Mojacar PP triumphs THE Popular Party emerged the clear winner in Mojacar in Sunday’s municipal election.

The party led by Rosa Maria Cano increased its absolute majority. PP won 57.67 per cent of the vote, up from 45.9 per cent in 2015. This gives the party an additional seat on the town council, taking the number of PP councillors to eight out of a total 13.

This compares with the Socialist PSOE-Somos coalition’s 39.03 per cent share of the vote, translating into five seats, also up one on four years ago. The United Left was pushed into a distant third, polling just 3.31 per cent.

Voter turnout in the Mojacar election was high, at 71.26 per cent, up from 65.3 per cent in 2015.

Conservative PP holds on to Almeria

By Cathy Elelman THE conservative Popular Party won the most votes in Sunday’s municipal elections in Almeria and remains the governing force on the provincial council.

The PP retains its absolute majority despite the Socialist PSOE gaining more councillors than any other party in the province.

The PP won 41.26 per cent of the provincial vote, translating into 413 councillors. The party came first in big municipalities, including Almeria City, Roquetas de Mar and HuercalOvera.

PP also got the highest number of votes in Mojacar, Macael, Olula del Rio, Oria,

Pulpi, Vera, Vélez-Rubio, Turre and Adra.

PSOE polled 36.53 per cent, which gives it 439 councillors.

It was the most voted for party in Arboleas, Antas, Bedar, Cantoria, Chirivel, Cuevas del Almanzora, Garrucha, Nijar and Zurgena.

The ultra-right Vox party will have representation on the provincial government for the first time, with two deputies, after gaining 7.27 per cent of the

vote. This put the party in fourth position overall, but Vox managed second place in El Ejido, behind PP, and came third in Almeria.

The centre to centre-right Cuidadanos just pipped Vox to third position at provincial level, with 7.29 per cent. It came first in Los Gallardos.

In Albox, the UCIN ((Union of Independent Citizens) won an absolute majority.

In all, 62.62 per cent of the

electorate in the province’s 103 municipalities voted this time around, up from 60.59 per cent in 2015.

Crash report FOUR women were injured when their car collided with a lorry in Roquetas de Mar at midday on Monday. The four, aged 20, 23, 24 and 58, were taken by ambulance to the Aguadulce Sur medical centre.

Earth moves THE National Geographic Institute registered a low intensity earth tremor measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale, five kilometres down, and with its epicentre just four kilometres from Antas, at 11.26pm on Monday night.

Boat rescue GUARDIA CIVIL rescued 26 men of North African origin from an inflatable dinghy intercepted 10 nautical miles south of Almeria on Monday, the Rio Almanzora patrol boat taking the would-be immigrants to Almeria port.

Proposed solutions to irregular properties THE Andalucia government is working on two possible solutions to irregular properties.

Regional Development and Territorial Planning Minister Marifran Carazo revealed details of the proposals at a working meeting with the AUAN housing association and representatives of property owners in Zurgena, Arboleas and Albanchez.

Discussions last week at the Junta de Andalucia’s Government Delegation office in Almeria City covered solutions in towns which, according to AUAN President Maura Hillen “are immersed in a torturous planning labyrinth,” and what she described as “imminent legal reforms that could give a faster way out for irregular houses.”

Carazo said one way to address the unregulated property problem would be through an AFO certificate. This is an alternative form of documentation for houses built in contravention of planning law, which would permit owners to connect to available services like water and electricity and to register their homes.

“To recognise an AFO is to recognise a situation of illegality, only that, but allows access to basic services and to resolve or minimise environmental problems,” the Development minister clarified.

Hillen said the association was “grateful for the great reception given by the Junta” at the meeting, which was also attended by regional Agriculture and Sustainable Development Minister Carmen Crespo and Junta de Andalucia Almeria delegate Maribel Sanchez.

The AUAN president pointed out that most homeowners taking part in the meeting were over 75. She said they explained to the Junta representa-

tives “they had never expected to spend the golden years of their lives in a situation that has lasted more than a decade.”

Hillen maintained “the willingness of the Junta to resolve the planning issues that afflict almost a million homeowners in Andalucia is evident,” and she is confident “the government is working on the issue and giving it priority.”

AUAN has, Hillen said, “offered its cooperation to develop effective and realistic planning solutions on behalf of those trapped in irregular houses, so that the issues can be resolved in a practical way as soon as possible.”

PSOE prevails in European elections THE Socialist PSOE was the most voted for party in the province in Sunday’s European Parliament election, pushing PP into second positon.

PSOE took 35.31 per cent of the vote, up from 32.88 per cent in 2014. PP gained a 30.41 per cent share, down from 35.09 per cent last time. Ciudadanos came third, with 12.14 per cent of the vote, and Vox came fourth, with 11.17 per cent.

The far left Podemos-IU was left trailing in fifth place, securing just 6.63 per cent. Provincial voter turnout for the European election was 61.38 per cent.

Coca catch A STANDARD check on passengers coming off a Madrid flight led to the seizure of more than three kilos of coca leaves.

Guardia Civil found the leaves wrapped in plastic and hidden in the suitcase of a passenger who told officers they had nothing to declare.

The passenger confirmed they were coca leaves. Officers said the leaves contain alkaloids which can be used as a powerful stimulant.

VOLCANIC: The Canary Islands’ Tenerife is home to Mount Teide.

Islands day THIS picture of one of the Canary Islands’ best-known volcanoes comes as the Spanish archipelago celebrates its regional holiday today (Thursday), May 30.

Tenerife’s Mount Teide is almost 3,720 metres high when measured from sea level. If measured from the ocean floor it is about 7,500 metres tall, making it the highest volcano in the world from base to peak outside of Hawaii.

Teide National Park which surrounds the volcano was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

The islands take their name from the Latin Canariae Insulae, which means Islands of the Dogs. The Canary Islands’ flag bears two dogs on its crest.

The Canary Islands is made up of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. There are also six smaller islands including La Graciosa which is home to 658 people.

The islands’ geography is diverse but is famously volcanic.

The archipelago was settled by Berbers from North Africa who became known as Guanches. Spain be-

gan making inroads into the islands from 1402 and achieved complete control when the then Kingdom of Castile subdued Tenerife and La Palma.

Cash crops including sugar cane and tobacco were introduced to the islands, boosting their wealth.

The Canary Islands were granted their Statute of Autonomy in 1982.

The archipelago is the only one of Spain’s autonomous communities to have two capitals, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Old hand THE 9 3 - y e a r- o l d m a y o r o f Chercos was re-elected in Sunday’s municipal elections, his Popular Party winning 131 of the municipality’s 234 votes.

This is Jose Antonio Torres’ seventh term of office, making him one of the longest standing mayors in Spain, and probably the oldest.

Same names ANTONIO and Maria are the most common names in Almeria. National Institute of Statistics findings for 2018 show there are nearly 15,000 Antonios and almost 12,000 Marias.

Francisco and Jose are second and third most typical for men, and Maria Carmen followed by plain Carmen for women.

Heritage investment ALMERIA City’s Alcazaba citadel will receive a €1.6m investment from the Andalucia regional government.

Junta de Andalucia Culture regional minister Paticia del Pozo announced a five-point renovation plan for the monument. Works will focus on the Saliente tower, the Justice gate walls and the north front. There will also be complete upgrades of the electrics, lighting, alarms and security systems.

Runaway robber cuffed GUARDIA CIVIL cuffed a runaway robber following a breakin at a warehouse in El Ejido.

Officers were alerted to a possible robbery after the property’s alarm went off, finding thieves had evidently entered and got away with stolen items.

When a patrol came across a car reversing down a nearby lane it made off.

The driver unsuccessfully tried to cause the officers’ vehicle to crash by breaking rapidly, then sped off, recklessly

zigzagging down the road.

The driver eventually lost control of the car after making a sudden turn onto waste ground and colliding with a mound of stones.

The three occupants of the vehicle ran off in different directions, officers managing to catch up with and detain the 22year-old driver.

A search of the surrounding area the following day led to the discovery of stolen sacks of pesticides in an irrigation canal.

Muggers prey on expats

by Cathy Elelman A MOJACAR businessman claims organised gangs of muggers are preying on expat men after he was targeted four times.

