EXPATS on Spain’s Costa Almeria have expressed fury over people flouting the Andalucia-wide rule making it compulsory to wear face masks at all times, with others praising public response to the measure.

In posts on local social media forums there were reports of people out and about on Mojacar Playa’s promenade with masks slung round their elbows rather than covering their faces.

This is in stark contrast to other reports from locals.

One resident hazarded a guess that as many as 25 per cent were not wearing a mask on their arm or anywhere else on Saturday morning.

“They are just ignorant,” was one response.

Yet the common view is that it is just a minority who are not taking the face mask rule seriously.

When the Euro Weekly News went to take a look round Mojacar Playa this

week the only individuals who didn’t have on a mask were small children, serious exercisers and people sitting on the beach or bar and restaurant terraces.

One forum post meanwhile reported a “heavy police presence and 100 per cent compliance” in Mojacar Pueblo at night at the weekend.

“So impressed that almost everyone here in this part of Spain is obeying the rules,” commented British surgeon Roger Adlard after a visit to Garrucha.

Roger, who has a second home in the area and has been a frequent visitor to the Costa Almeria for the last 25 years, is here on holiday.

He is of course very used to wearing a face mask every day for his job, and told the Euro Weekly News, “even I struggle wearing one in 30 plus degrees, so I’m very impressed that people are managing.

REPORTS posted on social media of two dogs being kept in appalling conditions at a property in El Ejido led to the arrest of a 22-year-old on charges of animal neglect.

“Bonkers” fundraiser “A GENUINELY bonkers idea for the time of year,” was how Richard Clarke described the 36-kilometre charity fundraising hike from Arboleas to Los Gallardos he and a small team successfully completed in searing summer heat.

Richard, the owner of Arboleas-based estate agency Calida Homes, along with David Lyons, Keith Lazelle, and Raymond and Tessa Roofthooft, put their best feet forward on the last Saturday in June for Arboleas Walk for Life.

This registered charity helps people affected by cancer and in financial need, of all ages and nationalities, within a 25-kilometre radius of the locality.

In normal times its biggest fundraising event is the annual six or three-kilometre walk around Arboleas, and Richard normally takes part. The Covid-19 pandemic meant it could not go ahead this year.

What is the protocol when travelling in vehicles? Well they are actually very straightforward, so as a public service here are the rules: IN A CAR *If you are alone you don’t have to wear a mask. *If you are with members of your household you don’t have to wear a mask. *If you are with people who do not live in your household you must wear a mask.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT *You must wear a mask at all times on public transport, be it a bus, train, taxi or Uber.

WORTH IT: The final amount raised for the Arboleas Walk for Life cancer charity is at least €2,100. his son in May, and as they had done previously to raise funds for Walk for Life, also fell victim to the health crisis. So he came up with the idea of the walk to Los Gallardos walk instead.

Los Gallardos is where the Calida Home’s walking football team FC Los Amigos has its grounds and trains. The team raises a lot of money every year for Walk for Life, and has staged a number of events this year on a reduced scale.

The idea was for Richard and the other walkers to meet up with the team members in Los Gallardos to see them all for the first time since lockdown and

collect the approximately €500 they’d collected.

Richard told the Euro Weekly News that in retrospect he should have done a lot more preparation for the very long hike than just three to four kilometre a day walks with the family dog.

“It wasn't anywhere near enough!” he admitted.

“When I came up with the idea it seemed tough, but possible. The closer it got to doing it, the more nervous about it I became.

“The temperatures were soaring and a lot of the route was on very busy, not too pretty roads. Over

the last eight kilometres it reached 35-38 degrees, and I developed three huge blisters which made it very difficult to walk. If it wasn’t for the support of my fellow walkers, I genuinely wouldn’t have made it.”

But make it they did, raising at least €2,100 overall for what Richard describes as a “fantastic cause.”

THERE are a sea of flags recognising quality and safety flying on Almeria’s beaches this summer.

The city’s coast boasts two ADEAC Environmental Education and Consumer Association blue flags, four Tourism Ministry Q flags for Quality, four of the Ministry’s new Safe Tourism certificates, one Accessibility flag and six ISO 9001 quality certificates.

The Safe Tourism certificates “reflect we are a safe destination for Almeria residents and tourists,” stressed Almeria mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco.

