1.35€ MILLION FOR BEACH

ALMUÑECAR Council has requested €1.35 million to ‘urgently res t o re s a f e t y a n d t h e quality of the beaches in the municipality’ which were devastated by recent storms. Surveys carried out by the Department of Beaches and Tourism estimate this will be the cost of carrying out extensive reparation work, and is urging the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, the General Directorate of Coasts and the Government Subdelegation in Granada, to stump up the cash. Councillor of Beaches, Daniel Barbero, said the action is necessary to ‘avoid repeated damage caused by heavy rain and strong winds’ and added: “The demands have been made to repair the damages suffered as a result of the maritime storms, but

Heritage at risk THE PSOE party of Almuñecar and La Herradura have expressed their concerns about the risk of losing important archaeological sites, and the ‘unfortunate abandonment’ of assets of cultural interest to the public. Spokesperson, Rocío Palacios, said: “Archaeological sites such as the Puente de Noy Necropolis, testimony of incalculable value of our Phoenician-Punic past are totally abandoned, unprotected, affected by rain and other inclement weather, overgrown grass, without any cleaning, and there are gates and oxidised protection fences without any tourist signalling.” She said “it is inconceivable that a site of this importance, which was even used by the Romans and which survived as a burial place from the seventh to the first century BC, is in that state of abandonment and that you cannot even visit it.” The party has highlighted other archae-

ological areas in a similar situation: These include the salting factory of the Parque del Majuelo (which dates back to the end of the fifth century BC or the beginning of the fourth century BC), San Miguel Castle and the Aqueduct of La Carrera and Roman baths of La Carrera. Palacios added: “It is sad to see that our municipal government cares so little to keep that legacy in an adequate state. Our historical past, the vestiges that remain of it, is one of the main values that define us as a town and that differentiate us from other tourist destinations. “We must keep our important historical heritage in an adequate state of conservation and signalling so that it can be known by both our visitors and our residents.” She went on to say that if the local government dies not act fast, “the damage will be irreparable.”

defence pier, the loss of sand in the area next to the park on Velilla beach, improvements to the breakwater of protection on the beach Fuentepidra and Puerta del Mar, the breakwater on Cotobro beach, lost sand on Marina del Este beach, and future protection of the Peña Parda area next to Cerro Gordo (La Herradura). The request was agreed almost unanimously at a meeting this week by the political parties PP, Más Almuñécar, Ciudadanos, CA and PSOE, with the abstention of Adelante Andalucía.al parties.
