 30 members and the result was only settled with the last bowl of the morning.

With every player watching closely, Sue Kent’s team were holding shot and leading the match by 12­11.

The pressure was on Dave Gardiner to draw his wood with­ in six inches of the jack but un­ fortunately he missed narrowly, and the spoils went to the Chair­ man.

Plath’s Benidorm

Entertainers connection finally entertained

FILM director Maria Anton Cabot is currently shooting a film about the US poet Sylvia Plath in Benidorm.

Benidorm­born Anton’s short film, which will be shown na­ tionally and internationally, centres on Plath’s honeymoon which she and her husband, the British poet Ted Hughes spent in Benidorm in the summer of 1956.

Anton’s film is the second recent Spanish­made film shot in the municipality to feature Sylvia Plath, following Isabel Coix­ et’s Nieva en Benidorm (Snow in Benidorm) starring Britons Timothy Spall and Sarita Choudry.

A lifelong friendship JAVEA PLAYERS’ next production is Love Letters at the Studio The­ atre in November.

This runs between Tuesday November 10 ­ Saturday November 14 and also Tuesday November 17 ­ Saturday November 21 at 8pm.

A R Gurney’s Love Letters is a tender, tragi­comic story of two life­ long complicated friends.

AFTER the last­minute cancellation of their August gig at Los Arcos in Pedreguer, The Entertainers finally performed to a socially­distanced audience of 130 people.

The U3A Vall del Pop group provided three sets of songs from musicals as well as pop, rock­and­roll and ballads includ­ ing three costume changes.

The Dolly Birds’ dance movements made everybody want to get up and dance, while Musical Director David Rohl put together the backing tracks.

The Entertainers were raising money for Jalon Valley Help (JVH) and all the ticket money ­ a grand total of €2,200 ­ went to the charity, as Los Arcos provided the venue free of charge.

The evening’s entertainment was completed when The En­ tertainers sang the JVH theme song, You Raise Me Up, with the JVH team leading the audience.

The Entertainers have also made a CD entitled Let the Mu­ sic Play, which is on sale for €10 at all JVH shops and events, again with all monies going to the charity, thanks to Blevins Franks paying the cost of pressing.

The Entertainers’ next, and­not­to­be missed performance, will take place at the Vall del Pop U3A Dinner on November 27.

Canine park CAMPELLO Town Hall has reopened the dogs-allowed park in Villa Marco after spending several weeks on improvements to the area’s infrastructure and plants. The park now has agility equipment, a supply of pooperscooper bags and benches where dog-owners can sit.

Plasma Therapy DENIA hospital is using Convalescent Plasma Therapy for patients with mild or moderate Covid­19.

The centre, together with other Valencian Community hospitals, is participating in a study headed by San Juan hospital’s Dr Francisco Jover, Dr Ma­ rina Blanes from La Fe hospital (Valencia City), and Drs Arbona and Ortiz from the Va­ lencian Community Transfusion Centre.

The treatment in­ volves selecting mod­ erately infected pa­ tients in an early phase of Covid­19 and admin­ istering plasma from donors who recovered from the coronavirus.

In the absence of a vaccine and apart from steroids in moderately severe patients, there is little information on how to attack the virus, said Dr Angel Pellicer from Denia hospital.

“The world’s leading hospitals are using convalescent plasma therapy, a procedure that has been used in other pandemics,” he added.

This is based on giv­ ing antibodies from others who overcame the virus.

“Instead of creating their own antibodies, as occurs with a vac­ cine, this involves irri­ gating patients’ blood with plasma that con­ tains them,” Dr Pellicer explained.

The Denia patients sign a consent form, informing them of the steps that the new technique will take.

Once they authorise the transfusion, the hospital contacts the Valencian Communi­ ty’s Blood Transfusion Centre which delivers the plasma within two hours.

THE survival rate of inten­ sive care patients is improv­ ing, new data shows.

A new report from the In­ tensive Care National Audit and Research Centre (IC­ NARC), which looks at pa­ tients admitted to the ICU in England, Wales and North­ ern Ireland, show that coro­ navirus patients have a bet­ ter survival rate now than

The report shows that the number of patients who died after being in intensive

care fell by almost a quarter since the peak of the pan­ demic. Furthermore, the da­ ta shows that while 39 per cent of critical care patients died before the end of Au­ gust, this figure fell to less than 12 per cent since Sep­ tember.

Naughty Naughty THE National Police inter­ cepted a massive orgy in Madrid organised by porn producer Ignacio Allende Fernandez and two others.

The orgy took place in Madrid, a coronavirus hotspot, at a property on Calle San Romualdo in San Blas­Canillejas.

The police had raided the

property as they found flyers describing the event, stating there would be no less than 50 people and all of it would be recorded.

In spite of the amount of people inside, around 50,

there were still people wait­ ing outside to join the fren­ zy. The three people in­ volved in setting up the event will be faced with ig­ noring Covid­19 laws, and not having legal documents.

SANNA MARIN, the Finnish Prime Minister, has come un­ der fire for wearing a blazer with nothing underneath, sparking a sexism row.

Marin, 34, attended a photoshoot for fashion magazine ‘Trendi’ where she was photographed wearing a black trouser suit for the magazine cover published on Friday, Oc­ tober 9.

