It looks as though there will be help in this respect from Valencia’s regional government, as Generalitat presi-

dent Ximo Puig has promised two tourism incentive programmes to boost demand during the low season.

The first will cover the period between October 1 and December 15 and the second will start after the Christmas holidays on January 7, continuing until Easter.

Meanwhile, Benidorm Town Hall released figures regarding occupation of its beaches, which were visited by 30,190 during the first week, shooting up to 79,622 during the second.

“In just one week we have almost tripled the number of beachgoers, with days when there were more than 10,000 people on our beaches,” said Benidorm’s satisfied mayor, Toni Perez.

LA NUCIA Town Hall has ceded a 600-square metre of land to the municipal Animal Shelter.

The totally enclosed area, which adjoins the main installation, will be divided by a two-metre wall into a zone where potentially dangerous breeds (PPPs) can run and play and another with a six-square metre pool for the dogs. This is the Shelter’s 10th extension since it opened in 2016 and the €18,000 cost will be met by the Sociedad Protectora de Animales and the town hall, plus various anonymous donations.

The two zones are to have trees, bushes and pergolas as well as benches for the volunteers who accompany the dogs. Both can be accessed individually from the Shelter.

“Once again we are demonstrating our commitment to animal protection with our actions,” said La Nucia’s mayor Bernabe Cano.

CAMPELLO Council voted in favour of hanging the rainbow flag from the town hall’s balcony to commemorate Gay Pride Day on June 28.

The Compromis and Unidas Podemos motion had the backing of all parties except far-right Vox. Equality councillor Merce Pairo (Ciudadanos) emphasised the town hall’s “strong commitment” and defence of LGTB rights, citing the Spanish Constitution as the “maximum

guarantor” of equality.

“Unfortunately many people suffer the scourge of discrimination and we should teach equality and tolerance, so they can develop fully in all aspects of their lives,” Pairo declared.

The councillor’s sentiments were echoed throughout the Costa Blanca where the rainbow flag was present on practically all town hall balconies.

Javea declared itself ‘Proudly diverse’ while Denia condemned LGTB-phobia and

pledged to use every means of eradicating this ‘social menace.’

Villajoyosa celebrated a day early with a manifesto read out in the Barbera dels Aragones gardens and the official presentation of the new LGTB association Vila-diversitat.

Benitachell, celebrating Gay Pride Day for the first time, asked the local population to display the LGTB flag on their own balconies.

Fire planning out EIGHTY-SEVEN PER CENT of Valencian Community municipalities have yet to produce their Local Forest-Fire Prevention Plan (PLIPF).

These plans are obligatory, the Public Prosecution Department’s Environment section reminded them two years.

Of the 525 town halls required to produce a PLIPF, 17 are ex-

Andalucia has registered several important blazes in just the last 10 days, one fire in mountains just behind popular Costa Almeria holiday resort Mojacar burning its way through nearly more than 180 hectares in less than 24 hours.

And as hot air from the Sahara pushes up temperatures this week, and weather forecasters predict another heatwave will start sweeping across much of the south and centre of the country by the weekend, already tinder dry conditions in much of the country mean wildfires are a real risk.

The Covid-19 pandemic halted performances and the hours of rehearsal necessary to achieve the teamwork necessary to form the towers. Physical contact is inevitable to form muixerangues like those of Algemesi and Torrent (Valencia) and association members are resigned to postponing practices and any events.

“We shall have to remain inactive for as long as social distancing is required,” admitted Enric Rorribeles, president of the Coordinadora de Muixerangues.

• Don’t let off fireworks or firecrackers near areas which could catch light.

• Don’t have outdoor barbecues in in the countryside.

Two Bluefin tuna poachers nabbed TWO non-professional fishermen face fines for fishing bluefin tuna without a permit.

Both were surprised by officers from the Guardia Civil’s Maritime unit when one was off the Javea coast and the other off Denia.

The Denia angler did not possess authorisation to fish tuna or any other class of fish, leaving him open to a fine of between €5,000 and €10,000, the Guardia Civil revealed.

The open season for bluefin tuna began on June 16 and to fish them legally it is necessary to possess authorisation from the Ministry of the Environment and catches are limited to two per boat.

Once landed, it is necessary to notify the Fishing General Secretariat but some anglers fail to do so, in order to continue fishing.

Tiny mountain municipality leads the way CONFRIDES-L’ABDET Town Hall is offering rapid coronavirus antibody tests to all registered residents.

The two mountain villages not far from Guadalest share the same town hall and local mayor Ruben Pico revealed that 100 people, himself included, have already been tested to discover whether or not they have had Covid-19.

“A lot of people say they suspect that they have had the virus while others claim there have been no cases here at all. This way we can tell,” Pico said.

Roughly 250 people are registered on the Confrides-l’Abdet Padron and to date it is the only municipality in Alicante province to provide this service for all its residents.

Nor was the Covid-19 testing a first as the

town hall was also the first to distribute fac masks and gloves to the local population.

The anti-body tests are not obligatory, Pico stressed, although they were recommendable.

“This way we can discover the incidence and scope of the pandemic, making us safer and with more control over Covid-19,” the mayor said.

Take a bus to the beach

BENISSA Town Hall is again providing its free Benibus service between the centre and the beaches.

The circular route leaves Avenida Pais Valencia (Molins) at 10am, 12.30pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8.30pm and 12.30am. It returns from Playa Fustera at 10.40am, 1.10pm, 4.40pm, 8.40pm, 9.10pm and 1.40am.

This extends the previous years’ timetable, giving more time for dining and other late-night summer activities, Benissa’s mayor Arturo Poquet explained.

It was important to continue this service introduced by the present town hall’s predecessors. “It has functioned perfectly although we have introduced some changes to improve the service.”

Poquet reminded Benibus passengers to follow the required health and safety measures which include a hand-sanitiser dispenser and the need to wear a face mask as well as a t-shirt.

The bus is also disinfected each time during the 10-minute interval before its turnaround in the town centre and the beach.

THIS week, Giving4Giving presented its first donations to local charities since lockdown.

The charity made two €1,000 donations to Corazon Express and Anemona.

Corazon helps local families that are in need and Anemona is a breast cancer charity based in Benidorm.

When lockdown began, Giving4Giving feared for its future but Gary, the man behind it, was determined not to give in without a fight.

Six long weeks later, the charity has cleared all its

debts and is now doing what it does best, helping less fortunate people and charities on the Costa Blanca.

