CLINICS MERGE BENITACHELL’S health centre has centralised its services with neighbouring Teulada-Moraira, doubling healthcare efforts while minimising COVID19 contagion.

Previously, the Benitachell health centre was open from 9am until 3pm.

There are now twice as many doctors at the Teulada centre which is open from 8am until 9.30am on weekdays and between 9am and 9pm at the weekend.

Urgencias (A and E) operates round the clock.

Members of the public wishing to attend the health centre are advised to ring 965 739 085 beforehand and should also call the same number with any queries.

There are new procedures for renewing ongoing prescriptions for patients with chronic health conditions, as the regional government’s Health Department is operating a generic PIN number to find new and existing prescriptions without needing a printed form.

A RANDY couple in Denia admitted to defying the nationwide ‘stay at home’ restrictions to drive to an isolated spot for sex when stopped by the Guardia Civil.

The pair originally told officers they needed to go to the pharmacy before confessing their real motive for shunning government regulations to combat the coronavirus was far more amorous.

Acts of rebellion DESPITE round the clock government warnings to stay indoors, Alicante Local P o l i c e s a y t h e re a re still ‘unbelievable’ acts of rebellion, including a family and their children playing in the street and a kebab shop continuing to trade, attracting a queue of customers.

Officers have stopped and questioned more than 1,000 pedestrians and over 500 vehicles in their quest to enforce State of Alarm restrictions, resulting in 300 fines.

But despite this, calls for responsibility and the destating effects of the virus, a minority continue to defy the State of Alarm restrictions.

A police spokesman said that infringements aside, the majority of people were acting responsibly, and thanked them for their cooperation, warning “the confinement will last a few more weeks.

“We all need to be aware, as there are groups of people who

continue to fail to comply. It is necessary to stay at home in order to deal with COVID19,” they added.

Alicante City Council stepped up fixed and mobile checks across the city on Sunday, and said “police actions continue to increase daily to address the coronavirus crisis.”

The document on Facebook will be updated to reflect the latest information.

Accommodation: The Spanish government has ordered that hotels and short-stay accommodation (such as short-stay campsites or caravan parks) must close by midnight today March 26. These measures do not apply to long-term accommodation, such as long-stay campsites, as long as clients can cater for themselves, in their own spaces (ie that clients do not rely on communal facilities).

If you’re currently on holiday in Spain, check with your tour operator or accommodation provider for further information. If you’re travelling and wish to return to the UK, contact your tour operator, checking the website of their airlines or ferry companies for further advice. The Spanish authorities may ask British travellers to move hotels before today March 26 and have underlined that no-one will be left without accommodation.

Travel: British travellers who are currently in Spain and who wish to return to the UK are advised to make travel plans to do so as soon as possible. At present, air and maritime borders remain open, but many airlines and ferry companies are operating revised or reduced services. Travel to airports to leave Spain is still permitted, but travellers may be asked to provide evidence that they are departing Spain (ie plane ticket).

Driving through France: Spain is not restricting land border crossings from Spain to France. To drive back through France, the French authorities require that you fill in a declaration to explain your reason for travel, you should also have evidence of your onward travel plan (ie ferry/rail ticket). UTILITY BILLS: Cutting off vital necessities is strictly prohibited.

THE regulations stated below applies to individuals on a personal level. It is not to be taken into consideration if you are a business, as the same information may not apply to you.

Energy, water and gas are considered basic necessities so the guidelines on these services have been made clearer than in other fiscal areas.

The Spanish government has stated that cutting off access to these vital necessities is strictly prohibited. If you have been left without a job or are earning significantly less during this crisis you are not obliged to pay your bills. However, this does not excuse you from payment rather it postpones your payment to a later, more convenient date. Similarly, any mortgage payments do not have to be paid immediately if you find yourself in a vulnerable financial situation, but they will have to be repaid at a later date.

area. Overall, the government has encouraged residents to establish a ‘chain of solidarity’ between landlords and tenants. In other words, they expect an agreement to be reached between landlords and tenants without interference from the state.

Unions disagree with this method as they say issues like rent should not be left to blind faith. The government has recommended that those who have not reached a conclusion with their landlord and cannot pay their rent should go to social services to ask for financial help, as each autonomous community has been granted €300 million to help with social issues. Bins and IBI (Property tax) payments are hard to generalise as they fall under municipal jurisdiction, however they are likely to follow the repayment protocol of utility bills and mortgage payments. For example, Alicante has decided to delay the bin and IBI payments, whilst, Sevilla has reduced bin taxes for businesses who have been forced to close and postponed IBI payments. Coming out the other side AS the coronavirus crisis gets worse in Spain and around the globe by the hour it is hard to see life beyond what has taken on the characteristics of an increasingly horrific and terrifying never-ending nightmare.

This is not by any means the first time the world has been plunged into dark depths by tragedy and war. This time the enemy is invisible, and a deadly foe which is showing no respect for national borders.

But at extraordinarily difficult chapters in world history like this we do well to remember that dark times do not last forever, and take inspiration from the words of great leader Winston Churchill.

Just a short time ago all eyes were on China as the Covid-19 health emergency first started to unfold, but take heart from reports showing the country is beginning to return to normal thanks to all its efforts.

Moraira-Teulada Golf Match at Alicante O N M a rc h 1 1 , 1 8 m e m b e r s o f Te u l a d a Moraira U3A Golf Group made the journey to the Alicante Course, situated a few kilometres north of the city.

The journey time only being a pleasant drive of about 50 minutes but with an increase in traffic on the AP7 due to the tolls being discontinued. However, it is noticeable how quiet the N332 is. As usual for this venue, finding the car

park proved difficult for first timers, particularly when some Satnavs seem to lose their way!

Anyway, everybody made it.

The course has changed hands since we last visited but the service was still good and prices reasonable.

The weather was sunny with some, quite warm and very light winds. The fantastic weather continues.

Added health risk RESIDENTS of two Alicante neighbourhoods claim sewage discharge is running along the streets outside their homes, posing an additional health risk on top of coronavirus.

The Gran Via Sur and San Gabriel neighbours have denounced the ‘poor sanitation and disinfection’ in the area, despite intensive cleansing programmes being rolled out across the province to combat the spread of Covid-19.

Concerned residents told Spanish press that recent rains had caused the sewage system to overflow, while others complained about illegal dumping in the area.

“Our streets have become a serious health risk with the coronavirus and now the addition of faecal discharges that contain countless bacteria which are very harmful to human health.”

Several points of overflow are apparently seeping sewage close to Joan Fuster Park and the surrounding children’s play areas as well as the bed of the Barranco de las Ovejas, which has no other exit than San Gabriel beach.

An agreement was made in 2019 between the Public Entity of Wastewater Sanitation of Valencia and the Consistory of Alicante, for investment in the renovation of the San Gabriel pumping station, which ‘would prevent a large part of these discharged pollutants.’

And residents say they are still waiting for action.

We were due to play a four ball better ball, but because of the uneven player numbers it was changed to a two ball Scramble. There was some confusion with the handicaps but in the end, we started on time at 10.00. The course was fairly quiet. We also had our usual sweep stake for the number of balls lost (water everywhere).

In general the course

was in very good condition but scruffy around the greens and the fairways patchy. However, the general consensus was positive and we will return. Some of the par 3s were tough but players reached most of them. There is an unusual feature on one hole with ruins in the middle of the fairway.

TV broadcast lessons WITH the lockdown and closure of schools, parents in Spain have a lot to do to keep children occupied.

Although many schools sent out lessons via email or WhatsApp, a new concept for keeping up with school work was introduced by the Spanish Ministry of Education.

For the foreseeable future, two Spanish TV channels, Clan and La 2 TVE will be broadcasting lessons from 9am until 2pm with different subjects being covered each day.

Clan will concentrate on six to 12-year-olds whilst La 2 will broadcast work for 12 to 16-yearolds and as each group will only have one hour of lessons each day.

A DIRECT home care helpline has been opened by Alfaz del Pi Council, in collaboration with the health centre, Cruz Roja (Red Cross) and social volunteers.

