THE Valencian Community’s beefed-up Covid19 restrictions were extended for another three weeks on Monday September 7.

Speaking last weekend after a video conference with Health chief Ana Barcelo, the regional president Ximo Puig said that the evolution of the coronavirus did not justify easing the tougher restrictions introduced on August 17.

These have now been extended to gambling premises and casinos, which must now close at 1am and may not admit new clients after 12 midnight.

Puig also clarified that the 1.5-metre social distancing rule in restaurants and cafes does not only apply to the distance between tables, but also the persons sitting at them.

“It is essential to step up the pace of our control over the pandemic,” Puig declared. “We must be steadfast regarding restrictive and preventive measures.”

In line with these tactics, the Valencian Community will carry out an average of 10,000 PCR tests each day, the president revealed.

The app will be introduced gradually throughout the region as technical problems are ironed out.

“This will help us to detect cases rapidly and en-

He also confirmed that the Health department was in touch with the Emergency Military Unit (UME) and that Ministry of Defence Covid-19 contact trackers would soon be operating inside the region.

Young Basques quarantined in Calpe villa CALPE’S first Covid-19 outbreak was detected last week in a group of young Basques holidaying in a villa.

According to an official statement issued by Calpe Town Hall, 17 of them had tested positive for the coronavirus and were quarantined in the property.

Some Spanish media reports maintained that the Calpe communique was preceded by a Valencian Community’s Health department statement that named 19 positives. They also revealed that another of the group, also infected with the virus, had returned home although the health authorities ‘were aware of the situation’ and the case was under control.

Some of the youngsters, who are aged 17 and 18, began to feel unwell shortly after arriving in Calpe and contacted the local health centre, but municipal sources confirmed that they did not go to the health centre.

Instead the tests were carried out at the villa and the same sources said that the group was probably already infected when they arrived in Calpe, adding that more cases outside the group were ‘unlikely.’

The town hall has provided them with thermometers, face masks and medication via Proteccion Civil volunteers who have also been bringing food supplies to the villa while they remain quarantined.

A month of contrasts THE Valencian Community endured its hottest August in the last eight years with an average temperature of 25.2ºC. This was 1.1ºC higher than the established mean temperature and, unsurprisingly, rainfall in the region’s t h r e e p r o v i n c e s - Va lencia, Alicante and Castellon - averaged only 14.3 millilitres, 30 per cent lower than usual, according to Spain’s meteorological office, Aemet.

Where there was rainfall, this was very unevenly distributed with most falling in Alicante and Castellon.

The month began with a heatwave and finished with such a sharp fall in temperature that August 30 was, together with August 22 in 2007, the Valencian Community’s coldest August day so far this century.

VILLAJOYOSA’S beaches were visited by 1,195,952 people between June when the beaches opened and the end of August.

Most-visited were the town’s urban beaches within easy reach of the centre, but the Raco del Conill, traditionally a nudist beach, also attracted beachgoers who

preferred to remain clothed.

Assuming there would be less social distancing surveillance Raco del Conill had its fair share of ‘textiles,’ prompting Villajoyosa Town Hall to put up notices reminding the public that the beach is principally and traditionally a nudist beach.

Municipal sources urged the local population to first check all information relating to Covid-19 before they share it on the social media to avoid passing on fake news.

NINE THOUSAND children returned to ‘absolutely safe’ classrooms in Benidorm after an investment of €400,000 to adapt educational centres to the ‘new situation.’

Mayor, Toni Perez, along with Councillor Maite Moreno, visited CEIP Gabriel Miro to oversee the start of the school year 2020/2021 on Monday, September 7.

Perez said the first school day began “with absolute normality” and with “many extraordinary measures” due to the situation generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

He stressed that “the educational communities of each and every one of the centres of Benidorm have been working to adapt with protocols and contingency plans to best meet the reality with which the school year begins 2020/2021.

“The council has also taken special measures for the new year, such as strengthening the cleaning and disinfection of educational facilities during school hours, as well as access areas.

“And prevention measures have also been adopted in school transport, such as daily disinfection of vehicles and the allocation of seats,” added Perez.

In addition to the investment made to improve the schools’ infrastructure, a further €400,000 will be allocated in the coming months “once all the improve-

HUGELY POPULAR: 30,000 runners had registered for the cancelled marathon.

THE Trinidad Alfonso EDP Valencia Marathon Organisation, run by SD Correcaminos and the Valencia City Council, has been forced to cancel the 40th edition of the sporting event due to the coronavirus crisis.

In an official statement, the organisation said it “regrets having to make the decision to cancel the 40th edition of the popular race, scheduled for December 6.”

“The Organisation of

the event tried to exhaust all options in order to hold the event in a safe way for all runners, but the development of the health situation due to Covid-19 and the uncertainty of the near future are forcing us to forgo hosting the 30,000 participants that bought bibs for the 2020 edition.”

The Valencia Marathon wants to ensure “the best guarantees for the participants, companions, public and volunteers taking

part in the event, as well as for the organisational team,” which it said is not feasible right now with such a high number of participants.

For this reason, as happened with the Trinidad Alfonso EDP Half Marathon a few weeks ago, the registered runners will be contacted in the next few days to start the process of choosing, from September 15, the options regarding their entry.

Fun fundraiser for Alfaz’s AECC POPULAR Alfaz pub, the Drunken Duck, recently raised more than €2,000 for Spain’s national cancer charity, AECC. The fun started at 5pm and went on until 9pm and included a raffle, auction and billiards competition, although as the Drunken Duck’s owners, Gary and Nicki Jarman reminded everyone beforehand, face masks and social distancing were essential.

Young local resident Nikki McConnel sacrificed her long hair which was also donated to AECC to

help patients offset the effects of chemotherapy.

Gary and Nicki raised €1,930 together with two buckets full of customers’ loose change which, together with a €70 donation from Bar El Niu, took the total comfortably over €2,000. Gary and Nicki, together with Nikki McConnel, accompanied by the Alfaz’s Residents’ councillor Martine Mertens, presented the donation to Pamela Dawson Tasker, president of Alfaz’s AECC branch, who thanked all those who took part in the event.