Charles Alman told the Euro Weekly News the first incident was outside his Sundance Spas business in Mojacar Playa last October. A young woman approached him on the pretext of asking if he knew someone. To Charles’ astonishment she wrapped herself around him, making suggestions of a sexual nature.

He pushed her away, and she took off in a waiting car. Minutes later Charles realised his €2,000 gold chain was missing.

“I didn’t tell anyone because I was so embarrassed about falling for it,” he admitted.

“They put their hands on you and you don’t realise what they’re doing because they catch you so off guard.”

Two months ago the muggers set their sights on Charles in another Mojacar street.

“Different girl, but same thing,” he said.

“I told her I was going to call the Guardia Civil and she ran off with another girl.”

Incredibly, muggers went for Charles again later that day in Puerto Rey. A woman tried to get him to open his car window, he thinks as a ploy to get his watch. Last week the muggers had another go with the same tactic outside his shop.

“I thought this is ridiculous,” a clearly angry Charles told EWN.

“I got out the car. I told her I knew what she was doing and was taking her photo and calling the Guardia. She ran into a car in which there were two guys and another girl. One of the guys got out. Luckily one of my employees, a big burly fellow, came out and off they went.”

Gibraltarian Charles has lived in Mojacar for 31 years.

He believes criminal gangs using young females to pick on men of a certain age is ‘rife.’

This time Charles reported

the incidents at Garrucha Guardia station. While there a British man in his late 70’s came in to report a young woman had just snatched his gold Rolex watch. Charles acted as translator for the pensioner, who he said was ‘very shaken up.’

The man told officers he had been sitting in his car at Garrucha port with the door open.

A woman suddenly got in and in fluent English made out she knew him. When he realised she had his watch he struggled with her, but she bit his hand.

“All his fingers were swollen and there were real bite marks,” Charles told EWN. Just like when Charles was targeted, a car pulled up, the assailant got in, and it took off.

Guardia Civil confirmed to EWN they were investigating the theft of the British pensioner’s Rolex. They said the gang had probably identified him as an ‘easy victim.”‘ Nevertheless, they made it clear they do not regard this kind of crime as a particular local problem.

ILLEGAL: Guardia Civil discovered 279 marihuana plants.

Narco flats unplugged FOUR people are under arrest after Guardia Civil uncovered five so-called ‘narco flats’ in Roquetas de Mar. The Guar di a di scovered some 200 illegal connections to the electricity supply, which were being used to power equipment for indoor marihuana plantations in the apartments located in various parts of the municipality. Officers also seized 279 marihuana plants.

Radar up and running A RADAR with the latest technology covering flights over south-east Spain and North Africa is now in operation in Turrillas in the Sierra de Alhamilla.

The new radar services the Sevilla and Barcelona air control centres. It also covers aircraft taking off and landing at Almeria airport and contributes surveillance information to airports in G ranada, Mal aga, Murcia, Melilla and Alicante.

PREPARATIONS are underway for beginning the dig on the site of the medieval town of Bayra in Vera in late summer.

University of Granada archaeologists will carry out the excavations and students will work on the dig.

The project will further the investigation, preservation and promotion of the site of the town, which was levelled by an earthquake in November 1518.

“It is our obligation to preserve and highlight the value of our heritage as a source of the historical knowledge of Vera

municipality,” stressed former Mayor Feliz Lopez at a meeting with the archaeologists.

He continued, “The need to safeguard this rich historicarcheological heritage is not only testament of a common identity, but also as a means of enjoying free time and quality cultural tourism in our municipality.”

The dig will start once the Andalucia regional government finishes processing the necessary permission for working on what is a Cultural Interest site.

Works underway WORKS to improve the road surface and update basic infrastructure on Calle Murillo in Adra are underway.

Water and sewage pipes are being checked and replaced with ones made from more modern, durable materials, and drains with gutters are being installed every 30 metres on both sides of the street.

The works also include improvements to the pavements to make them more even and more attractive.

The nearly €100,000 cost of the project is joint financed by the Almeria provincial council and by Adra local authority.

Teens arrested for break-ins GUARDIA CIVIL arrested two teenagers for breaking into homes in Palomares.

The Guardia believe the 17 and the 18-year-old forced open the door of one property and got in from the terrace to another, making off with TVs, a Tablet, jewellery and

cash. In both cases the young thieves were surprised by neighbours and had to run off. Investigations into the crimes suggested the pair, both from Palomares, could be responsible for a further eight house break-ins in the same area, the Guardia said.

Free Wi-Fi thanks to EU funding SEVERAL municipalities in Almeria are set to get free Wi-Fi in public places thanks to European Union funding.

The municipalities benefiting from the WiFi4EU initiative include Antas, Arboleas and Huercal-Overa.

The European Commission’s Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA) selected 510 municipalities in Spain and 82 in Andalucia to receive vouchers for €15,000 to install free public Wi-Fi connectivity in locations like town halls, libraries, museums, parks and plazas.

NEWS EXTRA Young phone thieves LOCAL POLICE in Almeria City reported the detentions of three youngsters suspected of stealing mobile phones from a city centre shop. Offficers caught up with the three shortly after the robbery, finding stolen mobiles in their vehicle.

Bridge work WORKS on doing up the bridge over the River Adra in the Puente del Rio part of Adra town have got going.

The council said the works would make the bridge safer for pedestrians and traffic.

First art THE future Spanish Realism Museum in Almeria City’s historic centre now has the first sculptures for its collection.

Artists Antonio Lopez and Andres Garcia Ibañez have donated four torsos from the ‘Juventud’ (youth) collection.

LEARNING about Vera’s history is child’s play thanks to a brand new game.

The local council has devised the Leda board game featuring a spiral design with 63 boxes with illustrations relating to the most important points in the municipality’s history.

Tour tourism promotion THE landscapes of the Costa Almeria will be promoted in 64 countries through commercials broadcast during Eurosport’s coverage of the Tour de France.

The provincial council said the aim was to make the most of the enormous popularity of the prestigious event and raise the profile of Almeria as an attractive year-round destination among the channels’ viewers.

“The Tour de France is a great showcase for

showing the whole world the beauty of our province,” commented Provincial Tourism deputy Fernando Gimenez.

“Our landscapes will travel throughout the world once again, hand in hand with a top level cycling competition as it did thanks to the Vuelta Ciclista and the Clasica Ciclista, which were also broadcast on Eurosport.”

The Tourism deputy underlined the number of cycling events held in the province throughout the

year and the number of teams which come to Almeria to train, remarking, “hence we couldn’t miss this opportunity, and continue positioning the Costa Almeria as a top level sports destination.”

The Costa Almeria ads will appear from July 6 until the end of the month, coinciding with the 21 Tour stages. Eurosport will broadcast an average of four hours’ coverage of the event a day in Europe and Asia.

PEOPLE with an intellectual disability will have work opportunities in Vera thanks to an agreement between the council and the Asprodalba association.

The local authority awarded Asprodalba, or the Levante Almeria Association for the Promotion of People with an Intellectual Disability, 75-year con-

cessions to run the botanical garden, the Mediterranean aquarium, the Rural Habitat Museum, a bar kiosk and a plot for staging workshops and other projects.

The move will provide jobs for around 10 people, in positions including waiters, receptionists and activity monitors.

The local authority said the facilities are currently underused due to its difficulties in managing and exploiting them, and the concessions had gone to Asprodalba as it meets all the legal requirements: a non-profit entity, declared of public use, which promotes people with an intellectual disability.

Asprodalba President, Francisco Alonso Martínez, said he was “immensely grateful to the government team for its confidence in this project, which means a great challenge, and one we take on with responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm.

“For the first time we are going to sign an agreement which gives direct employment to people with an intellectual disability, a circumstance which means a substantial leap for us and which demonstrates our path towards full inclusion and integration in society for people with different abilities.”

Outgoing Vera mayor Felix Lopez described the initiative as “one of the most important agreements of my career as a councillor.”

Enlightened employment initiative

ORIGINAL: Local people were invited to have a hand in giving each floral indalo an original design.

Blooming lovely!

INDALOS of flowers filled Mojacar village with the sweet scent of blooms this weekend, along with music and fine wine.

