Flying the flag for beach quality BLUE FLAGS will fly on beaches in 10 provincial municipalities this summer.

In all, 27 of Almeria’s beaches have earned the Environmental and Consumer Education Association quality distinction.

This is two down on 2018.

Two beaches in Cuevas del Almanzora, one in Mojacar and one in Carboneras lost the recognition this year.

Regional government Tourism territorial delegate Jose Luis Valdivia said efforts had to be made to get services and facilities on these beaches back up to scratch. The delegate promised the Junta de Andalucia would ‘get cracking’ on the issue.

Roquetas de Mar continues to boast the most beach quality distinctions. Blue Flags are set to be hoisted on six of the municipality’s beaches: La Romanilla, La Bajadilla, Urbanizacion, Las Salinas, Aguadulce and Playa Serena.

El Ejido and Adra have been awarded four Blue Flags each.

RECOGNITION: El Censo is one of Adra’s four beaches to merit the Blue Flag for quality this year.

El Ejido’s qualifying beaches are the Levante Almerimar, the Poniente Almerimar, Barlema and San Miguel. The Adra Blue Flag beaches are El Censo, El Carboncillo, San Nicolas and Sirena Loca.

The El Ancon, Los Barquicos-Los Cocones and Las Marinicas, beaches in Carboneras all have the recognition, while the El Corral beach has

lost its flag this year.

Nijar and Almeria both have two: Aguamarga and San Jose in the former and the city beach and San Miguel de Cabo de Gata in the latter.

The Blue Flag beaches in Pulpi are Mar Rabiosa and Calypso. In Mojacar they are Marina de la Torre and Venta del Bancal-Ventanicas: the Piedra Villazar beach failed to earn the

quality distinction unlike in 2018.

Cuevas del Almanzora’s sole Blue Flag this summer is for Villaricos. The Quitapellejos beach in Palomares and Pozo del Esparto did not qualify as they did last year. Balengra also gets just the one.

Roquetas de Mar’s is the only marina in the province with a 2019 Blue Flag.

Rental fraudster caught out A SUSPECTED scammer is under arrest for fraudulently offering rentals on-line.

The 39-year old man is accused of swindling four people out of at least €2,000 altogether, passing himself off as an intermediary between owners of apartments up for rent in Almeria city and tenants, and placing adverts on property portals.

Police said J.J.S.C. got people to pay

him deposits which were never handed over to the owners. He told the landlords the tenant had changed their minds about the rental.

On other occasions he showed scam victims a supposed rental property from the outside only on the pretext it was not possible to go in until the current tenants moved out. According to police the elderly occu-

pants had no intention of going anywhere.

The 39-year old produced rental contracts and reservation documentation with false information. Unwitting would-be tenants gave him deposits of between €150 and €450, although he rarely issued receipts.

Gun-wielding thief caught A SUSPECTED thief who threatened to shoot a woman in El Ejido if she didn’t hand over her vehicle is under arrest.

Police believe the 23-year-old was also responsible for targeting two other vehicle owners and an attack on a supermarket.

Police said M T first stole a van at gunpoint in his native Granada.

“Give me the car or I’ll shoot you twice,” he ordered, according to the victim.

He then headed for El Ejido, where on April 15 he unsuccessfully tried to steal another vehicle using the same threatening tactics.

He was thwarted on this occasion thanks to the security locks on the car doors.

The following day police received reports of an armed robbery on a supermarket in Parador de las Hortichuelas in Roquetas de Mar. Statements from witnesses and further investigations led to the identification of the suspect.

Working together, National Police and the Guardia Civil tracked him down in a hostel in Maracena in Granada five days after the first crime.

Officers found the gun he used to intimidate his victims in the car taken in the El Ejido car park, as well as a number of stolen items.

The 23-year-old had a record for 10 previous crimes.

Family feud leads to fatal shooting A MAN was killed and his brother injured in a shooting between neighbouring families on Friday afternoon in Gador.

Spanish press reported the 50-year-old died from his injuries while being rushed to the Benahadux medical centre by the brother, who suffered a gunshot wound to the buttock area.