She demanded that the photoshoot would concentrate on politics and not her appearance, but she was shocked when other MPs called the image ‘inappropriate.’

However, the photoshoot divided opinion with many supporters leaping to the defence of the prime minister posting similar images of themselves under the hashtag #imwithsanna. Others posted photos of topless world male leaders in protest, including Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

Lorry gang busted EIGHT people have been arrested, who are allegedly behind 15 crimes of breaking into lorries parked at rest areas in towns across Spain and stealing goods valued at €500,000.

The investigation started after the Guardia Civil received calls concerning the unusual movements of a vehicle in the town of Camarena.

Simultaneously, the Madrid Municipal Police contacted the of­ ficers because they were also investigating similar thefts, so it was agreed that a joint enquiry would be sensible.

It transpired one member of the gang would undertake surveillance while the others parked one of the two vehicles they used to transport the stolen items, along with other vehicles so as not to arouse suspicion.

This is an ongoing investigation but so far goods to the value of €150,000 have been recovered.

Working Class Insecure Data WHITE, working­class boys from low­income homes are by far the most underprivi­ leged children in Britain in comparison with any other group, according to evidence given at the Education Com­ mittee’s inquiry into why poor white children do so badly at school by Professor Matthew Goodwin.

According to the Depart­ ment for Education, just 13 per

cent of white boys from fami­ lies on benefits, go on to higher education.

Yet 27 per cent of similar black Caribbean boys go to uni­ versity, 42 per cent of Pak­ istani, 51 per cent of black African and 66 per cent of Chi­ nese boys.

It is a staggering fact that on­ ly 2 per cent of white, working­ class children get into the most prestigious universities.

WOMEN across the UK are reporting that Track & Trace isn’t safe, as cases of harassment soar.

Any venue in the leisure and tourism industry or close contact services are all required to gather certain information. All business owners and event organisers are supposed to ensure there is a system to record personal data.

That way everyone who may have come into contact with them can be informed helping prevent a localised outbreak.

Venues are supposed to share the information with Test and Trace teams and, according to guidelines, data is supposed to be stored safely, then destroyed after 21 days.

However, women are complaining that the system has become a stalker’s dream as cases of harassment rise.

Xmas ready PFIZER’S coronavirus vaccine has been confirmed to be ready by December as video footage released on Sunday, October 18, saw thousands of doses come off the production line.

The world has held its breath waiting for a coronavirus vaccine to be developed and available so that the world can get back to nor­ mality and start to pick up the pieces of our shattered economy, family ties, businesses and mental health.

This wonderful announcement means that the Oxford­Astra Zeneca jab will be rolled out by December 2020.

This astonishing news means that the Covid nightmare which has plagued the global population for the best part of this year will see an end to the struggles and a move back toward normality.

Unhappy Dad

ADELE’S estranged dad has called the police on a neighbour who was playing his daughter’s music and singing along to the songs.

Mark Evans, 56, called the cops on his neighbour, Keeley Fry, to com­ plain that she was playing her music too loudly.

Keeley, 21, claims that she was approached by Mark shortly after she moved in next door and asked not to play her Adele tunes so loudly as it was ‘affecting his sleep and that it’s very disturbing.’

Mark hasn’t spoken to his daughter in years and has admitted that he was a ‘rotten father’ who wasn’t there for Adele when she needed him.

Bubble Band

MUSIC fans attended a concert in plastic bubbles as a test run for future socially distanced events.

Oklahoma City band, The Flaming Lips, held a concert on Monday, October 12, in Okla­ homa, US, for 100 fans. Both band members and the fans were inside inflatable plastic orbs in the first socially dis­ tanced concert of its kind.

The band played two songs from their new album American Head and recorded the specta­ cle of plastic bubbles for their music video.

Frontman Wayne Coyne told CNN: “I don’t think anybody would have thought in the mid­ dle of March that this is still go­ ing to be going, you know, eight months later.”

Saint in Tanzania Funeral Declined

A YOUNG British woman has taken in an amazing 14 Tanzan­ ian children she met after vol­ unteering in an orphanage.

Letty McMaster, 26, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, was only 18 years old when a month­ long trip volunteering at an or­ phanage in Africa changed her life.

She ended up staying for

three years to support the chil­ dren she had met, and when the orphanage shut down, Let­ ty took in nine youngsters who would have been left homeless.

Seven years later, she lives with the children after becom­ ing legal guardian to them all, as well as five more kids she met on the streets or at a safe house she runs.

Curve Flattening

A REPORT presented on Thursday, October 15, by Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Min­ istry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts (CCAES), indicates that the second wave may be on the decline.

Presenting the findings of the report at a press conference, Simón said that the second wave is

‘probably’ starting to stabilise in Spain. He did warn, however, that the curve could start to rise again.

Although the numbers of infections are still ris­ ing, they are doing so at a slower pace, according to the report. According to Simón, this week saw 60,000 new cases in Spain, while last week the number of new infections was 68,000.

A FAMILY, in Tehuacana in the Mexican state of Puebla, who couldn’t afford to pay their son’s funeral bills, were ‘left with his body on the floor.’

