A MESSAGE from British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris to UK nationals in Spain The Withdrawal Agreement which sets out how the UK leaves the EU has now passed into UK law, which, once the European Parliament has ratified it this week, means the UK is leaving the EU with a deal on January 31. This is positive news for UK nationals who are resident in Spain, as the Withdrawal Agreement contains some important protections for your rights: • You will be able to continue to live and work in Spain • UK state pensioners will continue to have lifelong healthcare as long as they remain living in Spain. This also applies to residents who claim a UK state pension in the future • Your UK state pension will continue to be uprated • You will be able to exchange your driving li-

Those rights will be protected for as long as you live in Spain, provided you are legally resident here by the end of 2020. The Withdrawal Agreement also provides a Transition Period (from January 31 to December 31) during which nothing will change for UK Nationals in Spain. Sarah-Jane Morris said:

“The approval of the Withdrawal Agreement is a very important step for UK nationals living here. It provides reassurance on key rights, such as being able to continue to live and work here, and for pensioners to have lifelong healthcare and uprated pensions. Alongside those rights, you have obligations - the main one being to make sure you are registered with a green residency certificate. This remains a valid document after January 31 and we will commu-

nicate any future residency processes once we have them. Save the cats MEMBERS of the animal shelter of Santa Pola and other animalist groups gathered on Saturday at the doors of a villa which recently received an eviction order and where several cats have been locked up for more than one month. The purpose was to make this case visible and to rescue the animals. They placed banners on the fences of the house with messages such as ‘where are the keys’ or ‘if they had to pay rent they would already be out.’ The enforcers asked to perform the eviction did not notice there were animals inside and then the owner of the house could not enter days later after the locks were changed. To highlight the case, they read a manifesto in which they rebelled against the bureaucracy needed to act in this situation, and pointed out that they have exhausted all legal avenues to rescue the animals, with no success.

Need to look ahead VALENCIAN Community president Xim Puig called for unity from the Administrations and tourism sector. Speaking at the Fitur tourism trade fair in Madrid in the aftermath of Storm Gloria, Puig stressed the resilience of the Valencia region but said it was necessary to look ahead. It was essential to act rapidly, Puig said, so that the sector could recover and ensure that infrastructures were ready for Easter Week. “The last few days have been very hard for our beaches and tourist sector,” Puig admitted, but promised that the Generalitat would immediately roll out a government decree to help devastated areas. A council report presented on Monday to the Sub-delegation of the Government puts the damage to public spaces at €3,400,000, plus a further €600,000 to private properties. Elche mayor Carlos Gonzalez said municipal experts had “thoroughly studied the consequences of this terrible storm on the beaches and properties on the beachfront.” He stressed the local

authority is keen to get the municipal coastline back to normal as soon as possible, adding that as well as requesting assistance from the national government, his administration is also already working on cleaning up efforts. The mayor pointed out the severe impact of Gloria in the Pinet area, where the exceptionally high tides left a mess of seaweed, rubble and other objects and “left some properties practically inaccessible.” In Arenales the wind and the sea mainly damaged beach infrastructure like showers, feet washers and wooden walkways. The mayor said it would not take long to get the beaches looking shipshape again, but that the reconstruction of infrastructure would take longer. He said he hoped everything would be back as it should be by Easter.

School stress

Police chief pledge

CASES of anxiety, stress and loss of self-esteem among teachers in the region of Murcia have increased in the last school year as a result of the growing cases of cyberbullying and indiscipline among not only students but also their parents. This was announced on Monday by the ANPE union, which presented its report of the Ombudsman with the data of the 2018-2019 academic year. During the said school year, a total of 118 cases related to harmful behaviour in the classroom were registered, eight less than the previous year, but among which there is an increase in cyberbullying situations. In fact, of the total, 23 per cent corresponds to acts of harassment of teachers on the Internet and social networks, and 11 per cent to physical aggression and direct intimidation.

THE new Elche National Police superintendent has promised to act on organised crime in the area. Pedro Montore was sworn in to his new post on Monday in front of senior police officers, the Valencian Community Government Sub-delegate Juan Carlos Fulgencio and dignitaries from the legal sphere and civil society. He also identified combatting crime related to new technologies and protecting the most vulnerable groups of society like the elderly, children and abused women as priorities. Aged 48, Montore has been in the National Police force for 26 years, and has had previous postings in Navarra, Benidorm, Elda and Alicante. His challenge, he said, is to keep Elche “one of the safest towns in Spain,” and where possible, “improve it.”

CARNIVAL CELEBRATIONS: A month long programme packed with fun.

Carnival time TORREVIEJA is set to begin its annual carnival tomorrow Friday, January 31. It will run for a month until February 29 with a programme packed with fun for all the family. Over the following weeks, residents and visitors will see the streets of the town filled with fun, music, dancing and floats through the centre of Torrevieja. On Friday, January 31 at 9pm, the festivities begin with the Carnival Opening Speeches and presentation of the Carnival Queen in the Teatro Municipal. Followed by the Presentation and Corona-

tion of the Queens in the Teatro Municipal on Saturday, February 1 at 9pm. One of the most colourful events is on Saturday 8 at 9.30pm with the fantastic Drag Queen National Contest in the International Auditorio. However, the most important event is on Sunday, February 16 at 5.30pm, when the Grand Carnival Parade begins from the María Asunción Square. Finally, on Saturday, February 29 at 9.00pm, the National Competition of Chirigotas and Comparsas closes the carnival at the Teatro Municipal.

THE Paediatrics Service of the Hospital General Universitario de Elche is in the process of treating a seven-year-old patient diagnosed with a rare disease called ‘type I mucopolysaccharidosis.’ The little girl, Maria, receives enzyme replacement therapy, which consists of supplying the missing enzyme to the patient through a drip. The duration of the treatment process is long, the little girl arrives at hospital one day a week at 8.15am and leaves around 2.30pm. Aware that she is missing out on valuable school time, Maria had stated on several occasions that she would prefer to receive treatment in a classroom. Therefore it was arranged that teachers, Marisa Soriano and Belén Ramírez, perform learning activities and teach Maria and other children at the hospital.

This change allows her not only to continue with her school classes but to “forget where she is, play with other children and make a normal life,” says her mother, María Castell.

With the aim of increasing quality of care and life, and helping Maria normalise her weekly visit to the Hospital, the Servicio de Pediatría has fulfilled the patient’s desire.

Jail time for swindled Brit A NIGERIAN man found to have swindled a British citizen planning to buy a property in Torrevieja out of thousands has accepted the twoyear jail sentence agreed between the case prosecutor and his defence. BK was accused of getting his hands on €28,500 of the €58,000 the Brit sent for the house purchase. He recognised that after gaining access to the email which the buyer used to communicate with a notary in the UK, a message was sent to the complainant to give them the details of a bank account in which to make the deposit. The account was not in fact the notary’s, but one which BK had opened in a bank in Jumilla in Murcia.

CHARGES: The Nigerian was accused of getting his hands on €28,500. The prosecutor concluded that either BK or another person acting under his authority had sent the email. As well as the

jail time, the agreement includes a fine and the payment of €28,500 compensation to the complainant.