Guardia Civil have made one arrest, but at the time of going to press the investigation remained open.

According to Spanish media there was a history of conflict between the two families. In the wake of the shooting Guardia Civil officers were deployed to the area to keep the peace and prevent further incidents.

THE Almeria College of Veterinarians has become the first in Spain to create a blood bank for animals. Until now it has been necessary for provincial vets to request blood for emergencies and operations from the Madrid Veterinarian Transfusion Centre. The service is free for college members.

THE Junta de Andalucia, the Almeria provincial council and Santa Fe de Mondujar, Alhama and Gador local authorities are backing the Amigos de la Alcazaba association in seeking UNESCO World Heritage status for the Copper Age Los Millares archaeological site and megalithic necropolis.

THE provincial government is investing €430,000 in restoration works on 18 churches and sanctuaries in 15 municipalities. Almeria Council president Javier A Garcia said the investment focused especially on the province’s smallest municipalities and the most emblematic places of worship, describing them as ‘architectural gems.’

Letters 44 Time Out 45-48 ANCIENT SCULPTURE: The Dama de Elche is on display in Madrid’s National Archaeological Museum.

Museum marvel THIS picture of one of Spain’s most famous artefacts comes as the world marks International Museums Day on Saturday.

The Dama de Elche (Lady of Elche) is currently held in Madrid’s National Archaeological Museum. It is believed to date from the 4th century BC and is thought to represent an ancient goddess.

The sculpture takes its name from the town of Elche in Alicante Province, Valencia where it was discovered in 1897.

Campello Esclapez is said to have uncovered it while clearing land in the La Alcudia area for farming.

It was initially acquired by the Louvre in Paris before being returned to Spain in 1941. It was moved to the National Archaeological Museum in 1971 and was loaned to Elche in 2006.

The Dama de Elche is thought to have been painted in bright colours when it was originally made. Historians and archaeologists believe it was made by Punic-Iberians, a hybrid cul-

Bar brawl arrests POLICE arrested an Almeria pub bouncer for beating up a customer and knocking them unconscious.

According to police reports, the trouble began when the 41-year-old Romanian bouncer slapped the victim’s brother’s girlfriend on her behind. The brother had a go at the Romanian for inappropriate behaviour.

The bouncer reacted by calling over fellow pub security personnel, and between them they threw out the two brothers and the girlfriend of one.

Once out on the street, the bouncer repeatedly hit one of the lads, injuring his cheek and jaw and knocking him out. The severity of the victim’s injuries meant he had to undergo an emergency operation.

In a separate city pub brawl, a 32year-old man attacked another customer with a glass, leaving them with a nasty cut on the face which needed stitches.

Police detained both attackers on assault charges.

The artefact has become synonymous with ancient Spanish history. It featured on the one-peseta banknote in 1948.

It has also inspired art including in French painter James Tissot’s Jephthah’s Daughter, produced shortly after the sculpture’s discovery. Tissot based other works on the Dama de Elche.

Project plans pour in SOME 70 proposals for Almeria City’s City of Culture have been presented in response to the request for ideas from the city council and the Almeria College of Architects.

A jury will now pick the best plans for the project dubbed ‘Space in front of the Sea.’ The architect behind structures including the Malaga Municipal Auditorium, Federico Soriano Pelaez, will be among the jury members whittling down the entries to three finalists.

The three selected will have 35 days to come up with a draft project with graphics, description and information panels.

The aim is to create a new cultural area which will be home to the Almeria City Orchestra, the Almeria Youth Orchestra, the Junior Orchestra, the municipal band, and a number of other music groups which need rehearsal space. The plans also include revamping the area around the Maestro Padilla Municipal Auditorium.

RBL Mojacar Chairman, Andrew Richardson, presented EWN Almeria Regional Manager Jackie Butcher and Almeria edition local reporter Cathy Elelman with a certificate of appreciation for publishing the branch’s news and events.

RBL Mojacar organised last week’s presentation at The Salty Dog in Mojacar Playa to officially recognise not only the support of the EWN, but also of local businesses and associations which this year have raised money for the branch Poppy Appeal.