With these latest donations, they have now donated a total €167,000 and they can’t wait to carry on the good work in July.

“Over the last few weeks the public have been so generous with donations, so a special thank you to you all and to everyone who comes to the shops,” Gary said.

Bikers damage mountain LA SAFOR environmentalist group Corresendes de Xeresa complained that motocross and quad bikes are damaging mountain paths.

The Generalitat, responsible for the region’s mountain areas, bans all quads while motocross activities are not allowed on paths that are less than four metres wide.

When motorcycles are allowed, these are subject to extremely low speed limits to avoid dislodging stones or soil and they are supposed to be fitted with special tyres.

The Generalitat’s forest rangers have confirmed that there is an ongoing problem but explained that the few complaints they receive are not proportionate to the number of motorbikes and quads using and damaging the paths.

FINESTRAT Town Hall’s Youth department is organising open-air painting competitions on July 11, September 11 and September 12.

They are aimed at the 14 to 35 age group and on each of the three days the young painters will be able to choose as their subject the Plaza de la Union Europea in Finestrat’s Old Town or the Plaza that occupies the site of the old Edificio Anfora in La Cala.

“We are convinced that there is a great deal of artistic talent in Finestrat and we want our young people to enjoy an afternoon and evening that will be very different and good fun,” said Youth councillor Nati Algado.

The sessions will be held between 6.30pm and 9.30pm on each of the three days.

ALICANTE is distributing free protective masks for those over 65 until Friday July 3.

The City Council will be giving out packs of four masks every day until Friday, from 10am to 1pm, at nine of the city’s senior and community centres.

According to a spokesperson for the council, the initiative received ‘a great reception’ in its first day on Monday, June 29.

Recipients can visit any one of the centres below, with proof of residence. To collect on behalf of someone else, a photocopy of proof of residence and signed authorisation from the holder will be required.

Flying again NORWEGIAN AIRLINES has resumed its flight programming from Scandinavian countries to Alicante The airline has 76 connections from Scandinavian countries to Europe, 14 of which fly to Spain.

Own beach assistants THE town hall of Calpe has approved an emergency contract for 15 people to control beach-capacity and check social distancing. The €188,074 service will be provided for three months by lifesaving concessionary Eulen, the town hall announced.

Plans made at the beginning of June to engage personnel to ensure that beaches complied with Covid-19 prevention measures were dropped after the regional government announced its Beach Assistants scheme.

Calpe was initially allocated 24 assistants to check beach capacity while providing beachgoers with health and

safety information.

According to municipal sources it was soon agreed that the Generalitat plan was unviable as the Valencian Security and Emergency Response Agency (AVSRE) revealed that the personnel would be shared by several localities.

There would be no fixed number of assistants, nor would teams always be composed of the same people, Calpe Town Hall discovered.

Instead it decided to spend and take on take on another 15 people who for the next three months will ensure continuity while coordinate with the Generalitat’s Beach Assistants.

Building blocks ALICANTE Province’s construction sector provided employment for 7,000 people during the lockdown de-escalation period in April and May, despite the forced halt to all non-essential activities over Easter and delayed deliveries of building supplies. Alicante Province came seventh in job creation after Madrid, Sevilla, Barcelona, Malaga, Cadiz and Valencia.

FIVE seasoned stalwarts from U3A Calpe gathered recently to renew acquaintances and utter wise thoughts.

They were celebrating the return of the Men’s Dining Group at a restaurant on the promenade and as they hadn’t met for several months, they had lots to tell about their survival techniques under lockdown. Unsurprisingly, there were no lapses or paus-

es in the conversation.

They have decided to meet again on the last Thursday in July although normally the Men’s Dining Group restarts after the summer break, but this year is different and they hope to have a good turnout later this month.

They haven’t exhausted their interesting conversation topics and said they are looking forward to the next meet-

ing where they intend to enjoy a libation, good food at reasonable prices and amenable company.

Starting Ospreys back on the marsh up again AFTER the long lockdown closure and then a flood, the Charity Shop of Calpe can welcome back shoppers today, Thursday July 2.

Throughout this month the shop will open three days a week - on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays - from 10am to 1pm.

“Now that that weather has finally warmed up, come and see us. There are plenty of paperbacks to while away long lazy afternoons as well as summer fashions and accessories,” the Charity Shop said.

“We are following all the safety directives issued by the town hall, so you can shop with confidence. We look forward to seeing all our regular customers, and hopefully a few new faces.”

THREE young ospreys were recently introduced to the Pego-Oliva marsh.

Mireia Molla, who heads the regional government’s Agriculture department, was there to see them installed and described the ospreys as “perfect ambassadors” to the Valencian Community.

Ospreys disappeared from the Marina Alta and La Safor in the 80’s although a programme to reintroduce them and encourage them to nest in the marsh began in 2017.

Hatched in captivity, the new birds have been placed in an artificial nest where they will remain for the next two months in hopes that once they leave they will eventually return there as adults.

GPS trackers monitor the ospreys’ movements and habits while helping to identify the threats they face, particularly from the electricity poles where they frequently perch.

This is the Pego-Oliva marsh’s second batch of ospreys and at least two of their predecessors fell victim to power poles and were electrocuted in Morocco and the Albufera in Valencia.

Since then 450 Albufera poles have been adapted to ensure the birds’ safety with work due to start on 100 more in the Pego-Oliva marsh, Molla said.

“We have supported Caritas for several years and this latest supply of food just confirms that whilst our shops were closed

Double whammy phone scam A 40-YEAR-OLD employee of a well-known courier firm was arrested in Benidorm, accused of failing to deliver a package. He was investigated following an official complaint from a Cartagena victim of a phishing scam who revealed bank details after receiving an email informing him that he was entitled to an income tax refund.

But instead of the expected credit from the tax authorities, he found

that an electrical goods firm had made a charge to his account for a topof-the-range mobile phone. The phone never reached its supposed destination and the delivery firm employee, who was the last person to handle the package, was sacked.

It was not the first time this had happened, according to Spanish media sources, and following his arrest he was released pending trial.

New headquarters THE town hall of Campello will fund new headquarters for the local Guardia Civil.

The last plenary council meeting approved an agreement between the local government and the Ministry of the Interior in Madrid, although only the Partido Popular-CiudadanosVox coalition voted in favour of the motion.

Opposition parties maintained that it was the Ministry’s responsibility to stump up the €1.5 million that the new building will cost and the money could be better used elsewhere.

