AS expected, the PSOE socialists were A l i c a n t e P r o v i n c e ’s most-voted party but this was the least surprising aspect of l a s t S u n d a y ’s e l e c tions. The socialists won four seats as they did in the April elections, but despite taking more votes than any other party in 11 municipalities includi n g Al i c a n t e City, Benidorm, Villajoyosa, Altea, Alfaz and San Vicente, they lost 22,000 votes. The Partido Popular retained i t s t h r e e se a t s a n d was most-voted in its traditional heartlands of La Nucia, Finestrat, Orihuela and Santa Pola, while gaining 27,000 more v o te s province-wide than in the April election.
