BRIT EXPAT WITNESSES NEWS the authorities have uncovered a marihuana plantation is not uncommon on the Costa Almeria.

Nevertheless, British expat Tony F was shocked to discover there was a large-scale cultivation of the drug literally just over the road from his home in Huerta Nueva in Los Gallardos.

The first thing Tony knew of the alleged dodgy goings on in the distinctive pink house was when eight law enforcement vehicles pitched up in the early hours of Friday morning.

Helmet-wearing Guardia Civil clad in black jumped out and ‘rammed their way in’ to the property, Tony told the Euro Weekly News.

Tony, who has lived in Huerta Nueva since 2015, believes the house was bought by a Russian a few years back, having been empty for some time.

It was then subsequently rented out.

Tony was aware of works going on in the house at some stage, but said he virtually never saw anyone going in or out.

Just once a month or so two men would arrive and leave shortly after.

What did strike Tony as odd was that there were air-conditioning units running the whole time. In fact according to Tony the next-door neighbour was on the point of reporting the constant noise from the machines to the local council.

Other neighbours affirmed that stand downwind of the house and you would catch a strong waft of marihuana, but Tony said he wouldn’t have recognised the smell anyway.

Having a marihuana plantation right on his doorstep was certainly an unexpected surprise for Tony.

As he commented, “You just don’t know who your neighbours are.”

GUARDIA CIVIL nicked a 35-year-old man for breaking into three vehicles in Roquetas de Mar. The arrest of Roquetas local NISC was the result of an investigation launched at the end of November following a robbery from a car parked on a public street.

BRUTAL: Fearing for the victim’s life, officers forced their way into the property.

Saved from beating LAW enforcement officers saved a 43year-old woman suffering a savage beating at the hands of her ex-partner at h e r h o m e i n Ve r a Playa.

A c a ll to the 062 e me rgency line reporting a possible case of gender-based violence in Pueblo Laguna first alerted the Guardia Civil to the incident.

When the nearest Guardia patrol arrived at the property the y found Ve ra Loc a l Police officers already there, repeatedly banging on the front door and shouting to be let in while cries and what sounded like a violent

At that moment a woman with her face covered in blood and desperately calling for help appeared on the balcony.

Fearing for the victim’s life, the officers forced open t he door. The aggr essor t r i ed t o at t ack t hem , but they managed to subdue and arrest him.

The officers found the woman semi-naked and her cl ot hi ng r i pped. She had bl ood on her m out h and head and scr at ches and bruises on her back.

She had also lost part of a tooth.

While waiting for the emergency health services to arrive the officers also had t o assi st her at t acker who had started to convulse and breathe in a very agitated way.

Local Police took the victim to the Vera health centre for treatment, while her former partner was taken by ambulance to the hospital with a Guardia Civil escort.

The Guardia Civil identified the woman’s attacker as 44-year old JC and said there had been a restraining order in place.

He was handed over into court custody.

Green space ALMERIA has this year gained more than 72,000sqm of green spaces and nearly 800 trees lining some 30 streets, the city council’s Environmental Sustainability department reported.

The council said it planned to continue increasing the amount of garden areas and tree planting throughout 2020.

Warm Xmas CHRISTMAS on the Costa Almeria felt more like spring than winter thanks to the higher than average temperatures and clear blue skies. The mercury rose to 26ºC on Christmas Eve and to 24ºC on Christmas Day, dipping by just a degree for Boxing Day.

Plant closure ENDESA has officially requested closing the coal-fired thermal power plant in Carboneras due to a marked change in market conditions, although it reserves the right to reverse this entirely or partially if additional tests with different mixes of fuel change the results and guarantee its viability.

Good year THE Almeria mayor said the city’s year as Spanish gastronomy capital had left “a good taste in the mouth,” promising “the city will continue moving forward” in 2020. Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco described the provincial capital as an increasingly “open, cultural, commercial, participatory and dynamic city.”

ALMERIA Province has gained 7,480 inhabitants since the beginning of 2019, according to figures for residents registered with local authorities and published in the BOE Official State Bulletin.

The official number of residents in the province was put at 716,820, of which 198,533 live in Almeria City.

A MAN was rescued from the sea at Garrucha port after he slipped and tumbled in, the 112 Andalucia emergency service reported. A team managed to fish him out with a rope and transfer him to a health centre for treatment for a bump to his head.

THREE KINGS DAY in Spain, or Dia de los Reyes, falls on January 6 each year - a day when most children in Spanish-speaking countries receive their Christmas presents.

On the eve of January 5, youngsters leave their shoes by the door anticipating the Three Kings will leave gifts inside them overnight.

Prior to this, children and their families excitedly await the kings’ arrival in their home villages or towns, on occasions via helicopter, where gifts are normally presented, before colourful processions during which thousands of sweets are thrown to children running alongside.

Another essential part of the Three Kings Day in Spain in the roscon de reyes, or kings’ cake. The ring-shaped pastry is decorated to look like a crown a king would wear, and often topped with glazed fruits to represent jewels. Inside the cake is a toy - a figurine of baby Jesus or a tiny king - and the person who finds it in their piece is said to have good luck for the year.

Aiming for British Consul addresses Brexit concerns energy efficiency ED: 1751 - JANUARY

VERA Council has announced plans for mod- ED: 1749 - JANUARY ernising public street lighting along the coast to improve energy efficiency in the municipality.

Over 1,100 existing lights will be replaced with LED technology, 240 new columns or supports will be put up, and a system for monitoring electrical parameters on each lighting control panel will be installed.

The aim is to reduce electricity consumption by around 50 per cent, saving as much as €50,000 a year, and at the same time contributing to reducing carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. Vera Council also says the modernised lighting will produce less light contamination.

“We want to do our bit in the sustainable development of the Levante area of Almeria, making Vera a reference point in the region,” commented Vera mayor Felix Lopez.

The measures will be co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Andalucia 2017-2020 programme for sustainable energy development, which is managed by the Andalucia Energy Agency.

The works are expected to take three months, with the total cost of the project at just over €700,000.

BRITISH CONSUL for Andalucia and the Canary Islands Charmaine Arbouin, addressed British e x p a t r i a t e ’s B r e x i t c o n cerns at a meeting in Mojacar last week.

Accompanied by Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano, Immigration Council Delegate Lucas Mayo, and Brexpats in Spain representative Richard Hill, the Consul stressed that the priority for British expatriates, whatever the final outcome of the ongoing Brexit negotiations, is to legalise their situation in this country.

Friends centre now open ED: 1753 - FEBRUARY THE Almanzora Group of Friends has officially opened the doors of its library and information centre in Albox.

Local mayor Francisco Torrecillas cut the ribbon to the new premises in Plaza San Antonio at Saturday morning’s inauguration, also unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.

Before Cava and snacks to celebrate the event, the mayor took the opportunity to outline his plans for the Barrio Alto neighbourhood of the town in which the centre is located.

Barrio Alto is the oldest part of Albox, and Torrecillas said he hoped the opening of the centre would be the first of many initiatives to rejuvenate the area.

Almanzora Group of Friends President Shelagh Copeland thanked the local authority for its support, saying, “We are grateful to the mayor and the council for allowing us to move into this beautiful build-

ing so we can survive and prosper.

