‘VIVE LE’ALMERIA THE Eiffel Tower in Paris was the spectacular location for a major promotional event to highlight the attractions of the Costa de Almeria to the French tourist market.

A provincial government delegation made a presentation to some 100 French travel sector professionals in the iconic monument, Diputacion President Javier A Garcia telling them Almeria “is the only European continent destination where you can enjoy four seasons in just one day.”

The event, which was attended by dignitaries including Paris city councillors and the UNESCO ambassador, as well as journalists from Le Figaro, Le Parisien, Le Monde and France Television, marks what the Diputacion said is the beginning of a new stage in the relationship between Almeria and France.

“In the last eight years we have opened up the internation-

He continued, “Spain is the top international destination for the French market, and we are convinced that our province can be the preferred location where tourists will find the experiences they are looking for on their holidays.”

Earth moves THE earth had a rumble early on Saturday morning due to minor quakes registered in Tabernas and Vera.

The IGN National Geographical Institute reported an earth movement measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale with the epicentre in

Tabernas and felt in a number of municipalities, including Roquetas de mar, El Ejido, Nijar, Viator, Pechina and Huercal de Almería.

Just a couple of minutes later the earth had another little shake, this time a magnitud 1.7.

Recycling being promoted by glass STUNNING figures created from reused glass on show at various locations in Almeria City are helping to raise awareness about recycling.

The provincial capital is the final stop for the ‘Ecomeninas Andalucia Gallery’ travelling exhibition of statues of court ladies, an artistic initiative devised by the Ecovidrio company which collects and recycles glass in the city.

The figures themselves are based on the designs of artists and well-known people from different areas of Spanish society, among them designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada and bullfighter El Cordobes.

THE COEXPHAL Almeria fruit and vegetable producers’ association estimates the provincial sector suffered €4.7 in losses due to the Tsunami Democratic demonstrations on the AP-7 at La Junquera in Cataluña on the French border blocking the passage of lorries carrying some 5,000 tonnes of produce.

THE Junta de Andalucia and Almanzora Valley councils agreed to present a joint request to the Council of Ministers for the transferral of a cubic hectometer of water from the Negratin reservoir to prevent the shortage in supply threatening Albox and Olula del Rio municipalities.

34 TIME OUT 44-45 SPECTACULAR: San de Gaztelugatxe in the Basque Country.

CASTLE ROCK It’s hardly surprising this incredibly striking island of San de Gaztelugatxe was selected as a filming location for Game of Thrones.

LOCATED along the Bay of Biscay, 35km east from Bilbao, the island fortress - literally translated as castle rock (from Basque ‘gaztelu’ = castle + ‘aitz’ = rock) - was known as Dragonstone in season 7 of the BHO series.

The island is connected to the mainland by a man-made stone bridge which leads into a narrow path of 241 steps which weaves its way to the top where there is a church with a bell along the front of its façade.

According to legend, anybody who

climbs to the top should ring the bell three times and make a wish.

The church at the top is dedicated to John the Baptist, who is said to have set foot on the island. However, the small church is not original and has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, having burned down.

The first hermitage is believed to have been built here in the ninth century.

Having become a convent before being abandoned by the friars in the 14th century, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe had a strategic purpose as a de-

fensive outpost for the lords of Biscay.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe also played a small role during the Spanish Inquisition. Witches and their ritualistic meetings known as Akelarre in Basque make up a part of the Basque mythology.

The church deteriorated over time and it was eventually demolished in 1886 and rebuilt from scratch. Unfortunately, during the demolition process, all of the artifacts found in the ground, such as coins and cannon balls, were thrown into the sea.

Online rental fraud

Sexual aggression

A MAN passing himself off as an Almeria City estate agent is under arrest for conning at least 24 people in an online rental fraud.

Police said 39-year-old JJSC offered properties to let in the provincial capital on different websites, but it was all a scam. Would-be tenants signed contracts and handed over cash or made bank transfers of between €150 and €500 to secure the rentals, but never saw any of the supposedly available properties first-hand, much less move into them. To explain why he had not handed over the keys, the conman fobbed them off with excuses like the previous tenants had extended their contracts.

By the time the fraud victims realised they had been swindled it was too late to get their money back.

In all the fraudster got his hands on more than €9,700 since the first con in August 2015.

A 25-YEAR-OLD man is under arrest on sexual aggression charges following two incidents in Huercal-Overa.

The first victim was reportedly assaulted in a pub toilet, the attacker using considerable physical force, although her continuous screams made him flee.

The other victim said she was standing at a pub entrance when a man grabbed her arm and pulled her away from her friends, again applying physical force. Once more the victim’s cries raised the alarm and the man made off.

Guardia Civil officers launched a rapid and thorough investigation, piecing together the information provided by the victims and by witnesses and drawing the conclusion they were dealing with the same individual. Officers made the arrest on the same day the two attacks were reported.

The Guardia said it was possible the suspect had carried out attacks on other women.

ANTI-GENDER VIOLENCE FIGHT FIVE Almeria sports clubs have given their backing to government campaigns aimed at fighting gender-based violence and sexual aggression.

Representatives of the UD Almeria football side, Unicaja Almeria Volleyball, Almeria Rugby Union, Almeria Basketball Club and Mytos Judo Club visited the offices of the Government Sub-delegation in Almeria this week to show their support for three Secretary of State for Equality campaigns: ‘No es no. Respeta los límites, sí o sí’ (No is No. Respect Limits. Yes or Yes) against sexual violence; ‘Pasión no es posesion’ (Passion isn’t possession) aimed specifically at adolescents; and ‘No estoy sola’ (I am not alone), which is focused on gender violence and making victims aware of the available institutional resources which could help them out of this situation.