FOR LOVE OF THE GAME By Damon Mitchell

EURO WEEKLY NEWS had the pleasure of talking to British expat Sheila Clifford this week. Sheila is one of the only female members of the Walking Football League Spain and at 62 years old she is first to admit that her body feels a little slower. But her mind is well and truly in the game! Growing up in South London she considered herself a bit of a tomboy. She would rush home from school to play football with the boys on the council estate. Each block of flats would play against the other with the caretaker as referee, however, he wouldn’t let her play in the bigger games because she was a girl and in those day’s football was thought to be a boys sport. Being such a valued player her playmates even offered to pretend she was a boy, so she didn’t miss out. One day, she heard that they were holding trials for Chelsea women’s team and with her

The team was unstoppable and used to train on Clapham Common and then Hackney Marshes. Sheila has many fond memories of her time with Chelsea but when asked by EWN of her proudest she said: “One that stands out is in my Chelsea days is when we played QPR’s A team in the five-a-side semi-final. QPR was

unbeatable every year, but we were youngsters and well-skilled we beat them, and we were so proud. We went on to play their B team in the final the next week and beat them too.” After a time she moved to Bournemouth and began working as a Drug and Alcohol Support Worker in the prison service. Her football career had gone on the back burner but here she found they had a Prison Service national team and her passion was reignited.

The team was invited to play in Australia in a worldwide championship that included players from all the emergency and prison services. Not only was it a trip of a lifetime but her team won the Gold medal. Sheila moved to Spain from Bermuda just over two years ago in September 2018. She now lives in Riogordo village, Malaga but unable to slow to a Spanish pace she wanted to find something to do with her time and keep her active.

Her friend Paddy recently introduced her to Walking Football which is aimed at people over 50 who want to continue to play the game they love but without the running and the contact involved with normal football. She trains with the players every Thursday and just played her first official match with team Aston Viñuela where she scored a goal for the winners. The club has allowed her to make new friends like her other female teammate Julie Pollitt and given them a social platform that includes the game they are so passionate about. Sheila is so passionate about the sport and plays in her favourite team’s colours, no not Chelsea blue but Manchester United red. She points out “I love football, playing it, watching it and can talking about it to anybody.” And goes on to say, “I don’t have any regrets but I wish I was born 40 years later. Look at it today there are so many opportunities for girls now.”

Career opportunities THE Sef, scheduled this year, from February, offers 13 specific training projects for people older than 45 years who are in a situation of long-term unemployment. Specifically, they will be actions that will focus on the professional reintegration of the approximately 500 participants, alternating theoretical training with development workshops, seminars, practices or tutorials, as reported by the Ministry of Employment, Research, and Universities. This is a more detailed training than the usual training courses, since this group, due to its special difficulties in accessing the labour market, needs individualised support that covers various areas of learning and guidance. Five of the projects will be held in Murcia, two in Cartagena, and one respectively in Yecla, San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcázares, Moratalla, Totana, and Jumilla.

THE councillor for Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, has announced the celebration of the traditional Medieval Market of Orihuela, which this year celebrates its 22nd edition and whose route will cover from the Puerta de la Olma (Crevillente Gate), located in the vicinity of the College Diocesan Santo Domingo, to the Plaza del Carmen during the weekend from Friday, January 31 to Sunday, February 2. It is “a thematic market

full of originality, quality in animation, magic, illusion and the enjoyment of children and the general public is sought,” as indicated by the mayor of Festivities. She also added that this edition “will have high-level musical and theatre shows, exhibitions, workshops and artisans of great quality” which will allow Oriolanos and visitors to enter the medieval society thanks to the atmosphere that will be on the streets.

PACTO POR EL MAR MENOR: Problem areas of the town most affected by floods.

Residents demonstrate SOME 2,200 residents of the Mar Menor demonstrated on Sunday in Los Alcazares, demanding that the public administrations urgently take measures in the upper and middle sections of the Ramblas to avoid new floods. Convened by the Stop Flooding platform in Los Alcázares with the support of the council and the environmental group Pacto por el Mar Menor, they travelled the problem areas of the town most affected by floods at the mouth of these channels, because although the rainfall is not constant, the

clogging of the natural course of the Ramblas which drain into the salt lagoon blocks the flow of higher areas. The Murcian districts of Sucina, Avileses and Garrucha, were among other points cited by the president of Asociación de Afectados por las Inundaciones, Santiago Pérez, who has exclaimed to the residents during the reading of the final manifesto: “Enough of immobility!” He went on to point out that “rains of 60 or 70 litres per square metre that have always been a blessing” for this region of

the Campo de Cartagena “but they become floods in villages that in turn carry contaminated water” by nitrates from agricultural fertilizers “which end up in the Mar Menor, an ecosystem that is in ruins.” The mayor of Alcazar, Mario Pérez Cervera, claimed that they are aware of the problem and they will continue supporting the residents in the street until a solution is given and put into practice as soon as possible, “because everything that has happened can happen again and we want this injustice to end,” he said.

have increased in value by €20,000 or more. • You are no longer the owner of the assets due to sale or transfer (even if disposed of at a loss). • You previously didn’t have assets to the value of €50,000 in any one or more of the three groups, but an increase in value during the year has taken the asset value over the €50,000 threshold. There are quite heavy fines for those who knowingly or unknowingly don’t submit this form to the authorities and the form itself is relatively complicated, so in the first instance it may be advisable to take professional advice concerning completion. BREXIT BRIEF

The Irish question remains DESPITE assurances from Prime Minister Boris Johnson that there will be no check points for goods in Northern Ireland, the European Union has produced a map showing examples of where they should be! In essence, goods being sent from British ports to Belfast will be subject to EU rules and will need to be checked by British customs and the same will be true of goods coming from Northern Ireland to the UK. the BBC, Irish Taoiseach (prime minister) Leo Varadkar claimed that UK politicians didn’t understand Ireland at all and that the future of the Irish border was central to trade deal negotiations. He went on to confirm that it was clear in the agreement with the EU that there will have to be some checks on goods being transported between the UK mainland and Northern Ireland. Although there is to be a general election in Ireland on February 8, Mr Varadkar is quite buoyant about being re-elected and being involved in ongoing trade negotiations and is meeting EU negotiator Michel Barnier in Dublin. Mr Varadkar believes that the British prime minster is greatly mistaken in believing that a trade deal will be possible to agree during 2020 and sees it taking longer. He explained that Europe is in the driving seat with a population of 450 million people and 27 countries against the UK and 60 million and therefore as in the FA Cup, the EU will field a much stronger team.

AGREEMENT: The governing team approved a 2 per cent rise in wages for civil servants.

Council salary rise cost THE increase in Elche Town Council staff salaries will add in the region of €1 million to local authority costs this year, press reported. The governing team last week accepted a Council of Ministers agreement and approved a 2 per cent rise in wages for civil servants, which will also benefit councillors and consultants, and which will come into effect in their January pay. The rise could go up to 3 per cent after July in accordance with forecasts for

GDP, as set out in the agreement with the central government. Elche government spokesman Hector Diez justified the salary increase, commenting that the agreement with the national administration had been outstanding since 2018. Diez described the agreement as “important,” and said it represented a step forward “given that public civil servants’ salaries had been frozen for many years, and therefore this agreement is on the line of recovering acquisitive power.”

TAKING PART: Raising awareness of the risks of dependence.

IN Lorca 1,500 young people participated in the programme ‘Knock down your wall, addictions of the 21st century’ through which they have been made aware of the risks of dependence on certain behaviours. The councillor for Health and Youth of Lorca, José Ángel Ponce, stated that “The objective of this pro-

gramme is to delve into the solution to what is already a social problem that we accept, little by little, within our model of society and family, without taking into account the consequences that there are in the short and long term, as well as the collateral damage that we are already seeing in our youth, so we must intervene and

provide the tools to handle it.” Ponce also explained that “During these days actors, addicts, psychologists in this field, people from the world of gambling, and representatives for the youth of the region are giving talks to the educational community including students, parents, and teachers.”

