Young mum still missing
By Dilip Kuner THE landowner in the case of the two-year-old boy who fell down an illegal well may have committed reckless homicide, according to a judge. Now the Malaga-based judge has ordered proceedings to continue against David Serrano as there are signs of criminality because he left the borehole uncovered. Little Julen Roselló died after falling down a well in Totalan (Malaga) on January 13. It took a specialist mine rescue team until January 26 to complete a rescue tunnel to reach Julen, by which time it was too late. The toddler fell down the unlicensed borehole while having a picnic on the land with his mother and father, Vicky and José. He ran off and fell down the 107-metre shaft, which was only around 30cm in diameter. The Malaga judge has been investigating the case to see if there is evidence of criminality. Serrano maintains that he warned José that there was a new well, something Julen’s father has always denied. Now the judge says no warning was given and says there is a case for reckless homicide to be answered. There will now be a period of 10 days for interested parties to call for an oral trial or to have the case dismissed.

He states that there are “indications” against Serrano as he was aware that the well where the minor fell “was uncovered without being pro-
tected with sufficient safety measures.” Serrano already faces a bill of nearly €700,000 to cover the cost of the rescue operation. He is also facing civil action from the government for breaking safety rules, and could end up with liabilities of around €1 million. Authorities are also pursuing the company that drilled the well on civil charges. All the civil cases have been put on hold until any possible criminal proceedings have been completed. This could be up to two years.
THE search for a new mum is still underway after around 20 Guardia Civil specialists have been combing the Arenas area of Velez-Malaga for over a week. A thorough search is being carried out to find more clues MISSING: The search about Romanian continues for Dana Leonte. D a n a L e o n t e ’s disappearance on June 12. Dana, 31, disappeared after leaving a note behind for her partner and taking clothes and a sum of money. She also left behind a seven-month-old child she shares with her partner, which has left her family and relatives shocked and confused. “Dana has always wanted a family so to disappear so close to having her first child is tot a l l y o u t o f c h a r a c t e r, ” s a i d a c l o s e f a m i l y member. The note simply explained that she had ‘things to solve’ and it is thought that she had maybe returned to her home country of Romania. An investigation and interviews with her partner reportedly revealed she was in a large amount of debt, including a ‘friendly loan’ of €12,000 for the start of a small business.

Trawler blaze off Caleta AT around 6.40am a fire was reported off the coastline of Benajarafe towards the port of Caleta de Velez. A fishing boat, El Campañero, based in the port had caught fire around five nautical miles off the shoreline on its way to local fishing grounds. According to 112 reports, none of the inhabitants on board were injured in the incident. After trying to extinguish the blaze themselves their efforts proved futile and they escaped the burning vessel on a life raft. A nearby fellow fishing boat, the Avante Claro, was first on the scene and picked up the stranded crew. The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but the fibreglass construction of the boat’s hull contributed to the speed that the fire took hold, not giving the crew much time to escape. Shortly after the crew were picked up, 112 maritime rescue appeared after receiving reports of a burning vessel, and the crew were transferred to medical centres for standard examinations.

Mayor visits towns youth programme T H E m a y o r o f Ve l e z - M a l a g a , A n t o n i o M o r e n o F e r r e r, a n d C o u n c i l l o r V í c t o r González visited a group of young students that were taking part in the training courses developed by the Community Social Services. The students are taking part in the training with the aim of educating other young people of the importance of education and social integration, all to help prevent school dropouts and unemployment later in life. This week, the Velez-Malaga mayor visited a group of 20 students that were preparing for their secondary education exams, rewarding them for their achieve-
ments and efforts with tickets to the Weekend Beach Festival. Moreno Ferrer explained that Social Services is working to create tools and prevention activities loaded with positive values and motivation, aimed at young people between 16 and 21 years and their families. Ferrer went on to praise the efforts of the community’s Social Services and the families of the students for all their efforts in guidance and encouragement for the municipality’s young generation. Councillor González stressed that initiatives such as this, ‘make Velez-Malaga a more social town, more equal and with fewer barriers.’
Benajarafe priest suffers racist abuse JESUS RAMESH BABU GUDAPATI, 37, arrived in Spain in 2014 from his native country of India. He was appointed parish priest of Benajarafe and Chilches eight months ago by the Bishopric of Malaga and since his entry into the local parish he has allegedly been the victim of ‘racial and xenophobic abuse’ from a group of neighbours. Father Jesus has reportedly been forced to live in the Calvary church after threats on his life were made by certain members of his parish who have taken offence to the fact he is
an Indian native. He claims he has been called ‘black’ and has had his car vandalised. And according to press reports, he has also been threatened with kidnap and death when they warned him they would ‘cut his head.’ The priest has the full support of the town’s parishioners and they have all stood in support of Father Jesus. “He is always there to help us as much as possible,” said one resident who cannot understand the abuse he is experiencing. The neighbourhood has called for police action.

Winning bridge THIS bridge in northern Spain has been named the second best in the world by an industry association. The Puente de Rande, in Vigo, Galicia, was named the second best by the International Association of Bridges and Structural Engineering (IABSE). A jury of 100 engineers judged and ranked the bridges. The Puente de Rande came ahead of Britain’s Mersey Gateway and behind Mukogawa in Japan. IABSE said the bridge’s sustainable and environmentally-friendly design
were among the reasons it came second. The Puente de Rande is a cablestayed bridge which spans the Vigo bay across a strait which gives the bridge its name. It links the towns of Redondela and Moaña. Engineers Fabrizio de Miranda, from Italy and Spain’s Florencio del Pozo and Alfredo Passaro designed the bridge. Construction began in 1973 and it opened in 1981. The bridge won the Outstanding European Metal Construction Award in 1979.
The Puente de Rande is more than 1,600 metres long and its pillars are 148 metres high. It was the longest cablestayed bridge in Spain and one of the longest in the world when it was built. Around 50,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day on average and an estimated 231 million have gone over it since its opening. Galicia’s Audasa infrastructure authority began works to widen the bridge in 2016 at an estimated cost of almost €108 million. They were completed in December 2017.

THE Spanish Red Cross now has English-speaking representatives taking care of the Axarquian province. The Spanish Red Cross provides immediate and potentially lifesaving medical care for people across the country and the new initiative has been launched to promote the assistance of foreign residents too. They will now be able to provide basic necessities such as food, clothing and shoes to people who are particularly vulnerable, and also the loan of mobility equipment such as wheelchairs, walking sticks and crutches. They also provide a vital home care service for the region’s residents in need, providing buses for the immobile to reach the towns, home visits to help with social care, supporting people who are in hospital who haven’t the support of family members and organising activities to help with the elderly population. To assist in these services, there will be an emergency call centre available and a mobile app for reporting emergencies.
TWO men have been rescued in Almuñecar after getting stuck on the boom crane they were operating. The men were performing routine maintenance of trimming the palm trees in an urbanisation in the town when they got into difficulty with the crane equipment. The vehicle that was supporting the boom crane began to dislodge from its ground supports and the pod they were working from became unstable. Firefighters and police officers managed to restabilise the vehicle and lowered the crane back down to safety. “When arriving at the place we observed that the towing ve hic le w a s a bout t o capsi ze wi t h t he t wo occupants. We proceeded to fit the vehicle and secure it with winches from our vehicle to proceed to lower the bucket-crane and to save the two men who occupied it,” said the police officers at the scene.

