A COURT trial that began in Murcia and has lasted more than three years involving the man claimed to be Spain’s most prolific banknote forger has finally come to an end.

Big build BIG RED’S Animal Retreat and Rescue is an amazing animal rescue centre in Los Montesinos that was completely destroyed in the Gota Fria in September 2019, but rather than abandon the animals or give up, the centre has come back bigger and stronger for the good of the animals.

In a move to rebuild the shelter, run by Suella WinstonCampbell, aka Big Red, they have managed to raise funds for materials through a Christmas fete, charity events and a Teaming.net page where people can kindly donate.

However, they are currently looking for help with the labour to put it all together. Some of the jobs that need to be tackled are the creation of patio door spaces in the annexe, which need to be bricked up and new windows and a door fitted. HOMAGE TO MIGRANTS HUNDREDS of people gathered at Cartagena port on Sunday to pay homage to the immigrants who have lost their lives while trying to cross the Mediterranean and reach Spain and other European countries.

This was the sixth year of staging the act as part of the city council Culture department’s ‘Cartagena Piensa’ programme of ‘Aquí solo queremos ser humanos’ (Here we just want to be human beings) days for solidarity. Among those attending the event staged at the whale’s tale inner dock were Cartagena Social Services council-

The gathering had been organised by a series of organisations and institutions, among them the Red Cross and associations for immigrants and vulnerable groups in society, with the collaboration of the University of Murcia Sociology department, the Asociacion Amigos de Ritsona for refugees and migrants and Cartagena Piensa, with the support of the city council.

Water bill help

LARGE families in Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca will be able to apply for assistance on paying their water bills from the AGUAMED water company social fund.

Announcing the measure, Torrevieja mayor and AGAMED Administration Council President Eduardo Dolon said the subsidies were aimed at helping households of five or more afford part of the water consumption in the main family home.

The time period for applying for the financial assistance runs until April 30. Applicants must provide a series of documents, including their identity card or passport and their card verifying their family is classified as large, as well as proof of registration as a resident in the municipality, the property details and proof of the applicant’s legal use of the home, and a copy of a water bill.

Families made up of five members will be eligible for just over €126 assistance a year, for a little over €189 if there are six members and just over €252 if they are a family of seven.

MAZARRON will host the beginning of the ‘Fesurfing Junior Series’ on February 15 and 16, one of the scoring events of the Junior National Circuit of the Spanish Surfing Federation.

The participants will compete in the Sub 12 categories in mixed class and Sub 14, Sub 16 and Sub 18 in both male and female class. There will be nine events in total, each with 1,000 points, which will be held on the coasts of Andalucia, the Canary Islands, Asturias, Galicia, Cantabria and Murcia.

The event will take place on the beach of Junta de Los Mares, more popularly known as ‘Bahía Grande’ beach, which stands out for having a sandy bottom with different breaks and a prolonged slope perfect for the creation of waves, ideal for surfing and competitions.

CELEBRATING MURCIA HERITAGE MURCIA will be celebrating its heritage on Sunday with the official inauguration of the new itinerary of guided tours of the remains of the city’s medieval wall.

The event will feature music and workshops, as well as a chance to follow the route of the old wall.

The Culture and Heritage Recovery department-organised progamme will feature three guided visits at 11.30am, 12pm and 12.30pm. Participants will discover the gate to the San Nicolas church, the Arab remains of the Calle Sagasta wall, Calle del Pilar, the remains of the Veronicas Wall, the España plaza, Calle Apostoles, the San Juan de Dios church, the Correos market, Calle Canovas del Castillo and the Santa Eulalia plaza.

Murcia’s wall was a defensive structure dating back to the ninth century. It has 90 towers and formed a two-kilometre perimeter around the city. There were also a series of gates.

Inside the medina, and parallel to the wall, there were some of the most important buildings, including mosques, baths and workshops.

The artists appearing and donating their time free were Johnny Lea, No Limit, Bee Rumble, Rachel Prescott, Al Joel, The Raquel Pena Flamenco Dance Academy and Nigel Burchill as Elvis closed the show.

The total amount raised was €1,269 to be donated to help in the fight against cancer.

LACK OF SECURITY: Constant patrols requested.

Market security IN Campoamor, vendors from Teulada Market have demanded that surveillance be increased in the face of increasing security problems that resulted in the theft of wallets to customers, especially older people.

