SOLIDARITY: Local politicians show their support for LGBT rights.
Celebrating diversity A LOUD, proud, multicoloured parade through Almeria City centre was the highlight of events in the provincial capital in support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Two giant rainbow-coloured flags formed the centrepiece of Saturday evening’s procession from Puerta Purchena to the Plaza Vieja to celebrate di-
versity and a call for inclusion and equal rights regardless of sexual orientation, identity, gender expression or characteristics. Hundreds of people joined city councillors, provincial deputies and representatives of the Colega Almeria LGBT association and Families for Diversity Almeria, which organised the event, as they marched
under the banner ‘Every day, everywhere and all rights.’ At the end of the parade Colega Almeria President Antonio Ferre read out the LGBT manifesto. He told the crowd that after half a century of fighting for equality the situation for the LGTB community had improved, but warned it had taken a step back in recent years because “the shadow of
the ultra-right everywhere tries to darken our path.” Without mentioning specific names, Ferre claimed there were forces in Spain which “want us back in the closet.” This year’s pride celebrations marked the the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York, recognised as the start of the LGTB rights movement.