Beach safety programme THE mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, has presented a proposal to improve services on Motril’s beach areas. The Safety Plan was launched with the help of the deputy mayor, María Ángeles Escámez, and has been designed to improve the security, surveillance and first aid facilities on the town’s beaches. The plan will include im-
proved services on the beaches of Poniente, El Cable and Playa Granada and has coincided with the start of the town’s busy tourist season. The beaches in the area have just received the national award for cleanliness and facilities, the Blue Flag and the Q for Quality emblem, so the mayor insists that the beach safety position needs to reflect the
same high standard. The beaches will have four fully equipped lifeguard posts and extra lifeguards distributed along the stretches of beach, all of which have received extra training for sea rescues in adverse weather conditions. The rescue boats will be two jet skis, equipped with a rescue stretcher, and each one will have a titled skipper.
The medical vehicle will be a Class C ambulance with personnel, designed to provide advanced life support. There will also be in addition a manned bathroom adapted for disabled users. A total of 18 people will simultaneously be on the beach at all times from 12 noon to 8pm from Monday to Sunday, plus a Local Police patrol offering full time surveillance.

THIS summer VelezMalaga will host a full and ambitious programme of sports activities both on land and on water. Councillor for Sports, José Hipólito Gómez, and councillor for Beaches, Jesus Perez Atencia, announced the programme that includes activities for all ages and abilities. The beaches will once again be home to municipal sports, where you can swim, padel tennis, tennis, zumba, beach volleyball and different water sports. For those not too confident in the water, the mayor of sports said that during the summer months there will be classes available of swimming for children, adults, beginners and advanced level, and also free swimming in the indoor pools in Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar. Padel matches will be available in the Parque Maria Zambrano in Velez as well as the Salvador Sanchez Pavilion in Torre del Mar. Off the shore there promises to be an action packed summer of water sports ahead with windsurfing courses, paddle boarding, kayaking, wakeboarding and water skiing, from Monday to Friday and in different locations. Sportsman Kiko Montoro was also on hand at the meeting to announce that volleyball lessons will be taught throughout the summer on the Levante beach in front of El Copo. Solidarity with LGBTQI community SUPPORT: Motril Council is promoting equal rights. THE mayor of Motril has committed to fight against the persecution of gay people and has signed a manifesto to promote equal rights for members of the LGBTQI community. Following gay pride month, which celebrated the 50-year anniversary of the Stonewall
riots, LGBTQI activists have influenced a lot of political change around Spain. They have demanded that people of all sexual identities and orientations be treated equally and afforded a safe space within which to coexist. The council of Motril, with the exception of the Vox par-
ty, signed the manifesto which declared the town’s intentions to develop protective measures, awareness programmes, information systems and training pertaining to gender and sexual diversity. The manifesto also outlines propositions to create and change existing laws that
are directly relevant to equal rights. A spokesperson from the council of Motril condemned any form of violence be it physical or verbal aimed at humiliating or hurting someone based on their views on gender and sexual orientation.
THE city council of Velez-Malaga has announced its support for the LGBTQI movement in the wake of Pride Month. Councillor Victor Gonzalez, who is in charge of social law and equality, along with members of the municipality, participated in the events held on Pride Day at the end of last month. He wore the rainbow flag to celebrate gay pride and read out a manifesto denouncing discrimination. In the announcement, Gonzalez mentioned that efforts are being made to develop a more just and egalitarian society but there is still much that could be done. He also made the point that in some areas of the world people are sent to jail or even killed based on their sexual orientation. Andalucia as a whole has made notable progress relative to the rest of the world as it was reportedly one of the first and only places where children entering puberty can choose their gender and get hormone injections to better suit their preferred role.
THE next two months will see a number of sales taking place in shops, but representatives of Motril Council as well as the local Merchants Association are reminding consumers of their rights. Whilst everyone in the town wants to see local businesses thriving and the councillors are promoting local purchases, there is always the possibility that consumers may not always be treated as they should. If anyone has any doubts about the goods being offered during the sale period then they are welcome to contact the Municipal Office of Consumer Information (OMIC) located in Calle San Rafael. All goods offered at a reduced price should be of the same quality as they were when offered at full price and although there is no obligation for traders to replace goods unless they are defective, this can only be achieved if the purchaser keeps the receipt to prove the date of purchase and the amount paid.

THE Business and Employment department of the Velez-Malaga Council organises a number of free events during the year to promote work opportunities, especially for members of vulnerable groups. In the last four years, they have invested a total of €16 million and helped more than 4,000 people find work. The latest, ‘Inserta 40+’ is aimed at boosting the skills and abilities of job seekers who are over 40 and providing them with tools to access the labour market, specifically within
the commerce sector. The programme which commenced in May has now drawn to an end and Councillor María José Roberto, visited the students to congratulate them on spending 250 hours in study and in job placement. Accompanying the councillor was Marta González Sanjuan (a representative of Social Smarts) who was responsible for coordinating the programme which included sections on languages, work procedures, new technologies and health and safety regulations.

In remembrance of Karen By Tara Rippin A PACKED church of all nationalities gathered for a moving memorial mass for the beloved British broadcaster Karen McMahon at La Cala de Mijas’ Santa Teresa parish church yesterday. Pastor Juan Naena led the service, during which Reverend David Hodgson of Calahonda Evangelical Church paid tribute to Karen who died in May following a brave fight with a lengthy illness. The well-known Costa del Sol figure began working with the Euro Weekly News many years ago on Bookworld España, before going on to present a hugely successful and popular programme on Mijas Comunicacion from 2009. The journalist, who presented English-language programme News with Views, was also responsible for show Mijas Internacional. Addressing a full congregation, Reverend Hodgson said: “I

timist International Costa del Sol also paid tribute to her friend and fellow member, recalling how Karen walked the Camino Santiago in high heels. She explained how Karen would always raise awareness about women and girls’ rights
on her show, and always put guests on her programme at ease. “You could feel her big heart for people, and her constant honesty.” Speaking after the ceremony, new president of Mijas La Cala Lions Club, Anita Humphreys, said: “Karen was always there to support the Lions. She had a wonderful soul.” Ali Meehan, founder of Costa Women, said: “She made a difference to the lives of so many people here on the Costa del Sol - the memories will remain.” EWN CEO Michel Euesden said: “Karen spread happiness throughout both the Spanish and English communities.” As well as Karen’s parents, family and friends, the memorial mass was attended by Consul representatives, politicians and members of an array of groups, charities and organisations. Body in reservoir A BODY recovered by police divers from a submerged car in a Spanish reservoir is thought to be that of a British man who disappeared three months ago. Fishermen who spotted the car in the Civan reservoir in Caspe, Zaragoza, alerted emergency services. Guardia Civil and specialist divers arrived at the scene to make the grim discovery. The car had just part of the roof poking out of the water. The body has been tentatively identified as 59-year-old Martin Walker who went missing at the start of March. The vehicle’s number plates match those of Mr Walker’s car which disappeared at the same time. Forensic tests and DNA analysis will be carried

out to confirm the identity. Divers attached airbags to the car and pulled the car from the lake in order to recover the body. Mr Walker, who ran a fish-
ing tours business called Catfish Capers on the River Ebro, was originally from High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. He had lived in Spain for around 15 years.

