Illegal delivery service GUA R DIA CIV IL arrested a 35-year-old man for running a drug delivery service in Adra.

The detention follows an investigation into a marked increase in drug sale activities in the municipality.

It became apparent that a peddler was providing drugs for clients by pre-order, normally agreeing to meet in discreet locations where they would go unnoticed, and using three different vehicles belonging to

his family to make the deliveries without attracting the attention of the authorities.

The drug sales activity stopped for a while, but then started back up again.

Within weeks the Guardia managed to identify the suspect and the vehicles he drove for his delivery appointments.

Officers discreetly kept an eye on him, finally intercepting him when he was off to make a sale of illegal substances.

The Guardia reported the 35-year-old was initially very calm, having hidden the drugs he was carrying in his car. However, a sharpeyed officer spied part of a packet of a dose of cocaine sticking out from under the steering wheel cover.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to seizure of 27 packets of coke, 80 grammes of hashish and €237.

The suspect, identified as JSJ, was charged with a crime against public health.

Torched skip arrest POLICE arrested a 19-year-old for torching a paper recycling skip in Almeria City.

The detention relates to an incident in October, when the fire service was called out to extinguish the blaze on Calle Firmamento.

The company responsible for the recycling

service reported the fire, which caused nearly €1,000 of damage. Police investigations confirmed the fire had been started on purpose.

Thanks to footage from nearby security cameras they identified the suspected arsonist, a young man with a police record.

THE Torrecardenas in Almeria City is ranked among the 30 most reputed public hospitals in Spain, putting it in fifth place for Andalucia. The hospital rises 14 places this year in the annual Health Reputation Monitor study, which is based on six evaluations and 25 sources of information.

Plant protest SOME 300 people took part in a demonstration in front of Carboneras Town Hall on Sunday morning to protest at the possible closure of the municipality’s coal-fired thermal power plant and to call for help. The protestors said the plant closure would affect the whole town.

Fall cash THE Consultative Council of Andalucia has ruled that the company responsible for cleaning Almeria City’s streets should compensate a resident who fell on a public pavement covered with soap and water, but with no warning signs.

The resolution supports Almeria City Council’s proposal to pay €37,729.99.

Internet out ALMERIA City Council was without 80 per cent of its internet access and municipal intranet for more than a day after a machine cut through a fibre optic cable providing service to the town hall during road works.

MORE than 67,000 people around the province have been vaccinated against flu since the current campaign got underway on October 28, the Junta de Andalucia Health and Families regional ministry reported. Nearly 44,000 of those getting flu jabs in Almeria were aged over 65.

LET THERE BE LIGHT Madrid’s Botanical Gardens will shine brightly with magical illuminations for the festive period.

FROM November 19 to January 6, the Royal Botanical Gardens open its gates to reveal a glittering wonderland.

The Christmas Garden project, which has been running in London for six years under the name C h r i s t m a s a t K e w, w i l l f i l l t h e botanical gardens with Christmas lights and figures which complement the beautiful and varied plant life. A 1.5km-long twinkling trail awaits children and adults of all ages and is the perfect way to kick

off the Christmas season.

The innovative initiative has already featured in other European cities for example in the Botanical Gardens of Berlin, Stuttgart and Dresden.

“Celebrate Christmas in a beautiful environment. Away from the burdens associated with other activities of these days of hustle and bustle,” explains Itxaso Barrios, general director of the production company Letsgo When winter twilight falls, the

Botanic’s lights will come on creating a fairytale landscape. A show that highlights an impressive flora and original figures in a magical place.

“Some trees and other species will be decorated with lights. In addition, we have decorated the promenade with some structures.

And all accompanied by music.” A soundtrack that moves away from the traditional Christmas carols but that will help to achieve that floral Christmas atmosphere.

Drugs in family home

Machete attack

GUARDIA CIVIL discovered a marihuana plantation in a family home in Roquetas de Mar. Neighbours’ complaints about the overwhelming smell of the drug emanating from the property and other indicators pointed to large-scale marihuana cultivation activities, a Guardia raid revealing 366 marihuana plants.

Three adults were arrested. There were also a seven and an 11-year old in the house, who the Guardia said had been living with the plants on a daily basis. Given the drugs and what the Guardia described as dirty, unhygienic conditions, officers called in social services to take care of the children.

As well as the plants the Guardia seized six grammes of buds and 6.5 grammes of hashish. There were bits of marihuana all over the property, including in a bedside table in one of the children’s rooms. In addition to drug offences, the trio face charges for defrauding the electricity supply.

A 62-YEAR-OLD man is under arrest for attacking a tattoo parlour manager in Roquetas de Mar with a machete.

The 37-year-old victim was at work when the aggression took place. He suffered a number of blows to the head and a deep cut on his forearm, which made it impossible for him to extend his fingers.

A call to the 062 number alerted the Guardia Civil to the attack. When the patrols arrived they immediately called out a health emergency team who rushed the victim to the Poniente hospital by ambulance.

A reconstruction of events, an examination of the evidence and witness interviews and statements pointed the investigation in the direction of the suspect identified as JFJB. The victim confirmed this was his attacker after picking him out from photographs, leading to the 62-year-old’s detention on charges of inflicting bodily harm.

When the property owner appeared officers carried out a more thorough inspection. They noticed that the iron grill on one of the side walls had been pulled out and thrown on the ground.

The smell of marihuana coming out of the window was overwhelming.

The first thing officers came across inside the building was an advanced closed circuit TV system for observing anyone who approached. They went on to find in various rooms a total of 195,200 kilos of

marihuana, most of it packaged up for distribution, 34,900 kilos of hashish, two firearms and abundant ammunition.

They also found precision scales, packing and sealing machines and other items used for processing and packaging drugs as well as a top-of the-range vehicle and a lot of documentation. The warehouse owner, identified as 48-year-old JJPP, has been charged with crimes against public health and illegal gun ownership.

The Guardia said the operation remains open and further arrests have not been ruled out.

Recycling in fashion RECYCLING unwanted clothes, shoes and general textiles like towels and sheets is a growing trend in Almeria.

The Sector II Waste Consortium reported it collected 46,130 kilos of items deposited in the 92 designated skips located in the 48 municipalities in which it operates over the first half of the year. This represented a 6.6 per cent increase on the 43,266 kilos collected last year.