Organised by Mojacar village’s local business association to mark the start of the summer season, this

was the fifth year of the initiative.

Baskets of some 4,000 flowers in all were given out to village businesses and residents to create their own versions of the twometre high floral indalo symbols which brought the

village’s squares to life.

Popular band Efecto Sur gave an open-air concert on Friday evening in Plaza del Fronton, local residents donned traditional costumes, and individual establishments laid on different activities and entertainment.

Wacky Races record THIS year’s Wacky Races Villaricos raised a record €1,518 for worthy causes after all expenses were paid.

The money will be used to fund the travel costs of a local girl who needs to go to Barcelona for an operation. There will be a significant donation to the Villaricos school for either playground or classroom equipment. Money also goes to the three dance groups which performed at the April event.

There are four unclaimed raffle prizes, in-

cluding a one-week stay in a two-bedroom apartment in Villaricos. A full list of winners is available at Bar La Plaza in Villaricos. The prizes will be available up to June 30. If they are not claimed they will be sold at a silent auction in early July at Bar La Plaza.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS Depopulation impact THE number of councillors standing for election in Spain has fallen by 1,220 since 2011 due to the effects of depopulation.

Figures from the Territories Ministry showed 67,010 council seats were contested in last Sunday’s (May 26) local elections. The number is down from 68,230 in 2011.

The drop in councillor numbers highlights the ongoing impact of depopulation on parts of Spain. The issue has not just affected the number of politicians able to stand in certain areas, it has also emerged as central to many parties’ pitch to voters.

Parties including the conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos, the leftist Podemos and the far-right Vox have all vied for votes in ‘Empty Spain.’ Each has promised measures to tackle the effects of depopulation. The exodus of younger workers from small villages and towns has placed a strain on council finances, with fewer taxpayers able to support local infrastructure.

The number of urban areas home to less than 100 people rose by 290 from 2011 to 2019. The problems arising from this is likely to influence politics at all levels for the foreseeable future.

The left-leaning city-focused Mas Madrid, which held the position of mayor with Manuela Carmena, lost one seat leaving it with 19 while the centrist Ciudadanos and far-right Vox made gains.

This leaves the city open to being governed by a triple alliance of the right similar to that which took power in Andalucia following elections there in December.

Regionally PSOE was the largest party in 10 of the 12 autonomous communities which held votes on Sunday.

But the party only won an absolute majority in Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura. It will have to strike deals with others unless parties on the right can cobble together enough seats to take control of administrations.

Commentators have interpreted PSOE’s bagging of 20 seats in the European Parliament as a sign that Spain bucked the EU-wide trend towards more eurosceptic and far-right parties being elected.

Vox, previously tipped to make a big breakthrough in both Sunday’s elections and the general ballot held in April, won three seats. The PP appeared to have recovered some ground compared to the heavy blow voters dealt the party in the general elections. The PP won 12 seats in the European Parliament, five seats ahead of the centrist Ciudadanos.

Coalition talks at all levels of Spanish politics have since begun. Meetings between Sanchez and other party leads will be back on after the prime minister decided hold off from discussions until after last Sunday’s vote.

ANTONIO and Maria Carmen still top Spain’s list of common popular names, according to latest figures.

The National Institute of Statistics revealed the news after analysing its 2017 and 2018 data.

For 2017, Lucas and Luca wer e t he m ost popul ar names for babies, while the name Antonio was still the most common male name, with a total of 678,425 Antonios registered as living in Spain.

Thi s was f ol l owed by Jose at 594,144, Manuel at 590,965, Fr anci sco at 498,934, and Davi d at 365,196.

For women, Maria Carmen was the most common name, at 656,276, followed

by Maria at 291,563, Carm en at 276,68, Josef a at 273,319, and Ana Maria at 266,967.

The average age of those nam ed Ant oni o i s 55.9years-old, while for Maria Carmens the average age is 57- year s- ol d. For young men aged an average of 27years-old, the most popular name is Daniel, while for women aged 28.4-years-old the name is Laura.

Online book ranking A RECENT study showed many readers are switching to online books. According to the 2019 Digital Report, the number of internet users in Spain has grown by four million during the last year.

Around 93 per cent of the population are now online, and spending an average of five hours and 18 minutes a day on the Internet through a device.

Landfill fire risk THE Environmental Prosecutor’s Office has warned more than a hundred landfills pose a serious fire risk in Spain.

Officials are urging politicians to act after it emerged the high number of landfill sites pose a risk of forest fires this summer. So far this year, forest blazes have destroyed 32,155 hectares of land, while a total of 4,483 fires have been registered, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. The fiscal co-ordinator of Environment and Urbanism, Antonio Vercher, has sent all provincial prosecutors a list of landfills, power lines and recreational areas with high risk of catching fire.

He also called on officials to warn all ‘local authorities, owners, and companies carrying out the activity’ landfills pose a risk so they ‘adopt the appropriate measures.’ The study into landfills, carried out each year by the Security Forces and Corps each year, showed 118 landfills in 2018.

Drones do the dirty work THE Guardia Civil are concerned that a drone could be used in a prison escape.

The Ministry of the Interior ordered an enquiry after an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) dropped drugs and a mobile phone into Alhaurin de la Torre (Malaga) prison last September.

BREXIT BRIEF Election results THE dominance of Brexit in British politics has made itself felt in European elections which saw the Conservatives and Labour haemorrhage votes to pro-leave and remain parties.

Results released from Sunday night to Monday showed the pro-leave Brexit Party, led by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, took 29 seats in the European Parliament. They won 31.6 per cent of the vote.

The Liberal Democrats, who campaigned on a staunchly pro-remain platform, came second with 20.3 per cent of the vote. The party now has 16 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), up from one before the vote.

The Green Party increased its share of MEPs from three to seven, overtaking the Conservatives and pushing them into fifth place.

Brexit cost Labour 10 MEPs. The party’s total number of seats fell by half after the vote which saw them finish third.

The Conservatives, who previously had 19 seats in the parliament, were left with four MEPs after the vote. Winners of the 2014 European election UKIP lost all 24 of their MEPs. Conservative leader Theresa May and Labour head Jeremy Corbyn both blamed their parties’ poor performance on Brexit.

May said: “It shows the importance of finding a Brexit deal.”

Bowing out

By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister has announced she will quit as leader of the Conservatives, paving the way for her successor to resolve Brexit which remains at an impasse.

Theresa May addressed Britain from outside Downing Street on Friday. She said her failure to take Britain out of the EU was a matter of ‘deep regret’ for her.

“I will shortly leave the job it has been the honour of my life to hold,” May said.

The prime minister, who formerly stands down from the Conservative leadership on Friday June 7, said Brexit was the ‘biggest challenge’ that any British government has faced during peacetime.

She called for all sides to compromise as she prepares to pass on her office, and the Brexit mantle she has carried since 2016, to her successor.

Brexit brought Theresa May to power and has now being her undoing. Her premiership, which began optimistically with a

promise to make a ‘success’ of EU withdrawal, was dogged by Britain’s looming EU exit until she announced her own exit on Friday.

The spectre of uncertainty now haunts Brexit. The issue, which has remained deadlocked in parliament throughout the year, will define the contest to succeed May. About 10 Conservatives have since entered the race, including former Foreign Secretary and archBrexiteer Boris Johnson and exBrexit Secretary Dominic Raab.

Whoever succeeds May will have to decide whether to work with Parliament as it stands, or to gamble on a general election to shore up the Conservative’s position.

They could also choose to hold a second referendum, but will have until the scheduled leave date of Thursday October 31 to decide.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org.

A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname.

The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person).

Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe.

After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate.

After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months.

The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross.

Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery.

Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million.

NATURAL PARK: Cabo de Gata in Almeria topped TripAdvisor’s Spain list.

Best in Spain TRAVEL comparison website TripAdvisor has announced 52 of the most popular parts of Spain for travellers.

The country, which is the second most visited in the world, boasts several natural and cultural heritage sites which made it onto the list.

In first place, and in Andalucia, is the Cabo de Gata Natural Park in Almeria, which is the largest protected area on the Mediterranean coast. The area provides a large variety of flora and fauna, as well as beaches, hidden coves and volcanic cliffs.