A helping hand from restaurant A DENIA restaurant has donated all of its surplus fresh food to a community canteen run by the association, Extiende tu Mano (Extend Your Hand), and is calling on other hospitality establishments to do the same in a video posted to social media.

Casa Miguel Juan is the oldest ‘tavern’ in Denia, originally founded in 1929, and along with all other bars, restaurants and cafes, has been forced to close its doors as

part of the ‘state of alarm’ measures to tackle the spread of coronavirus. Rather than throw away fresh food which cannot be served in the restaurant, management at Casa Miguel Juan gave it to the association which organises a community dining room for vulnerable groups.

Coping with coronavirus Shopping THERE is a great deal of information about how to avoid infection by Covid19, but there seems to be less about how to cope with it and the following is based on information supplied by a nurse.

Purchase tissues (not toilet tissues), paracetamol (avoid anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen), mucus thinning cough medicine (not containing paracetamol), a vapour rub, honey and lemon.

For anyone with a history of asthma make sure that you have a spare inhaler of the type normally used.

Prepare some food, especially hearty soup and place in the freezer and also make sure that you have plenty of clear fluids as you need to keep hydrated.

Make sure that you take plenty of rest and even if you start feeling better you may still be infectious for a further 14 days, so don’t go shopping but ask friends to do it for you and leave outside your door.

A FREE home shopping service for the vulnerable, elderly and people with mobility problems has been launched in La Nucia.

The aim of the new town hall initiative is to help the most vulnerable groups during the current health Emergency, so that everyone can stay stocked up during the lockdown.

This home shopping service is being set up following a risk assessment carried out by the Department of Social Welfare, and while it is a totally free service, the beneficiary must pay the cost of the shopping itself.

Anybody interested in the service for themselves or on somebody else’s behalf, should contact Social Welfare on 966 897 330 (from 9am to 2pm).

A Social Welfare officer will assess the demand and if it meets the established parameters, will organise the service, provided by the staff of the Home Help Service of La Nucia Town Hall.

THERE is a solution for Campello health professionals, Local Police officers and Proteccion Civil volunteers currently worried about their dogs.

The Health and Public Safety departments announced that there are 25 places available at a local canine hotel for those whose jobs on the Covid-19 front line make it impossible for them to give their pets the attention they deserve.

They are now assessing the requests for places, municipal sources said.

“We decided to do this because we are lucky to be able to count on the extraordinary efforts made by our doctors, nurses, police and volunteers who are risking their own health at this critical time,” the Rey de la Casa canine hotel explained.

Aware that some of

these professionals have dogs but cannot count on families or friends to look after them while they are

working, Rey de la Casa is offering 25 free places ‘for as long as the situation lasts.’

AN emergency field hospital with 400 beds to help fight the coronavirus as the number of infections rise will be built in Alicante and

should be operational within the next week.

The Valencian Government has announced a further 700 beds will be made available in Valen-

cia and Castellon with the creation of two additional ‘field hospitals.’

And the authority also reached its first agreement with the hotelier section to use facilities as a health centre, for those who don’t need to be hospitalised but require specialised care.

President Ximo Puig said that so far, resources are sufficient to meet demand, “but all scenarios must be planned to anticipate needs.”

The new facility in Alicante will be located close to the General Hospital, and likewise the other two facilities will be based close to their reference hospital.

Each of the ‘field hospitals’ will be equipped with: an isolation unit, quarantine zone, toilets, a reception, triage areas and a resting place for medical staff.

COMPLETE ISOLATION: The hospitals will be made up of seperate units connected by tunnels to reduce risks.

Each one will be made up of a series of constructions which will be connected via tunnels so that there is total isolation from the outside. And because they are expected to provide a service for “some time,” they will be built accordingly, with insulation from the exterior.

In a show of solidarity, the Catholic University of Valencia (UCV), has made its facilities available to the Health Department to provide health care, both ambulatory, consultation or hospitalisation, through the Virtual Hospital and its new University Clinics. It

has also offered equipment, instruments and material for the protection of health personnel.

And the Ministry of Health has opened a platform on the Conelleria website so that health professionals who are retired or graduates can help fight the pandemic.

Investing in young people YOUTH initiatives and programmes in Villajoyosa have been given a boost following a grant of €33,000 to promote town hall and association activities.

The provincial government aid was announced last week, as part of the Central Government budget for 2020.

The IVAJ grants are aimed at promoting youth policies and programmes with local bodies such as town halls, associations and consortiums.

The grants will make it possible to finance the hiring of a youth technician or technician in each municipality with more than 20,000 inhabitants and of a technician or technician in each association of municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants.

Youth councillor, Aina Santamaria, said that the news “has been very well received in the department” because it will help “develop, integrate and coordinate more efficiently the policies of the town that affect the young population.”

MORE than 150 false training certificates with an estimated value of more than €35,000 were allegedly issued by a 43-year-old man from Alicante, who has been arrested.

The Alicante Command has confirmed the Guardia Civil of Callosa de Segura detained the suspect who has been charged with continued crimes of fraud and falsifying documents.

Although the investigations continue, the Guardia Civil estimates the amount of the scam of these certificates could exceed €35,000.

The inquiry, named the Kanafa operation, began in March last year after a trad-

It was suspected somebody was using the company name and falsifying signatures and illegitimately using official stamps.

During the police investigation, it became apparent more than 150 certificates for training course, aptitude, work risk prevention service and contracting were ‘sold’ to members of the public.

€6 million school project A €6 MILLION project to completely reconstruct a primary school in Villajoyosa has been put out to tender, though the town hall has stressed a deadline for bids has not yet been confirmed in light of the coronavirus crisis.

Plans for the Dr Alvaro Esquerdo Primary School were approved in January.

Councillor for Education, Xente Sebastià, said: “The estimated construction time contemplated is between 450 days at least and 548 at the most.

“Unfortunately, with the state of alert in place, the deadlines for submission are suspended. When this alarm state is lifted, the tendering deadlines will start to run.”

He added that he

hopes “this situation will end as soon as possible for the sake of citizens," and so that the project can be completed as soon as possible.

"With the conclusion of this contract, the aim is to satisfy the need to provide the Dr Alvaro Esquerdo School with decent and adequate facilities,” said Andreu Verdú, mayor of Villajoyosa.

The Venezuelan suspect is now at the disposal of the judicial authority, pending trial, while the investigation continues to determine whether there are more unsuspecting victims.

INVESTIGATION: Police are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding two deaths in Alicante.

A MAN and a woman in their 40’s died after reportedly drinking pure alcohol at a party in Alicante.

A third person was taken to hospital with symptoms.

The deaths occurred within the space of several hours at two separate addresses on Monday, March 24, but sources claim ‘all indications suggest the victims drank the alcohol at a house party held at the weekend.’

It has not been established whether they were drinking 70 or 96 proof ethyl alcohol, Informacion reports.

Post-mortems are expected to be carried out

this week to clarify the exact cause of both deaths, and samples have been sent for toxicology reports.

The first victim, a 40-yearold man, died at around 2pm on Monday March 23, at a home in Avenida de Elche, Alicante. The deceased was living at the property while caring for two elderly people who notified emergency servcides.

Health workers, Local and National Police attended the scene, but could not save the man’s life.

While investigations were taking place, a second 112 call was made, reporting a woman, 45, who was convulsing. She also died at the

scene, while a 28-year-old male relative was taken to hospital showing signs of intoxication.

Police learned the two victims were known to each other, and had both been to the same party.

They are believed to have mixed pure alcohol with soft drinks.

Emergency services in Alicante also dealt with two separate deaths of what are believed to be natural causes on Monday afternoon.

A woman aged 79 and a man, 73, were discovered at their respective homes after neighbours reported not seeing them for weeks.

Dinner vouchers LOW income families of more than 22,000 schoolchildren in Alicante Province have been given a €60 voucher which can be exchanged for food in supermarkets, to help ease the burden during the Covid-19 state of alarm.

The Ministry of Education is distributing the voucher via mobile phone to ensure those children who would normally have a hot meal at school through a ‘full dining room scholarship’ will still eat healthily during the national lockdown.