The main objective of the campaign focusing on the problem of sexual violence is to raise awareness and inform men about crossing the sexual aggression line and everyday attitudes and behaviour which can make sexual violence seem normal and consensual.

This is the Spanish government’s first campaign of this kind directed specifically at men, the Sub-delegation reported.

The campaign Passion isn’t possession initiative is all about making young people think about the importance of having intimate relations which promote freedom and full respect, the Sub-delegation explained. A rap-styled campaign ad identifies forms of violence which are unacceptable, but commonly tolerated in sentimental relationships.

The third campaign wants to send a message of support and confidence in the institutions to gender-violence victims, on the basis this is key to tackling the problem.

“Breaking the silence and ending the violent relationship, which at times can last eight years or more, ac-

cording to the figures from the Gender Violence Government Delegation, is only possible if there exists a professional specialist environment which can be trusted and IS absolutely safe for the women,” the Sub-delegation stressed.

The Sub-delegation also highlighted the fact this is the first campaign which puts the focus on the social and health institutions, with a view, the Sub-delegation said, to avoiding the message the legal route is the only way out of a violent situation. Speaking at the campaign presentation in the provincial capital, Government Sub-delegate Manuel de la Fuente stressed the battle against gender-

based violence was not an issue for just one government or political party, but “a matter which should concern all Spanish society and against which we should all struggle until its eradication and not allow not even one step backwards.”

There are currently 2,103 active cases of women in Almeria Province who are victims of gender violence and who are under the protection of the State. Since 2007, 13,188 women living in the province have made use of this protection on finding themselves in a violent situation.

Official figures also show that 35 women in Almeria have died at the hands of their partners or former partners since 2003. In addition, two children in Almeria have died as a result of gender violence since 2013 when records on this kind of violence began.

De la Fuente ended by thanking the sports clubs for their participation in promoting the three campaigns.

“We are very aware of the value of your collaboration and of the impact on a large public, and especially young people,” he commented.

Neighbourhood weed GUARDIA CIVIL seized more than 1,200 marihuana plants growing in the basements of five houses in Gador.

Operation ‘Alania Plus’ also resulted in the arrests of five people on charges of crimes against public health and electricity fraud The Guardia launched the operation after becoming aware of the existence of a series of houses in the same neighbourhood of the municipality dedicated to the indoor cultivation of marihuana.

Continuing with the investigations, the officers were able to verify that these houses gave off a characteristic smell of cannabis. Officers put a watch on the houses and called in the Endesa electricity company to check the power consumption.

Engineers were able to verify that the properties’ real electricity consumption was much higher than that shown on their meters and also higher than normal domestic consumption.

When officers raided the five houses they found a total of 1,252 marihuana plants in different phases of growth and flowering, 165 lamps, 24 air conditioning units, 15 extractors with filters, 13 fans, more than 350 empty flowerpots and two 25cm machetes, in addition to material for cultivation.

Police slam attack THE Almeria AUGC Guardia Civil union has slammed an attack on officers on duty at the weekend’s Cuevas del Almanzora fiesta celebrations.

Posting on social media, the Almeria branch of the union called for a “toughening up of sentences for this kind of behaviour.”

The union was referring to an incident in the early hours of Sunday morning. Officers from the Vera station suffered injuries, some requiring stitches, when they were physically assaulted while trying to break up a brawl.

One of the officers had his nose broken, according to Spanish press.

The AUGC put the situation down to “a lack of personnel and resources which the Guardia Civil have to work with.

“This lack of security and protection measures has consequences as we have seen with this incident, for those who look out for public safety,” the union stated.

The initiative, a collaboration with the Almeria

Asperger’s training ROQUETAS DE MAR Council, the Almeria Asperger’s Association and the Mapfre Foundation are collaborating on municipal ser vice workplace training practice for people with an intellectual disability.

The agreement comes under the foundation’s 'Juntos Somos Capaces' (Together We Can) programme, which has the specialist assistance of the Konecta Foundation.

Roquetas mayor Gabriel Amat highlighted how the “union of three institutions can mean lovely and important actions which can benefit everyone.”

He continued, “Our mission in the municipality is to give the best services and to help the people who need their town hall, and we are satisfied that participating in a programme like this allows us to go deeper in this mission.”

Mapfre Roquetas branch manager Rita Marcelino D’Acosta commented that the foundation is “committed to the integration of people with a disability and their integration into the labour market.”

Asperger’s Almeria director Amparo Garcia Escarabajal explained that about half a dozen young people will benefit from the collaboration.

She said the participants were looking forward to getting started on the training opportunity, and said the association hoped that “in the near future they will, being perfectly prepared, be immersed in the working world.

SNIFFED OUT: Guardia officers discovered the marihuana plants after noticing a strong smell of the drug coming from the property.

Alpujarras farmer found out for marihuana plantation AN Alpujarras farmer is under arrest after Guardia Civil found getting on for 2,000 marihuana plants growing on his property.

Guardia Civil detained the 53-year-old as part of an investigation into illegal marihuana production in the Illar area.

Officers searching the zone noticed a strong smell of marihuana coming from his property. A search revealed there was a 50sqm indoor plantation and a 3,000sqm greenhouse dedicated to growing the drug.

In all officers seized 1,890 plants, along with lamps, extractors, air-conditioning units and ventilators.

The detainee voluntarily handed over 400 grammes of marihuana buds prepared for drying which were inside the house.

Anti-gender violence events continue COUNCIL-BACKED events to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women continue in Huercal-Overa until the end of the month.