Speaking at the official raising of the flags last Thursday, the mayor also made reference to the agreement between the council’s City Promotion Department, the University of Almeria and the Torrecardenas hospital on analysing the provincial capital’s beaches and sand throughout the summer, the first round of analyses coming up negative.

“Every year we make an effort to improve our beaches, and this year we have thrown ourselves into safety, with the Beach Contingency Plan, and in accessibility,” the mayor commented.

Fernandez-Pacheco encouraged both locals and visitors to “enjoy our beaches and our city with happiness and at the same time with the corresponding health safety measures.”

Chinese doing their bit ALMERIA’S Chinese community has been doing its bit to support the ongoing efforts to contain the Covid-19 pandemic and keep everyone in the province safe from the virus.

Chinese businesses in Almeria City have donated 73,000 face masks to the city council, which will be distributed to local associations.

Almeria mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco said he was “eternally grateful” to the Chinese in the city.

“Since the beginning of the crisis, the Asian community has been in contact with the city hall because they wanted to help. Hence they set to work to acquire masks in markets that they know better than us to, between everything on which they have wanted to collaborate, buy these

73,000 masks,” the mayor revealed at the presentation of the donation on Saturday.

Fernandez-Pacheco explained the masks will go to the Red Cross and to the “most vulnerable” associations and collectives, “so that we all have masks to protect ourselves from Covid-19 and to protect others.”

He also pointed out that this is particularly important now that wearing a face mask in public spaces is compulsory in Andalucia.

Chinese business community representative Sonia Shi said they had wanted “to help the residents of this city which feels like ours, and which has always welcomed us so well, some have been here more than 20 years.”

Successful search GUARDIA CIVIL officers tracked down a man who went missing in the village of Hijate on July 16 after a 12-hour search operation.

The man’s wife contacted the authorities after her husband left home around 5am in what she said was a very altered state.

Concerns were heightened by the fact the missing man was undergoing medical treatment which can cause disorientation, the Guardia reported.

The search effort, on foot and by car, and supported by the Guardia air and canine services, ended at 5.30pm that afternoon when the man was eventually located over the Granada border in Cullar municipality.

He was disorientated and dehydrated.

“Back in the groove” NEIL DIAMOND sang about a ‘Hot August Night,’ but it was a hot July morning when community choir All Aloud got together for the first time since lockdown.

The singers met up at Chapman’s in Albox, choir member Gary Mitchell telling the Euro Weekly News it was an opportunity

to meet and greet old friends, as well as to sing.

“After careful consideration and perusal of the current regulations it had been worked out that if we met outside and observed social distancing then the opportunity was there to restart our stalled campaign,” Gary explained.

“Chapman’s kindly

agreed to reserve an outside area for us and to set up seats in a shaded part of the patio, two metres apart, and 20 of us got together to resume singing.

“Understandably perhaps, we were rusty and some of the timing was off.

But after a quick burst of some familiar numbers we were back in the groove!”

PRE-COVID: The choir before lockdown kept them apart.

The impromptu, al fresco entertainment clearly went down well with other customers as it quickly mor-

phed into a request session and the planned hour extended.

“All-in-all it was a thoroughly entertaining get-together and reminded us why we do it,” said Gary.

All Aloud had planned to hold another session towards the end of the month, but this is now on hold following the Junta de Andalucia’s imposition of a blanket regulation enforcing the wearing of face masks except in some circumstances.

Safe city

PLEASED: The city’s Promotion councillor described the recognitions as an “honour” for Almeria.

ALMERIA is the only destination in Spain to have gained the ICTE Spanish Institute for Tourism ‘Safe Tourism Certified’ recognition for all its tourist public spaces.

The city’s Doña Pakyta Art Museum, Espacio 2, the Guitar Museum, the Casa del Cine, the house of the poet Jose Angel Valente, the Arab baths, the heritage centre and the Civil War air raid shelters all have the certification. So too do the municipal Tourist Office and the municipal Alboran golf

course in the El Toyo district.

City council Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez described it as an “honour” for Almeria to be the first in the country to have the Safe Tourism distinctions for its public spaces.

“It means we are doing a good job in keeping our spaces as safe as possible for Almeria residents and for those who visit us,” the councillor remarked.

Four of the provincial capital’s beaches are also Safe Tourism Certified.

Police presence is beefed up

THE Local Police presence in Roquetas de Mar has been beefed up to watch out for compliance with Covid-19 prevention measures.

Roquetas mayor Gabriel Amat decided to establish a new Local Police brigade after the Junta de Andalucia announced it was making it compulsory to wear face masks in public places.