In praise of paella THE Valencian Community’s Tourist Board is inviting everybody to take part in World Paella Day on September 20.

The regional authorities want to celebrate a universal dish that unites families and friends as they sit round the table but also symbolises the Valencian Community’s gastronomic culture and the Mediterranean way of life.

“Get out the ingredients and turn on the hobs at home,” the Tourist Board said. “Owing to the present health crisis, online communication is especially relevant this year.”

Participants can share videos, recipes, stories and photographs via internet channels and the social media with the #WORLDPAELLADAY2020 hashtag.

Villajoyosa Town Hall’s Tourism and Commerce department is encouraging local restaurateurs to sign up for this homage to the region’s gastronomy.

“We are inviting restaurants and anybody else who is interested to send us their videos of the way they cook their paella recipes,” the department said.

“These will be published between September 16 and September 20 on the Tourist Board’s social media.”

Green shoots in Gata GATA DE GORGOS’ enormous eucalyptus that was affected by fire last month is already recovering.

The tree was planted in 1915 by Dr Francisco Moratal, who later became Gata’s mayor, but although flames entered the trunk the charred section of the 30-metre high tree is already sprouting again.

This was almost cer-

tainly due to the firefighters who used a cherrypicker to douse the internal fire, municipal sources said afterwards.

The fire in the Rana area on the Gata-Javea road rekindled the following day, and was one of several that broke out at the same time in the Marina Alta, leading Guardia Civil investigators to suspect arson.

LA NUCIA’S famed Sunday Rastro flea market has reopened after an interval of six months.

Following an application from the concessionary that runs the Rastro and a technical report by municipal officials, the organisers received the go-ahead from the town hall after signing a declaration of responsibility.

They also agreed to guarantee that all national and regional anti-Covid measures would be respected.

This was the first time that the market located in Calle Villajoyosa on the l’Alberca industrial estate has operated since March 8. It now plans to open each Sunday from 8am until 2pm.

Have you always enjoyed singing?

“I started in church choirs, aged eight and was a sight to behold in cassock and ruff.”

Which genre of theatre do you prefer?

“Musical theatre has been my passion and I’ve played numerous lead roles and taken part in over 100 productions. My personal taste in music has changed with time as I ran the University Folk Club, was a soloist at a classical music festival in Yorkshire and

played Toreador Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen.”

You’ve been seen singing around town recently…

“I’ve been performing easy-listening love songs and swing in local restaurants hence my idea for Bing to Bublé although sadly, we have had to cancel this fundraising event owing to Covid-19 restrictions.”

Do you have a favourite artist?

“Sinatra is probably my favourite, although I also love Barbra Streisand and am a huge fan of West End leading man John Owen-Jones. I met him when he was playing Jean Valjean in Les Misérables and he made every hair on the back of my neck stand on end.”

Centre shut ALTEA’S Health department announced the temporary closure of the Auxiliary Health Centre in the Old Town’s Pla de Castell.

Appointments and emergencies have been transferred to the principal health centre in Calle Galotxa, Health councillor Jose Luis Leon Gascon said.

The auxiliary centre had to be closed after some of the building was flooded during a recent downpour owing to blocked gutters, he explained.

“Municipal employees are currently working to solve the problem as soon as possible.”

CALA BAEZA: Has become a boats’ graveyard.

DERELICT boats, long abandoned by their owners, are being removed from the neglected marina at Campello’s Cala Baeza beach.

The town hall’s Environment and Beaches departments acted after complaints from members of the public and the EU opposition party reached the Spanish media. Julio Oca, councillor for both departments, explained that disposing of eight boats aground on the beach, was the town hall’s responsibility.

One was registered to a Villajoyosa res-

ident who has since taken it away, while the owner of another who lives in Almoradi has been ordered to remove it.

The town hall has asked the Maritime Authority to identify and notify the owners of three more beached boats, but the remaining three are so broken-down that identification is impossible and they will be removed and scrapped.

Removing the dozen or so boats still in the water can be dealt with later, as they are the competence of coastal authority Costas, Oca said.

Prizes for budding writers THERE were 48 entries in the children’s story-writing competition that was organised by Calpe’s Municipal Library.

The competition was open to all children aged between six and 12 who were registered on the municipal Padron and they were asked to write stories centring on the theme of Covid-19. First prize in the category for children aged between six and eight went to Melisa Alarcon Montoya.

The second category for eight to 10-year-olds was won by Alexia Cabrera Olah ,while the prize for the 10 to 12-year-olds went to Miguel Perez Pastor.

Each received a tablet and a selection of books, with a selection of books for the runners-up in each category.

Pines cleared JIJONA Town Hall began clearing 2,000 tons of pines that Storm Gloria felled on the Carrasqueta mountain area in January. The biggest problem, admitted municipal sources, is eliminating the fallen trees from zones inaccessible to the heavy machinery necessary to remove them.

Community rallies round to help the homeless CREDIT: Project-Costa

COMMUNITY response to Project Costa’s ambitious b i d t o c re a t e a h a l f w a y house and soup kitchen for the homeless in the region has been incredible.

Within days of an appeal for support in Euro Weekly News, floods of donations have been received, including the amazing gift of a fully equipped industrial kitchen from local business, Yorkshire Linen.

“It has been fantastic, we have been so busy collecting donations over the last few days,” said project founder, Arne Soeten.

“On Sunday (September 6) we were given some kitchen gear and then of course we have been given a whole kitchen which we will be fitting at our halfway house in Benitachell, huge thanks to Yorkshire Linen.”

This is in addition to the clean clothes for men, women and children as well as new underwear and donations, collected the previous weekend when volunteers from the non-religious and non-profit organisation parked up their yellow Project Costa ‘Tweety’ van at Javea Port.

nate on the Costa Blanca, as well as offering a rehabilitation programme for up to three people at a time in the half way home currently being refurbished.

The team - Arne, Matty, Steven, Inge and Caroline - want to get alcoholics and drug addicts off the streets and back into

society, with some of them having first-hand experience of being homeless.