Iceland Supermarket, Bar La Sarten, the Oasis Bar, Indalo Partners, Scotty’s restaurant, the Masons, the Anglican Church, the Alfaix shop, Badgers restaurant, Los Conteros restaurant, Ibex Insurance, Stella’s salon, The Bistro restaurant, Kukis Restaurant, Tikar hotel and restaurant and Scotsdale Insurance have all raised well over €100 for the appeal this year. So too has the presentation venue.

Road closed ROADWORKS on the N340 in the El Lance de la Virgen area of Adra means this stretch of road is closed to all traffic except residents for about a month.

Mayor Manuel Cortes said it was good news and was confident it will be ‘a definitive solution’ to traffic and flooding issues.

Elderly motorcyclist killed in collision A 65-YEAR-OLD motorcyclist died after a collision with a car at a Tjunction in Garrucha last Friday morning.

Passing motorists alerted the emergency services to the accident at the Simona crossing where the road from Garrucha town joins the A370 highway.

Sadly the medical crew were only able to certify the 65-year-old’s death.

Car con THE payment of nearly €26,000 for a topof-the-range vehicle which never materia l i s e d , l e d t o t h e a rrest of a 26-year old man on fraud charges.

Guardia Civil detained MRH from Vicar, after a woman reported she had made a number of payments adding up to €25,900 for an Audi Q5 to a person she knew who bought and sold second-hand vehicles, mostly brought in from Germany.

According to the woman, the detainee failed to produce the car and did not sign the sales contract, giving her a succession of excuses and repeatedly putting back the delivery date. Nor did he give h e r b a c k h e r m o n e y, she said.

Green light for road updates

SPEEDY: The competitors had to solve the puzzle as quickly as possible.

Rubik rivalry IT was the battle of the Rubik’s cubes in Huercal-Overa last week.

More than 40 pupils from the municipal institutes competed to solve the legendary puzzle in the

fastest possible time in the sixth Speed Cubing Championship.

Only three youngsters made it to the final following two knockout rounds in which players had to get all the colours matched up

within a set time limit.

In the end it was Juan Jose Mena Sanchez from the Cura Valera Institute who emerged overall winner after completing the puzzle in just 15.4 seconds.

THE provincial government has given the go-ahead to a €620,000 investment in Levante and Almanzora Valley region roads.

The road connecting Albox and the A327 in Huercal-Overa via Taberno, the AL-3016 running from the A7 dual-carriageway in Nijar to Las Negras via Campohermoso and Fernan Perez, and the AL5407 goi ng f r om t he AL- 3102 t o t he A-1178 in Bacares, are due to be resurfaced.

Also earmarked for resurfacing, as well as for improvements to the drainage, is the AL-7102 going from Cantoria to the A334 in Albox via Almanzora.

Provincial Public Works Deputy Oscar Liria maintained the works will benefit residents, businesses and local economies.

Improved safety will be one important improvement, he said. The improved communication between towns will also encourage tourists to visit the areas and for people to consider moving to inland parts of the province, according to the deputy.

“The connection between the province’s 103 municipalities is an indispensable foundation for its future,” he commented.

Go-ahead ADRA mayor Manuel Cortes has signed a works contract for the €180,000 extension of the La Curva building and medical centre.

An additional floor will be built and a second consultation room added.

First aid TABERNAS Council has installed defibrillators at the municipal sports centre and the football ground, enabling rapid reaction by trained people in the event of a cardiac arrest case while waiting for the emergency services.

Walk for Life donations still coming in THE annual Arboleas Walk for Life to raise money to help local cancer sufferers has raised over €2,500, and donations are still coming in.

Cecilia Molina Verdu cut the starter tape on behalf of the AECC Spanish cancer charity, and 240 people set off to walk or run the three or six-kilometre routes in the May 4 event.

Many more went along to cheer them on and to enjoy the post-race party.

First under-16 was 12-year-old Alannah Innes Bedford, who ran three kilometres. First dog and owner were Paul Day with Lily, who walked three kilometres.