Spanish flag on Madrid City Hall THE new governing parties at Madrid City Council have hung a Spanish flag in place of the banner of the LGBTQ community which was due to be flown for Pride Month. The conservative Partido Popular (PP) and centrist Ciudadanos hung the flag on city hall as others were due to fly the rainbow flag to mark LGBTQ pride month. A rainbow banner has been placed off to one side of the building. It comes as another farright party, España 2000, unfurled a banner with the Spanish flag bearing the words ‘Straight Pride’ in Valencia City. The Spanish flag was put up shortly after Santiago Abascal, leader of the farright Vox, called on Madrid’s new mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida to do so.

ETA leader extradition SPAIN has asked France to extradite a forme r ETA te rroris t le a de r over t he 1987 bombing of a police barracks in Zaragoza in which 11 people died, five of them children. Josu Ternera (real name José Antonio Urrutikoetxea) was arrested on May 16 in the town of Sallanches, in the French Alps. He was held in custody initially, but conditionally released on June 19. H e ha d be e n on the run f r om Spani sh courts since 2002. Ternera joined ETA in the 1980s, where
he became head of the group’s political apparatus. In 1989 he was arrested in Bayonne and a year l at er he was sent enced t o 10 years in prison. After his release he was expelled by the French authorities and handed over to Spain on May 4, 1996. The Spanish National Court prosecuted him for belonging to an armed gang, then in June 1996 he was charged wi t h a 1986 bombing in Madrid in which 12 Guardia Civil officers died.
Police release kidnapped man POLICE released a man who had been held for seven days while his kidnappers demanded a €2 million ransom. The Argentinian victim was being held at a property in Madrid’s Prosperidad (Prosperity) district by a gang of five men - four French and one Russian. Their hopes of prospering from their crime were scuppered by National Police. An investigation began after Spanish police received, through diplomatic channels, a complaint filed in Argentina by
a relative of the abductee. The Argentine consulate in Spain reported that a relative of the abducted man had been contacted from Spain with demands for a €2 million ransom to be paid for his release. The victim himself also contacted the relative by phone warning of the seriousness of the situation and asking for the ransom to be paid. He said he and his entire family had been threatened with their lives if the demands were not met. The Spanish authorities were
notified and within a matter of hours had found the house where the kidnapped man was being held. As police arrived to surround the house, they realised the gang together with the victim were leaving the property. Fearing he was being moved to another location or was about to be harmed, officers moved in on the gang immediately, making five arrests. Police say four of the detained have experience in weapons handling and military operations.

Museum calls for help SPAIN’S national art museum has called on the public to help find a place depicted in one of its paintings. Researchers at the Prado Museum in Madrid appealed to people to help find what is featured in Cantabrian painter Agustin Riancho’s Landscape. The appeal was picked up by Andaluciabased Palaeontology student Luis Collantes who retweeted it.
The post later went viral and several Twitter users suggested it depicted the Saja Valley in Cantabria. Collantes said it could also show the Salto del Gitano in Extremadura’s Monfrague National Park. Other suggestions included the River Esla in Castilla y Leon, the River Cabriel in Castila-La Mancha, Aliaga in Aragon and the Despeñaperros Natural Park in Jaen Province, Andalucia.

Footballer causes death crash JOAO MALECK, a Sevilla Atletico footballer, was involved in a traffic accident that killed two newly-weds. The accident occurred while the 20-year-old player was speeding in Zapopan (Mexico) and rammed the rear of the car belonging to a young couple who had married only the day before. According to early reports in the Mexican media, Maleck was over the drink-driving limit when the accident occurred. He was first taken in custody to a health centre for medical attention and later to the Zapopan police station. “We demand that he feels the full force of the law for irresponsibly taking the lives of two innocent people,” said the local mayor, Pablo Lemus.

Somebody’s goat is missing VALENCIA City’s Local Police are seeking the owner of a goat found wandering along one of the city’s busiest streets. The discovery has since been announced on the Valencia force’s social media pages, but if it is not claimed the goat will be taken to the Centre de Animales Exoticos in the Nazaret neighbourhood.
Squabbles at EU summit THE US urged Spain to lead the EU in diplomatic negotiations with Venezuela and Cuba during the EU Summit in Madrid last week. The American Ambassador in Spain has accused the Nicolas Maduro regime of stealing more than three billion dollars of public funds and signing an agreement with Russia. The Ambassador and the US foreign office have urged Spain to put pressure on Maduro by offering military aid to his rival Juan Guaidó and freezing the dictator’s assets.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card. The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112. In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need. It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car. And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff. National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112. The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian. Once the telephone report is made,
claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report. The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062. Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092. And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence. For an ambulance (ambulancia) and health emergencies, call 061 or 112, and in the case of a fire call the fire brigade (cuerpo de bomberos) on 061 or 112. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24- hour helpline 900 100 333.

Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and current post occupant Jeremy Hunt have set out their stall on Brexit ahead of Monday July 22’s ballot of Conservative party members. It comes as the Labour opposition continues to grapple with its Brexit approach, with leader Jeremy Corbyn facing mounting pressure to adopt a clear position. Johnson and Hunt’s supporters played down the prospect of a no-deal after Hunt said he would be prepared to leave without an agreement but would do so with a ‘heavy-heart.’ Hunt added he would set aside about €6.7 billion to deal with a nodeal. McDonnell told Sky News he would publicly back remain, but was willing to wait for Corbyn to build a consensus on one policy. Labour currently supports putting Brexit to a vote but has not said which side it would back. A general election remains the party’s preferred option.
Ambassador talks tourism THE recovery of rival holiday destinations will have more of an impact on British tourists opting to travel to Spain than Brexit will, according to Britain’s Ambassador to Spain. Simon Manley said at an event organised by the Madrid Business Forum that the years since the 2016 Brexit referendum have seen record numbers of British tourists holidaying to Spain.