“We want to start by feeding the homeless, giving out clothes and sleeping bags. As we get to know them, we will be able to see who wants a second chance at life and we will help

them get back into society.”

Assisting the team is Stephan, a homeless man who has become a familiar face in Albir, along with his white dog carried about in his adapted bicycle.

“We have made contact with Stephan who will show us around Albir and Altea and help us meet with people living on the streets.

“We are taking it one day at a time to reach our goal, but things are moving very fast. It’s really encouraging,” said Arne.

Meanwhile, volunteer Steven Barnes, a chef and former restaurant owner from Yorkshire, is busy making plans for the mountain of meals he will be preparing from Project Costa’s new kitchen.

And he has a wealth of experience of both feeding the homeless and living on the streets, having cooked 200 meals three times a week for the less fortunate in Rome.

Steve is proof of how easy it is to end up homeless after his own

business fell victim to the credit crunch and went into liquidation while living in Rome.

It was then he set himself the challenge of getting homeless people off the streets and started volunteer group, Project Rome.

“There are thousands of people living on the streets in Rome, it is a bit different here to the Costa Blanca, but the concept is the same.

“Once we are up and running, I really want the public to be involved. I’d like people to come and taste the nutritional food I will be preparing and give their feedback.”

As well as kitchen equipment, clothes, food and sleeping bags are still needed to ensure Project Costa can reach as many people as possible.

Pete has been a resident in Spain since 1989 and is currently living in Sant Cugat, near Barcelona. The primary schoolchildren that

he teaches at the Europa International School of Barcelona might be shocked to discover the fantastic journeys he has taken in his life which look to serve as inspiration for his first published book.

Pete’s writing of ‘The Reeking Hegs’ began when he returned from a trip around South America, hence the ‘Peru’ in his pseudonym. The name was given to him by his co-writer Lord Tupelo, or Bob, when they began an inventive way to put together their collective thoughts.

“We used to bounce ideas off each other, I would write some of it then pass it on to him. Bob could choose to follow the direction I was going or take the story in a completely different direction. A lot of was written under the influence of Bob’s home brew!”

He added, “The bulk of

Keeping that imagination safe, Pete Peru. the book was written from about 1987 to 1992 when it was completed. At that point we tried to have it published, but with no success.”

The two lost touch over the years and it wasn’t until a couple of years ago when Pete discovered the folder whilst tidying up during a break from work that the project again saw the light of day.

“I decided to tidy it up a bit, rewrite it on the Mac

and send it to publishers. I was amazed to receive an offer from Montag Press but had not spoken to Bob for so long and was struggling to find him.”

In an odd twist of fate, Pete finally managed to find him in the place where all of us may logically start... through a friend that Bob played table tennis with!

The two finally saw their imaginative piece of work come together and it has now been released on

Pete Peru and Lord Tupelo at one of their writing sessions.

For Pete, it has reignited his passion for writing and he is already working on second novel The Red City, a science fiction story which he describes as the world’s first “POST-post apocalyptic novel.”

Expert eye advice for back to school students WITH children spending as much as six hours a day on smartphones and other digital devices , Specsavers Ópticas is encouraging students to have their eyes tested before they return to school

following months of lockdown learning.

It is estimated that we’ve logged an extra five billion hours online globally since our daily lives went virtual due to the pandemic, with the increased screen time

having an impact on eye health.

In fact, in a Specsavers’ survey, 87 per cent of parents

have said they are concerned about their children spending too much time in front of screens , but they are unsure on how often

their child should be taking a break from their devices, with more than a quarter (28 per cent) thinking it should be every hour.

Mike Stone, store director of Specsavers Ópticas Javea and Calpe says: “Often children do not take adequate breaks from their screens, which can cause eye strain and potentially damage their eye health, so they may notice differences in their vision when they go back to school.”

Eye strain Schools are investing in technological devices, such as tablets and laptops, to aid learning and ensure that all students can continue their education in the case of a return to home schooling. Mike says: “Eyes can often become strained when focusing on screens for a long period which, while it is not usually serious, can be particularly uncomfortable.

“Similarly, if children’s eyes are fixated on a single object for a long period of time, such as a white board, this can also cause strain. Symptoms to look out for include eye discomfort, headaches, sore or tired eyes, difficulty focusing, dry

eyes, blurred or double vision, and increased sensitivity to light.”

Follow the 20:6:20 rule Mike therefore advises following the 20:6:20 rule, getting children to look up/away from their screen and/or board every 20 minutes at something six metres away for at least 20 seconds, as this helps to relax the eye muscles.

Outdoor Time Children are also encouraged to make the most of their breaks through using outdoor time in the playground. “Aerobic exercise is vital for children’s eye health as it increases essential oxygen supplies to the optic nerve and lowers pressure in the eyes,” says Mike. ‘The outdoors provides many things for us to look at and helps prevent eyes straining when fixated on a single object for a prolonged period of time.”

Stay Hydrated “It’s also good health advice for pupils to keep their water bottle topped up, particularly when students are stuck indoors in classrooms, the weather is particularly hot, or if the school has air-conditioning, as good hydration can help avoid dry eye,” said Mike.

Problems between co-owners of a property in Spain n u m e ro u s p ro b l e m s may arise between them.

In Spanish law, it will be understood that there is, in such cases,

a community of goods, regulated in articles 392 and following of the Spanish Civil Code, since one thing (the property) belongs pro indiviso to several people.

As lawyers, the most common legal disputes between co-owners that we see, which sometimes end up in court are: non-payment by one of the coowners of the expenses, the refusal of an owner to sell the house or to buy the part owned property of the owner who wants to leave the joint ownership or community, etc.

In today’s article we are going to focus on possible judicial and legal claims, when one of the co-owners uses the property in an ex-

clusive way, preventing others from using it.

In these cases, article 394 of the Spanish Civil Code is applicable, which says: Each participant will be able to use the common things, as long as they use them acc o rd i n g t o t h e i r p u r pose and in a way that does not harm the interest of the community, nor prevent the others from using them a c c o rd i n g t o t h e i r rights.