An agreement has been reached

with Consum and Charter stores, whereby parents can present the voucher, together with DNI, in exchange for food.

Education Minister, Vicent Marzà, has asked for the collaboration of the directors of schools in the province, to ensure parents know about the existence of the voucher as well as how to go about using it.

The move represents €3.5 million to deliver dining vouchers to last 15 days, to around 59,000 students in the community.

Boosting blood reserves AS coronavirus puts pressure on blood supplies across the country, Alicante Transfusion Centre has joined forces with Alfaz del Pi’s health department to stage an emergency donor session to boost its banks.

“This is an act of maximum solidarity with which we can save lives,” said a council spokesman, calling on members of the pubic to help cover the demand from hospitals and maintain the blood reserves, which have been affected by the pandemic.

Benidorm organises shelter for the homeless BENIDORM’S Social Welfare department has converted the Raul Mesa sports centre into a homeless shelter.

“We have installed 25 beds supplied by the Red Cross, maintaining the distance specified by the health authorities while adhering to hygiene and prevention protocols,” Social Welfare councillor Angela Llorca announced.

Fifteen people whom her department initially sent to a local hostel have moved into the shelter, she explained.

“There is room for more people in the same situation on Benidorm’s streets,” Llorca said.

“If anyone knows of anyone who is homeless, please advise the Local Police who can take immediate action, as people who have no home are especially vulnerable to the virus,” the councillor added.

Cabin fever A HELPLINE to cope with cabin fever and other pychological issues which may arise during long periods in confinement is now available to the people of Calpe.

The town hall this week launched a new psychological support service via telephone and Skype.

To be eligible for the service, members of the public must make an appointment in advance, and after an assessment, ‘intervention’ will take place in 30-minute sessions, ‘preferably via Skype, as it allows for more direct contact with the users.’

Rebeca Merchán, the councillor responsible for the service, said “psychological problems arising from confinement begin to arise within the first week when we become aware of the situation we are experiencing. We want to help all the people who are alone, especially the older residents.”

MASKS, protective gloves and other medical equipment have been kindly donated by companies and members of the public to help boost health authority supplies in Alicante and across Spain.

The in-demand items were dropped off at various Guardia Civil collection points, including Alicante Command, and will be made available to medical centres, hospitals and emergency services.

A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil said: “We would like to thank everybody for these donations, it is another sign of the solidarity shown

by citizens in the face of the health alert we are experiencing.”

Donations were made in A Coruña at the Main Post in Boiro, at the Guardia Civil headquarters in Zaragoza and in Castellón, in Palencia, the Alicante Command, in Lleida, Navarra, Leon, and Tenerife.

Items generously given included boxes of masks, soap, nitrile gloves, sanitising gel, hand drying paper, diver’s glasses and hand drying paper.

Acts of solidarity are continuing across Spain day and night as communities pull together to help combat the spread of the virus.

RESIDENTS of El Campello have shown their appreciation to the ‘real heroes’ of the fight against coronavirus by hanging banners of support to ‘show they are not alone.’

This is the latest act of solidarity in the town, in gratitude to all personnel in health and research, food and transport, cleaning and maintenance and the emergency and security services.

Their latest tribute to the ‘heroes’ has seen residents making and hanging banners of encouragement and solidarity so that those ‘who are directly confronting this implacable enemy, know that they are not alone and that they have all the support of the neighbourhood.’

A spokesperson said: “(WE want to thank) people who offer to help Civil Protection and Social Welfare, local businesses who donate sanitary material and food, and even a neighbour who has offered his tractor to support the tasks of cleaning and disinfecting the streets of El Campello.

Goodwill continues current coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

The group organises events such as cake sales, raffles, beetle drives and treasure hunts,

to generate funds for worthy causes.

These funds are then distributed in December to the charities voted for by the members. Last

year, which was the first year for the Goodwill Team, €1,600 was raised and distributed to six local charities, Jalon Valley Help, ARC, SCAN, AFA Alzheimer Unit, Red Cross and Gandia Men’s Hostal.

This year they have already raised €900 and, coronavirus permitting, they had several events organised to raise more funds. Once the present restrictions are lifted the team will restart their fundraising efforts.

In an endeavour to increase the range of local charities which can be supported, the Goodwill Team is arranging for various local charities to make presentations to the members at the monthly General Assembly.

At the March AGA, there was a presentation from Joyce Glenn on

behalf of Cancer Care Javea, who have been raising funds (more than €1 million to date) to support research, hospitals, patient care and individuals in the fight against cancer in all its forms, and whose generous donations were recognised by the Javea mayor at their 20th anniversary.

Their vision is to provide a nursing team, led by their own Lead Care Nurse, to offer help and support to cancer sufferers and their families and to help with communications between patients and local hospitals at all stages of diagnosis and treatment.

In addition to these fundraising efforts the team also organised a collection of goods for

Caritas, which at the March AGA was presented to their representative.

Market volatility and coronavirus when to reinvest and typically leave it too late, buying when investment prices and markets have already risen.

Increasing fears about Covid-19 and its impact on the global economy is having a significant impact on the markets, making this an uncomfortable time for investors.

Cyber Crime

ONLINE VIRUS: Trying to break the entire medical software system.

DUE to the State of Alarm, crime has drastically decreased but unfortunately it has not disappeared, as crime is now online.

Police forces have informed of a new online virus which is reaching medical staff via e-mail, trying to corrupt and ‘break the entire medical software system.’ The deputy operational director of the police, Jose Angel Gonzalez, explained that there has been a significant increase in “dangerous and malicious” cyber-attacks.

Medical staff are not the only victims of these cyber crimes. Over 200 online hoaxes “which aim to provoke fear and panic within the population” have been made during this pandemic. For example, videos of an Italian prison riot have been misleadingly shared throughout Spain.

On March 22 there were 7,007 reports and 61 arrests related to cyber crime.

Since the State of Alarm, there have been a total of 30,254 reports against cyber crimes and 364 arrests within the National Police’s jurisdiction.

THE European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) has been monitoring the activities of a number of rogue manufacturers and importers who are taking advantage of the current coronavirus crisis.

It has discovered that there are a number of fraudsters importing into the European Union a selection of fake medical and personal protection products including masks, disinfectants, sanitisers and test kits.

As well as being ineffective against the virus, these products also fail to comply with

EU standards, potentially damaging health.

Sadly, fake face masks packaged to appeal to children are also being ruthlessly smuggled.

Evidence suggests that these counterfeit products enter Europe through online sales and arrive in containers with fake certificates, are declared as other products, and then find their way into the normal distribution channels, or are sold on the black market.

Consumers are encouraged to be very careful about only buying such items from reputable sources.

The Korean company said that the vehicles, such as those usually used by marketing and press, as well as demo

cars and all its available fleet, are at the disposal of the country’s healthcare professionals during the State of Alarm.

The initiative, named #yocedomicoche, will provide hospitals with ways of transporting equipment or staff to other medical centres and providing health professionals access to cars so they don’t have to use public transport.

Advantages of making a Will in Spain In this article we will review the advantages of creating a will in Spain if you are a foreign citizen or expatriate with properties or assets in Spain. member states of the EU. The regulation however also allows that a Will may establish that the law to be applied will be that of the nationality of the testator or testatrix.

Why is it important to decide which Law will apply to my inheritance?

The law in some countries offers more freedom to establish a Will than others.

Specifically, Spanish legislation is very restrictive in this regard, since it forces the deceased to leave most of the estate to the so-called forced heirs (usually children or descendants, or failing this, parents or grandparents), regardless of what is stated in the Will of the testator.

The perfect counterpoint

would be English legislation, which gives the testator almost full freedom to dispose of the estate as they wish.

If you are a resident in Spain, and you do not execute a Will in which you expressly state that you want the law applicable to your succession to be the one of your nationality, you must take into account that Spanish law will automatically apply, as it would be your last residence.

Therefore be aware that some of the provisions you want or stated within your Will, for example, in favour of your spouse, a friend, or a nephew, could be null and void; which is why the Will must be drawn up correctly.