The consortium attributed the growth to two factors. First simply because there are now more

clothes recycling skips, but also because there is a greater public awareness about the importance of recycling in general thanks to environmental campaigns.

The three provincial municipalities with the top clothes, shoes and textile recycling record in the first half of the year are Huercal de Almeria, with 14,884 kilos, followed by Viator on 4,178 and Carboneras with 3,516.

The Consortium also praised residents in other municipalities for the amount they recycled despite having relatively small pop-

ulations, including Rioja, with 947 kilos, and Lubrin, where just under 668 kilos were deposited over the six months.“These figures confirm the consortium’s high level of commitment, which strives to increase the containers provided and to carry out awareness-raising campaigns, but also, more than anything, the commitment of residents to the great challenge which we currently face: respecting and looking after the environment and recycling,” commented consortium president Ismael Torres.

Guardia collar known drug peddler GUARDIA Civil arrested a known drug peddler in Benahadux after finding drugs prepared for sale in his car.

The detention came after a patrol noticed a vehicle parked on a public road with the lights on but no-one inside. Officers identified the owner, as JECM, an individual with an extensive record for drugs-related offences.

A few minutes later the owner appeared. When he saw the Guardia he became clearly nervous, prompting suspicions he could be hiding ille-

Small town appeal THE Almeria government has set out a €2 million investment plan aimed at making the province’s small towns more appealing to visitors.

Diputacion de Almeria President Javier A Garcia said the 20202021 Municipal Embellishment Plan would principally benefit the 91 municipalities with less than 10,000 inhabitants, most of which are located inland, with the emphasis on the best projects orientated towards caring for the environment and tourism.

Also given priority will be the use of Almeria-produced natural stone as a means of boosting the provincial marble industry.

The Diputacion maintains its plan is pioneering and is part of the administration’s strategy for encouraging people not to move away from Almeria’s interior through improvements related to tourism, culture, history and the environment.

The thinking is that investing in villages and towns’ heritage and appearance will not only be a plus point for local residents, but will also contribute to balanced and sustainable economic activity as more people will be encouraged to visit.

Speaking at the plan presentation, at which he was accompanied by Public Works deputy Oscar Liria and Tourism Deputy Fernando Gimenez, the Diputacion President described the plan as “one of the many initiatives this government team has put into action to combat depopulation.

“We want the interior of Almeria to be increasingly more attractive so that it is increasingly more visited and hence its economy and employment grow.”

Among the kinds of actions outlined in the plan are the creation, upgrading and maintenance of parks and improvements to streets and plazas. Also better tourist information, like signposting and maps, and improvements to and the creation of tourist-orientated facilities including museums, visitor centres, viewing points and routes.

Success of PAWS-PATAS fundraising fayre THE PAWS-PATAS animal charity annual Christmas Fayre was a resounding success.

The event venue, the Plaza Estrella del Cantal in Mojacar, was packed all morning.

There was an amazing array of items on sale, including handmade jewellery, ornaments, garments, cards and toys, as well as a raffle offering great prizes. Music was provided by the Sue Moretta Choir, who performed a selection of contemporary and Christmas songs.

Monies raised from the donated entry fee, raffle and stall holders totalled €2,137. From this amount, €370 raised by the cat team will go towards their neutering campaign. The remain-

der will go towards building the much needed quarantine unit at the PAWS-PATAS shelter.

On Saturday December 14, Iceland (Overseas) stores throughout Spain are raising money for various charities. The Vera branch has chosen PAWS-PATAS. There will be helpers all day packing the customers’ bags of Christmas goody provisions, plus a tombola and lots of information about the animal charity.

PAWS-PATAS is always in need of extra voluntary help, either in one of the charity’s four outlets or caring for the animals, fostering or helping with administration and fundraising.

OPEN INVESTIGATION: Police reported that further arrests are expected.

Paperwork fraud scam, 20 arrested TWENTY people are under arrest in Almeria and Roquetas de Mar as part of a police investigation into an immigrant paperwork fraud scam.

Police said the head of the network dedicated to supplying fake papers to foreigners living in the province without the necessary paperwork was among the detainees. Also, that he had been arrested in 2014 and 2018 for similar offences.

Police reported non-EU citizens were paying up to €2,000 for fraudulent documentation which they could use to make applications for legal residency in Spain. Investigations began at the beginning of September in

collaboration with the Almeria Immigration office. Investigators detected immigrants making residency and work permit requests through the usual channels using fake documents to support their applications in accordance with the legal requirements in order to carry out their own business projects, which then turned out to be non-existent.

The investigation established that an agency assisting clients with administrative matters in Aguadulce was processing all the said authorisations and false documents. They identified the company boss, a Roquetas resident of Moroccan origin, as the individual responsible.

Police said that as well as providing all the paperwork demanded by the Immigration office, he also supplied false business projects for self-employed workers, home and business premises rental contracts, foreign company employment diplomas and certificates, and even medical assistance reports, all of which was used to try and show a foreign resident complied with the requirement of living for more than three years in Spain.

Investigators seized considerable amounts of incriminating paperwork during the operation.

The investigation remains open to establish the full extent of the scam.

Funds for rural roads THE Almeria government has announced investments adding up to €10.5 million in rural roads across the province.

Diputacion de Almeria president Javier A Garcia unveiled details of the administration’s 2020-2021 rural road plan at a presentation in in El Ejido, one of the most important municipalities in the province for the agricultural sector.

Garcia underlined what he said was the Diputacion’s support for agriculture and farmers, pointing to what adds up to €27.4 million the administration has allocated to rural road plans running from 2016 to 2021.

the new plan as ‘ambitious,’ and said there were projected investments in all of Almeria’s 103 municipalities.

El Ejido mayor Francisco Gongora credited the provincial government for his municipality having been able to carry out works on some 20 rural lanes which he maintained are ‘vital’ due to the high levels of traffic which use them and which provide access to farms and cooperatives.

“These plans have been a lifeline for us,” Gongora said, adding, “this help is fundamental for improving not only our roads but also for supporting our most important economic sector.”

Health needs diagnosis JUNTA DE ANDALUCIA health ministry delegate for the province Juan de la Cruz Belmonte was in Mojacar last week to review the municipality’s objectives on health.

These include the 2020-2030 Infrastructure Plan, collaborations with local associations to develop a social health project, a new framework for health welfare and staffing needs.