A NEW collective has been launched in Elche created by a group of professionals with the objective of ‘helping the strategic development of Elche, its metropolitan area and its area of influence, contributing to the development and promotion of a future strategy for the town.’ The Instituto Ciudad Idea Elche - ICIE Elche is a nonprofit association that began to take shape in September and aims to be a meeting point for all those people and entities committed to the future of Elche the area. The institute suggests that ‘the strategic development of our city must be based on broad participation, consensus, and private-public cooperation.’ They also propose ‘a concentric model as a more sustainable model,’ as well as the ‘elabora-

tion of strategic plans that establish short, medium and long term objectives and that go beyond the term of a legislature.’ The group also defends the metropolitan area of Elche and its area of influence, as well as establishing a real relationship of collaboration and development with its surroundings. In this sense, they understand that ‘the group formed by the metropolitan area of Elche and by the metropolitan area of Alicante (named as Functional Area Elche - Alicante) are the main engine of our province and that the establishment of a real relationship of collaboration and development between these metropolitan areas will boost the economic development of our province and will serve as a pole of attraction for public and private investments.’

The mayor and the councillor also revealed Orihuela appears in the magazine ‘Destinos Gastronomicos.’ The article talks about the historic town centre, the municipality’s natural heritage, its offer of sun and sand and its fiestas declared of National Tourist Interest, among them the Moors and Christians. Unsurprisingly there is a particular emphasis on the locality’s cuisine and typical dishes made from local produce, including artichokes, broccoli and citrus fruit, as well as its cakes.

Mother detained for abandoning baby NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a woman in Orihuela for abandoning her newborn baby on a doorstop. A resident walking their dog found the baby wrapped in several layers of clothes inside a plastic bag and in good health, on the afternoon of January 17. Surveillance camera

Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain W I T H B re x i t p o s s i b l y a ro u n d t h e c o r n e r, i f y o u h a v e l e s s than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a

white background, a selfie taken with a phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

CHANGING FACE OF THE AREA: Archaeological excavations.

Back to normal THE town council of Elche has set the ball rolling to try to return the Mercado Central area to ‘normal,’ while the procedures for completing the contract continue. The government team has pushed a project costing €49,000 to remove the fence that surrounds the building of supplies and cover the archaeological excava-

After refusing that company, Aparcisa should take charge of these works because it considers that it is against the contract, the Council will assume them in a subsidiary manner and then pass the invoice to the company. Therefore, throughout February the local executive will con-

tract the works with the commitment to change the image of this area in the first quarter of the year. This will come as good news to residents and businesses that have been suffering from open ditches for years because of the archaeological works that have brought to light five centuries of history, such as the 120 Islamic burials and ancient constructions.

New cash for Abertis THE Spanish tollroad op erator Abertis has to raise more funds by way of bank loans and increased bond issues as it struggles to reduce its operating costs.

Much was made of the takeover by Italian com pany Atlantia which is it self facing financial prob lems with the threat of the loss of a number of its Italian tollroads.

Abertis is taking action to ensure that the Italian parent doesn’t call on it for additional funding and has also purchased a com pany in Mexico which it hopes will help cash flow.

New UK overdraft rates WHEN you consider that the Bank of England Base Rate is just 0.75 per cent and savers are doing well to obtain interest at 3 per cent, consumers must be wondering how the High Streets banks can justify introducing new overdraft rates of almost 40 per cent! The Financial Conduct Authority instructed the banks to be more transparent with charges for unau thorised overdrafts and accepted that there might be some need to increase approved overdraft rates but apparently relied on the expec tation that banks would be com petitive keeping down costs.

NEW RATES: Banks could be on to another good thing

Unemployment down in 2019 THE latest survey on employment in Spain, published by the National Statistics Institute, showed that by the end of 2019 unemployment had dropped to 13.78 per cent, the lowest annual fig-

ure since 2008. With the creation of 402,300, the total number unemployed in Spain is now 3,191,900 but the 2019 new jobs total is the lowest since 2014 and a large amount

still encompasses temporar y jobs based on the run up to Christmas. Andalucia has seen the largest fall in unemployment with 41,900 people finding jobs.

They are now surprised to dis cover that the majority of banks have settled on an annual rate of between 39 and 40 per cent and have asked the banks to explain their thinking behind both the charges and the lack of competi tion. In addition, they have asked how the banks will deal with those who are worse off under the new sys tem and their response will be awaited urgently by those who may be affected. When many banks introduced daily charges it was clear that there was an overall increase to the con sumer and now if these new rates go through unchanged, an autho rised overdraft is likely to be more expensive than using a credit card. Whilst there may be savings for those who used unauthorised over drafts, it is estimated that around 19 million people who have ac counts with UK banks have autho rised overdrafts and it could mean that they will be paying £400 (€450) interest on every £1,000 (€1,150) they borrow from the banks.

BUSINESS EXTRA 5G CHINESE telecoms firm Huawei will be allowed to take a limited role in the creation of UK 5G networks despite demands from the USA that they be banned from involvement. Republicans suggest this may hurt potential US/UK trade deals.

Car share SPANISH car share business Emov, which runs mainly electric cars in Madrid has revealed in its latest returns that it lost €2.6 million in 2018, following a 2017 loss of €1.5 million. A new Portuguese venture cost €1 million.

Super saver SAINSBURY’S, Britain’s second largest supermarket chain has pledged to spend £1 billion (€1.15 billion) in order to ensure that by 2040, its net carbon emissions are reduced to zero, but this does not cover the emissions produced by its suppliers.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT IF the UK doesn’t grow some cahonies and get a grip it will drown under a suffocating morass of political correctness from which it will never emerge again. This latest directive truly does take the whole tin. The utterly common sense starved British plod, is now encouraging members of the public to report ‘hateful white people, even if they have committed no crime’! They have actually released a short cartoon video, which depicts a number of extreme acts by snarling white thugs as examples of the ‘hate’ they consider unacceptable. One shows a man pulling off a Muslim woman’s hajib. Another depicts a crew cut individual abusing a black shopkeeper and a further example demonstrates a crestfallen black schoolboy being refused permission to board a bus. Can’t these naive morons get

BRITISH PLOD: Have released a short cartoon video.

into their thick, left wing biased mentality, that this ‘cartoon’ is in itself reverse racism at its very worst? Can they also not understand quite how open to abuse a directive of this nature can be? This is an invitation for all ethnic minorities to report

the white population for just about anything they consider not quite to their liking. An opportunity to create a positive tsunami of time wasting frivolous racist accusations. How long before the complaints begin to pour in that

someone felt they were, looked at in a ‘wrong way’ or ‘bumped into’ purposely? We already had the case of the Muslim person who considered a driver honked his horn aggressively. That accusation could be considered a near homicide compared to the level of nonsense claims that could now almost certainly descend on the authorities. Can our esteemed snowflake appeasers also not understand that rubbish of this ilk drives even more of a wedge between the beleaguered indigenous population and its ethnic counterparts; pushing them even further apart? And what about the other way around? What about the highly objectionable verbal accusations of being ‘privileged white men,’ publicly voiced by black lady TV panellists of late? I don’t hear anyone complaining about these blatant racist outbursts. Well of course

not. Can’t upset the minorities can we? Thank the Lord that with my choice of residence I don’t have to put up with it all. Mind you, only last week I was actually told to ‘go back to my own country.’ Although I am aware that there are recourses in Spain for this type of behaviour, I simply shrugged it off as an ignorant isolated remark. A brainwashed UK citizen would probably have run crying to the authorities and got the perpetrator six months! Fortunately Spain has got its priorities right. Not a great deal of ‘nanny state’ nonsense over here, I’m delighted to say. What a shame the country I love has got it all so wrong, and allowed the snowflakes and ‘wokers’ to bring it to its knees. Live on air Friday 1pm till 3pm. Spanish time. Google ‘ExPat radio.UK.’ And a Happy Brexit to you all! Keep the faith. Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com.

