Robbed tourists
TRAGIC: Victim named as Freddie Pring.
Fall tragedy by Dilip Kuner A BRITISH tourist killed in a fall from a Magaluf hotel has been named as 20-yearold rugby player Freddie Pring. He was a player for Minehead Barbarians RFC in Somerset. A statement from the club said: “It is with deepest sadness that we have to inform you that one of our own, Freddie Pring, has been involved in an accident abroad and has passed away. “Our love and condolences reach out to everyone that knew Freddie.”
Friends have left many tributes to Mr Pring on social media, many changing their profile pictures to the Minehead Barbarians club logo in memory of him. The tragedy occurred last Friday at about 3am. Locals called emergency services when they saw something fall from a balcony. Local Police arrived to find Mr Pring in a critical condition. Medics gave him immediate aid, but he died at the scene. Police had to wake up the victim’s friends to tell them what had happened. He had been staying with
them at a hotel called the Wave House. He is the first Briton to die from a balcony fall in Mallorca this year, although in the space of a week there were three other similar incidents. An 18-year-old Swedish man was critically injured after plunging two floors on May 31, while a British man, aged 19, escaped with a broken ankle after an eight-metre fall in Punta Ballena on June 5. The following night a 35-year-old German man was badly hurt after falling from a second-floor balcony.
EIGHT Senegalese ‘street sellers’ have been arrested for allegedly robbing tourists last weekend. Police say that they worked in pairs. One would approach their victim to distract them with a hug or a push, while the other would then snatch valuables. The arrested, who are aged between 20 and 36 years, were found to be in possession of allegedly stolen smartphones, SIM cards, wallets, watches, bracelets and a gold chain. Police made the arrests after a series of incidents along Punta Ballena on Saturday and Sunday. One tourist needed medical attention after a fight.
He had accosted a person who robbed him, only to be threatened with a bottle. One police officer also needed to be treated after being injured during the arrests. From next week extra security is being drafted in, with Guardia Civil officers being stationed at the tourist information office. Palma Town Hall has now applied for ex-
clusion orders for the eight arrested people banning them from the area. There have been several cases in recent weeks of tourists being robbed by people purporting to be ‘street vendors.’ Last week a German tourist was hospitalised after being punched to the ground in the early hours of the morning.