Between them the two Mojacar health centres cover a resident population of more than 6,000. The village centre provides a service for 1,000 patients with one doctor, a nurse and a council administrator.

The beach centre has three doctors (who are each responsible for 1,500, 1,400 and 1,700 patients), a paediatrician, three nurses, a clinic assistant and two council administrators.

It also offers a 24-hour primary care emergency service.

The out-of-hours service provided from 3pm until 8am, including week-

ends, has a duty team made up of a doctor, nurse, duty guard and ambulance personnel.

Between June and September the municipality’s population increases six-fold. To meet the greater demand for medical treatment an additional morning surgery is set up with a doctor attending out-of-town patients, plus extra doctors and nurses in July and August.

The need to strengthen Mojacar’s medical team in the peak summer holiday months is a very high priority for the health centre staff, and next summer the additional service will be extended from June to September.

The council pointed out the mayor has plans, which she regards as a matter of urgency, to begin the necessary procedures for the construction of a new medical centre that will expand and complement the town’s healthcare provision, as well as improvements to both centres currently servicing the town.

Tree chopper tracked down ADDING a natural woodland feature to wedding decorations in Vera has landed a company manager in trouble with the law.

The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation into the 41-yearold boss of a wedding floral decoration business on suspicion of stealing council-owned trees from Benahadux to incorporate as part of the design for a nuptials celebration in a Vera restaurant.

The move followed a notification from Benahadux Local Police that the local authority’s Environment department had reported the disappearance of three Peruvian pepper trees valued at more than €1,000.

Drives around the surrounding area over several days eventually

led to the location of the company’s vehicle near to a zone of industrial estates and to finding company employees nearby.

Investigating officers established that the company was in the middle of organising the decorations for the Vera event. Sure enough when they went to check out the venue there were the missing trees.

Young musicians

YOUNG PIANISTS: The youngsters performed pieces by some of the great composers, including Beethoven and Menke.

STUDENTS from the Mojacar Municipal Music School gave an impressive performance for this year’s traditional piano concert in honour of Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music.

Taking advantage of the good weather, the event was staged at midday in Mojacar village’s Plaza del Parterre below the walls of the church.

The youngsters performed pieces by some of the great composers, including Beethoven and Menke. The students chose the pieces them-

selves under the guidance of their teacher, Yolanda Parra Niederhauser. The young pianists also performed lighter works, among them the themes from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Beauty and the Beast and Over the Rainbow.

The Saint Cecilia concert is just one of the public performances given by music school students over the year. The next will be a concert with all the younger students accompanied by a guitar ensemble and an instrumental group on December 19 at 6.30pm in the school auditorium.

Jail for killing girlfriend THE Almeria Provincial Court jailed a man for 15 years and three months after a jury found him guilty of homicide by negligence for the death of his girlfriend at their Albox home in March 2018.

MP, aged 39, was also found guilty of gender-based violence.

According to reports, MP punched his partner in the face in the apartment bathroom which caused her to smash the back of her head against a cabinet.

In the verdict the jury recognised the seriousness of the blows and the victim’s bad state of health due to poor diet and a chronic alcohol addiction.

The defendant didn’t call emergency services for between six and eight hours.

The victim was found to have died as a consequence of a head injury, aggravated by her poor health. The jury also conclude that the injury may not have proved fatal if emergency services had been called earlier.

In fact, the jury determined the victim had died before the defendant moved her to the sitting room, where he covered her with a blanket and called for help.

The court also sentenced the attacker to five years on parole when he gets out and the payment of €135,000 compensation to the victim’s 14-year-old daughter.

Rail sales RAIL tickets are set to go on sale in Costa Almeria post offices.

Rail operator Renfe and the Post Office have reached an agreement under which tickets for medium and long-distance services will be able to be sold in any of the 2,400 multi-service offices distributed around the country.

In the case of Almeria, 28 post office branches located in areas where there are no stations to buy tickets from are able to offer the ticket sales: Nijar, Campohermoso, Carboneras, Tabernas, Sorbas, La Mojonera, Alhama de Almeria, Canjayar, Gergal, Huercal-Overa, Cuevas de Almanzora, Vera, Garrucha, Mojacar Playa, El Ejido, Santa Maria del Aguila, Aguadulce, Vicar, Roquetas de Mar, Dalias, Berja, Adra, Albox, Velez Rubio, Cantoria, Olula del Rio, Macael and Tijola.

The agreement, which marks a new stage in the relationship between the two public companies, gives the Post Office the opportunity to continue implementing a strategy of diversification in its activities.

For Renfe, the agreement is aimed at improving its public service offer.

At national level, 1,297 of the post offices in which rail tickets will be available are in rural or low density population areas, covering a total population of more than 15 million people.

Park for bookworms A NEWLY inaugurated park in Adra offers local residents both leisure time activities and culture.

The Parque del Cercado has been fitted out with a range of sport and play facilities and garden areas, but also an open-air library.

The library stock comes from a ‘Donate a book and take away a present’ campaign.

The council said it hopes the initiative will encourage reading and so-called ‘bookcrossing,’ the idea of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.

Outlining good practice for library users the council explained the first step is to select the chosen read or reads from the shelves. The books can be read in the park or taken home, then once read, returned to the park for another person’s enjoyment, along with any other book donations.

The library sign encourages bookworms, stating, “To read is to learn, dream, enjoy yourself, open your mind to the world, access in-

As well as the library the park boasts a children’s play area, a CrossFit zone and a snack area. Efforts have also been made to respect the environment, with sus-

tainable gardens and LED lighting.

The €106,000 park improvements came under the local council’s Adra Ciudad 2020 strategy, and were 80 per cent financed by European Regional Development Funds and 20 per cent by the council.

Sad farewell to David the Dogman Costa del Sol dog legend and much-loved member of the Euro Weekly team, David the Dogman, sadly passed away last Friday, after a lengthy illness.

David boasted an avid fan base as an EWN columnist, sharing a lifetime of experience in the dog training industry.

ORIGINALLY from Nottingham, he was an acknowledged leading behav­ iourist and people canine educator.

An Honorary Life Member of the British Police Services Canine Associa­ tion, he was the administrator for the Association’s Forum.

“Dogs have always been my life,” he once confessed.