COUNT DOWN: Congress will vote on a PSOE government this month.
MEMBERS of the acting leftleaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government are aiming to form a coalition this month as the countdown to an investiture vote begins this week. Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said PSOE’s investiture was the only political option after it won the most seats in April’s election, but fell short of a majority. “We will be clear about what basis we want to lead the country on,” Calvo said. She spoke as Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with President of the Congress of Deputies Meritxell Batet to fix a date for the investiture vote. Sanchez and PSOE are courting smaller parties in Congress to get the 176 votes they need to

That means they will have to bring other parties into the fold which could open the door for them to demand government appointments as well. Comments from other leading PSOE figures hint the party is losing patience and is anxious to form a government sooner rather than later. PSOE spokesperson Adriana Lastra said her party wanted ‘responsibility’ from Podemos after Iglesias suggested he might try to stall the government’s investiture until September. “This isn’t Game of Thrones,” Lastra said. Internal factors in Podemos also mean backing a PSOE government is not a straightforward move. The party’s haemorrhaging of votes in recent elections has created pressure for them to find their own identity rather than throw their lot in with PSOE. Sanchez and PSOE figures have not ruled out calling fresh elections if the deal falls through.

Historic artefact returned A DESK used by the last president of the Spanish Republic to sign his resignation letter following his defeat in the Civil War is to be returned to Spain. France is set to present Spain’s Secretary of State for Global Spain Irene Lozano with Manuel Azaña’s desk when she visits Collongessous-Saleve today (Thursday). The government’s Global Spain department said: “Spain’s democratic memory is an element of its reputation abroad.” Azaña spent the first months of his exile in the French town following the defeat of the Second Republican government at the hands of former dictator Francisco Franco in 1939. He was previously Spain’s prime minister from 1931 to 1933 and took office as president shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in May 1936. He died in Montauban in France on November 3, 1940.

600 people evacuated SIX people were taken to hospital, 30 treated for smoke inhalation and 600 evacuated during a hotel fire in Mallorca. Firefighters from Mallorca, Llucmajor, Calvia and Inca stations joined colleagues from Palma, as well as Local Police and medics at 5am on Tuesday. They were called to the three-star Whala Beach Hotel, in Calle Miramar, S'Arenal, after a fire broke out in one of the rooms. Customers and hotel workers were evacuated as firefighters tackled the blaze. By around 8.30am the fire had been extinguished and some cus-

King’s Panama trip SPAIN’S King Felipe has praised ties between his country and Panama during a visit for the Latin American country’s presidential inauguration ceremony. The monarch said the history of Spain could not be understood without Latin America during a speech on Sunday the day before Laurentino Cortizo’s swearing in as president. The king’s visit came as Panama City celebrates 500 years since its founding. “In these 500 years Panama has not ceased to be a necessary interconnection in the world,” he said.

Stockholders oust founders
SHAREHOLDERS of the Codere gambling company formally ousted its president and CEO and vice-president at its annual general meeting. Stockholders voted to replace Jose Antonio and Luis Javier Martinez Sampedro with Alberto Manzanares and Fernando Sempere, according to information given to Spain’s National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) regulator. Norman Sorensen has taken office as president. The Martinez Sampedro brothers, who founded Codere, said they are considering legal action. It comes as the company posted net losses of €9.4 million during the 2018 financial year.

Billions owed in tax bills A TOTAL of 4,028 Spanish taxpayers owe more than €14.1 billion, according to the Tax Agency which found there were 6.7 per cent less debtors than last year. Tax Agency figures found the total amount owed to the Treasury was 7.8 per cent less than last year. It comes as the agency published its list of debtors who owe more than €1 million following tax returns for the last financial year. Companies linked to the construction and property sectors were among the individuals, entities and firms with the highest outstanding debts.
By Joe Gerrard Many of those companies were left with hefty tax bills after earnings were hit following the property market crash in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Reyel Urbis owed the Treasury €353.2 million after paying off around €8 million over the previous year. Martinsa-Fadesa, who’s folding led to the biggest bankruptcy case in Spain at the time, still owes €50.3 million. Figures on the list included Rodrigo Rato, former deputy prime minister to Jose Maria Aznar. Rato owes more than €1 million to
the Treasury and is currently in prison for his part in the ‘Black’ corruption scandal. Nueva Rumasa, one of the firms owned by the Ruiz Mateos family of tycoons, owes €8.9 million. Former Real Madrid President Lorenzo Sanz owes about €1.35 million. Two subsidiaries of the Andaluciabased Abengoa Group, Abengoa Abenewco and Abengoa Energia, owe more than €2 million and €1.1 million respectively. Footballer Daniel Alves and artist Miguel Bose were among those who cleared their debts as of this year.
THE Basque Country-based Tubos Reunidos steelmaker has unveiled plans to make €40 million in earnings excluding tax and financial deductions (EBITDA) by 2021. The company said Plan 40 aimed to boost partnerships with other firms, suppliers and customers. No jobs will be axed under the plan, the firm added. Tubos Reunidos currently has an order book of €128 million, company figures presented at its annual shareholder meeting show. It comes as the company recently closed a deal with its creditors to refinance debts amounting to €351 million.

FORECASTS: LetterOne hopes to boost Dia’s sales.
Dia owner’s high hopes THE Dia supermarket chain will have net sales figures of between €7 billion and €7.2 billion, according to forecasts included in its new owner’s business plan. Private equity firm LetterOne, which bought the struggling supermarket chain earlier this year, said sales would approach 2018 levels in 2020 before rising each year until 2023. Dia’s owners said new lines of financing and capital investments would help to consolidate the company’s position and make it viable in the long term. It comes after losses of almost €352.6 million in 2018 created doubt about the future of Dia until it changed hands.

Wine exports THE amount of Spanish-made wine sold abroad was 706.6 million litres, a year-on-year rise of 7 per cent according to the Spanish Observatory of the Wine Market (OEMV) which found earnings fell by 7.7 per cent.
Incomes back at pre-crisis levels AVERAGE earnings in Spain stood at €11,412 a year in 2017, the first time in nine years the figure has been higher than pre-crisis levels according to a new study. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) found average earnings increased by 3.1 per cent from 2016 to 2017. It was the first time earnings were above 2008’s average of €11,318. That year saw the
global financial crisis break out which plunged Spain, Europe and much of the world into recession. The INE found household incomes averaged at €28,417 in 2017. That figure is still below the more than €30,000 average recorded in 2009. About 10.4 per cent of households said they faced financial difficulty towards the end of the month in 2018, up 1.1 per cent year-on-year.