Amat explained the brigade operates in pairs.

The officers ensure the public are abiding by the regulations, focusing particularly on areas where

there are most people, like shopping areas, promenades and beaches.

They join the special services already operating this summer in Roquetas, especially in controlling illegal street vendors, boozy get-togethers of youngsters in public

places or any gatherings of crowds.

The mayor said it was a move which councillors from different political parties represented in the municipality had requested.

He also called on the public to exercise “caution and responsibility.”

Daily Sevilla rail connection returns RAIL company Renfe has reestablished the daily service between Almeria and Sevilla.

The ticket covers a connection with two trains: the medium-distance Almeria to Granada and an Avant train covering the GranadaCordoba-Sevilla leg of the journey.

The service departs from Almeria at 10.10am and arrives in Sevilla just before 4pm.

Coming the other way the train leaves the Andalucia capital’s Santa Justa station at 7.20pm, getting into the provincial capital at 0.55am.

Renfe is currently operating a daily connection each way between Almeria and Madrid and two connections in each direction a day between Almeria and Granada.

Red flag flouters NIJAR Local Police reported eight beachgoers last weekend who paid no attention to red flags indicating prohibitions on swimming in the sea due to rough conditions.

The bathers could now be hit with hefty fines.

The incidents occurred on the Las Negras, Isleta del Moro and Plazayo de Rodalquilar beaches in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

Nijar Council said the reported beachgoers were individuals who repeatedly ignored the warnings of lifeguards or Civil Protection, and who as a last resort called on the assistance of Local Police officers “with the aim of avoiding the dangerous situations seen in recent days which have led to cases of drowning or rescues of bathers due to serious recklessness despite the clear prohibition signs.”

POLICE saved a dog’s life just in the nick of time in El Ejido after a suspected drug dealer tossed it to other mutts for food.

Officers who had the property in Calle Colombia under surveillance decided to go in immediately based on the certainty an animal’s life was in danger.

The officers dashed through to the terrace and managed to stop six dogs considered dangerous breeds from devouring another to satisfy their desperate need for food.

The six dogs showed clear signs of malnutrition and were being kept in appalling conditions.

All the animals are now in the care of the SOS Adopta Animal Protection Society in Pechina.

When the officers burst in the 23-yearold owner, barefoot and just in his underwear, tried to make a run for it over roof tops, but he ended up surrounded by police.

He was charged with animal mistreatment. He also faces charges for crimes against public health and for defrauding the power supply.

The original investigation into the goings on at the property launched at the beginning of the month followed complaints from neighbours. They reported their suspicions it was being used as an indoor marihuana plantation and a drug sales point.

Police surveillance operations over several days and at different times indicated the suspicions were well-founded.

The raid on the house led to the seizure of marihuana, hashish, cocaine, ecstasy and 37 marihuana plants.

A court ordered the 23-year-old be held in prison.

The FAAM Almeria Federation of Associations for Disabled People has produced its 13th provincial Beach Accessibility Guide.

Published in Spanish, English, French and German on www.almeriaac cesible.es, the guide has objective descriptions on 40 accessible points set up by local councils in the 12 Almeria coastal municipalities.

Features of accessible points include allocated parking spaces for the disabled or the availability of adapted public transport, services like adapted showers and shaded areas, walkways between modules and information in braille for the visually impaired.

Rock legends SPANISH rock legends Los Secretos, Revolver and Mikel Erentxun are all lined up to play unplugged this summer in Almeria City’s Plaza de la Constitucion.

All three will be doing open-air acoustic sets of their greatest hits as part of Almeria City Council’s summer culture and entertainment programme.

Basque singer Mikel Erentxum will be appearing on July 24, Revolver on July 25 and Madrid band Los Secretos on August 19.

Members of the audience will all have pre-assigned chairs, with maximum capacity of 450. There will be strict health safety and hygiene measures in place. Wearing a face mask will be compulsory.

All the concerts start at 9.30pm. The council said people should get to the venue with plenty of time to allow for the correct access procedures.

Site manager Jose Antonio Moya described the works as “complex.”

He also explained that they were taking the opportunity to adapt the bridge to new regulations on seismic activity and vehicle contention.

Illegal hook-ups A POLICE investigation into a family clan illegally growing and selling marihuana saw a major blitz on illegal power supply hook-ups in Almeria City.