Secondary schoolchildren are this week taking part in the ‘Hablemos de Amor ’ (Let’s talk about love) workshops, which have a whole series of objectives: to look at the different ideals of love, the roles in sentimental relationships, gender-based violence and its manifestation on social media, how to identify gender violence and where victims can go to seek help.

The idea is also to stimulate debate among the participants so that they reflect on the kinds of relationships they ha ve a nd thos e of the pe ople the y know.

A further workshop for older children will examine the influence of new technology on sexuality.

On the actual Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, next Monday November 25, there will be a gathering in the Plaza de la Constitucion at 12 noon with the participation of a ll the munic ipa l s c hools a nd women’s associations.

Then on November 26 there will be the inauguration at the municipal library of an exhibition of anti-gender violence posters created by pupils as the Cura Valeria institute.

The month’s gender-based violence orientated activities will wind up on November 27 with the presentation of

HOMAGE TO EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS THE municipality marked the occasion with a dramatised tour around the town’s most important monuments organised by the council’s Culture department and the No eres de Vera si... residents’ association.

Local people in character as figures from the times narrated what happened on the night of November 9, 501 years ago and in the aftermath of the natural disaster. The Hospital Plaza, the Victoria Convent, the Fernando V Plaza and the Plaza Mayor were the scenes for the storytelling, poetry readings and performances.

Almeria provincial government president Javier A Garcia was among the dignitaries in Vera for the occasion. In his speech he recognised that the Vera municipal archive is “one of the most important in Andalucia, and thanks to this it has been possible to rescue the memory of what happened on November 9, 1518.”

VERA has paid homage to the 150 victims of the 1518 earthquake which destroyed the original town on the anniversary of the tragedy.

LOCAL HISTORY: Costumed characters narrated what happened on the fateful night of N ovember 9, 1518 before a minute’s silence in memory of the victims and a torch-lit procession to the Espiritu Santo hill (inset).

The Diputacion president also referred to “all the generations of Vera people who have been able to raise such a booming town for the province, as Vera is a leader in the Almeria Levante region creation of wealth and employment, and of which all Almerians feel proud.”

He ended by pledging his admin-

istration’s continued support “for the growth and development of the municipality.”

Vera mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge commented that the earthquake was the “undoubted starting point for building the lovely and advanced town which Vera has become today, being one of the main towns in the Levante region thanks

to the work and effort of all Vera people.”

The official acts concluded with a floral offering and a minute’s silence in front of the town hall in memory of the victims, the only sound Octavio Santos and Fran Martinez on the cello and keyboard playing ‘El canto de los pajaros.’

The most moving part of the commemorations however was the torch-lit procession by about 100 local residents to what is today known as the Espiritu Santo hill where the medieval town of Bayra once stood. They went all the way up to the Bayra museum esplanade where the local actor who took on the character Iñigo de Guevara, the town mayor in 1518, read out a manifesto and the light of the image of the Sacred Heart which today stands on top of the hill was turned off for a minute’s silence at exactly 11pm, the hour when according to accounts from the times the earthquake struck.

The 1518 earthquake was of such magnitude that the fortification which had stood at the top of the Espiritu Santo hill came crashing down on the houses and walls of Bayra. Those who survived went on to build the new town of Vera.

HUERCAL-OVERA Council has given its support to an Andalucia Autism Federation campaign to raise awareness about the condition.

Last week the local authority hosted the presentation of the ‘Una de Cada Cien’ (One in every 100) campaign aimed at making people more knowledgeable about the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Fernandez also revealed the council is now working on a project to adapt a municipal premises which it will hand over to ASTEA in order that they can continue with their work and develop the different programmes which the association puts into action.

At the same time, she said, the council would aim to make local authority-organised activities more inclusive so they include people with ASD. The ASTEA president expressed the association’s gratitude to the council for it support.

The campaign is already being promoted on Huercal-Overa municipal screens and on the council’s website.

A fine old station ALMERIA railway station has been ranked among the finest in Spain.

The magazine Cultura Inquieta put the city’s late 19th century train station in seventh place in a list of the most handsome stations in

the country, which is topped by a building in historic Toledo.

The magazine’s blurb about the provincial station points out that while the structure was constructed between 1890 and 1893 it did not start operating until 1895.

It also points out that the building features iron and glass, which was very typical of industrial architecture of the period.

In 2006 the building underwent a major reform, including the construction of a new annex.

MORE PLACES: The school now has capacity for 82 children.

School expansion plans THE Junta de Andalucia has given the goahead to the expansion of the La Pernera infants’ school in Antas.

The regional government published the official authorisation order for the modification of the school’s number of units and pupil places in its official bulletin.

Posting on its Facebook page, Antas Council said it was “pleased” to announce the school was opening a new classroom for the tiniest tots aged up to one year, increasing the number of places from 74 to 82, thanks to the authorisation from the Junta’s Education regional delegation.

The local authority also announced that the second se-

lection procedure for admission of babies of this age is now open, and that more information is available from the school’s management.

La Pernera, which opened its doors in 2009, is run by the FAAM Almeria Federation of Associations for People with a Disability. It takes children up to three years old.

ROSIE LEES cafe-bar and teashop in Turre is officially celebrating.

Not only was this popular British-run establishment invited to participate in the Turre ‘Camino de la Tapa,’ it also won an award.

Tapas are not traditionally British, but expats living and running businesses in Spain “get to sample the best of both cultures and mix things up a bit in the process,” says Rosie Lees’ owner Jemma Wilson.

Rosie Lees was lucky number eight on the passport of participating eateries and offered the sweet treat at the end of the trail: chocolate fudge cake with a cup of tea or coffee.

“Being part of this local event meant not only did we get to tantalise the taste buds of our regular customers, but we also got to entice more of our Spanish neighbours through our doors, and they liked it!,” Jemma told the Euro Weekly News.

