businesses, shop, and contribute back to your local community who has, in no doubt, been struggling significantly during this unexpected crisis.

and have a drink to celebrate your reunion. Despite having these new, more relaxed, measures we should be extremely respectful of the regulations in place.

Phase 1 vs Phase 2 MOST of Spain is currently in Phase 1 of the de-escalation plan, however, some areas such as La Gomera or El Hierro are currently in Phase 2.

Seeing as regulations are constantly changing under new decrees, it is important to know the difference on what you are allowed to do within your phase and what you cannot do.

Neither in Phase 1 or Phase 2 can you leave the province, mobility between provinces is still prohibited and is expected to recommence at a later date.

In Phase 1 family and friends can hold reunions at homes, within the same province, of up to 10 people.

These meetings should not include any vulnerable risk groups. Funerals and wakes will also be allowed for a limited number of people, 15 if its open-air and 10 if it’s in a

capacities. Places of worship and shops will amplify their capacity from 30 per cent to 50 per cent.

Restaurants and bars with over 70sqm will begin serving clients inside at 30 per cent capacity and with table service only. Shopping centres will also re-open but at 40 per cent capacity but with no

common spaces. Theatres and cinemas will also reopen at 30 per cent capacity.

The newest regulation to be announced under this phase is the reopening of swimming pools and beaches, which will also be controlled. Pools will be capped at 30 per cent capacity and beaches will have to ensure a two-metre distance between individuals. The maximum number of people allowed at the beach as a group is 15, unless these all live together.

It is important to note that with these added freedoms comes an added sense of responsibility which we as citizens of a community must uphold. If sanitary conditions worsen or populations act irresponsibly then there is a possibility of being either held back in the same phase or even demoted to the previous phase.

Show Refunds

TORREVIEJA’S International Auditorium will reopen its box office from June 1 for people to get their money back for cancelled events.

The facility will be open between Monday and Friday from

10.00am to 2.00pm for a temporary period of time which will allow the refunds to be sorted out.

Anybody who bought tickets for shows and concerts via the internet has to get their cash back in the same way.

Fresh New Lines Lane TORREVIEJA’S pedestrian crossings are to be repainted at a cost of around €50,000.

The council has admitted that many of the markings had not been redone for a long time and some are barely visible.

The work will be done at night to minimise any traffic disruption.

A NEW bicycle lane is to be built alongside the CV-870 road linking Orihuela City to the Montepinar urbanisation which lies at the foot of the northern slope of the Sierra de Orihuela.

A contract for the project has been advertised, and the work will take three months at a budget of over €238,000.

First taste of Freedom BARS and restaurants were able to reopen this week across the whole of southern Alicante Province for the first time since the State of Alarm was introduced in mid-March.

It also means residents can travel right across the region, rather than worrying whether they would be pulled over for straying into an adjoining health department.

After a week-long delay in the Alicante and Elche health districts being allowed to join Orihuela and Torrevieja in Phase 1 of relaxing the lockdown measures, some semblance of normality has returned.

That clearly featured a muchneeded lift to the heavily-hit hospitality trade in British expat and tourist areas like Gran Alacant, La Marina village, Santa Pola, and El Campello, as well as the larger centres of Alicante, Crevillente and Elche.

Drain Rescue AN Alastian dog was rescued by Almoradi firefighters after it fell down an uncovered drain.

The pet was being walked by its owner at Vereda de los Mazones and went into some bushes where the irrigation channel was hidden.

Thieves had taken the metal cover to sell off, and firemen got down the shaft to rescue the animal.

Almoradi police issued a warning about the dangers posed by the ditches being without protection covers, both for wild animals, pets and people - especially children.

GUARDIA CIVIL: Are checking up. going into Phase 1 reported little or no problems in terrace areas of bars and restaurants, with social-distancing rules being followed.

The problem is not the reopenings but future concerns, as business owners feel that not enough is being done to help them through the crisis.

A cafe owner in Elche said: “Yes we are trading again, but we know that the number of people that will use us will be

well down on normal times. I can’t see getting enough money to pay the rent, and I could do with more help from the council.”

The international star famous for hits like Lost in France and Total Eclipse of the Heart was due to perform at the city’s Antonio Soria park on July 11.

The good news is that the gig has already been rearranged for the same venue for July 17, 2021.