PODCASTS & PLAYLISTS FOR POOCHES NORA JOHNSON BREAKING VIEWS Nora is the author of popular psychological suspense and crime thrillers and a freelance journalist. To comment on any of the issues raised in her column, go to www.euroweeklynews.com/3.0.15/nora-johnson

THE world’s largest audio streaming company, Spotify, has launched five-hour aural experiences to alleviate stress for dogs while their owners are at work. ‘My Dog’s Favourite Podcast’ includes messages of comfort and reassurance (recorded by actors) such as: ‘I’d stay here and stroke you all day long if I could.’ And: ‘It makes me so happy to start the day off seeing your happy face.’ Plus: ‘You just take it easy today. This is your chance for some well-earned me time.’ Spotify is also launching a Pet Playlists feature based on a user’s musical tastes and their animal’s personality. In other words, users who say their cat is shy and withdrawn will be recommended different songs from those who say their pet is active.

Personally, someone saying: ‘You just take it easy today. This is your chance for some well-earned me time’ is not what I like to hear on podcasts, but I suppose a dog’s tastes are quite different! I’d imagine enthusiastic assurances about how ‘tasty’ their supper will be would be more effective (as long as it doesn’t sound too much like a script for a Donald Trump pep rally. Talking of whom, considering that my frying pan needs replacing, does anyone know where his Teflon coating comes from?). And another thought. Wouldn’t natural sounds make lonely dogs feel happier, rather than unfamiliar actors’ voices? A neighbour tried similar stress-alleviation videos for cats on YouTube on their moggies. After a few minutes they lost interest and sloped off in such a low energy way they could win a climate change award. I wonder what effect playing YouTube has on dogs? As for my parents’ dogs, leaving Radio 3 switched on worked a treat. PET PLAYLIST: Based on an animal’s personality.

They (the dogs, that is) preferred that to the endless adverts on Classic FM. But as for the rest of it - aromatherapy, mental health therapy and general canine counselling well, they’d tell you that’s: ‘barking mad. What a load of Shih Tzu.’ And as for me, a few minutes of the Shipping Forecast and I’m out like a light... Nora Johnson’s psychological crime thrillers ‘Betrayal,’ ‘The Girl in the Woods,’ ‘The Girl in the Red Dress,’ ‘No Way Back,’ ‘Landscape of Lies,’ ‘Retribution,’ ‘Soul Stealer,’ ‘The De Clerambault Code’ (www.nora-johnson.net) available online as ebook (€0.99;£0.99), ibook, paperback and audiobook. All profits to Costa del Sol Cudeca cancer charity.

Now the UK is on course for Brexit on January 31, 2020, are we any closer to knowing what this means for your Travel and Travel Insurance? It’s refreshing that we can bring you some firm news of what to expect. The UK now enters an official transition period until the end of December 2020. Guidance from Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) is things won’t change during this time - so Brits can continue travelling as you do now until December 31, 2020. Respite indeed given the potential chaos of previous ‘no deal’ scenarios.

EWN 47

Until this date, trains, planes and coaches will still operate; rules on taking pets abroad don’t change; you won’t need a VISA, nor International Drivers Permit or Green Card for car insurance; the EHIC remains valid. The sad fact is, we still don’t know the impact of Brexit on travel and travel insurance after the implementation period. It’s well worth buying your travel insurance before it ends to lock-in reliable cover. Globelink products are underwritten through Lloyds, who’ve already confirmed they will ho-

nour all commitments, including paying valid claims. The UK offers more Travel Insurance choices than any other country with products among the best in the world. If you’re an EU resident, you may have less options after December 2020 because of changes in trading rules. Limiting choice is never good for consumers, so buy your travel insurance, or renew your Annual Multi Trip Policy in good time. What travel insurance should I buy? Everyone’s needs are differ-

ent, but always look beyond the eye-catching headlines so you get what’s right for you. Everyone needs essentials, like Emergency Medical Expenses including Repatriation and a 24-Hour Helpline. If travelling twice or more a year, opt for Annual Travel Insurance - it’s cheaper. Travel as often as you like on a Globelink Annual Policy. Think about luggage value. You’ll be surprised how it adds up. Beware of Insurance ‘single article limits’ - you may have items worth more. Check the ‘total valuable limit’ - your accumulated valuables could exceed this. Think about special requirements like pre-existing medical conditions. It’s imperative you comply with the Travel Insurers declaration requirements to avoid the risk of your policy being invalidated. What do get up to while away? Whether snorkelling, hill

walking, golfing, sailing or horseriding, check you’re covered. You’re more at risk of injury while participating. Globelink covers 100 Adventure Activities free. Considering a cruise? Don’t miss a trick when searching for insurance. Tour operators inevitably charge the earth, while others make you pay extra for the privilege. Look for providers who offer Free Cruise Cover as standard, like Globelink, so you’re covered if tempted by a cruise trip. Already travelled? Forgotten travel insurance? If you or your loved ones have travelled without insurance, never fear. Globelink are one of the few companies offering Already Travelling Insurance. That’s another good reason why it’s worth investing in Annual Multi Trip cover, so you don’t have to worry whenever you travel! Wherever you chose, check FCO’s travel advice.

Too much choice of everything MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’VE never been much use at DIY. In fact, I can just about spell it! One of the reasons is all the tools you need. A perfect example of this is screwy things and my major problem is why can’t there be just one type? Let me explain. One of the folding handles on my wheelchair became loose and fell out. I found it, put it back in and went to get my Swiss army knife which is my entire tool kit. I then found it needed something called an Allen key which was obviously invented by some geezer called Allen. I just googled it and it was! Anyway, I didn’t have one or anything that would tighten up this thing. Which made me think, why do we have to have so many different heads on these bolts and screws? There is Phillips, posidrive, flat head, Allen what’s the point? Why not just have one? Do we really need bugle heads, round head, pan head, button head and, of course, my personal favourite

the flange head. I’m sure some expert will tell me it’s all about torque, but la la la la I’m not listening. There is too much choice of everything. Take coffee - all you need is black or white not 12 varieties that Starbucks do. And, for sure, why do we need a coffee called Kopi Luwak which is made from... wait for it cat poo! All the poncey names too. All of a sudden Doris the tea lady has become a Barista. I thought that was someone who defended you in court when you have been knicked. I don’t know what’s happening with government run stuff here. I still haven’t got my Spanish driving licence which I applied for last May. So technically I can’t drive anywhere except Spain. Tried to book my car in for ITV and was told it might get done in March even though it runs out end of January. Surely it can’t all to be to do with Brexit? I’ve been watching the Trump impeachment on TV and find it fascinating. I also listen to him speak and read his Twitter rants. And that’s what they are - Fox fed rants. I still can’t understand how anyone can really believe he is the greatest POTUS ever, but they do. Just remember whether Trump is found guilty or not - he’s guilty!