Once the Campello force has a new headquarters, this will enable the town hall to go ahead with ambitious plans for the l’Illeta dels Banyets, an archaeological site with Bronze Age, Iberian and Roman remains adjoining the former Guardia Civil barracks.

Lower scores for second Oliva Nova outing THERE was a good turnout for Pego Golf Society’s second outing at Oliva Nova since the easing of restrictions.

Although there were 27 players, as the Captain suggested when announcing the winners, the scoring was particularly low.

Possibly this could be attributed to the greens, which were slow. It took some time for all the players to get the feel of how hard they had to hit the putt, but nevertheless the scoring could have been much better.

Danny Heron took first place in the First Division of the individual stable-

ford with 33 points although there were a couple of familiar faces in the winners’ list with Nigel Siddall, the previous week’s winner in second place.

The evergreen Brian Barden appeared for the second consecutive week in Second Division which was won by Elizabet Grin with 37 points.

OVER 90 per cent of Spanish families plan to spend their summer holiday in Spain this year, according to a national study carried out by #EnFamiliaPorEspaña (in Family for Spain).

The study explores how family behaviours and views regarding holidays have changed since the country’s State of Alarm and lockdown ended.

The survey confirmed that 91 per cent of Spanish families plan to spend their summer holidays closer to home, either within the region they live in, on the peninsula or on one of Spain’s islands. Around 64 per cent want to travel to a destination they haven’t travelled to before, ideally combining rural and beach tourism.

Surprisingly, the majority will avoid air travel, as 90 per cent plan to travel by car to their holiday destination. But instead of the traditional long trip this

HEALTH Authorities have tested residual waste samples from Barcelona and discovered traces of Covid19 as early as March 2019.

EIGHT Urban Guard officers in Lleida have been placed in quarantine after a 21-year-old detainee infected with Covid-19 spat on them.

According to local news sources, the test which proved the young man was infected with the coronavirus was carried out on June 3.

Therefore he should have been quarantined in his home but he didn’t stay in quarantine nor did he attend his medical check-up. Since he did not attend a check-up they were not able to repeat the test to see if he had overcome the virus or not.

The doctors involved in the case noted that there was no way to locate him and therefore he had not been subjected to any types of health control.

The eight officers who intervened in his arrest, custody and transfer have all been forced to quarantine.

They are soon scheduled to undergo a PCR test to determine whether or not they are infected, however, none have been tested yet.

EIGHT OFFICERS: Now in quarantine after being spat at.

THE Guardia Civil has had to send out a warning to residents in Spain about a new wave of scams which involve people pretending to have a family member held hostage in exchange for money.

The scammers try to extort anywhere from €2,000 to €10,000 from the families.

For now, the majority of these calls have only been detected in Madrid, however, the police are following up an array of reports. In order to incite fear, the scammers pretend to be the ‘supposed hostage’ and scream for help and money in exchange for their release.

THE port in the Spanish enclave of Melilla is under constant surveillance by officers of the Guardia Civil instructed to stop migrants from smuggling themselves onto lorries due to catch ferries to the mainland.

As a matter of course, they sweep each lorry with a heartbeat detector and when it reacted

the public who experience this scam tactic to come forward and report it to the police. They have also released a guideline for residents in case they do suffer from this scam.

Tips include: • Do not answer any phone calls from unknown numbers • Keep calm if you are receiving an extortion call • Try and let them talk whilst you record the conversation • Never give any personal details such as names or addresses during the phone call.

Stowaways hide in lorry positively when they were checking a lorry full of bulk scrap metal, they brought in a canine patrol with a dog that could detect people. It immediately started barking furiously to indicate a discovery but the officers were faced with the painstaking and potentially dan-

gerous job of moving the scrap metal piece by piece to try to find the stowaways.

In the end, they discovered four adults and two children, who were assisted out of their hiding places and found to be undocumented but all were in good health.

On occasion, if the research is not properly

completed, or in case of some extraordinary circumstances, it could emerge later that there are some rights or charges against the property, that could affect the right of ownership of the buyers.

In this article we will focus on the possibility that the vendor sells a property to which they only have partial title.

When this happens, the buyer has a fall back in the ‘saneamiento por eviccion’ or indemnification or liability for dispossession, which is a Spanish legal obligation regulated in article 1,474 and following, of the Spanish civil code, which defines the obligation of the seller to the buyer for the legal and peaceful possession of the property sold.

If the buyer is deprived of all or part of

the purchased property, by a court resolution and by a third party holder of a preferent right on the property prior to the purchase, the purchaser will have the right to claim against the vendor refund of the price of the property, income lost, costs of the court case, expenses incurred, damages, etc.

But, for the buyer to be able to claim, under this rule they must have been partially or totally deprived of the property, by a third person.

The Supreme Court in its judgement 159/2009 of March 9, 2009, reviewed a case where a bank sold a property.

This property had been acquired by the bank through a mortgage foreclosure for failure of payment of the monthly mortgage fees by its previous owner.

What the bank was unaware of was that the previous owner had acquired the property by means of a swap contract that included a resolution condition, which, when fulfilled, would cancel the contract.

The property which was sold came from the division of another property, but the resolution condition was only recorded on the original property sheet in the land registry, despite the fact that it affected the entire property, and also the properties coming from its division.

As the bank sold a property that it never owned due to the resolution condition, the Supreme Court found the bank responsible and ruled that it should refund the price of the property paid to the

buyer.

Also, the Spanish courts have indicated that it could be possible to make a claim via ‘saneamiento’ against the vendor, if the property sold had serious structural problems which made it inadequate for its intended use.

Invaded by squatters A GROUP of squatters has taken over a nurse’s home in Barcelona after she was out working a long shift during the coronavirus health crisis.

The victim of this latest squatter debacle is Pilar, a 62year-old nurse, who like all health professionals, has been forced to work extremely long shifts during the health crisis.

During one of her shifts, she returned to her home only to find that it had been invaded by squatters whilst she was out saving lives. In a heartfelt let-

ter, the nurse informs that her only home has been invaded by squatters. She asked readers if they knew that, once squatters enter your home, it doesn’t matter if it hasn’t even been left alone for 24 hours, or if it’s your day-to-day address.

Pilar feels abandoned by the institutions which are meant to protect her, such as the ‘police or the legal system’ and that despite all the applauses to the medics, she is disheartened to know that this is how she is treated.