A grieving family were left with their son’s body lying on the floor of their garage when funeral directors re­ moved the casket. Their son, 19, died of natural causes.

The funeral bill came to 3,500 Mexican pesos (€140).

When the funeral directors turned up at the wake de­ manding payment, the fami­ ly offered 900 pesos (€36) but this was refused.

They then removed the corpse and put it on the con­ crete floor, taking away the coffin.

Shocked friends took to social media in a desperate attempt to scramble to raise money for the funeral costs.

Donations flooded in and the family were able to buy a new casket for their son.

Queen’s Pardon

THE Queen has pardoned a murderer who risked his life to save members of the public in the London Bridge attack.

Steven Gallant, 42, became a national hero after risking his own life during the London Bridge attacks in November 2019.

Gallant had been on day release from jail when he risked his life to confront attacker, Usman Khan.

The Queen’s decision to pardon someone of a murder conviction is extraordinary and unprecedented. This means that Gallant will now have a total of 10 months removed from his 17-year sentence which commenced in 2005.

Beastly Attraction A THEME park in Japan, on Awaji Island has got a new at­ traction. The life­size Godzilla attraction is 75ft (23m), where visitors ride a zip­line and plunge straight into the mouth of Godzilla.

The pure size of the creature is what fascinates peo­ ple. In the first Godzilla, the animal was a measly 50m but in the newest Godzilla movie: King of the Monsters the creature is 120m!

KURT looks and acts like any other young horse, however, Kurt is no ordinary horse. He is a clone.

The two­month­old colt is a Przewalski’s horse, a species native to central Asia that once went extinct in the wild and is still critically endan­ gered, with only about 2,000 remaining.

San Diego Zoo Global re­ searchers have high hopes that Kurt can help turn things around for his species. He was cloned from skin cells taken from a stallion in 1980 and safeguarded at the Frozen

BCG Vaccine THE BCG vaccine which was given to chil­ dren to protect them from tuberculosis is said to stimulate the immune system and is set to be trialled by 10,000 people glob­ ally.

In the largest trial of its kind, the UK, led by the University of Exeter supported by funding from the Peter Sowerby Foun­ dation, has joined study centres in Aus­ tralia, the Netherlands, Spain and Brazil.

Stalked “THIS is when I die!” was a hiker’s fear when he was stalked by a puma for six terrifying minutes.

Kyle Burgess will never forget his outing in Slate Canyon, Utah, after a frightening encounter with a protective puma at the weekend. In the middle of his route, he ran into four puma cubs, a beautiful experi­ ence until the mother of the cubs appeared and chased him for six minutes during which the runner ‘feared for his life.’ The protective mother of the cubs literally stalked Kyle, who recorded everything with his camera. Thankfully, Kyle managed to emerge from his terrifying episode unharmed and has since shared his footage.

Illegal Batman THE latest Batman movie, starring British actors Robert Pattinson and Colin Farrell, is still being filmed in Liverpool despite the latest restrictions recently announced.

The Merseyside city has been turned into the famous streets of Gotham despite the real-life Tier Three restrictions being put into place by the government due to the high number of Covid-19 cases in the area.

The newest incarnation of the Batman character is being played by actor Robert Pattinson, who may have surprised the residents of Liverpool with his appearance on the set of the movie, with many of them facing harsher Covid-19 restrictions.

Easy Trace Beacon of Hope

POLICE in the UK have been granted access to details of people told to self­isolate by the Test and Trace system.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has confirmed it had “agreed on a memorandum of understanding with the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC)” to pro­ vide forces with the information on a “case­ by­case basis.”

In a statement, the DHSC said: “It is a legal requirement for people who have tested positive for Covid­19 and their close contacts to self­isolate when formally notified to do so.”

Police can issue fines starting at £1,000 for first offences, which can scale up to £10,000 for repeat offences and serious breaches of the law.

AN eight­year­old boy has been called a “bea­ con of hope” for people at risk of blindness af­ ter receiving cutting­edge gene replacement therapy.

The boy is the first ever Canadian to receive this ingenious new therapy for his rare form of blindness which left the boy, Sam, unable to make out shapes in the dark, seeing the sky on a cloudy day, and had trouble making out his shoes.

It was a very worrying time for Sam and his family as his condition was progressive and would only get worse as he got older but there was no known treatment for it.

Thanks to this ingenious new treatment the boy’s sight has improved tenfold.

Diversity built Britain A NEW coin has been launched to promote diversity, celebrating ethnic minority communities in the UK. Two and a half million new 50p coins were due to be put into circulation on Monday, October 19. The new coin displays a Geodome (lattice shell) to represent connection and strength with the words ‘Diversity built Britain.’ Dominique Evans who designed the coin said, “"When designing this coin, I began by thinking about the people who inspire me and what diversity has meant in my life. I believe no matter where you are born, we all belong under the same sky and this was the starting point of the design.”

Hitler was a dictator of luxury and his personal yacht was home to a stun­ ning globe­ shaped bar.

The Ministry of Health wants to make sure that people who have tested positive for Covid­19 are sticking to the quarantine rules. To try to avoid these breaches, the Ministry of Health and Families of the Junta de Andalucia and the Andalucian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) have reinforced the measures so that these quarantines are strictly followed.