Why is it important that the Will be granted in Spain?

You must take into account that, in order to be valid in Spain, foreign docu-

ments are subject to some requirements that could prolong the process. Also it is worth bearing in mind that the inheritance tax payment in Spain must be made within a maximum period of six months, extendable by a further six.

In addition, you should bear in mind that one of the essential procedures for the validity of foreign documents in Spain is the sworn translation into the Spanish language, which will make the inheritance process more expensive.

Consequently, if you are a resident in Spain, or simply own assets in Spain, it is advisable to make a Spanish Will to speed up the procedures, and most importantly, reduce costs.

Making a Will in Spain could also be useful for tax purposes.

Creating a Will could help you with regards to tax planning, which could reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax to be paid in the future.

Within the will, you can state, if the applicable law allows it, to whom you want to leave your assets, establish substitutions, trusts, etc ...

Car full of drugs A SUSPECTED drug dealer who was pulled over for flouting the State of Alarm restrictions in Villajoyosa, ended up in custody for trafficking after a ‘large quantity of drugs’ was found inside his car.

Local Police initially stopped the detainee in Avda Pais Valencia because he was out and about during the lockdown.

But suspicious officers searched the car and found narcotics.

He was arrested for, ‘not only putting at risk the health of all at serious risk, but with total recklessness transporting narcotic substances for sale.’

Novelda turns to St Mary Magdalene THE statue of St Mary Magdalene, Novelda’s patron saint, usually remains in the La Mola sanctuary high above the town.

Each year on July 22, the saint’s feast day, the small statue is carried down on a huge flower-decked float by local women to the San Pedro Apostol church in a multitudinous procession.

This year the saint’s statue was brought down early last Sunday, March 22.

With Covid-19 cases in the town and the death of an elderly nun from the virus, Novelda’s population are seeking the protection of their patron saint as they have in former times when threatened by plague or epidemics.

The revered statue was taken down to the church in the parish priest’s car, followed by Novelda’s mayor, the chief of the Local Police and the sanctuary’s caretaker.

Urgent repairs still possible in Javea IN order to safeguard one of the local economy’s mainstays, construction work may be carried out between 8am and 3pm in Javea.

This covers allied occupations, including plumbers, electricians and carpenters.

The edict issued by Javea’s mayor Jose Chulvi also warned that any site not complying with health and safety regulations would be shut down immediately.

EMPTY: No guests for around 38,000 beds.

BENIDORM’S hotel industry calculates that practically 100 per cent of employees will be affected by temporary redundancy measures (ERTE).

Hosbec members announced that they were voluntarily closing on March 15, but the national government did not order nationwide closures until last Thursday, March 19.

Meanwhile, hotels will retain a minimum of staff for maintenance and security as well as reservations, principally to process cancellations.

Managers and promotions teams are also working, revealed Nuria Montes, secretary general of the Costa Blanca’s hoteliers’ association, Hosbec.

Asked by the local Spanish media how long the closures were likely to last, Montes gave May 15 or early June as best-case scenario dates for reopening.

It all depended on the evolution and spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus, she said.

The town hall’s Health department called on Alfaz’s population to give blood to help cover hospitals’ needs and ensure that stocks are not depleted now that donations have fallen off owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Health department explained that the donation installation is a secure area and that donors can attend without worries.

All material used during the donation process is 100 per cent sterile and the health personnel are perfectly equipped, the Health department emphasised.

The donation session, which is the only event that Alfaz Town Hall has not cancelled will be held at the Casa de Cultura between 9.30am-1.30pm and from 4.30pm until 8.30pm.

Tax breaks to beat the Covid-19 crisis

ALFAZ Town Hall revealed a series of measures to alleviate the economic consequences of the Coronavirus crisis.

Deadlines on municipal charges for small and medium businesses and the self-employed have been put on hold.

Eligibility for assistance with the rubbish-collection tax will be extended to include businesses that had to close following the national government’s State of Alarm decree.

“Bars, pubs and restaurants will have a three-month reduction on the municipal tax on their terrace tables and billboards,” Alfaz’s Finance councillor Jose Plaza announced. So too will taxis charged for parking on the public highway.

Payments by administrative concessions will also be suspended.

“This is a temporary crisis,” he declared. “With measures like these

we are confident that we shall pull through once the State of Alarm is lifted.”

Alfaz Town Hall will also apply reductions on the fees charged when opening a new business once the Covid-19 crisis has been overcome, Plaza pledged.

“We particularly want to help the self-employed who have been obliged to close business or whose activities have been reduced to a minimum,” he said.

“These measures were introduced with our municipality’s shops and businesses in mind and approved during the first plenary meeting held since the State of Alarm decree,” Plaza said.

The councillor also stressed that it was vital to comply with all national government directives and that the local population left their homes as seldom as possible in order to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

A desire to help REPRESENTATIVES from the Chinese community presented surgical facemasks, latex gloves and hand sanitiser gel to Alfaz Town Hall.

Two thousand facemasks, 30 boxes of gloves and 60 bottles of gel were delivered to the Local Police station where Public Safety councillor Toni such thanked the Chinese residents for the donation.

They were well aware of the importance of these vital supplies in fighting the Covid-19 virus which knows no frontiers, Such said.

“They began suffering

from this epidemic two months before us. They know how resistant the virus is and how important masks, gloves and gel are in preventing its spread.”

The anonymous donation from Alfaz’s Chinese community has been repeated throughout Alicante Province, reflecting their first-hand knowledge of Covid-19 and a desire to help health professionals, the town hall, police and Proteccion Civil volunteers.

“We have been living here for years, and Spain is our country, too,” the Alfaz delegation said.

POLICE PATROLS: Alfaz drivers reminded of the rules.

FIVE Local Police patrols are out day and night, ensuring that Alfaz residents respect the government’s State of Alarm measures.

“Although there are one or two people who ignore regulations, the behaviour of the majority is generally exemplary, but we can’t let our guard down,” said Toni Such, Alfaz’s Public Safety councillor.

Patrols have been stepped up to prevent unnecessary journeys, Such explained, and drivers are reminded that they risk fines of between €100 and €600,000 for flouting the rules.

Cars may only have one occupant, the driver, unless they are accompanying an elderly person, a child or someone who is disabled.

“It has not always been easy to make people see reason and stay indoors, and it still isn’t,” Such admitted.

“Alfaz’s Local Police and the

Guardia Civil are doing a commendable job in getting across the message that we are living in a State of Alarm and there are restrictions that we must comply with for the general good if we are to overcome this global crisis,” Such said.

“At present drivers are only being informed but all the signs suggest that the situation is going to continue,” he added.

“It is essential for everybody to obey the rules and halt the spread of the Covid-19 virus as soon as possible.”

Speaking as the weekend approached, Such reminded the local population that there was a total ban on driving to a second residence, visiting the beach, countryside, relatives or friends.

“We just have to stay at home,” he repeated.

Students still receive their grants ALL of the student grants pledged by Alfaz Town Hall have now been paid.

Thirty-five local students who have finished their compulsory education and are now taking non-university courses and another 131 university students will receive help with travel expenses.

In all, they have received €38,500, announced the town hall’s Education councillor Dolores Albero.

The grants are an Education department initiative funded by a specific allocation for training and education and, although all schools from kindergarten up to universities are currently closed, the

Altea NEWS All municipal taxes suspended ALTEA Town Hall thanked the local population for cooperating with the emergency measures to contain the Covid-19 coronavirus.

“I have nothing but thanks for the social collaboration that has been so evident in Altea since the first moment, especially after the closure of bars, restaurants and so many shops,” declared Altea’s mayor Jaume Llinares.

He and councillors from all parties also applauded the work carried out by those providing health care, basic general services and the food sector so that Spain can continue to function.

“Please continue to comply with the State of Alarm measures and go on demonstrating the sense of responsibility that practically all Altea residents have shown so far,” Llinares said.

Garage fire soon extinguished TWENTY-SEVEN people were temporarily evacuated from apartments in Calle Bon Repos after a car caught fire in a communal underground garage.