Therefore, if a coowner prevents the other co-owners from using the property, the ones who are deprived of their right to use, based on the indicated article, may claim compensation for the deprivation of their right of use (which must be pro-

portional to its percentage in ownership), but for this, it is essential that: 1. There is an opposition to the use by the one that uses it exclusively. Therefore, it is necessary, following advice from an expert lawyer, that a legal declaration is made prior to the filing of the claim, demanding the shared use of the property.

2. It is important how to determine the compensation for the purposes of legal claims, and in general this will be equivalent to the monthly rent that could be obtained from the property if it was rented and the number of owners and their percentage rights will be taken into account

when calculating this.

Cancellations JET2 cancels all flights to mainland Spain for the rest of the summer and also advised it would not be flying to parts of Croatia either.

Travellers hoping to fly off for last-minute trips to spain were left devastated after travel giant Jet2 cancelled all flights to the mainland.

They revealed the news after government guidance on quarantine rules for travellers from the country remained the same. Spain was removed from the UK government’s ‘safe lists’ on July 25.

All flights from the company to Croatia before November will now be automatically cancelled by Jet2holidays, full refunds will be issued to customers. In a communication to agents, the operator said: “Jet2holidays have taken the decision to extend the suspension of our flights

and holidays programme to Croatia due to the continued Covid-19 pandemic.”

In a separate communication to agents, Jet2 confirmed its holidays to mainland Spain, including Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona, were also cancelled until the same dates.

Jet2 urged the UK government to implement “a targeted approach to travel advice, instead of the current blanket ban approach.”

In a statement shared on Twitter, the company said: “Where customers are affected by any programme changes, we have been repeatedly recognised for how we have been looking after them, offering the option to rebook with no admin fee, a refund credit note, or a full cash refund, and we are contacting customers to discuss these options.

902 NUMBERS: Looks like the end of the line.

IT looks like the days are numbered for the 902 premium rate customer information and service lines.

The Consumer Ministry is looking at banning numbers with the prefix, which are used by numerous telephone services. “We are starting the process for the prohibition of 902, which is going to prohibit the use of these customer service numbers

because they increase working families’ bills when they are exercising their right to complain,� Consumer Minister Alberto Garzon said in an interview with Canal Sur radio on Friday September 4. The aim is to put an end to what the minister said was a widespread abuse by companies, which has been made worse by lockdown and the Covid-19 pandemic as people have been unable

to make enquiries or sort out problems face-to-face and have had to resort to the 902 numbers.

The Consumer Ministry is now preparing a modification to the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users to prevent companies from applying prices which exceed the usual tariffs for a landline or standard mobile phone call for their customer service lines, according to Spanish press.

KATHARINA THANDERZ is Norwegian by birth and Alfasina by adoption, having lived in Alfaz for many years.

The 32-year-old also intends to win the world champion boxing title and is well on the way to fulfilling her ambition.

Katharina won the European Super-Featherweight title in 2017, followed in 2018 by the International

Boxing Council’s Lightweight Championship and the Interim World Boxing Council’s Super-Featherweight 2019 Championship.

Invited to visit Alfaz Town Hall recently with her manager Kristin Tenneboe, Katharina explained that she was a fighter “to the end.”

She began kick-boxing when she was 18, taking

the Spanish championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and winning the European and World Championships in 2011.

Katharina took up boxing in 2012, turning professional in 2016. “My greatest passion is boxing, and I’m convinced that with hard word, discipline and determination, coupled with my tenaciousness, I’ll be able to reach my goal of becoming world champion,” she told Alfaz’s mayor Vicente Arques.

Alfaz’s Sports councillor, who was also present, congratulated Katharina on her brilliant career. He was confident, he said, that he would soon be seeing her again with the World Boxing Council’s Super-Featherweight title under her arm.

Gender violence victim mourned ALTEA’S mayor, councillors and municipal employees held a minute’s silence for 33-year-old Jesica Daniela Gularte, murdered in Patraix (Valencia).

In a manifesto read out on the town hall steps by Personnel councillor, Rafael Ramon Mompo, the municipal corporation condemned all murders based on gender violence.

The manifesto also cited the Valencian Community’s Pact against Sexist and Gender Violence as the means of combating any type of aggression against women.

Altea - Albir - Alfaz

THE family of Rudolf Schuler donated three of his works to Altea Town Hall.

Schuler, born in Grossrosseln (Germany) in 1931, studied art in Saarbrucken, Le Havre and Paris, living in Finestrat and later Altea from the early 1960s onwards until his death in 2018.

“My father met my mother in Alicante port, on his first journey to Algeria, and they married two years later,” explained his daughter Ruth Schuler.

He was one of the first painters to arrive in Altea, she said, and he and Eberhard Schlotter - another German painter - did much for Altea after appearing on a German television programme.

DONATION: Schuler’s daughter, and grandson with Altea’s mayor and Culture councillor.

“Germans discovered Altea and many came on holiday, drawn by shots of Altea and places like Guadalest,” Ruth added.

Most of Schuler’s work belongs to private collectors, she continued, although he earned a living mainly by painting portraits.

“We made this donation because he lived here so long and we feel that the people of Altea deserve to enjoy some of his work,” she said.

The pictures will soon be on display in Altea’s Casa de Cultura, announced Altea’s Culture councillor Aurora Serra.

Miguel Indurain swaps bikes for Morocco race MIGUEL INDURAIN from Navarra is in Alfaz, preparing for the 15th edition of the Titan Desert 2020 race.

Now 55, with five Tour de France triumphs behind him, two Giro de Italia victories and an Olympic Gold in Atlanta, Indurain is substituting his racing bike with a mountain bike.

He is training for the six-day race that is run through the Moroccan desert between the Atlas mountains and the Sahara, covering up to 130 kilometres a day. He will be riding with his son Miguel and Carmelo Lopez from Alfaz for the KH-7 team.

This is managed by the former champion’s friend and ex-professional cyclist, Melcior Mauri, who has persuaded him to take

No cause for worry AT the time of writing there was no evidence of a work-related Covid-19 outbreak at Calpe Town Hall.