“We also thank the residents of the ‘barrio’ for making us feel welcome. We hope you will all benefit from, and take part in, the services and events we are planning, and we can work together for the benefit of all the residents of Albox.”

Shelagh Copeland told the Euro Weekly News, “The group had been struggling financially, and could not have survived for much longer if the mayor had not stepped in and offered these premises. We hope that now we are based in the heart of Albox it will be easier to be-

come more integrated into the community and work with the mayor for the good of all.”

Shelagh also highlighted the role of the association’s Spanish Liaison Officer Francine Sanchez in making the new centre a reality, commenting, “She was instrumental in introducing the mayor to us and helped us right through the process. We couldn’t have done it without her.”

ED: 1759 - MARCH A SOCIAL media campaign group is pressing for increased flights between UK airports and Almeria.

The Campaign for Almeria Airport Frequent Flights particularly wants more flights to the provincial airport from UK destinations currently not served or which lost flights after the collapse of Monarch.

The Facebook action group was the brainchild of Daniel Northover.

“I launched the campaign as a result of the ongoing inconvenience in getting to Almeria outside the summer months,” Daniel told the Euro Weekly News.

Daniel relocated to Liverpool three years ago with his partner Orlando. He has been a regular visitor to Almeria to see family who live in the province, flying out of Manchester.

“When I moved here, there were regular flights to Almeria throughout the

More flights please! year,” Daniel said. “However, with the collapse of Monarch, we lost a good chunk of services and had none over the winter. “ We h o p e d t h a t a n e w airline would take the routes as they always seemed well subscribed, but nothing seems to have happened and no information provided about their status,” Daniel continued.

This has left Daniel and Orlando having to make alternative arrangements to get here, usually a flight to Alicante, often an overnight hotel stay, shuttle buses, lifts from friends or taxis, “which eat into our time and increase the cost of the travel.”

Daniel realised he wasn’t the only one frustrated by the lack of UK-Almeria services.

“A number of people I met wanted more flights and from additional destinations, so creating a cam-

about what is happening and if anyone is just sitting on the routes.”

He also believes that now is a good time to have launched the initiative, es-

pecially after reading an article in the EWN that the province was looking to promote itself as a winter holiday destination to a number of countries in northern Europe, including the UK. “Obviously there’s some political will to increase flights, and now would be a good time to capitalise on that interest.”

The action campaign highlights the shortage of UK-Almeria connections outside peak holiday times and to airports outside the south-east of England, but Daniel points out there is demand for more flights across the board, commenting, “I think many of us would like to see improved services to all regions within the UK, and I think we, as a group, only reflect the tip of the iceberg.”

It is still early days for the group, but it is attracting a steady influx of interested travellers and there are plans to contact politicians, public authorities, airport authorities and airlines.

Roaring success

LIONAID: This year’s Party in the Park smashed last year’s fundraising total.

ED: 1762 - APRIL THE Lionaid second charity ‘Party in the Park’ was a roaring success, smashing last year’s target. More than €10,000 was taken on the day, and donations are still coming in.

The Vera & District Lions Club Sunday event fully lived up to the expectation of a great family day out. Vera’s El Palmeral Park was bustling from the minute the gates opened at 12 midday right through to the last act as the sun went down.

Local bands, dance groups and Irish folk groups gener-

ously donated their time and provided the live entertainment. One group even travelled all the way from Ireland to take part.

The Lion Bar did a brisk trade in food and drinks throughout the day. There were stalls galore, and for children there were bouncy castles, a fairground and entertainers.

Many local businesses generously donated great prizes for the tombola.

One of the most poignant parts of the day was the raffle held in memory of Leo the Lion, the courageous little boy who died just before his fifth birthday in December 2017 after battling a rare form of

brain cancer for much of his short life. A Garrucha interiors business donated €500 worth of items for the Leo Memorial Board prize. The lucky ticketholder, Frank O’Sullivan of the Patrick Pierse Irish band, promptly donated his winnings straight back to the Lions.

Just as moving was the moment the wife of Paul Morrison, an MS sufferer from Antas, got up on stage to tell everyone how the Lions had helped her family, not only financially by funding his flights to Russia for stem cell treatment, but also by providing moral support.

“An amazing day” was how event organiser Kay Frances described this year’s fundraiser.

Kay issued a huge thanks on behalf of the Lions to all the volunteers who stayed from morning till night, and rolled up their sleeves and pitched in with the post-event clean up.

Also to all the performers, and to the local council for their continuous collaboration with Vera Lions.

Kay said the money raised from Party in the Park “will go to help local people in times of hardship.”

Food banks, the supply of rehabilitation equipment, defibrillators in public places, vouchers for people who are unable to afford petrol to get them to and fro from hospital treatments: just a handful of the community causes earmarked for Lions donations.

Expat support website launches A BRITISH Consulate and University of Birmingham website seeking to help tackle the challenges of an ageing expatriate population has expanded coverage into Almeria.

Support in Spain (www.sup portinspain.info), provides useful assistance for older and vulnerable British residents. It features information on how to get extra help on a wide range of matters, including health care, disabled services and benefits, as well as a directory of local support organisations.

The initiative was launched last week at well-attended networking events in Turre and Arboleas, led

by Neil Hesketh of the Support in Spain project and Javier Gonzalez, Consular Officer for the British Consulate Andalucia. The British

Honorary Consul in Almeria, Alejandro Guerrero, also attended the Arboleas event.

Over 60 representatives from charities and voluntary groups in the Costa Almeria and Almanzora areas which provide unstinting support for British and other foreign nationals took part in the meetings, among them the Royal British Legion, MACS Cancer Support, the Spanish Red Cross, and the Lions Club.

The representatives expressed great interest in the website. The meetings also provided an opportunity to meet with a Consulate representative and to get together with colleagues from other organisations.

“It is exciting to see this website expanding into Almeria after a

successful start on the Costa del Sol,” British Consul Charmaine Arbouin said ahead of the launch.

“There is some incredible work carried out by so many volunteers across southern Spain to support foreign residents who are in need.

As the Consulate cannot be in all areas at once, I hope that this website is a useful support tool for voluntary groups in their work and for residents as well.

“We have also compiled the site in Spanish, as well as English, so that social workers, medical staff and Spanish-speaking friends can, for the first time, access information on English-speaking support available.”

Charmaine continued: “Our message from the British Consulate in Andalucia to UK resi-

dents is clear: plan ahead for the future. Anyone can become vulnerable at any time and it is better to be prepared.”

PROVIDING a source of essential information on locally available assistance and advice for older and more vulnerable UK citizens living in Spain, ‘all in one place’ is the key objective of the Support in Spain website.

Neil Hesketh of the Support in Spain project told the Euro Weekly News how important it had been to also make the website as clear and simple to navigate as possible so that expatriates in Spain, their family members elsewhere in the world and Spanish professionals can easily search for information on the help available in residents’ own particular areas, ‘so they are

The Support in Spain initiative is the result of a close co-operation between the British consulates in southern Spain and the University of Birmingham School of Social Policy. The original project set out to research the issues which older and more vulnerable British people face while living in Spain, and

to suggest possible solutions to help prevent them becoming socially isolated in the future.

One of the study’s conclusions was the need to develop a website which included all the contact information of the different voluntary groups and Spanish statutory authorities available locally, as well as helpful advice on common questions, such as how to secure extra social care, help for a disability or assistance with paperwork in Spanish.