Death threats detention A MAN who hurled insults and death threats at Local Police officers in HuercalOvera found himself under arrest.

The detention came when a patrol went to investigate a

fight in the Montecastillo area of the town. They found a group of young people hanging around a bench. One of them was clearly very angry judging by his gestures and the shouts which could

be heard from some distance.

When officers approached the man, identified as 28year old KMS, he refused to calm down and continued with an aggressive attitude and gestures.

THE newly restored public laundry in Nijar village has become the municipality’s latest must-see place of interest.

Located in Calle Era, the site has the additional attraction that four of the pillars feature works by local artisans Matthew Weir, Baldomero Garcia, Rafael Granados and Sophie Cuende.

Tourism Councillor Alexis Pineda said the restoration works on the old laundry and its history made it “an obligatory visit for anyone who wants to know more about the customs of the town and its crafts.”

There are also two other renovated laundries in the municipality, one in La Isleta del Moro and one in Fernan Perez.

Freddie Starr dies FREDDIE STARR, the British comedian, impressionist and singer, has died aged 76 at his home on the Costa

del Sol according to his manager.

Starr’s manager confirmed the news on Facebook last Thursday. Coroners told Euro Weekly News on Friday that post-mortem tests showed he had died of coronary heart disease.

Starr had previously said he wanted to die in ‘the place I love.’

A British funeral director has offered to repatriate his body and hold a service for free after his family found themselves struggling to pay roughly €3,240 for a Spanish burial.

Comedian Bobby Davro, one of those who paid tribute to Starr on social media, said: “He was the funniest man I have ever seen.”

Starr was born Frederick Leslie Fowell in Huyton in Lancashire. He performed with The Midnighters Merseybeat group before breaking into mainstream British popular culture with

an appearance on the Opportunity Knocks talent show.

Starr later became known for his eccentric behaviour and was famously accused of eating a friend’s hamster in 1986.

He later claimed in his 2001 autobiography Unwrapped that the story was false.

The 1990s saw Starr front a number of TV shows including The Freddie Starr Show.

The comedian was later dogged by allegations of sexual abuse. He was arrested in 2012 and 2014 before the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case Starr moved to the Costa del Sol after losing a defamation case against his accuser in 2015.

“I thought ‘I’m not going to tell anyone, I’m just going to get on a plane and go to Spain, the place I love, and this is where I’m going to die’,” he later said.

Starr leaves behind six children.

Cancellation fee fury ONE mother is calling on travel company TUI to refund her money after she was reportedly charged £200 (€232) to cancel a ‘free’ holiday place for her child.

Gemma Disson told one publication she had chosen to holiday in Spain because it included a free place for her four-year-old daughter. The family were due to travel to Menorca in May but had to cancel their £1,000 (€1,160) trip for family reasons. While Gemma told British media she expected to pay a cancellation fee for her and her partner, she was angry to learn she would also have to pay another fee for her daughter’s place.

Ms Disson claims she wrote to TUI in February to query the charge but has not heard back. Her letter explained: “I appreciate the cost of £200 per person in fees and I expected that for myself and my partner but not for my daughter.

“We booked the holiday on the pretence that there was a FREE child place which indeed was correct.”

A TUI spokesperson said the company would be in touch with the family ‘to resolve the matter.’

Erwan de la Villeon, CEO of Puy du Fou Spain, which is building the park, said it would create more than 2,450 jobs in the area and 3,329 by 2028, including jobs created by the boost to the local economy.

Puy du Fou sources said entrance to the park would be €26, with a package available for €42.

Central bank economy warning SPAIN’S central bank has said global economic growth will likely slow down this year amidst ongoing uncertainty and risk. The Bank of Spain said the ongoing trade war between the US and other parts of the world, Brexit and slowdown in China’s economy were among the factors slowing growth.

“Any of these events or a combination of them would have an impact on the global economy, which could become significant, meaning economic stabilisation policies have a limited scope for action,” the bank’s report said.

The bank forecasts world economy will grow by 3.3 per cent this year, three 10ths less than in 2018.

