Health boost for the summer THE Murcian Health Service (SMS) has devised a plan to hire more than 6,500 health professionals to keep the region safe in the scorching hot weeks to come. The plan has been devised by the managing director of the SMS, Asensio Lopez, who has called for more doctors, nurses, physicians, technicians and assistants, most of whom will be placed in the most densely populated areas of the region. The SMS will also mobilise 27 new vehicles made up of 12 non-medical ambulances, six basic life support vehicles, and one rapid intervention vehicle (VIR). Some 2,800 new hospital beds will reportedly be made available which marks a 3 per cent increase on last year’s improvement. This is necessary as there is reportedly a longer than average waiting list in July. The medical body is talking about redistributing the staff in hospitals around Murcia as there is too often only a single doctor on call.

Calm before the storm
STORMY WEATHER: Heavy rain, high winds and hailstones were experienced. MORE than 1,700 lightning strikes were reported in the Valencia region at the weekend as freak weather struck parts of the area. According to Spanish weather agency, Aemet, parts of the Valencia region recorded their highest temperature since 2015 on Saturday, with some towns sweltering in more than 40 degrees.
Then on Sunday severe storms erupted. There were reports of heavy rain, high winds and hailstones, with some described as being as big as chickpeas, hitting towns in the north of the region and Aemet confirmed 1,700 lightning strikes in the region. The storms brought an immediate cooling in the temperature with falls of up to 13 de-
grees in 20 minutes being recorded.