They have explained that until October the market had private security but that the town council did not renew this service, although they were informed the contract was coming to an end.

Other problems are that the drivers of the vehicles

parked in the space where the market is set up, which during the rest of the week is a parking area, are asked to park elsewhere from 8am when the market holders are getting ready.

However, with nobody to enforce this, they are still moving cars when customers have already arrived. The merchants have asked that the town council provide them with constant security or Local Police patrol as at this time the officers that do patrol the area leave whenever they are called.

Charity theatre R A S C A L S a re a s o c i a l a n d t h e a t re g ro u p w o r k i n g f o r the community and raising money for local charities.

They began in 1993 when a small group of friends from La Siesta decided to meet up regularly for social events.

Deciding they wanted to raise money for charity and entertain people they started to put on shows in local bars, squares, theatres and venues, and have now raised thousands of euros for different charities. Only last week they presented Afecancer with €450 that they had raised from some of their most recent shows.

Sadly, in the last couple of years, the Rascals numbers have dwindled from their heyday in the 2000’s when they had over 70 members.

CALLING ALL KNITTERS...

At a recent CARE group meeting, it was announced that Cruz Roja were setting up a project in their centre in Guardamar to support homeless people.

HELP Vega Baja decided that they would like to support the important project and provided a donation of €5,000 towards the cost of the renovations.

It didn’t stop there! Volunteers from the charity decided that they would also like to provide the homeless with some hand knitted blankets!

Michele Masson, President of the charity, told us “our volunteers are always willing to go the extra mile and over the past couple of months many of them have dug out knitting needles and made square after square with the end result of beautiful and warm blankets.

“We have also had interest from other people outside of the charity who would like to join in. Although our knitters are

THE prosecutor in an ongoing case in Murcia has asked for 17 years in prison for Jesús MCB, a man accused of holding a homeless woman with a borderline personality disorder for 30 hours in the underground parking garage of La Glorieta.

The prosecutor states that the events occurred in June 2017, when the defendant, allegedly, after meeting the woman

Once there, and although the woman tried to escape, he abused her ‘at least’

four times. When he fell asleep she tried to call 112, but he woke up, snatched her mobile phone and removed the SIM card.

The prosecution has requested 12 years in prison for the crime of rape and five years for a crime of illegal detention, along with 10 years of probation and the payment of compensation of €6,000 to his victim.

CAR GANG CRUSHED N AT I O N A L P O L I C E have dismantled an organisation who specialised in vehicle theft. They are alleged to have stolen 80 vehicles which were then modified for shipment to North Africa.

A total of 20 have been arrested, 11 in Alicante and nine in France.

The organisation was made up of highly skilled members who acted in a structured and hierarchical way.

There were people stealing cars, mechanics, drivers and administrative managers.

To steal vehicles, they broke one of the win-

dows and manipulated the lock and start system using electronic devices and very advanced computer equipment.

They were not scared to use violence if needed and had robbed at gunpoint on one occasion.

The vehicle was then moved to a secret location where it was parked for a reasonable amount of time.

During that time the documentation and identification elements pertaining to the car would be forged. They had informers who had access to Spanish and French traffic databases, as well as manipula-

tion and forgery experts.

One of the heads of the group had a business for buying and selling cars in Alicante, which they used as a front and enabled him to launder the profits.

In a final phase of the investigation, which took place last week in Alicante, the National Police detained two more people. The detainees are of French, Algerian and Spanish nationality and are between 36 and 48 years old. They are charged with felony robbery, forgery, money laundering and criminal membership.

FIGURES have recently been released with regard to speeding fines imposed as a result of fixed radar speed traps installed by the Spanish traffic authorities on roads throughout the country.

Two of those located in the region of Murcia are among the 50 responsible for most motorists being caught and fined.

During 2019 almost three million

cameras on the roads, the top 50 were responsible for over 41 per cent of them.

The most productive camera in the region is located at kilometre 136 on the A-30 motorway to the north of the city of Murcia where the speed limit is reduced to 80 km/h.

A total of 15,993 fines last year came from this stretch alone.

Cat shelter build ALBERGUE Animal Shelter in Torrevieja has recently been tackling some renovations using funds and items donated by their loyal supporters.

Their new extension is taking shape due to t h e s h e e r h a rd w o r k and dedication of volu n t e e r, L i s a , w h o h a s given many hours of work. ‘The Shack’ uses

recycled bricks, chicken wire, floor tiles and wood to allow the cats to have more space, access to the sunshine and fresh air when they want to.