David started his career in Israel in 1953, with the Israeli Border Police K9 Section. He was involved in all forms of dog training, including air­sea res­ cue, air scent work, and drug and ex­ plosives detection. When he returned to England, he joined the family busi­ ness.

The name ‘dogman’ comes from the police as they always say: “Get the dogman,” David revealed during an interview. “That’s how the name de­ veloped.”

At 48, he retired to Spain and with the support of his devoted wife, Susan, dedicat­ ed his full attention to the second love of his life, dogs.

The Dogman used all his experience and invented the silent dog training system that centres on what he called ‘silent socialisation.’

His unique style carried an effective, time­tested approach. “It takes 10 min­ utes to have any dog un­ der my complete control, and this includes showing its owner how to handle it.”

David emphasised that the biggest difference be­ tween his style and those used by others was his passive approach.

And in December 1973 he was presented with an illuminated Scroll by Commander Sir Philip Franklin Lord Lieutentant Of Nottinghamshire on behalf of the people of Nottingham and

Nottinghamshire.

Four years later, David founded The Nottinghamshire Hospice, after being approached by medical members of a Freemasons Masonic Lodge to head a group to establish a cancer hospice in Nottingham.

He later became founder of a Ma­ sonic Lodge in Spain having been in­ volved in Freemasonary in London and Nottingham for over 40 years.

He also helped form an action group to help retired people on the Costa del Sol who had been ripped off by con­men purporting to be licensed Financial Advisors.

Sports stadium shines in new light THE Miramar sports stadium in Adra is shining in a new light.

Loan formalised HUERCAL-OVERA Council has formalised a €1.2 million bank loan to help pay for municipal investments.

Of the total amount, €560,000 has been earmarked for completing the construction of the music school.

A further €302,500 will be for the municipal contribution to the provincial government’s project to update the water supply network, mainly in the Calvario district.

“The budget approved by the PP in February this year contemplated this formula of financing to deal with these investments, and in the exercise of responsibility the current government team takes on the commitments initiated by the previous administration,” Huercal-Overa mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez commented.

R&D funding boost PUBLIC and private investigation bodies and the University of Almeria are set to benefit from more than €2.3 million in Andalucia government funding for research and development in the province.

The financing corresponds to three periods for applying for funds in the 2017 and 2018 financial years, which the Junta de Andalucia has reactivated.

The three lines of subsidies are orientated to financing the transfer of knowledge between universities and public investigative organisms and the regional pro-

located just short of €510,000 to the University of Almeria. Of this, €148,784 corresponds to the transfer of knowledge and €363,385 to infrastructure.

In addition, the CEIA3 AgroFood International Excellence Campus, in which the university participates, will receive €127,574.

Also in the public sector, among the dozen regional institutes dependent on the CSIC Upper Council of Scientific Investigations, Almeria’s EEZA Arid Zones Experimental Station is due to get nearly €86,000.

The Hispano German Astronomical Centre at the Calar Alto Observatory has been allocated slightly over €176,000 to upgrade investigation infrastructure.

In the private sector, the Tecnova Agriculture Auxiliary Industry Technological Centre gets a €1.2 million share of the funding pie. The COEXPHAL Almeria Fruit and Vegetable Producers Organisations Associations gets nearly €312,000 in assistance.

The Junta research and development funding adds up to more than €37 million for the whole of Andalucia, benefiting around 50 public and private entities in all.

In terms of infrastructure the subsidies have been allocated for expenses including the acquisition of IT equipment and software and advanced scientific and technological instruments.

Where funding for the transfer of knowledge is concerned, the idea is that universities and public investigation organisms can benefit Andalucia’s productive sector. Among the kind of projects the Junta supports are those aimed at developing protoypes, testing, promoting and marketing technology, protecting intellectual property and market studies to identify potential business partners.

There are also incentives for developing relationships between investigation groups and companies and for organising and taking part in congresses, fairs and specialist forums.

Euro Weekly News joins Dames in Spain to get Costa Almeria Festive Season off to a fundraising start in Mojacar The Dames in Spain (Mojacar) got the Costa Almeria Festive Season off to a fantastic start with its grand fundraising Christmas bazaar, and the Euro Weekly News was there to join in the fun.

SATURDAY morning’s event at Mojacar’s multi-uses centre was packed with a mixed nationality crowd.

The local council provided the venue and gave its full support to the bazaar. Mojacar mayor Rosmari Cano was among those enjoying the atmosphere and browsing the stalls laden with home-made cakes, Christmas gift ideas, mulled wine and mince pies.

“Every year this is the start of Christmas for us”, Rosmari told EWN. “We’re delighted to be supporting the event with the British community again, and above all else, collaborating with all the causes which have stalls here. It’s a pleasure to be here once more.”

The Christmassy music was one of the top attractions. A rousing performance by the Mojacar band was followed by a medley of well-loved carols belted out by Tony Justice and Lady Ellen.

Bazaar-goers, the EWN team among them, proved they were in fine voice, joining in with the sing-along with enormous enthusiasm.

EWN was the proud official media sponsor for the event and contributed this year’s top prize for the grand raffle, a fabulous Smart TV. Tickets sold like the proverbial hot cakes.

The lucky lady taking home the TVE was long-time Mojacar resident Maureen Tew. The most moving part of the morning was the presentation of cheques for €1,000 each to the Dames’ chosen charities this year: the MACS cancer association, the Asprodalba association for the intellectually disabled and the Stepping Stones carers group.

Speaking to EWN, MACS’ Dave Brown praised the Dames in Spain for the amount the group contributes to the cancer charity every year.

“The money is always put to good use as most people know, and I can’t thank them enough, especially the Chairman Carol Threlfall and all the committee members.

They do us proud,” Dave said.

Dames Chairman Carol was full of praise for all the committee members who worked so hard to make this year’s bazaar such a success and raise a grand total of €2,528.

“I think it went brilliantly”, she told EWN. “I’m really happy with our committee: they’ve done a mega job.

UNICEF distinction for Cuevas schools SCHOOLS in Cuevas del Almanzora and Palomares have gained United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) recognition.

UNICEF has recognised the Luis Siret infants’ school in Cuevas and the Palomares infants’ school as Reference Centres in the Education on the Rights of Childhood and Global Citizenship in what was the third set of announcements of the distinctions.

The two schools are the only education centres in Almeria Province to have the recognition.