Around 50 police officers and technicians from the Endesa electricity company took part in ‘Operacion Tarifa,’ which ended in 18 arrests and in cutting off the electricity supply to 96 properties in the Cerro de San Cristobal district of the provincial capital.

Police first launched an investigation a year ago after it became apparent marihuana was being grown in a number of properties in the neighbourhood. Checking out goings on was a complicated process though.

Over the months the police uncovered a wellorganised family structure making a lot of money from growing and selling marihuana, each member with their own particular responsibilities.

As well as cutting off the

unauthorised power connections, the operation also resulted in the seizure of more than 3,500 cannabis plants, pistols and shotguns and €60,000 in cash.

Six of the detainees are being held in prison on charges including illegal gun ownership, defrauding the power supply, robbery and a crime against public health.

Mask rule enforcement SANCTIONS: Nijar Council warned that Local Police will start fining people not wearing face masks.

NIJAR Council made it clear it is doing what it can to put a stop to people flouting the compulsory face mask rule as one of the measures to control outbreaks of Covid-19 in the region.

The local authority warned on social media police will issue fines to anyone spotted out in a public place without a mask who has ignored previous warnings, in accordance with the Junta de Andalucia regulation which came into force on July 15.

Nijar mayor Esperanza Perez Felices said it was regrettable that the public have to be reminded to put on a face mask.

Becoming resident in Spain? Don’t overlook tax and financial planning With just months to go before the end of the Brexit transition period, many UK nationals are rushing to secure residency in Spain.

Those who are lawfully settled before 31st December 2020 can lock in a lifetime of citizens’ rights under the UK/EU Withdrawal Agreement.

Most people are focussed on getting into the Spanish system as quickly as possible. However, without careful planning, changing residency can have unexpected financial pitfalls, not least because residence in Spain makes you subject to Spanish tax and succession rules. It is also advisable to review your investments and pensions to ensure they are suitable for this new chapter of your life.

Taxation in Spain Establish when you become liable for Spanish tax on your worldwide income, gains, wealth and estate.

You are considered to be a tax resident if you spend more than 183 days in Spain during the Spanish

EU recovery fund: “a great agreement for Spain”

DELIGHTED: “There is no doubt that today is one of the most brilliant pages in the history of the European Union,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez enthused.

AFTER four days of intense and sometimes distinctly testy debate on a post-coronavirus recovery plan, the EUmember state leaders have finally reached what Spanish Prime Minister P e d ro Sanchez described as a “great agreement for

Spain and for Europe.”

Spain is set to do pretty well out of the €750 billion stimulus package.

The country will get €140 billion. This represents somewhere in the region of 11 per cent of Spain’s GDP. Of the total amount, €72,700 will be in the for m of direct assistance, a clearly pleased Sanchez commented at a press briefing in Brussels on Tuesday July 21 shortly after the deal was reached.

“There is no doubt that today is one of the most brilliant pages in the history of the European Union,” he enthused.

Sanchez highlighted the fact that in absolute ter ms Spain emerges with practically the same amount which was first proposed to the European Commission.

According to the Spanish Prime Minister it is “a genuine Marshall Plan,” which will not only allow Spain to deal with the economic crisis created by the pandemic, but also transformations the country will need to go through in the future.

Sanchez also said he believed the whole of the EU will benefit from the plan.

“Today all Europeans win and the European Union will come out much stronger,” he maintained.

Mortgage charge decision GOOD news for many home owners in Spain as the European Court of Justice has ruled that many charges made by banks in respect of the cost of arranging mortgages are abusive and must be stopped.

In theory therefore all those who paid such costs are due for refunds and future mortgage costs will in the main be for the banks to cover.

There is however one caveat and that is if national law requires the person taking the mortgage to pay the costs, then that is allowed.

Bank borrowing THE Bank of Spain has revealed that Spanish banks borrowed more than €196 billion from the European Central Bank in June which is an 11.6 per cent increase over May and is the highest level of borrowing since November 2013.

Fewer workers THERE were 649,000 fewer workers on UK payrolls between March and June of this year according to the UK Office for National Statistics and total weekly hours worked fell by a record 175.3 million due to the pandemic.

Accused of Impropriety AN organisation known as the Good Law Project has raised sufficient public funding to appoint a top firm of London barristers to take action against Michael Gove Minister for the Cabinet Office and Dominic Cummings Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister.

What is known as a pre­action proto­ col letter was sent to the pair alleging that there have been irregularities in the placing of government contracts with a small public relations company called Public First.