THE UK Space Agency has today backed a healthcare drone start­up founded by NHS staff, to help in the response to Covid­19.

The pandemic has seen the country pulling together, with organisations across the space sector stepping for­ ward to help.

Apian, part of the NHS Clinical Entre­ preneur Programme, aims to establish a network of secure air corridors for electric drones to navigate via satel­ lite­enabled GPS. Each drone will be able to carry Covid­19 samples, test­kits and PPE. This will avoid courier call­out waiting times, free­up NHS staff, reduce unnec­ essary physical contact and minimise the risk of secondary transmission of the virus.

CONTROVERSY mounts as Japan are consider­ ing releasing the treated radioactive water from the destroyed nuclear plant Fukushima into the sea.

The debate has been going on for several years with the Japanese government and envi­ ronmentalists on how to dispose of the liquid in which some of the water was used to cool the power station. As anger mounts from en­ vironment and fishing groups who are con­ cerned about the effects this would have on the ocean, scientists argue that the filtered water would be diluted 40 times before being released and any risk to the environment would be extremely low.

New Record A MOUNTAINEER has set a new record days after recov­ ering from Covid­19. The in­ experienced mountaineer, Akke Rahman, from Oldham set the record for climbing the mountain in Russia in just 24 hours, after recovering from coronavirus just five days prior to the climb.

Usually the hike to the top takes a few days, although he had to do it faster than usual as he only had three days on his travelling visa.

He said that his accom­ plishment had not yet sunk in and is still in shock about his record.

Legal possibility of prohibiting rental to tourists or increasing community fees in urbanisations owners in communities where they live as well as short term rentals through websites like Booking.com, Airbnb, etc.

The main complaints are excessive noise, parties un­ til late, improper use of common elements such as swimming pool, lifts, gar­ dens, etc.

There is a clear conflict of interest, as on one hand, it must be recognised that tourists have a right to en­ joy their vacations and the owner of the rented prop­ erty, has a right to obtain an economic return through tourist rental.

On the other hand, how­ ever, residents are entitled to enjoy their own home and community or urbani­ sation, without being dis­ turbed by noise or improp­ er behaviour.

These problems are abundant and growing, so in 2019, a modification was introduced in the law, which allows in an easier way, the prohibition and

limitation of tourist rentals in communities of owners.

Thus, the law 49/1964 of Horizontal Property Law (LPH), says in its article 17.12 that by means of an agreement, tourist rental may be limited or condi­ tioned, subject to a vote in favour by 3/5ths of the owners present who must represent 3/5ths of the to­ tal ownership in the urbani­ sation.

It also establishes the possibility of agreeing that the properties rented to tourists pay special expens­ es or increase their partici­ pation in community fees by up to 20 per cent.

Therefore, there is the possibility for those who object to rentals to table their objection on the agen­ da at the next general meeting, suggesting the limitation and even prohibi­

tion of this type of holiday rental.

If this prohibition is final­ ly adopted, with the majori­ ty indicated, we understand that it must be registered at the Land Registry, as it is a very important limitation and third­party future buy­ ers must be aware of this when receiving general in­ formation from the Land Registry.

Once the agreement is adopted, we understand that if the neighbour does not respect the prohibition of renting to tourists, the legal actions provided for in the LPH could be initiated against him or her by the community in court, both for cessation (to stop them from renting out the prop­ erty) and to claim for com­ pensation.

Therefore, if you have problems with tourist

rental by your neighbours, or if you are the owner of a property that is rented to tourists, and you are receiv­ ing complaints from the rest of the owners on your urbanisation, you should know that: 1. It is possible to prohib­ it or limit tourist rental in a community of owners in Spain.

2. It is possible to in­ crease the community charge to compensate the other owners in respect of a property that is rented to tourists.

Crash Claim

Settlement Trainee pilot mistakenly fired at a civilian.

THE family of a civilian contractor who was accidentally killed by a trainee F-16 pilot has been awarded an undisclosed settlement.

The F-16 pilot, along with his instructor, were undertaking his first night-time live fire exercise when they both mistook the observation area for the target. The unnamed pilot shot Charles Holbrook, 53, through the head with a 20mm round. Mr Holbrook was rushed to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Centre in Alamogordo, New Mexico but later died.

Mr Holbrook’s wife filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of herself and their 14-year-old daughter. A settlement has now been awarded for an undisclosed amount by the United States Magistrate on Wednesday, October 14.

Spend time in Spain or have a Spanish holiday home?

What 2021 means for your freedom of movement When the Brexit transition period officially ends on 31 December, UK nationals lose the automatic right to come and go in Spain that has been in place for 48 years.

From 1 January, only those who have already established lawful Spanish residence or EU citizenship will have unlimited access to the country.

So if you spend a lot of time in Spain but intend to remain UK resident, things are about to become much more complicated.

While we remain confident that Spain will continue to welcome UK visitors, as no-one knows what the new immigration requirements will be, we can only speculate based on existing rules for nonEU/EEA (‘third country’) nationals.