All tickets which were bought for this year’s concert will remain valid, but

Bad Break A 45-YEAR-OLD man fractured a wrist and suffered concussion after accidentally falling from the first floor of his Guardamar del Segura property.

The incident happened on the Lomas de Polo urbanisation and he was taken to Torrevieja Hospital for further treatment.

A BIG residential area of Pilar de la Horadada is to get a new dedicated ambulance to provide cover for 12 hours per day.

The Pinar de Campoverde urbanisation has the highest elderly population in the Pilar municipality, with a high proportion of non-Spanish residents, including British nationals.

The proposals from the council aim to fulfil a pledge to improve the ambulance service that was made in last year’s local elections.

A new four-year contract to provide two civil protection ambulances for the whole area is to be advertised, costing €570,000 per annum.

AN Alicante Province-led fraud over supplying substandard diesel to lowcost filling stations has seen 43 arrests.

The whole illegal operation may have cost the Spanish government around €11 million in lost tax revenue.

Properties, high-end vehicles, as well as over a hundred bank accounts and €300,000 in cash were seized in a massive operation launched by Spain’s Tax Agency.

The arrests happened in eight regions including Alicante Province, Andalucia and Murcia.

grade diesel from other European countries which could damage cars because of the substandard quality.

The local growers say their own crops are just not worth picking because of undercutting from overseas markets.

La Unió de Llauradors has done a survey looking at onion and potato growers in the Vega Baja region, who say that the price of cheap imports has been “ridiculous.”

Imported onions from as far away as New Zealand and Peru, in addition to the Netherlands, have flooded out local super-

It’s an additional problem that farmers are facing in addition to lower numbers of pickers working for them due to international travel restrictions caused by the State of Alarm.

Many of the regular labourers come from either Eastern Europe or North Africa, and have been able to get into Spain, leaving growers worried that they will be left with produce that cannot be collected and sold.

IMPROVING CONDITIONS: Beach cleaning on the Orihuela Costa.

BEACH cleaning work is being stepped up across the Orihuela Costa, with even stricter standards in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis.

The State of Alarm period has given the local council a good chance to get everything looking good, and as safe as possible.

Orihuela’s Street Cleaning and Refuse Collection councillor, Dámaso Aparicio, said that the current contract runs until early August, and they see a new deal costing €532,000 per annum.

Aparicio said: “We are aware of the importance of the beaches to tourism in the area, and we have redoubled our efforts due to the risks posed by Covid-19.”

“The new contract will guarantee continuity and build on improving what has been done,” he added.

Besides direct maintenance of the beaches, the new tender mentions the hiring of people to empty litter bins as well as removing algae from the sand.

“The beaches of Orihuela have been given many awards like 11 Blue Flags, as well as having the Q quality mark. We need to maintain that standard,” Dámaso Aparicio said.

Walkers have now been allowed to go onto the beaches at Punta Prima, Cala Estaca, Cala Bosque, Playa de Caleta, and the Barranco Rubio.

New Covid-19 Test Kit A PILAR DE LA HORADADA laboratory has developed an innovative kit for the detection of the coronavirus on any type of surface, such as switches, door handles, handrails, shopping trolleys, or work objects.

The KUDAM lab said in a statement that the analysis is carried out using the PCR technique, which is the same as for human tests and the one that currently provides the greatest reliability.

The kit’s objective is to verify the quality of the various cleaning and disinfection protocols that are

Chefs Launch Vouchers Some of the many dishes prepared in Torrevieja.

THE Alicante Gastronómica Solidaria, which has helped feed homeless and needy people during the pandemic, has now launched a restaurant voucher scheme to help get the Vega Baja hospitality industry back in business.

The group, formed by chefs and restaurant owners, is looking to help their colleagues as the lockdown rules are relaxed and customers return to their establishment.

The pre-paid vouchers are being sold to people to get some early liquidity going for restaurants that were forced to shut in mid-March.

The Alicante Gastronómica Solidaria has prepared over 55,000 menus to people across the area in just one month to local municipalities, including Orihuela, Torrevieja, Los Montesinos, Almoradi, and Daya Vieja.

Airport Reopens S PA I N ’ S t r a n s p o r t m i n i s t e r, Jose Luis Abalos, has allowed Alicante-Elche airport to be reopened for international flights.