Lisa is not quite finished and intends to make further improvements, but needs a few items to do so. The shelter has asked that if anybody is getting rid

of kitchen units, work sur faces, storage units or anything else that they think will be helpful to build a space for both cats and dogs they can donate to them.

House break-in gang arrests

ORGANISED: The gang checked escape routes and occupants’ comings and goings before breaking in.

POLICE in Cartagena have arrested 10 members of a gang accused of breaking into at least eight homes on the Costa Blanca.

The thieves used the same method to break into all the properties: clambering over walls and breaking doors or windows on internal patios to avoid being seen.

According to police the criminal network pre-selected the property they were planning to hit. They would check out possible escape routes and take a note of the occupants’ usual comings and goings.

Contacts acting as informants would meanwhile keep them up-to-date on possible targets.

gang members also did carpentry jobs, taking advantage of being in people’s homes to carry out some kind of repair or job to make a note of information or to pocket items.

A raid on one of the gang leaders led to the seizure of cash, jewellery, mobile phones and other items directly linked to the break-ins.

Holiday home thieves caught out

SUSPECTS: Police believe the trio stole electronic goods and tools from the property.

THREE men in their e a r l y 2 0 ’s a re u n d e r arrest for breaking into a rural holiday home in the Sangonera la Seca area of Murcia at the end of last year.

Investigators detained the trio after identifying the vehicle used in the robbery, leading to the identification of one of the thieves and the

subsequent naming of the other two.

Police believe the three, all from Murcia City, got into the property by scaling the fence and breaking through an iron security grill and a window.

Once inside they grabbed electronic goods and tools, bunged them in their car and made off at high speed.

Police reported that as well as stealing items the robbers also caused considerable damage to the property.

Most of the items the thieves took have now been recovered, among them a TV, video console, a drill and a microphone.

According to police more than one of the detainees has a criminal record.

Viral danger IN WhatsApp chats as well as in social networks, a video showing three high school students involved in a new challenge, which could be dangerous and even cause severe injuries, has been doing the rounds.

In the video three students standing in line count to three, when the one in the middle jumps the two at his side kick away his legs causing him to fall on his back on the concrete to the laughs of the audience.

Although the origin of the video, or where it was recorded, is unknown, social

networks shared the video and made it a trend within hours. Police forces in Spain have reached out on Twitter to warn students and parents of the dangers.

Stop the pigeon NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a 53-year-old man accused of stealing six competition pigeons from an Elche home.

At the end of January, a complaint was filed at the National Police station of Elche in which the victim reported that six pigeons, all classified as high competition specimens and valued at more than €1,800 had been removed from inside a dovecote on the plot where he resides.

Therefore, police began an investigation, making multiple efforts to locate the perpetrator, as well as to recover the stolen birds.

ELECTRIC SCOOTER PROBLEMS: Attached to public fixtures.

Abandoned scooters THE government team in Elche has instructed the police to begin removing the electric scooters that are rented out by private companies, but are left unattended in public areas around different parts of the town.

The town council have made attempts to request that the service is withdrawn but to date has not found the solution.

The legal deadline to acknowledge the request has now passed, therefore

the government team has informed the Local Police to proceed with the removal of these electric scooters whenever they are attached to fences, lamp-posts or bicycle locking areas.

In addition, as explained by Esther DĂ­ez, councillor for Mobility, along with the decision not to allow the anchoring of rented electric scooters to public fixtures, the municipal department is working on the drafting of a regulatory order on the use of the electric scooter in the town.

THE Cardiovascular Surgery service of the University Hospitals of Vinalopo and Torrevieja, together with the University Hospital of Valencia, and other medical institutions in the area, have recently taken part in the third Cardiovascular Training Cycle in Applied Surgical Anatomy.

Tax time THE Tax department of the town council of Cartagena has announced that the voluntary payment period for the tax on vehicles is now open and will end on March 31. Once the deadline for voluntary payment is over, they will proceed to charge for the enforcement procedure and will include surcharges and late payment interest.

The tax can be paid through the collaborating groups listed in the letters of payment, Bankia, Banco Sabadell, Cajamar and Caixabank, on the days and hours established by them.