Support in Spain was first launched on the Costa del Sol in January last year. Andalucia Consular Officer Javier Gonzalez reported on how helpful consulate staff had found it, to be able to go to one source to access all this information, allowing them to easily direct British nationals in need of assistance in the right direction.

He pointed out the Spanish health and welfare system is still based on the assumption that family will take on much of the responsibility for looking after relatives, which can create difficult situations for British expatriates in Spain on their own.

“We have to count on other organisations otherwise we wouldn’t be able to assist: we just don’t have the resources,” he commented.

The website content currently covers Malaga Province, the Costa del Sol and Almeria. Later this year the Canary Islands will be added as well as other parts of Andalucia. It has had over 25,000 visitors since it was launched.

The project was funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Muggers prey on expats ED: 1769 - JUNE A MOJACAR businessman claims organised gangs of muggers are preying on expat men after he was targeted four times.

Charles Alman told the Euro Weekly News the first incident was outside his Sundance Spas business in Mojacar Playa last October. A young woman approached him on the pretext of asking if he knew someone. To Charles’ astonishment she wrapped herself around him, making suggestions of a sexual nature.

He pushed her away, and she took off in a waiting car. Minutes later Charles realised his €2,000 gold chain was missing.

“I didn’t tell anyone because I was so embarrassed about falling for it,” he admitted.

“They put their hands on you and you don’t realise what they’re doing because they catch you so off guard.”

Two months ago the muggers set their sights on Charles in another Mojacar street.

“Different girl, but same thing,” he said.

“I told her I was going to call the Guardia Civil and she ran off with another girl.”

VICTIM: Charles Alman says he has been targeted by muggers four times.

Incredibly, muggers went for Charles again later that day in Puerto Rey. A woman tried to get him to open his car window, he thinks as a ploy to get his watch. Last week the muggers had another go with the same tactic outside his shop.

“I thought this is ridiculous,” a clearly angry Charles told EWN. “I got out the car. I told her I knew what she was doing and was taking her photo and calling the Guardia. She ran into a car in which there were two guys and another girl. One of the guys got out. Luckily one

of my employees, a big burly fellow, came out and off they went.”

Gibraltarian Charles has lived in Mojacar for 31 years. He believes criminal gangs using young females to pick on men of a certain age is ‘rife.’

This time Charles reported the incidents at Garrucha Guardia station. While there a British man in his late 70’s came in to report a young woman had just snatched his gold Rolex watch. Charles acted as translator for the pensioner, who he said was ‘very shaken up.’

The man told officers he had been sitting in his car at Garrucha port with the door open. A woman suddenly got in and in fluent English made out she knew him.

When he realised she had his watch he struggled with her, but she bit his hand.

“All his fingers were swollen and there were real bite marks,” Charles told EWN. Just like when Charles was targeted, a car pulled up, the assailant got in, and it took off.

Guardia Civil confirmed to EWN they were investigating the theft of the British pensioner’s Rolex. They said the gang had probably identified him as an ‘easy victim.”‘ Nevertheless, they made it clear they do not regard this kind of crime as a particular local problem.

www.euroweeklynews.com ‘AN adrenalin high’ was how Ian Hunter described his feelings when he made it to Mojacar last Thursday following a 1,500mile cycle to honour the memory of his late mum Joyce and to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Not only did 65-year-old Ian successfully complete the formidable challenge of pedalling from Morecambe to Almeria in just three weeks, he smashed his target of raising £5,000 for the cancer charity: the final total is set to be over £6,000.

Kicking back after his incredible endeavour, Ian told the Euro Weekly News, “This is what I’d been talking through in my mind when I was training and cycling here, and here was the reality.”

One thing Ian hadn’t prepared for was the surprise his wife Pam had in store for him. He was, he said, “stunned and overwhelmed” to find her waiting for him when he reached the final stop and not back in Lancashire as she’d had him believe.

Incredibly Ian only took up cycling in 2017 after a health scare. He quickly caught the cycling bug. Then when cancer claimed Joyce’s life last year he came up with the idea of the fundraising ride to Mojacar, where he and Pam have had a holiday home for 14 years, and where Joyce visited them many times.

With daughter Carol supporting him on the UK leg and friend Chris Hills accompanying him in a support car, Ian averaged about 75 to 80 miles a day.

Ian had trained with a cycling coach to prepare physically for the challenge, but ad-

“The most I’d cycled before back-toback was five 50-mile rides and one 80mile ride, so I didn’t know how I was going to cope,” he said.

As it turned out the training paid off.

“I was really pleased with the way my body stood up to it, but it got mentally tough at times and it was fighting that,” he said.

Ian’s lowest point was going over the Pyrenees. Having built himself up for what would inevitably be a tough day, dismal, wet weather made the ride up the mountain road even harder. By the final 10-mile climb he had a strong wind against him too.

He kept going all the way to the top, only for a mighty gust of wind to flip him over.

Fortunately he only suffered a few bruises.

Boredom was an issue on straight runs through unremarkable landscapes, but there were other days going through small villages and spectacular scenery which Ian described as an “absolute joy.”

Arriving in Poole on the south coast was another high point Ian said. “It was the psychological barrier of getting the first leg done.”

What really kept him going over the three weeks Ian said was thinking about why he was doing such as an epic bike ride.

ED: 1775 - JULY ACTION from the heart by the Turre sewing circle is set to help breast cancer sufferers following surgery.

The ladies have been putting their skills with needle and thread to excellent use, making dozens of heartshaped pads from soft, washable materials to go under the arm and support sore areas post op.

The sewing group’s Kim Gibson told the Euro Weekly News she first heard about the surgery pads idea from a male friend who had had breast cancer. He was offered one to help him drive, sleep and get on with daily life with the wound site protected.

When Kim saw the pads another friend made back in the UK she was, she said, “so impressed I brought the pattern to our sewing group and asked if anyone would like to help, which they all did.”

Kim explained that most breast cancer sufferers lose lymph nodes, hence the

Friends Martin Morris, Glenn Roulland and Rob Hillard chose the Alzheimer’s Society to benefit from the money they collected from taking on the challenge of the 2,100-kilometre self-supported cycle.

All three have family members who have been affected by the condition.

“It’s somebody saying I know you’re going through a lot and this is something to

say we’re thinking of you, as well as the practicalities of it.

“The fact they’re heartshaped also shows they’re coming from love to somebody who’s going through

treatment. It’s a lovely, lovely thing to do.”

MACS will give out the pads to people the charity helps and supports, including at its monthly patient survivor and care giver meetings.

The meetings are, Aileen explained, “a chance for people to get together, have a coffee and a chat, to meet other people going through similar things and to just not feel alone.

“It’s having a chance to be around people who understand what you’re going through. And that makes a heck of a difference.”

The sewing group is going to keep on producing the pads and supporting MACS, Kim said.

She now hopes more individuals or groups will be inspired to follow the Turre seamstresses’ example.

Smoke-free beaches VERA’S beaches are now smoke-free zones.

The municipality has joined the Junta de Andalucia Health and Families’ Department Smoking Plan Network, which is running a campaign to raise awareness about tobacco use and promote initiatives which create areas where smoking is not permitted.