The blaze began at 4.30am, filling passageways with smoke but the flames were soon under control and residents were able to return to the homes once firefighters had aired the building.

Cooperative reports ‘erroneous’ THE directors of Altea’s agricultural cooperative media denied reports that 65 per cent of its members had left.

The cooperative is in financial difficulties and, having begun insolvency proceedings, must now

decide whether to move to smaller premises proportionate to Altea’s significantly reduced production.

Francisco Devesa said that he feared the reports could create “irrational dislike” regarding the diffi-

cult time that the cooperative was going through at present.

“What is more, this goes against everything that the cooperative’s directors and members have done to safeguard the continuation that had majority approval on February 24,” Devesa declared.

“To date, only 14 of the 397 members registered with the cooperative in 2019 have left, mainly because they no longer have fruit to contribute,” he explained.

“Claims that we now have only 136 associates is totally erroneous information that created alarm,” Devesa concluded.

It contradicted members’ unanimous decision to look for a viable way of saving the cooperative, he said: “Basically this is one way of assisting the precarious situation of our fruit cultivation in our area, not to mention all of Spain.”

Confusion over possible Covid-19 case A TEACHER at Calpe’s Adult Learning Centre (FPA) is self-isolating after showing possible symptoms of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

At the time of writing, she had not been tested for Covid-19 as this was currently reserved for patients with serious symptoms although the FPA advised all those who had contact with her to self-quarantine as a precaution.

The alert caused a certain degree of local confusion, according to the local Spanish media, as the first FPA communique announced that the teacher

had tested positive.

This was later amended in a second statement explaining that although the teacher had displayed symptoms of the virus, no test had been carried out.

This was in line with the Valencian Community’s standard procedures for possible coronavirus cases with only mild symptoms.

Guardia Civil officers were guardian angels GUARDIA CIVIL officers from the Calpe post helped a local family without money or food for their children.

It all began when the town hall’s Social Services department rang Marta, a mother-of-three, cancelling her appointment.

She later explained to the Spanish media that her daughters aged 10 and six, who usually have free school meals, had been at home for a week.

“There was no food in the house and I decided to go to the town hall,” Marta said.

She didn’t get there because a Guardia Civil patrol stopped her. Telling them she was going to the town hall, they said it was closed and she should return home.

Once back, unable to stop crying, she rang the 112 emergency number.

“The operator took my details, told me not to worry and that she would sort it out.”

Minutes later the Guardia Civil called, explaining that the Red Cross couldn’t bring food for a couple of days as they were still arranging deliveries.

“They asked me what I needed and I said just pasta for lunch and something for breakfast,” Marta told the media.

She enclosed €10 and as the two officers each gave her €5, Marta was able to buy nappies for the baby.

Easter draw at Charity THE Charity Shop of Calpe recently emailed the Euro Weekly News, confirming that the shop is currently closed.

“If you haven’t already bought tickets for the Easter Draw, don’t worry as we shall be delaying the draw until the shop reopens,” the Charity Shop’s Karen Pearce explained.

Safe and clean in Teulada-Moraira MUNICIPALLY-OWNED Teumo Serveis is intensifying street-cleaning and disinfection while taking all possible action to ensure operatives’ safety.

TEULADA-MORAIRA’S municipal sports schools, closed during the coronavirus State of Alarm are preparing exercise routines and videos.

These will be sent out to children, young people and adults so that they can still keep fit during enforced isolation.

Generalit joins murder prosecution THE regional government will take the part of the private prosecution in the murder trial of Moraira resident 36-year-old Alina Mocanu.

Romanian-born Alina was stabbed and killed by her partner, Arthur Karvink,

a Dutch national aged 59.

He has already admitted to murdering her last February and is now in prison on remand.

As well as the case brought against Karvink by the state Public Prosecutor, Alina’s family are also

putting in a private accusation and now the Generalitat has instructed its lawyers to represent the regional government in the case.

Alina’s murder was a case of gender violence, the Generalitat maintained.

“It is a social problem of general public interest that obliges the public authorities to take action in order to eradicate abuse,” declared a statement from the Consell, equivalent to the regional government’s Cabinet.

Teleworking for town hall TEULADA-MORAIRA Town Hall set up an internal system enabling councillors and town hall officials to communicate by video.

They will now be able to communicate as a group and take decisions regarding the situations that arise owing to the Covid-19 health crisis.

The local government, headed by the mayor Rosa Vila, has informed opposition councillors that they are prepared to discuss any issues arising from the coronavirus emergency.

Vila also conveyed her willingness to use the video link to “meet” all councillors and discuss all themes relating to the municipality without having to attend the town hall.

Teulada-Moraira Town Hall also stressed the importance of maintaining social distancing and remaining at home to prevent the spread of the virus and to assist the tasks of those whose jobs obliged them to carry on working.

It was for this reason, Vila said, that councillors and town hall officials were working from home.

Javea NEWS The bear facts Help now and in the future JAVEA rubbish collectors were astounded to find a stuffed bear in a rubbish container for garden waste.

“We’ve found strange things in the past but this is the strangest of all,” said a spokesman for the refuse collection service.

The dustmen were confronted by a huge brown bear lying on top of some pruned branches although after initial moments of panic they were relieved to discover that it was merely the work of a taxidermist.

Not that this was the first time the rubbish collectors have found the handiwork of taxidermists while on their rounds. Javea residents have in the past divested themselves of the odd stuffed fox, large birds and the occasional genet, they said. But never a bear.

They are also accustomed to finding rubble and domestic appliances in the Puntos Verdes (Green Points) containers theoretically reserved for the waste from residents’ gardens. But not bears.

Recovered from the shock, the lorry driver and other rubbish collection employees removed the bear which was moth eaten and past its prime, they said.

They took it to Ramblars where rubbish is sorted.

Here the bear was classified as ‘inappropriate refuse’ and despatched for burial and oblivion at the Les Canyades landfill in Campello.

Inditex donate supplies

AS many companies with huge turnovers look to their governments to support them financially during the crisis caused by the coronavirus, Spanish giant Inditex, the world’s largest retailer, confirms that profits will be down this year.

Not daunted however, they have decided that with more than 3,700 stores temporarily closed around the world (although encouragingly only 11 of those are now in China), it will start to help the fight against the virus by turning over much of its ca­ pacity to making accessories for the health section.

Netflix reduce bandwidth FOLLOWING a request from Euro­ pean Union Commissioner Thierry Breton, Netflix has agreed to re­ duce the bandwidth it uses in Eu­ rope, but only by 25 per cent.

The Commissioner made the re­ quest in order to try to ensure that with so many people in lock­ down, the internet would not crash.

As Netflix charge an additional fee for HD quality, they have been careful to ensure that those cus­ tomers who do pay the extra don’t lose out or ask for a refund.

Overall picture quality should­ n’t reduce considerably.

Bankers’ €447m scam TWO British bankers have been found guilty of tax evasion in what is believed to be Germany’s biggest postwar fraud trial with the guilty parties defrauding the government of €447 million.

They have received suspended sen­ tences from the court in Bonn but one of them has also been fined €14 million for his part in the crime.

This incredible scam is known as the cum­ex trade (similar in some ways to the Carousel frauds over VAT in the UK) but was carried out on more than 30 occasions.

The EU market watchdog has confirmed that whilst all traders are supposed to record conversations with customers, for the duration of the current crisis, they must take detailed notes of their con-

versations.

This is in response to complaints from banks that they have not received sufficient advice on what they should tell their staff to do in order to comply with the law.

One of the two men who used Gibraltar­based investment vehicle Ballance Capital, told the court “I have made mistakes, I have learned my lesson,” but a fine of €14 million doesn’t actually replace the €447 mil­ lion which was collected by the pair over their seven­year crime spree.

It is believed that the technical le­ galities surrounding the trial made it the most complicated tax fraud case in history, but the convictions may be used as a precedent in future trials.

BUSINESS EXTRA Task force THE Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK is setting up a task force in order to ensure that retailers don’t use the coronavirus to take advantage of shoppers by either artificially inflating prices or making false claims.