Rehomed after Dana AT the end of March the town council of Orihuela plans to transfer 16 people with disabilities who remain in a shelter in Guardamar del Segura after they were transferred there in November.

They had initially stayed in a hostel, a University residence and with several host families after the Centro Oriol was destroyed during storm Dana in September.

All of them, and eight others who remain with their families or guardians, will move to a house which the town council has rented on the Carretera de Hurchillo that will begin to be conditioned and adapted to accommodate the residents.

Half marathon

Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500.

MOTHER FINDS SON: Accidental death in bar.

BODY FOUND POLICE are investigating the death of a man of around 40 years of age whose body was found on Saturday mor ning in his bar in Lorca.

It was the victim’s 70year-old mother who found her son dead and

officers and paramedics who attended the scene also had to treat the woman as she suffered a serious anxiety attack.

The body was transferred to the Instituto de Medicina Legal, for an port-mortem. According to the early indica-

tions, it seems that the man, the owner of the bar, accidentally fell down the stairs as there were no signs of violence and the blood found was already coagulated.

The investigation will remain open until the coroner’s report is completed.

Fuel theft

TWO DETAINED: Well-known criminals.

THE Guardia Civil of Murcia recently took part in operation ‘Gaster,’ an investigation into the theft of diesel fuel from agricultural farms, which has resulted in the arrest of one person and the investigation of a second as alleged perpetrators of the crime of robbery.

The investigation began last January when officers

were alerted of a robbery committed on a farm, located in La Tercia, from which more than a thousand litres of diesel fuel were stolen. After examining the crime scene, a fenced enclosure that housed agricultural fuel tanks, officers gathered the necessary evidence and statements that allowed them to identify a vehicle that had been

seen nearby, with several individuals inside.

From the descriptions obtained, the officers recognised two wellknown criminals who had been arrested by the Guardia Civil in a previous operation. The police arrested a 49-year-old male of Spanish nationality, and are investigating a second man, aged 29, for their alleged involvement.

NO SCHOOL FACILITIES: Girl’s parents don’t want her education to suffer.

TEACHER SEARCH NIEVES NAVARRO, is a teenager from Cartagena whose life is not the easiest, as she suffers from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a genetic alteration that affects the synthesis of collagen in your body. As a result, the body’s joints tend to disjoint very easily, in addition to suffering loss of consciousness on a regular basis.

Having this disease makes it impossible for Nieves to go to school on a regular basis. Not only because some days she is too weak to attend class, but because the centre where she is enrolled, Ben Arabí de Cartagena, does not have their facilities adapted for students

with disabilities. Given this situation, Nieves has already had to repeat many of her classes.

Her parents do not want this to affect her education, and have asked for help from the Home Educational Service of Murcia, to find a teacher who can offer home schooling.

The community service is enabled to solve these types of cases. Especially in secondary education, if the student is unable to attend the centre and cannot receive adequate home schooling, they offer an online education programme. However, in this situation, Nieves requires a teacher. The problem, as the girl’s father said, is despite being paid work, officials are not obliged to accept the task.

MORE THAN 850 METRES LONG: Connecting the town with the sports centre.

ELCHE ON TRACK THE Provincial Council of Alicante has already begun the works of the pedestrian-cycling platform in La Hoya, which will connect the town centre with the sports centre.

The project, financed by the provincial institution, will serve so that “the children and adults of the district can travel to the sports centre to take part in their sports and leisure activities in a much safer and more comfortable way,” explained Councillor for Elche, Juan de Dios Navarro.

This new area, which will be more than 850 metres long, has an initial budget of €45,000.

He also confirmed that “the Diputación de Alicante continues to work for the citizens of Elche

and the province of Alicante, it is a commitment we had with the district and we have fulfilled it. This is our way of understanding and demonstrating politics: to meet and solve the problems that our residents have every day.

Wind power challenges ALTHOUGH windmills have existed in some form or other for thousands of years, the concept of wind turbines to generate electricity is relatively new and is about to cause some environmental problems.

Whilst far more efficient and green than burning coal in a power station, the wind turbines use blades which have a finite life and the older ones were pro­ duced in glass fibre which is hard to recycle.

Correos to be investigated THE Spanish National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) in its review of the pricing discounts offered to large customers including public administrations believes that the

One of the largest producers of wind turbines is Siemens Gamesa with its headquarters in Spain and they are tackling two pro­ jects, firstly to make the blades even larger and secondly to en­ sure that they are produced from carbon fibre and then try to find an efficient and easily recyclable alternative.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I REALLY do wish people would stop asking me why, as a resident of Spain, I should be writing and giving my opinions on events and situations that arise in the UK? Well, the simple answer to that is, it’s what I do.