Careless owner

THE owner of a small Yorkshire terrier has been reported for animal abuse after she left her puppy locked in the car for over four hours in 40-degree weather. The vehicle was parked in direct sunlight with no ventilation whatsoever.

According to the Emergency Services, a neighbour in an area of Sevilla alerted authorities about the presence of a small dog locked inside a vehicle. Local Police proceeded to break a window of the car in order to rescue the little Yorkshire terrier who was in a dire state. Officers estimate that although it was 40 degrees outside, inside the car it was at least 50 degrees Celsius.

The owner, a 49-year-old woman, was identified and sanctioned for her mistreatment of the animal.

Ready to act THE Defence Minister Margarita Robles presided over the official closing ceremony to thank Spain’s Armed Forces for their service in ‘Operation Balmis’ during the country’s State of Alarm.

During Operation Balmis, 187,000 soldiers took to the streets of Spain to fight the coronavirus for 98 days. They were involved in almost 20,000 interventions in 2,300 municipalities across the country with ‘the sole objective of saving lives.’

LGBTQI: New law to be introduced.

THE Ministry for Equality is taking the first steps towards a law that had until now, remained in Congress pending approval.

The law aims to “recognise as a right” the “self-determination of trans people” as well as other measures to protect the LGBTQI community, despite government spokes-person María Jesús Montero, avoiding the debate on Tuesday after internal arguments from PSOE were leaked that seemed to reject

the measure.

The right to self-determination will erase the need for a psychological evaluation and the compulsory two-year hormone treatment to be able to change a person’s gender on official documents and is included within the new LGBTQI law as well as the Trans Law proposed by the government in the coalition agreement.

Regardless of the reservations within the PSOE party, the General Directorate of Sexual Diversity

and LGBT Rights has presented the ministry’s campaign for Pride 2020, headed by the slogan ‘Now, more than ever, Pride.’

During the presentation, Montero addressed the Trans community “I want you to know that your lives matter and as an institution, we are not going to backpedal. This government will do everything it can to ensure your lives are the same as everyone else’s, dignified, free, and most importantly, happy.”

Bleak future TOUGH times are ahead for Spain as the FMI predicts a 12.8 per cent drop in the country’s economy, the worst in the world.

Despite having controlled the pandemic from a health point of view, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez admitted that a “dark horizon” looms over the country’s economy, as the latest forecasts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predict a 12.8 per cent drop in Spain’s GDP. Sánchez made the comments during the opening of the videoconference 'United response for Latin America and the Caribbean to Covid-19,' in which Spain brought together leaders from various countries of the region.

In his opening remarks, the Prime Minister admitted that the coronavirus pandemic is far from "settled" despite the situation that Spain and Europe are currently experiencing, given the rapid expansion of the virus on the American continent.

Sánchez appealed for unity now more than ever to face the “terrible health impact” of the coronavirus and, as a consequence, the “terrible economic and social impact of the pandemic, which has forced economies and governments to take forceful and also courageous decisions.”

SOCIAL SECURITY services have reached an agreement with the unions to extend the extraordinary aid for freelancers beyond June 30, which is the date it is meant to expire.

The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Jose Luis Escriva, announced on June 25 that after discussing the matter with different union representatives, they will extend aid.

Escriva assures that the “extension of the aid that was initially deployed to alleviate

The administration’s Social Affairs department told Spanish media however that the cases are “under control and isolated.”

Also that the cases had been identified more quickly due to more extensive and “more exhaustive” PCR testing, hence decisions had been taken “in time.”

Care homes have been at the epicentre of Spain’s coronavirus crisis right from the start.

Subhuman conditions

A GANG of criminals in Madrid have been arrested for charging migrants, including families with children, around €250 to live in a storage unit.

The operation re-

vealed the subhuman conditions which these 61 migrants were subjected to live in. For €250 a month, the migrants were renting out small storage unit rooms without any ven-

tilation and with a shared kitchen.

The six individuals responsible for this crime against public health have been arrested for coercion and promotion of illegal immigration.

The area was littered with cockroaches, bedbugs and rats.

There was only one bathroom per 10 rooms (each room containing multiple people) and only two kitchens which were used in strict shifts.

Most of the units were about nine squared metres and shared by three or four people who were coerced into paying €250 without any legal certainties such as a lease.

Some of the larger units were partitioned with cardboard and plastic boards in order to make the space as profitable as possible.

A RUSSIAN male has been arrested in Asturias Province accused of illegally manufacturing and selling medicines in Asturias, Alicante and Russia.

Officers from the Guardia Civil discovered that this individual had no permits to allow the production of these medicines which sold for between €60 and €80 per unit and after analysis it emerged that the contents were potentially dangerous when taken by humans.

Crossing the strait TWO young individuals from the Maghreb have been rescued whilst they were sailing in waters of the Strait of Gibraltar on a kayak and were heading towards the coasts of Cádiz.

According to police sources, the intervention took place at around 5.00am on Monday June 29 after the kayak had left the Moroccan coast with two immigrants on board. It is unknown whether they are from Morocco or Algeria.

Salvamiento Maritimo was called to the scene after receiving an alert from the 112 emergency services in Ceuta which reported the presence of a kayak aimlessly sailing into the distance.

There was a great deal of fog at this time and at 5.50am the rescue team found them in good health in front of the San Amaro beach in Ceuta and transported them to the National Police.

Information Road for visitors works SEVEN information panels at Benidorm’s Castillo tell visitors the history of the castle located on the Canfali headland.

Installed by the town hall’s Historic Heritage department, the panels in Spanish, English and Valenciano give details of the remains, now glass-protected, that were discovered during archaeological excavations carried out last year.

The dig and the subsequent faithful reconstruction of the emblematic Castillo cost €1.2 million, of which €500,000 was covered by a the EU’s European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).

Film festival for home viewers BENIDORM’S Skyline Film Festival will be seen on the Filmin website this year, not in cinemas.

This fourth edition, which began on July 1 and continues until July 12, was due to take place last March but had to be postponed owing to what Benidorm’s Culture councillor Jaime Jesus Perez described as “the situation we find ourselves in.”

Twenty-five of the 300 short films submitted and due to be shown will receive a €200 fee. Ten films still in production are competing for a prize of €13,000.

A SECTION of the Avenida del Mediterraneo was closed to traffic for two days earlier this week for resurfacing.

The now-completed section of the Avenida between Avenida de Europa and the Plaza Triangular has no demarcation between the road used by traffic, which must respect a speed limit, and the pavements reserved for pedestrians.

