STEEP RESCUE A MOTORIST whose car plunged almost 20 metres into a verge was released and brought to safety by firefighters on Monday morning. The Almuñecar Fire Department were called to a ‘slope’ near Itrabo at around 10am after reports a vehicle had left the road. Firefighters located the Seat Ibiza, in which the driver was trapped after leaving the provincial road near the town of Ítrabo, and falling up to 20 metres near the Puente de Nuevo. According to a department spokesperson: “The injured driver was trapped inside the car so it was necessary for firefighters to carry out the rescue and subsequent transfer to the Hospital Comarcal Santa Ana de Motril.” His injuries have not been disclosed.

OFFICER SHORTFALLS THE Partido Popular, in opposition on Velez-Malaga Council, called for more Local Police officers. Councillor Daniel Aranda urged the town hall to take on 20 new officers, to cover shortfalls in personnel which were reducing public safety levels inside the town. Vacancies left by retiring officers were not filled, pointed out Aranda, who expressed ‘preoccupation’ with the precarity and neglect the municipality’s Local Police force was currently experiencing. “There are fewer officers than 10 years ago although the number of fiestas, celebrations and parades have multiplied by three or four,” said the councillor. This increase sometimes made it necessary to contract private security,

Aranda claimed. Officers worked overtime for which they were not paid and could not attend to many of the services required in Velez- Malaga’s outlying neighbourhoods. Night shifts were neglected because there were too few officers, ‘provoking insecurity’ in the local population, Aranda continued. There were also material shortages, he said. “Vehicles are not being repaired, not all personnel have bulletproof jackets and uniforms are inadequate although €6,000 was squandered on non-regulation polo shirts that ended up in the rubbish,” he complained. “There is cash for lavishness but not for ensuring the safety of the local population,” he lamented, accusing the town hall of “serious irresponsibility.”

MOTRIL Town Hall took a decisive step in dealing with dogowners who allow pets to foul pavements and public places. From now on, the town hall hopes to reverse their negligence with an awareness campaign that includes distributing kits to help owners to clean up after their pets. “This means that they have no excuse for neglecting their civic duty,” said Motril’s mayor Luisa Maria Chamorro, who thanked all town hall departments for their input. “Firstly, it is essential to register dogs on the municipal register,” said Health and Consumer Affairs councillor Angeles Lopez Cano who gave further details of the campaign. “Secondly, dog-owners should comply with their obligation of keeping the town clean, an obligation we all share,” said Lopez Cano as she called for cooperation from the local population. At the same time, Public Safety councillor Maria Angeles Escamez announced that there would be a ‘clear response’ on the part of the town hall, with fines for dog-owners who repeatedly ignored the campaign and did not clean up after their pets.