SCOOTER MADNESS DEAR Euro Weekly, I am writing to you regarding electric scooters, which are all the trend right now. They are dangerous things that shouldn’t be allowed. If you allow them on the pavements you get people with serious injuries and the drivers facing jail time. If you allow them on the roads, you get accidents and people on scooters getting killed. It’s a lose-lose situation either way. I don’t think bike lanes are a good idea either, apart from the fact that people on scooters seem set on disobeying the law. The only viable solution is a lane specific to scooters, and I can assure you tax payers don’t want to finance that! For now, the simplest resolution is to ban them completely. Of course, they aren’t our biggest problem, but they are a problem. Let’s get rid of them once and for all, please! Tony Richards Torrox Costa

No need for weed EURO WEEKLY, There is an issue that needs to be addressed by all of us. Marihuana is a powerful drug that is absolutely rampant in most countries. In the UK it’s also a big problem, although maybe its consumption is more private than here in Spain. I live close to the centre of Alicante and I smell it almost every time I’m out and about. I’m not condemning the use of marihuana in any way, and I believe that it can be good for things like Parkinson’s. But there needs to be control over the use of this powerful drug. At what point did smoking marihuana become normalised? It’s not the same as smoking a cigarette and we need to remind the younger generation of this. Governments need to step their game up and put laws in place that can control the situation. In this day and age, it should be possible to stop the crime and devastation surrounding this drug. Frustrated, Alicante

ELECTRIC SCOOTERS: Let’s get rid of them once and for all!

Joining together DEAR EWN I’m glad that as a mostly British community we are also getting stuck in with our Spanish compatriots. In Costa Blanca in Orihuela we are now battling the new multilingualism laws that have been approved for the upcoming school year. As parents, we are pretty worried how this will affect our children. My wife and I have two children in school who speak Spanish almost

HAVE YOUR SAY

fluently, but barely any Valencian. Classes in Valencian would be very hard for them, and me and my wife already discussed moving them to a British school. Despite these struggles, the recent protests have been really nice for us in the community. As we all joined together to fight this ludicrous law, my family and I felt very much part of the Orihuela community! Ed Thomas, Orihuela

Awards season THIS week, Deborah Dugan, the former CEO of the Recording Academy, the body that oversees the Grammy Awards, filed a discrimination lawsuit against her former employer days ahead of the annual ceremony. It included allegations of gender discrimination, and corruption, casting a shadow of doubt and mistrust on the award system revered as music’s highest honour. Dugan mentions in her claims that huge worldwide artists of colour such as Beyoncé, Kanye West, and Mariah Carey, were snubbed in previous years, and that the biggest awards tend to go to rock, country, and pop artists. She then outlined how the Grammy voting process is allegedly tainted. Submissions for awards are initially voted on by members of the Academy, however, once these nominations are whittled down, the board promotes artists they have relationships with, and ‘manipulates the nominations process’ to include artists they want to perform during the ceremony. In her legal filing, Dugan blamed the ‘boys’ club’ mentality of executives as influential factors that were ultimately reflected in the voting process for annual Grammy nominations. During Dugan’s short time as CEO of the Academy, she was adamant about making changes to address public concern that the Grammys were becoming outdated and failed to showcase a more diverse pool of musicians. The Recording Academy denied the rigging accusations in a statement saying, “Spurious allegations claiming members or committees use our process to push forward nominations for artists they have relationships with are categorically false, misleading and wrong.” With shadows cast over many of these long-running awards ceremonies can they ever go back to awards for pure merit?

Internet Safety Corner What you need to know about ‘IoT’ and how it could affect you

INTERNET OF THINGS (IoT) devices and gadgets are increasingly creeping to the top of the wish lists for Christmas presents, birthday gifts and others are simply saving up to get some of these great devices. IoT devices cover a massive variety of primarily ‘connected’ devices from Laptops, Home Automation, TVs, Speakers, Health & Fitness gadgets and Sensors to drones or even connected toys. Many of us love the idea of having cool gadgets we can connect to the internet, but do we all know how they work or what vulnerabilities we could be exposed to? IoT (Internet of Things) devices. It is impossible to list the

amount and variety of IoT devices available today in the marketplace. From wearable gadgets, connected fridges, home automation sensors, cameras, smartphones, tablets to media players and all kinds of gadgets we can connect to the internet. Each one of these IoT devices is engineered and designed to somehow ‘make life better’ and the chances are their good intentions are 100 per cent legitimate. The problem is that in this price competitive field, there are thousands of different electronic components that can be chosen by the manufacturers to build their devices. Some have huge budgets to run se-

curity checks but others do not. The bottom line is that our IoT devices may have electronic components which may or may not have known vulnerabilities. Once your cool gadget is ‘connected’ to your network it may perform just as expected, but if you are unlucky, it could also be a ‘trojan horse’ inside your network! What damage can this do? No matter how much effort you have put into building yourself a nice and secure network, it takes just one ‘cool gadget’ to create a vulnerability which could be harmless or become a serious problem. For example, you buy a nice and cheap smoke sensor online for your home and you

connect it to your WiFi so it can alert you anytime. If you are unlucky, this smoke sensor could have exploitable electronic components which might be known to hackers and keep a ‘door open’ to your network. This could allow a hacker to access your home network through the smoke sensor to then have access to files on your computers or even view video footage of your webcam. If you have home automation devices, a hacker could disable alarms or sensors. The damage ranges from loss of privacy to stealing data or access to your property. What can you do to reduce the risks? As usual, the chances are

very low that you could be a target for any kind of ‘hacking’ even if you did have an IoT device with a security vulnerability, but it is important you have at least some kind of idea of how they work and how it could affect you. We would recommend you purchase IoT devices from manufacturers you feel you can trust, companies who have cutting edge safety and security procedures and invest heavily in production. The truth is this is all still too new to know for sure, so think about what you buy, if you really need it, if they really need to be connected and if you feel you can trust the company who manufactured it!

We sincerely hope this information was useful and we look forward to sharing some more tips with you in due course. Article by: Mike from Direct Telecom

FOR NEXT 7 DAYS AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) When it comes to throwing wobblers, please don't. It is so important this week to stay cool and unruffled. Change nothing that you can avoid changing. Even having discussions about change can set your nerves jangling.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) This month, there is much to be celebrated. So much has happened in the latter part of the year. Certainly, congratulations are in order. When you have made such an effort and are rewarded for it, the satisfaction level is high. Be aware, though, that someone close also needs to feel that there is progress.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) The importance of making the right choices is clear to you. Where to begin seems to be a sticking point. Starting by taking away the things you really do not want is essential. Be practical and logical. This is not a time for sentiment or muddled thinking. Although you will need patience in abundance as the week progresses, take one thing at a time.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Although you have the feeling that younger members of the family are not interested in your point of view, this is far off the mark. They, in their inexperience, may not know how best to approach you in this regard. Getting out family photos or starting a family tree with them can be both entertaining and fascinating.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) The prospect of travel sets you thinking. Have you been spending too much time considering others? Should you take steps now to get time alone then these plans cannot be changed. This will save any discussions as to how or when.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) With the best will in the world it is only possible to spend money once. We are all guilty of trying to get over this truth, but it never works. Have patience when looking to improve your possessions. There are more pressing needs and these, in the long run, prove more satisfying.

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Going over old ground is counterproductive. There is nothing to be gained from repeating methods that did not work in the past. If it is not possible to find a fresh approach then seek the opinions of others. You do not need experience of a situation to be able to come up with a useful idea. Staying in the same old rut has not served you in the past and will not do so now.