Wednesday market has returned THE Wednesday open-air market returned to Foietes this week with 87 stalls selling fruit, vegetables and food.

Barriers enclosed the perimeter of the market that had just one access point which was controlled to prevent overcrowding and where sanitising hand-gel was obligatory before entering.

There was only one exit, to prevent members of the public from having to pass each other. There were stalls only on one side of the aisles, which had been widened.

“This enables 1.5-metre social distancing and controls the route that users take through the market as they make their purchases,” the town hall’s Commerce councillor Lorenzo Martinez said beforehand.

“Stalls sell only foodstuffs at present, but the rest will return depending on the way the situation evolves,” Martinez explained.

With a section open to the open air and a large shady area, this is now reserved for those with mobility problems while the enclosed space will be used by the beach’s lifesaving service.

In order to guarantee easy cleaning, Alfaz Town Hall has divided Albir’s beach into four sectors with controlled access to prevent overcrowding and facilitate social distancing.

This has now been supplemented with a €35,000 grant from Alicante’s provincial council, the Diputacion, he said.

MURALLA ROJA: Now a textbook classic.

CALPE’S Muralla Roja and Xanadu apartment blocks are being repainted.

Ricardo Bofill’s emblematic 1970’s buildings, which now feature in architectural textbooks, have lost much of the original colour and their respective Property Owners’ Communities brought in a specialist Ondara-based firm to restore them.

The Xanadu building is green, but the Muralla Roja is not entirely red and has touches of pink, yellow, mauve and sky blue. Matching the original colours is such a delicate operation that two architects from Bofill’s Barcelona studio recently vis-

ited Calpe.

Here they gave go-ahead to the chosen tones to ensure that both buildings are as close to possible as the originals.

The move will help to create employment and revitalise the local economy, by covering the cost of setting up and launching a new business, municipal sources explained.

The offer is available to anybody who begins - or has begun any type of enterprise located in TeuladaMoraira between October 1, 2019 and October 31, 2020.

The town will allocate 20 grants amounting to a total of €10,000.

A very unlucky driver crashed the Supercar just moments after it was picked up all shiny and brand-new from the showroom.

In his book You and the Law in Spain for 2011 David Searl notes that both lifetime and fixed­term annuities have tax reductions. They must be declared in the investment part of the tax form. I have a Swedish an­ nuity with a fixed time of 20 years. I am 80 years old and I have been declaring the annuity as lifetime at 8 per cent.

But I think this is wrong. What percentage of the yearly amount should be declared?

Latest currency news The past couple of weeks have been marked by some notable volatil­ ity in currency markets, amidst grow­ ing concerns that we face a coron­ avirus resurgence.

During this time, we’ve seen GBP/EUR slump from 1.11 to 1.09 and EUR/GBP climb to 0.91.

Meanwhile, GBP/USD has plunged from 1.25 to 1.22, whilst EUR/USD has traded between $1.11 and $1.13.

What’s been happening?

Fresh coronavirus outbreaks in countries like China and Germany, as well as a startling spike in cases in the US, has rocked currency markets through the second half of June, amid fears of a second wave of infections.

Second wave fears drive volatility in currency markets

VOLATILE: Amidst growing concerns of a coronavirus resurgence.

This has been particularly damag­ ing for the pound. The currency has had to content with Brexit concerns and the Bank of England’s announce­ ment of more stimulus while growing increasingly sensitive to market senti­ ment.

Despite the rise in coronavirus cas­ es setting back plans to reopen the US

economy, the US dollar has actually strengthened over the last two weeks as second wave fears have kept the safe­haven currency in strong de­ mand.

Meanwhile, the euro has fluctuat­ ed in recent weeks, with Europe’s sol­ id progress towards eradicating the coronavirus being offset by the EU’s

failure to reach an agreement on a re­ covery fund as well as the threat of a transatlantic trade war.

What do you need to look out for?

Looking ahead, it’s likely the pound will remain on the back foot going for­ ward so long as Brexit progress re­ mains limited and the UK’s coron­ avirus figures remain elevated.

Only a few weeks ago PM Boris Johnson had expressed confidence that a deal could be reached by the end of July, but that optimism isn’t shared by many.

If the number of UK coronavirus in­ fections continue spiking in specific regions, the prospect of lockdown re­ strictions being reintroduced could weigh on GBP exchange rates.

For EUR investors the focus at the start of July will be whether EU lead­ ers are able to agree on the terms of the coronavirus relief fund, with fur­

ther delays likely to undermine the single currency.

The next ECB gathering will also be of interest, as will growth and output figures for the Eurozone’s largest economies.

Finally, with coronavirus concerns continuing to weigh on market senti­ ment it’s likely we will see the US dol­ lar remain well supported over the coming weeks, although any gains could be tempered as political risks begin to grow.

A very serious situation

IT strikes me that most of the the illegal street parties that are being held across the UK’s cities are not being staged as any celebration or gathering of people in pursuit of innocent fun. They are far more sinister than that. These are, particularly in London, mobs of young, predominately black lawbreakers, cocking an arrogant snook at authorities and intentionally flouting the rules to antagonise and provoke the police into more violent confrontation. It will therefore come as no surprise to me to subsequently hear the usual accusations levelled against the police of using ‘unnecessary force’ or the ‘heavy handedness’ we have come to expect.

At the time of writing, 120 police have already been injured at these ‘gatherings.’ I can only assume that as yet no ‘innocent party-goers’ have been hurt or you can be rest assured the outcry would have been heard across the nation. This is of course exactly what these shadowy ‘party’ organisers want. They want these events to be the catalyst for the continuation and escalation of their war against the authorities and an excuse to ultimately disrupt and tear asun-

der the very fabric of the UK’s society.

This is a very serious situation indeed. If the authorities don’t stop pussy footing around and appeasing those who condone and encourage this revolutionary racial violence, the streets of Britain’s great cities will begin to resemble the Beirut I warned about 30 years ago - and we will also witness the holocaust that a certain politician, far more intelligent and visionary than I prophesised even more years before that!

Talk about dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t. The British government is set up like ducks in a fairground shooting gallery, and don’t the lefty media love having a ‘pop.’ It’s really very simple; let the government make a decision and then oppose it! ‘The government wants to set up three-metre distancing.’ Media. ‘We think this is overreacting.’ ‘The government has reduced distancing to one metre.’ Media. ‘This is dangerous and irresponsible.’ ‘The gov-

ernment is imposing total lockdown.’ Media. This is overkill and unnecessary.’ ‘The government wants to reopen some services and ease the lockdown.’ Media.

