DEADLY: Scores of animals were killed by the tornado.
Freak tornado wreaks havoc SCIENTISTS have arrived in the Malaga town of Campillos to investigate the ferocity of a tornado that ripped through the area leaving behind piles of rubble and scores of dead livestock. The twister skirted round t h e t o w n o n M o n d a y, s o limiting damage, but many farm buildings were seriously damaged. Reports say 70 goats were killed when their shed collapsed, and several cattle suffered the same fate. Now the Malaga Provincial Government has promised to help all munici p a l i t i e s a ff e c t e d b y t h e
storm, which dumped heavy rain on the region and brought flooding with it. Large quantities of olive and other crops were also lost in the Sierra de Yeguas when heavy hail crashed to the ground. Meterologists from central government are now examining the damage to
quantify the severity of the tornado and the storm. Apart from the scientific information they will gather there is also the question of whether insurance companies will pay up, or if it is termed an act of God, meaning compensation will be paid by the consortium for natural disasters.
A BRITISH gang that was holed up in Istan is one of six drugs organisations rolled up by police in a massive operation. In total, 85 people have been arrested and 5,200 kilos of hashish, ₏141,000 cash, 49 vehicles, of which 26 had been stolen, and 17 firearms including an AK47 assault rifle were seized. These organisations smuggled the drugs to Malaga and then to other Spanish provinces as well as to France, Italy and the United Kingdom. The British gang consisted of four people with a base in Istan, near Marbella, who shipped drugs to the UK via the Santander ferry in removals lorries. Other gangs were Spanish, French, Moroccan and Algerian. Forty searches were carried out in towns including Marbella, Manilva, Ojen, Estepona, Monda and La Linea de la Concepcion.