According to Cuevas Council the two schools

have started on an educational transformation orientated to childhood rights.

Both centres have “taken the first necessary steps for integrating the rights of childhood in the planning and in the school day,” the local authority said.

“UNICEF has recognised the work we are doing in our infants’ schools, which are very committed to childhood rights,” commented Cuevas Education councillor Ana Maria Castro.

“We are very pleased with these distinctions and the council wants to congratulate both centres.”

Set on a Mississippi showboat in 1887, the play was written by local author and Indalo Players member Bill White, who also

penned The Speakeasy Murder.

The amateur theatre group performed The Mississippi Murder for two nights to capacity audiences in Mojacar Playa and in Los Gallardos, and have been invited back to perform it again at both

venues. The Players also have plans to perform The Mississippi Murder at other venues in Mojacar, Vera and Bedar. Pictured here is a desperate moment from the play, but in their usual inimitable way the Indalo provides lots of laughs along the way.

Anglican Church diary dates THE Costa Almeria and Costa Calida Anglican Church is holding a series of services and carol singing gatherings in December.

On Monday December 2 there is a joint carol service in Mojacar Pueblo at 8pm. There will be more carols in the plaza in Antas on Friday December 13 at a time still to be confirmed, and the following morning on Saturday December 14 the carols will be in Mojacar Playa’s Parque Comercial.

The next day on Sunday December 15 there will be the Llanos Christmas event service and the Mojacar Eucharist service at 11am.

The carol singing moves to the Renfe building in La Alfoquia on Friday December 20 at 6pm, and on the evening of Sunday December 22 to Cantoria, again at 6pm.

There will be Christmas Eve Eucharist services in Llanos at 8pm and in Mojacar at 11pm. There is then a Christmas Day Eucharist service at 11am. The Anglican Church issued a big thank you to all the stallholders at its November Christmas fayre, members of the public who supported the event and to all the businesses who supplied raffle prizes, who together helped raise €4,107.88, and said it was delighted.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

In Spain there are in effect two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws.

Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime took place.

National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc.

Throughput Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112.

The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 - health emergencies 080 - firefighters.

By calling 902 102 112, but only when the perpetrator is unknown, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English from 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and from 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian.

Having given details of the crime, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 at the time for police attendance, or go directly to the police station which covers that area to make a report.

A DUTCH visitor had a surprise when she touched down at Alicante-Elche airport last week as she was declared the 14th million passenger to be welcomed this year.

The record milestone was marked by director of the airport Laura Navarro and representatives of airport operator Aena greeting her as she disembarked from a Transavia Boeing 737-800 arriving from Eindhoven. She was presented with several gifts including a pass for the airport’s VIP lounge.

The 14 million figure means that the airport has already broken its historic record for number of passengers handled in a year, surpassing 2018’s total of 13.981 million, which was up 2.1 per cent on the previous year.

During the current fiscal year 2019 Alicante airport saw an 8 per cent increase in passenger numbers during the summer months as the tourism economy saw an upturn. For the current winter season, which started on Sunday, October 27, and ends on March 28, Alicante-Elche Airport has 149 direct routes to 23 countries.

THE mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, has announced five new ‘megabuses’ will soon be in circulation. With an investment of €1.7 million, the town hall continues the renewal process of the EMT bus fleet.

In the last three years, a total of 58 new buses have been incorporated, some electric-hybrids and others articulated megabuses. With the recent acquisitions, the total amount invested in improving public transport has ascended to €18 million.

The buses are made by the brand MAN, with bodywork made by Spanish company Castrosua. They are 18.75 metres long, 5 per cent larger than the standard articulated buses, which contributes to improving comfort for travellers.

Each bus can carry 150 passengers and they will be assigned to lines 3, 11 and 15. Regarding seats reserved for people with reduced mobility, the vehicles have a total of five seats. They also have one extra row of seats, becoming the most comfortable model in the entire intercity fleet. They have photovoltaic panels on the roof, a defibrillator onboard and led lighting with low electricity consumption.

Keep on dancing MOTRIL Council have announced that they will open a dance hall for senior citizens to enjoy next year.

Taking advantage of her visit to the Autumn Festival on N ovember 22, Mayor Luisa García Chamorro revealed the news to 250 attendees.

Chamorro stated that the council will provide a space for senior residents that will be easily accessible, after the Council received several requests from members of the community.

Chamorro expressed her satisfaction to give back to elders in the municipality and that the council “works to serve them, as they have already given so many years of their life to making Motril the town that it is,” adding that “they deserve the best.”

The new dance hall has already been included in next year’s budget and the council will be responsible for organising its programme of activities.

THE Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition, Mireia Mollà, has given Denia and Benidorm the ‘Green Flags’ award. The award, promoted by Ecovidrio, recognises the commitment of coastal towns with the recycling of glass containers during the summer campaign.

Mollà has praised the results of the last campaign ‘Green Flags Movement,’ which managed to recover 15,960 tons of glass in 41 locations, 6.6 per cent more than the previous year. This increase in the recycling rate translates into 9,257 tons less of CO2 in emissions and an energy saving of 11,399 Mwh. Ecovidrio has also recognised other towns in the region such as Xàbia and Calpe, as well as the rest of the community.

The Minister was quoted as saying “Today the greatest recognition is not the prize, but the joint achievement of increasing the recycling of glass.”

Adra’s new-look park THE mayor of Adra officially opened the Parque Europa in the La Curva neighbourhood following €117,000 worth of updates and improvements.

Manuel Cortes talked about the “impressive” transformation of the 3,600sqm area, which he stressed was for all municipal residents to make use of “to practice open-air sport, rest or simply have fun.”

The mayor said the park works were part of the council’s plans to encourage local people of all ages to do physical activity and enjoy outdoor spaces.

Cortes also called on local residents to look after the park.

The park now offers different leisure and relaxation areas aimed at both adults and children, including individuals with restricted mobility. Among the new facilities the area boasts are a children’s play area with an EU theme, a snack zone, a sports court with a basketball net, open-air exercise machines and a ‘cross riders’ circuit.

The Parque Europa is one of five public spaces in the municipality being given a facelift thanks the Adra Town 2020 Plan and an investment of €545,000, which is 80 per cent financed by the European Regional Development Fund and 20 per cent by the local council.