I am still a very patriotic and staunch supporter of my birth country and, although I don’t actually reside there, I do visit on a fairly regular basis.

Because of my profession, I also often find myself travelling there quite extensively. Another more important advantage of being on the outside, looking in as it were, is that you can get a far broader and often more unbiased perspective of a situation - one that can often elude those who live in the confines of the same environment day in and day out. This brings me neatly into this week’s gripe.

Yet another prisoner on early release has been allowed to walk freely among innocent citizens and maim and injure before being shot dead. No doubt there was plenty of high fiving and ‘Al-

lah Akbars’ in a number of the British prisons holding a seething cauldron of fanatics who also can’t wait to get out and carve their own bloody path to Shangri la. And what ideas do the authorities come up with to

combat the problem? Well, quite frankly not a lot.

Adding 25 per cent to a sentence already cut in half, in the forlorn hope that it will give the luvvies more time to de-radicalise these people, simply doesn’t hack it. In the first place, it merely postpones the release of fanatics who will have become even more disgruntled and secondly; de-radicalisation is simply not an option. This twisted ideology is the very reason for their existence. It is all powerful. They actually want to die for it.

Dogma of this nature cannot be somehow conveniently exorcised. Even the peace loving Christians went to the lions rather than surrender their religion.

What the authorities need to do is get tough. First of all they must relieve these monsters of all their human rights. The introduction of a mandatory full 10-year sentence for any terrorist related offence, including the accessing or passing of terrorist propa-

ganda or its ideology in any form. Whole life sentences for all violent terrorist actions. Stopping all benefits and, as a deterrent, possible deportations of all the perpetrator’s close family members. (‘He was such a lovely boy’!)

The constructions of high security prisons, preferably on some uninhabited island, with solitary confinement, a minimum of association and communication and access to only limited privileges that have to be earned.

And most important of all, chipping. The obligatory insertion of a device that can not only track, but record all conversations between inmates. This should also remain for life should they ever be released. Inhumane? Tell that to the families of all the innocent loved ones who have been slaughtered by these scourges on our society.

THE first British cosmonaut Helen Sharman has said she believes aliens do exist, claiming extra terrestrials ‘could be living amongst us here on Earth,’ but have simply gone undetected thus far.

tion classics of the past like ‘The Invaders,’ ‘Invasion Of The Body Snatchers,’ ‘Quatermass 2,’ the alien invaders had the power to assume human form. Maybe some among the migrants amongst us aren’t just from other lands, but other planets? After all, according to the 2011 census, the UK alone underwent its biggest population surge after a decade of mass immigration.

Some even believe many ‘alien migrants,’ collectively, are known as Members of Parliament since they often sound like they’re on another planet. Well, perhaps that’s because they are.

Good grief! Next we’ll read northern Europe’s bad weather is the fault of aliens. Their UFOs moved the jet stream south.

Anyway, let’s hope they’ve brought their wellies and brollies with them if they’re visiting the UK at the moment.

Have I missed something?

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I USE a couple of online forums to ask about things that I’m not sure of. I’m careful what I put on there.

I try to be concise and to the point and, of course, look forward to any answers that may be given or comments on the posts. But what really gets on my nerves is the people that hijack the conversation by taking over my thread and sending it in a completely different direction. It happens all the time.

There has to be forum etiquette and it’s simple. If I ask about the correct air pressure to put in my tyres for a long journey to Portugal with a car full of people I have no desire to read about how your Aunt Fanny got her suitcase nicked at Faro airport OK? The annoying thing is that sometimes by the time I get back to read the answers to my question it’s now gone off in loads of different directions. I will, of course, just try and take it back with the one word reply to that person which is HIJACKER!

OK I may be taking a chance with this next grump but it has to be said. As I’ve mentioned before I was in the video business for over 20 years and in that time I watched thousands of movies as a buyer. Not once did I ever consider the race, religion or sexual persuasion of any actor, director, or come to that anything except was it a good movie. There is a lot of carrying on at the moment with the Baftas, Oscars and whatever other award is being given out, that there should be more women, people of colour and gay, plus any others I’ve missed nominated. My question is could it actually be a case that the movies, directors or stars that are being nominated are actually producing the best work? I’ve listened and read all the stuff people like Joaquin Phoenix has said and I’d hate it to go the other way and movies and the stars and directors were nominated because of all of the above reasons of colour, gender etc.