Growth prospect for the EU have been reduced ‘remarkably’, according to the Bank of Spain. Factors affecting it include ongoing unrest in France due to the Gilet Jauntes (Yellow Vest) protests and the ongoing recession in Italy.

The ‘black legend’ refers to the negative image of Spain promoted by English and other writers from the 16th century onwards.

The Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise is one of several studied in the book. Boisseau said it

was one example of derogatory images of Spanish people being used to entertain English-speaking audiences.

“The message conveyed in Pirates of the Caribbean is one of robbing, torturing and killing Spaniards who sell, buy and abuse Hispanic women and loot,” Boisseau said.

Boisseau writes that while between 3,000 and 5,000 people were killed in more than three centuries in connection with the Inquisition, more than 50,000 Catholics were executed in Henry VIII’s reign alone.

The book claims the negative images were promoted from the late 19th century onwards as the US sought to discredit Spain while it fought for dominance in the American continent.

The stereotypes were used to partly justify the US’ war against Spain over Cuba in 1898, Boisseau writes.

BREXIT BRIEF Election latest CAMPAIGNING for the EU elections in Britain is now in full swing, with significant upsets anticipated as new Brexit-focused groups look set to siphon votes away from established parties.

An Opinium poll for The Observer suggested Nigel Farage’s new Brexit Party could win more votes than the Conservatives and Labour combined.

The party polled at 34 per cent, ahead of Labour in second place with 21 per cent, the Liberal Democrats in third and the Conservatives in fourth.

Conservative losses have by and large come from leave-supporting Tories ditching the party in droves ahead of the election on Thursday May 23. Labour has also suffered from the same effect, but to a lesser degree.

The Liberal Democrats appear to have taken up the mantle of being the remain party after making extensive gains in local elections earlier this month.

Change UK, formerly The Independent Group which was spawned by Labour and Conservative defections earlier this year, languishes in last place with 3 per cent.

That party had originally sought to pitch itself as the leading advocate for remain, but has been dogged by scandals while struggling to build its identity and momentum.

Call for vote

By Joe Gerrard THE possibility of Britain’s Brexit impasse being settled by a second referendum has increased after a leading Labour opposition’s figure said a deal would not pass without a public vote.

Shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer said his party would be unable to provide Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal with a workable majority without a second referendum.

Starmer is currently leading talks for Labour with the ruling Conservatives which seek to reach a cross-party agreement on getting a deal through Westminster.

“A significant number of Labour MPs, probably 120 if not 150, would not back a deal if it hasn’t got a confirmatory vote,” Starmer told British media. Labour deputy leader Tom Watson said it would be difficult to enforce a Brexit agreement without a second vote.

Talks continue

By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S prime minister has completed a round of talks with other party leaders as he continues to seek a coalition deal following April’s general election.

Pedro Sanchez has not yet said which party or parties he will work with going forward.

He met with the leaders of the conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and the leftist Podemos last week.

PP leader Pablo Casado’s turn came first. By election day on Sunday April 28, it appeared the relationship between the two was in disrepair, with each trading heavy rhetorical blows in the run up to the vote.

Their meeting appeared to show a thawing of relations, with the two agreeing to open a direct line of communication on the ongoing Catalan inde-

Casado, who is still dealing with the fallout from the election which saw the PP score its worst result in its history, said his party would not back Sanchez’s reinvestment.

Talks between Sanchez and Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera came next. Rivera offered to support Sanchez if he chose to reinstate Article 155 in Cataluña, the constitutional mechanism

used to suspend its regional government and impose direct rule in 2017.

The Ciudadanos leader said his party would be a firm but loyal opposition force. He previously ruled out working with the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) while Sanchez remains its leader.

Sanchez then met with Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias.

Their talks follow 10 months

of PSOE and Podemos co-operation in the Congress of Deputies since PSOE came to power last June.

Sources from both parties said they had built trust and understanding between them in that time, possibly laying the foundations for a coalition deal.

Iglesias told reporters after the meeting he and Sanchez had ‘agreed to agree.’ Both sides said the meeting was positive and the two had been able to find common ground on a number of issues.