Secondly was Playa Victoria in Cadiz, offering three kilometres of beach, while in third place was the Cathedral Mosque of Cordoba.

This World Heritage Site boasts 1,300 columns supporting 365 coloured arches, and is considered one of the most important monuments in Spain.

Also featured on the list were the Alhambra, one of Spain’s most visited sites and a Cultural Heritage of Humanity site, as well as the Doñana National Park in Huelva, and the Jaen Arab Baths.

‘Mistaken identity’ claim MOROCCO has accused the Spanish television channel, La Cuatro, of airing a documentary it described as a setup.

A Punto de Mira programme broadcast earlier this month featured a Moroccan portrayed as the ‘Pablo Escobar of Morocco,’ earning €180,000 a year selling a drug manufactured with tranquillisers obtained from the Spanish health system.

According to the Moroccan authorities, the so-called drug dealer was a car-parking valet who leads a modest and blameless existence in Tangiers where he lives with his mother.

Al Yaoum lied because he was told to do so in return for 2,000 dirhams, the Tangiers police concluded after questioning him.

A Moroccan newspaper claimed afterwards that the Spanish documentary makers worked from a pre-written script and did not apply for reporting authorisation, entering Morocco as tourists, not journalists.

Production company Unicorn refuted the claims and declared that at no moment was the reporting faked.

“We know that we told the uncomfortable truth, but we didn’t pay anybody and it wasn’t a setup,” the company said. “It’s possible to traffic medication and be a valet parker.”

Mediaset, who owns La Cuatro, has since analysed the images of the so-called ‘Escobar ’ and Akhbar Al Yaoum, and found that the person who was arrested is not the same person who appeared in the documentary.

Accused of dishonesty A FORMER Spanish Ambassador to Venezuela has appeared in court with four others accused of laundering €4.5 million taken from PDVSA, a state petroleum company headquartered in Caracas.

According to the prosecution, Raul Morodo, his son Alejo and his wife along with a Venezuelan couple entered into an improper agreement, supposedly with PDVSA, to give advice which was never forthcoming.

It is also alleged payment only started after Morodo had left office and the money was channelled back to him via a complex route including a number of Latin American countries and Panama.

The defendants have been released, but had to surrender their passports.

Huge blaze consumes ‘ghetto’ A LARGE fire has devastated one of the largest and most populated camps in Spain.

Lepe, in Huelva, houses around 600 people, mostly immigrant day labourers hired for strawberry picking.

The dense community of shacks and temporary houses was mostly destroyed by a four-hour blaze which broke out at around 2.35am.

According to Spanish media, the fire was caused b y a st o v e w h ich h ad n o t b e e n

turned off, leaving the residents to find new homes after properties and possessions were destroyed.

The huts, which were built using plastics, cardboard and wood found on the street, had formed a community, where immigrants had lived and worked together.

Fire sources said the lack of garbage disposal facilities in the shanty town had made rubbish accumulate, which added to the quick spreading of the fire.

PROBE: FMC was found to have bribed Spanish doctors.

Medical bribery A GERMAN dialysis company has admitted to paying millions in bribes to secure business deals with doctors in Spain and across the world.

The US’ Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) found corruption was visible in Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) from the early 2000s, but nothing was done to address it.

The SEC was tasked with probing the claims made about FMC. FMC said it had co-operated fully with the investigation.

The investigation found the company had bribed doctors in Spain, Turkey, China, Serbia, Bosnia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and in several West African countries.

“Employees made improper payments through a variety of schemes including through the use of false consulting contracts, the forgery of documents and channelling bribes through external intermediaries,” the SEC said.

“Senior management actively thwarted enforcement efforts. The improper conduct continued for years,” the regulator added.

The SEC’s probe found FMC paid for Spanish doctors to go to international medical conferences and on holidays, funded their projects and bought them gifts to secure deals. The company spent almost €2.7 million in Spain alone, the SEC found.

Spain slammed for torture THE UN Human Rights Committee has found that suspected ETA terrorist Gorka Lupiañez was tortured by Guardia Civil following his arrest in 2007.

Now the committee is urging Spain to ‘guarantee justice,’ and pay Lupiañez compensation. He is currently in jail having been sentenced to 50 years last April for kidnapping a family and other crimes.

It is also calling on Spain to put an end to incommunicado detention, ‘which creates a context more conducive to torture.’

Lupiañez - who in 2009 was sentenced to 11 years in prison for belonging to an armed gang, illegal possession of weapons and the continued crime of falsifying an official document - denounced the Spanish State to the United Nations Committee in June 2015.

According to his testimony, officers of the Guardia Civil arrested him in Berriz (Basque Country) when they found that

The ETA member initially took his case to the European Court of Human Rights, which decided ‘not to admit’ his claim.

The committee said that it expects Spain to inform it within 180 days of the measures it will take in response to its Views, in accordance with the International Covenant on Civil Rights.

Fraught diplomatic relations VENEZUELA urged Spain to withdraw recognition of Juan Guaido and admit that it had acted rashly.

Juan Guaido, president of Venezuela’s National Assembly was recognised as the country’s president by the US, Canada and most of Western Europe, including Spain earlier this year.

Earthquake study A NEW catalogue describes the geological effects of the 50 largest earthquakes to have happened in Spain since 4000 BC to the present day.

The work of the Spanish Geological Association (AEQUA) highlights the first earthquake recorded in the country, in the Cueva del Toro de Antequera in Malaga, between 4200 and 3700 BC. Among the other earthquakes included is the one which happened in 1829 in Torrevieja, Alicante and caused 900 deaths.

The catalogue offers photographs and diagrams of the effects of each earthquake.

FASHION company Inditex and the Mercadona supermarket are the two most respected companies in Spain, according to a new ranking.

Merco Empresas y Lideres’ table placed oil company Repsol third and the Santander bank fourth. Inditex founders Amancio Ortega and Juan Riog and manager Pablo Isla joined Santander president Ana Botin as the most respected business leaders, according to the same ranking.

The table was created by analysing more than 47,550 responses to a survey, 25 company evaluations and about 200 factors.

The fall of Spanish industrial turnover in March compared to the previous month, according to the latest sector index which found year-on-year growth of 1.4 per cent.

ECB eurozone growth concerns THE slowdown in eurozone growth is worse than expected, the European Central Bank has said, while Spanish output remains stable.

Members of the central bank’s Governing Council said during their last monetary policy meeting in April that a ‘persistence of uncertainties’ continued to threaten growth prospects.

Brexit, vulnerabilities in emerging markets and the ongoing trade war between the US, China and the EU were among the uncertainties, bank officials said.

The bank decided to revise down economic output (Gross Domestic

By Joe Gerrard Product, GDP) growth forecasts from the 1.7 per cent predicted in December to 1.1 per cent.

The bank’s warning comes as Spain’s central bank said in March that it expected GDP to have grown by 0.6 per cent during the first quarter of 2019.

The Bank of Spain found the country’s GDP growth was being boosted by improved household and business investment.

Spending increases planned by the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) if it can form a coalition and

pass its draft budget would also boost growth, the bank said.

A fall in house sales and ongoing political uncertainty proved to be drags on growth in the first quarter.

The fact that Holy Week fell in April this year is also believed to have had an impact on growth figures.

Consumers spent 24 per cent more during the holiday this year compared to the last two, according to the Cetelem Seasonal Obersvatory.

The value of Spanish GDP stood at around €1.2 trillion at the end of 2018, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Santander plans job relocations SPANISH bank Santander is planning to offer relocations to more than 3,700 workers affected by branch cuts.

The bank struck a deal with unions which would also see some workers offered early retirement or redundancies.

Relocations were offered after Santander announced plans to close up to 1,150 branches, 26 per cent of those in Spain.

The move comes as Santander continues to restructure its business after taking over the Popular bank. Santander bought the bank after Popular’s depositors withdrew money en masse in 2017.

Region plans first rent controls CATALUÑA is set to become the first Spanish region to cap rent increases after two of its governing parties agreed to adopt the measure.

New regulations stop landlords from increasing rents by more than 10 per cent of the average in areas of high demand for property. Some homes will be eligible for increases of a further 5 per cent.