Plastic bags IN order to speed up deliveries and to encourage home shopping, the British government is allowing supermarkets and food retailers to scrap the 5p charge for each plastic bag used for those ordering their groceries online.

Despite the government’s plans to cover the earnings and business affairs of the legitimate citizens, quite rightly no provisions have been made to offset any problems of the illegal brigade. Unfortunately this is going to mean droves of disgruntled, hungry and possibly dangerous individuals prowling the streets prepared to do just about anything to ease their desperate situations.

Of course if Corbyn’s lot were in power, they would probably have special stations set up to take care of them all. In fact, if Diana Abbott had anything to do with it, it’s highly likely they would be given some kind of priority! When our lives return to normal, let us hope there is a bit

of ‘new brooming’ and some of these, often utterly ludicrous practices, are sorted out once and for all. Particularly the benefit baloney the country has become entangled and gnarled up in over the years.

In fact this latest example is not only a disgrace, but an insult to the families and victims of one of the worst acts of terror the country has ever seen. Last week, after the brother of the Manchester bomber was impris-

oned for his part in the attack, it was revealed that his family had been receiving benefits of more than £2,000 a month.

What was actually more disturbing was that when his mother took her three youngest children back to Libya in 2016, no one from Social Services thought to check their circumstances and the payments continued unabated.

This was subsequently used by these two monsters to not

only live on, but also purchase the components for the bomb which ultimately took the lives and maimed the scores of innocent victims in the Manchester arena atrocity. In other words the British tax payer funded the attack! Obviously when all this horror is at an end and the UK has the opportunity for a fresh start, the whole system will need a complete overhaul.

In our ‘new world,’ that will inevitably have undergone dra-

matic change, we will hopefully see more attention paid to the indigenous and better deserving population and use a little more common sense over the bleeding heart and luvvie brigade, who have managed to disrupt common sense and plunge the UK into a mind boggling turmoil of political correctness and utterly ludicrous ‘uman rights which needs to be sorted.

Finally this week I fervently hope, that when our human race ultimately manages to defeat this invisible nightmare, it will realise just how frail our existence actually is and learn that love and peace is still the only true answer to it all. Hang in there everyone.

ISOLATION GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS I sit at my desk to write this column, I realise that I am fortunate.

Yes, like everyone else, I too am in lockdown, but as I sip my espresso, and look to the sea, I know I am one of the lucky ones. I’m healthy and my family, who are in Ireland and the south of France, are thus far, okay. I am lucky in others ways too, as I’ve never held, what they like to call a ‘proper job.’

Therefore, I’m used to the freedom of doing as I wish, when I wish. While I saw others panic and stress when told to self-isolate, the idea of staying home, was at first, very normal to me.

However, it was after day one that I realised, I longed to lunch at Sea Grill, or get lost in Museo Ralli. I longed to be free to pass the late afternoon at the stores of Puerto Banus, or hop on a plane for risotto al nero at Cipriani, Monte Carlo.

But alas, lockdown is lockdown.

As the days began to pass, I started to snoop on social media to see how others were coping. Home work outs, cookery, fashion advice, beauty tips for ‘lockdown meltdown.’ All fine, but nothing new. Then of course there were those, who chose to moan and complain about everything and everyone.

I scrolled and scrolled, only to see people moaning at the government, the world, the sky, the sea and the dog.

Nothing was off limits. Without intention, I began to unfriend and delete people at an alarming rate. Why do I need these negative sorts in my new virtual world? I guess I’d never noticed them before, as I, like most, pay little attention to social media, as such.

Delete, delete, delete... I went into a frenzy, going from over 3,000 Facebook friends to less than 500 within half an hour. Try it, it’s surprisingly liberating.

So, with a major Facebook cull complete, a morning swim, lunch on the terrace, and a work out planned for that evening, how was I going to stay entertained for the rest of the day? A couple of years ago, I wrote a novel, Diary of an It Boy. A factional story based on the hectic life of an international socialite.

Filled with dramas and high-octane parties, from London to Gstaad. From Gstaad to Marbella, and beyond.

FORTUNATE: There’s a book in all of us, why not try it?

Anyhow, I remembered how good it felt to escape into the writing world, where nothing matters apart from the screen and your creativity. After an hour in the cellar selecting some wine, I poured a glass of Amarone, and set about writing a whole new book.

Should it be a follow-on from book one? Seeing as so much has happened since I wrote it, perhaps yes. It was at that moment, I experienced my first point of writers’ block. ‘Oh, a new book, exciting! What’s it going to be called?’ my friend Tancredi enthused, via Facetime.

I couldn’t even come up with a storyline, so the title was too much to try. I closed the laptop and went to workout. As I pounded the treadmill (God I miss my morning run on the beach), it came to me. That evening with Miles Davis playing, the fire lighting, and the distinct scent of Byredo Safran candles, that fill my house, ideas flowed and I got busy. Without trying, I found my mojo.

There’s a book in us all, try it. Who knows, perhaps from these dark days, will emerge some great modern classics. I’ll keep you posted. Stay safe, stay busy, stay creative.

NOT BORED YET DEAR EWN, Thanks for keeping on top of the reporting for us. Now that my family’s panic has calmed down a bit and we have started to settle in after a week of isolation, I am glad we have somewhere to turn to.

We thought the children were going to drive us crazy because they are a tad hyperactive but have taken some advice I saw you had online and we have been doing daily relaxation and yoga. There were also a lot of online activities for them and the town hall has been showing videos of exercise, so at least we will come out of this more physically fit!

Anyway, just popped by to say thanks.

Heavy handed DEAR Euro Weekly, I wondered if any of your other readers have been having the same problem. I understand and agree with all this staying in the house isolation. However, my wife and I are in jobs where we still have to go to our workplace. We have our NIE and residency but also carry a paper signed and stamped by our work. We are getting stopped every day when we leave the house and the police are not happy with our paperwork.

I understand the reason they are there and the massive and scary task they have at hand but must they be so aggressive? Also, I really do feel that there is a sense of racism about it. I am obviously not a local which they will tell by looking at me. I was out walking my dog and a kind resident pulled up and told me that the police were on the next block and scanning all the dog’s electronic chips to make sure they are registered to you, overkill?

I will keep doing all that I can but is there no way of explaining this is scary enough without an armed aggressive man threatening you every day?

Wow... the whole world united. Why can’t it be like this forever.

Under control SPAIN is currently on lockdown in a State of Alarm and most residents are now in self-isolation. In certain areas of the country, the police are having major problems controlling the general public. Hefty fines are being dealt out and warnings are being given for normal acts like walking down the street or having passengers in your car.

The police may seem heavy-handed and threatening to some, even though the people of Spain are pretty compliant in comparison to other countries. Will the UK lockdown go so smoothly? The news in Britain up until now has been full of crime, out of control gangs and evidence that the police there cannot handle the public as it stands.

How will they deal with that kind of lawlessness when trying to enforce a lockdown?

We can only hope that the Army can put the point across and bring the country into their control. Who knows, maybe when we come out the other side of this there may be some kind of new appreciation and order. The population may then realise that a sense of control can work in everybody’s favour. Solidarity and putting on a united front in a time like this can help spread a feeling of positivity as we band together to get through this. Here’s hoping, stay safe.

I am going completely crazy THE night of March 11, 2020 will be branded in my memory for as long as I have a functioning brain. I didn’t know it at the time, but when my husband Marcus and I joined a couple of friends for dinner and drinks, that would be our last social gathering for what could be weeks if not months.

Alice and Paul were at the tail-end of a four-month stay in La Cala, and we were discussing, among many other things, our plans for Marcus’ birthday celebration in Benidorm’s Old Town on March 25.

Then, on the Friday, came Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s bombshell announcement of a ‘State of Alarm’ - the first in Spain’s history - in response to Covid-19.

ON LOCKDOWN: Will we ever be able to socialise again?

This had a devastating effect on the couple’s holiday - and, indeed, the vacations of thousands of others. They were informed that they wouldn’t be able to fly home on the date they’d booked, and would have to get a much earlier evacuation flight on Wednes-

day, March 18.