Almost two weeks ago a municipal employee tested positive for the coronavirus, but all the tests carried out on other members of staff have given negative results, confirmed Calpe’s mayor Ana Sala and Health councillor Ana Perles.

Although neither revealed how many tests had been carried out, both emphasised that the case is being “closely monitored.”

CalpeNEWS Erasing last traces of Storm Gloria

LA FOSSA: Work has restarted on repairs.

RECONSTRUCTING accesses to Calpe’s La Fossa beach, which were damaged by Storm Gloria last January, has restarted.

As this affects the stateowned maritime strip, the €115,840 project is being carried out by the coastal authority, Costas, which agreed to halt reconstruction at the beginning of July so that access was not obstructed during the tourist season.

Under normal circum-

stances the repairs and rebuilding would have been completed much earlier, but tenders for public works were suspended during the Covid-19 State of Alarm, Calpe Town Hall explained.

The different La Fossa entrances are being rebuilt in line with accessibility regulations and also those set out in the Ley de Costas (Costas Law). Once these have been completed, work is due to start midmonth on demolishing storm-damaged sections of

the promenade’s retaining walls, all of which are to be rebuilt. Paving that was destroyed in January will also be replaced.

The Coastal Authority will carry out further repairs to the wooden steps to the Arenal and Calalga beaches which also suffered the effects of the January storms.

The town hall also announced that it intends to substitute the Plaza Colon’s promenade’s existing railings.

Calpe NEWS Fingers crossed for December exhibition CALPE’S Agrupacion Filatelica y Numismatica is already preparing for the 25th EXFICALP exhibitions planned for December.

The annual exhibition centring on stamps and coins will this year feature another 25th anniversary, in this case the twinning between Calpe and Puerto de Santa Maria (Cadiz).

The EXFICALP organisers revealed that they are considering the possibility of dedicating this year’s exhibition to the Puerto de Santa Maria’s Sociedad Filatelica y Numismatic ‘Guadalete’ to commemorate the relationship between the two municipalities.

Both are now in contact and initially there are plans to hold the event at the Exhibition Room in Calpe’s Ajuntament Vell (Old Town Hall) building between December 4 and 30 but, as so much at present, doubts remain whether the Covid-19 situation could prevent the exhibition from going ahead.

Parents with children at the Sant Vicent Ferrer school were able to leave their cars in the Auditorium car park while the Cap d’Or school had a vehicle-free area between the entrance on the old Moraira-Teulada road and the rubbish containers and behind the Wok restaurant.

CLUB NAUTICO: Worries about Zec expressed at recent meeting (inset).

TEULADA-MORAIRA is opposing some aspects of Environment Ministry plans for the Marina Alta’s protected marine zone (ZEC).

Carlos Martinez and Alejandro Llobell, the town hall’s Environment and Agriculture and Fisheries, recently met other sectors affected by proposed ZEC modifications.

The meeting was held at Moraira’s Club Nautico and the councillors spoke to representatives from the club, Moraira’s Fishing Guild, local angling associations and others economically

linked to nautical tourism.

TeuladaMoraira Town Hall, like Denia and Javea, has expressed concern at the ZEC’s impact on local businesses and tourism.

It has also announced that it intends to appeal against a Ministry move to ban traditional fishing methods where nets are in contact with the seabed in ZEC areas.

All these local objections will be passed on with the town hall’s concerns in a joint submission to the Environment Ministry.

“Teulada-Moraira’s Environment department has stressed that we are in favour of protecting the environment and, above all, our coastline owing to its extraordinary richness and biodiversity,” Martinez said.

“But we are calling on the Ministry for more dialogue and the involvement of the relevant administrations as well as our municipality’s economic and social sectors.”

Ordinarily these would have been carried out last spring, ready for Easter week, but Covid-19 and the State of Alarm obliged municipalities to put plans on the back burner.

This was the case with the Paseo David Ferrer, the promenade named in honour of the Javea-born tennis ace, where work began at the beginning of last week.

This will also be the last phase of reconstruction needed after Storm Gloria

Local Police back to normal numbers FIFTEEN new Local Police officers have entered the Javea force following the last round of public entrance exams.

Javea’s mayor Jose Chulvi and Public Safety councillor Pepa Gisbert were present as the officers were sworn in, although until they have completed six months’ official instruction from the Valencian Institute of Public Safety and Emergencies (IVASPE) they will be considered trainees.

The new intake will, it is hoped, solve the former problem of having so many interim officers and bring more stability to the force.

There now remain only three non-established officers - one of whom recently occupied the post - who will provide backup for the Local Police’s new responsibilities arising from the coronavirus and safety procedures.

Gisbert revealed that a new contracting process will commence in coming weeks to fill three posts considered as ‘mobile’ and another five tenured positions.

These additional eight officers will cover vacancies resulting from retirements over the last two years, allowing the force to regain its normal complement.

HAS the fast tide of legislation and decrees imposed by politicians taken into account the vast costs on vulnerable sectors of the population?

We continually hear the phrase ‘social distancing’ as the temporary solution until a vaccine is available. The problem is that this solution is a utopia. Our economic system is based on the exchange of goods and services, fundamentally physical rather than virtual.

As seen in our communities, the rules imposed from our ‘trusted institutions’ are not profitable for most businesses which are closing down and in turn causing a domino effect on the economy and that is also reaching out into health issues which are not Covid related.

Nowadays no one is self-sufficient and we are not just talking economically, but also on an emotional level. When speaking of distancing it seems that

REPORT: Detailed the death of the elderly due to abandonment during isolation. the health authorities are not taking into account human emotions; they refer to us as if we were machines that can be programmed without any effect on our health.

However, health has a far more extensive overall reach than what we can physically view.

A few days ago, the NGO Doctors Sans Frontières published a devastating report on what happened in care homes in Spain during the worst months of the pandemic.

It explains, among many other things, the death of the elderly due to sorrow and abandonment produced by isolation

which was decreed by our governments.

So, it seems that our health authorities imposed strict rules to protect our loved ones from coronavirus, but not from death. Furthermore, we were also told how to bury our loved ones, as cremation was compulsory during these months in

Spain and in most cases, postmortems were not allowed.