The Junts per Cataluyna (JxCat) and Esquerra Re-

publicana de Cataluyna (ERC), who govern the region as part of a wider pro-independence coalition, agreed to implement the controls.

The measures are designed to stop rent rates being pushed higher by rising demand, particularly for holiday rentals. Industry figures including Barcelona’s Chamber of Urban Property claimed it could drive away investment, limiting new property building.

Record profit SPANISH airline Volotea made a total of €13.6 million in pre-tax profits during 2018, 63 per cent more than the previous year and the best in the firm’s history according to its own figures.

Fashion sales OVERSEAS sales for the Spanish fashion industry fell during the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2018, according to sector data which showed they dropped by 21 per cent in Britain.

Job losses MORE than 5,470 workers in the Spanish banking industry were dismissed in 2018, according to the Bank of Spain which found there were 181,999 employees in banks at the start of this year compared to 187,472 12 months previously.

OECD on jobs automation THE amount of jobs at risk from the rise of automation in Spain is the third highest of all members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The international body said some 30 per cent of low-income jobs and 15 per cent of high earning posts could be automated out of existence in the near future.

The rise of machines doing human labour is set to affect different industries unequally, according to the OECD. “Certain jobs will disappear, but above all the nature of many jobs will change,” the OECD said.

It said skilled workers stood to benefit as their jobs would become easier while low-skilled workers could see their roles automated and themselves out of work.

Spain should encourage firms to re-train workers to make the automation process as profitable and inclusive as possible, the body said.

The OECD added Spanish productivity continued to be low compared to other countries. Productivity refers to the amount of wealth generated per hour worked on average.

Dia set for change A PRIVATE equity company has completed its takeover of the struggling Spanish supermarket chain Dia, with its new owners already making changes.

LetterOne, owned by Russian tycoon Mikhail Fridman, took over almost 70 per cent of the company with Santander backing it as its main creditor.

Karl-Heinz Holland has been appointed the new CEO of Dia and Stephan DuCharme has been made its president. The former replaces previous chief executive Borja de la Cierva.

The changes at the top of Dia have all been communicated to Spain’s National Securities and Markets Commission (CNMV) regulator.

Karl-Heinz Holland takes up the post of CEO after previously serving in the same post at Lidl from 2008 to 2014.

Tech stock TECHNOLOGICAL solutions company Amper Group has bought 100 per cent of the stock of Formecal, who makes precision machine parts for the manufacturing and aeronautics sector, for €7.5 million.

Possibly it’s because I have my hands (and heart) preoccupied with enough of the vitriol and differences of opinion which surround the Immigrant and Islamist problems, and subsequently felt yet another can of worms emerging into the daylight and landing on the ol’ boy’s page may just be a bit much to handle!

Well, I’m afraid the shocking and despicable event which occurred last week has finally made me reach for the tin opener. What’s he ranting on about now? I hear you say. Oh, you hadn’t heard?

Well there’s a surprise. Not like the UK media to keep such a despicable act of this nature under wraps. Ha! Well I’ll tell you.

Last week a young South African municipal councillor Annette Kennealy was brutally murdered on the smallholding she owned in Louis Trichard, SA. Annette was an outspoken and tireless advocator of white farmer’s rights. Always aware of the danger she evoked she found it necessary to constantly carry a gun! (Nice!). Unfortunately, the firearm was not protection enough and she was discovered in her home, brutally bludgeoned to death with a pipe and a hammer.

Those who manage to hold on to their properties, including friends of mine, live surrounded by walls and barbed wire with dogs roaming and guns permanently at hand. Those less lucky are begging in the streets (where they are often kicked to death) while others with families are moved into ‘white squatter camps’ where they live in filth and squalor, with up to 100 to a bedroom and shared kitchen.

Helpless white parents wander the streets unable to find work and watch their children go hungry, begging for bread and dying. And the West watches this despicable regime sink into an abyss of evil rapacity and bloodlust - even against their own - and does precisely nothing.

Shame on us all. Especially those in the West who continue to support its vile leaders. A bunch of tyrannical murderers who continue to wipe out those who simply happen to be of a different colour. Oops, sorry. Doesn’t it count the other way around!?

by Robert Shallis I DECIDED to write an article on worrying after having a discussion with a family member who has become so accustomed to worrying, he even worries that he has nothing to worry about.

We often hear people say ‘stop worrying, it won’t make any difference.’

This is a very misleading statement because worry ‘does’ make a difference.

It makes a difference in our ability to cope with the very thing we are worrying about.

The word ‘worry’ is derived from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘to choke or strangle.’ This is exactly what we do to ourselves when we worry, we choke the very joy out of being and living the way we should. Our rational thinking is diminished and our fears take over and dominate. It is a subtle yet destructive way of destroying our hopes and dreams, paralysing us and preventing us from progressing in life.

Worry is a negative use of our imagination and over 90 per cent of what we worry about is irrelevant. Many of our worries are based on past events which cannot be changed, or future events which will never happen. The remain-

A LITTLE WORRY: Isn’t a bad thing as it pushes some people to take assertive action, but chronic, persistent worry can be dangerous.

ing worries are therefore usually manageable if they are not blown out of proportion.

Worry can stem from a lack of confidence due to a lack of knowledge and understanding; insight is important. We also often hear people say ‘I’m a born worrier.’ Again, this statement is unfounded. We were not born worriers.

We have simply acquired a habit of worrying. Excessive worrying can fur-

ther lead to anxiety, this is worry spiralled out of control. The phrase ‘worrying yourself sick,’ is a statement certainly worth noting.

A little worry isn’t a bad thing as it pushes some people to take assertive action, but it’s chronic persistent worry which can be dangerous, and as mentioned, can actually lead to sickness.

Our imagination is a wonderful gift, but if we use it in the wrong way and

let negative thoughts dominate our minds we are allowing it to create our daily reality. The more we feed the worry habit, the more it grows and eventually becomes part of our personality with most of our thoughts going straight into that worry channel which we have created, reinforcing it each time.

So how do we break the worry habit? Firstly, believe that the habit can

be broken. Remember, it’s just a habit like any other formed habit.

Worry is irrational thinking, so whenever you start to worry, take that worry and think rationally, break it down, understand exactly what that worry entails and what you can actually do about it. Discard the habitual negative thought for just a moment and replace it with a positive outcome. Just imagine the opposite! You’ll find the reality of the problem is so much smaller than you initially thought, and it can be easily handled.

To reconfirm that worry is a state of mind; I invite you to partake in an exercise. Write down a list of your current worries on a piece of paper then place that paper into a sealed envelope. After a month, open the envelope and look at your list of worries. You will find that most of them will have solved themselves and no longer need to be worried about.

It takes as much energy to think of a positive outcome as it does for a negative one; make the decision now, and change your habit to one which serves you, rather than depletes you.

Your mind is like a garden, tend it well and it will show its true beauty.

Pause to consider this day THERE really are some dates we just shouldn’t ever forget aren’t there? I mean, if I were to forget our wedding anniversary or my wife’s birthday, I’d be in big trouble!

Other dates too, like Christmas Day, or for some, St George’s Day, or even for our American cousins, July 4 may have very special significance.

So why should I suggest that Thursday, May 30 should be a date right up there with all the others, to be celebrated by those of us who consider ourselves Christian? What’s so special about that date then, other than the fact it’s the day this edition of the Euro Weekly News was published?

Well this year, May 30, being just 40 days after Easter, is Ascension Day, and as such is actually one of the most important dates in the Christian calendar. For the Bible tells us that just 40 days after rising from the grave, Jesus was taken into heaven, in full view of his followers, whose lives as a result were changed beyond all recognition.

And to be honest, if I as a Christian actu-

ally believe this, then, as suggested in my last item, it should have a pretty dramatic effect on me too.

For Ascension Day reminds me that not only did Christ overcome death by returning to life that Easter Day after having been crucified and buried, but he also returned to his Father, as he himself said, to prepare a place for us.