Only five airports under an original government decree permitted international services, with the exception of health emergencies, and that did not include they key facility for Alicante Province.

The list of airports allowing overseas services has now been expanded to 10, after one regional business organisation called the restriction “an attack on on Alicante Province’s economy.”

The tough talk came from the UEPAL president, Juan José Sellés, who said that it was “unacceptable” that the fifth-largest airport

in the country did not seem to be a priority of the gover nment, and was only running some domestic services and emergency flights.

José Sellés also added that Alicante Province was a “reference point for tourism in Spain” and “was not being looked after properly by people in charge of the country.”

The president of the Hospitality Industry Association of Benidorm and Costa Blanca, Nuria Montes, branded the original decree as “unreasonable.”

Montes said that not opening other airports was sending a “message to the tourist markets to sink Spain, asking them to operate in other areas rather than Spain where things are handled a bit better.”

Rural Thief A 42-YEAR-OLD Russian man has been arrested for stealing from four properties in rural areas of Guardamar.

The Guardia Civil said the robber operated in the Partida Lomas del Polo and Camino de la Antena areas, and would ride away with his spoils on a motorbike.

A background check revealed that he had been arrested by authorities down south at Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol.

Pitbull Attack A LOS ALCÁZARES area cyclist was attacked by a pitbull dog and then hid in the grounds of a property to stop further lunges by the animal.

Abuse Probe Bank Scammers A GANG that targetted elderly non-Spanish people at ATMs has been broken up by the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja.

The crooks hit busy areas like Torrevieja, Rojales and Almoradi, and would stand behind an ATM user and watch them key

in their PIN number. They offered help if the customer had a language issue, but they made sure that the card did not come out of the machine.

As the holder left, they simply obtained the card and then used it themselves.

Pilar Reopening CARTAGENA BISHOP: This is an important inquiry.

A MAJOR investigation has been launched in the Murcia region over the abuse of children and vulnerable people by priests over a 60-year period.

The Diocese of Cartagena says that the probe will look at accusations from eight potential victims, and that because of the time span involved taking in the years be-

tween 1950 and 2010, a lot of work will be required to investigate.

The Bishop of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes, said: “There will be no obstruction of any victims coming forward to us with information, and I have told the priests in the area that this is an important inquiry.”

BEACHES in Pilar de la Horadada reopened his week for walkers and also for individual sports practice. Sunbathing, swimming, and any forms of gatherings are still banned across the municipality’s 11 beaches.

A NEW hoax is circulating on the internet under the guise of Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) telling people via an email that they have been fined for a motoring offence.

Hackers are now using the fake notification to con users to sharing their private details like bank accounts by clicking on a link.

The DGT has advised that it does not use emails to notify drivers about fines nor does it use the kind of very blunt language that has been observed in the malicious mailing, which at first

“Solidarity” not “prejudice” THERE should be no discrimination against visitors from Spain’s worst coronavirus hit regions Madrid and Catalonia in holiday destinations like the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca this summer, says the head of the national federation of municipalities and provinces.

Speaking to Spanish press, FEMP president and mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero called on the public not to “segregate” residents from the two regions and insisted they should be treated the same way on beaches as visitors from anywhere else in the country.

SUPPORT: Rather than “prejudice” against residents of Madrid and C there should be “solidarity,” the FEMP federation president insisted.

“We cannot make infection a segregation factor,” Caballero commented.

“We have to look for no contagion, but not in a derogatory way because it is a common phenomenon.”

The FEMP president expressed his support for Madrid and Catalonia for having had to deal with

such strong outbreaks of the virus and argued that rather than “prejudice” against residents of the two there should be “solidarity.”

Cabellero made it clear the “safe beaches” of his city are open to Catalans and Madrileños as soon as the health authorities allow movement around the country.

Health workers suffering PTSD xxxxxxxxxxx

Ban lifted SPAIN has lifted its travel ban on Italy, which makes a July return of Ryanair and easyJet flights to the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca more likely.

The news was announced on May 19 by the Spanish government, but anybody who gets in by plane or sea will have to go into 14 days of self-isolation under the country's quarantine rules.

The move though is seen as another positive signal following the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially involving two of the key European countries to have suffered the most during the coronavirus crisis.