The idea is to help prevent people from taking up smoking and to assist anyone trying to kick the habit. A further advantage is that non-smokers will be not be bothered by smokers’ fags.

The council hopes the beach smoking ban will also mean a cleaner coastline without the litter of cigarette butts.

Cigarette ends take between five and 10 years to decompose, contaminating the sea and negatively impacting on marine life. The local authority has signed up Vera to the Andalucia Smoking Plan Network for the next four years. The council said the move demonstrated its “commitment to developing a common active prevention strategy, making the population aware of maintaining our beaches free of tobacco smoke.”

Extreme weather wreaks havoc ED: 1785 - SEPTEMBER EXTREME weather which hammered the province last w e e k w re a k e d h a v o c a n d cost one man his life.

The Senagalese died after becoming trapped in his vehicle in a flooded tunnel in Almeria City early on Friday morning following a massive downpour which saw more than 90 litres of water per square metre fall in just an hour.

The so-called ‘cold snap’ produced torrential rains across much of the province on Thursday and Friday. An impressive electrical storm lit up the night sky across the Levante area in the early hours of Saturday morning. The storms also dropped huge hailstones in some places.

It was a frantic few days for the provincial emergency services.

Some roads were partially or completely cut off by floodwater or by accumulations of stones and mud in areas including Pulpi, Olula del Rio, Velez-Blanco, Taberno, HuercalOvera, Chirivel, Nijar and Cuevas del Almanzora. San Jose and the Cabo de Gata area of Almeria City

The Legion stepped in to evacuate around 60 people from a Cabo de Gata campsite after a watercourse overflowed its banks in the early hours of Friday morning. Some streets in the area were turned into lakes, leaving residents trapped.

The water washed away the asphalt from the San Jose main access road and the force of the torrent which surged down the rambla literally divided the beach in two.

There were callouts to help people who ended up trapped in their

vehicles in usually dry watercourses or on flooded roads in P u l p i , Ve l e z - R u b i o , H u e r c a l Overa, Taberno, and Tabernas, and in tunnels and garages in Almeria City.

There were also reports of flooded basements and garages in locations including Albox, Olula del Rio and Maceal.

The extreme weather prompted the authorities to temporarily close Almeria airport on Friday morning, resulting in the cancellation of two flights, the diversion of two others to Malaga and a delay to a fifth.

The train service from Pulpi was cut after the storm dumped some 150 litres of water on the municipality in the space of just a few hours on Thursday night, causing watercourses to overflow and leaving the municipality virtually isolated.

Classes for around 40,000 of the province’s schoolchildren were cancelled on Friday due to the appalling weather conditions.

The province’s ordinary and intensive agriculture sectors were severely hit by the extreme weather. Rural roads became impassable and accesses to farms were blocked.

There has been widespread damage to rural infrastructure, greenhouses and crops; in the Almanzora Valley and Los Velez regions as much as 50 per cent of the almond crop could have been lost.

The UPA Andalucia union representing small-scale farmers has requested the Agriculture Ministry declare affected areas catastrophe zones.

Assessments of the aftermath of the extreme weather up and down the province showed there was damage to roads, watercourses, water networks and the electricity supply, as well as to private properties.

‘The Crown’ to shoot in Almeria SCENES for Netflix hit series ‘The Crown’ will be shot in Almeria in October.

The Almeria City mayor has signed an agreement with Ten Cents Films, the company responsible for the overseas shoots for the fourth season of the international hit drama, in which Oscar winning actress Olivia Coleman plays the Queen.

Council head Ramon FernandezPacheco revealed the provincial capital will appear in the credits and items used in the filming will be exhibited in the city’s Casa de Cine.

In return, as an incentive the production company is exonerated of paying taxes for the shoot.

Ten Cents’ Ramon Caravaca explained that Almeria will play the part of a number of different places in the world.

“We want you to be aware of the great potential which Almeria has for shoots,” he commented.

The city’s role as The Crown location “is an opportunity we cannot let pass,” the mayor stressed.

Declaring himself a fan of the programme, Fernandez-Pacheco said the agreement with Ten Cents represented “another step forward in the most ambitious project in which the public administrations are working to make Almeria a current and future land of cinema, without forgetting its filming past.”

ED: 1787 - OCTOBER THE woman found guilty of murdering eight-year-old Gabriel Cruz has got life.

On Monday the Almeria Provincial Court sentenced Ana Julia Quesada to a maximum permanent reviewable prison sentence for killing Gabriel in Cabo de Gata in February last year with the aggravating circumstance of a family relationship with the little boy.

Quesada is the first women to be sentenced to serving life with a possibility of parole after a minimum fixed term since the punishment was introduced into Spanish Law in 2015.

The court also sentenced the 45-year-old Dominican to three years behind bars for psychological injuries to Gabriel’s father Angel Cruz, with whom she was in a relationship at the time of the youngster’s death,

LIFE SENTENCE: Ana Julia Quesada received a maximum permanent reviewable prison sentence for killing Gabriel Cruz, eight. and two years and nine months for psychological injuries to his mother Patricia Ramirez.

Record breaking veggie mosaic ED: 1790 - OCTOBER ALMERIA has gained its second Guinness World Record, this time with the largest ever heartmosaic made entirely from fruit and vegetables.

Twenty tonnes of provincially produced tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, aubergine, pumpkins and courgettes went into creating the 603.15sqm green heart at the municipal fairground.

It was a colourful feast for the eyes when it was finished, featuring a bright yellow indalo

at its centre and accompanied by the message +Salud Almeria.

Guinness World organisation official judge Anna Orford had come from London to verify Almeria’s effort had snatched the record from India, which held the title for five years with a 480sqm heart.

Receiving the certificate on behalf of the city council and the vegetable company behind the initiative, Almeria mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pachecocommented, “today we have once again taken a step forward in the aim of gaining renown as the gastronomic capital.”

What’s more, he said, it had been achieved with “something intrinsic to us,” which he described as the “healthy fruit of the labours of the thousands of people who work in our agrofood industry.”

Fernandez-Pacheco gave a hearty thanks to all those involved in the record-breaking initiative, and took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of a healthy diet, featuring fruit and veg like that for the giant heart.

The record-breaking mosaic heart attempt was staged to mark World Food Day and as part of this year’s extensive programme of Almeria 2019 Gastronomy Capital of Spain promotional events. The mayor also underlined the success of the gastronomy capital status in putting Almeria on the map as a foodie tourist destination.

Back in June Almeria made it into the Guinness World Records for the biggest ever gazpacho, snatching the tile from Portugal with 9,800 litres of the cold soup.

The deputy with responsibility for measures on addressing depopulation, Fernando Gimenez, said he was working with New Technology deputy Domingo Fernandez and with fibre optic operators.

Gimenez explained that as an initial step the provincial administration has carried out an exhaustive study on existing cover, to assess w hich m u n i c i p a l i t i e s a lready h a v e f i b r e o p tic, which don’t, and which are the areas where installation will present the most complications.

The deputy maintained it is the Diputacion’s firm intention to get the fibre optic initiative up and running.

Hash boat haul A BRIT is one of four ED: 1791 - NOV under arrest following the interception of a boat loaded with more than 3,000 kilos of hashish in Almeria waters.

The Almeria Guardia Civil Maritime Service caught up with the leisure craft as part of a European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) operation after it was pinpointed by an Icelandic aircraft.