And in due time, he also stated our bodies too will be recreated like his own to join him in a new Heaven and new Earth. Through his ascension Jesus confirms that death isn’t the end; there is eternal purpose to our lives here on Earth, and when this period of our existence comes to an end, we can look forward to an eternity far more fantastic than anything we could ever dream of. It was this conviction, having watched him ascend, that made the followers of Jesus utterly resolute, able to withstand any persecution.

No wonder then that I earlier suggested this day is one of the most important dates in the Christian calendar!

AS a writer, I’m often asked where do characters in novels spring from? Well, like people who make sausages, writers who create characters would sometimes rather their readers didn’t know exactly what’s involved in the production process. Sometimes it is not quite as edifying as you’d think!

Most writers I know keep a kind of ‘filing cabinet’ in the back of their heads of people they’ve met that they dip into for ideas.

Sometimes it’ll be the way someone talks breathlessly, lisping, repeating themselves (for instance, ‘I am clear that...’ As in: I am clear that Brexit means Brexit.’ Remind you of anyone? Maybe best not to go down that path). Or a physical tic - jaw clenching, chin scratching, nail biting (Oops! That you, too?).

Writers are quite leech-like. Virtually everyone I’ve met (who’ll all remain nameless to protect the guilty) has ended up in my novels somewhere. Nobody’s safe!

AS holidays approach, it’s worth remembering thousands of luggage items go missing in transit every year. Luckily, most airlines get it back to you within 48 hours. But what happens in the meantime?

Stay ever-ready with our 12 hand luggage essentials guide and avoid untold stress if your baggage decides to go on a little trip all of its own…

1) Travel documents Keep essentials in easily accessible compartments/folders. Include passport, visa, boarding pass, insurance, hotel, car hire. Carry printed copies of bookings, in case your mobile dies or goes missing!

2) Valuables Carry cash, cards and valuables (including spectacles, prescription). Don’t risk loss, theft of precious items, so leave the crown jewels at home! Don’t keep cash/cards in one place. Split it between you and travel companions for added security.

BE READY: For anything when you travel, including the essentials to stay hydrated.

3) Prescribed medication Carry enough medication for at least two days in case checked luggage goes walkies. Carry your prescription and keep medication in original packaging to comply with security requirements.

You’re permitted essential medicines of more than 100ml in hand luggage as long as you have supporting documentation from your doctor,

or the prescription.

4) First aid kit Painkillers, indigestion tablets, anti-diarrhoea, sickness tablets, allergy medication, plasters, bandages, antiseptic etc. Carry in a clear travel/toiletry bag. It’ll avoid simple ailments stopping you in your tracks.

5) Toiletries Basic travel-size items, like toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, razor. Keep

within 100ml liquid regulations. Carry anything else you can’t live without, like favourite make-up (you may not find your preferred brand locally, or it could cost you five times more!).

6) Spare clothes Trust me, this saves serious hassle if your luggage vanishes. Choose light, compact items. It’s amazing how small you can fold/roll shorts/ trousers and a top. Ladies - include a shawl and tie it to your bag handle to double-up as a blanket on the flight, or while travelling.

7) Snacks It pays to take food in case of unexpected delays (which may happen once boarded) and saves shelling-out airport prices. Critical if travelling with old or young travellers with special requirements. Carry chewing gum to help with ear popping and as an instant breath freshener.

8) Water Opt for a refillable water bottle.

Silicone is reinforced and folds up to save space. Most airports have water fountains past security.

9) Mobile phone/tablet Stay connected and occupied during the journey. Remember earbuds/ earphones.

10) Portable charger/adaptor Choose light, compact, powerful chargers to avoid stress of battery failure on the move.

11) Pen and paper Yes it’s old-style, but always useful and takes up no room!

12) Travel insurance We would say that wouldn’t we?

WHILE like most people I was not certain that Theresa May had shown she was the person to unite her party and country on a Brexit deal, I was still moved by her emotional resignation speech.

I cannot imagine the pressures of being prime minister, both from her own backbenchers, the opposition, press, and even some of her Cabinet. At least Mrs May seemed like she genuinely believed she was trying to do the best thing for the country, even if no one else shared her views on what sort of Brexit we should have.

I only hope the next prime minister will have the same commitment to their country.

Saving a species DEAR editor, I read your article about the project to save the Iberian Lynx from extinction in last week’s paper (Issue 1768) and it made me very happy to read that something is being done to try and save this precious animal belonging to the Iberian Peninsula.

As we are currently experiencing the worst spate of species becoming extinct in a very long time, it is so important that we all realise how important it is to take action to try to stop it.

I know extinction is a natural phenomenon, but unlike in the past, when extinctions were caused by natural events, the current crisis is almost entirely caused by us humans.

Though this project may be a drop in the ocean with regards to tackling the problem, it is a step in the right direction.

Three conversations DEAR Editor I am learning Spanish and if I say so myself, not doing too bad. I can chat happily with my Spanish neighbours, converse with my doctor in Spanish and generally, apart from my English accent have little problems, apart from one.

The problem I have is how you can listen to three conversations at once, in any language, let alone Spanish.

And yet the Spanish, particularly the ladies manage to have this ability.

I was in a café the other day and there were four Spanish ladies at the next table, I saw and heard all four of them speaking at the same time. I had to have a small operation, the two nurses were wheeling me into the theatre with the doctor and all three of them were questioning me, at the same time, about whether I had eaten anything that morning.

BRITAIN’S prime minister has become Brexit’s latest casualty. Theresa May’s resignation announcement on Friday comes almost three years after the result of the 2016 referendum dealt a lethal blow to her predecessor David Cameron’s premiership.

May, who sided with Remain during the referendum, entered Number 10 Downing Street on a wave of pro-Brexit sentiment in her Conservative party.

‘Brexit means Brexit’ she vowed at the time, and she was going to make a success of it.

Almost three years later the country watched as May said her failure to do so was a matter of ‘deep regret.’

Theresa May will, for better or worse, go down in history as Britain’s Brexit prime minister. The issue will, more than any other success of scandal, come to define her time in power.

The deadlock which brought May low proved her government, parliament and Britain remains deeply divided over the biggest constitutional change made since it entered the then Common Market in 1973.

Vote after vote showed there was no majority in the House of Commons for her deal, or for the options laid out buffetstyle after its failure. Cross-party talks between the Conservatives and Labour opposition also proved fruitless.

May’s successor faces having to cobble a majority from a fragmented parliament together to pass either the current deal or a new version.

For the sake of Britain and the fate of expatriates living here, May’s successor has to achieve what she could not.

PSOE makes gains in Spain and Europe AS most people know, this election did not use the UK’s almost unique ‘First Past the Post’ system. That’s what’s used in a General Election. The BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg has calculated if it had been a General Election using that system, there would be NO Conservative MPs in the UK Parliament at all! WOW! But before all the Brexit Party members get too excited about forming the next government, the arithmetic shows the Pro-Brexit parties got only 34.9 per cent of the vote when added together. The Pro-Remain parties added together got 40.4 per cent. The hopelessly split Tories and Labour would count as ‘Don’t Knows’ under current circumstances of course - and they got demolished. Roll on the next General Election!

Live your dream in 3 steps - the beginning Joris Plu MOST of us use spring time to start cleaning the house and clearing it out. For many it is a yearly returning ritual. Some of us are really looking forward to it. And when you ask people why they are so happy with this, they give you the following answer - it brings more light into the house and ourselves.

Cleaning and clearing out makes life brighter, lighter, happier. It feels like a brand new start. Leaving some of the old behind, starting a new life. By taking material things away from yourself you will automatically clear your head in a positive way.

In this season alone and it happens worldwide, there is the highest rate of women and men starting to create a new dream. Or making a start from an older dream.

As our well known friend Walt Disney once said: ‘All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.’

THREE STEPS: Live your dream.

In my belief this is it. If you really believe in your dream and you really want it to happen, it will happen. You can use many steps to fulfil your dreams. As long as you ‘want’ it badly. There is no golden rule or guideline.

But to help you on your way, you can use these three simple steps. Just go for it, go for your dream. Make it happen. I am sure you can do this.

Step 1 Clear your head by writing things down. You have so much stuff going on in your head and it keeps on adding up day after day. You have to clear your thoughts by taking a pen and paper and writing them down. Think about those things that make you happy, that make ‘you’ feel good. Things that instantly put a big smile on your face. No censorship. Let it flow. At this stage everything is possible. If you can buy a little note book and take it everywhere you go, from time to time write everything down concerning your dream project.

