BOOZERS LOSERS FOR MAGALUF THE party’s over for drunks dragging down the name of a buzzing island town. Magaluf, the hedonistic party capital of Mallorca, has suffered plenty of negative press over the last few years. Increased crime rates and the booze-fuelled antics of the tourists that flock to the destination every year have earned the town a bad name. Now raving party animals are no longer welcome in the town that’s hoping to carve out a more mature image to attract more select sun seekers all year round. This year, with the end of the summer season, bar, restaurant and hotel owners have vowed to improve the image of the Calvia town and many have invested millions of euros to improve their facilities and

Tourist figures fall TOURIST numbers are expected to drop by 25,000 in Mallorca. It’s predicted the collapse of Thomas Cook will rob the island of 25,000 tourists in October. In a press conference last week, the Minister of Mobility and Housing, Marc Pons, explained that Thomas Cook transported 170,000 people to Mallorca this year. This is only 20 per cent of the total passenger numbers that the airline transports to Mallorca. The drop in tourist numbers will affect

business owners and hotels on the island that rely on the month of October to draw out the summer season. Early this year, passenger figures increased and while numbers grew in the high season, the number of flights was lower than in previous years. The government is confident that tourism on the island will recover and, with the investment of €260 million at Palma airport, more flights will be able to land and more passengers processed efficiently when flying in or out of Mallorca.

make Magaluf a cornerstone of quality tourism is the opening of the Emopryium Gastronomic Market that now occupies the site of the old

Baywatch nightclub. The aim is to encourage a wider range of tourist profiles to the area and steer away from the bargain booze and debauchery. Business owners are also working hard to extend the season and therefore encourage more people to visit all year round. This move would also extend the contracts of people that work in the bars, restaurants and hotels and mean that less people would be less reliant on the paro, or unemployment benefit, once the season ends. Magaluf still has a long way to go to improve its image, but with some careful planning, some strategic investment, and the introduction of a more sustainable tourist model it could become a tourist hotspot for different reasons in coming years.
