SAFE AS HOUSES EURO WEEKLY NEWS reporter Linda Hall now questions this saying after four tonnes of rubble crashed to the ground as a wall of her neighbour’s house in Xativa’s Old Town collapsed. In fact, four houses were affected in the terrifying incident last Thursday. “I’d like to describe the noise but can’t because I have never heard anything like it,” she admitted. “Then I saw the patio piled up with rubble, masonry, broken glass and an open skylight. I called the 112 Emergencies number who were absolutely marvellous.” Neighbours milled around outside and it became obvious she
and her husband got off lightly. “These are terraced townhouses but some, like our neighbour’s, have extensions at the back and that is what collapsed.” Firemen, police, city councillors, the municipal architect and even Xativa’s mayor Roger Cerda were on the scene almost immediately. “At first it looked as though our own problem would soon be solved. Then the firemen stepped in,” Linda explained. All the hanging debris and rafters above the patio must first be removed before work can start below, they decreed. “Patience” they’ve told me. “Miraculously, not one person was hurt by the falling masonry. So it was our lucky day, too.”
HOUSE COLLAPSE: Disaster, but no-one hurt.
