HOTEL chains are getting ready to gradually reopen establishments in beach resorts and to welcome back tourists. In what is an anything but typical summer season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, somewhere between one in four and a third of the island’s hotels are expected to have their doors open, according to reports. This could gradually increase, as and when the number of flight connections, especially on international routes, goes up and demand grows. The imminent relaxation on non-essential overseas travel in the UK and allowing British holidaymakers to visit destinations like Spain without having to quarantine when they return could push bookings up further, Mallorca’s hotel sector hopes. As it stands, Melia Hotels International is opening the Palma Bay next to the island capital’s Congress Palace this week, and plans to open the Calvia Beach in Magaluf shortly. Another Melia establishment lined up to restart activities by the end of July is the company’s emblematic Hotel de Mar.

The firm is also preparing for the reopening of the Sol Cala d’Or in the southeast of the island. “Due to the archipelago’s greater dependence on international tourism and the uncertainty on how demand will develop in the summer months, the company’s commitment is firm: to open as many hotels as possible to reactivate employment and the destination,” the compa-

ny stated. Rui, which took part in the Balearics’ pilot tourism project with its Concordia and Bravo hotels, has scheduled the opening of two more establishments in July, while Mallorcabased company Iberostar opened the Cristina in Playa de Palma a couple of weeks ago, and plans further reopenings on the island shortly. No top night spots this year MALLORCA is facing a summer without some of the holiday island’s top nightspots. Star clubbing venues Titos and BCM Disco Empire in Palma, Megapark in S’Arenal and The Club in Playa del Palma will remain shut the entire season, the company behind all four establishments has announced. Grupo Cursach said it has been left with no choice but to keep the doors of the four establishments shut due to the restrictions established by the Balearic government on dance venues in the post-lockdown new normality, and the total prohibitions on opening in areas associated with extreme, booze-fuelled behaviour such as Magaluf and Playa de Palma. “Now is the time to look after yourself until this situation caused by Covid-19 passes,” the company posted on social media. “We’ll see each other in 2021!”, the post promises.

COMMEMORATION: Relatives, recovered patients, health professionals and members of the Balearic institutions remember the 226 who have lost their life to the virus in the archipelago. THE lighting of candles for each of the 226 people who have lost their life to Covid19 in the Balearic Islands since the start of the pandemic formed the focus of a moving tribute to the victims of the virus on Friday at the La Lonja in Palma. Relatives of the victims, patients who have overcome coronavirus and health professionals working on the frontline of the

battle against Covid-19 played the main part in the commemoration, which was attended by Balearic President Francina Armengol and members of the regional government, and the main representatives of Mallorca’s institutions and civil society. A commemorative plaque was unveiled in memory of all the victims, and relatives and patients offered a bouquet of flowers to representatives

of paramedics to thank them for their work. The homage to the Covid victims ended with a minute’s silence and a performance of ‘El Cant dels Ocells’ by Balearic Island Symphony Orchestra cellist Emmanuel Bleuse.

TENNIS ace Rafael Nadal is the star of a promo aimed at attracting tourists. The Mallorca-born celebrity sportsman provides the voiceover for the island government’s promotional video, which is aimed especially at the national visitor market. Over sweeping aerial shots of the island’s coastline, landscapes, capital city and natural wonders, Nadal tells viewers Mallorca has worked hard to get back to normal life “so that the strange thing is to be at home and not out there looking for freedom,” and so that “holidays are as ever: free time to disconnect and forget about everything.” The video is part of a Consell de Mallorca marketing campaign and packet of measures aimed at reactivating the tourism sector in the face of the coronavirus crisis. It is due to be broadcast at prime time on national TV from the first fortnight of July. Versions in Catalan, English, German and French will be put out on social media.

Andalucia has registered several important blazes in just the last 10 days, one fire in mountains just behind popular Costa Almeria holiday resort Mojacar burning its way through nearly more than 180 hectares in less than 24 hours. And as hot air from the Sahara pushes up temperatures this week, and weather forecasters predict another heatwave will start sweeping across much of the south and centre of the country by the weekend, already tinder dry conditions in much of the country mean wildfires are a real risk. Just the smallest spark at this time of year can set off a fire which in no time at all is blazing out of control. It could be a natural phenom-

enon like lightning which ignites undergrowth, but in many cases it is mankind’s actions which are the cause.