Party sources suggest there will not be further meetings between the two until after local, regional and EU elections on Sunday May 26.

But the two have agreed to work together during the Congreso investiture vote which Sanchez needs to win to stay on as prime minister. It is due to take place on Tuesday.

Local forecast THE left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) is on course to take control of several authorities in local and regional elections on Sunday May 26, new polling suggests.

Spain’s Centre for Sociological Investigation (CIS) forecast PSOE would win in 10 of the 12 regions up for grabs, including in the conservative Partido Popular’s (PP) Murcia stronghold.

PSOE is set to fall just short of an absolute majority, 16, in Sevilla City, winning between 13 and 15 council seats with 42.3 per cent of the vote.

PSOE is also set to surge in Zaragoza City, becoming the second-largest party with between eight and nine councillors in a typically PP-safe city.

The PP is still set to win there and get between nine and 10 councillors, but PSOE could join with other leftist parties to wrestle control from them.

Regionalist party Compromis is set to win the most seats, between nine and 11, in Valencia City. PSOE looks set to come second with between six and eight councillors.

City-focused parties Mas Madrid and Barcelona en Comu look set to be the largest parties in the Spanish and Catalan capitals.

Jobs face automation AROUND one in five Spanish jobs could soon be done by robots as automation continues to move into more industries, the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has said.

The percentage of Spanish jobs which could disappear altogether, almost 22 per cent, is above the OECD average of 14 per cent.

Other OECD figures showed the cost of retraining workers who face redundancy due to machines would be about 0.85 per cent of Spanish economic output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP).

That would be more than €995 million based on Spain’s GDP of almost €1.2 trillion in 2017.

It comes as the OECD said in March that more than half of all Spanish jobs were at risk of a ‘significant’ loss or transformation due to automation.

Farming plan moves forward

ARRESTED: 31 suspects have been arrested as part of an international sting.

Paedophile network POLICE have arrested three people in Spain on suspicion of belonging to a network of online paedophiles.

The Guardia Civil claim a videoconferencing platform was being used by several groups to film children and disseminate the footage.

The operation, which was part of an international sting, saw a total of 31 people arrested and 145 victims identified, mostly girls aged between eight and 14 years old.

The majority of the arrests and victims

were in the United States, while eight victims were identified in Spain.

According to police, the paedophile rings all used similar techniques, including using ‘hunters’ to track down children to abuse through social media, and ‘loopers,’ those tasked with creating the videos.

The first arrest within the operation in Spain was in February 2018 in Alicante, and saw a suspect sentenced to 180 years in prison for 38 separate child pornography charges.

SPAIN’S central government has confirmed plans for the future of the country’s Common Agricultural Policy are advancing well.

Luis Planas, acting Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, said there had been ‘great cooperation’ between the government and Spain’s autonomous communities.

Planas will next week travel

to Brussels to meet with his counterparts to discuss the policy. He explained the first step will be to create two working groups to study profitability of farms and how to include young people in the profession.

The minister said the work is expected to be finished within a year and a half to meet the European Union’s timetables.

Schools strike A SPANISH labour union has called a countrywide strike at nursery schools on Tuesday.

The CCOO argues teachers are not being paid an adequate salary for their levels of responsibility and training.

The union said: “We demand working conditions that suit the commendable work that thousands of children in preschool education have been receiving in return for salaries that do not reach €900 gross a month.”

It added: “Going forward, the proposed deal would flagrantly violate the State Collective Bargaining Agreement, which states that no agreement will be below €1,000 in 2020.”

Regions make taxation cuts THE Balearic Islands, Murcia and Valencia are among the seven regions which have offered new tax deductions ahead of this month’s local elections.

The Balearic Islands has offered a deduction of 40 per cent on the cost of childcare, including those of nurseries and nannies. Murcia has offered a similar deduction of 20 per cent, with a maximum of €660 per child.

Santander in jobs talks SPANISH bank Santander is meeting with trade union representatives as it aims to avoid making redundancies during corporate restructuring which could affect more than 3,000 workers.