I don’t see Joaquin refusing any awards by the way or saying you know I think I’ll give this to so and so because their performance was far superior to mine. Oh and what’s with Joaquin curtseying when introduced to the Royals?

All these things contribute to our global footprint - that is the impact we as individuals, through our lifestyle, have on the planet.

But should we be made to feel guilty that living our lives is killing the planet and leading to the extinction of the human race?

According to Dr Guy Midgley, head of the climate change research group of the National Biodiversity Institute South Africa, we live on an unusually stable planet, but periods of cooling and warming naturally happen in cycles.

These periods of rising and falling temperatures over the last 500,000 years have been down to levels of methane and CO2 in the atmosphere which are not man-made. Also, levels of solar radiation vary over time and this has a significant impact on global temperatures, most notably in the Earth’s northern hemisphere.

Climate change experts believe we are currently between ice ages and that the development of modern industry has had a relatively minor impact on temperatures.

Over several thousand years in the earth’s history, temperatures have been higher than they currently are indicating that doing too many school runs or turning on the air con isn’t what’s going to wipe us out.

So, it’s not just our fault, but does that mean we should throw caution to the wind? Not at all. Reducing greenhouse gases will slow down global warming and, while we’re the planet’s dominant species, we should do all we can to save the planet.

After all, we’re only passing through.

PLANE SAILING DEAR Euro Weekly, With the majority of your readers taking flights backwards and forwards between their home country and Spain it has freaked me out a bit with all the recent news regarding aircraft.

Helicopter crashes, malfunctioning landing gear, diverted flights, planes that can’t handle the weather... is it now just a case of say your prayers and hope for the best if we want an easy way to travel? Surely there are enough people working in the aeronautics industry now we can fly more safely. Plane engineers making sure they are suitable to fly. Designers discovering ways to build making fail-safe planes.

Weren’t we all supposed to have our own rockets or jet boots by this point?

All joking aside, getting on a Ryanair flight is bad enough as it is, before worrying if the flight is going to crash. Maybe they could upgrade their cabins to give some comfort should you be on the last flight you ever take or will they just go the whole hog and replace your one bag allowance with space for a parachute?

Work woes HI Leapy, About right, I have worked in many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, but have only been discriminated against in Europe. I still have a letter from a major car manufacturer saying that I cannot be considered until their own citizens have all been employed. Basically their labour exchanges etc say the same thing.

BORN IN THE UK LEGENDARY singer Jeanette is making just three stops in Spain as part of a world tour, one of which will be at the Grand Theatre in Elche Costa Blanca on Sunday March 22 with tickets costing €22 online.

She has embarked on this world tour to celebrate her 50 years in show business with sell out concerts across the USA and British-born singer Jeanette Anne Dimech, known by just the name Jeanette found fame in Spain as a pop singer at an early age.

Her father was Maltese and her mother came from the Canary Islands and after a split in the marriage, she and her mother arrived in Spain when she was 12 and at that time Jeanette spoke only English, but soon found plenty of friends who helped her to becoming a fluent Spanish speaker .

She mainly sings in Spanish although she has recorded in English, French, Portuguese, German and Japanese and

has worked with such well-known names as Julio Iglesias and Sacha Distel.

At an early age, she wanted to become a professional singer and she loved the American folk music of the day with particular favourites Bob Dylan, The Byrds and Donovan and she started writing songs in that style and

Later she joined early Pic-Nic and had some chart success, but they eventually broke up and she returned to being a singer songwriter and her fame in Spain and South America grew so that she recorded seven albums in her own name.

Spanish Premiere FOUR years ago, highly regarded classical guitarist John Zaradin moved from the UK to Costa Blanca partly for the weather as he has suffered from problems which made it difficult for him to continue to play professionally.

Happily as he told Euro Weekly News in an exclusive interview, he is playing again but not to a standard that would allow him to perform in public, but he is a composer and for several years has been giving regular workshops to the East Helsinki Music School (IHMO) in Finland and was invited to compose a new piece for them.

This composition for guitar, strings and orchestra was premiered in Helsinki last October and the musicians who are aged between 12 and 18 will be touring Finland in March and

then travel to Spain in April for a short tour which takes them to Benidorm, Benidoleig and Torrevieja.