Euro and US dollar pressured, pound flounders due to Brexit

Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.87 to £0.89 EUR/USD: Up from $1.11 to $1.12 Despite rising bets that the European Central Bank (ECB) would likely take a more dovish stance on Eurozone monetary policy, the euro put in a much stronger performance earlier in June, climbing against weaker rivals. The euro then rebounded strongly as its rival the US dollar tumbled. However, as global trade tensions continued to worsen and key Eurozone data fell short of forecasts, investors became concerned that the ECB was not dovish enough about the economic outlook. That changed this week, when ECB President Mario Draghi indicated that the bank would loosen monetary policy if inflation did not improve. This week’s Eurozone inflation report also fell short of expectations
EUROZONE INFLATION: Fell short of expectations month-on-month. month-on-month. The euro slipped today, but its gains were limited as the more dovish ECB stance wasn’t entirely surprising either. The euro may have room to advance again if the US dollar remains weak, or if upcoming major Eurozone ecostats show that the economy is recovering more strongly. Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.13 to €1.11
GBP/USD: Down from $1.27 to $1.25 The pound has easily been among the worst-performing major currencies over the past month or so. While the pound’s losses have slowed since the end of May, it continues to weaken as no-deal Brexit concerns resurface. Brief periods of support offered by signs of UK economic strength have been short-lived, with a lot of major
UK data showing that economic activity remains limited by Brexit uncertainties. The main focus for pound investors this month has been the Conservative Party leadership contest, which officially began last week and will run into July. Hard Brexit advocate Boris Johnson is the frontrunner, and he has indicated he would rather embrace a nodeal Brexit than delay the process

again to secure a deal with the EU. Developments in the leadership contest and how they may influence the pound outlook are likely to dominate pound movement in the coming weeks. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.78 to £0.79 USD/EUR: Unmoved at €0.89 After a particularly strong May, the US dollar (USD) has seen wide fluctuations in June. Earlier in the month, rising protectionist rhetoric from Donald Trump combined with signs of weakness in the US economy led to a surge in expectations that the Federal Reserve would be pressured to cut interest rates over the next year. While speculation that these rate cut expectations were overdone helped the US dollar to recover against a weak pound (GBP) and euro (EUR) in the middle of the month, there is still potential for the US currency to fall further. Investors are anticipating the Federal Reserve’s June policy decision, as well as other major US ecostats that could influence the outlook for the Fed and the US dollar.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT DELIGHTED to report that at the time of writing my lovely family is gathering to celebrate the arrival of my eighth decade. My estranged spouse Pauline, with whom I remain good friends, was one of those coming from Ireland accompanied by my son David. They were flying with easyJet and Pauline was travelling for the first time on her new Irish passport. All initially went well at Belfast International and, with bags duly checked in, they presented themselves at the boarding gate. Some friends of Pauline went through first, closely followed by my son. Pauline subsequently offered up her passport and boarding card to the young lady at the desk - and that’s when the problems began. Scrutinising the passport the ground crew member turned to Pauline and to her complete surprise informed her that the name on her passport didn’t match the one on her boarding card. She than pointed out although the passport displayed the name of Pauline Graham, (her married name) the boarding card said Pauline Devine. Although somewhat taken aback, but undeterred, Pauline then showed her that on the passport’s adjoining ‘remarks’ page the Embassy had typed in ‘Birth certificate name Pauline Devine.’ Up to then the exchanges had been fairly pleasant and low key, but overhearing the discussion

another ground crew member then decided to move into the conversation. And she was ‘one of those!’ Apparently holding more authority than the first girl, she proceeded to snatch the Passport and in extremely loud and overbearing tones, not only informed Pauline that she would not be al-
lowed to board the plane, but sneeringly added that the information on the remarks page had in ‘no way been printed by the Embassy’ and was ‘even in a crooked line.’ Needless to say Pauline was now utterly embarrassed and completely taken aback. This un-
pleasant member of staff was, in front of a line of passengers, actually accusing her of illegally tampering with her own passport. It got worse. She then curtly told Pauline - ‘Pay us £80 and we’ll let you board the flight.’ Pauline naturally asked her to explain the reason. ‘Name change fee’ snapped the woman. With hackles now rising and not at all satisfied with this curt explanation, Pauline then informed her that she didn’t in fact have £80. My son David, on hearing the confrontation had now returned to the gate. The women promptly asked him if he had £80. When he said that he hadn’t, David then added they had to get on as they were en route to celebrate his Dad’s birthday and that all their friends were already on the plane? ‘Ring them then’ snapped the woman. ‘Get one of them to come back and pay the £80.’ With this suggestion utterly out of the question and tempers becoming decidedly frayed, Pauline now realised that they could now quite easily miss the flight and possibly even my birthday. She decided to abandon her principles and, even though the reasons were still not clear, reluctantly carded the £80 and was finally allowed to board. Alarm bells in Waterloo CASSANDRA NASH A WEEKLY LOOK - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene
ARTUR MAS, sometime president of Cataluña hinted at a return to politics once he can hold public office again early next year. M a s o rg a n i se d a n in d ep en den c e r e f e r e n d u m in 2 0 1 4 , a lesser affair than the October 1 effort of 2017 which led to the brief and inconclusive UDI of October 27. It earned Mas a trial and a €36,500 fine, while barring him from public office. Ever-wily, he has kept a low profile and bided his time. Much of what has happened in Cataluña would never have occurred if Mas had not been obliged to hand over to Carles Puigdemont, now ensconced in comfort and martyred self-exile in Waterloo.
He became president in 2016 only because the antisystem CUP party refused to back Mas’s investiture. If Mas makes a comeback the outcome is anybody’s guess, but it could be that the understudy has to hand back his starring role and re-
turn to the wings.
A personal matter THIS time it is Albert Rivera’s turn to say ‘No means no’ and insist that Ciudadanos will not assist Pedro Sanchez’s investiture. Not everybody inside his party is
THE Supreme court increased La Manada’s sentence from nine to 15 years on appeal. TO the Editor Now there’s nothing us Brits like more than a good whinge. So here’s my tuppence worth: It’s too hot, too many tourists, too much ‘foreign’ food, the coffee and the food come out lukewarm at best, too much late night partying, too many fireworks, the sausages are pants, the Spanish don’t always speak English, there’s too many French, too many Germans, the Spanish drivers are terrible, you can only get lager, the crisps aren’t the same, the restaurants don’t open until late, the newspapers are expensive and often a day late, they don’t show cricket on the television, there’s too many bank holidays, the shops don’t open on a Sunday, the police aren’t friendly, there’s too much paperwork… I miss England, as then I would really have something serious to whinge about! African migrants HI Leapy Thanks for your great articles. I see in the letter section a reader thinks Spain should give all the arriving African migrants a job, house and anything else they might need. Why do people in Europe think it is their responsibility to do this. Most of the migrants are sub-Saharan Africans whose governments are to blame for their circumstances. Also do they not realise that by encouraging them the current trickle will turn into a flood which will change Spain beyond recognition and not for the better. Keep up the good work. Regards. THE G20 summit wrapped up in Osaka, Japan on Saturday. Decisions taken there and exchanges between leaders offered telling clues on the state of international relations. All except the US reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Climate Accords. Strong environmental positions from Spain’s acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Britain’s Theresa May ahead of the summit were also encouraging. But international commitments to cut emissions appear hollow when they do not include the world’s second-worst polluter. Exchanges with leaders were also watched closely. A video appearing to show US President Donald Trump pointing out Sanchez’s chair and telling him to sit down was seen as a snub. Other reports said the much-maligned president told Sanchez he ‘loved’ Spain, although his sincerity on matters of the heart is questionable. A lesser reported on but perhaps more interesting exchange saw Sanchez warmly greet Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and de factor ruler Mohamed Bin Salman. The Spanish defence industry’s dealings with the Saudis may have led Sanchez to offer the hand of friendship. But ample evidence linking Bin Salman to journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s killing and his country’s devastating military intervention in Yemen make such encounters difficult to watch. Smiling with a leader whose warplanes continue to drop bombs on innocent people does not make for progressive leadership.