The 90-days in 180-days rule Unless there is an alternative UK/Spain agreement, from 2021, non-Spanish resident UK citizens will be limited to visiting Spain for

What constitutes “proof ” here could be open to interpretation, so it is risky to delay starting the application process. As well as gathering as much evidence as you can, you also need to ensure you meet the residence requirements by not spending too much time in the UK. Note that in becoming Spanish resident, you will likely also be deemed tax resident in Spain, so take care to meet your obligations here. Spanish taxation is complex, but the way you hold your wealth and assets can make a significant difference to your tax bill. A locally-based adviser with cross-border

While it’s not quite “now or never” for securing access to Spain, it will certainly get harder from 2021, so weigh up your options now for making the most of what Spain has to offer.

Our second course, the beef goulash coupled with delicious fresh pasta and salad was excep­ tional, while the team also dived into the sea bass with out of this world leeks and courgettes on a bed of light and fluffy mash. Even the side dish of fresh root vegetables was incredible.

The international standard of the cuisine is un­ questionable, coupled with outstanding service in an unparalleled venue. We were made to feel wel­ come and special throughout the visit and could see this service mirrored across the venue.

The full menu contains such desirable favourites as Fois Gras, Beef Carpaccio, Wiener Schitzel and Filet Mignon. We definitely can’t wait to come for an evening meal to sample any one of these and more.

Sugar Hike Propaganda

THE Spanish government confirmed on Thursday, October 15, that it will increase the IVA on sugary and sweetened drinks from 10 per cent to 21 per cent, to promote healthier habits and lifestyles.

The measure is included in the budget plan that the Executive has sent to Brussels. Taxes are to be imposed on certain behaviours that are harmful to the environment, health or society in general to raise the cost of their consumption.

The measure is part of a new package which the government intends to use to modify the Spanish tax system. “The estimated impact of the set of tax measures and the new Law against Tax Fraud stands at €6,847m in 2021 and €2,323m in 2022 on a cash basis,” explained the government.

Huge Gesture A GROUP of friends hired a crane to surprise a cancer pa­ tient in hospital.

The women rented the crane to visit a friend with can­ cer who has been in a hospital in Argentina for two months.

The coronavirus pandemic has meant visits to Gabriela, 52, have been restricted, and although her friends stay in touch through video calls, the women wanted to do some­ thing special.

They had the crane placed underneath her bedroom window at the Fleming Hospi­ tal, and surprised Gabriele with an ‘injection of encour­ agement’ to continue her fight against cancer during the health crisis.

The 12 women, who were carrying balloons and ban­ ners, have all been friends for more than 10 years, having met through a running group from La Plata.

THE Queen carried out first public en­ gagement since the start of the pan­ demic after leaving the royal grounds to visit the Defence Science and Tech­ nology Laboratory.

Ryanair Unfair A MODEL says she was ordered to put on a dirty mask on a Ryanair flight after she was stopped from wearing her own.

Bluebell Wooi was wearing a floral reusable face­covering made by a fashion designer friend for a flight back to the UK from Italy.

But as she was boarding, she was ordered to take it off and put on a disposal mask.

Because she did not have one she was told to ask the other passengers for a spare.

You can now have breakfast, lunch or dinner at a disco, a cocktail bar or a dance hall, provided they have the necessary li­ cences to function as restaurants, bars or cafe­ terias. They can open their doors from 8.00am until 1.00am, but in no case can they admit new customers after the 00.00 deadline.

THE world’s rarest ape, the Hainan gibbon, could be saved from extinction by rope bridges.

After a landslide divided their territory on the South Chinese island of Hainan, the already endangered gibbon is at new risk of extinction as its feeding and breeding ground has been severely limited. But experts say that building rope bridges across two areas of their forest could allow them to expand their territory.

Since these gibbons are exclusively tree-dwellers, they cannot hope to cross the damaged forest floor without help.

Rope bridges could also be used to connect habitats in other areas, experts say, expanding the territory of the endangered gibbons even further.

SVEN KIRBY, 34, who adopted two pet geese during lockdown has started taking them to his local pub wearing nappies. Sven is regularly seen out and about walking the birds, named Norbert and Beep Beep, around the streets of Leeds.

He lets them have free run of the house when he’s home but keeps them in a pen in the garden when he’s out.

Sven, who lives alone, said, “I know geese are a strange pet, but it’s something different that I have wanted for a while. I could have got a dog but as I work full time, I didn’t think that was very fair, geese require much less attention.”

Sven first had the idea of keeping geese a few years ago when he was in York visiting his thengirlfriend and saw some waddling along the riverbank. He claims, “My ex wasn’t too keen on the idea so when we broke up I decided it was my chance to finally do it.”

Lunar Network 4G is coming … to the Moon, but it’s not just all for Facebook and Insta­ gram likes.

Nokia has won a $14.1m (€12m) funding contract from the US space agency to develop and build a 4G network across the moon.

The new contract is part of a massive $370m (€315m) range of con­ tracts that were issued on Wednesday, October 14.

The contracts have been issued as part of Nasa’s renewed push to return to the moon in 2024.

Nasa said, “The system could support lunar sur­ face communications at greater distances, in­ creased speeds, and pro­ vide more reliability than current standards.”

The installation of the network could also help in the development of a permanent future base on the moon.