Although they have played in Denmark and Germany in the past travelling by coach, this is the first time that the youngsters have flown out of Finland and with two double basses and four cellos, plus the other instruments for the 33 members of the orchestra, this could prove something of a logistical problem.

Members of the Finnish community on the Costa Blanca as well as composer Zaradin are helping to get everything organised to make the arrival of these young musicians as trouble free as possible.

Full details of the performances will be given nearer the time.

THE company that manages La Zenia Boulevard near to Orihuela has come up with a novel idea to amuse and reward members of their Kids Club on St Valentine’s Day. It’s completely free as long as the children hunt in pairs and are members of the club and runs from noon to 8pm until Thursday February 13 and from noon to 4pm on St Valentine’s Day. Basically the children have to go to a number of different ports which are scattered around the shopping centre and have their boarding cards stamped at each site and answer a simple question at each port.

When the boarding card is complete, they simply go to the customer service point and hand in their card for checking.

If correct they will be given a heart-shaped key ring but even if they are wrong, they will have had fun and still receive a consolation lollipop.

FRESH FISH: A way to a healthy life.

Tapas route returns ONCE again residents of and visitors to the fishing village of Santa Pola can enjoy the special Tapeix tapas route for the 11th consecutive year, running from February 28 to March 18.

Peix refers to local fish included in the tapas route and 12 local bars and restaurants will be offering at least two different options using sea bass and gate.

The fish will be supplied free of charge to the different outlets by the local Brotherhood of Fishermen in or-

der to help promote the healthy eating of these two species.

In addition, those establishments taking part may offer a third tapas of their choice which should feature fish.

A special App will be made available by the council on February 27 giving full details of all of the outlets taking part and showing a suggested route for those who want to try everything on offer.

At the end of the event, dinner for two will be raffled at each of those bars and restaurants taking part.

Carnival is coming IT’S Carnival time on the Costa Blanca and

assuming that the rain stays away, the town of

San Miguel de Salinas will be celebrating on Saturday February 22.

The parade will start from the town hall and will head towards the Plaza Jaime I where there will be a show to entertain all who took part as a spectator or were in fancy dress.

Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.

The following Saturday, the Musical Union of San Miguel de Salinas will be presenting a tribute to the animated film songs composed by Óscar Navarro and both he and Paco Sáez will be celebrated following their recent Goya award.

Specifically, one person at the event told us that he had been told very good things about us from different sources and that when references are good from a number of sources, that is a sign of a good system, so he decided to visit us,” says Rocío Rodríguez, the head of Marketing at Check-in Scan. “It is very good to see first-hand the fruits of the business at this type of event.”

Rougher roads VOLKSWAGEN has unveiled the Taigun, a small SUV designed specifically for the Indian market and due to go into production in 2021, at the New Delhi Auto Expo. The production version of the Taigun will be the first Volkswagen launched under the VW Group’s ‘India 2.0’ project.

The new model, similar in size to the European-market T-Cross, is closely related to the Skoda Vision IN concept that has also been unveiled at the event. Both vehicles are built on a new local market version of Volkswagen’s MQB A0 modular platform and will be built alongside each other.

The Taigun is marginally longer than the T-Cross, with a wheelbase of 2,651mm. It also offers an increased 205mm of ground clearance, in order to better cope with India’s rougher roads. The exterior design is bespoke to the Taigun, with a more upright design than the T-Cross and greater use of chrome to reflect local tastes.

Inside, the concept features a digital instrument cluster and an 8.0-inch central touchscreen.

According to Autocar India, the Taigun will be powered by a 130hp, 1.5litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, with a CNG-powered version also being considered.

The Taigun and Vision IN will both gain ‘notchback’ variants - similar to the Brazilian VW Ventos - in the future. While the initial focus for both machines will be India, the VW Group could export them to similar markets including Brazil and South America - in the future.

Rivals include the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Range Rover Discovery yet Volvo’s XC models still stand out and have their own distinctive character and appeal.

There are several XC variants in petrol, diesel and mild-hybrid form, with multiple trim levels and prices from €45,903 (£38,715). The five-seat XC60 is a popular choice and my test model was a T5 in upper range R-Design trim with 2.0-litre 250 hp petrol engine, auto transmission and all-wheel drive.