AN agreement has been made between EMT Palma and the workers’ union to call off the transport strike which was scheduled to begin during the Christmas holidays.

Mateu Marcús, the manager of EMT, explained that an agreement between both parties has established improvements to the transport service so that drivers can take advantage of much needed time off. The union’s request for 140 new drivers will be clarified at a later date.

Francesc Dalmau, the councillor of Sustainable Mobility, expressed his satisfaction for the agreement and has reiterated that “the council will modernise EMT over the next four years.”

A strike was announced earlier this month in response to the “excessive exploitation and intolerable anxiety” suffered by workers, with the union indicating that there would be multiple 24-hour work stoppages in December and an indefinite strike from January of next year.

Green funding

THE European Investment Bank (EIB) has offered what is known as a green loan of €50 million to a consortium made up of Spanish electric utility company Iberdrola and Caja Rural de Navarra.

The money is intended to fi­ nance the building of four new windfarms in Navarra which will be built between Cadreita and Valtierra.

The work should see the employment of around 200 people and be completed in the first quarter of 2020 as part of an ongoing EU plan to increase renewable energy.

down, the process of manufacture produces a higher concentration of toxic chemicals and they take up more space for transport In actual fact, you need to use a paper bag three times to reduce the effect on the environment and this is far less likely as bags split or become wet.

Another factor is cost, as the su­ permarkets are encouraged to charge more for their bags, it is as­ sumed that profits will go to charity but this is not mandatory and they decide what the ‘profit’ amount is.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they buy derelict house?

We have had our property in Torrevieja for 30 years. The house next door has been emp­ ty for 20 years since the owner passed away and is now derelict. We have had squatters and oth­ er problems. When the last squatters left we paid to have it bricked up and put a new door on the roof.

The house was left to five grandchildren who are not interested and have never visited. We have tried for 20 years to buy the house, but we get no proper re­ sponse. There is about €10,000 debt on the property.

Netflix nasty AN apparently new scam has ap­ peared in the UK which could spread here into Spain concerning Netflix and hijacking of customer informa­ tion.

A number of former subscribers to that platform have complained that once they have cancelled their subscriptions hackers have stolen their information to renew their ac­ counts (often upgrading them) using their details but with brand new lo­ gins.

The scammers then sell the login details to others users at discounted prices and the old customers sud­ denly find themselves being charged on a monthly basis.

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.86 to £0.85 EUR/USD: Down from $1.11 to $1.10 The euro closed October on a high as Brexit optimism and widespread USD weakness helped to buoy the single currency.

However the euro has struggled to hold its ground so far in Novem­ ber as the increasingly fragile out­ look for the Eurozone takes its toll on the single currency.

The bloc’s industrial sector contin­ ues to be a sore spot for EUR in­ vestors, with a slowdown in manu­ facturing starting to spread to other sectors.

It’s not all been doom and gloom however, with the news that Ger­ many unexpected avoided a reces­ sion in Q3 offering some consolida­ tion for the single currency.

Currency outlook: Brexit headlines and election speculation keeps GBP investors on their toes

TAKING ITS TOLL: The euro has struggled to hold its ground. this month if Eurozone data contin­ ues to underwhelm.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.15 to €1.17 GBP/USD: Up from $1.28 to $1.29 The pound fluctuated over the past month, amidst a flurry of Brexit and political developments.

In terms of Brexit there has been

plenty to keep GBP investors busy after Boris Johnson surprised every­ one by securing a new withdrawal deal, but subsequently failed to get this deal through parliament, result­ ing in the Brexit deadline being ex­ tended until January 31.

Domestic politics proved to be equally tumultuous, with Sterling

being infused with further volatility as a snap election was called.

So far in November we have also seen the pound face some head­ winds after two members of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee shocked markets by vot­ ing for an immediate rate cut.

Looking ahead, the pound will grow increasingly sensitive to UK po­ litical headlines in the build up to the election on December 12.

GBP investors generally favour a Conservative victory on hopes that a majority will help Johnson break the Brexit deadlock in parliament, so ex­ pect to see Sterling remain support­ ed so long as the Tories continue to poll well.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.78 to £0.77 USD/EUR: Steady at €0.90 The US dollar traded in a wide range over the past four weeks A persistent selling bias hung over

the ‘greenback’ through the last half of October as a risk­on mood and Federal Reserve rate speculation both limited the appeal of USD. However the US dollar’s fortunes improved in November, rallying hard through the first half of the month.

This has been partly due to risk sentiment souring again amidst re­ newed US­China trade uncertainty.

Some surprisingly resilient domes­ tic data and indications that interest rates are likely to remain on hold for some time also lent the US dollar support.

Looking forward, the US dollar is likely to maintain its upwards mo­ mentum as global risks continue to build.

On the other hand domestic poli­ tics could weigh on USD in the com­ ing weeks depending on how Don­ ald Trump’s impeachment inquiry plays out.

Oddly I was going to write that it probably wouldn’t be long before the snowflakes began to crawl out bleating that he shouldn’t have been shot. Lo and behold the first to pop up was Cor­ byn. This man, who has no shame at all in his quest to appease just about any­ one whose votes may help his party, im­ mediately released a statement con­ demning the ‘shoot to kill’ policy.

‘fair play,’ they interpret this as weak­ ness. Watch my lips. They hate us. They want to wipe us all out. They are our en­ emy in a war that, if we don’t come to our senses, they have a very good chance of winning. All of them should be either deported along with their whole families, or locked up and have the key thrown away. As for our pathetic, utterly out of touch parole boards, although they claim to have had nothing to do with this fanatic’s release, they still have plenty to answer for. Most are made up of tin pot magistrates or tweedy local council members.

These prisoners eat them alive. They have hours and hours banged up in cells, rehearsing the lines they’re going to give these naïve egotists when their hearings come up. Relying on these overpaid in­ competents to decide whether to allow fanatical homicidal maniacs back onto the streets is bordering on pure insanity.

For heaven’s sake get a grip before we all go under.

I am still ‘in the system’ MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I WAS 70 this year so my English dri­ ving licence ran out. I decided I’d kill two birds with one stone and get a Spanish one which I applied for. First­ ly I had to take a test.

Well it’s not really a test as such ­ it’s a bit weird. I had to go to a clinic and play some kind of 1980’s video game which somehow I passed. I then had to go and have my eyes tested. I don’t wear glasses even for reading.