Ryanair has said that they plan to resume a reduced schedule in July, and they have many links to key Italian centres like Milan and Rome from Alicante-Elche and Malaga airports, used by holidaymakers and business people.

Vueling and easyJet also have extensive services between Italy and Spain, with Malaga an especially popular destination for Italians during the summer.

There are many issues still to be resolved over health and safety as the embattled air travel industry tries to rebuild, but the Spanish government news does come as a psychological boost as the country continues its recovery.

MORE than half of Spain’s health staff working in hospitals during the coronavirus crisis have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and 80 per cent are suffering from anxiety, a new study reveals.

Preliminary results from an investigation carried out by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid Work Psychology and Safety Studies Laboratory show that 53 per cent of hospital health workers display symptoms compatible with PTSD and 79.5 per cent have symptoms of anxiety, of which 21.2 per cent could be severe cases.

The study is based on the experience of 1,243 health workers at different hospitals. Nine out of 10 work in Madrid, Spain’s worst affected area by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Study authors Dr Lourdes Luceño Moreno and Jesus Martin Garcia concluded that depression is another issue. Just over 50 per cent of those taking part in the study have symptoms. Of

Two hundred and fifty office staff are to go from the company’s offices in Madrid and Stansted, in addition to Dublin and Wroclaw.

Sharks spotted A MORE than eight-metre long shark has appeared cruising around just 400 metres or so from a beach in Polopos on Granada’s Costa Tropical.

The Guardia Civil said that while this species of shark, the second largest in the world, is not known to attack man, its Maritime Service advises the public not to get too close to the creature in boats or kayaks.

Spain’s borders stay closed

NO ENTRY: Travel ban extended.

THE country has announced that it is extending a travel ban to all nonessential visitors through to June 15, which matches the European Union policy to do the same.

The new government order pushes past the original cut-off date of May 24, and also goes way past the current period of Spain’s State of Alarm emergency mea-

sures.

A government source said that “restrictions are likely to remain in place no matter how important tourism is for the Spanish economy.”

Only Spanish nationals and non-Spaniards with official residencia documents that prove Spain is where they live are allowed in via flights, sea journeys and land border

crossings. There are some limited exceptions including special category workers and diplomats.

Land borders with France and Portugal were closed to most people since the State of Alarm was implemented in midMarch to fight the coronavirus pandemic, pushing the economy to a near stand-still and hitting its key tourist sector hard.

Lufthansa restarting flights

REACTIVATION: Lufthansa, Eurowings and Swiss will up the flight offer to Spain from 14 to 61 connections a week in the first fortnight of June.

LUFTHANSA group airlines are restarting flights between Ibiza, Mallorca and Valencia and six German and one Swiss city at the beginning of June.

The Lufthansa, Eurowings and Swiss flight offer to Spain will increase from 14 to 61 connections a week between June 1 and 14.

Reservations are already being taken for the services connecting the two Balearic Islands and Valencia with the two northern European countries.

Eurowings will be offering five weekly flights to Mallorca from Cologne, five from Dusseldorf, and four from Munich and two services a week between Dusseldorf and Ibiza.

Swiss is flying four times a week from Zurich to Valencia, as well as operating six weekly connections with Barcelona and three to Madrid.

Lufthansa is meanwhile upping the num-

ber of its weekly services from Frankfurt to the Catalan city and to Spain’s capital.

The new connections with Spain are part of the Lufthansa group’s general reactivation plan, under which it expects to be flying from Germany to 106 destinations in Europe and more than 20 locations elsewhere in the world at the end of June.

The company made it clear it will be working in “close collaboration” with the Spanish authorities on compliance with all current laws and regulations on commercial flights coming in and out of the country.

The group has reminded travellers to take into account rules on entry and quarantine at their respective destinations when planning their trips. It will also continue to ask passengers to wear face masks inside the aircraft, while onboard refreshment services will be limited until further notice.

Face masks Temperature checks Obligatory SPAIN’S government has announced that the use of face masks will now be obligatory in public spaces across the country to prevent Covid-19 contagion.

It is obligatory to wear face masks on all public transport, confined public spaces, as well as in the streets if the minimum social distance of two metres can’t be maintained.

Health Minister Salvador Illa confirmed the new legislation on May 18 as it was an issue that all regional governments had agreed on. THE Spanish government has announced that all arrivals at Spanish airports are to have their temperatures checked on arrival.