So much so, that in the final vote count Rosie Lees came out top for having the

THE All Aloud community choir will be singing their hearts out for a special Christmas charity concert in Albox.

The performance of a variety of Christmas carols and traditional Christmas songs will be in aid of the Harmony charity and a local Spanish charity. The evening will also feature songs with which the audience can join in and sing along.

All Aloud are a group of local people who get together for two hours ever y Thursday afternoon at 3.30pm at Chapm a n ’s b a r i n A l b o x t o e n j o y a s o c i a l get-together and friendship through community singing. If you like singing in the shower or in the car then you qualify for All Aloud.

They don’t hold auditions: anyone is invited to go along and see if they like what they do, and people generally end up staying.

The choir sings a wide range of songs

to ensure that there is something for everyone. From pop to folk, musicals, Gilbert and Sullivan, reggae, spirituals and film music, the list is endless. If it can be sung, All Aloud give it a go!

Despite the choir’s amateur status they were encouraged to perform a charity concert during the summer, and encouraged by the success of the event they have decided to listen to the calls for another concert.

The Christmas charity concert will be staged at the La Parilla bar and restaurant in Albox on December 20, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets priced €5 are available from Cats in La Alfoquia, Sofia’s g y m a n d To t a l E n t e r t a i n m e n t i n A r b o l e a s a n d To t a l E n t e r t a i n m e n t a n d Scrumptious Cafe in Albox. All proceeds will go to the charities.

FOOD BANK: People are being encouraged to donate appropriate items.

Collection push THE provincial government has called on the public to do their bit and contribute to the ‘Grand Collection’ for the Food Bank.

The Diputacion de Almeria wants to see people donate appropriate food and other requested items at one of the 216 collaborating establishments distributed all over the province tomorrow Friday No-

vember 22 and Saturday November 23.

Speaking at the presentation of this year’s grand collection, Social Well-being deputy Angeles Martinez commented, “With entities like the Food Bank it is possible to treat a much greater part of society,” inviting all Almeria residents to “collaborate on this campaign which is still necessary.”

Last year, the Almeria Food

Bank centre distributed 3,248,534 kilos of items to more than 47,000 people in the province.

The 2018 Grand Collection campaign gathered more than 300,000 kilos of food and the hope is that this year total donations will be even higher.

The donations go to various associations and centres, food kitchens and old-age people’s homes.

GRATEFUL: The City Promotion councillor said the elaborate decorations were a way for the council to say thank you to residents for supporting the 2019 gastronomy capital initiative.

Christmas crowning ALMERIA Council has revealed there will be a Christmas crowning glory at the end of what has been a magical year for the city.

This year Almeria has been making the utmost of its status as national gastronomy capital, and the three 10-metre high crown installations made up of 155,000 lights, plus Christmassy music show, are seen as fitting Festive Season decorations.

The giant crowns will stand on the Mirador de la Rambla from December 5 to January 6.

City Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez said the elaborate decorations were a way for the council to thank all the city’s residents for their commitment to the gastronomy 2019 initiative, commenting, “I am sure they will be enjoyed as much by adults as children.”

The councillor also stressed the aim was to continue to promote the city as a foodie destination, and said that Christmas would mark the transition for the use of the new ‘Almeria, Gastronomy City’ logo from the beginning of 2020 onwards.

THE seventh Mojacar Half Marathon and the ‘Ciudad de Mojacar’ race proved to be a winning sporting occasion.

Organised by Mojacar Council’s Sport department and the Puerto Lumbreras’s Nogalte-Hogar Athletics Club, the sports fixture attracted 620 amateur and professional runners, 100 more than last year.

Participants in the half marathon covered 21,097 metres on three laps of the circuit prepared by the local authority, which went alongside the Paseo del Mediterraneo. The seven-kilometre Ciudad de Mojacar meant one lap, or 7,097 metres to be precise.

The virtually flat circuit also had skaters and Joellete chair athletes joining in on the scenic coastal route, which started and finished at the Best Oasis Tropical Hotel in Marina de la Torre.

Prizes went to the first three in all 10 of the half marathon male and female categories. There were also trophies for the first five local runners, a commemorative trophy for the oldest athlete to cross the line, as well as team trophies,

and awards also for each of the five categories in the seven-kilometre race.

Mojacar Sports councillor Ana Garcia Fernandez did the award presentation honours at the end of the events, which the council

reported went totally to plan and were incident-free.

In the home runners, first with an excellent time in the 21-kilometre was Ennio Constantino with Amalia Gonzalez fastest woman in the seven-kilometre.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es.

Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible.

If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org.

A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname.

The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person).

Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe.

After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate.

After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months.

The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross.

Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery.

Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million.

We could never forget EWN’s own Benidorm Really Has Talent, when amazing Kayleigh Taylor won the €2,000 prize and EWN raised €15,000 for cancer charity AECC. Guests were surprised with a performance from X Factor star Rowetta, who amazed everyone with her vocals Age Concern is a wonderful charity that provides help and friendship for the older English-speaking community on the Costa del Sol. We loved organising a fun-filled Garden Party at Sohail Castle in Fuengirola, where live entertainment with Rowetta and a delicious buffet was enjoyed by all. This year, our EWN team - led by director Steven Euesden joined the charity at the top of the iconic Sunset Beach Hotel in Benalmadena and bravely abseiled all the way down!

EWN has lent its support to MABS Cancer Support Group, backing their spring ball in April 2015, which raised €5,000.

And when EWN owners Michel and Steven Euesden held a 10-year wedding blessing, they shunned gifts in favour of

donations to Cudeca.

