COSTA DEL SOL

YOUR PAPER, YOUR VOICE, YOUR OPINION

FLOOD AFTERMATH THE storms that hit the Costa del Sol on Saturday September 1 4 b ro u g h t f l o o d i n g and destruction with them. Worst hit was Alhaurin el Grande where fast flowing flood water dragged away dozens of cars. Several homes were flooded out and roads badly damaged, with Mayor Toñi Ledesma describing the situation as chaotic. The La Teja stream burst its banks, drowning the Fuengirola road. When the water went down, the road was still impassable. A thick layer of mud - which had partially buried several cars - had to be removed. First estimates put the damage to the town at €2 million. This does not include damage to homes or crops. A total of 20 kilometres of rural roads in the municipality were damaged along with the roof of the sports centre and walls of several schools and institutions. Alhaurin de la Torre and Cartama also suffered, but not quite as badly, while Coin had more than €1 million worth of damage caused to roads. Official figures show that Coin had the heaviest rain (149 l/sqm), followed by Alhaurin el Grande

CLEAN UP: After the destructive storm last weekend. (146), Antequera (146), Alozaina (133), Villanueva de la Concepción (114), Ojen (105), Archidona (103), Tolox (103), Cartama (102), Monda (98) and Casarabonela (94). The 112 emergency line dealt with 327 storm-related incidents in the province out of a total of 720 in the whole of Andalucia. Although flooding and damage was caused, this part of the country missed the worst of the storms that swept across eastern and southern Spain. They have claimed the lives of seven people in the Alicante and Almeria areas and caused many

millions of euros worth of damage to property and infrastructure. Thousands of people were cut off and many had to be evacuated. Meteorologist Angel Rivera explained that last weekend’s rainfall was unusually high. He

attributed the strength of the storms to them picking up on the remnants of Hurricane Dorian which hit the eastern coast of America. Rivera also explained that the total area affected is one of the largest recorded as the storm was so slow moving.