The measure, published in the official bulletin, will last until June 15 but could be extended beyond this date.

In a move that severely affects the already beleaguered tourism industry; the new regulation coincides with the extension on the restrictions on non-essential travel for people coming into Spanish territory, which will be in place for another month. It also comes on the same day that the 14-day quarantine for international visitors came into effect in Spain.

by DAMON MITCHELL THE Covid-19 crisis is causing a major distancing between Spanish society and its political representatives.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had intended to push Congress for a 30-day extension of the State of Alarm to ‘cover until the end of the de-escalation.’

However, Sánchez has not received the back up he had hoped for and has had to settle for another 15 days, which is the period for which the State of Alarm has been extended since it was decreed on March 14.

Sánchez explained that, since it is a “completely different phase,” it will have modifications towards the “institutional de-escalation.”

For this, he was negotiating with the Catalonia and Basque parties for their votes of agreement, but has been

However, it was thought that these two parties weren’t necessarily voting with regard to Covid, rather that they would have been

If the parties currently supporting Sanchez back out this could then make way for a vote of no confidence which would then put his position up for re-election.

Meanwhile, by extending the State of Alarm further it is forcing the people on the street or the common man to seek support from social aid and charities just to be able to have basic necessities.

Spain’s electorate seems to have little memory of this and the political parties know this therefore they could push for general elections and once all the important positions have been negotiated just another reboot.

Not enough plastic

EVEN though there are some indus­ tries that have benefited from the Covid­19 pandemic such as suppli­ ers of plastic sheets for safety screens, even they are suffering.

According to the British Plastics Federation, some firms aren’t likely to be able to supply the necessary acrylics until the end of July and as more shops and offices open, so the demand just keeps increasing.

As organisations like Uber and mini cab firms are now trialling the addition of screens in their cars, the supply situation can only get worse.

Spanish car industry facing problems IT would appear that one of the first major losses of industrial pro­ duction in Spain will come in the vehicle production industry.

Japanese newspaper Nikkei sug­ gests that when it reveals its latest results on May 28, Nissan will an­ nounce the closure of its loss­mak­ ing factory in Barcelona and the transfer of production to France.

Last year the Spanish arm pro­ duced some 55,000 commercial ve­ hicles and small lorries but has been working to only a small per­ centage of capacity for some time.

It would be uneconomic to move some of the production from Spain to France if no French factory has the tooling available to take over the work, but with France looking to move into an all­electric vehicle scenario by 2030, any production for new models is more likely to take place in France than see new plant for Spain.

2. If not, can it be made legal by adding a rule to the statutes in the Property Registry?

2. Yes, it can be made ‘legal’ by amending the original statutes of the community to include the prohibition of pool access.

3. No, the Property Registry will not reject the amendment.

All of the above depends on court decisions and not laws.

This is why I put ‘legal’ between quotation marks. One court has ruled that pool access can be prohibited if it is written in the statutes. And, yes, you can amend your statutes by a unanimous vote. This is highly unlikely.

Another large loan THE Spanish construction compa­ ny OHL has entered into an agree­ ment with a number of banks to borrow €140 million in order to protect its liquidity.

As is becoming more common with large loans, a condition was that it should be substantially guaranteed by the Official Credit Institute (ICO) which is an arm of Spain’s government and it has ac­ cepted a 70 per cent risk.

The loan is due to be repaid the end of October 2021 by which time the company expects busi­ ness to return to normal.

Spanish hotels must change MANUEL VEGAS, President of the Spanish Association of Hotel Directors (AEDH) predicts that as hotels try to return to normal once allowed to reopen, there will have to be some major changes in the way they operate.

She has a full-time commitment to her three lovely children, whom she is homeschooling, along with helping an elderly gentleman who is really poorly and helping those in the community who are unable to go shopping owing to the risk of the contagion.

She has also, for the past two years, been the main organiser of the Make

a Wish Foundation charity event in Cantoria (sadly this year’s event is unlikely to go ahead).

A recent example of her good nature is when a lady fell at home and was in fear of going to the medical centre owing to the contagion, so Laura went to her house to clean up the wound and reassure her.”

This was also in addition to delivering food to the community and helping the local businesses and much more.”