‘It’s too soon.’ Etc. etc. If you get my drift!

The next move is to make sure their main interviewees are opposed to whatever subject they wish to demean, which gives the impression that the majority of the ‘experts’ disagree with the government policies. This results in the viewer beginning to think that the opinions and anti-government rhetoric being constantly aired must be supported by the majority.

Although they may disagree, they then begin to doubt their own political beliefs.

This is known as brain washing, pure and simple. Well, much to the main Media’s arrogant surprise, these methods didn’t work during the last elections. If they continue to underestimate the public intelligence in their efforts to undermine this government and rebuild their precious Labour party - they won’t work this time either.

Bring back safe cigs

BARRY DUKE FORMER neighbour Gertrude - well into her eighties and with a voice like a wood shredder due to a lifetime of heavy smoking - stunned me a few years back by asking ‘Where can I buy cigs that won’t damage my health?’

She’d just been out to buy 40 Marlboros and was horrified to notice that her favourite brand now bore grisley health war nings. She’d slung them back at the assistant, saying she didn’t want cigarettes that were dangerous, and could she please have the old ones that were safe.

I explained to Gertrude that cigarettes had always posed a health threat, but it was only in 2008 that the UK government insisted that graphic warnings be put on the packets.

Then, after a lengthy coughing fit, added ‘I can remember the days when doctors recommended smoking, and even prescribed them for asthma sufferers.’

While I did recall seeing vin-

tage ads depicting doctors and dentists endorsing various brands I thought Gertrude’s fags-for-asthmatics claim was pure fantasy. Boy, was I ever wrong!

I fact-checked her claim and found an article in the US

National Library of Medicine that infor med me that ‘throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the inhalation of fumes from burning preparations of stramonium, lobelia, tobacco, and potash became increasingly popular amongst asthmatics and their physicians throughout the world.’

One renowned asthma sufferer was French novelist Marcel Proust, who, after trying a variety of cures and even changing his diet, could get no relief - until he began smoking asthma cigarettes. So delighted was he that in 1901 he wrote to his mum to say he’d finally found something that actually worked.

The article went on to say ‘it is interesting to reflect that until the 20th century doctors paid little attention to smoking as a health hazard, prefer-

ring instead to emphasise the perceived health benefits of tobacco and other inhaled substances, and that medicated cigarettes marketed for respiratory complaints continued to be endorsed, and smoked, by doctors until well after the Second World War.’ When I was 21, after having had my tonsils removed by a leading South African ear, nose and throat specialist, the first thing I did after regaining consciousness was to light a Lucky Strike. But I hurriedly stubbed it out when I saw the surgeon enter the ward.

‘No need to do that, dear boy’ he said, ‘smoking is great for the throat. Do you mind if I have one of yours?’

A couple of years later lung cancer ushered him into an early grave and I gave up the habit - until vaping came along.

DEAR Euro Weekly, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made an excellent job with the coronavirus outbreak but he certainly has not thoroughly thought through the idea of scrapping 10-year-old cars.

It may be a good idea for cities and large towns with their higher income and excellent bus service for those unable to replace their vehicle, but that is not the case for everyone nationwide.

Has he taken into account the fact that a lot of people in villages and satellite urbanisations do not have that kind of service and are still recovering financially, being on lower incomes, from last September storms. Also, those who bought used cars as replacements certainly would not be able to undertake the further expense forced on them? What has he for them?

IN the street you can trust yourself to wear a mask, cross the road, go back indoors if people refuse to follow social distancing measures, but what do you do if you are stuck in a 130ft long metal tube going at 575 mph through the sky? There’s nowhere to run.

As the first passengers step off flights both in the UK and in Spain there seem to be different sides of the story.

One gentleman spoke of no checks on the UK side and a free for all on board the plane where passengers were not allowed to space out and chose to remove masks when they settled in.

Another traveller tells of flying into Stansted on a flight where passengers were spaced out, wearing masks and temperature checked upon arrival.

Both were with the same low-cost airline…Ryanair.

With many people who have been stuck in Spain waiting to see their family for the first time in months and sun worshippers with sights set on the coastal beaches, we would hope EVERY single flight would follow a strict protocol to ensure the safety in both countries and the stop of any spread of infection.

So, what is the excuse? Laziness? Or maybe lack of training for staff?

If you board a flight and passengers are not following measures you know are strictly important who can you turn to? The passengers themselves may not listen to reason (people don’t often take kindly to being told what to do), the air staff would hopefully be the main choice and keeping an eye on this as a priority or will we see frustrated captains turning back?

For your own peace of mind always remember to look after number one, flights are never really the healthiest of places anyway so, keep your mask on, wear gloves, use hand sanitiser and try as best you can to keep your distance. Wash those travelling clothes as soon as you can.

But remember it still continues when you hit the ground, for now, let’s all stay safe.

The George Soros allegations are an old rightwing trope that no Americans take seriously.

Trump’s PR stunt, clearing away peaceful protestors with flash grenades and tear gas for a photo op, has been condemned by such leading military leaders as General Mattis, General Kelly and General Milley, the acting head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What Lee does not understand is that the brutal killing of George Floyd by white police officers has stirred an awakening of the American conscience.

Black Lives Matter is no longer just a slogan and a call for action in America. The demonstrations in its favour have spread around the world.

I was always very proud to tell people in other countries that I was English. Hopefully the virus can be controlled and we now have a new premiere of ‘normality’ or ‘the new normal’ where some people have not yet learned, or do not want to, the magnitude that this pandemic can reach if we do not adopt the recommended preventive measures to try to recover our lives as much as possible to the lifestyle that we had led until a just a few months ago.

joy in the south, in a responsible way adhering to the new conditions.

We must change the mindset and be aware that the coronavirus has come to stay for a time, until an effective vaccine is found, so in the meantime, responsibly applying hygiene and social distancing mea-

sures. If we achieve that, for residents and tourists, we will continue to be one of the best places where we can spend our holidays, or living here in Spain because it is a privilege to enjoy our mild and bright winters or the summer holidays where freedom replaces the clock that marks the schedules.

If all together we can make it possible we will continue enjoying our paradise, simply by wearing a mask, washing your hands and maintaining the social distance of 1.5 metres, never before in the history of humanity, has such a serious problem had such an affordable solution.