Phone Ban Reopening PEOPLE using a hand­held mobile phone in all circum­ stances while driving will be breaking the law, under new government plans unveiled

49 Mile Marathon

A WOMAN competing in this year’s virtual London marathon accidently did 49 miles after poor GPS reception meant she travelled nearly double the nor­ mal distance.

Poor Jodey Hopcroft suffered a huge technology failure when her phone app failed to register her miles covered, meaning she had to walk nearly another 26.2 miles in order to officially com­ plete the distance.

The event was held ‘virtually’ for amateurs this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, using the Virgin Money London Marathon app, which was used to track par­ ticipant’s progress.

However, after setting off on her walk at 4.45am along the

Campaign CAMPAIGN group #SaveNightclubs aim to help many UK nightclubs who fear closure due to the pandemic and subse­ quent restrictions.

The group says they are a nationwide coali­ tion representing over 100 nightclubs and thou­ sands of staff, who are urging the UK govern­ ment to #SaveNight­ clubs.

According to the group, they are not ask­ ing to risk public health, but rather, are asking for a lifeline to help the in­ dustry survive in the coming weeks and months.

£20m Fine Cash Buns BRITISH AIRWAYS have been fined £20 million by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) over data breach which affected more than 400,000 customers.

Following an investigation lasting almost two years, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) concluded that British Airways did not have sufficient security measures in place to process such a significant amount of personal data.

In a statement, the ICO said, “People entrusted their personal details to BA and BA failed to take adequate measures to keep those details secure.”

A QUARTER of ‘a rule­breaking’ crew on a £3 billion nuclear sub tested positive for Covid after booze sessions.

Sailors on the HMS Vigilant were under strict orders not to leave the Kings Bay US Navy base in Georgia, US, but report­

edly broke the rules and went to bars, restaurants and strip clubs.

Now, at least 35 crew have tested positive for Covid­19, in­ cluding a doctor and executive officer ­ said to be one of just two people with codes to fire nuclear weapons.

Boy T E N-Y E A R-O L D Max Woosey made a wish come true for his neigh­ bour and family friend, Rick Abbott, who gave a tent to the young boy af­ ter he knew he had only weeks left to live.

Rick, who was 74 years old when he died of can­ cer in February, told Max: “I want you to promise me you will have an ad­ venture in it.”

He has raised more than £16,000 for the North Devon Hospice af­ ter spending 200 nights sleeping outside in the tent.

According to the amaz­ ing young lad he has en­ joyed “escaping” his par­ ents and has loved being able to “read the Beano for as long as you want.”

Dancer Dies Schooling Disagreement DAVID TOOLE, the double amputee dancer who performed a breathtaking routine at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, has died aged 56.

David, who was awarded an OBE in 2019 for his services to dance and people with disabilities, will be fondly remembered for his ballet­inspired routine while being hoist­ ed high above the stadium floor in 2012.

TV Star Arrested THE star of classic TV show Home Improve­ ment has been arrested in Oregon, USA, and faces charges of strangulation and assault.

Zachery Ty Bryan, who played Brad on the long­running 1990’s TV classic ‘Home Im­ provement’ reportedly strangled his girl­ friend on the night of Friday, October 16, and stopped her from making an emergency 911 call.

The 39­year­old, who played the oldest son of Tim ‘The Toolman’ Taylor, the charac­ ter played by well­known actor Tim Allen, was arrested by officers from the Eugene Po­ lice Department after they received reports of a physical dispute.

BRITAIN’S youngest gun crime victim, Thusha Kamaleswaran, has been forced to go back to school after her parents were threatened with a fine.

The brave young girl was left paralysed after being shot in the chest during a shooting at her un­ cle’s shop, when she was just five­ years old.

Kamaleswaran, who is now 15, has been left vulnerable to respiratory in­

fections after the bullet shattered her spine, and with the risk of catching coronavirus, the move to send her to school could be life­threatening.

Her 45­year­old dad, Sasi and 43­ year­old mum, Shamila, were threat­ ened with fines from the school, Sev­ en Kings School in Ilford, Essex, despite warnings from her doctor that she shouldn’t be forced back to school.

Murder Hornets SCIENTISTS in Washington, US, have used dental floss to attach a tracking device to a female Asian giant hornet.

The female Asian giant hor­ net was caught on Thursday, October 15, and was fed strawberry jam, once the tracking device was attached, she was let out two days later.

Last year was the first time the hornets were seen, and 18 have been found since. Entomologists have tried attaching a radio to the hornet; however, the glue didn’t dry in time and fell off of the hornet. These ‘murder hornets’ can be life­threaten­ ing; their stings are im­ mensely powerful.

The hornets kill around 30­40 people a year in Asia.

€9 billion WTO rules on import tariffs

IT is certainly tit for tat in the battle between the European Union and the USA over support for their aircraft manufac­ turers with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) acting in the mid­ dle as each complains about the other.

Put succinctly, both countries submitted complaints to the WTO on October 6, 2004 with the USA complaining that Airbus in France,

A COMBINED operation be­ tween the Guardia Civil, Na­ tional Police and Spanish Tax Agency saw raids at three ille­ gal cigarette factories and the seizure of 43 tons of tobacco, almost 1.5 million packs of cig­ arettes and large amounts of machinery.