I have worked with Joyce cooking food for the homeless in the organisation Adintre in the past and helped out where I could. She started the foundation on her own and we used to cook in her home kitchen before she was able to find the premises near the feria ground and Fuengirola TV and radio station.

The page ‘Kaye Frances Ladies Only Sturdygirlsrus’ has grown to 690 members and has been an incredible success. I am amazed by how much information has been shared and indeed helped some quite desperate people not knowing which way to turn.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NUMBERS seem to be at the top of the priority list among the politicians and media these days. Numbers of deaths here, numbers of cases there, percentages of victims from this area, how the UK numbers compare with other countries.

The whole sorry debacle is beginning to resemble some macabre international lottery competition. As I write this, I have a half an eye on SKY news and, lo and behold, the announcer is giving out more numbers, namely the number of deaths in care homes.

Well of course these particular sums truly are shocking. We are all terribly saddened by the number of elderly patients succumbing to this awful disease.

But why are we so surprised at the high death toll among the most vulnerable in our society?

After all is this not the whole point? It is a proven fact that those who live in care homes are far less likely to survive this

awful virus than others who are younger and more healthy.

I have found myself in a quite a few care homes over the years and have been surprised (or not!) that the homes depict-

ed on the media always seem to show highly efficient modern units, all computerised, with pristine environments and facilities, run by highly efficient and articulate staff. ‘The only reason for

the high rate of deaths in these establishments,’ spout many of those desperately striving to gain political points, ‘is the government’s failure to provide enough PPE equipment.’ But it’s not the only reason is it?

Having experienced the heartbreak of two beloved parents, who finally had to be moved to care homes, I can assure you that they are not all as wonderful as the media would like us to believe.

There are thousands of these lucrative private care homes scattered throughout the country, and quite a number that I have experienced are a positive disgrace.

While vainly searching for somewhere to place my dear Dad and later my Mum, I was appalled by the conditions in a whole host of these places.

Many of them stank of urine.

I saw others that were grubby and badly run by completely incompetent staff. Not a few

were run by immigrants, mainly from Pakistan, who, after taking advantage of government schemes to buy large houses, had brought all their relatives over to live in half of the house, while the ‘residents’ lived in the other half and were often tended by some of these relatives who had no qualifications whatsoever.

The speed that this virus could have run rampant through these poorly run establishments doesn’t bear thinking about PPE equipment or not.

No I truly am fed up with the way the media tries to twist the news to suit their political leanings or merely to pick up ratings by the promotion of sensationalism. Ah well. Go safe everyone.

This too will pass.

MEMORY BOX GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY WHEN I moved to Marbella last April, I travelled light. Extremely, light. I have been known to require a separate car for my luggage, on many occasions. However, the move to Spain was one I was unsure of, so my full wardrobe didn’t arrive with me.

The idea to make Spain my base, was met with uncertainty over whether it would suit. Meanwhile, life remained busy with social engagements, so I used the stores of Puerto Banus to fill in the gaps. After long deliberations over Marbella being the right place, my wardrobe and other deliveries arrived in December, but had yet to be opened and arranged.

As it rained, I opened the third box, of 11, and out fell old photographs, and press cuttings. I had to make a gin and tonic. Sitting on my hall floor, surrounded by chaos, I was transported back in time.

My mind racing, as I rummaged deeper in the treasure chest. In fairness, the majority of the photos remain a mystery, as my old life was filled with memory loss, rather than memories.

Most were taken at parties, or fashion shows. Funnily, some were of me on the catwalk.

I remember one night being asked to walk in a show, alongside my dear friend, the late, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. I arrived pretty drunk, following a long lunch, to find that Tara had cheekily missed her flight. Told I would have to walk out solo, I froze. A room packed with guests and media, I felt self-aware. I felt wasted.

Somehow, the team dressed me and sent me out onto a runway that seemed to go on forever. I stood, dressed in Gucci, legs operating like jelly, and stared out into the darkness.

All I could see was the long road ahead. To the sound of Chic, I Want Your love, I strutted, well, more likely stumbled along. Arriving at the end of the catwalk, I posed for photographers for longer than required.

I think I was just relieved to have made it, without falling over. Turning, I bumped straight into the next model, knocking the poor girl off her Fendi heels. Everyone laughed, I died a little, immediately sobered up and we kept going. In life when we mess up, we have to keep going.