As also seen this summer, towns such as Aranda del Duero in the north of Spain were sent back into lockdown with no hospital cases and based only on the PCR tests, that are now being questioned

by Professor Carl Heneghan from the University of Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-based Medicine. This has left many people without work causing even more stress on the government’s treasury and people’s well-being and way of life.

The perspective most people fail to see is that isolation is only sustainable for certain sectors, who can financially sustain themselves.

It seems as if politicians are happy to ensure that people do not get Covid, even if the decisions fail to secure a future free from emotional problems or hunger due to the collapse of the economy.

I have read with dismay your EWN article re­ garding the 90­180 day ruling for tourist stays in Spain. We are UK residents and own a property in Spain. We usually spend some time between January and June in Spain. With the new ruling we will obvious­ ly not be able to exceed 90 days during that period. In addition we usually return in early September for about six weeks. Your article states that we have to be out of Spain (I assume this also means all of the Schen­ gen area?) for 90 days before we can return, so our earliest return date would be in October. Are my as­ sumptions correct?

First, the tourist stay of 90 days in a 180­ YOU AND THE LAW day period is not a IN SPAIN ‘new ruling.’ It is an EU regulation which has been in effect for some years.

The confusion arose because various countries, includ­ ing Spain, did not strictly enforce it. Yes, your assump­ tions are correct. You must remain outside Spain for 90 days. And you must not stay in any European Union country except your country of residence.

Costa Coffee cuts

POPULAR BRAND: Trade is returning, but takings are definitely down.

COSTA COFFEE owned by the Coca-Cola group is probably the most popular of the coffee café brands in the UK, but it is suffering and is considering shedding around 1,650 jobs from its 2,700 stores of which 1,100 are franchises.

The company closed almost all of its outlets for six weeks during the lockdown and so far 300 remain closed, but with the downturn in footfall caused by fewer shoppers and office workers, takings are definitely down.

Throughout the pandemic, Costa has taken action to pro­ vide, where possible, financial support and to look after em­ ployees and while stores were closed, all team members were put on the furlough scheme provided by the gov­ ernment, with their salary topped up by Costa to 100 per cent for 12 weeks.

It agrees that trade is re­ turning, helped by the gov­ ernment’s VAT reduction, which Costa passed on to customers in full, and the re­ cent ‘Eat Out To Help Out’ Scheme, but there remain high levels of uncertainty as to when trade will recover to pre­Covid levels.

Costa claims that it has made significant investments in safely accelerating the re­ opening of stores, ensuring they are safe for customers and team members and made the difficult decision to freeze all pay increases within the Support Centre and cut all non­essential expenditure.

Managing Director Neil Lake said following the announce­ ment, “Today’s announce­ ment to our store teams was an extremely difficult decision to make. Our baristas are the heart of the Costa business and I am truly sorry that many now face uncertainty follow­ ing today’s news.”

Xanadú for sale AS previously reported, British developer Intu Properties has been placed into Administration (a form of bankruptcy) and as expected, liquidator KPMG has instructed a Spanish agency to try to find a buyer for its 50 per stake in Madrid shopping centre Xanadú.

It was as recently as 2017 that Intu purchased the centre for €530 million and then quickly sold half to Nuveen Real Estate Fund and last year it managed to sell its Zaragoza shopping centre and pulled out of a planned development in Torremolinos.

It’s really not their fault

WE really shouldn’t be blaming the immigrants for pouring across the channel in their droves.

It’s really not their fault. If you were sitting in a muddy foreign field, rain dripping on your head through the holes in your tatty tarpaulin ceiling and someone showed you a photo of the luxury hotel room you could be occupying by crossing a mere 20 odd miles of fairly safe water, wouldn’t you give it a go? I know I would. The irony is that the photos and reports they receive are all true.

Many of those who have ‘made it,’ actually are sitting in comfortable, free hotel rooms with telly and ensuite bathrooms. Recently I watched Alan Boulton interviewing an ex border control chief.

‘What actually happens to the majority of these people when they are picked up’ he asked? ‘Well,’ the ex-chief explained. ‘Ultimately they are all taken somewhere to be processed; we take their particulars and fingerprints and then let them go’! Apparently, in an act of naivety that almost defies the imagination, they are subsequently instructed to ‘report back in a couple of weeks’! ‘And what percentage com-

payers’ money and are a large part of the problem. The message that goes back across the channel has to change.

It simply cannot appear to offer desperate people a kind of utopian Shangri-La, with free legal aid to explore a multitude of loopholes in a system that already resembles a terminally perforated colander.

For heaven’s sake someone get a grip.

The UK is rapidly losing control and when it hits the fan, don’t look to the likes of Gary Lineker to solve the problem - it just ain’t going to happen.

Delighted to see the awful Kay Burley’s new show being slated by the critics. This bitchy egotistical woman, who laughingly sees herself as a ‘probing’ reporter, is nothing more than a nasty bitter individual who, if she wasn’t a major shareholder, would have been put out to graze by SKY news years ago.

Constructive noises issuing from the mouth of Tim Davies the new Director General of the BBC. Let’s just see if he puts his money anywhere in its vicinity.

Suited and booted: those days are so over!

BARRY DUKE LAST Saturday I posted a wedding picture on Facebook to celebrate the third anniversary of my marriage to Marcus, my companion of 23 years. One friend commented ‘My, oh my, you do scrub up well!’

That got me thinking about the days when my entire career in PR and publishing was spent being suited and booted.

So much money was sloshing about in Thatcher’s ‘greed is good’ Britain at the time that soon I discovered I could afford a suit tailored in Saville Row. But all the good feelings I had when I strolled into Gieves & Hawkes gave way to embarrassment and fury when a supercilious assistant gave me the once over and said ‘I’m sure we can create something suitable for a portly young gentleman such as yourself.’

Portly? I’d never been called portly in my life, and I was mortified.

Truth was that the good life had endowed me with a sizable gut, but

I’d been in denial over my weight gain. So I slunk out, and vowed never to return until I’d slimmed down.