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) Getting together with others to entertain is sure to be successful after the 26th. Before that there may be some irritations, particularly with people who refuse to be positive and make decisions. Little smokers ALMOST half of the children admitted to hospital for asthma are passive smokers, according to a study conducted at the Gregorio Maraùón Hospital in Madrid. The information coincides with data given by the World Health Organisation, that states 40 per cent of children are exposed to passive smoking at home. In Spain, the prevalence of childhood asthma is estimated at around 10 per cent. Up until now, it was known that babies born of smoking mothers had diminished lung function and that children exposed to passive smoking also suffered an alteration of their lung capacity. The study analysed the situation of 365 children who, at some time between 2011 and 2015, were admitted to hospital due to an asthmatic crisis. It revealed that 41 per cent of children who had severe asthmatic crises were subjected to passive smoking at home. The average age of patients in the paediatrics ward was five and the dura-

tion of their admission was four days. Doctors observed that children exposed to smoke had lower oxygen saturation at the time of admission, as well as more severe crises and worst lung parameters. It was also noted that the asthma was more acute when the father was a smoker, compared to the mother. The information from the investigation was presented in a scientific letter, published in the journal of the Spanish Society of Paediatric Pulmonology. Doctors explain that asthma and passive smoking are a worrying combination. Children who suffer from bronchial hyperreactivity are more sensitive to environmental pollutants, including tobacco smoke, that increases airway inflammation and causes a limitation of air flow.

AT RISK: Children who are passive smokers lose lung capacity.

THREE MILLION people in Spain suffer from osteoporosis, a degenerative disease that affects the density and quality of the bones. The name literally translates to ‘porous bone’ and causes bones to become increasingly fragile. It is this fragility in the bones that causes them to fracture easily. In Spain, more than 330,000 bone fractures are called by the disease every year, especially in the hips and forearms. The danger of the condition is the difficulty to detect it. It is generally asymptomatic and only begins to show once its in an advanced state, preventing doctors from slowing its evolution. The main cause of bone deterioration is age and it begins to appear in people over 60. The body absorbs calcium to keep bones strong, but over time the absorption capacity decreases and bones become less dense. In addition to age, there are many other factors that can contribute to the onset of osteoporosis. Being a woman is one of the main factors, as the disease mainly affects women, while men only have a 13 per cent risk. Having a family history, being underweight, smoking, excessive alcohol and coffee consumption can also

Fracturing affliction

PREVENTION: Exercise, sun and fatty fish can help to halt osteoporosis.

IT is suggested that you get six to eight hours of sleep every night so as not to deprive your body of nourishment as sleep replenishes the nutrients that your body, brain, and skin need. During a good night's rest, your body works to remove dead blood cells and dead brain cells. Your brain also gets rid of 60 per cent more toxins when

HEALTH & BEAUTY cause the conditions. A diet poor in calcium, being sedentary and pollution can also aggravate bone density. Can osteoporosis be prevented? The deterioration of bone tissue is an inevitable process as we age. But there are some lifestyle choices that can slightly modify the evolution. Maintaining healthy habits does not guarantee avoiding osteoporosis, but it can slow up the disease from progressing. A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is essential. Combining foods like fatty fish, dairy, nuts, legumes, green leafy vegetables and eggs with sun exposure should be sufficient. Physical exercise also helps to maintain bone health. It decreases the risk of fractures and if practised outdoors, it helps to absorb the necessary vitamin D. Toxic habits such as alcohol consumption or tobacco are discouraged, as they reduce the absorption of calcium and other important minerals including phosphorous and magnesium. After menopause women, or people with an increased risk of osteoporosis, should be reviewed. A test to measure bone mass allows doctors to make an exact diagnosis.

Deep sleep you get the proper amount of sleep. Not enough sleep can make your skin imbalanced, which leads to redness and dehydration as it decreases the moisture in your skin and

lowers your skin’s pH levels, which is why your skin looks less youthful and has less glow. Burning the candle at both ends is the main reason why your blood vessels dilate, which can often lead to dark circles.

You can work out the exact amount that your body needs to function on all cylinders by going to bed 15 minutes earlier every night and continue adding 15 minutes until you wake up and stay feeling that way all day long.

SKIN HYDRATION: Six to eight hours of sleep every night.

Quirónsalud Torrevieja, the Best private Hospital in the Province of Alicante and the Community of Valencia, according to the Index of Hospital Excellence QUIRÓNSALUD VALENCIA is among the Top 5 best hospitals in the Community of Valencia Torrevieja/Valencia, December 30, 2019. Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja has been named the best private hospital in the province of Alicante and the Community of Valencia, rising from fourth to third place in the fifth edition of the 2019 Índice de Excelencia Hospitalaria (IEH, or Index of Hospital Excellence), which is published every year by the Instituto Coordenadas de Gobernanza y Economía Aplicada [Governance and Applied Economics Coordinates Institute]; it considers Hospital Universitario Fundación Jiménez Díaz, part of Grupo Quirónsalud, the best Hospital in Spain. The rest of the ranking of healthcare centres in Valencia saw some variations compared to the previous edition, in particular, Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja rose from the fourth to the third spot. The Community of Valencia Top 5 is completed by Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia, which joined the best five in the ranking this year.

The 2019 IEH named, once again and for the fifth year in a row, the Fundación Jiménez Díaz as the best hospital in Spain. Its leadership for the past five years consolidates the recognition it is granted by the representative sample of professionals consulted. The goal of this initiative is to reward excellence, innovation and social wellbeing in hospitals and reinforce healthcare as one of the basic pillars of the Well-being State. The Index analyses public and private hospitals, and measures their excellence based on the results and perceptions of 2,000 professionals working at the centres or in their area. The results transcend the total number of services offered at the centres, to focus on quality and rating of the same. Hospital excellence entails the sum of quality of care, hospital service, well-being and patient satisfaction, innovative capacity, personalised attention, and resource efficiency; it bets on the sustainability of a free and high-quality public healthcare system.

This award consolidates Quirónsalud not only as the largest, but also as the private healthcare group with the best quality in Spain, having obtained the label of ‘excellent.’ The good rating of Quirónsalud hospitals brings with it a new incentive to improve the care and treatment our professionals provide their patients within a concept of person to person healthcare. About Quirónsalud Quirónsalud is the leading hospital group in Spain and, together with its Fresenius-Helios headquarters, also in Europe. It has over 40,000 professionals at over 125 healthcare centres, including 47 hospitals offering close to 7,000 hospital beds. It offers the most advanced technology and a large team of highly specialised professionals of international prestige. Its centres include Centro Médico Teknon, Ruber Internacional, Hospital Universitario Quirónsalud Madrid, Fundación Jiménez Díaz, Hospi-

tal Quirónsalud Barcelona, Hospital Universitario Dexeus, Policlínica de Gipuzkoa, etc. The Group works on the promotion of teaching (eight of its hospitals are attached to universities) and medical-scientific research (it has the Healthcare Research Institution of the FJD [Jiménez Díaz Foundation], which is certified by the Secretaría de Estado de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación [Ministry for Research, Development and Innovation]). Likewise, its healthcare service is organised into transversal networks and units, which allows for the optimisation of the accumulated experience of the different centres, and the clinical translation of its research. Currently, Quirónsalud is developing over 1,600 research projects throughout Spain, and many of its centres perform cutting-edge work in this field, and are pioneers in different specialties, such as oncology, cardiology, endocrinology, gynaecology and neurology, among others.

Real fast Food MANY people get a certain image in their head when they hear the term ‘Fast Food.’ A burger, Chinese take away, chips, kebabs. They are deemed ‘Fast’ because the only time and effort you’ve had to make was ordering it or waiting for it to be delivered. This week I fancied something fast. I set myself the challenge of cooking two tapas dishes in five minutes. Add in the two minutes of preparation and I had two delicious dishes on the table for lunch in a total of about seven minutes. Gambas (Prawns) Al Ajillo and Padron Peppers made a very tasty lunch. Have ready two garlic cloves chopped, a red chilli deseeded and chopped and some parsley finely chopped. Put the pep-

pers in a small bowl and cover with water. That’s it, the prep is done. Get two pans on a high heat, when hot add olive oil to both pans. Take the peppers out of the water and shake excess water off, put carefully in the pan, they will spit a bit, but it’s the dampness of the peppers that will make them blister. Put the garlic and chilli in the other pan, leave a minute then add the whole prawns. A minute or two on each side, sprinkle in the parsley and remove to your serving dish. Cover with the juices from the pan. The peppers are ready when they have started to collapse in the middle. Sprinkle both dishes with sea salt. Enjoy!