Let’s be responsible and enjoy the summer that has just begun.

Just cos you can, you don’t have to MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man

OUT for my walk the other day I noticed a restaurant proudly advertising that they specialise in Mexican, Indian and Italian food. I decided this is not a place I would go to eat any of their three specialities. My reasoning is that if I wanted to eat an Indian meal wouldn’t I be better to go to an Indian restaurant that only specialised in Indian food?

I would love to know if anyone has been to one of these places and if so what was it like? This pandemic is going to sort out the men from the boys. The few eateries that I have been to have all made noticeable changes - trimmed down menus and more space. I love it.

Nothing worse than being so close to the person next to you that you want to join in their conversation. I still insist I get my table with the wobbly leg of course but no more tables in the naughty corner or the loo. The biggest bonus is they are actually pleased to see you and the service is brilliant. Of course they are real-

Now that we’re free, and life is there for the taking, it appears that I prefer to stay home. As soon as the gates of life reopened, I was full of enthusiasm. Eager to visit many of my favourite haunts, I soon realised, I longed to be in my garden. Suddenly traffic feels heavy, streets busy, and beaches, well, let’s say, I watch from h o m e . W h y b e s u r ro u n d e d b y people, when I could be poolside with my dog, and a Whipering Angel?

Post, for the last few months, has been pretty nondescript. In fact, it’s been a drag. Where once, fun invitations, were my breakfast reading. I mean, who needs to w a t c h d o o m a n d g l o o m o n T V, when you can have, ‘see you soon’ on an invitation.

H o w e v e r, s a d l y I ’ d b e c o m e used to, little other than bills, upon bills. Then, as if a ray of glory from days past. This week, the postman arrived with envelopes, too refined, to deliver an electricity bill.

All at once, it seems as if everyone wants to host a party. Everything, from stylish days sailing, to charity galas, and all in between.

Marbella, and the world, is alive, and ready to party.

After months of shorts and trainers, now life requires a dress code.

It requires numerous dress codes, worse luck. Too many to consider.

I stare at my recently, unpacked, and arranged wardrobe, and I despair. I want to stay in my shorts and Nikes. These days if it requires more than this, I probably won’t b o t h e r. T h e o n l y a d d i t i o n o f change I do make, from time to time, being, Gucci loafers. That’s as far as I’ll go. And, that’s for lunch, ‘proper.’

Things have come to a pretty pass, when I close the wardrobe doors, and RSVP no to parties, that sound, glittering. However, the new me, is in fact, the old me.

Saw a talk show the other night and the host was saying that the young should go out and do their thing. Be careful but basically get back to normal as it’s their time. We old have had our time and more or less nature should take its course with us. Meanwhile he’s doing his show in the comfort of his Beverly Hills mansion. If he feels so strongly why doesn’t he insist that he goes back to doing his show live in the studio with an audience who are happy to mingle? Or maybe he won’t because the network would be terrified of the consequences.

I also saw someone on the UK news saying it was too soon to open the pubs and a few other places as they wouldn’t feel safe. I’m screaming at the TV - JUST ‘COS YOU CAN, YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO! The government can open up what they like. If you aren’t comfortable don’t go. If you are then go. Simple really.

Finally I was really impressed watching 6,000 Americans cheering the POTUS drink a glass of water with one hand and then throwing the glass on the floor.

What all world leaders should strive to emulate!

Before a life of endless social whirl, I was once a very relaxed person.

One, who preferred to spend time alone. One, who preferred the beach, to flash bulbs. Having been dislocated from the world, I somehow feel, I now want to remain on the periphery. I want to hold on to the slower pace version of existence, that I’ve lived for the first half of the year.

I rise earlier and earlier, as summer unfolds. The birds now waking me at times, that I used to fall home. During lockdown, I found myself doing things, very much out of my norm. I guess, anything was better than sitting around all day, watching endless news reports about the dreaded virus.

One task I enjoyed, was taking care of the garden. And as life moves on, I wake very early and I’m in the garden, lost in silence.

So lost, that most days our gardener arrives and asks me what I’m doing. While dancing takes place on the terrace almost every night. By midnight, I watch life unfold on Instagram, and I say, let them dance. Let them sleep late.

But, I must be up with the lark, or whatever bird it is that wakes me at 04.40.

Sea Fever or The Virus of Disrespect SUZANNE MANNERS SO, the summer is here, gulls are whirling, gaggles of youngsters frolic on beaches across the world like startled crabs emerging from beneath the sands.

Picnics are shared, pop is drunk (the drink not the parent... although if the flip flop fits...) ice cream consumed by the bucket load until small children resemble sunburnt Mr Whippys.

Conversation flits rapidly between the weather and the blasted sand in the egg and salad cream sandwiches, the heat or lack thereof and the beach wear choices of the old lady from next door. The British love a good beach.

Holidays as a child were magical. Every year we loaded up the car and my

BRITISH SEASIDE: Holidays as a child were magical. dad would drive us first to the Little Chef for a mixed grill and too sweet coke and then to Herne Bay to a caravan for six. We kids would emerge in our shorts and vests and wellington boots and off we would go to explore rock pools and hidden caves returning only for ice lollies and dinner.

The beach (as such) was mainly shingles and sharp stones so the journey into the water was punctuated with ooh, ow, ouches as one by one we stuttered into the sea... in my case only to be washed up seconds later displaying a fine set of bruises.

We sank ships, routed pirates and found sunken trea-

sure. We were heroes and mermaids and sea monsters.

We loved the sea.

Evenings were spent at the MiraMar hotel, a bottle of pop and a bag of crisps watching our parents get drunk and giddy. Back at the caravan craft sets were crafted, books and comics were read and the random detritus and sea shells found during the day were categorised and stored in shoe boxes to be discovered months later on rainy days back home.

When the weather turned (as it invariably did) we would walk to Reculver and explore the ruins. It was my Mother’s most favourite place on Earth. We kids played Medieval Knights and damsels in distress.

My family is not alone in this very British love of the seaside. In past times workplaces would organise a yearly ‘Beano’ to Southend, Canvey or Camber Sands, great charabangs loaded to the

gills with families carrying baskets of tomato sandwiches and sausage rolls. The working class holiday of old consisting of one day at the beach come rain or shine.

Nothing tasted finer than the crunchy egg sandwiches and foil wrapped cake. At the day’s end we would pack up. We kids ordered to scour the sand for rubbish which we popped religiously into bags brought especially for that purpose. It wasn’t difficult, we loved the sea and the beach as much as we loved our own homes.