Rubbish piles up as refuse collection strike drags on People have to have the right to protest if they’re being taken advantage of and the fact it’s ‘inconveniencing’ us is their only way to get the council to the negotiating table. I imagine they can’t possibly be getting any kind of pay while they’re striking though, so they’ll be left with no option but to continue working for peanuts. At least the streets will be clean. Watermelon Slim (William P Homans III), guitarist and harmonica player grew up in North Carolina 70 years ago and was immersed in blues and gospel from an early age. With 13 albums released over a period of some 45 years, he is currently touring his most recent, which was released this year.

How confident are you? ROBERT SHALLIS CONFIDENCE is not a personality trait, it’s a skill that can be acquired through learning. The more you practice being confident the more naturally it will come; think of it as exercising a muscle. It’s the ability to be able to move from a thought to taking action, coupled with the willingness to try. Lack of confidence can hold us back from what we really want to do in life. Our thoughts and wishes remain just that if action is never taken. We are not born shy or with lack of confidence no more than we are born with unlimited amounts of confidence. We have simply acquired the habit of being so during our early years which creates our framework and our reality. Many people have lack confidence because they add their own assumptions and opinions to the facts. For example: ‘My boss is really mean, he’ll never give me a pay rise, why ask for one?’ Well the fact is yes, your boss may be mean, but it’s only your opin-

ion that he won’t give you a pay rise. Your opinions are only ‘your’ opinions and not a true reflection of what is actually real. This way of self-sabotage will only add to your lack of self-confidence and keep you from improving on your life. The fear of the result is what holds many of us back. You imagine the worst and therefore don’t act on something that could make a
significant difference in your life. Being confident isn’t about becoming an extrovert and being more vocal, it’s about facing your challenges and fears and courageously breaking through that invisible wall. Many extroverts may appear confident on the outside but they don’t always say what they really mean because they are not confident on the
inside. They fear criticism so do not speak their truth, their personal fear is just hidden in a different way. So, if you really want to become that new confident you, start off by practising small acts of courage each day. Look at something that you know you should or would like to do that would normally instil a little fear. It can be something as small as paying your
scary grumpy old boss a compliment instead of assuming he’ll rip your head off!! Each time you overcome a fear by acting upon it, it will slowly increase your confidence. Slowly start to step up and face your larger fears as you start seeing your confidence grow. Eventually you will start seeing more success and stop focusing on your negative assumptions and past failures. This new found skill will start to serve you very well, and as time passes, remember to keep exercising it. To stay fit and healthy you need to stick to a regime, confidence skills require the same, so don’t stop, and keep going. By being persistent you’ll be demonstrating faith in yourself. The more faith you have the more persistent you will become. Eventually, it will become habitual and replace your old habits of doubt and fear. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest once said “It’s not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” Don’t let lack of self-confidence be your unclimbed mountain, conquer it and you’ll reach summits you would never have thought possible before.

And he only needs me to send him £150 so he can prepare the parcel to send me the money! What, you’ve got an uncle in Nigeria, too? The one who needed money when stranded and mugged in London, losing all his cash and credit cards? And an aunt too? The one who’s always sending you those nice emails? Isn’t surprising how so many of us have relatives in Nigeria - aren’t we just one big happy family? Every day, millions receive these bogus ‘419’ emails (so-called after a section of Nigeria’s legal code) promising millions. They’re such obvious scams it’s hard to imagine anyone falls for them. Yet police estimate that US citizens alone are annually conned out of $200m plus. And the British National Crimi-

Other versions play on your loneliness, charity or naïveté (you can’t win a lottery you didn’t enter). Fake job offer, orphan, dead bank customer, cancer patient: same weaponised scam. I’ve written before about this, but if repeated publicity saves just one more person from being conned... Finally, 5,000 people were the victims of holiday booking fraud last year, with their total losses amounting to £7m. Travel associa-
tion ABTA said victims lost an average of £1,380 each, having bought bogus airline tickets, accommodation or organised tours. It said scammers were using increasingly sophisticated methods to target people looking for ‘good deals.’ Just remember: if it sounds too good to be true... I just need a yes or no MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man THIS week the news is full of who’s going to be the new UK PM. At the time of writing it is looking like it has to be Boris, but there is a chance it might not because of his punch up with his girlfriend, so it might be Hunt. I actually don’t care who it is, but it does p**s me off the way these people conduct themselves. Boris refuses to discuss the goings on at his girlfriend’s flat because it’s nothing to do with the great British unwashed, but the next day releases a picture of them having a nice little drink somewhere. The only problem is that picture was taken sometime before and for some reason the BJ publicity machine thought noone would notice that his hair is long in that picture and on the day of the punch up it was short. Just another BJ lie. The man is a disgrace. Forget about the lies he told about Brexit. Johnson was hired by The Times, through family connections, and fired for
a front-page fabrication within months. In November 2004, Boris Johnson was shadow arts minister under Michael Howard, Conservative Vice-Chair, and editor of the Spectator when it was reported in multiple tabloids that he had a years-long affair with one of the magazine’s columnists, which had resulted in two terminated pregnancies. He denied it and when it was proven, he lied. He was asked to resign, but refused. So he was sacked again, for dishonesty! The man’s just a pathological liar. But my biggest grump with him and, to be honest, with all politicians is their refusal to answer a direct question with a simple yes or no. In BJ’s case it’s even worse. He won’t even go on TV and debate his policies with Hunt. If I was conducting an agreed interview, I would ask him a question and say I just need a yes or no answer. If he went off on a waffle fest, I’d just say, OK interview over BJ, on yer bike son. If you can’t give a simple answer to a simple question, I’m not wasting my time with you. And, I would do that with every one of them. Or maybe they should all preface every answer with ‘I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate me’ then everyone can make their own minds up.