The optician, I’m guessing they were an optician, put me in a room, turned the lights off and told me to put my hand over one eye and read the board which was about two miles away. It wasn’t really but it might as well have been because I couldn’t read it that well. I pointed out I don’t usually drive with one hand over my eye in the dark. I was informed I had passed, but would need to wear glasses and it would be put on my licence and if I didn’t have them in the car I’d get

f i n e d . S o I we nt t o a not he r opt i ci a n and got two pairs of glasses ­ one for day and one for night. Simple eh?

Of course not! These glasses were for distance so when I looked in my rear view mirror or at the dashboard it was blurred. So, I then had to have them made into bifocals. I’m now the proud owner of two pairs of glasses that don’t seem to make any difference.

By the way, this was back in May. My birthday was in July so I reckoned I had given myself plenty of time to get my new licence. I went to a company that sends all the paperwork off to Trafico for you and that’s it ­ job done.

They take your UK licence and give you a piece of paper which allows you to drive in Spain, but not anywhere else. So here’s the problem. It’s now December and I still don’t have my li­ cence. I am ‘in the system’ and we all know that means I’m stuffed ‘til some­ one decides that my application gets attended to. I called the gestor that sent it for me and told them that I had friends that had applied after me who had got theirs back already.

They said it was all to do with Brexit of course! Anyone got any idea how I can speed things up?

GOOD MORNING, class. No talking at the back, please. I’d like to begin with another few moans.

I did a straw poll among my friends (only the finest of scientific and journal­ istic methods for this column, folks) about their biggest gripes. Top of the list came those rich individuals who like to lecture those less well off on every subject under the sun, but have skins like rhinos when it comes to their own actions.

One of their favourite subjects is cli­ mate change. Take Bono, Sting etc (and yes, you too, Greta von Waffles!) who zoom around the world with masses of aides but never tire of telling the rest of us to drive electric cars while wearing vegan shoes. They’re also associated with some of the biggest tax avoidance schemes, and include rabid socialists who send their kids to posh and pricey fee­paying schools. The list is endless.

This I learnt from my mother. Many people, especially men, keep a few banknotes inside their socks. It’s enough to get you home in an emergency. And I hate walking with friends who flaunt flashy designer bags or watches worth thousands of pounds. Status symbols often attract the wrong kind of attention at night.

Parrot lover DEAR Letters, I was horrified and saddened to hear about the shooting of the Argen­ tinian parrots to decrease their popu­ lation. Surely something else can be done. I am sure we would be up in arms if they started shooting people in overcrowded countries just to keep the numbers down.

Has nobody considered a bird sanc­ tuary or something less drastic? I mean who are they harming? They look beautiful and I suppose are a bit of a tourist attraction. I am glad that they are looking at more humane ways to limit numbers. It would be great to see an update on the progress of the experiment to remove the eggs to see if it works better.

They should hold off on the murdering until they have explored all other op­ tions and have some answers.

Break the silence #ME TOO might seem like a new movement in the way that it has been brought to the forefront of the media’s attention. With high profile alleged culprits like Weinstein, Polanski, R Kelly and most recently Prince Andrew, it became ‘fresh’ news when actress Alyssa Milano helped kick off the current phase of the movement two years ago, she wanted to ‘give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.’

However, activist Tarana Burke started the #MeToo campaign more than 10 years ago, her goal was ‘to spread a message for survivors: You’re heard, you’re understood.’

As they both made clear, #MeToo has always been about raising awareness of the impact of sexual violence. It’s also about creating change by empowering women through empathy and strength in numbers and visibly demonstrating how many women have survived sexual assault and harassment, particularly in the workplace.

Milano states that a priority for the movement is changing laws surrounding sexual harassment and assault, for example creating protocols that give victims in all industries the ability to file complaints without fear of reprisal.

It has been suggested that barriers to employment must be removed, such as the job requirement by some employers to sign non-disclosure agreements or other agreements that prevent an employee from talking about their employment publicly and legislation should be passed that bans these types of mandatory pre-employment terms.

The movement has done a great job in highlighting this cause but by drawing it into the public eye has it also allowed once respected figures to be tried by the media?

Gender violence HELLO EWN, I find it very admirable that your paper in print and online has had such good coverage of stories sur­ rounding gender violence. It does shock me that there are SO many cases here, dare I ask if it is part of the culture? I hope not.

However, I do notice that most re­ ported on are male against female violence and as a male victim of fe­ male violence in the past, I won­ dered if there are fewer cases of that in Spain or if it is something that is not talked about due to male pride.

I also attended the Solidarity Race in Fuengirola and was blown away by the number of children in atten­ dance. Let’s hope that it is a good sign and we are teaching our chil­ dren from a young age that violence is unacceptable whether it is against men or women.

A new drug being developed at UConn Health consists of a

blocking protein that edits DNA and stops the cancer from spreading. It stopped the spread­ ing process, called metastasis, in

animals and petri dish tumours.

Triple negative breast cancer is the most aggressive form of the disease and has the highest

risks for spreading and proving fatal within five years.

A drug that targets defects in genes is already used to treat muscular atrophy in children.

The FDA approved the treat­ ment in 2016 and scientists at UConn say their findings could mean the expensive drug could be repurposed to treat cancer.

Around 10 to 20 per cent of women with breast cancer are diagnosed with the triple nega­ tive form. This subtype doesn’t respond to standard treatments due to a molecular difference in the tumour. Chemotherapy is ef­

fective, but on most occasions the cancer comes back.

The uncontrollable growth of tumours involves splicing factors, that are able to edit specific genes in the cells. They ‘cut’ some of the information out and replace it with faulty DNA. The team in Connecticut focused on the splicing factors, targeting the bad editor that causes tumorous cells to grow. They found one, TRA2B, that was especially dense and practised blocking the defec­ tive splicing factor.

Blocking TRA2B prevented the breast cancer from spreading in animals. Currently, there isn’t a drug for use on humans, but doctors can use the model for developing a treatment faster.

Although one pound isn’t much, nutrition­ ists say that often people don’t lose the weight afterwards. To avoid overindulging, it’s good to be aware of what a healthy portion looks like. Based on your personal nutritional needs, calculate the ideal amount of food. The NHS has their own online calorie checker for over 150,000 types of food and drinks.