After regaining the shape I had in my teens through diet and strenu-

ous exercise, 18 months later I got my first bespoke suit, a seductive black silk number, just in time for a company dinner at posh restaurant in Soho. The event was intended as

a bonding session for two groups working for separate companies that had merged.

My team comprised mainly down-to-earth East-Enders. The oth-

er was made up of insufferable toffs and toffettes, and as soon as the two sides met, you could cut the air of hostility with a chainsaw.

Somehow, despite their side and our trading dirty looks and insults, we actually managed to end the meal without violence.

But then a creep - an 80s version of Jacob Rees-Mogg - decided to ‘kill’ a profiterole served as dessert by placing it on the table and banging it with a fist. The result: the whole of the front of my new suit got spattered with cream.

I grabbed his tie, dragged him over the table and onto the floor and began exchanging blows.

Within seconds a full-scale brawl you know the kind, there’s one in every western movie ever made ensued.

Staff managed to break up the fight involving around 30 and we were all tossed out and warned never, EVER to return.

When I became self-employed about 30 years ago, I donated my entire wardrobe to a charity shop, and never wore a suit again until the day I married.

Nowadays I’m far happier looking like an old biker dude than an 80s yuppie.

HEARTBREAKING DEAR Euro Weekly News, It was so upsetting to hear of the two hugely destructive fires in the Costa del Sol, Sisu and Laguna Village. It is the last thing these business owners need at such a bad time for the tourist industry on the coast. The pictures of the charred building remains were heartbreaking. I really hope the community will come together and create some kind of benefit for them, if not to help them with their losses then just to show that they have some support. I don’t know if that kind of thing happens in Spain but in Portland, where I am originally from, that is the kind of thing that we would do.

I would like to send all my support to anybody that may have been employed there or who was involved in the fighting of the fires.

AIR bridges, red lists and the Great British quarantine debate. What on earth is going on? Country in, country out, country back in again. No wonder holidaymakers are tearing their hair out with confusion.

After UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s comments on British TV last week, travellers already in Portugal started panic buying flights to get them back as soon as possible, his vague replies, when questioned about an imminent quarantine decision, left them second-guessing Parliaments decisions.

Then, what happens, they leave it alone, well kind of.

They left it for travellers to England and Northern Ireland, but Scotland and Wales decided to make their own decision and lower the drawbridge on the air bridge, they put a quarantine in place for those coming from Portugal.

Now holidaymakers or those who wish to return to second homes or families are living in an added fear or confusion if they too will be put under this strain and uncertainty.

The Scots were already hoping for the quarantine to be lifted between them and holiday favourite, Spain, but in adding Portugal to a red list the chances of that happening are slim to none.

Sure, people understand that as Covid figures rise in each or any country there is a fear of transmission between countries. Should people be able to make up their own minds about travelling? Especially if it puts their livelihood or even mental state at risk.

The news of a testing facility at Heathrow sitting unused was a revelation, who knew? If that was a way of allowing you in without quarantine you can be sure that everybody would be heading there, wouldn’t they?

I believe the virus was introduced around the world by China so it would disrupt the world trade so they could buy companies cheap and also buy world debt so they could control the world. Welcome back Dear Euro Weekly News, I read in your paper that The Food Fairies are about to make a welcome return to the Costa del Sol. Must I say I have missed reading about the great help they gave families during the first parts of the virus and the initial shock of isolation. I totally understand why they have made a comeback, families are still in need. My wife and I often take care packages to our local food bank when able and it is upsetting to see young children waiting for their next meal.

After the impact the virus has had on employment I am sure there must be even more families going without than before, such a shame, I am happy they will get some help from these magnificent girls. It would be great if more people could follow their lead and come up with their own aid groups.

However, you were diplomatic not to mention that a proportion of those going to Uni are only doing so to put off the evil day when they will have to work for a living and to have a good time. You may not have been aware, but the moment you felt that genuine passion and excitement, you were visualising the event and by visualising, you were manifesting the thought and feeling into an experience.

The fact that 3 per cent of the population earn approximately 97 per cent of all income, isn’t down to luck. It is down to the fact that they believe and live by the Law Of Attraction.

Many people live their lives, the way society tells them to. We become a creature of habit, comparing ourselves to people around us. By doing this, we live our lives with limited beliefs, therefore, cre-

ating a limited lifestyle.

One way to create a limitless life is affirmations.

Affirmations are a short statement, that you repeat all day, every day, but with feeling.

For example; If you have a bad ‘feeling’ towards money, then the law is to create a further lack of money.

However, by using an affirmation such as, ‘money comes to me easily and frequently,’ this can change. It is important to note that but just repeating the words, nothing will change. You have to FEEL and BELIEVE in what you are saying.

This particular affirmation is one I put to the test.

I even went a step further and created a cheque for a specific amount.

I held that cheque in my hand, every night before I went to bed and visualised receiving it. I created the feeling, the thought and the visualisation. Within a week, I received the exact amount I’d asked for.

1. Develop new tools to help you manage stress.

Stress is a common trigger for almost any mental health disorder. The more stress you have in your life, the more likely you will be tempted to resort to old thought patterns and behaviours.

Try them out to determine the methods that you enjoy most and practise them on a regular basis.

2. Avoid old habits and patterns You will need to make a conscious effort to stay away from some of the issues, situations, or triggers that put you at risk. Avoid the temptation to avoid change. The ‘new and improved you’ will have a difficult time succeeding if you keep resorting to what you did in the past. Change is hard.

3. Get help Seek help immediately for any serious mental health issues that suddenly crop up. If you can address these unresolved issues and work through them, your risk of relapse will be much lower.

4. Watch Out for Substance Abuse It’s common for young people that struggle with mental health disorders to self-medicate. Even though alcohol is a depressant, it’s often used to numb the side effects or symptoms of depression.

5. Stick to Your Treatment Plan After you’ve completed a treatment programme, it’s crucial that you follow the plan you developed with your therapists and doctors.

If you are supposed to attend regular therapy sessions, don’t skip appointments. If medications are involved in your treatment routine, follow the orders for the prescription.