The Guardia said the aircraft spotted the craft alongside an inflatable dinghy loaded with sackcloth bundles, 15 miles from the Alboran Sea. The CECORVIGMAR Coasts and Frontiers Maritime Surveillance Centre alerted the Almeria Guardia, which immediately mobilised its boat the Rio Nacimiento. The patrol found the suspicious boat heading for the Almeria coast.

On board they discovered bundles containing large amounts of the drug. A thorough search of the boat once it was in Almeria port revealed there were 93 bundles stashed in the hold and cabins, adding up to a total weight of 3,100 kilos.

The Guardia identified the detainees as 58-year-old JCC from the UK, and three middle-aged Poles.

A large banner bearing the message ‘Huercal-Overa says NO to Gender Violence’ and featuring stars with messages of hope and decorated by local schoolchildren was the centerpiece of the acts in HuercalOvera.

Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez summed up the reasons for putting the genderbased violence at the top of the agenda, commenting, “knowing we are facing a real problem that we have to try and eradicate, we have to work together to put a stop to this violence which ends the lives of women and children and breaks up families.”

In the provincial capital representatives of the Government Sub-delegation in Almeria, the Junta de Andalucia, the Diputacion de Almeria and the city council took part in official acts.

They included a minute’s silence in memory of all the women who have died at the hands of their partners or expartners, numbering nearly 40 in the province since 2003.

WITH Brexit possibly around the corner, if you have less than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later.

Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed.

For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire.

No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer.

Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time.

There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything.

Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online.

As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a white background, a selfie taken with a

phone will probably work ok.

If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card.

As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check.

When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you.

The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online.

You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages.

In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga.

For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

MOVE over Boxing Day, Black Friday is now collecting more money in the UK. Traditionally, crowds flock to the Boxing Day sales but there has been a much worse turn out than expected with one research compa­ ny suggesting that spending will be down just under 10 per cent com­ pared to last year.

It didn’t help that the weather was bad and some high street shops started their online sales on Christ­ mas Eve so shoppers could stay at home and still get the bargains.

THE success of the Deliveroo operation in the UK has seen it being wooed by heavy hitters such as Amazon and Uber who both wish to take it over.

It has grown very quickly since it was founded in London in 2013 and now has operations in many European and Asian countries including Spain.

Now it wants to sell part of its shareholding to Amazon which has been looking to get back into the rapidly expanding fast food delivery business but the British Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) isn’t so

Basically, Amazon has two options, one to buy into a company such as De­ liveroo or alternatively set up its own competing business (which it did in 2016 but soon pulled out) and the CMA fears that such an investment in the company could be bad for customers, grocers and restaurants as there would be reduced competition.

The CMA’s executive director, An­ drea Gomes da Silva, said: “Millions of people in the UK use online food plat­

forms for takeaways, and more than ever are making use of similar services for the same­day delivery of groceries and we are worried about lessening of competition.”

That then is the problem and unless and until the two companies are able to persuade the CMA that its fears are groundless, approval will not be given for the investment.

Any purchase in the UK is likely to in­ clude other markets such as Spain where Deliveroo operates in many large towns and cities.

The Calma Card AS an experiment, the Deutsche Bank and MasterCard are launching what they say is the first bank card in Spain to use motion code technology.

The Calma Deutsche Bank Card will allow the security code (shown by the CVC label on the reverse) to change auto­ matically every four hours in or­ der to increase security as it doesn’t allow thieves to clone or benefit by data theft on on­ line transactions This card also offers insur­ ance cover for theft or robbery to cover the value of any stolen purchases.

THE currency market was charac­ terised by its unpredictability in 2019, with heightened geopoliti­ cal tensions infusing significant volatility into the major curren­ cies.

And it looks like we may be in for more of the same in 2020 as many of the key 2019 currency trends look set to continue to dominate market sentiment over the next 12 months.

ECB and Germany could weak­ en the euro EUR/GBP in 2019: High £0.93, Low £0.82 EUR/USD in 2019: High $1.15, Low $1.08 The European Central Bank is al­ so likely to demand attention this year as it wrestles with an increas­ ingly fragile outlook in the Euro­ zone, not to mention Germany’s recent economic woes, which have

A wide­ranging review of the ECB’s strategy will begin in Janu­ ary, with Christine Lagarde (who took the helm at the ECB back in November) already signalling a willingness to deviate from the policy path forged by her prede­ cessors.

If further easing is unleashed to

support the currency bloc, or if Germany does indeed slip into a recession, the euro could tumble.

Brexit to keep pound pressured GBP/EUR in 2019: High €1.20, Low €1.06 GBP/USD in 2019: High $1.35, Low $1.20 For GBP investors, Brexit will re­ main the pressing issue. While Boris Johnson’s election victory

may have allowed him to success­ fully pass his EU Withdrawal deal, this marks the end of only the first stage of negotiations.

In 2020 Johnson will embark on phase two of the talks, which will see the UK attempt to hash out the terms of a trade deal and its future relationship with the EU be­ fore the end of its transition peri­ od in December.

With Johnson reluctant to pur­ sue any more delays, there is a clear risk of the process resulting in a no­deal Brexit at the end of the year, the threat of which is likely to limit any upside in the pound.

Trade and Trump to drive US dollar USD/GBP in 2019: High £0.83, Low £0.74 USD/EUR in 2019: High €0.91, Low €0.86 Across the pond we will see US politics return to the fore this year, with impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump and the

2020 Presidential election both likely to drive volatility in the US dollar.

We won’t know who will be the 2020 Democratic candidate for a few more months, but the poten­ tial for Trump to be challenged by a Democrat who is viewed as eco­ nomically disruptive, such as Bernie Sanders, could prove USD negative this year.

As EUR/USD is the world’s most traded currency pairing, any US dollar losses could support the eu­ ro.

Also in the spotlight for USD in­ vestors will be the ongoing trials and tribulations of the US­China trade talks.

With a preliminary phase one deal now apparently agreed by both sides, the focus will turn to whether a more comprehensive deal can be reached in 2020.

With so many key events on the calendar, 2020 could shape up to be even more volatile than 2019.

And so that was Christmas

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT SURROUNDED by family and friends, hopefully many of you will have once more enjoyed this special and much­ loved occasion. I’m pretty sure most of you will have also observed the ritu­ als and time­honoured Christmas Day traditions that we have been famil­ iarised with over the generations.

In the beginning we are the babies, crawling around the base of the tree with the young mums of the family lightly admonishing us as we endeav­ our to pull baubles and shiny bits of tinsel from the lower branches.

Over the next few years we morph into the youngsters, excitedly tearing off the paper from presents, brought by a Santa we are becoming slightly more skeptical about, but still pre­ pared to give the benefit of the doubt ­ just as long as we receive at least a proportion of the presents we asked him for!

The next stage in our Christmas generation game sees us become one of the young and mid­aged adults who, having finally got the youngsters off to bed, are pouring copious mea­

MOST LOVED POSITION: Grandparents enjoy a privileged position at Christmas. sures of alcohol and consuming about a million calories in Quality Street and mince pies, while relating what we consider hilarious tales of past Christ­ mas turkey disasters. All being played out against a back drop of East Enders, Coronation Street, the Queen’s mes­ sage and yet another rerun of Dr Zhivago on the box.