What’s the alternative?

CAT WALK: Strutting my stuff.

And that’s what we have to do right now - keep going. Writing this, on day 63 of lockdown, I feel confused. With still so much ‘normality’ to return, when and how, will it happen? Who knows, we simply must wake each day, and continue. While many things feel surreal, still so many people are hoping for a well-earned holiday.

Rather than live in limbo, perhaps it’s time to consider spending our chill time closer to home.

Possibly, because I live in one of Europe’s busiest tourist destinations, I receive many messages from people, asking if Marbella will reopen and be ready for their planned July visit. Will the airports be operating?

Listen, I have absolutely no idea. All I will say, is if this is something that’s seriously troubling you, perhaps consider a new plan. In the same way that I may not be able to travel to Italy, France or Ireland, you may not be able to come here.

So, I am looking at the option to spend the summer between Marbella and Ibiza. My family spent a lot of time on Isla Blanca in the late 70’s, and this year I imagine it will be a similar vibe.

A chilled, relaxed island, rather than a hedonistic party paradise. For me, the updates regarding air travel and border openings feel a little confusing and unsure, so why waste time living in hope?

Look at options that are achievable and book them. As I began to open box number four, I realised, that real memories, even when most are a blur, are the best thing we have.

This is a good time to sit, think, laugh, and at the end of the day, be grateful. As we’ll be free to make new memories soon.

FREEDOM FIGHTER DEAR Euro Weekly News, Please don’t take away my one hour in the evening for exercise!

I am in remission from lung cancer, and very vulnerable, and the 7-8pm hour to take a walk safely and get some fresh air is a saviour for me, after nearly eight weeks of not leaving the house at all, I do enjoy my evening walk, knowing there will not be 100s of people out walking and putting my health at risk!

At 8pm when I make my way home there are literally 100s of people and lunatics racing past on bikes, and not adhering to social distancing rules, and it would be very unsafe for me to walk amongst all these people.

I may be over 70, but one hour in the evening to walk is not too much to ask, surely?

I am over 70, but just as important as every other member of society! And I wait all day for 7pm to come, so I can go out for some fresh air.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE AWAY THE LITTLE BIT OF FREEDOM YOU HAVE GIVEN ME!!!!!!

OUR VIEW Soft touch DESPITE becoming the worst-hit country in Europe, Boris Johnson seems to be enjoying the peak of his popularity curve. Italy and the UK are the two European nations most badly affected by Covid-19.

Italians, who constitute a sizeable community in the UK, are heartbroken that the British people are suffering the same fate as their home country. Some have taken to social media to chastise the ‘reluctance’ and ‘naivety’ of the PM when it came to containing the pandemic, despite having watched the Covid-19 hell unfold in Italy.

When a lockdown was eventually enforced in the UK, many Italians couldn’t understand why people in Britain were allowed to jog, go for a walk or simply leave home without showing papers to the police. When Britain recently became the country with the worst coronavirus death toll in Europe, many Italians grieved in shock. To others, it was only to be expected given the UK’s relaxed lockdown.

Italians are now leaving the UK in droves to go back to their home country, according to the Italian embassy in London. The initially soft Covid-19 approach of the UK government generated a great deal of fear among Italians, and they decided it made more sense to leave. Just like the Brits, Italians are enormously proud of their healthcare system, which, not surprisingly, was mentioned by Johnson as an example of an excellent healthcare system unable to cope with the waves of victims from the pandemic.

Of course, every country has made its own mistakes against this invisible enemy. Italy made huge ones. Yet many in Italy are still wondering why the UK didn’t act immediately against the virus after the immense suffering in southern Europe. This has now generated a sort of general scepticism and distrust toward the British authorities among Italian citizens.

Pleasure in power Dear Euro Weekly News, I hope I am wrong.

It is my feeling that Bill Gates knows that this pandemic was just a trial run to see who obeys the lockdown and who didn’t. How long people stayed in their homes before they rebelled. What ages were involved and what types of people? How effective was their control of the media and use of AI to remove videos that were against the status quo?

The next pandemic will probably be very soon as they will not want the countries affected to recover economically.

It will probably be a mutated version of CV and they will seed it in areas where it will spread the fastest and kill the most people. This time what the virus does not kill, food shortages will.