In the same way that society is doing its bit to prevent a risk of Covid-19 infections, so too can common sense and a feeling of responsibili-

ty towards others help reduce the likelihood of wildfires breaking out, and the potential threat to lives and property.

For example: • Avoid smoking in forests or countryside. •Don’t throw cigarette butts out a car window onto the roadside. • Don’t burn rubbish. • Don’t leave or toss flammable materials onto outside ground. • If you light a campfire make sure it is well away from trees, grass and leaves and prevent sparks from flying out and triggering a fire. •When putting out a campfire make sure it is totally extinguished and cover the area around the fire with earth or stones. • Don’t leave any rubbish lying around in the countryside. • Don’t let off fireworks or firecrackers near areas which could catch light. • Don’t have outdoor barbecues in in the countryside.

‘Safe tourism’ first Royals chat with

CERTIFICATION: An independent company carried out the audit to check the port’s compliance with regulations. CALVIA’S Port Adriano has become the first in Mallorca to gain the ‘Safe Tourism’ distinction. The ICTE Spanish Tourism Quality Institute stamp certifies the correct implementation of Covid-19 health safety protection measures. In order to obtain the certificate Port Adriano had to adapt its protocols to the guidelines set out in the Spanish UNE 0066-15 Measures for the reduction of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus

contagion regulation specifically for nauticalsports facilities and nautical sports. Specific actions have included modifying or creating hygiene and safety protocols for different departments, controlling entries to and limiting capacity in key areas, specific internal training on Covid19 and the use of personal protection equipment, increasing the frequency of cleaning in communal

zones, and putting up informative signs. Independent company SGS, a leading inspection, verification, analysis and certification firm, carried out the audit, which checked the port’s compliance with the specifications established in the regulation. The idea of the ‘Safe Tourism’ initiative is to put out the concept of safe, certified tourism in an area committed and adapted to the new Covid-19 risk reality.

German couple SPAIN’S King and Queen have personally thanked German tourists for visiting Mallorca. King Felipe and Queen Letizia stopped for a chat with a German couple staying in the Rui Concordia hotel in Palma beach resort Arenal on Thursday June 25 during a tour of the establishment to find out about the protocols and measures implemented to protect against Covid-19. The Rui Concordia was one of the hotels which took part in the previous week’s pilot tourism project, under which German

tourists flew to Mallorca and Ibiza on socalled ‘safe travel corridors’ from several German airports before Spain’s international borders were reopened to Schengen area nations and the UK. Speaking in English, the Royals expressed their gratitude to the couple from Cologne for choosing to stay on the island. The King and Queen asked the German hotel guests when they had arrived and how long they were staying, and were interested to know how they felt about being in Mallorca.

Wave of immigrants GUARDIA CIVIL arrested 57 illegal immigrants on small boats on Monday June 29. The alert was first raised early in the morning when the SIVE surveillance system detected a small craft to the west of Cabrera. The Government Delegation in the Balearics reported the Guardia Civil’s Maritime Service was mobilised. They found the boat with 13 immigrants on board. Around the same time the Guardia came across another boat which had already reached

the shore close to Estanys beach in Colonia de Sant Jordi in Ses Salines. Then a short time time later two small boats were spotted drifting a few miles out at sea from the Ses Salines lighthouse and Es Caragol beach. The Guardia detained 27 immigrants, handing them over to National Police. Meanwhile, the authorities found a fifth boat, empty, around the Migjorn i sa Mola area. A search for the occupants left to 17 arrests.

You may choose to exchange your current certificate for a TIE in due course, but it is not obligatory. “We will update this post with further information as soon as it is available.”

The first train left Soller station at 9am on Thursday June 25 with some 40 passengers on board, most of them employees, guests and press. Soller Railway President Oscar Mayol went along for the ride. He took the opportunity to underline the importance of reactivating Mallorca’s complementary tourist offer to help reactivate the sector and the island’s economy. On the train’s way back from the island capital it had around 30 passengers, many of them German tourists. The train is making one morning and one afternoon return run a

Stay in THE preference of many Spaniards to holiday in Spain this summer due to concerns over Covid-19 is good news for the ferry company operating services between Costa Blanca port Denia and Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Balearia president Adolfo Utor reported demand for the six daily connections between the two mainland ports and Ibiza, Mallorca and Formentera is good. “We are optimistic about the Balearic routes,” he said. “Tourism this summer will be mainly national, and that will benefit us.” Balearia is currently running a daily service from Denia to Ibiza and Palma with the Cecilia Payne fast ferry, which is reinforced at the weekends by the ferry Bahama Mama, and 11 weekly connections to Formentera. From Valencia there are two ferries a day to Mallorca, one which goes directly to Palma, and one which makes a stop in Ibiza.

