THE Guardia Civil are appealing for information after a 14-year-old girl was seriously injured in a hitand-run. The minor was struck by a vehicle as she was attempting to cross Calle Jaume Tortella de Andratx at approximately 9pm on January 18. The teenager, who is a resident of Calvia, had been on her way to her friend’s house after celebrating the Sant Sebastià festivities in the capital. As reported by the police, the girl had been standing between two parked vehicles as she waited to cross the road

MALLORCA was put on high alert for extreme weather earlier this week as the Atlantic storm Gloria swept across the island, bringing heavy rain, powerful winds, unexpected snowfall, freezing cold temperatures and dangerously high sea levels. The State Meteorology Agency (Aemet) had issued a red warning for Mallorca on January 19, forecasting extreme weather conditions for three days with the storm resulting in historical levels being reached.

Witnessing the horrifying incident, residents rushed to help and immediately alerted the emergency services hotline, where in a matter of minutes, officers from the Local Police were on the scene. An ambulance arrived shortly after with paramedics treating the victim before she was taken to a Son Espases hospital.

Medical personnel later reported the girl sustained head injuries but is expected to fully recover. The case has now been handed over to the Guardia Civil in a bid to bring the responsible driver to justice. Residents have also voiced their fury on the incident, stating the outcome could have been fatal. This was a stark reminder to ensure the safety of residents to avoid the same tragedy that devastated the island in October 2018, when 13 people lost their lives and countless homes destroyed.