Each year, we support the Positively Pink Ball which annually raises tens of thousands of Euros for breast cancer screening. And last year, EWN was proud to get behind the second annual Oceana Grant A Wish Pink and Blue Ball which collected €16,000 for some exceptional causes.

Over the years, we have formed a close bond with the Leighton family as we worked together to raise money for the Tomas Leighton Care Charity. Lovely Tomas suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy and needs the community’s helping hand. He can always count on our support!

Always looking to give back to our readers, we dreamed up the fun idea of giving away a car! You heard right! In return, we wanted to know in what ways we could improve to better meet our readers’ needs. One lucky reader was gifted their very own €15,000 EWN car!

More police ORIHUELA is giving priority to recruiting more Local Police in its latest staff recruitment drive.

The councillor for Human Resources, Luisa Boné, reported that the process for recruiting 12 more officers has started.

José María Pomares, Chief of the Local Police said the force has been declining since 2013 and has a current strength of 126 officers. With the new recruitment drive, plus other personnel already in the pipeline, there will be 25 new officers bringing staffing to 151 officers, one more than in 2013.

Orihuela City Council has a total staff of 731 municipal employees, of which 269 are workers, 207 career civil servants and 255 interim civil servants.

This makes the percentage of interim officials around 55.19 per cent. It is the intention of the council, according to Boné, to reduce this by approximately 10 per cent during the term of the current government.

Charity walk raises handsome sum THE Animal Protection Society Albox charity walk raised over €500 for the charity.

The walkers and their dogs met at the Rosaleda Hotel in Arboleas and completed a five-kilometre circular walk on a scenic, but not overly taxing route led by David Ridyard. A water stop halfway provided a refreshing rest.

There were a huge variety of dogs, with some of the smallest having the biggest of personalities.

Event organiser Margaret Ridyard was delighted with the number of people who turned out to take part in the walk, despite the wind. She thanked all the volunteers who helped and all the participants, some of whom had raised large amounts through sponsorship.

Jack raised the most and walked proudly with his owner Maggie.

HOSPITAL Costa del Sol, in Marbella, recently held a class for patients with breast cancer in which a group of professionals and those who had already gone through the disease offered guidance and advice on how to deal with it.

The workshops will continue and aim to become an exchange of information and experiences between both groups, with the aim of improving the quality of life of those diagnosed with breast cancer.

Patients can establish an action plan to develop in their daily lives by addressing issues such as food, physical exercise, rest and what medication they can take during chemotherapy, all explained without technical jargon and in understandable language.

This initiative has taken place due to the success of previous classes held by the hospital for patients suffering from chronic obstructive disease, heart disease and anticoagulation.

FIVE of Axarquia’s major towns made the journey to London last week to take part in the 2019 World Trade Market.

The World Trade Market Exhibition is one of the most important trade shows in the world when it comes to tourism, and this year, the Costa del Sol turned out in force to represent the Malaga Province.

Nerja, Torrox, Frigiliana, Velez-Malaga and Rincon de la Victoria joined Antequera, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Benahavis and Manilva to take part in the show to promote the region’s unique tourism qualities.

Numerous companies and travel operators also attended to help reassure the British public that Andalucia is staying committed to UK tourists in the face of Brexit uncertainty.

Next day appointments for residency in Alicante City THE Spanish authorities have issued a reminder that it is possible to organise next day residency appointments in Alicante City via the Spanish government website.

In all 180 appointments are being opened up on a daily basis, and there is quite a lot of availability each day. Since appointments are opened up each day, if there are none left at the time of checking, it is worth bearing in mind there will be more the following day.

The appointments can also be used to apply for ‘caracter permanente’ for anyone who has been resident for more than five years.

Hence anyone who used to go to the main police stations in Orihuela, Torrevieja, Denia and Benidorm can now take advantage of this new resource in the provincial capital.

The instructions for booking an appointment on the website are straightforward enough.

Toys’R’Us bounces back THE friendly giraffe known as Geof­ frey will forever be associated with the Toys’R’Us business which went into terminal decline in the USA. Although the 16­foot statue of Dr G Raffe, as he was originally known, has moved to a children’s hospital in New Jersey, the Spanish arm of the business has made a remark­ able recovery.

It was purchased just over a year ago by a Portuguese investment fund and is now expecting to break even in 2019 with a turnover of €160 million.

Other ideas include the sharing of buildings in out of town locations which it owns but which are too large for the business and also a possible franchise arrangement with new independent companies.

Traditionally, it has always oper­ ated from large stores of up to 1,800 square metres, but it is also considering scaling new openings down to around 600 square metres full of the top selling toys.

Another string to its bow is the Babies’R’Us brand, which it plans to expand within the Iberian market.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he extend his stay?

I have what should be a simple question, but having trawled through dozens of websites and forums, consulted my lawyers, and talked to estate agents, I cannot get a straight answer. If I want to stay in Spain over the winter between 90 and 180 days (surely I am not the only one in this po­ sition), can I apply for an extension allowing me to stay for longer than 90 days without being compelled to apply for a residence permit?

Tax payers unhappy ACCORDING to the Partido Popu­ lar Financial Head of the Madrid Community, Javier Fernández­ Lasquetty, the election of a PSOE government could cost taxpayers in the area some €5.9 billion.

The policy put forward by act­ ing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez calls for a harmonisation of taxes across Spain in the event that he is returned with a working major­ ity.

Piggy Bank THE Spanish government has confirmed that it will take more than €3.5 billion from the Social Security reserve fund (the socalled government piggy bank), together with a loan in order to afford to pay the extra Christmas pension payment.

Shareholders lose action A DISSATISFIED group of 5,803 former Lloyds TSB shareholders have lost a multi­million­pound action against the bank over its purchase of HBOS in 2009.