BARRY DUKE LAST week, at considerable expense and after four days of extreme duress, I acquired a ‘Happiness Engineer.’ He wasn’t an anger management guru, but instead a helpline assistant working for the Wordpress company in America. Wordpress, for the record, is extensively used by bloggers such as myself, and for reasons best known to the bosses, they chose to saddle their assistants with the cheesy title of ‘Happiness Engineers.’ Only in America, huh? I was forced to communicate with Wordpress after a site I administer for a UK-based LGBT charity, the Pink Triangle Trust (PTT), went down - just as I was about to post an important item of news concerning a friend, Cliff James, who had just featured in a BBC documentary about paedophile priests in the Church of England. The site looked kosher, but before paying I checked its credentials, and all seemed tickety-boo. So I used my Barclays debit card to complete the transaction. After my card was declined, I had no option but to call Wordpress. I gritted my teeth when the bloke at the other end of the line said ‘Hi, I’m Ghupta, your Happiness Engineer.’ After Ghupta proved as much use as a marshmallow dagger, DragonStack, a local website development company that designed my site, got onto Wordpress which said the matter would be sorted - after it received payment of $97.36! When I was emailed the bill, I again used my Barclays card. This payment was also rejected so I used my husband’s card instead. After that, I decided to take a breather and wait until the site was restored. Then I got a telephone call from Barclays’ fraud team, in-

forming me that, following my attempt to pay the $5, multiple efforts had been made to extract various amounts from my account. These ranged from £250,000 to £5 million. As I listened aghast to what Barclays was telling me, the conversation was suddenly terminated, and I had to call back for further information. For 35 minutes I was kept on hold, listening to annoying muzak. Then Barclays’ equivalent of a ‘Happiness Engineer’ asked me to log onto my online banking account, without saying why. When I tried to do so I found I was locked out. ‘Ah, that would be because your debit card has been blocked,’ said the assistant in an inappropriately cheery tone. When I said I needed to draw cash that day, she said ‘no worries, just pop into any branch with your card and a passport.’ I barked that this wasn’t an option as I live in Spain. Her reply? ‘Oh, that’s nice. What’s the weather like there?’ I screamed ‘it’s p***ing down stair rods! We have thunder and lightning and gale force winds!’ When she said ‘well, it’s lovely over here,’ my phone went flying across the room.

Pascal and Eddie like company

SOME pets always need company, especially when you’re away on holiday. Many of us find that our pets are social creatures often enjoying the company of their fellow house mates. Some need that companionship and stimulation, and that counts more so when you’re on holiday. Pascal and Eddie are both relatively young pets living in Andalucia. Their owners go away a

couple of times a year. Recently their owners discovered HouseSit Match.com. Now they find sitters through the site to come and live in their home when they are away, and care for their pets, keeping them company. What does it cost? All this the house-sitters do for free, in exchange for caring for the pets and property in the owner’s absence. It’s a fair exchange, a win win fa-

cilitated securely through our professionally managed website. How does it work? You join as a member, for this there is a small annual fee, you get ID checked for safety and then build your advert saying when you are going on holiday. House-sitters are mailed your advert, they respond and then you choose whom you would like to care for your pets. What makes HouseSit

Match unique? The careful checking of all our members makes us unique. Unlike other house-sitting and pet-sitting networks, at Housesitmatch.com we ID check all our members. We also offer house-sitters a police and background check on registration. We do this because it makes our network safer and helps us maintain a high bar for house-sitters caring for your precious

pets and homes. Please check our Trustpilot reviews online to see what our clients say about our service. Trustpilot Testimonials 4.8 / 5 Excellent rating (New Trustpilot rating scale) Here’s what members have said about usHouseSitMatch found us a per fect house-sitter… HouseSitMatch found us a perfect house-sitter while we were away in Canada and we were delighted with the care and attention that Hous-

Do you need a house-sitter? Get in touch. House-sitting can be a win-win for both parties, free house and petsitting, and the experienced and checked sitters get free accommodation! Bold and elegant evolution

STRONG DESIGN: Improved overall dimensions.

THE all-new SEAT Leon is almost here. The brand’s latest vehicle arrives with a strong design evolution that keeps the soul that any Leon generation stands for. Its design philosophy connects perfectly with the values of the SEAT brand. The next-generation SEAT Leon stands out thanks to its improved overall dimensions, its more determined face, smoother lines and more sculpted rear end. The basis for the vehicle’s strong design language is its advanced MQB Evo platform, which provided the

flexibility and adaptability the design team required, while the all-new Leon’s increased dimensions for both the five-door and Sportstourer brought an improved sense of proportions to the next generation vehicle’s design. “The all-new SEAT Leon has been designed by our team with the courage of simplicity and executed with strength and determination. Simplicity because at SEAT, we believe that most things can be said with just a few lines. Determination and strength because those are some of the attributes that make our cars recognisable and seducing at first glance,” said Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, Director of Design at SEAT. The sur faces of the model have evolved, with stronger shapes, giving a more elegant design treatment, with more changes and nuances in the colour and tone of the vehicle as the light hits the paintwork

and shifts across the body. It means a vehicle with a greater three-dimensional approach and a layered, shifting aesthetic. The rear character of all-new SEAT Leon is emphasised by the coast-to-coast LED lights. Both the lighting system and spoiler create lines that generate the notion of speed, even when not moving at all. The design has been forged by the relationship between evolution and revolution, adding a new boldness, stronger character when on the road and refined when viewed from near or far. The eagerly anticipated allnew Leon is already creating a buzz; it’ll be the brand’s safest, most connected vehicle and will benefit from electrified powertrains and an enticing, evolving design, but for now, you’ll have to keep your gaze on the rear design until the fourth-generation vehicle is unveiled in its entirety.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher WHEN Audi launched its TT model back in 1998, it quickly established itself as an iconic sports coupe and more than 2 0 y e a r s l a t e r, t h e TT is still one of the most instantly recognisable and charismatic sport cars. With outstanding buildquality and Audi’s cool image, the TT is relatively accessible to a mass market with prices starting from €37,745 (£32,165) for the entry level Sport version, which is

Audi TT Sport quite well equipped and offers zestful performance. There are several other power outputs available - including the highperformance flagship RS versions - and also front or all-wheel drive options. With the popular 2.0litre 194 hp petrol engine and standard sevenspeed automatic trans-

mission - a manual gearbox is available on some models - it has a quick 0100 kph time of 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 249 kph (155 mph). Despite those performance credentials, it returns average fuel economy of 14.3 kpl (40.4 mpg) and emissions of 138 g/km. Underway, this TT immediately impresses with its smooth acceleration and slick re-

sponsive auto gearshifts. The suspension is understandably quite firm which helps deliver rail-like grip on the corners and minimal body lean. The steering is very precise and adds to the feeling of assured driver control. The styling of the car is distinctive with its low wide road stance, large gaping front grille and narrow headlights. The cabin has a robust quality appearance with a simple and straightforward dashboard. Unusually, there is no central screen. Instead you get Audi’s ‘Virtual Cockpit’ which has COOL IMAGE: Relatively accessible to a mass market.

a digital display located behind the steering wheel for easier and safer viewing and operates via a rotary control. With eye-catching dashboard air vents, flatbottomed steering wheel and sports seats, the TT cabin has a striking upmarket look and even the entry version has a good level of standard features including heated front seats, premium

sound system, sat-nav, auto lights and wipers, keyless start and reversing sensors. Front occupants get plenty of space but the rear seats are in effect just for children. Luggage capacity is very good by sports car standards with a boot-space of 305 litres easily accessible by a large tailgate. Rear seats do fold flat to boost load space to 712 litres. While it has several rivals in its sector, the TT still has the overall style and cachet to maintain its status as an aspirational sports coupe which is still at the head of the pack.