It saddens me to see newspaper reports of the litter left at beaches this week.

Southend on Sea resembled a rubbish barge. The Estuary was saturated with plastic bottles and empty beer cans, tide thick with scraps. A disgrace.

If you ‘must go down to the sea again...’ all I ask is that you pick up your bloody litter!

Supported by Liberty Seguros, the Paralympic Athletics Promises Team comprises young males and females from all over Spain between the ages of 12 and 20 that are living with physical, visual, or intellectual challenges, such as those with learning disabilities or debilitating conditions such as cerebral palsy.

We all go through stressful events from to time that can change our normal behaviour. Short-term changes to behaviour are common. We may feel more stressed, angry or sad.

These feelings are not always a sign of mental illness but changes in behaviour can be a sign that someone is developing a mental illness. You may notice that they start to behave differently.

You may see a change over a number of months.

They could become more anxious, be irritable, try to start argum e n t s , have mood swings, selfharm, sleep too much or too little, not want to be around other people, be less able to cope with work or studies, have concentration problems, have memory problems, eat more or less, or have suicidal thoughts.

How can I encourage someone to get help?

You can try to help someone by encouraging them to get help from their doctor, a GP can give treatment for

some symptoms of mental health conditions. Or they can refer your relative to a psychiatrist.

They might not want to visit their GP. They may not think they are unwell, not realise a GP can help, understand they need help but feel too embarrassed or frightened to talk to a doctor.

Speaking to a professional and opening up about how you are feeling can be quite a scary situation.

There are some things you could tell the person you’re worried about.

• You can go with them to a doctor’s appointment to support them if they don’t want to go alone.

• Many mental health problems can be treated. They might be worried they will have to go to hospital.

• GP notes are confidential.

This means the doctor can’t share information with anyone else unless they agree to it. The GP may have to share information with others if they feel someone is at risk of harming themselves.

Y o u , yourself, m a y w o r r y that you aren’t doi n g enough to help them but believe me, offering emotional support is really valuable.

Listen to them, offer them reassurance, stay calm, be patient, do not make assumptions.

REHEARSALS: Benidorm Council is keen to revive the town’s music scene.

BENIDORM’S three bands and the Cultural and Recreational Association (ACR) La Barqueta have been g i f t e d a n o u t d o o r s p a c e t o re hearse safely.

The Department of Culture has offered the use of the multi-sport indoor track at the Ciudad Deportiva Guillermo Amor, “thus helping them to resume their activity with the greatest guarantees of safety,” said councillor for Culture Jaime Jesus Perez.

A well as the track, they will also have the use of the chairs and two changing rooms that are currently out of service.

Perez said: “Usually the three bands of Benidor m and La Barqueta rehearse in their seats at their own locations. However, given the new situa-

tion generated by the Covid-19, which requires maintaining a safety distance of 1.5 metres, these physical spaces are not large enough to accommodate all the musicians who participate in the rehearsals and to meet the capacity.

“This is why the entities need a larger, open-air space in which to carry out their activities.”

He added: “Music is a fundamental pillar of the cultural life of Benidorm, and so the council wants to help the bands resume their normal activity, so that sooner rather than later we can enoy their concerts and recitals.”

The facility has been offered to the Union Musical de Benidorm, SM l’Illa, SM La Nova and the rondalla of La Barqueta.

Vilakids returns A SUMMER programme of activities has been rolled out in Villajoyosa.

As of yesterday, Wednesday July 1, ‘Vilakids’ is back in town.

The workshops have been resumed with all the recommended hygienic measures, and materials for all those taking part will be delivered in ‘individual use’ packages.

As in previous years, there will be a workshop each day of the week, Tuesday to Friday from 11.30am to 1pm.

And in a first for 2020, ‘The Knot of Solomon’ will be premiered, a workshop in which children will be able to cre-

ate a mosaic.

In the ‘Aroma Laboratory,’ participants will learn about making perfumes and in the ‘Iberian Ceramic Decoration’ workshop, they can make their own handpainted ceramics.

These and other workshops are recommended for children aged

five and above.

CULTURE is back in Altea with a complete calendar of activities for the summer season.

The Department of Culture has prepared a varied programme that includes arts, music, literature and heritage.

From today, July 2, to September 30, Altea church square will host the 37th edition of the Mostra d’Artesanía, an activity that “for over three decades has been a benchmark for high quality contemporary craftsmanship thanks to a careful selection of unique pieces,” said councillor Aurora Serrat.

This year the exhibition has 18 stops, 13 this month with five additions planned in August, and can be viewed from 7pm to 12.30am all through the week.

The performance takes place inside a lorry, adapted for the show.

The trailer has been transformed into a large open-air stage where the singers will perform the opera, accompanied by a pianist.

“The idea is to make the fascinating world of opera visible - and itinerant at the same time and to be able to enjoy this musical discipline,” said Serrat.

Theatrical performances and jazz and blues concerts are also planned for September.

IT’S no secret that lockdown has affected people in different ways. There are those who have despised every second.

by Nick Fletcher SUZUKI’S Vitara is a compact SUV which is practical, reliable and relatively affordable and while there is stiff competition in the sector, the Vitara has plenty of plus-points including its mild-hybrid technology and t h e o p t i o n o f f o u rwheel-drive.

Vitara prices start at €23,669 (£20,849) for the SZ4 trim which includes digital radio and CD player, USB port and Bluetooth connectivity.

The cabin is smartly designed with a userfriendly dashboard layout so you quickly feel at ease. Seating is comfortable and supportive, there is good all-round visibility and the raised gearstick is more convenient for

quicker gear shifts.

The car seats five adults and while the rear seat width is a little tight for three occupants there is good headroom. The boot space of 375 litres is adequate for normal everyday needs and can be boosted for larger items by dropping the rear seats. There is useful under-floor storage space too, and no awkward load lip, though the split-fold rear seats do not lie com-

pletely flat.

Rivals include the Volkswagen T-Cross and SEAT Arona, but Suzuki has its own loyal following and this latest Vitara will have strong appeal to existing customers and with its revised styling and keen pricing is likely to attract new customers to the brand.

ANGEL GOMES: Looks set to continue his development away from Old Trafford.

GOMES is wanted by Chelsea and Barcelona ahead of the summer transfer window and, now, looks set to continue his development away from Old Trafford.