Generations later, if we last long enough, we find ourselves in the twi­ light of our years, quietly enjoying the utterly spoiled and most loved exulted position you can attain. You become Grandpa/Grandma. And that’s where this ol’ boy has finally found himself.

Grandpa (or in my situation Great Grandpa) is expected to do just about

nothing. He is not required to wash up, clear up, lift up furniture or top up the drinks. He occupies the most comfortable chair in the room (gener­ ally in the corner). Periodically he is asked by various family members if he ‘wants anything.’

He is allowed to doze off without being labelled a party pooper and is

subsequently not particularly worried that his chair is a little out of the way ­ just as long as he is close enough to occasionally interject the conversation with an ‘I remember when’ recollec­ tion of his own. These narratives are usually delivered to reassure the room (and himself) that he hasn’t actually ruined the whole Christmas celebra­ tions by selfishly deciding to slip away and meet his maker ­ thereby actually becoming an ‘I remember when’ sub­ ject for a whole host of future family Christmas gatherings!

It’s been a blast to be with my amazing family in Dublin this year.

Thanks for making yer ol’ Dad proud and happy once again.

SUPPORTING AND PROMOTING TRADITIONAL AND ARTISAN BUSINESSES IN ANDALUCIA CONSULAR MATTERS I HAVE been watching the televi­ sion series ‘The Crown’ a lot re­ cently, and it started me think­ ing about how many businesses and events I am invited to as a lawyer with the firm Just Law Spanish Solicitors and as the Danish Consul for Andalucia and Extremadura.

It is always very interesting to visit businesses in my capacity as trade delegate, and explore new possibilities of how to help Span­ ish businesses establish relations with foreign businesses, and in particular Danish companies.

Our regular readers will remem­ ber that I was recently invited to the city of Linares, to see first­ hand pâté production and then an

open an art exhibition, two very diverse organisations, but never­ theless informative.

Following this, last week I was invited to a beer tasting event at the San Miguel brewery in Mala­ ga, you might have seen this brewery when landing at Malaga airport; and I am also very well informed on just how popular San Miguel beer is in the United Kingdom!

I have to say that San Miguel have surpassed themselves in their visitor experience.

They have a dedicated tasting room with a beer Sommelier.

The tasting room is lit with an overhead digital projector which displays images appropriate to each one of the beers that are being tried, including ambient music relevant to the beer in question. But it does not end there, the projector also lights

up the tables.

The Sommelier explained the complex process involved in cre­ ating each beer and described the taste and how it is brought to blend and perform in the most exquisite way in all our senses.

A first for me was that each beer was served in a special glass with a particular tapa designed to bring out the best taste in the beer.

The more birthdays they have the more they seem to have some species of authority.

Longevity is not a signifier for authenticity and veracity much less taste. Yet longevity vouches for the endurance of a brand or marque though not always financial survival of the owner of the brand. Ownership of brands pass from one owner to another owner. Over the years each will add to the legend or be consumed by it.

This year 2019 marked the centenary of one such luxury brand, Bentley Motors. As the year comes to a close the affection that this brand has won has been fed back with what is a veritable tsunami of awards and prizes. Presented over the course of a year each a major event. Totalised and summed up at the end of this year they read as an as­ tonishing and rounded genuflection from its public and the wider industry. The awards though spoke not to history but rather to the present day production and output of the car manufacturer. So leading Bentley to make a proud boast, “Bentley Motors is the most sought after luxury car brand in the world.”

The FLYING SPUR was awarded four ‘Luxu­ ry Car of the Year’ prizes during 2019 . The CONTINENTAL GT meanwhile won plaudits across the planet, a ‘Car of the year’ in the Middle East and ‘Most stylish Car in Switzer­ land’, meant for 2020. Perhaps implying that no Swiss lady or gentleman may be stylish without the benefit of a Continental GT be­ neath them? Stepping out of a comfort zone and creating a winner in a new and unfamil­ iar category is hazardous. Bentley Motors is considered to have pulled it off with their Sports Utility Vehicle the BENTAYGA. Past glories were not lost to time and dis­ tance. Summer 2019 saw vintage as well as

newly minted motor cars on parade at the glorious annual vintage and collectors gath­ ering at Pebble Beach, California. An example of Bentley 1931 Gurney Nutting Sports Tour­ er won ‘Best of Show Awards.’

While the end product is at the centre of it all the team that keeps on delivering should also be applauded and has been. Awards for excellence in Management is almost expect­ ed though also for diversity and investing in the future through innovation as exemplified by the mouth­watering reception given to the Bentley EXP 100 GT suggests that the best may be yet to come.

Maybe we could simplify it further by saying that ‘wokeness’ means you’ve voluntarily placed a chip on your shoulder...

Next, transgender changing rooms in M&S stores. Why has M&S spent more effort on facilitating men’s desires rather than answer­ ing women’s needs? What is a woman shopping with kids, too young to be left unsupervised, sup­

Beautiful, beautiful San Sebastian TALK to almost every Spanish national about travelling around Spain, and they will all mention San Sebastian. And if you say that you’ve never been there, it’s greeted with a look of dismay, quickly followed by “it’s beautiful... you must go there!”

San Sebastian ­ or Donostia as it’s known to the local Basque Country population ­ is one of the most northerly of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations located on the Bay of Bis­ cay. San Sebastian’s most famous attraction is its great selection of beaches, but for those seeking a little more than a sunbathing holi­ day there is a wealth of history to be discov­ ered and a chance to learn about a whole dif­ ferent culture ­ and language ­ at the same time. If anything, a trip to San Sebastian feels like you’re visiting two countries for the price of one.

Much of the architecture that San Sebast­ ian offers is relatively modern, with one ex­ ample being the Buen Pastor Cathedral (or Cathedral of the Good Shepherd). Dominat­ ing the local skyline at 75 metres high (245 feet), construction began in 1888 with the of­ ficial documentation being signed by the two­

year­old King Alfonso XIII... the present King Felipe VI’s great grandfather.

The building was originally just a church and designated as being a cathedral in 1953, nine years before it was completed. Featuring the Gothic Revival style, it’s considered the most important church in San Sebastian and is an even more spectacular sight at night thanks to the lighting.

One of the most visited places in San Sebas­ tian is the Parte Vieja (Old Town). The quaint buildings famous for their very colourful roofs are protected from the sea by the Monte Ur­ gull. Traditional tourists that are looking for a more relaxed form of nightlife will quickly fall in love with the Parte Vieja when they get to know its trendy bars and cafes, and with the Basque Country being world famous for the quality of its cuisine, there is no problem in finding a quality restaurant or four. To walk off the food and drink, a stroll through the streets to see some of the city’s other famous churches ­ such as the Basilica of St Mary’s of the Chorus ­ is recommended, and as you do so try to imagine that until 1863, this historic Parte Vieja was surrounded by a wall.

NO SAFE HAVEN DEAR Euro Weekly and readers, Happy New Year! I read this paper every week to keep myself up­to­date and it se­ ems that we have seen a lot of violence in 2019 in Spain. It’s truly a shame as I consi­ dered the Mediterranean coast somewhat of a safe haven. It seems this could soon be no more. I truly don’t understand what we are coming to but would like to leave a message here. I know a lot of good people who help and really contribute to society in a positive way. If you are one of these peo­ ple, please keep doing what you do. You may not feel like it, but the world apprecia­ tes you and your work. Who we are and what we do may feel insignificant at times, but it all adds up to something very special.