Mallorca Helping hand routes first AMID the doom and gloom for the coronavirus crisis-hammered air travel industry comes the news that Swiss startup airline FlyBAIR is launching next month with two flights to Mallorca. The airline’s inaugural services will take off on July 18 from Bern and Sion in Switzerland. More routes will be

added over the coming months, beginning with Greek holiday islands Rhodes and Crete in August, and followed in September by Andalucia city Jerez and Menorca, and Kos and Preveza in Greece. Bern-based FlyBAIR had been due to take to the skies in May, but the Covid-19 crisis put back the launch two months.

SELF-EMPLOYED in Calvia who have been hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis are set to get a financial helping hand. The local mayor Alfonso Rodreguez Badal and the Balearic Island regional Economic Model, Tourism and Employment minister Iago Negueruela have signed an agreement on providing exceptional financial assistance to the significant number of Calvia residents who work for themselves. More than €2 million is available in all, of which the local administration is contributing €1.5 million, the Balearic government just under €445,000 and the Mallorca island administration a further €150,000. The money is being directed at helping the self-employed to get their work and business activities back up and running. It is available for people who norm a l l y w o r k a l l y e a r, b u t w h o were forced to halt their activities due to the lockdown, and

Skate park up and running THE Calvia skate park is up and running again following a whole series of improvements. The Galatzo park officially reopened its doors on Saturday June 27, with exhibitions of skateboarders, roller skaters, scooters and bikers, as well as young musical talents, to get activities off to a start. Calvia mayor Alfonso Rodriguez, Mallorca island council Participation and Youth director Alex Segura, and several members of Calvia Council were there for the event, which also featured a youth information point, a badge workshop and a point for the ‘No i Punt’ campaign against sexual aggression. Works on the park have consisted of the upgrade and extension of the existing skate areas into a total space of 1,500 square metres. In addition, new lighting has been installed and there is now a second entrance to the site. The total cost of the works was just short of €290,000.

OPPORTUNITY: The Guardia believe the youngsters broke into the friend’s house one night knowing no one would be there. SO much for friends. Guardia Civil have arrested six youngsters for stealing more than €10,000 in jewellery, watches and clothes from a friend’s house. The group have also been charged with doing more than €2,000 worth of damage during the break-in at the property in Marratxi. One of them had reportedly found out the family house of a close friend would be empty one night and the youngsters decided to take advantage of there being no one there to do the place over. At around 2am they forced open the back doors to get in and grabbed the valuables. Pont d’Inca Guardia Civil identified the group as possible suspects, and that they were selling what had been taken at knockdown prices. The Guardia has recovered some of the stolen items and returned them to the rightful owners.

THE ban on the opening of nightclubs and discos in the Balearics due to concerns over Covid-19 infections is pushing Mallorca revellers to go to illegal parties instead, according to the islands’ nightlife sector. The ABONE Balearic Nightlife Association president Jesus Sanchez says the fact so many clubs and discos are not allowed to open has led to a growing number of unlicensed premises and private homes acting as venues for fiestas and chill-out sessions. Despite the State of Alarm coming to an end, the Balearic government has banned from opening their doors all nightclubs in Magaluf and Playa de Palma, as well

The Cathedral is open for visits from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2.15pm. The art museum’s opening times are Monday to Friday from 10am to 1.30pm.

MALLORCA’S impressive Cathedral has reopened its doors to tourists for the first time since it was forced to close to the public at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Services have been held since May 11 and the easing of lockdown restrictions, but visits began once more. The Museum of Sacred Art has also reopened. The coronavirus health threat means a number of changes have been implemented. Maximum visitor capacity is limited to 75 per cent, in line with Industry, Trade and Tourism recommendations.

SUPRISED: The thief skedaddled when the property owner woke up and realised there was an intruder in her home. POLICE in Palma arrested a suspected thief after the house break-in victim recognised him out on the street. The property owner told

police she had been at home asleep on Saturday evening June 27, when at around 10pm a noise woke her up and she realised there was an intruder inside with her partner’s wallet in his hand. Surprised, the thief skedaddled. The next day the woman spied the man she believed had got inside her home and called the police. After identifying the 52year-old and following witness declarations, he was charged with breaking and entering.