They argued in court that the bank made the wrong move in taking over ri­ val HBOS as it was laden down with bad debts and unrecoverable mortgages.

In addition, they believed that infor­ mation concerning more than £35 bil­ lion (€38 billion) of emergency financial assistance from the Bank of England and Lloyds was withheld from share­ holders which led to the virtual t a k e o v e r o f L l o y d s b y t h e B r i t i s h g o v­ ernment.

Whilst Talk Talk has so far invest­ ed around £60 million (€69 million) in developing this project, other suppliers have also been putting money into their own alternatives and any new Labour government would have to negotiate with them all.

Although the ex-president was actually telling more porkies than Pinocchio, his statement that he ‘never had sexual intercourse with that woman’ did appear to be somewhat sincere and believable.

By contrast Prince Andrews’s televised attempt at damage limitation was an utter disaster. Would you ever consider buying a used car from this man?

Some of his denials were quite bizarre.

When asked about his young accuser’s accusa­ tions of him ‘sweating heavily’ he said that from his involvement in the Falkland’s war he had contract­ ed a condition that meant he didn’t sweat! I looked this up. This malady is known as Anhidrosis and is an extremely serious condition that can be fatal. It needs special treatment and medical expertise ­ in­ cluding carrying water spray to irrigate the body.

all. That night, surprise surprise, he mysteriously ‘committed suicide!’ Well I can tell you, in the pic­ tures that emerged of him being rushed out of his apartment on a stretcher there was not a medic in sight. He was in fact surrounded by ‘men in suits’ speedily hustling him into the ambulance.

This was of course the reason Christine Keeler went quiet, she was obviously petrified that she too could ‘unexpectedly commit suicide.’ All sound a bit familiar, doesn’t it? No, I’m afraid none of this dam­ age limitation is happening by chance.

This is the result of a typical ongoing establish­ ment conspiracy. The main character in the investi­ gation ‘commits suicide.’ The Prince goes on televi­ sion to categorically deny any involvement and then the best lawyers money can buy go into court and endeavour to destroy those who have made the ac­ cusations. Unfortunately, because he totally screwed up, the prosecution must be rubbing their hands at the veritable colander of holes they can pick in his interpretation of the events.

My guess is his lawyers will now never dare risk him actually appearing on the witness stand. One thing is for sure, there are plenty more worms to appear from this particular can before they do final­ ly manage to screw the lid down. If they ever do!

A Quantum Leap into the future?

GOOGLE, IBM and China are in a race to create a truly useful quan­ tum computer. And billions of dollars all around the world are being ploughed into the technology.

In October 2019, Sycamore, (Google’s quan­ tum computer) performed a calculation in a mere 200 seconds that would take the world’s fastest supercomputer, the IBM Summit, 10,000 years to perform! Yes, 10,000 years!! With Sycamore, Google claims to have reached quan­ tum supremacy, the point where a quantum computer can perform calculations that surpass anything the most advanced supercomputers today can do.

That’s great you say but what can it be used for?

It could design more efficient batteries, make ef­ fective medicines, better security, sensors and accu­ rate measurement (metrology) in the form of atomic clocks and more accurate GPS to be used in self driving autonomous cars for example and if you would like to buy one, a Quantum Computer is like­ ly to cost a cool $100 million.

We can’t discuss Quantum Computing without mentioning the other buzz word in the tech world at the moment which is Artificial Intelligence or AI.

The UK’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is exploring the use of AI to judge whether benefit claims are true. An £8 million ‘intelligent automation garage’ has been created by the DWP with the goal of developing up to 100 new robots to assist Britain’s welfare system.

One thousand new IT staff have also been re­ cruited to help support the DWP’s ambitions, mmm so a 1,000 IT staff on approx 25,000 grand a year saves money.

Artificial Intelligence can be used to solve prob­ lems across the board. AI can help businesses in­ crease sales, detect fraud, improve customer experi­ ence, automate work processes and provide predictive analysis. Financial services can benefit from AI­based process automation and fraud detec­ tion.

Well that’s the good news and here is the not so good news...

It is predicted the Artificial Intelligence will even­ tually replace Telemarketing, Bookkeeping Clerks, Compensation and Benefits Managers, Reception­ ists, Couriers, Proof­readers, Computer Support Specialists, Market Research Analysts, Advertising Salespeople and Retail Salespeople.

ON THE STREETS Dear Editor I AM writing in response to the Our View section in last week’s paper. You spoke about homelessness and how it is getting worse in Spain.

My wife and I live in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol and we are getting quite wor­ ried about the amount of homeless people on the streets. It’s getting to the point that going to the supermarket is a problem.

They camp outside and continuously ask for money. Whilst I can empathise with their situation, it gets quite intimidating when they shout and have scuffles between them.

My wife doesn’t go to certain places on her own any more.

I think we need to bring this issue to our town halls and really give it some impor­ tance. What can we all do to get this sorted?

We need to get these people off the street for their safety and ours.

Animal cruelty Hello Hola I JUST read the article on animal cruelty in Paloma Park in Benalmadena from Octo­ ber and wanted to add that during my holiday in July I also witnessed teenagers terrorising the animals, chasing them and trying the catch them. I was very up­ set by this and it altered how I felt about one of my favourite parts of Benalmade­ na. I really want as many people involved with the park like the staff running it to be aware and to do something about it.

I know resources will be tight but as a place that people visit often as a family and with children to enjoy the nature and animals this is the last disturbing thing you want to witness and you want to feel as if the animals are being re­ spected and their welfare needs upheld.