The factories which were based in Madrid, Murcia and Alicante were controlled by a Bulgarian gang and the value of the material recovered by this action is said to be €9 mil­ lion with 14 different brands of cigarette being counterfeit­ ed.

A total of 38 different peo­ ple of various nationalities in­

cluding several Ukrainians were arrested during this op­ eration and apart from ma­ chinery capable of producing 189,000 cigarettes a minute, officers also discovered a number of lorries already loaded with cartons ready to be distributed throughout Spain and much of Europe.

Four of the fake cigarette brands being produced, Fortu­ na, Winston, L & M and Chesterfield are particularly popular in Spain and the Tax Agency will have lost huge amounts of VAT and duty from their sale as will the manufacturers of the origi­ nals.

The Spanish poverty level is based on the number of households that take home less than 60 per cent of the av­ erage annual income and Spain at 20.7 per cent comes after Romania, Latvia, Bulgaria and Estonia, but for poor chil­ dren only Romania and Bul­ garia have more. vived until the winter.

Although BA has been hit with the highest fine ever issued by the UK Information Commissioner’s Of­ fice (ICO), shareholders and compa­ ny executives are breathing a sigh of relief as it was originally believed that the fine for the breach of secu­ rity in 2018 (with 400,000 passenger details lost) would be in the region of £183 million (€200 million).

Spain worried about delay

Minister for the Economy Nadia Calviño.

SPAIN’S Minister for the Econo­ my Nadia María Calviño has in­ dicated that discussions are still taking place concerning dis­ bursement of the European Union’s coronavirus recovery fund, of which Spain is one of the largest potential recipients.

The problem appears to be with regards to control and over­ sight of the use of the funds which were supposed to be dis­ tributed early in the New Year in order to help kickstart members economies.

Speaking to American Bloomberg TV the minister said “We are doing our utmost to ac­ celerate this process so that we can start the implementation of the recovery plan on January 1, 2021.”

She was very upbeat in her

view of the Spanish economy go­ ing forward and suggested that market confidence in Spain is strong and that the ruling minori­ ty government would shortly be able to finalise the 2021 budget which would incorporate dis­ bursement of the European Union funds.

In the meantime, the Euro­ pean Central Bank is buying up Government Bonds and this not only allows countries like Spain to reduce its borrowing from more expensive sources, but means that it is able to reduce its bor­ rowing forecast by almost €15 billion during 2020.

‘Us and them’ I’m afraid LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NEVER has my constant harping about legal aid lawyer fees been more justified than by the events that took place just recently. Nineteen out of 20 illegal immigrants, who, after months of wrangling, were finally being deported, became prevented from leaving, after last minute actions by their lawyers gained them a stay of ‘execution.’

Ultimately, only one finally flew off into the great blue good riddance. Once again the so called ‘activist’ lawyers, managed to retain a lucrative number of customers for their dubious companies, allowing them, under the umbrella of the ridiculous ’uman rights regulations, to bleed the British taxpayer even further.

The amount this modern day, second rate bunch of shylocks is coining in is really quite frightening. I tried a little research and found that their fees begin at something like £100 an hour.

Assuming they spend five hours a day on a case and multiply that by the 19 illegals they managed to hold back, then this batch alone can bring in some £9,500 a DAY. Multiply that by the amount of weeks or months it takes to resolve these cases and you begin to get some idea of the money these individuals are gleefully conning out of the public purse. And these 19 are only one example.

There are literally hundreds of other cases we never even get to hear about.

One assessment I came across, was that lawyers who specialise in immigrant cases are costing the tax payer around £100 million a year! Personally I think that is probably a conservative figure and in reality it is much higher.

You can rest assured than none of these sharks have any moral or patriotic obligations to the British public. They are simply hell bent on screwing the tax payer out of all they can get.

Remember also, these were the same low lifes who went knocking on doors in the Middle East, in an attempt to inveigle the citizens in war areas to lodge complaints against British soldiers

so their companies could begin legal actions against our brave men and women in the military.

They are the lowest of the low and need hitting where it will really hurt, right in their grubby money grabbing wallets. Their fees, particularly where it involves illegal immigrants, must be capped and capped pretty low at that.

If they really do have consciences and truly do care about these people, let ‘em take on a few cases pro bono. Ha! You’ve more chance of having a foxtrot with our dear Queen Elizabeth in Harrods’ window than seeing that particular scenario. Personally I can’t see why the government doesn’t take some action against this very obvious, wholly unacceptable extortion racket.

Unless of course the bosses are all members of the same old boys’ club; which is a far more likely scenario. ‘Us and them’ once again I’m afraid.

Always has been and, until the ‘revolution,’ always will be.

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I NEARLY didn’t do a column this week and in fact I’m finding them harder and harder to do. Not because I’m not grumpy, because I am, but I seem to be grumpy about the same things all the time. Things like trying to pay cash into the bank or trying to use the voucher that the supermarket sent you but you are one day early or one day late.