A city full of charm A HUB of Catalan culture in its own right, Girona is packed to the brim with museums, galleries and stunning buildings. The historic centre built by the city’s abundant wealth during medieval times has been well preserved over the centuries, surviving wars, sieges and revolutions. The best way to see the city is to take a walk along the medieval walls, known as the Passeig de la Muralla, that border the city centre and offer great views. Girona has one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in all of Europe called El Call, which
is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets that look just how they would have 500 years ago when the Jewish population occupied this area of the city. Another highlight that should not be missed is Girona Cathedral, which has a picturesque long staircase leading to the entrance that was used as a location to film Game of Thrones. The city has its own small airport but there is also a high-speed train service that links Girona to the Catalan capital of Barcelona, so it makes a perfect destination for a quick day trip.

PETER PURVEY THIS is one of the most feared things heard by sailors in the past. Fire in the middle of the ocean is one thing, but fire in one’s own home today when there is an organised fire service should not be too much of a problem, especially when one assumes there are laws about using fireproof materials, smoke alarms, sprinklers and fire doors and inspectors to carry this out. But the cry ‘fire’ always strikes fear into one’s heart. As I watched the burning of Grenfell tower block I could not believe I would ever see a scene like this in Britain. I tried to think back to similar catastrophes and could only come up with the Twin Towers. On the silver screen, of course, we were enthralled by ‘The Towering Inferno’ with a great performance by Fred Astaire. That was probably the nearest many of us came to see the portrayal of a life-like drama of a tower block fire. I have experienced two hotel fires. The first occurred in New York a few days before Xmas.

‘Fire down below!’ I was sleeping on the 43rd floor of a 5th Avenue hotel; it was snowing lightly and the temperature near to zero. At around three in the morning all the fire bells started ringing and loudspeakers on all floors told guests to evacuate using only the stairs. I looked out of the window. The monstrous fire engine blocking the street below looked a fraction of the size of a Dinky Toy and the people pouring out onto the snowy street, looked smaller than ants. Then I noticed smoke creeping under my bedroom door, so, very reluctantly put on some clothes and with a wet cloth handy, joined others walking down to street level. We had passed the 30th floor when we heard the voices and clatter of feet coming up towards us, so we waited. It appeared all was well! A cook had left the gas on under a large pan of oil which had eventually ignited. The Hotel’s super efficient air conditioning system had immediately begun circulating the smoke all over the hotel. A bit frightening but it could have

The road to rescue is rocky! ANOTHER two rescued equines arrived at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre last week, but as always there were many more calls for help regarding such animals. EHCRC already has nearly 120 rescued horses, ponies and donkeys and it is logistically impossible for them to take every animal that people ask them to. They have to focus their attention on those animals most in need and in conjunction with the Police and Guardia Civil. Hence reporting cases of abuse or abandonment ie making a ‘denuncia’ to the Guardia Civil/Police is paramount (details of how to do this can be found on EHCRC website below). EHCRC functions without any governmental funding and relies on donations, volunteers, their charity shops and the 24/7 unrelenting drive of the Co-Founders, Sue and Rod Weeding. The first of these rescues is a darling little pony.
BARRY DUKE ANYONE with an atom of sense knows that if you buy eggs you place them at the top of your shopping bag or trolley and not at the bottom where they will inevitably be cru sh e d b y o t h e r p u rchases. And that’s exactly what I did last Friday afternoon after bu y i n g a t r a y o f 2 4 . Then disaster struck. A little old lady lost her balance on the bus in which I was travelling and crashed into my shopping bag. There was a sickening crunch. When I got home, I knew the bag would be a horror, but I u n d e r e st i m a t e d th e sheer scale of the mishap. All but one of the eggs had broken, and a week’s shopping beneath was soaked in yolk and albumen. This was the third of a number of incidents that set me thinking that I’d somehow a n n o y e d E r i s, th e Greek goddess of strife and

EHCRC received a phone call from URMA, the Local Police in Callosa de Segura - they had received an anonymous call to say there was a little pony in an appalling state. They phoned EHCRC and as always Rod dropped everything to go there straight away. She is the sweetest little thing, about nine years old, she is covered in sores with dreadful skin problems, she is very malnourished and her feet are in an awful state. Dorothea, their equine vet, has given her a full check up and she is receiving the care she so justly deserves. The Police want Dorothea’s report as they are determined to take this case to Court. Another step forward in animal welfare. The second rescue is an a d o r a b l e d o n k e y, n o w n a m e d Luisa. The Centre received a call from Protectora Pels Pèls Crevillent, an animal organisation from Cre-
villente in the Alicante Province. The owners of a property had called them in the morning after they had found a donkey, abandoned and tied to the fence of their house, in very poor condition with a huge lump under her tummy. Pels Pèls don’t have the f a c i l i t i e s t o k e e p a d o n k e y, s o they asked EHCRC for help. The Hospital Veterinario San Vicente in Alicante, agreed to do the operation and she is now recovering well. Normally, I get loads of co mmen ts b en ea th e a c h item I post, but I noticed that several days’ posts had not attracted a single comment. Puzzled, I checked the moderation folder, and found that several hundred w e re la n g u is h in g th ere , waiting approval. Further investigation revealed that Disqus, through w h ich all c o mmen ts a re fu n n e lle d , h a d - w ith o ut warning - erected a barrier against hundreds of ‘restricted’ words: words like ‘beer,’ ‘monster,’ ‘idiot,’ ‘pot,’ ‘crack,’ ‘gay,’ ‘panties’ and, most most un-

shopping, I set about washi ng di shes at ar ound 11.30pm. I then got distracted by a phone call. As I was speaking, I became aware of water lapping at my feet.

Water had seeped into our cooker and tripped the main fuse. So by torchlight and standing in an inch of water, I had t o get i nt o t he electrics of the cooker and dry everything off. An hour later I managed to restore the electric supply, and it took 90 minutes to mop up the water. Then I knocked my mobile phone into the filled-tothe-brim mop bucket. Of course by then my plan to sit down in front of the telly with a steak dinner was out of the question. So, I chose a curry pot noodle instead. Just as I sat down to eat it, I heard a rending crash. A large clock had fallen off the wall, and there were shards of glass everywhere. New Tesla pickup announced IN a recent hour-long podcast Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he’s aiming to price the company’s new pick-up truck at under $50,000 (€44,000) and have it outperform the industry’s best-selling vehicle, the Ford F series, but with a futuristic sci-fi design. Musk said that the new vehicle will combine the functionality of a conventional truck and assured everyone that the new vehicle will be better than Ford’s F150 but additionally, he commented, that it will be a better sports car than a standard Porsche 911. “It’s kind of like a ‘Blade Runner’ truck, that’s the idea. It’s not going to be for everyone. When we unveil this thing, there’ll be some people who are like, ‘Oh, that doesn’t look like a truck; I don’t want to buy it.’ It’s like when they came out with automobiles, people were like, ‘Oh, I like a horse and carriage.’ Sure, OK, you can stick with your horse and carriage, but you’re going to get an automobile later. You just don’t know it.’ Last year on Twitter, Musk claimed the pick-up will come with dual-motor all-wheel drive, as standard, a suspension that adjusts dynamically for load and ‘crazy torque.’ He also said it will have power outlets to accommodate heavyduty, 240-volt power tools. Musk said he hoped that full details of the truck will be revealed this summer.