There would be no birthday party for us, or any other form of mingling.

Socialising is the very essence of being human, and is so much part of street life in Spain that its absence is the most surreal and disturbing thing I’ve ever experi-

enced. This is the stuff of fantasy.

So was the arrival the day after the ‘State of Alarm’ of a delivery man. In all my years in Spain I have never had a delivery on a Saturday. He came bearing a small parcel from Amazon… and a huge, heavy carton on a trolley containing heaven alone knows what. A fridge? A freezer. A cooker?

He explained it was for the concierge of the building, Julio, whom he couldn’t locate. He asked if he could leave it in our apartment. Of course I agreed.

I tried phoning Julio but got no reply. When I finally managed to contact him he said was away, but he’d pick the carton up first thing on the Monday. It’s still partially blocking our front door. And very worryingly Julio appears too have vanished off the face of the earth.

When you’re a virtual prisoner in your own home, unable to get out except to walk the dog and buy food and medication, you immediately start thinking

about the things you really need but cannot buy.

In my case the first item that sprung to mind was vaping liquid. Tobacconists, whom are allowed to open, do sell the stuff but my experience is that their brands are inferior, so I stick with my favourite vape shop.

Then it hit me: Vapour Bros has on online store. So last week I put in an order for enough liquid to float Queen Mary 2. That order should have arrived by now, but it appears that no delivery personnel or posties have been to our apartment block all week.

Has the virus impeded or halted deliveries in Spain? I could find nothing on the Internet to suggest that it has.

I’ve decided to use my confinement to improve my Spanish, and a new phrase I added to my vocabulary today is ‘me estoy volviendo completamente loco’ (I am going completely crazy).

Let’s hope we all work together MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man AS some of you noticed I didn’t do an article last week. I tried about 10 times but nothing I was grumpy about seemed really relevant at the time.

Since then we have been put on lockdown and the whole world has gone crazy. But this week, after being home for a few days, there are some things I think need addressing. These articles are written a week in advance so this might have all changed by the time this goes to print. I agree with everything being done here in Spain with a couple of exceptions. For instance there are three of us living here - me, Mrs S and our dog WhatWhat. Yes,I know, but that was his name when we got him.

He needs to be walked three times a day and sometimes one of us does the walk and sometimes we both do, but now only one of us can. Why? We know not to speak to people, but I’m allowed to go shopping or to the pharmacy where other people are. I’m dog walking round a deserted street! Maybe

someone can explain. I also read that builders are working on sites. There’s other things, but let’s just do as we are told.

Here everything is closed so as painful as it is, the public are in no doubt about the rules. But in the UK places are allowed to open, but the public are being told not to go out to pubs etc. Madness. BJ has been on TV every night making government announcements.

They are offering loans and grants to homeowners and business but only some with pandemic clauses in their insurance cover will be able to claim. But there will be some that, for whatever reason, don’t fit the criteria. Landlords need to have their rents paid by tenants but what if they can’t pay? There’s nothing in place for them. I read on Twitter trolls saying it serves landlords right like they are all some type of Rackman character (Google it). But it’s just another business like having a shoe shop.

Some of the small businesses that are closing now will never open again.

Rental properties here are getting no bookings now and bookings are being cancelled. There are many people here that work and have a small amount of savings. We all have bills to pay. Let’s hope that everyone works together and we will get through it.

I’M really fearing for my home country, the UK. As I write this, it’s the day after Mothering Sunday. I’m seeing images from the UK of crowds out, going about life as if nothing has changed. I must admit, when news of the Corona Virus first hit the headlines, I laughed it off. I thought it was terrible for the people in China. But laughed at those who were panicking that it would make its way to us, in such a catastrophic way. I came out of denial about a month ago though!

To see so many British people still thinking they’ll be ok, though. Quite Frankly, I can’t believe the stupidity! I’m getting the same sinking feeling felt when the Brexit vote passed. Thinking the same thing “my God, how can you all be so

stupid?” It wasn’t hard to see the bigger picture then. It’s not hard to see it now either. I thought no good would come from isolating yourself from a union that is there to protect all its members.

You go back prior to the vote, even up until recently, you’d hear the same thing “we don’t need them. We pay in more than we get out.” I remember thinking about home insurance and comparing it to cancelling that because your street hasn’t had any break in recently.

Yes, Britain has done well over the years. It’s been one of the strongest European countries. I can see it all

coming crashing down now though. The failure of the government to act quickly and lock the country down. The sheer stupidity of the masses going about life as if everything is normal too.

Italy’s heath system is on the brink of collapse and so is Spain’s, despite swift lockdowns. It’s inevitable the UK will suffer much more. I think dark days are ahead. I fear the economy and the health system will both completely collapse.

Now they’ve cancelled their insurance policy too (EU membership), there’s no future financial aid available. No help from their neighbours.

I hope by the time this goes to print, the UK government will have done the right thing and stopped freedom of movement. Maybe some good will come of it?

Maybe those who voted to restrict movement in the good times will realise how precious it was during the bad? Wouldn’t that be ironic?!

What is wrong with Mummy?

MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED LIKE any other parent you live with the guilt and question yourself if the job you are doing is ‘good enough,’ with that and my own mental demons I would bring myself to breaking point.

Being a parent is difficult for anyone, but being a parent with bipolar does come with a unique set of worries and challenges.

I cannot count the number of times I have stopped and wondered how much damage my illness causes to my child. I remember many sleepless nights worrying about the day I would have to explain to my child what her Mummy had to go through on a daily basis.

I will never forget the words my mum said to me one day “We will explain to her in age appropriate terms.”

Growing up children naturally have a lot of questions - when they don’t get answers to their questions they tend to come up with their own, which can be incorrect and scary for them!

“Why does my mummy cry and shake sometimes?” She asked her Nana.

UH OH!! How do you explain to a five-year-old about panic attacks?!?!

I felt as if my whole world came crumbling down, I thought I was doing so well by putting a brave face on day in and day out for my child, hiding away the fact that I had to take medication several times during the day.

That I cried or felt suicidal at times. That I was tired, so tired of being ME! First thing I could think of saying was “Mummy has really bad headaches and sometimes gets really poorly.”

I asked a child psychologist on how to deal with this kind of situation, to which her professional advice was to talk to her in words she understood and to always speak the truth.

Each parent and child’s “beginning conversation” about bipolar and anxiety disorder will be different depending on the child’s age and ability to understand. Nobody knows your child better than you do.

This seemed the appropriate explanation for a five-year- old, and it was, I answered her question and on she

went about her day without giving it another thought.

Now at the age of seven years old, she knows that her Mummy is different, that I have good days and bad days, she knows what a panic attack is, she also knows to call her grandparents straight away if she thinks Mummy is really poorly. She knows she can ask me anything, tell me what she is worried about and Mummy will always answer.

The hardest thing to live with is knowing that seeing me live with bipolar may have caused her to feel unsafe, caused her to feel upset, or blamed herself - breaks my heart.

Everyday I wake up setting my parenting expectations so high. On my good days I may meet them all, and on others I fall short. But the one thing that never falls short, is how much love I have for my child and some days that is ENOUGH. A few tips I have learned along the way, may help others reading this: • Don’t be scared to ask for help! : Let your loved ones know how they could help you. It’s brave to admit you would like some help.

• Don’t sweat the small stuff: If you can’t do the dishes today because you need an early night, don’t worry, they will still be there tomorrow!!

• Self care is important : You need to take care of yourself in order to be able to take care of your children.

• Your self worth exists outside of your family : It’s important to develop outside interests so you can feel worthy.

Wash bottles Pop your reusable water bottle in the dishwasher every day or if you don’t have a dishwasher, clean it thoroughly with hot soapy water, which needs to be piping hot, at over 82ºC. Wipe down your keys Everything your hand touches carries germs, although your keys are less of a concern as you probably touch them only a couple of times a day, but in the current climate, clean them daily with a wipe.

Reading matters Treat Kindles as you would your phone. Choose a wipeable case, or use electronic screen wipes.