Space age A JAPANESE startup called SkyDrive Inc. has begun conducting test flights of their prototype flying car with a human pilot at a protected indoor facility at their research flight centre outside of Nagoya. SkyDrive was founded by former engineers from Toyota and they intend their vehicle to be ‘the world’s smallest flying car.’ The company is remaining tight-lipped

about how the test flights have been going so far but say things are going well enough to continue production. The company hopes the flying vehicles could ease traffic congestion, especially in busy megalopolises like Tokyo and also believe they could be helpful in search and rescue missions or during emergencies where conventional infrastructure becomes unusable.

Billic knocks out his old Club West Ham IT was an afternoon to cherish for Slaven Bilic as his West Brom side claimed the first Premier League scalp of the FA Cup fourth round weekend, beating former employers West Ham 10 at the London Stadium. The Baggies had several early chances before they took an early ninth minute lead. Issa Diop failed to clear his lines and the ball fell to left-back Conor Townsend, whose rasping 20-yard strike from the edge of the box sailed past Darren Randolph into the far right corner. Charlie Austin should have made it two for the

energetic visitors before the interval, but he glanced a header wide from six yards despite being left unmarked. West Ham were sloppy, lacked creativity and failed to muster a shot on goal in the first half - Declan Rice’s long-range efforts all they could come up with. The Hammers made a triple change at half-time and fared slightly better after the break, thanks to the sense of urgency brought by Michail Antonio. The visitors offered further hope that West Ham could get back into the game, after Semi Ajayi was given his marching orders for two yellows with

just under 20 minutes remaining. But Manuel Lanzini and Mark Noble failed to capitalise on opportunities late on - the Hammers captain guilty of blazing over from 12 yards out - and West Brom saw the game out to hand Bilic a well earned win against the side that sacked him in late 2017. West Ham failed to provide a real threat towards the West Brom goal, lacking any kind of cohesion in their forward play. Sebastien Haller, again, was isolated up top, though Michail Antonio’s introduction at half-time did inject some much needed dynamism. But ultimately, things

weren’t good enough from the home side. Considering West Brom made a number of changes, Moyes’ side should have been on the front foot but they were tentative, lacking in ideas and looked like a team fighting a relegation battle. To sum up the performance, West Ham failed to register a shot on target in the first 70 minutes. West Brom looked far

more effective in possession throughout the game. They moved up and down the pitch with a real sense of purpose, and created a host of chances to test Darren Randolph in goal. Even after Antonio’s introduction, the Baggies were largely comfortable in dealing with the limited attacking threat posed by West Ham. West Ham fans really

have had enough now, they want the board out as well as the new current manager already. Out of all cups and heading to relegation whilst hard core fans continue to organise demonstrations - moved from their spiritual home on the promise of top flight football - now playing in a soulless bowl and scrapping to stay in the premiership.

Scare For Liverpool In Cup JASON CUMMINGS scored a second-half double off the bench as Shrewsbury Town came from behind to earn a surprise 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday. Within 15 minutes of replacing Callum Lang on the hour mark, Cummings converted from the penalty spot and guided a cool finish past Adrian to earn League One side Shrewsbury a replay against the Premier League leaders at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp made 11 changes to his team and saw them move 2-0 up when Donald Love followed up Curtis Jones’ opener with a comical own goal. Klopp responded to Cummings’ brace by calling for Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino from the bench, but Liverpool were unable to salvage a victory despite some huge late chances and now have another fixture to add to their busy schedule.

JASON CUMMINGS: Scored a second-half double. Liverpool took 15 minutes to move in front, with Pedro Chirivella threading a pass to Jones that the midfielder slid beyond Max O’Leary. Adrian made a great save with his leg to deny Shaun Whalley, who scuffed another opportunity wide after being played through by Lang.

Shrewsbury were two down just 27 seconds after the restart, Love inexplicably stabbing Neco Williams’ delivery past a bemused O’Leary despite being under no pressure. The hosts reacted positively, and although Adrian made a great save to keep out Lang, he could not stop Cummings con-

verting from the spot in the 65th minute after Yasser Larouci sent Josh Laurent to ground. Cummings doubled his tally 10 minutes later, beating Dejan Lovren - making his first appearance since December - on the edge of the box and picking out the bottom-left corner. The Shrews had an appeal for

a penalty turned down when Love’s cross struck Fabinho’s arm, before Ro-Shaun Williams made a crucial block to stop Jones slotting home on the follow-up after O’Leary denied Firmino at the other end. Salah headed a cross from Firmino wide in second-half stoppage time as the hosts held on for a result that was followed by a pitch invasion from the jubilant Shrewsbury fans. Jordan Henderson had to play at centre-back during the Club World Cup due to the enforced absences of Joel Matip who returned from three months out with a knee injury at the New Meadow - and Lovren. Their returns will no doubt be welcomed by Klopp, but the duo failed to impress against Shrewsbury. A replay against the League One side may be welcomed by the defenders, though, as it provides another opportunity for minutes ahead of an important stretch of the season.

Arsenal Still Have FA Cup Insight ARSENAL’S youngsters led the side to an impressive 2-1 victory over Bournemouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup, setting up a tie with Portsmouth on the week commencing March 2. Eighteen-year-old Bukayo Saka lashed the Gunners into an early lead as he found space on the left-hand side of the box, before sending a thunderous strike through the fingertips of Mark Travers and into the roof of the Cherries net. A quick turn of pace saw Joe Willock go through one-on-one with the Bournemouth shotstopper, but the angle proved too tight for the youngster, who poked his effort into Travers’ midriff. The home side’s reprieve didn’t last long,

ARSENAL: After their victory, they are now set to meet Portsmouth in the next round. however. Willock’s measured ball picked out the onrushing Saka, giving the left-back the perfect platform to

pick out a teammate. He duly obliged, sliding in a low cross to Eddie Nketiah, leaving the unmarked striker with the simplest

of tasks as he swept home to put Arsenal two ahead. Bournemouth gained a foothold after the break, with Eddie Howe’s men

showing more composure and showing greater care in possession. Their best opportunity came when Emiliano Martinez charged into no man’s land in a vein attempt to clear a loose ball, the Argentine and Shkodran Mustafi combing to cause havoc in the Arsenal defence. Fortunately for the pair, Bournemouth couldn’t capitalise on the chaos, Ryan Fraser misdirecting a header at the back post, with that the Cherries last chance of note until the 94th minute, Sam Surridge ghosting into the box and sliding past Martinez as the hosts grabbed a consolation. There are two ways of looking at this for Howe. On the one hand, Bournemouth’s performance was disappoint-

ing, to say the least. Their first-half display was unacceptable, with the south coast outfit struggling to keep pace with Arsenal’s intelligent off-the-ball movement. Howe’s worries were compounded by the strength of the lineup he fielded. This was an experienced group of players, yet they looked like rabbits in headlights against Mikel Arteta’s youthful Gunners team. There’s clearly some cause for concern. Nevertheless, this was an FA Cup fixture, and it’s plainly obvious which competition Bournemouth are prioritising. Several stars will be restored to the side once Premier League action resumes. That’ll give Howe a better chance to assess where his team are at mentally.