Testing technology TECHNOLOGY for controlling maximum beach-goer capacity in the Balearic Islands is being tested out in Palma. Two intelligent sensors continuously checking data on the number of people have been put up on the Ciutat Jardi beach. The system provides real time information on the density of beach-goers in a given space. The Balearic Island Internet of Things (loTIB) communication channel transmits numerical data, not images, to the regional IBETEC Te l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s and Innovation public entity, from where alerts will be issued to the competent authority if maximum beach capacity is exceeded. The idea is to allow for quicker action in

How is annuity taxed? In his book You and the Law in Spain for 2011 David Searl notes that both lifetime and fixed­term annuities have tax reductions. They must be declared in the investment part of the tax form. I have a Swedish an­ nuity with a fixed time of 20 years. I am 80 years old and I have been declaring the annuity as lifetime at 8 per cent. But I think this is wrong. What percentage of the yearly amount should be declared? H G (by email) A fixed­ term annu­ ity of 20 years pays YOU AND THE LAW tax on 25 per cent IN SPAIN of the yearly in­ come. If you receive €20,000 each year from your fixed­ term annuity, you will be taxed on €5,000. You declare this income in the investment part of the tax return. For investment income up to €6,000, the tax rate is 19 per cent, so this would draw tax of €950. However, you can deduct your personal minimo vital from your total in­ come. If you are 80 years old, this reduction is €8,100. You can also apply this reduction to your Swedish pen­ sion income. You need a 2018 law book and a Spanish tax advisor.

Chlorinated chicken

THERE are suggestions that in or­ der to secure a trade deal with the USA that the British Govern­ ment will reverse the decision not to allow imports of chlorinated chicken and hormone­injected beef. Trade Secretary Liz Truss hasn’t denied this but did tell MPs that food standards will not be lowered to secure new deals. In the meantime, a National Farm­ ers Union petition calling for the ban of these products has attract­ ed more than one million signa­ tures and the new CEO of Wait­ rose has said it won’t stock them.

During this time, we’ve seen GBP/EUR slump from 1.11 to 1.09 and EUR/GBP climb to 0.91. Meanwhile, GBP/USD has plunged from 1.25 to 1.22, whilst EUR/USD has traded between $1.11 and $1.13. What’s been happening? Fresh coronavirus outbreaks in countries like China and Germany, as well as a startling spike in cases in the US, has rocked currency markets through the second half of June, amid fears of a second wave of infections.

Second wave fears drive volatility in currency markets

VOLATILE: Amidst growing concerns of a coronavirus resurgence. This has been particularly damag­ ing for the pound. The currency has had to content with Brexit concerns and the Bank of England’s announce­ ment of more stimulus while growing increasingly sensitive to market senti­ ment. Despite the rise in coronavirus cas­ es setting back plans to reopen the US

economy, the US dollar has actually strengthened over the last two weeks as second wave fears have kept the safe­haven currency in strong de­ mand. Meanwhile, the euro has fluctuat­ ed in recent weeks, with Europe’s sol­ id progress towards eradicating the coronavirus being offset by the EU’s

failure to reach an agreement on a re­ covery fund as well as the threat of a transatlantic trade war. What do you need to look out for? Looking ahead, it’s likely the pound will remain on the back foot going for­ ward so long as Brexit progress re­ mains limited and the UK’s coron­ avirus figures remain elevated. Only a few weeks ago PM Boris Johnson had expressed confidence that a deal could be reached by the end of July, but that optimism isn’t shared by many. If the number of UK coronavirus in­ fections continue spiking in specific regions, the prospect of lockdown re­ strictions being reintroduced could weigh on GBP exchange rates. For EUR investors the focus at the start of July will be whether EU lead­ ers are able to agree on the terms of the coronavirus relief fund, with fur­

ther delays likely to undermine the single currency. The next ECB gathering will also be of interest, as will growth and output figures for the Eurozone’s largest economies. Finally, with coronavirus concerns continuing to weigh on market senti­ ment it’s likely we will see the US dol­ lar remain well supported over the coming weeks, although any gains could be tempered as political risks begin to grow. A very serious situation