For popular food choices there are also healthier options. Roasted turkey is healthy, but deep­frying will add more fat. For stuffing, add more vegetables and go lighter on the bread. Adding carrots and celery to your pota­ toes will lighten your mash, as well as using low­fat milk. Remember to stop eating once satisfied, watch alcohol intake, use smaller plates and eat healthier appetizers.

But above all, Christmas is a time to enjoy with friends and family, so don’t be overly harsh with yourself. It’s how you eat on a regu­ lar basis that really matters.

Merry decorating MOST Christmas decorations are still packed up in boxes gathering dust in cupboards or lofts. But with December now here, it could be time to start getting inspired for the festive season.

Christmas bedroom décor has gained popularity, with all the interior magazines displaying their own take. Garlands draped across the headboard or drawers, even on ceiling lights, add a winter feel. Cosy throws and cushions in festive hues will also look cheery without being over the top. The idea is to bring a touch of Christmas without overpowering the restful space. Rustic woodland themes are also all the rage and bring the outdoors inside with tasteful decorations. It involves lots of ever­ green, pine cones and delicate string lights as well as animal prints and touches of bur­ gundy. This trend has more of a wintery feel and can be incorporated into the home without being full on. If you prefer a subtle Christmas, 2019 is the year of ‘fresh festivi­ ty.’ No bright colours or bold statements make this perfect if your home follows a neu­ tral pallet. It’s white and uncomplicated, with some foliage and understated decora­ tions. Touches of metallic decorations work perfectly with the crisp white and highlights of green. On the other side of the spectrum is a Kitsch Christmas, a full­on explosion of colour and glitter. There are no rules in this theme, just all the colours of the rainbow. Maximalism over minimalism is taking over with new fun interiors.

Turron is made with honey and almonds and can be hard or soft in texture.

WITH nearly nine million poinsettia plants ready to leave Spanish greenhouses, we take a look at the story of the Christmas flower that isn’t a flower at all.

The poinsettia plant rooted itself in Spanish culture 30 years ago and is one of the most popular Christmas decorations. With its winter flowering leaves in a deep red colour, the plant can be found in homes, offices and shopping centres all over the country.

This plant is the domesticated version of a wild tropical shrub that became pop­ ular in the US a century ago. All the plants sold in Spain come from mother plants grown in Africa: cuttings arrive by plane to Spanish nurseries. A quarter of all poinsettias are cultivated in Almería, where the warm winter allows them to be grown under plastic without the use of additional heating. Now, a wide variety of colours and shapes are hitting the expanding market. And gar­ dening experts hint they can last from one Christmas to another, you just have to know how to take care of them!

Spinach, chard and parmesan soup Makes 4 large servings I CAN hear some of you shouting at the page now! Where’s the meat this week? A bunch of veg isn’t lunch! Well, I guess there are some that won’t be convinced, but a bowl of this packs a punch that’s full of flavour and is surprisingly filling. It’s not even really a recipe, just a basic soup making technique that can be adapted in whatever way you like. Once again, I use a glass of alcohol (white wine this week) so my usual tip applies, get something nice so you can ‘relax’ with the excess.

Gently sweat two chopped medium onions (all the veg can be in large chunks as the soup will be blitzed at the end) in some butter and olive oil. After about five mins add a chopped leak and garlic. Af­ ter another 10 mins add one large peeled and chopped potato, a bunch of spinach and chard (acelga), add a large glass of white wine, season generously with salt and ground black pepper. Add a teaspoon of dried thyme. Let all the ingredients mingle and have a party for a couple of minutes then ladle in about 600ml of chicken stock (I added a couple of bay leaves to the stock). Put lid on and leave to sim­ mer away for about half an hour. Take a hand blender and blitz into a traditional soup consistency, add more stock if needed and pepper and thyme, serve with parmesan shavings.

Friends pitch in with Food Bank campaign THE Almanzora Group of Friends pitched in and did their bit to help with the ‘Grand Collection’ for the Food Bank.

The group had once again re-

sponded to the FESBAL Spanish Food Banks Federation’s call for volunteers to assist at the collection points, where the public donated non-perishable food and other items for associations and centres, food kitchens and

old age people’s homes.

Group members were on duty at Albox supermarkets on Friday November 22 and Saturday November 23, reporting an overwhelming response from residents of all nationalities.

Newsletter editor Sarah Makin was one of the group members taking part and getting customers to dig deep into their pockets and buy goods for the needy.

The Group of Friends joined members of the La Concepcion branch of Caritas, one of the associations involved in the distribution of the donations, who organised the volunteers and the rota.

5 - 11 December 2019 ALCONTAR was the location for the first Almanzora Valley Tourist Business Association and Montaña Meñas Club walk aimed at showing off the municipality’s attractions to hiking enthusiasts.

Some 80 walkers gathered on a chilly morning in the Plaza de Alcontar before setting out on the 12-kilometre, low-difficulty walk with club members at the front and the back and an assistance vehicle on hand.

It was uphill at the start, although not too steep a climb. After a couple of kilometres it was more gentle ups and downs.

The route took the walkers through the outlying district of Amarguilla, by several dry river courses and the river Sauco, before going up the mountain to a

THE new Polestar 1 is not a pure electric car but a plug­in petrol­electric hybrid linked to an eight­speed automatic gear­ box with manual override pad­ dles.

On looks alone it is eye­catch­ ing with a sophisticated sporty GT silhouette made possible by its carbon­fibre construction which has given designers more flexibility to create crisper, more elegant lines, allowing for a low­ er roofline and vast panoramic glass roof letting light flood in.

Hamilton wins the Abu Dhabi IT was never in doubt. Brit Lewis led every lap. Hamilton had done it ­ his 11th race win of 2019, with the drivers’ title already wrapped up. It was a phenome­ nal performance. Some py­ rotechnics fired up on the final straight as the celebrations of the season came to an end in Abu Dhabi.

Ken got to the final by winning a very close game against another Almeria Bowling player, Bryan Thompson.

In the other semi-final Paul Gunter played Brian Hallam from Almeria Bowlwing, who although played well but was unable to match Paul in the latter stages.

Almeria Bowling Club Captain Chris Brown had the honour of presenting the prizes and trophy to the finalists.

IT’S official, Lionel Messi is the winner of the 2019 Bal­ lon d’Or and makes history by becoming the first player ever to have won the trophy six times.