Put simply, the directors of the com­ pany are known to be friends of both

men and indeed they either worked with Cummings or for Gove in the past and they were awarded a contract worth £840,000 (€920,000) to under­ take research work on Covid­19.

According to the Guardian newspa­ per, government work is legally re­ quired to be put out for competitive tender to ensure the best qualified com­ pany is appointed, unless there are ex­ ceptional circumstances, such as an un­ foreseen emergency.

I am 80 years old and I have been declaring the annuity as lifetime at 8 per cent. But I think this is wrong.

A fixed­term annuity of 20 years pays tax on YOU AND THE LAW 25 per cent of the IN SPAIN yearly income. If you receive €20,000 each year from your fixed­term annuity, you will be taxed on €5,000. You declare this income in the invest­ ment part of the tax return. For investment income up to €6,000, the tax rate is 19 per cent, so this would draw tax of €950. However, you can deduct your personal minimo vital from your total income. If you are 80 years old, this reduction is €8,100. You can also apply this reduction to your Swedish pen­ sion income. You need a 2018 law book and a Spanish tax advi­ sor.

FINANCE, BUSINESS & LEGAL ATLANTIA, the Italian toll road compa­ ny which owns Spanish equivalent Abertis has been told by the Italian Government that if it wishes to contin­ ue to operate, it will need to give up an Italian subsidiary Autostrade.

To make matters worse however, offi­ cials of all of the unions who have staff working for Abertis in Spain have called for a series of strikes on the Spanish mo­ torways during July and August.

They argue that as Abertis is not en­ tering into new agreements concerning members’ employment rights and pay, they have no other course of action than to call out all 1,300 employees on strike.

The intention is to target four week­ ends at the height of summer where staff will not be collecting tolls on any road managed by Abertis which repre­ sents about half of all of the Spanish toll roads.

Nation of whingers

WHAT a sad nation of whingers the UK has become. Imagine trying to govern a bunch of people who do nothing but moan? To me Boris and Co have the most unenviable task o f t r y i n g t o re m a i n p o p u l a r a n d whip up enthusiasm from a population who seem to have almost lost the will to live; but then who can really blame them?

Over the years, the indigenous citizens have been swamped with illegal immigrants, torn apart with acts of terrorism, and watched their neighborhoods demolished and razed to the ground. They have experienced faceless skyscraper rehousing with different cultures they don’t understand and been consistently accused of racism. They have seen crimes of violence soar to record levels, observed the demise of free speech and all but lost their own identities.

With the country now being throttled by the coronavirus and surrounded by a whole host of ‘experts,’ who deliver up far more answers than questions, is it no wonder the people are desperately seeking out someone to blame? This week however, when the mayor of Leicester at-

tempted to pass the buck and blame the government for his local ‘slave labour’ factories which were deemed responsible for a new ‘spike’ in the Covid-19 pandemic, Boris, in a move that to me reeked of someone heartily sick of being blamed for just about everything, decided to turn over the whole responsibility of dealing with local outbreaks onto the councils themselves.

Brilliant. It’s about time both officials and

Twice I have visited South Africa. The first during apartheid and then some years later after it had been abolished. I remember, during my second visit, laughing to myself about one of the country’s new

directives suggesting that you should no longer request a white coffee but preferably ask for a coffee with milk. How ridiculous is that I thought? Thank God that could never happen in the UK. Wrong!

It now appears that some of these insecure trouble makers actually want the word white eliminated from just about everything, Whitehaven, Whitechurch, Snow White; the whole shebang. It doesn’t even end there. In the States they are actually campaigning to change the name of the White House.

And do you know something, with the help of the luvvies and appeasing political correct mob; they could one day quite possibly get their way. You honestly couldn’t make it up. No wonder the true British populace never stops moaning.

With the lily livered politicians and authorities frightened to do anything in case they ‘offend’ someone, moaning and griping is just about all they’ve have left!

I say for sure!

GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IT’S no secret that I like to part y. I n f a c t , I m a d e a c a r e e r out of it. Once upon a time, I was known to attend up to four or five parties per night, stopping by each to air-kiss and be photographed, before moving on to the next, with the help of my ever smiling, and patient chauffeur, Chris.