IT strikes me that most of the the illegal street parties that are being held across the UK’s cities are not being staged as any celebration or gathering of people in pursuit of innocent fun. They are far more sinister than that. These are, particularly in London, mobs of young, predominately black lawbreakers, cocking an arrogant snook at authorities and intentionally flouting the rules to antagonise and provoke the police into more violent confrontation. It will therefore come as no surprise to me to subsequently hear the usual accusations levelled against the police of using ‘unnecessary force’ or the ‘heavy handedness’ we have come to expect. At the time of writing, 120 police have already been injured at these ‘gatherings.’ I can only assume that as yet no ‘innocent party-goers’ have been hurt or you can be rest assured the outcry would have been heard across the nation. This is of course exactly what these shadowy ‘party’ organisers want. They want these events to be the catalyst for the continuation and escalation of their war against the authorities and an excuse to ultimately disrupt and tear asun-

If the authorities don’t stop pussy footing around and appeasing those who condone and encourage this revolutionary racial violence, the streets of Britain’s great cities will begin to resemble the Beirut I warned about 30 years ago - and we will also witness the holocaust that a certain politician, far more intelligent and visionary than I prophesised even more years before that!

Talk about dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t. The British government is set up like ducks in a fairground shooting gallery, and don’t the lefty media love having a ‘pop.’ It’s really very simple; let the government make a decision and then oppose it! ‘The government wants to set up three-metre distancing.’ Media. ‘We think this is overreacting.’ ‘The government has reduced distancing to one metre.’ Media. ‘This is dangerous and irresponsible.’ ‘The gov-

ernment is imposing total lockdown.’ Media. This is overkill and unnecessary.’ ‘The government wants to reopen some services and ease the lockdown.’ Media. ‘It’s too soon.’ Etc. etc. If you get my drift! The next move is to make sure their main interviewees are opposed to whatever subject they wish to demean, which gives the impression that the majority of the ‘experts’ disagree with the government policies. This results in the viewer beginning to think that the opinions and anti-government rhetoric being constantly aired must be supported by the majority. Although they may disagree, they then begin to doubt their own political beliefs. This is known as brain washing, pure and simple. Well, much to the main Media’s arrogant surprise, these methods didn’t work during the last elections. If they continue to underestimate the public intelligence in their efforts to undermine this government and rebuild their precious Labour party - they won’t work this time either. joy in the south, in a responsible way adhering to the new conditions. We must change the mindset and be aware that the coronavirus has come to stay for a time, until an effective vaccine is found, so in the meantime, responsibly applying hygiene and social distancing mea-

If we achieve that, for residents and tourists, we will continue to be one of the best places where we can spend our holidays, or living here in Spain because it is a privilege to enjoy our mild and bright winters or the summer holidays where freedom replaces the clock that marks the schedules. If all together we can make it possible we will continue enjoying our paradise, simply by wearing a mask, washing your hands and maintaining the social distance of 1.5 metres, never before in the history of humanity, has such a serious problem had such an affordable solution. Let’s be responsible and enjoy the summer that has just begun.

How can I encourage someone to get help? You can try to help someone by encouraging them to get help from their doctor, a GP can give treatment for

some symptoms of mental health conditions. Or they can refer your relative to a psychiatrist. They might not want to visit their GP. They may not think they are unwell, not realise a GP can help, understand they need help but feel too embarrassed or frightened to talk to a doctor. Speaking to a professional and opening up about how you are feeling can be quite a scary situation. There are some things you could tell the person you’re worried about. • You can go with them to a doctor’s appointment to support them if they don’t want to go alone. • Many mental health problems can be treated. They might be worried they will have to go to hospital. • GP notes are confidential. This means the doctor can’t share information with anyone else unless they agree to it. The GP may have to share information with others if they feel someone is at risk of harming themselves. Y o u , yourself, m a y w o r r y that you aren’t doi n g enough to help them but believe me, offering emotional support is really valuable. Listen to them, offer them reassurance, stay calm, be patient, do not make assumptions. Write to me your thoughts or any tips you may have experienced when helping someone through difficult times.

