MALAGA Mayor, Francisco de la Torre, says Costa del Sol should not be forgotten in UK quarantine negotiations. The Spanish executive “cannot forget Malaga and the Costa del Sol in their negotiations with the British government to get exceptions in regard to the mandatory quarantine decreed for tourists returning from Spain,” argues de la Torre. The calls come in the wake of the UK’s government shock decision to implement a 14-day compulsory quarantine requirement on all travellers returning from Spain and the Foreign Office advice against all non-essential travel to the country. Reducing this to 10 days was on the cards as EWN went to press. “It would be a mistake

The decree has come as a shock to many people, tourists as well as politicians, both in Spain and in the UK. Currently, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands are rallying to be excluded from this quarantine measure. On Sunday, July 26, the

president of the Costa del Sol Council and Tourism, Francisco Salado also asked for the “same treatment” for the “Costa del Sol” as for the rest of the “main national tourist destinations.” Salado argued that there is no space for “grievances or privileges” as this is a sensitive issue which will affect many businesses

and families in Spain. He added that the region should not be grouped in with the rest of Spain as it has a “very low incidence rate” in terms of the coronavirus. Meanwhile, Marbella mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, will be presenting a motion at the next plenary council meeting to demand that the central government al-

so requests the UK creates a safe tourist corridor with the Costa del Sol. She points out that Marbella has a genuine grievance that in her negotiations with the British government, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya has asked for the exclusion of the Balearic and Canary Islands from the quarantine imposed on travellers from Spain. In an impassioned statement she said: “It is not understood that once again the Executive of Pedro

Sánchez turns his back on the Costa del Sol and that the incidence of British tourism in our market is not even considered, the epidemiological indicators which show that we are a safe destination or the effort that the health and tourism sectors have done during all these months.” She added: “Unfortunately this is not a new abuse; we already suffered when we were prevented from passing the phase during the de-escalation without any objective criteria.”