Spanish law where you can’t get rid of a useless community gardener that is a lunatic with a chainsaw that just hacks at everything and the company that he works for is just as bad. So you termi­ nate their contract only to find out that the new company has to employ the same gardener as the old one didn’t have a garden for him to mutilate.

So, are you ready for this, he takes the new company to court and wins!!!

Absolute lunacy.

But what really is getting at me at the moment are ‘experts.’ Not experts with degrees and PhDs who work out of lab­ oratories and secret bunkers with direct data, but the ones sitting in their arm­

chairs and know everything about everything. l don’t mean the ones that have a slightly different point of view.

I’m talking about the ones that ex­ plain why we are all mugs and this is the truth. And how do they know that?

Well because they read or watched something different to what I read or watched and decided that what they read is right and that’s it. They’re actu­ ally very condescending.

It looks like I’ve lost my bet that Trump would last four years. My loss but Cudeca’s gain. I’ve lost a few bets in my time but this one just astounds me because never in my lifetime have I seen and heard directly from people in­ volved with him say what a piece of work he is. Anyone want a bet if he will do another four years? Hopefully it will be in prison. Lock him up!!

OUR VIEW How early is too early to put up your Christmas decorations?

WITH Malaga Christmas lights already being constructed and many UK venues putting up their decorations at the beginning of November, we want to know when you think it is too early to put up your Christmas decorations.

Depending on which side of the fence you fall, Xmas decorations in October may feel sublime or ridiculous.

However, psychoanalysts have researched the differing opinions and discovered that putting up decorations early can actually increase the level of excitement and anticipation for the big day and also can affect positive change in people’s mood and attitude.

If you decided to put up a real tree, then this will dictate when you decorate. The British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) does recommend waiting until at least the beginning of December. If the tree is looked after well then it will last four weeks and see you through until just after New Year.

Tradition does dictate that putting up Christmas decorations, including the tree, should wait until the beginning of the Advent. Advent is the fourth Sunday before Christmas and will fall on Sunday, November 29, this year.

U l t i m a t e l y, w h a t y o u c h o o s e t o d o w i t h y o u r Christmas decorations is up to you. Follow time honoured traditions or make up your own. Provided you are happy, healthy and enjoying the time for family and friends then it’s all good … even if it may be over Zoom this year.

Study on experimental blood tests RESEARCHERS believe one day an experimental blood test may be able to detect a range of diseases including cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS).

The study is still in its early stages but researchers believe it opens up vast possibilities and could offer ‘huge potential,’ however they admit it is still far from clinical use. So far, the method has been tested on 320 patients and controls, and has shown success in finding diseases such as pancreatic cancer, diabetes,

traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis.

Scientists have known for some time that dying cells release fragmented DNA into the circulating blood. When cells die, it can mean a disease is just beginning to take hold, and the researchers are now looking at new methods in which they can use this knowledge to identify diseases from a blood test, detecting cell death in specific tissues. The technology is based on next-generation DNA sequencing.

by Mark Slack TWO quick glances ­ inside and out ­ might well be enough to put this Mazda high on your list of desirable ‘smaller’ hatch­ backs.

Especially if the Mazda3 you’re looking at comes with €870 (£790) worth of ‘soul red crystal metallic’ paint. It looks stunning!

Mazda was early to discover the pulling power of a fancy red finish (it’s now on its sec­ ond, even more alluring ver­ sion) and you’ll have noticed how everyone else seems to have caught the bug too.

However, this latest Maz­ da3, priced at €30,080 (£27,375), has more than colour on its side. The GT Sport has a clever 2.0­litre petrol engine that adds €1,736 (£1,580) to the bot­ tom line compared to sticking with the older engine.

The new power unit comes MAZDA3: A desirable small hatchback.

MOTORING

Mazda3 2.0 GT Sport with what Mazda calls spark controlled compression igni­ tion which mixes conventional petrol engine technology with a touch of diesel cleverness to produce better economy and emissions.

On maximum power the 2.0­ litre engine acts like a normal petrol unit, where the spark plug sets off the fuel and air mixture in the car’s four cylin­ ders.

Ease back on the throttle (which means most of the time in a typical drive) and the en­ gine turns clever enough for Mazda to claim a

world first for this technology in a petrol engine.

In essence, the spark plug ignites a tiny ball of fuel­rich mixture which expands so fast the rest of the much leaner mixture in the cylinder ignites itself, as happens in a diesel engine.

So, the new engine produces 178bhp against the 120bhp of the current (and continuing) engine but official fuel econo­ my under tougher and more real world

WLTP testing is as good as 5.5l/100 km (51.4 mpg) com­ pared to the 6.2l/100 km (45.6 mpg) of the older engine.

You can sometimes feel (and hear) the new technology in ac­ tion, with distant diesel­like hammering at some speeds and there’s a need to rev the engine to extract full overtak­ ing potential, but it’s a convinc­ ing case of cleverness, without doubt.

The rest of the car is more typically old school

Mazda, which is nearly all a positive. So you will find a cock­ pit that’s well put together but veers (correctly) on the side of

simpler useablity, with switch­ es and knobs rather than tak­ ing the full touchscreen route that looks sexy, but is simply annoying to use. Add to a sharp styling package and the Mazda makes for a competi­ tive and attractive motoring package.