The fact that Bill Gates is already warning us as he did the last time that another pandemic is on the cards it will happen because he will make sure it does. This psychopath takes pleasure in his power to create fear and panic on a greater level than Stalin, Mao and Hitler especially as he will be responsible for its release.

But this time the vaccine will magically appear and will be ready with some form of microchip or identity system ready to inject the world population for the coming One World Government. The One World leader the Biblical antichrist.

It’s very hard for the tourism sector here to see another country, whose virus profile is very similar to Spain, take a lead. I hope there may be a rethink to assist the economy here progressing. I can understand the reluctance to accept overseas visitors, but the world is currently grinding to a halt.

Surely there are measures that can be taken to introduce overseas visitors which that can keep the potential health impact to a minimum. We’ve made great progress so far and it would be good to think we could show the world the way and make it a success.

Other People’s Opinions Are None of Your Business were moving to Spain. We weren’t financially secure, we had two young children and nine suitcases with no guarantee of work!

Some supported our decisions, others didn’t! We were told we were crazy, we were told we would be back within a year, we were told it wouldn’t work.

These were people’s opinions. Their opinions were generated from their own fear. If we had listened to those opinions, there is a strong case that we would still to this day, be plodding along and existing.

Our children would never have experienced a different culture and lear ned a new language at such a young age. We knew these people cared for us, but we knew what WE wanted to do. We

respected their opinion, thanked them for their input, blessed and released any form of negativity and continued with our plan. That plan has been the making of our family’s lives!

People will have an opinion, no matter what you say or do.

People will judge no matter what decisions you make in life.

People will react to your decisions through their own experiences, thoughts and feelings, but that doesn’t make it right for you.

Today is the day that you tell yourself; Other people’s opinions are none of my business. I will live my life, my way with my choices. I will fear the fear and do it anyway.

Or maybe you rant, unloading all of your worries on your mum. You might even type a long email to a trusted friend, laying bare all your worries.

Talking through your fragile feelings with a trusted friend or loved one works much like talk therapy, discussing your anxieties helps you sort out your true feelings.

But letting off too much steam isn’t healthy, either. If your venting comes out as rage, or you’re thinking obsessively over an idea or choice, your health may be at risk so make sure your venting remains constructive.

How to help someone who reaches out If your friend is going through a difficult time, offer a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen. Ignore the

temptation to offer advice - now isn’t the time for multitasking with some Candy Crush or Facebook.

But if you suspect their troubles run deeper, encourage them to seek professional help, speak to a doctor.

Hiding away Hiding out under the covers can seem like the only option when you’re feeling sad. Besides, every time you step out into society, it feels like taking a risk. Will you cry in public? Will you say yet another stupid thing that worsens your bad mood?

In certain situations, wallowing is acceptable - give yourself time to heal after something bad happens.

There’s no shame in an extended break from the big scary world.

The more you fold in on yourself, the more difficult it becomes to reach out for help from a friend or a therapist.

How to help someone that just wants to hide away If you’re worried about a f r i e n d who has dropped off the face of the p l a n e t , tread carefully. Not everyone is receptive to a suggestion that might be dealing with a condition like depression. Waiting for them to reach out may be the best strategy.

But if you haven’t heard from them in a while, consider sending a message. Let them know you care and want to talk to them. Don’t push the issue, but leave an opening for further communication.

Washington officials were “furious” to learn UK police had put an international wanted notice out for Anne Sacoolas, the American woman charged over 19-year-old Harry’s death last year, the Mail on Sunday reports.

Harry Dunn was killed when his motorbike collided with a

car outside a US military base in Northamptonshire on August 27

last year. Anne Sacoolas, 42, the wife of a US intelligence official based at RAF Croughton, claimed diplomatic immunity after the crash and was able to return to her home country.

She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in December, but an extradition request submitted by the Home Office was rejected by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in January, a decision the State Department has since described as “final.”

ITALIANS angry over the lack of help from the EU during the Coronavirus Crisis are demanding a vote to leave the block.

Italy was the first country in Europe to be placed on strict lockdown as it struggled to cope with the spread of Covid19. Its European neighbours largely looked on and did nothing to help relieve the burden.

Months later as the lockdown is slowly lifted and Italians begin to tentatively venture out, there is growing concern over the economic impact of the crisis.