6. Have a Backup Plan If you experience a setback, make sure you have a plan in place. Mistakes happen. Knowing what you might do ahead of time can be very effective when you feel you are being tested by tough times. The worst thing you can do is give up.

7. Find healthy new ways to have fun The old behaviour patterns may have taken a lot of time and energy.

Replace them with activities that add joy to your life. Consider trying a new hobby or sport. Having a new interest can make you a lot less vulnerable to relapse.

8. Educate yourself Read books or network with others that are actively engaged in strengthening their recovery. Find out what worked for other people. The more you learn, the more coping skills you’ll have for sustaining your recovery.

9. Build a strong support system The more people someone has in their life that want to lift them up, the odds of them falling down decrease.

Deepen your ties to the ones you trust.

Special friends, family members, classmates, co-workers, or therapists can be great resources when you need them the most.

10. Remember your goals Don’t lose sight of the big picture.

Continue to strive for your vision of the way you want your life to be. Along the way, set smaller attainable goals, too.

This can help keep you focused and on track.

11. Know that this too will pass If you experience a relapse, try to learn from it. It’s important to remember that relapse episodes are often a normal and natural part of recovery.

If you can benefit from these experiences, you can become even stronger and more resilient.

“Bit by bit, people are getting back to some sort of normal. We

had one couple who said they only felt safe coming here on their first trip out of the house.”

Known as Monroes Carvery for 15 years, Heidi was keen to distinguish the restaurant from the Moraira based eatery two years

ago, to reflect the management’s different approach to dining and its diverse menu.

“To make the distinction between the two restaurants, we changed the name here to Black Flame Bar and Grill over a year ago, and since the name change, we have got busier.

People realise we are doing so much more now from our flameburner kitchen, rather than just carvery.

“We’ve always done steaks, and are now offering ribs, pies, fish and chips, and specials. We are predominantly grill and carvery, as the name suggests, but we do offer vegetarian dishes as well as vegan options.”

Monday night is pie night, which is €7.95 with a dessert.

Lunch menu is three-course and served with half a bottle of wine, and Fishy Friday is very popular and served all day, €8.95 including a choice of dessert.

NEW CD: Manchega Tramontana Association will perform the compilation on Thursday evening.

BENIDORM’S Manchega Tramontana Association will present its new folk music CD at the town’s Assembly Hall this evening (Thursday, September 10) from 8.30pm.

Admission is free, but guests are advised capacity is limited in line with Covid restrictions.

The association, which has around 200 members, is involved in a variety of activities; musical, gastronomical and cultural. The CD was put together in January, and after months of lockdown, music lovers can now make the most of the opportunity to hear the musicians perform the tracks live.

Suzuki Vitara Hybrid Lots to like in this no nonsense SUV ROAD TEST

by Mark Slack WITH so many cars appearing to share style, equipment and technology these days manufacturers have to identify that special something which sets them apart from the competition.

Some do it via special offers, extra equipment and regular facelifts and others take a simpler route to success. One such maker is Suzuki.

The Japanese car maker recently celebrated its centenary and is known for small cars, SUVs and motorbikes along with marine engines and ATVs. One of their best known, and most admired SUVs is the diminutive Jimny,

which is a formidable offroad performer.

In slightly larger form their Vitara makes for a practical and comfortable on and off-roader, with more than a dash of old fashioned style. Thanks to its straightforward boxy design you can pack a lot into the Vitara and it comes with a no nonsense, well-built feel. Prices start from €24,272 (£21,749) for the lead-in SZ4 which comes as standard with alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, automatic air conditioning, automatic lights and wipers and Bluetooth.

There’s just one power unit for the range and it’s a very good one too. The 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine also has an electric motor that helps econo-

my, lowers emissions and gives a performance boost. In a week of sometimes not so leisurely driving I notched up an average 46 mpg.

It’s a smooth and refined unit and possessed of enough power to nip past tractors and other slow traffic. The benchmark 100 kmh (62 mph) is passed in 9.5 seconds with a top speed of 190 kmh (118mph).

It’s no performance powerhouse but has more than enough capability to deal with motorway cruising speeds and overtakes on single carriageway roads.

Inside the no nonsense approach continues with a comfortable look and feel albeit lacking in the interior fripperies of more

flouncy rivals. Everything looks well able to stand the daily scuffs and knocks of everyday family and working life. A welcome lack of digital nonsense is heralded by buttons, and even on the touchscreen there’s minimal tapping required. Volkswagen Audi please note!

Options include fourwheel-drive on the top of the range SZ5 model, along with some rather snazzy colour combinations and very sensibly priced styling upgrades.

The Vitara makes for a sensible purchase given their well-earned reputation for reliability.

Add in the generous levels of standard equipment and it’s not hard to see why the Vitara remains a popular choice.

I TA LY ’ S Nations League Match Against Netherlands took place on Monday, September 7 at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, and what a game!

The high pressure from the visitors paid off, and the Italians dominated possession in an impres-

sive first half. Nicolò Zaniolo, Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne skimmed the goal, before Nicolò Barella made a clever run to head a Leonardo Spinazzola cross in the culmination of a beautiful team play on the edge of half-time to score the only goal of

the match.

In the 40th minute, Nicolo Zaniolo was subbed following a knee-to-knee collision with Donny van de Beek and it seems like it could be similar to the ACL injury he suffered in January however, to the opposite knee.

IN much fresher temperatures, Montgo Golf Society held a Stableford Competition where all the players played from the Blue Tees, sponsored by Terry Griffiths.

As Oliva Nova are improving the cart paths, some of the tees have moved therefore, so players were unable to make the competition handicap qualifying.

With a return to the winning frame was Ross Fletcher with 41 points, second place went to Tom Atkinson with 36 points beating on count back into third place Richard Fox also with 36 points.

The two nearest the pins last Friday, September 4 were won on the third by Richard Fox and on the 16th by Peter Gardiner.

There was only one two achieved, by Tom Atkinson on the 16th.

Montgo Golf Society’s next competition is Stableford sponsored by Sally and Keith Cottrell.

Again, unless the tees are back in their normal places, the competition will not qualify for handicap purposes.