Unrealistic choices A S 2 0 2 0 b e g i n s , p e o p l e e m b a r k o n t h e i r Ne w Year’s resolutions. The moment has finally arrived to face the objectives that keep being put off till January 1. But research proves that the outlook is bleak.

About half of all adults make a New Year’s resolution. However, less than 25 per cent of people stay committed to their goals for longer than 30 days and only 8 per cent of people accomplish them. The most common resolutions come in the form of lifestyle changes like losing weight and saving money.

The main reason that people don’t achieve their objectives is because they are generally unrealistic. Expectations about the speed and ease of completing resolutions also contributes to people falling victim to the false hope syndrome, leaving them disappointed.

Ancient Babylonians are considered to be the first civilization to make New Year’s resolutions, around 4,000 years ago. Celebrations were held in mid-March, when the year began with the planting of the crops. During a religious festival known as Akitu, Babylonians promised to pay their debts and return borrowed objects. If they didn’t keep their word, they would fall out of favour with the gods.

Despite these religious roots, resolutions today are focused on self-improvement. And although the rate of accomplishment is dismal, it doesn’t stop the tradition from continuing. After all, we’ve had thousands of years of practice.

81-year-old Grandmother dies on hard shoulder of UK motorway after being driven by ambulance 600 miles looking for bed: I am back in the UK now and even getting in to see a doctor is crazy. I had to wait seven weeks recently, al­ beit not an urgent need.

But having said that, my brother died in Spain in June because the ambulance refused to take him until I ran back to the apartment to get his health card. I had to leave him collapsed in the local square with strangers around him. Devastating. So, there is good and bad health care everywhere.

Fly safe THE worst and most unwel­ come souvenir to bring back home is a cold or a flu. And one of the most common places to catch a chill is on an aeroplane. Planes put a big group of people in close prox­ imity, creating a breeding ground for bacterium and viruses.

However, getting a flight doesn’t mean an assured bout of illness. There are certain tips that can help reduce the chances of catching other trav­ ellers’ ailments.

Viruses spread on planes be­ cause of the low humidity and air conditioning. Sitting by a window reduces contact with people in the aisle. Passengers should also adjust their air conditioning in the vents above the seat to blow germs away.

It may seem pointless, but wiping down the seat before sitting down can also minimise the chances of illness. Disinfec­ tant wet wipes or spray will do the job quickly and effectively and cleaning should be focused on the tray, armrests and seat­ belt.

Plenty of water to keep hy­ drated will also contribute to keeping in top shape. Finally, the golden rule that everyone should try to follow is to not sit near the toilets, as they are the busiest part of the cabin with the biggest germ concentration.

Dr Craig Ranson from the English Institute of Sport, spoke about these measures which apply both to travelling athletes as well as the general public. He indicated that the illness prevention campaign has proved effective so far,

with 40 per cent less illnesses among their ranks.

The most common illnesses which spread among people sitting in close quarters include colds, chest infections and bugs like the norovirus. They are spread through condensa­ tion in people’s breath, which is expelled when they talk or cough. These harmful microor­ ganisms can survive on hands or on hard surfaces and poten­ tially infect healthy individuals.

A study conducted in Canada compared illness transmission rates between people on flights and average com­ muters. The investigation led researchers to find that trans­ mission was 23 times more likely on a plane than on public transport, being the lack of fresh air one of the main cul­ prits.

With a clean base, toner and serum can then be ap­ plied. At night, a richer moisturiser or oil can be used to provide deep hy­ dration overnight. It’s im­ portant to note that a well­formulated mois­ turiser only requires a

Unsurprisingly almonds are one of the key ingredients in an Almerian classic dish, adding the distinctly nutty flavour to ‘ajo blanco,’ lit­ erally white garlic. Also known as white gaz­ pacho, this creamy, chilled soup is a must on menus in local eateries in the hotter months.

There are a few regional variations on the theme, but in this province it is typically made from bread, crushed almonds, garlic, olive oil and salt, making the very best of in­

gredients which back in Almeria’s less pros­ perous and pretty isolated past were easy to get hold of.

Opinions vary as the best tricks for making sure ajo blanco comes out well, but the com­ mon local wisdom is to use stale bread, possi­ bly soaking the bread and almonds overnight. Adding a dash of vinegar is anoth­ er tip. The soup is often served with a topping of raisins, apple or grapes, accompanied by toasted bread.

In this part of the world almonds are also found in rice dishes, are used to add some ex­ tra depth to chicken and fish dishes, and to create rich sauces.

Almonds added to yoghurt with dried fruit make a delicious breakfast or for a protein boost add almonds to a breakfast shake.

Sprinkling almonds on salads is a good way to pep them up a bit.

Almonds are found in cakes, marzipans and ice­creams. And of course no Christmas time household in Spain would be complete without ‘turron,’ a nougat­type confection typically made from honey, sugar, egg white and roasted almonds.

Paying Homage AN exhibition of hyper real­ ist paintings paying homage to farmers is on show at Adra’s Centro Cul­ tural.

The ‘Mis manos. Mi vida’ (My hands. My life) collec­ tion of works by Manuel Higueras, a Malaga artist widely considered one of the best working in the hy­ per realist genre in Spain, is being exhibited at the Adra venue thanks to an Almeria City art gallery.

The paintings are de­ scribed as a reflection of the artist’s desire to show “the strength and sacrifice of agricultural sector work­ ers as a source of inspira­ tion and admiration.”

Each of the six works fea­ tures the hands of people of different nationalities hold­ ing products which are vital­ ly important for Adra’s agri­ cultural industry, including tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and peppers.

Mojacar debut WATERCOLOURIST Lourdes Martinez de Arbuto has her first exhibition in Mojacar.

The show at Mojacar Pueblo’s La Fuente Art Mu­ nicipal Art Centre features the artist’s landscapes of Almeria, northern Spain and other European locations.

Passionate about art and artistic expression, Lourdes divides her time between creating and her profession as a primary school teacher.

She has a life “among chil­ dren, drawings and paint­ ings,” she says.

She expresses herself in one of the most difficult painting techniques, water­ colour, recreating shapes, dreams and illusions. The ex­ hibition reflects San Sebast­ ian­based Lourdes’ evolution as an artist.

Lourdes is a frequent visi­ tor to Mojacar. She loves Almeria’s light and “the con­ trast between the dark, rocky mountain and the ever­ changing Mediterranean Sea.”

Mojacar Education council­ lor Ana Garcia commented on the high standard of Lour­ des’ watercolours, and the work shown regularly at the art centre, saying there is a full calendar of exhibitions

lined up for 2020.

The watercolour exhibition runs until January 6, opening hours 9am to 1pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 1pm at weekends. Entrance is free of charge.

With more than 50 years’ experience dedicated to ar­ chitectural projects, design, oil painting and other forms of artistic expression, Epi­ fanio Serna has gained pop­ ularity in Spain and in many other countries.

AIM: The Public Works deputy said the objective is to prevent water cuts.

THE Diputacion de Almeria is investing in the Fines water network.

The administration has put out to tender the €215,000 project, which comes under the 2019 Almeria Hydrological Infrastructure Plan.