by Nick Fletcher DS AUTOMOBILES is a fastgrowing car brand - the premier division of the French PSA Group which includes Citroen, Peugeot and Vauxhall-Opel - and DS is making quite an impact with its stylised cool-image designs which really turn heads. The new DS3 Crossback is a fine example a compact SUV which has a genuine wow-factor and grabs immediate attention. Available in petrol, diesel and all-electric form, this model competes in a tough sector which includes the VW TCross, Audi A2 and Mini Countryman and while they all have their own plus-points, the DS wins on sheer visual impact. DS prices start at €24,186 (£21,555) but to get more standard kit you have to move up range and my recent test model
was a top-spec Performance Line version priced at €30,806 (£27,455). It has the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine giving a hefty 155 hp and is mated to an eight-speed auto gearbox. The steering is light so feedback is rather limited but you still get a sense of grip and composure and feel fully in control. Ride comfort is good unless you are on very rough surfaces

Cabin accommodation offers adequate head and leg room front and rear and while the 350-litre boot is not among the largest in the class, it is still fine for most everyday needs and does expand to 1,050 litres with the rear seats down. Where this DS outshines its rivals is its street-image the exterior design of flowing curves and striking features is an outstanding example of famous French flair and that extravagance continues in the cabin where beautifully crafted detailing of the dashboard, doors and gearshift make you feel you are in something that is quite special. And that feeling is particularly important in the SUV sector where a distinctive and exclusive image is often a key factor.

Spain on top of Europe By Dilip Kuner SPAIN looks to have a new generation of potential world-beaters after they beat Germany 2-1 to become champions of Europe for the fifth time. They gained revenge for a loss to the same opposition in Krakow two years ago to equal Italy’s record for the most titles in the UEFA competition. The Spanish players started confidently with some crisp passing and excellent possession play that left the German youngsters chasing shadows, at least initially. Luis de la Fuente’s men soon took advantage to open the scoring, with Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz taking a pass from Mikel Oyarzabal in the seventh minute to beat the German keeper with a powerful left-foot shot from the edge of the area. After Fabian’s goal, the match settled down with both teams enjoying periods of domination, although there was a lack of clear opportunities. Spain just about edged the rest of

First-time winner at Valderrama THE Andalucian Masters at Valderrama saw South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout seal his first European Tour title with a six shot victory. While he had a slight wobble on the final day when he saw his five shot lead hauled back to three at one stage, his victory never really looked in doubt. His closing 71 saw him finish at 10 under par and means he now has a place in the Open along with Frenchman Mike Lorenzo-Vera and Spaniard Adri Arnaus who were part of a five-way tie for second. It also meant he became only the third winner of the event after Graeme McDowell (2010), and tournament host Sergio Garcia (2011, 2017, 2018). YAMAHA are celebrating a hard-fought win at the TT Circuit Assen after Maverick Viñales delivered a strong race performance to beat Marc Marquez into second place. But the team’s other ride r, Va l e n t i n o R o s s i crashed out on lap five, taking out Takaaki Nakagami with him. Viñales had a good start from P2, but a wobble in turn one looked to have cost him. He fell back to fourth, where he stayed at the completion of the first lap. There was a small scrap between him and Marc Marquez early on, until the n u m b e r- 1 2 r i d e r n o t i c e d the three front men getting a w a y, p r o m p t i n g h i m t o make his move. As he chased the race leaders, frontrunner Álex Rins crashed his Suzuki. Viñales took full advantage as he passed Joan Mir, and then the battle with Marquez and Fabio Quartararo who finished second and third respectively - for top spot began in earnest. The 24-year-old was in third place for a while and was having a good look behind Marquez with 14 laps to go, deciding carefully where he would make his move. He first led the race on lap 16, but Honda’s Marq u e z p r o v e d d i ff i c u l t t o shake, as you would expect from the championship leader. With nine laps to go, the Yamaha rider ran wide going into turn one and fell back to second place. It wasn’t long before he retook the lead - in fact it was on the same lap. From

MAX VERSTAPPEN took his sixth career GP win and his second consecutive Austrian Grand Prix victory after a storming drive. He needed all his skill and determination to steer his Red Bull to GREAT DRIVE: Max Verstappen swept to victory. first position at the team’s home track following a dreadful start. Verstappen’s march to his sixth career win, the team’s 60th and the first for power unit partner Honda in 13 years looked scuppered at the off. When the lights went out the Dutchman’s RB15 bogged down and he was immediately swamped by the cars around him on the grid. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc powered away in the lead ahead of Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen dropped to P7. Ahead of the first round of pit stops Leclerc had built an almost five-second advantage over Bottas, who triggered what would be for most of the leading pack a single pit stop. Bottas made a clean stop, but there was no such luck for Vettel. The Ferrari driver’s crew were not ready with a set of hard tyres and the German was forced to sit stationary for six seconds as a front left wheel was located and fitted. Leclerc made his stop at the end of the following lap and he emerged in P3 behind new leader Hamilton and Verstappen. Hamilton pushed too hard and damaged his front wing. At the end of lap 30 he pitted for hard tyres and a new wing. The stop saw Hamilton stand still in his pit box for 11 seconds. Red Bull responded and brought Verstappen in for a set of hard tyres and he emerged four seconds clear of Hamilton, in fourth place. The Dutch ace quickly began to close up to third-placed Vettel and on lap 47 he closed to within DRS range of the Ferrari driver. On lap 50 he made it past, then took Bottas six laps later. What followed was a titanic battle between Leclerc and Verstappen. With three laps remaining the latter made a move down the inside into turn three. The pair went alongside each other in the corner and banged wheels. Leclerc went wide on the exit of the corner and Verstappen was through. Verstappen’s overtaking move on Leclerc was put under investigation by the stewards, but it was eventually judged to have been fair and Verstappen’s win stood. Vettel had also been on the move during the closing stages and he passed Hamilton to take a solid fourth place after starting from P9. Hamilton was left with fifth place ahead of Lando Norris’ McLaren and Pierre Gasly crossed the line in P7 in his Red Bull to score his seventh points finish of the season to date.

HIGHLY rated Scottish forward Jack Harper has left his ‘home’ team of Malaga to sign a fiveyear deal with La Liga high flyers Getafe. The 23-year-old, who has been capped at U19 and U17 level for his parent’ home nation, was born and brought up in the Fuengirola district of Los Boliches in the Costa del Sol.
He will be the first Scot to play in Spain’s top division since Alan Hutton had a loan spell with Mallorca in 2013.
Getafe - Madrid’s ‘third’ team - finished fifth last year and q u a l i f i e d f o r t h e E u ro p a League, just missing out on a Champion’s League spot after their best ever season.