Step 2 Say no to all the negativity in your life at this stage. Keep your thinking positive. This is your train and no one elses. You are at the steering wheel. Look into a mirror every day and smile at yourself. Even try to say a few positive words to yourself. Ask questions and give answers. Because this person in the mirror is going to make your dream come true.

Don’t you just love that person?

Step 3 Review a few times what you have been

writing. Make it more clear, rewrite it if you want to. Put all your feelings into it. Feel your dream, see it, smell it, hear it, see yourself touching your dream if you can. Make it completely yours with the end result already in place. As if you have it now. You are now living your dream, the beginning of it… with the end in mind already. In this way you tell your mind to act accordingly… it will act as if your dream is here and now.

From now on you start working on a plan.

Do not lose direction. Just go for it. Go for what your soul at this moment is longing for. I believe very much you can and will succeed.

Measles fear PUBLIC HEALTH ENGLAND is urging everyone to get vaccinated after it was revealed measles cases are twice as high as they were at the end of 2018.

Health bosses said there were 231 confirmed cases of the disease in the first quarter of 2019, making it the third worst period for the illness in five years.

Experts at Public Health England warned that measles, which can kill children, has spread rapidly, from just 97 cases in the last quarter of 2018, and 143 in the quarter before that.

The PHE’s head of immunisation, Dr Mary Ramsay said: “Measles can kill and it is incredibly easy to catch, especially if you are not vaccinated.

“Even one child missing their vaccine is one too many - if you are in any doubt about your child’s vaccination status, ask your GP as it’s

Vaping ‘more effective’ for quitting E-CIGARETTES are three times more effective at helping smokers quit than nicotine substitutes.

According to a new study at University College London, vapers are 95 per cent more likely to give up smoking than those not using the devices.

Meanwhile, those who use nicotine substitutes, such as patches or gum, were 34 per cent more likely to succeed than using nothing at all. The study of almost 20,000 smokers found those who were given medication to help their nicotine addiction were also 82 per cent more successful.

Based on the new evidence, charities are calling on the NHS to fund vaping devices for free. Scientists have warned there is not yet enough data to rule vaping as completely safe, however.

How to ‘get along’with anxiety

Ready, set, glow SUMMER is upon us and this means time at the beach, by the pool, and the possibility of a tan.

While the safest way is always to use fake tan, is you do like to get a little natural colour there are some things you can do to give yourself a head start.

Firstly, for skin that is smooth, glowing, and ready for sun, try gently exfoliating before hitting the beach.

If you do like to sunbathe, this will ensure that any colour you do get is as even as possible and lasts longer. In addition, sloughing off old dead skin cells before any sun exposure means any moisturisers or after sun applied later will also penetrate more deeply.

For a hydrating and gentle body exfoliant, try mixing sea salt from the kitchen cupboard with a little olive oil and a few drops of essential oil. Apply to damp skin in large, circular motions before showering off, taking care not to slip.

For the face, gently exfoliate using a cotton wash cloth to remove cleanser or makeup in the evenings. Alternatively, use a gentle chemical toner to get rid of dead skin cells and ensure a smooth surface for tanning.

After exfoliating and catching any rays, make sure to moisturise thoroughly using a natural after sun such as aloe vera, or alternatively use your favourite body lotion or oil.

Finally, for skin which is in need of some

extra attention after sun exposure, try a hydrating and soothing mask by mixing honey with a few drops of essential oil before leaving for 10 minutes to get to work. After removing, make sure to apply moisturiser, paying particular attention to any dry or sensitive areas.

ANYONE can have anxiety, but learning to live with it is possible.

Anxiety is a broad condition, where fear and worries do not go away. This can affect school, work and relationships. For some, anxiety means feeling nervous before attending a meeting. For others it is a feeling of constant worries or panic, not allowing to feel safe anywhere.

It is normal to get nervous before an upcoming event, going to the dentist, buying a house - most people worry about major events. However someone who will not leave their home for a long period of time because they are afraid of being out there, that is not a normal feeling.

Anxiety is caused by a variety of factors. Some may include: a received threat, previous trauma, losing of a loved one unexpectedly, a car or violent accident.

Meditation and mindset helps with anxiety. Yoga releases stored emotions, relaxes both body and mind and enables us to see things for what they are.

Brothers on board ADAM THOMAS, 30, was spotted partying with brothers Ryan and Scott on a yacht in Ibiza last Wednesday. The Thomas brothers soaked up the Spanish sunshine as they partied with pals on board the luxury liner. Among the trio’s friends group was Chris Fountain, who used to star alongside Ryan on Coronation Street.

This holiday comes after Adam was rushed to hospital earlier this month when he dropped a weight on his face while training in the gym.

Adam left his role in Emmerdale in 2018 after eight years of playing Adam Burton on the show.

Corrie star Ryan has also had a stressful time, after being wrongfully accused of punching Roxanne Pallett with intent on Celebrity Big Brother last year.

Reunited in Ibiza TOWIE’S Chloe Sims has sparked reunion rumours with co-star Dan Edgar after recently jetting to Ibiza following their bitter split.

After their brief fling, things ended badly as Chloe discovered Dan was also seeing his ex Amber Turner at the same time.

Dan then met up with both his love interests in order to admit to his wrongdoings.

Despite these events, Chloe looked happy to be united with Dan last week as they joined a group of pals for drinks in the Spanish sun.

Fresh pesto sauce WE have always grown a selection of herbs here at Olive Tree Farm. We tried starting from seed without huge success, a number of times. This year we resorted to buying the young plantlets that you see for sale on the markets

and in the farm stores, and the results have been much better.

This year our top growers have been Rosemary, Thyme, Sage, Coriander and Parsley. The Rosemary, Thyme and Sage are small bushes, so I just pick as I go. The

Coriander and Parsley however grew like mad but as the weather warms, you find they go past their best, flower, and go tough. However, you can freeze them.

You can add them to ice cube trays along with some olive oil, freeze and then once frozen pop them out and add to a freezer bag to use as and when you require them. Even easier, you can just add chopped leaves to a freezer bag, flatten the bag a little, seal and then when you need them snap some off. They are perfect for stews and casseroles.

The other herb which I have on the grow is large leafed Basil which comes into its own and I can’t wait to make jars of tomato sauce ready for pasta dishes. You can also use Basil to make a fantastic pesto sauce. Here is how I make mine.

Ingredients 1 cup fresh basil leaves.

3 cloves garlic, peeled.

3 tablespoons pine nuts.

1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan.

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste.

1/3 cup olive oil.

Method Add the basil leaves, garlic, pine nuts and parmesan to a food processor, season with a little salt and pepper and as you whizz it, slowly drizzle in the oil until you get the consistency you require.

Store in an airtight container in the fridge, it lasts for a week.

For a really fast supper, try cooking some pasta, slather over your pesto, give it a stir and then sprinkle with some parmesan cheese! Easy and delicious, and vegetarian.

OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency.

We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil.

We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

SPAIN’S newly-constituted parliament has not yet invested a president but it does have four MPs on remand.

The fate of the Catalan politicians involved in the Proces intended to lead to an independent republic will not be known until their Lordships announce their verdict until next September.

So unless there is a change of official heart Oriol Junqueras, Jordi Turull, Josep Rull and Jordi Sánchez who were elected last month to the national parliament for pro-independence parties will remain remanded on charges of sedition, rebellion and misappropriation of public funds.

The Catalan separatists have been peddling their sob story outside Spain to anybody willing to listen to, with mutterings not long ago in the German Bundestag.

There is immense irritation inside Spain amongst all but separatists when Junqueras and Co are referred to as political prisoners.

Soto del Real where the four are banged up is no gulag but whichever way you look at it, those four are imprisoned because of their politics.

Misappropriation of public funds has been around for quite some time, but archaic accusations of sedition and rebellion assures them of unmerited sympathy and has the undesired effect of making them look like political prisoners.

THE lifespan of new technologies is often shorter than a fruit-fly’s. So which country would you think is the most stubborn at letting go of the old stuff?

