BOOMING BREXIT WORRIES over Brexit and the collapse of Thomas Cook appear to have been unfounded when it comes to the Costa Blanca tourism sector. Up until the end of October the region welcomed six million tourists, an increase of 3.4 per cent over the same period of 2018. This is out of a total of 74.7 million international tourists visiting Spain, with once again the UK top of the league when it comes to spending - Brits accounted for 19.9 per cent of total expenditure or €16.379 billion in the first 10 months of the year. The importance of the British market to Spain and tourist hotspots like the Costa Blanca is shown by the fact that the second placed nation in terms of expenditure was France, whose citizens spent nearly €10 billion less than the British in Spain. than the national average in terms of a rise in numbers. Across the country as a whole the increase was just 1.1 per cent, although spending was up 2.9 per cent to €82.129 billion, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE). The Valencian Community as a whole received 8.5 million visitors in the period, 3.4 per cent up on 2018. According to a consumer
survey conducted by the consulting firm GFK amongst British tourists, 68 per cent of respondents think that Brexit has not had an impact on their decision to travel. On top of that 70 per cent think their financial situation is either the same or better than before the Brexit vote, auguring well for future bookings. Some 5 per cent of those surveyed have already bought Euros in case Sterling falls af-
ter Brexit, while 6 per cent have brought forward their travel plans. Just 2 per cent said they will holiday in the UK.