Usually landing in whatever nightclub was the hottest ticket in town, by 2am. I must say, it’s a time that remains pretty much a b l u r, b u t a l o n g t h e w a y I m a d e some great friends. An era that was certainly showered with way too many cocktails. Most times the only way to recall where I’d been and with whom, was to pick up magazines like Tatler, or read the social columns of newspapers.

As 2020 unfolded, I made a concious decision to get more sleep and stay away from the busy social scene of Marbella.

Little did I know, that the universe had a plan in place to ensure none of us could sip martinis a t s t y l i s h p a r t i e s . We w e r e u n able to even go to a local bar for a glass of wine. As I’ve said b e f o r e , w h i l e M a rc h r o l l e d i n t o April, and on to May, I stared at my diary and saw it filled with cancelled events and special occasions. The only for m of entertainment on offer - Netflix and chill. And I don’t mean the fun kind of chill, I mean stay home and accept it, while binge watching shows that did little to light my fire.

Anyhow, the first party I was able to attend post lockdown, was worth the wait. Famed interior designer, and my NBF, Nezha Kanouni, invited a select group of Marbella’s finest, to the opening of her latest store, on the Golden Mile. I’ve always been a lover of interior design, so to meet someone as cool, and terminally chic as Nehza was fantastic. Her taste is impeccable,

PARTY TIME: Catching up with old friends. and while I didn’t really have a chance to check out everything, due to great conversations with old friends and a whole lot of air-kissing, I have an appointment to retur n to select certain pieces for my home.

The party gave me the chance to meet some really great new friends from Marbella, as well as catching up with one of my oldest pals, the ever stunning and effervescent Virginia Macari.

We’ve been friends for too long to recall, but have been living our lives via WhatsApp for the last few months.

The party moved on to the super chic, Mamzel for supper and drinks. If you haven’t already visited this stunning venue nestled in the hills, I suggest you do so pronto. Nezha is responsible for the design of the restaurant, and it is of course, epic. A triumph! It’s the first time in months that I danced and laughed, and possibly drank too much wine.

But the slight headache the following morning was worth it.

A night that began with a Negroni at the Marbella Club and ended with a swim in my pool at 3am. It certainly feels more like the Marbella I’ve loved for many years.

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I HAVE an Amazon account with £100 credit on it. I don’t use the UK site much as if I need anything it’s cheaper to get it delivered from Amazon.es obviously. So I contacted them, which is no easy thing.

I’m going to go off at a tangent here.

Why is it so difficult to speak to anyone from any large company? It’s almost impossible these days. You get offered so many different ways to contact them.

The one that bugs me most is FAQ. Am I really the only person that wants to know about this problem? Then being asked did this help ... no it didn’t ‘cos you didn’t answer my question. Anyway, I did, after many attempts, get a response to my question which was can I transfer my £100 credit to Amazon.es.

After all, I sign in with the same email address and password so they know it’s me. They even email me to tell me I’ve logged on to another Amazon site. The answer was no you can’t, end of. I tried to contact them again to ask why, considering the size of the company and

the things they can do including have driverless cars, but I got no further response. Surely it’s not rocket science to let me use my 100 quid on any Amazon site I’m on.

I was very pleased that my daughter, Dr S, came to visit for a couple of weeks. When I collected her from the airport there was no cuddle and we both sat in the car with our masks on and for five or six days she didn’t even give her daddy a kiss. We had a fabulous couple of weeks and when she went home on Saturday, Mrs S made her a packed lunch as we were not sure if there would be food available at the airport or on the plane. In her lunch pack was a metal fork and there was a long discussion on the security implications and how would she eat it if they confiscated the ‘weapon.’ Anyway she boarded and sent us a text that noone at security was interested in her fork, but they did make her take off her sandals and I’m talking about wafer thin almost flip floppy type of things and x-ray them.

Nice to see that airport security hasn’t lost its priorities. I could understand if they were crocs. Anybody wearing them should be arrested immediately!

OUR VIEW Social U-turn

THE health crisis has brought with it many different and magnified social changes. As it began and we all faced a new experience of isolation. Locked in our houses away from the world and any chance of infection. During this time neighbours reached out to each other by congregating on their balconies at night to clap the efforts of the health service, groups were created to deliver food to the homeless or helpless and positive actions sprung from a great fear restoring some people’s faith in mankind.

We were all desperate to get out of our confines.

What happened? Over the last month, this has deteriorated.

Upon our release from captivity, things have descended into worldwide mania.