If you are able to pass this info to peo­ ple involved with the park in Benalmade­ na or give me any contacts I’d really ap­ preciate it.

BLACK FRIDAY has rolled back around and is planned for November 29 this year. Retailers worldwide have spent the last month reminding shoppers about the incoming discounts and bargains. But where did the shopping madness start?

The term refers informally to the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States and marks the start of America’s Christmas shopping. Every year, the shopping frenzy has increased and retailers open earlier and earlier to welcome the masses. Since 2006, there have been 12 reported deaths and 117 injuries in the US. Europe has now seen the arrival of the legendary Friday. As with most things, the experience hasn’t reached the excessiveness or extravagance of our neighbours across the pond. Shops have simply welcomed the new tradition as an opportunity to get the Christmas season underway and each year festivities seem to start at an earlier date.

There is no doubt that Black Friday has infiltrated and greatly impacts buying trends. Consumers are getting into the habit of waiting until Black Friday sales to buy their selected items and some choose to get an early start on present buying. Could the new tradition mean the end of last-minute Christmas shopping?

Following in the same footsteps, technological companies have now created Cyber Monday for their tech products and it will be on November 2.

ENGAGING with the arts can be bene­ ficial for both mental and physical health.

This is a key conclusion of a new re­ port from the WHO Regional Office for Europe analysing the evidence from over 900 global publications ­ the most comprehensive review of evi­ dence on arts and health to date.

“Bringing art into people’s lives through activities including dancing, singing, and going to museums and concerts offers an added dimension to how we can improve physical and mental health,” says Dr Piroska Östlin, WHO Regional Director for Europe a.i.

“The examples cited in this ground breaking WHO report show ways in which the arts can tackle ‘wicked’ or complex health challenges such as dia­ betes, obesity and mental ill health.

They consider health and well­being in a broader societal and community context, and offer solutions that com­ mon medical practice has so far been unable to address effectively,” Dr Östlin explains.

sure to violence. Later in life, music can support cognition in people with dementia ­ singing in particular has been found to improve attention, episodic memory and executive func­ tion.

Arts in health care In health­care settings, arts activi­ ties can be used to supplement or en­ hance treatment protocols. For exam­ ple: *Listening to music or making art have been found to reduce the side

They can combine multiple health­promoting factors at once (such as physical activity and mental health support) and have a low risk of negative outcomes.

Several countries are now looking to arts and social prescribing schemes, whereby primary­care doctors can re­ fer their patients to arts activities.

Dangers in your makeup bag CHEMICALS found in certain make­up products, shampoos and lotions could disrupt hor­ mone levels in teenage girls.

Scientists have warned this dis­ ruption increases the risks of cancer and other illnesses later in life.

Researchers at University of California, Berkeley, (USA) fo­ cused on teenage girls.

For three days, the study’s 100 participants stopped using their regular cosmetics and were provided with cosmetics labelled free of chemicals; in­ cluding phthalates, parabens, triclosan and oxybenzone; all chemicals thought to affect changes of hormone levels.

After just three days of not using their regular products, their dangerous chemical levels dropped by 45 per cent.

Study co­author Maritza Car­ denas, said: “One of the goals of our study was to create aware­ ness among participants of chemicals found in products, to help make people more aware of what they’re using.”

You are beautiful SPANISH beauty queen Chaiyenne Huisman is urging young girls not to idolise celebrities who display negativity.

According to Manilva Bulletin, the newly-crowned Miss Asia Pacific International 2019 claims a lot of famous people show ‘show negativity’ and believes that ‘being your natural self and embracing who you are and where you come from is beautiful.’

She added that ‘perfection does not exist’ and said she wants to be an inspiration for younger women and ‘the next generation.’

Huisman, the first Spanish Miss Asia Pacific International, speaks six languages. Before competing in the beauty contest, she held down four jobs - including managing a hotel - and did a ‘bit of modelling just to beef up my portfolio.’

She went on to say that ‘part of life is finding your way through it and finding out who you are as a person,’ pointing out that this does not need to be worked out at a young age.

Speaking openly, the beauty said young girls ‘need a little guidance’ to not ‘look up to these (unnamed) celebrities.’

Banderas on stage A N T O N I O BA N D E R A S is back in the limelight, this time, taking on the big stage at Malaga’s So­ ho Theatre. Banderas and the cast of ‘A Chorus Line’ presented their long­awaited musical.

The show was delayed whilst he attended com­ mitments of Dolor y Glo­ ria, his highly successful film directed by Pedro Almodóvar. Renovation works at the old Alame­ da Theatre also caused further delays.

However, the wait for enthusiasts has finally come to an end.

The classic musical by Michael Bennett, which premiered on Broadway in 1975 and won nine Tony awards and a Pulitzer, has been re­ vived by Baayork Lee and Malaga’s biggest movie star.

Tickets are available from mid­November ­ January 26, 2020.

Autumn is now here AS summer is now over, it is that time to start thinking of red wine and winter food.

So I thought I would share my late mother’s recipe for what she called shepherds pie all her life, though as it is made with beef, these days we would have to be correct and call it cottage pie.

Yes, you say, what an ordinary humdrum dish. Except you might not think so if you read on….

It starts with standard ingredients of minced beef and chopped onions.

First, you fry the mince until it just turns brown. You are getting rid of the fat. Seriously buy the best mince beef you can afford.

The least fat the better. Drain the fat off.

Then into your baking dish go the mince and the onions. Now add a layer of well­chopped cabbage.

Generously sprinkle on some Worcestershire sauce.

Finally add a can of Guinness.

Put in the oven on a medium heat covering the mixture with foil. Take out every half an hour and stir. It should reduce but not go dry.

The potatoes are next. Peel, half and quarter, and boil.