DEAR Euro Weekly, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made an excellent job with the coronavirus outbreak but he certainly has not thoroughly thought through the idea of scrapping 10-year-old cars. It may be a good idea for cities and large towns with their higher income and excellent bus service for those unable to replace their vehicle, but that is not the case for everyone nationwide. Has he taken into account the fact that a lot of people in villages and satellite urbanisations do not have that kind of service and are still recovering financially, being on lower incomes, from last September storms. IN the street you can trust yourself to wear a mask, cross the road, go back indoors if people refuse to follow social distancing measures, but what do you do if you are stuck in a 130ft long metal tube going at 575 mph through the sky? There’s nowhere to run. As the first passengers step off flights both in the UK and in Spain there seem to be different sides of the story. One gentleman spoke of no checks on the UK side and a free for all on board the plane where passengers were not allowed to space out and chose to remove masks when they settled in. Another traveller tells of flying into Stansted on a flight where passengers were spaced out, wearing masks and temperature checked upon arrival. Both were with the same low-cost airline…Ryanair. With many people who have been stuck in Spain waiting to see their family for the first time in months and sun worshippers with sights set on the coastal beaches, we would hope EVERY single flight would follow a strict protocol to ensure the safety in both countries and the stop of any spread of infection. So, what is the excuse? Laziness? Or maybe lack of training for staff? If you board a flight and passengers are not following measures you know are strictly important who can you turn to? The passengers themselves may not listen to reason (people don’t often take kindly to being told what to do), the air staff would hopefully be the main choice and keeping an eye on this as a priority or will we see frustrated captains turning back? For your own peace of mind always remember to look after number one, flights are never really the healthiest of places anyway so, keep your mask on, wear gloves, use hand sanitiser and try as best you can to keep your distance. Wash those travelling clothes as soon as you can. But remember it still continues when you hit the ground, for now, let’s all stay safe.

FORMER neighbour Gertrude - well into her eighties and with a voice like a wood shredder due to a lifetime of heavy smoking - stunned me a few years back by asking ‘Where can I buy cigs that won’t damage my health?’ She’d just been out to buy 40 Marlboros and was horrified to notice that her favourite brand now bore grisley health war nings. She’d slung them back at the assistant, saying she didn’t want cigarettes that were dangerous, and could she please have the old ones that were safe. I explained to Gertrude that cigarettes had always posed a health threat, but it was only in 2008 that the UK government insisted that graphic warnings be put on the packets.

HEALTH HAZARD: Medicated cigarettes used to be endorsed. ‘Bullpucky,’ she wheezed. Then, after a lengthy coughing fit, added ‘I can remember the days when doctors recommended smoking, and even prescribed them for asthma sufferers.’ While I did recall seeing vin-

tage ads depicting doctors and dentists endorsing various brands I thought Gertrude’s fags-for-asthmatics claim was pure fantasy. Boy, was I ever wrong! I fact-checked her claim and found an article in the US

National Library of Medicine that infor med me that ‘throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the inhalation of fumes from burning preparations of stramonium, lobelia, tobacco, and potash became increasingly popular amongst asthmatics and their physicians throughout the world.’ One renowned asthma sufferer was French novelist Marcel Proust, who, after trying a variety of cures and even changing his diet, could get no relief - until he began smoking asthma cigarettes. So delighted was he that in 1901 he wrote to his mum to say he’d finally found something that actually worked. The article went on to say ‘it is interesting to reflect that until the 20th century doctors paid little attention to smoking as a health hazard, prefer-

ring instead to emphasise the perceived health benefits of tobacco and other inhaled substances, and that medicated cigarettes marketed for respiratory complaints continued to be endorsed, and smoked, by doctors until well after the Second World War.’ When I was 21, after having had my tonsils removed by a leading South African ear, nose and throat specialist, the first thing I did after regaining consciousness was to light a Lucky Strike. But I hurriedly stubbed it out when I saw the surgeon enter the ward. ‘No need to do that, dear boy’ he said, ‘smoking is great for the throat. Do you mind if I have one of yours?’ A couple of years later lung cancer ushered him into an early grave and I gave up the habit - until vaping came along.

ARSENAL announced yesterday, July 1 that they have tied Bukayo Saka down to a long-term contract with the club in what is being rumoured as a four-year deal. Saka has so far made 33 appearances this season, playing mainly down the left flank and has contributed three goals as well as 11 assists. The 18-year-old, who came through the club’s academy, has made a major impact during the current season after making his debut in the Europa League in 2018. “Bukayo is a talented and intelligent young player,” head coach Mikel Arteta told the club’s website.

TEEN STAR: Signed a long term conract. “He has impressed me with his work ethic and attitude to learn and adapt, and it has paid off in his performances. “I am excited to continue working with him to develop him further, and for him to help us
