TO THE RESCUE

THE Bomberos (firefighters) in Palma were particularly touched by a letter they received from sevenyear-old Angel who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) a rare disease which means that he is unable to walk and slowly his muscles will deteriorate with little likelihood of a cure. The letter which moved his friends in the fire station so much is reproduced below, ‘Hello friends! Today I will tell you some-

thing. I really want to get older as now I also want to be a firefighter to help people as you have done for me. I live on the fifth floor of an apartment block and the lift has been out of order for two weeks. As you will understand, going up and down to my home is impossible because of the discomfort it causes to me when trying to bend my knees even using the surgical devices. My family tried everything they could to help get out but without success but with a

wheelchair, school bag and other things, it is difficult enough to use the lift but image the impossibility without. We therefore appealed to the firefighters of Palma, to whom I am tremendously grateful, as they were quite happy to be on hand morning, afternoon and evening to help me so that I could go to school, my physio and enjoy all my normal activities which I had missed. They have been so helpful and nice to us and since then I keep thinking about them and

British patient says thanks THE British Mallorca resident who contracted the coronavirus during a stay in a French ski station has expressed his gratitude to the Balearic Island health authorities for the treatment he received. Now back at home, the expat patient sent a thank you letter to the Son Espases Hospital where he presented himself voluntarily after finding out he had been in contact with a person infected with the new pathogen. After two positive results in the tests carried out to see if he was carrying the coronavirus, he

tested negative twice which meant he was able to leave the hospital last Friday, seven days after he was admitted. “I’m pleased to confirm I have been discharged from Son Espases Hospital, am in good health and happy to be home,” he wrote in the letter published on the health facility’s social media accounts on Tuesday. “All of our ski group, including the 11 in England and France, have recovered quickly from the virus. We all experienced mild symptoms and required minimal medical treatment during our time

in isolation, he said. He continued, “I would like to offer my thanks to all the staff at Son Espases who have supported me and my family in many ways during our time at the hospital. “Equally thank you to all those in the health service and related organisations in Mallorca and the mainland.” “Thanks finally for the support I have received from family, friends and the public. I am very grateful to all of you. He ended, “I’d like to ask for the continued respect of my and my family’s privacy.”

LITTLE WARRIOR: Angel with his friends the firefighters. the fantastic work that they do. My thanks, firefighters of Palma for your generous help. I don’t know what we would have done without you.’

The Palma fire brigade has shared the story on their social media under the heading ‘My little warrior’ and this has gone viral.