Rioting, murders, economic collapse and a U-turn into negativity. Facebook and Twitter are full of personal attacks and arguments with people who are really not educated enough in how to handle medical, human rights or economic matters.

Sure, we can all have an opinion but if we know that we ourselves do not know all the facts, shouldn’t we allow others to have theirs too.

The world is turning ugly. People are beginning to retreat back to their houses, why?

If they are to leave their houses they are to follow certain restrictions that make them uncomfortable, like wearing a mask, standing in queues two metres apart or not being able to enjoy other people’s company.

Maybe they will be caught in a riot, maybe somebody else will not be following health measures making them feel threatened.

Is there a happy medium? Should people be allowed to make their own choices?

The wearing of face masks is such an all-consuming topic just now but nobody has the power to challenge the government’s decision on the mandatory measures concerning these. WHO is sitting on the fence, even though their official statement shows that these masks can be more dangerous for certain members of the public.

The main thing we need to focus on is that we cannot get through this crisis alone. Together we are stronger. Tearing each other apart will not get us any further forward.

A time of global weakness is not the time to tackle all the world’s problems at once.

Remember, divided we stand, together we fall.

DEAR Euro Weekly, This most unfortunate tale started on Wednesday morning at about 09.15 when I rushed into Ferreteria Lopez on Mojacar beach for some urgent (it always is) plumbing stuff.

I was then confronted by a gent who, rightfully, but very gruffly, asked me ‘where is your face mask,’ which I had, in the rush, completely forgotten to wear, although it sits ready to use, on my car’s passenger seat.

‘I forgot’ I replied, which was then met with a stream of verbal abuse, followed by, it beggars belief, physically attacking me with a one-inch connector hose that he grabbed from the nearby display, all the while proclaiming he was ‘English.’

I raised my arm in defence, took two steps back, in trying to defuse the situation. I went for my face mask and finished my shopping, thoroughly shook up.

Beyond belief DEAR Euro Weekly, I live with a person (platonic) who is a Cuban transexual, born a man and known as Samanta she had her unemployment benefit stopped as her passport is out of date. Before she could renew, as not many unemployed have €215 to stay as a man or over €400 to change sex lying about, she suffered a serious life-threatening stroke culminating in three months in hospital. She has been home nine days and is wheelchair-bound, needs constant care and is now being refused both benefit and Cruz Roja food parcels as her padrón are out of date.

Add to this my incredible story of unemployment and lack of benefits, it is clear to me Spain is ignoring both European law and human rights. I am disgusted beyond belief at the treatment she has had but how can you send someone home with no medicine, no food or money in the house and not knowing if there was even anyone to help with basic needs, never mind a professional carer which she now gets for one hour a day Monday to Friday.

Cases Keep Climbing Spain Releases Latest Coronavirus Figures I personally thought when the Covid-19 virus was announced back in March and we were all told it had a 14-day incubation period it seemed the obvious thing to do would have been to make absolutely everyone with no exceptions go into a 21day complete lockdown and have military deliver food parcels utilising high safety standards and keeping streets clear and allowing no travel including flights, this way the virus would have burnt itself out, obviously this would only work if neighbouring countries followed suit too and it wouldn’t have gone on for so many months.

We Are The Creators Of Our Destiny

WHEN we were born into this world, we didn’t know the meaning of limitation. We didn’t understand the word fear or selfdoubt.

We never compared ourselves to others as we

were learning to walk. It didn’t matter how many times we fell, we would get back up and try again until we succeeded. Some of us would start to walk as early as nine months old, others took much longer but it didn’t matter. We didn’t care, we concentrated on ourselves.

Why do so many of us doubt our own abilities?

Why do we compare to others?

Why do we set limits in our life?

Why are some more confident than others?

It all boils down to our peers, how we were raised, and who we were surrounded by whilst growing up.

Limitation, self-doubt, procrastination, and a negative mindset is taught. You may have had an amazing upbringing with confident parents, however, an Uncle, Aunt, friend of the family may have been negative, may have installed fear into you unintentionally.

As children, our brains are like sponges. They absorb everything around us. If you see fear as a child, there is a higher chance that you will take that fear into adulthood. If, as an adult, you are surrounded by negative people, you too will become negative.

Fifi’s lifelong companion Bijou died just before Spain implemented its lockdown. After we adopted the pair they quickly settled in their new surroundings, and could be left on their own.

But after lockdown restrictions were eased Fifi began barking and howling the minute I left home, and I was compelled to buy the collar.