With books, don’t lick your fingers before turning pages - your mouth contains all kinds of bacteria.

Get a phone case Phones go everywhere with us, making them hands-down the most germ-ridden item in your bag. The answer? Clean yours daily. Ideally, cover it with a hardcase and a screen protector you can rub down with a household antibacterial wipe.

Special wipes for glasses Reading glasses can be another germ hotspot. The reusable cloths that come with glasses just spread bugs around, so use a disposable antibacterial wipe to clean the frames and case regularly.

Banish bacteria

Hang up your bag Handbags are a nightmare to keep clean. If you have a fabric bag, you

can put that in the washing machine, or wipe fauxleather down with antibacterial spray once a week.

Vitamin C Protocol Used to Prevent Coronavirus (Covid-19) Infections THE novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has infected thousands worldwide, raising fear and anxiety among the general population. There’s still an air of uncertainty surrounding this illness, but one thing’s for sure - like other viral infections, practising proper hygiene rules, namely wash your hands often, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, avoid close contact with people who are sick, put a 3-6 feet safe distance between yourself and other people.

Certain protocols of intravenous (IV) vitamin C with other vitamins, has been shown to improve chances of both prevention and healing. Here are some easy guidelines to simplify the process of mastering your optimal diet, despite your lifestyle: Lower carb meals. Many health professionals suggest approximately 80 per cent of your meals should lean towards having a ‘slower’ carbohydrate content. Slow means the carbohydrates have high fibre content which slow blood sugar spikes. A typical low carb lunch may consist of a large salad, chopped vegetables and beans or chicken.

A half plate full of vegetables. Your carbohydrates should come from mostly vegetables. This means replacing your bun and fries with a lettuce wrap and a double side of sautéed broccoli.

Protein. The absolute best appetite suppressant known to date is protein. Prioritise and budget for highquality protein, especially if

from an animal source.

Plant-based proteins like beans, lentils, and seeds count too!

Nothing from a bag or a box. Probably not new advice to you, but track how many snacks you consume that are pre-packaged, replace those with veggies and dip, boiled eggs, home-made low-sugar fruit and nut mix.

Limit alcohol to two days per week. Especially for fat loss; one-two drinks max.

Nothing thwarts fat loss like alcohol. As a sugary additive to our diet at an average of seven calories per gram, it can easily put your body into fat-storing mode.

I got a fantastic chicken from our local butcher and set about trying to make something exciting from what I had in.

Last summer I bought a huge bag of red chillis from the market for a euro. I threaded them on a string and hung them in the sun for a couple of weeks. I still have some and I also have some paprika in the cupboard so I thought Piri Piri chick-

en would be appropriate. Although I would have to make do with cooking the chicken in the oven rather than over a charcoal grill.

Remove the wishbone from the chicken (this makes for much easier carving). Using sharp kitchen scissors cut down either side of the backbone and remove, now you can push down on the bird and there you have a spatchcocked chicken.

Marinate in salt, lemon, garlic and olive oil. Put seven chillis, garlic, paprika, lemon juice and olive oil in a blender.

Roast chicken until golden and brush with the paste when ready to serve. Enjoy.

Ingredients • 4 cod fillets • 100g (3½oz) breadcrumbs • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • Finely grated zest 1 small lemon • 1tbsp chopped fresh chives • 1tbsp chopped fresh flat­leaf parsley • 1tbsp chopped fresh basil • 60g butter, melted • 1 lemon, quartered, to serve

Method Heat oven to 180°. Place the cod on a large greased baking tray and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Combine the breadcrumbs, garlic, lemon zest and herbs, and season well. Pour in the butter and mix with a large fork or your fingers, until combined. Cover the fillets with the crumbs, pressing down on each.

Transfer to the oven and roast for about 20 minutes, or until the crust is golden.

I prefer Mendelssohn to Bach, but I would never claim the former to be the greater.

The assessment of musical scholars, conductors and other interpreters is to be taken seriously.

The composers’ versatility, the expression of their music in numerous forms at the highest level is what sets apart the six pre-eminent from the great specialists (such as Chopin, Verdi and Mahler). These are Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Brahms... and, of course, Beethoven. So what sets Beethoven apart from the other five?

Because of the depth of his understanding of humanity,

Beethoven’s music offers something for all human conditions and senses. If we want to reflect on love, we can listen to the Romances for violin.

For adrenalin the finale of the Fifth Symphony or Piano Concert No 1; for pure enjoyment the Choral Fantasy; for

reflection on sorrow the ‘Pathetique’ Sonata; and for peace of mind and communion with nature the Sixth Symphon, ‘Pastoral.’

In his search for understanding, Beethoven chose to break all the ‘rules’ of musical composition. As an example,

in the Moonlight Sonata he mixes the tempos so that an emotional farewell to a loved one breaks into rage at his loss; his Fourth Piano Concerto uniquely opens with solo piano and his Ninth Symphony, probably the most famous piece of all classical music, was another revolutionary masterpiece.

The concept of fate in the Fifth reflects the composer’s own life plagued by terrible illness, loneliness and deafness, ending with his triumph. The riveting finale of the Seventh conjures up social intercourse ‘the apotheosis of the dance.’

The Ninth expresses his ideas about universal brotherhood and love.

The five piano concertos, with their beautiful melodies, illustrate the transition of music as he takes us from the classical to romantic (personal) era.

They are all masterpieces, as wonder ful on the ear as Mozart’s. And his string quartets have even more depth than those of Haydn.

Haydn and Mozart likewise gave us beautiful music which goes to the heart. As music entered its greatest era, Haydn was the bud, Mozart the blossom and Beethoven the fruit - the ultimate product of the evolution.

His life was blighted by numerous physical ailments but his courage and his musical brain triumphed. He overcame deafness by using the sounds in his imagination as he painstakingly wrote down his ideas. The result is one of the greatest legacies in history.

CRUZ ROJA in Alicante has handed out emergency goods for people in a desperate situation who may not be able to get to the shops for essential items.

On Tuesday items were handed out in Talía and yesterday, Wednesday, 25 care packages were handed out to those in need in the town of Javea.

These packages included cleaning basics like laundry detergent, washing up liquid, bleach and floor scrubber as well as personal hygiene items such as shampoo, bath gel, wet wipes and the all-important toilet paper.

There was also a selection of long-life food items like pasta, rice, flour, tins of tuna, lentils and chickpeas and oil for cooking, plus fresh milk and vegetables and a few treats like biscuits, cheese, yoghurts and cocoa.

For those that cannot cook and for the homeless, there were ready meals and cold cuts.

OBJECTIVE: The local authority wants to discourage residents from doing daily shops.

A COUNCIL in Extremadura has established a minimum spend of €30 in supermarkets and food shops throughout the coronavirus State of Alarm.

The mayor of Herrera del Duque in Badajoz, Saturnino Alcazar, said the aim of the council proclamation was to ensure residents “avoid going shopping daily and comply with the

obligation of staying at home for the maximum possible time.”

The proclamation states that the entrances and exits to food stores are being checked and that there will be sanctions for anyone who violates the €30 minimum.

The mayor reminded the municipality’s 3,500 residents that the majority of food outlets and super-

markets in the locality offer a home delivery service.

The council head explained the decision to introduce the minimum spend measure had been taken due to the “continued non-compliance by some residents” with the State of Alarm regulations on confinement, and who had been “using shopping as a pretext to leave the house.”

Spanish repatriated THE Spanish Cabinet have decided to include an exception to the decree, established on March 10, that prohibited direct flights from Italy, as they aim to repatriate Spanish nationals and residents who find themselves stuck in Italy.

Maria Jesus Montero, the spokeswoman for the Cabinet has specified that whoever arrives to Spain on these flights must stay in complete quarantine at their homes. To make sure they stay quarantined they will be monitored by health authorities.

Flights will be able to land in various Spanish airports, such as, Madrid, Barcelona, Las Palmas and Malaga.

This decision has been made due to the ‘evolution of the pandemic,’ as the government needs to find a way to return the Spanish residents or nationals home. Italy is the only country from which flights have been strictly prohibited since March 11.