Doing favours THE separatist parties in the Catalan parliament did a favour to Miquel Iceta, the leader of the PSC-PSOE socialists in Cataluña, by vetoing him as Speaker of the Senate.

They did Pedro Sanchez a favour, too. Their refusal was parliamentary bad manners, but not to worry. Had they backed the nomination, Sanchez would never have heard the end of it

amid accusations from the PP, Ciudadanos and naturally - Vox, of being in thrall to the separatists and an enemy of Spain.

Once Ortega began distributing his largesse it was unworthy, but possibly accurate, to suspect this was either conscience money or a philanthropic version of the pickpocket’s ‘distraction’ technique.

Major shake-up in Albox Council ALBOX mayor-elect Francisco Torrecillas saw his UCIN Union of Independent Citizens party gain an absolute majority in Sunday’s municipal elections.

Torrecillas had been the only UCIN councillor in the previous legislature, but now the party occupies 10 out of 17 council seats after winning 2,958 votes, or 55 per cent.

Almanzora highway step forward THE Almanzora highway project looks to be moving forward a step. The Andalucia regional government’s Development Department has proposed allocating the contract for constructing the stretch from El Cucador to the intersection with the A-1706 in Huercal-Overa, to the Construcciones Tejera-Martin Casillas UTE (temporary union of companies) for nearly €21 million plus VAT. The company’s project bid received the most points from the department’s Contracting Board out of the 21 received, along with one other, whose offer was slightly more expensive. Speaking during a visit to Almeria City last week, Junta de Andalucia Development Minister Marifran Carazo pledged the works contract for what is the penultimate section of the highway, would be awarded within weeks.

And they will be hoping that their race engineers will be able to transfer the form shown by the new car in testing on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring to their own slightly underpowered (by F1 standards) cars.

On the road, EcoSport drives well, and while the steering feel is rather heavier than most rivals, it does enhance the sense of composure and driver control. The suspension is on the firm side, but perfectly comfortable on all but the roughest surfaces.

The 123hp 1.5-litre diesel unit has a 0-100kph time of 11.3 seconds and the top speed is 180kph (112mph), with emissions of 140g/km. Average fuel economy is 15.4kpl (43.5mpg).

While the Ford Ecosport is not best in class in every category, it does come across as the stand-out all-rounder which is reflected in its sales figures - over 100,000 sold across Europe in 2018 and more than 30,000 sold in Europe in the first three months of 2019.

NISSAN’S plant in Barcelona’s Zona Franca has had its future guaranteed, but it comes at the cost of 600 jobs.

Nissan’s management and unions reached an agreement to maintain the viability of the factory, but it involves cutting the workforce. The departures will be made through early retirements with the rest in voluntary redundancies. Those taking early retirement will get 85 per cent of net salary until official retirement at age 63. Those applying for voluntary redundancy will be paid €50,000 net on top of their legally entitled compensation. Workers will also receive a pay rise of 4 per cent over the next three years.

This agreement unblocked Nissan’s plan to invest €70 million over the next two years in a new paint plant, as current facilities were on the verge of failing stricter environmental regulations.

This will enable the company to allocate another model for assembly at the factory within the next two years.

A clean future A NEW development could make the production of hydrogen much more economically and environmentally viable for use as a fuel for cars.

At the moment most hydrogen is produced by splitting methane. Unfortunately, this produces not just hydrogen, but also lots of carbon dioxide - the very greenhouse gas hydrogen fuel cell motors are designed to eliminate.

While the exhaust waste of hydrogenpowered vehicles is harmless water vapour, the whole exercise is rendered pointless from a climate change point of view if the CO2 emissions are merely transferred to factories producing the fuel instead.

One of the main problems is that the major alternative source of hydrogen has been the electrolysis of water.

With fresh water in relatively short supply the obvious source is the sea. But up until now this has not been a tenable solution for mass-producing hydrogen because of the salt in seawater.

It quickly corrodes the electrolyser’s anode, making it too difficult and costly to be worth using. Desalinising the water first is possible, but the costs in terms of price and power makes it untenable for mass production.

Now scientists at the USA’s Stanford University say that they may have come up with

the solution that could be a game changer.

The researchers discovered that if they coated the anode with layers which were rich in negative charges, the layers repelled chloride and slowed down the decay of the underlying metal.

They layered nickel-iron hydroxide on top of nickel sulfide, which covers a nickel foam core. The nickel foam acts as a conductor transporting electricity from the power source - and the nickel-iron hydroxide sparks the electrolysis, separating water into oxygen and hydrogen. During electrolysis, the nickel sulfide evolves into a negativelycharged layer which protects the anode.

Without the negatively charged coating, the anode only works for around 12 hours in seawater, according to Michael Kenney, colead author on the paper. “The whole electrode falls apart into a crumble,” Kenney said, “But with this layer, it is able to go more than a thousand hours.”

They have produced hydrogen from seawater using solar power as efficiently as electrolysing pure water.

Together with other new developments the case for hydrogen fuel cell cars is getting stronger as costs come down.

For the motorist the main advantage is range - as today you simply fill up at a pumping station rather than wait for a battery to charge.

Redemption for Valencia IN the end there was redemption for Valencia.

Halfway through their centenary season, most of the club’s fans could see little reason to celebrate. They were just four points off the relegation places and the days of head coach Marcelino Garcia Toral looked numbered.

But the club hierarchy held their nerve. They decided that the team had not being playing badly and just needed a change of fortune. Garcia Toral kept his job and now they are the holders of the Copa del Rey. They had to do it the hard way too, beating holders Barcelona 2-1. For the latter it was the end of an era. For the first time in 1,456 days they were not the cup holders.

CHAMPIONS: Valencia took the Copa del Rey. cation when they sealed fourth spot in La Liga the previous weekend with a 2-0 win against Valladolid.

A season which threatened to be a disaster had been rescued then, but the Copa del Rey has turned it into a triumph. They can now look forward to the next campaign with huge optimism. Not so

for Barcelona. They may have won La Liga at a canter, finishing 11 points ahead of Atletico Madrid and 19 points in front of arch-rivals Real Madrid, but that is not good enough for the Catalans.

They crave Champions League glory, but the team is starting to look over-reliant on one man - Lionel Messi.

Indeed, it was Messi who scored for Barcelona in the 21 defeat, but, certainly in the first half, even he had looked a little lost and ineffective.

Valencia could have gone one up after just five minutes when Rodrigo ran through and rounded keeper Jasper Cillessen, only for a last moment slide from Gerard Pique to deny him on the line.

But Valencia did not have to wait long to take the lead.

Gabriel Paulista and pulled it back across for Gameiro to step in and convert the chance.

Messi found himself isolated - the most forward player with no one around him to help out. Barcelona were going nowhere, while Valencia were swift and incisive.

They took advantage when Francis Coquelin found Carlos Soler sprinting up the right wing, past Alba. Rodrigo converted the ensuing cross to make it 2-0.

Barcelona now awoke from their lethargy and started to play. With their substitutions Barca finally gave Messi some support in the form of Arturo Vidal and Malcom.

The result was several opportunities, with Messi finally scoring from close range after Clement Lenglet’s header hit the post.

But despite their renewed vigour Barcelona couldn’t find a way through, and it is now Valencia who are the Copa del Rey champions.

Cabrera LBC hosts open pairs CABRERA Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Turre Open Pairs on Saturday and Sunday May 18 and 19. As the name suggests the competition was open to any club. The majority of clubs in the area were represented, with 16 teams entering overall.

The competition is played on a rinks round robin format over eight ends. The teams split into two groups, the winners of group A playing the winners of group B in the final, and the runners-up in each group played for third and fourth place.

Group A winners were Nigel and Karen Rushton from Almeria BC against Group B winners Trevor Moore and Barbara Reardon from Cabrera LBC. Nigel and Karen won the final 8-3.

Cabrera LBC issued many congratulations to Nigel and Karen and commiserations to Trevor and Barbara.

John Henworth and Barbara Ruscoe from Indalo BC finished third and Malcolm and Jean Smallwood from Cabrera LBC finished fourth The finals were followed by a free BBQ, a nice end to a weekend of great bowling.