Public Works deputy Oscar Liria explained the objective is to “bring water cuts to an end and to automate the municipal tank.”

The works include replacing obsolete pipes along a nearly five-kilometre stretch.

Uncovering heritage THE first phase of the third ‘Macael Viejo’ excavation campaign has wound up.

The site dig is not only important in revealing more about the municipality’s heritage, but is also considered a major archaeological project for all the Upper Almanzora.

The 2017 and 2018 campaigns, and now the third, are financed by Macael Council. They form part of the PGI General Investigation Project, which is authorised by the Junta de Andalucia’s Culture and

Historic Heritage department, and which aims to analyse the site and its context within the region.

The project is described as pioneering for the Upper Almanzora as the first to centre on one specific site and for the use of stratigraphic survey excavation methods.

The team of site investigators are mainly linked with the University of Granada and the Autonomous University of Madrid, under the coordination of Dr A Santiago Moreno Perez.

BARRY DUKE EVER hear of Kansai Yamamoto? No? Well neither had I until I spotted a frightful garment languishing on a charity shop rail. It was so grotesque that I thought it had been created by someone who’d been licking too many psychedelic toads.

Apart from the raised bands of fabric along its sleeves and shoulders that made it look it like the carapace of a Stegosaurus, the shiny black blouson had attached to the front a large metal plate that bore the letter K, which I as­ sumed had now’t to do with Kellogg’s.

Nevertheless, I slipped it on. One glance in a mirror told me that, were I to wear it in public, the Fashion Police would be on my case immediately and have me hauled off for psychiatric eval­ uation.

I replaced it and walked out. Then some sixth sense drew me back, and, on examining the label closely, saw the name Kansai Yamamoto. I asked an as­ sistant if the name meant anything to her.

‘Motorcycle, innit?,’ she wise­ cracked, snapping her chewing gum loudly. I asked her to set it aside for me while I did some research. ‘Sure,’ she

An hour later, all excited and out of breath, I charged back into the store, threw £5.00 across the counter and rushed back home to

put the thing on eBay. Yamamoto, I discovered, was a Japanese designer who launched a company in 1971 that specialised in wacky designs. It quickly became renowned for its many avant­garde col­ lections ­ and among his clients was

David Bowie (the picture on this page shows the Tokyo Pop bodysuit he creat­ ed for the singer).

Within an hour bids for this ghastly garment reached £300. In the end there was a bidding war between two bou­ tiques: one in New York and the other

in Paris. The French store won the jack­ et for a tad over £350.00!

I returned immediately to the shop in the fervent hope of finding other Ya­ mamoto creations, but to no avail.

What I DID find was a stunning, brand new pair of genuine snakeskin boots in my size, made by an Italian company called Jo Ghost.

They were perfect in every respect bar one. They were a repulsive bright green! But I coughed up £15 for the boots, which normally retailed around £350, dyed them black and am still wearing them today, roughly 15 years since I first acquired them.

What brought back memories of my forays into charity shops was the discov­ ery this week that someone has created a Facebook page for people who find bargains in ‘chazza’ shops.

It’s called ‘Charity Shop Not So Sh*t Finds’ but nothing on it came anywhere close to the Yamamoto blouson, the Jo Ghost boots ­ or a 1950s black sheep­ skin flying jacket I found for a tenner in Age Concern. I was offered 200 quid for that jacket but refused to part with it, and brought it with me to Spain.

But sadly, in almost 10 years on the Costa Blanca, I've not encountered a single day cold enough to wear it.

Powered by a very responsive 138 hp 1.4­litre turbo­petrol en­ gine, the Swift Sport delivers a zesty 0­100 kph time of 8.1 sec­ onds and has outstanding han­ dling characteristics to keep it firmly planted on the corners. The Swift has a larger interior thanks to a wider platform and slightly lowered seats boosting headroom, and a longer wheel­ base which creates more rear passenger space. Seating is comfortable and supportive and there is a good driving posi­

tion with excellent visibility.

Boot space of 265 litres is slight­ ly smaller than that of some ri­ vals, but is expandable to 579 litres by dropping the rear seats.

Underway, the Swift Sport is smooth and eagerly responsive,

CHELSEA produced a stun­ ning late comeback to beat Arsenal 2­1 in the Premier League on Sunday, consign­ ing Mikel Arteta to defeat on his home debut as coach of the north London side.

Pierre­Emerick Aubameyang gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute but Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno’s howler handed Jorgin­ ho an equaliser on a plate af­ ter 83 minutes.

Four minutes later, Tammy Abraham settled a bad­tem­ pered London derby when he drilled through Leno’s legs.

Arsenal, 12th, started with great intensity, forcing Frank Lampard’s tired­looking Chelsea back, until Aubameyang broke the dead­ lock after 13 minutes with an acrobatic header.

ELITE Samurai swordsmen are coming to Mojacar.

Members of the Andalu­ cia and Spanish national Iai­ do (Japanese sword) team will be attending a training session at the Nexa sports facility in Mojacar on Satur­ day January 11 from 9am to 1pm.

The event is being organ­ ised by Javier Tirado Contr­ eras 3rd Dan, who is re­ sponsible for the Andalucia Iaido team. Javier is also a member of the Spanish na­ tional team and a European gold medallist.

Leading the session will be Karl Gibbons 5th Dan, who is a former UK team manager and coach to Eu­ ropean and UK gold medal­ lists.

Karl retired four years ago and now spends his winters in Mojacar. He teaches regularly at the Ishindenshin club in Alme­ ria, where, he says, he has been very welcome by Javier Tirado Contreras and the other club members.

Chelsea fight back ho after 34 minutes and changed from a 3­4­3 forma­ tion to 4­3­3, as he did on Boxing Day against Southamp­ ton, and it helped the visitors find a foothold at a fired­up Emirates Stadium.

Karl told the Euro Weekly News the hope is the Mo­ jacar date will be the first of a bi­ monthly event held to develop the Andalucia Sword Team.

“It is wonderful to be able to assist with this pro­ gramme and to hold this event in Mojacar, which is a town that I love,” Javier commented.

“The art of Iaido is thriv­ ing in Andalucia. This is a great opportunity to devel­ op a sense of community, to assist in athletes’ per­ sonal development and to make people aware of our sport. I am really looking forward to it.”

There is a seated viewing gallery at the sports centre for members of the public who would like to watch the ses­ sion.

Abraham saw one effort blocked and another saved by Leno in the second half, while Arsenal substitute Joe Willock fired narrowly wide.

Then with the clock ticking down Leno missed his punch as he tried to reach Mason Mount’s free kick, allowing Jorginho a simple tap­in at the far post.

On Leno’s error, Arteta said: “He will be down and when an error costs points it’s harder. We have to respect what he’s done at the club and get him back on board.”

Abraham and Willian broke at lightning pace and com­ bined for the English striker to net the second against a shell­ shocked Arsenal, his 12th league goal of the campaign.

After the match, Arteta commented on the absence of midfielder Granit Xhaka, whose agent said this week the player has informed Arse­ nal of his desire to join Bun­ desliga side Hertha Berlin.

“He played well at Bournemouth and after he started to feel ill, and the last two days he’s been in bed,” Arteta said of the former club captain.

“I hope he doesn’t leave.”