When ready, test if they fall off a knife easily, then put in a

bowl for mashing. Here are three topping ideas: Type 1: add generous dollops of mayonnaise until the mashing gives a good heavy smooth consistency. No lumps please! Add salt and pepper and then the potato is ready for spreading.

Type 2: add parmesan cheese to the process, best finely grated but can be flakes. If you use flakes spread generously and evenly.

Type 3: add horseradish to the mash potato mayonnaise mix, goes especially well combined with the parmesan cheese.

If you need to pause the dish to get it ready for a specific time, do so at this stage and hold it back out of the oven. The last stage takes around 20­30 minutes.

When the mince has reduced, but is still moist with some liq­ uid still showing on the bottom of the dish, add dollops of mash potato and spread with a fork. Then put back in the oven without foil, at the top to just cause a brown colour to take hold of the potato on the crest of the pattern left by spreading with the fork.

Put the bottle of Worcestershire sauce on the table in case anyone wants a top­up. I usually serve with peas or a vegetable mix. Leftovers can be frozen successfully in portions for another time.

Now serve with a nice hearty Tinto Rioja or Ribuero del Duero.

Eat: With Ellis Wayman Pigs’ cheeks in cider and mustard COOKED long and slow, cheeks are the ten­ derest pork you will ever have. I’ve converted many to the joys of the cheek with this recipe! Enjoy with sweet potato and garlic mash.

Ingredients (Serves 4): 3 large pigs’ cheeks (or 4 if the oinkers were thin faced!)

1 leek, 2 large carrots, 1 stick celery, 1 ap­ ple…. all finely diced Olive oil and butter Plain flour seasoned Glass of cider and chicken stock… feel free to buy a large bottle of cider and ‘relax’ with the rest!

1 tbsp crème fraiche and 1 tsp Dijon mus­ tard.

Method: Dust the cheeks in the seasoned flour and brown on both sides in some butter and olive oil. Remove from pan once lightly coloured.

Christmas market coming up THE Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone Christmas market is coming up.

The annual FACE event will be held at the new Arboleas community centre on the afternoon of Friday November 29.

Opening the market will be members of the Garner Family from Channel 4’s Sun, Sea and Selling Houses.

FACE promises there will be many stalls selling all types of merchandise, mulled wine and mince pies. Santa Claus will be also be there.

The All Aloud Choir will be keeping proceedings festive with their fabulous arrangements of traditional Christmas carols. They will be followed by some more Christmasrelated tunes performed by Carol George.

Carrie’s Dusty Boots will round off the entertainment with a line dancing demonstration.

A number of the organisations which FACE supports will be receiving Christmas presents.

The draw for the FACE Christmas raffle will also take place with a top prize of €200 in cash. Raffle tickets are already on sale and can be purchased from any of the FACE committee members or from Chapman’s bar-restaurant in Albox, and at various Christmas fairs throughout November.

Festival focus in Fines THE focus will be on firmly on the norther n region of the province this weekend in Fines when the municipality hosts the Almeria Tiene Norte festival.

This will be the seventh edition of the two-day festival, which runs over November 23 and 24, and which will feature a full programme of activities.

The festival will also serve as the launch pad for a campaign to raise awareness about correct waste disposal.

Tesla in Berlin ELECTRIC vehicle pioneer Tesla is set to build its first European facto­ ry and design facility in Berlin in a move to further boost its reputa­ tion for reliability and sporting prowess.

Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, made the announcement at a Germany’s Golden Steering Awards ceremony, stating that European ‘Gigafactory’ would make batteries, powertrains and vehicles ­ starting with its Model Y SUV. Musk cited risks surrounding the UK’s exit from the EU for his deci­ sion, “Brexit [uncertainty] made it too risky to put a Gigafactory in the UK.” Tesla will be taking on Germany’s own BMW, Mercedes and Volkswa­

gen as they start rolling out zero­ emission vehicles, in a move fitting with the German government’s plan to transform the country into a leader in electric mobility.

While Germany’s renowned car industry is mainly based in the south of Europe’s biggest economy, the capital has become a hub for start­ups and has attracted many creative and technology firms since the fall of the Berlin Wall three decades ago.

Musk also said the factory would be near the capital’s new Branden­ burg international airport.

LEWIS HAMILTON apolo­ gised to driver Alex Albon after the world champion accepted full responsibili­ ty for their late crash in Brazil.

Hamilton, who was run­ ning behind Albon after he stopped for a third time under a late safety car, went for an overtake pass on the London­born Red Bull driver for second place with just two laps left.

But the Mercedes driver crashed into the side of Albon, spinning the Red Bull man around. Hamil­ ton limped to the flag with damage to the front of his car but later re­ ceived a five­second penalty from the race stewards demoting him from third to seventh po­ sition.

“I apologise to Alex, and I hold my hands up for the accident,” said Hamilton, who also collected two

penalty points on his dri­ vers’ licence.

He said he totally ac­ cepted the blame pointing out that it was not his in­ tention and “you hardly ever see me collide with anyone. In hindsight I could have waited to make the move, but hind­ sight is a wonderful thing.”

Hamilton went on to say that an opportunity arose “and I was in shooting dis­ tance.”

The council Sports department­organised event on Saturday December 21 is expected to attract hundreds of athletes.

The race for the youngest participants will get underway at 4.30pm and the adult race will start at 5pm. The starting line will be the fairground next to the sports pavillion.

Sports councillor Alejandro Campos encouraged all athletes from the municipality, province and nearby regions to take part what he said is the oldest race of these characteristics in Almeria.

The councillor said the council is excited to be preparing the event, which he described as the starting point for the municipality’s Festive Sea­ son celebrations.