The bank and the CCOO union are negotiating the company’s Employment Regulation File (ERE), plans firms have to put into place for staff if corporate decisions put jobs at risk.

Santander said any agreement reached with unions would be struck in accordance with Article 12 of Spain’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, the law which governs negotiations over potential job losses.

The CCOO said it would aim to get Santander to agree to saving as many jobs as possible. Workers offered early retirement packages should get a ‘sufficient’ payoff to provide long-term stability, the union added.

“This should allow them to leave in an

orderly and stress-free manner,” the union said.

Another union, UGT, said staff could not continue to pay the price for company restructuring.

Current talks come as Santander announced plans to close 140 branches in Britain, cutting 1,270 jobs, in January.

The bank’s British arm said branch transactions had fallen by 23 per cent during the last three years, while the use of online banking has risen.

Retail banking head in Britain Susan Allen said: “The way clients relate to the bank has changed dramatically in recent years.”

PRIVATE EQUITY firm KKR now has a majority stake in Spanish fast food chain Telepizza after buying more than a quarter of its stock for almost €28 million.

The firm and its partners made its stock offer through the Tasty Bidco entity, according to Spain’s National Securities and Markets Commission.

KKR now controls about 56.3 per cent of Telepizza either directly or indirectly, up from the almost 28.6 per cent before the purchase.

Some rival stockholders of Telepizza had previously refused to sell their stakes.

Janus Nielsen, of the AnyTech 365 IT support firm, said it contracts with technology and appliance companies to offer help to customers experiencing technical problems with devices. His company re-

cently ranked 27th in the Financial Times’ Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies table.

“We offer the first service for free and then we ask if the client wants to subscribe for a fee. About 30 per cent do so,” Neilsen said.

Times have changed LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NO blacks. No Irish and no dogs. This is the oft publicised ‘unacceptable face of racism,’ of the late 50’s and early 60’s, when landladies, letting out rooms in areas of London and other cities posted this on the doors and windows of their establishments.

By today’s standards these signs do of course appear utterly disgusting and totally unacceptable. But times have changed drastically since those far more insular and uninformed times.

Back then, these were not blanket judgements, simply because of someone’s skin colour or country of origin. They were decisions made because of the general reputation gained by those who were considered foreigners at that time. Many Irish were not welcomed by landladies because the vast majority worked the roads and building sites, and on weekends were renowned for arriving back at all hours and keeping all the other tenants awake by bellowing Irish ditties at the tops of their voices.

People of colour had, in the main, only recently arrived from countries which were far less developed than the UK, with many having never even seen a toilet or experienced abodes with running water. Through no fault of their own, their general stan-

dards of living were vastly different to the locals.

The landladies simply couldn’t cope with the culture differences. As for dogs, this was in no way a comparison. Merely that landladies didn’t want the barking to annoy the other tenants. We weren’t racists; we were merely treating those around us as we found them.

I personally NEVER judged people by creed or colour. In those heady flower-power days, I truly did believe the UK was the forerunner of how the whole world would be one day; convinced that in the words of Blue Mink and Madeline Bell, (who I know still peruses this column) that all we did indeed require was a great big melting pot, turning out coffee coloured people by the score!

For a time I lived in Bayswater’s All Saints Road.

At the end of the road was a pub frequented mainly by the black neighbourhood community. I was often the only white face in the pub and thoroughly enjoyed the company and the Ska and reggae music while enveloped in the vaguely sweet aroma of ‘pot.’ No racism there either.

Some years later I returned to reminisce in the area which held so many memories. The taxi driver wouldn’t even drive down the street! I walked to the packed, still wholly black clientele pub and after a few minutes made the decision to leave because of the uncomfortable silence which had descended over the whole establishment. I truly was utterly

Believe me, we were never the racists. Generally we welcomed those from different societies. We never envisaged that our liberal attitude would in later years bring the threat of other religions and cultures trying to alter our whole way of life and democratic liberty. No wonder the UK is now infested with racist views.

When you find yourself arguing racism with some snowflake or another, remember to remind them of one thing. Those people had all the best intentions in the world. And now find their very freedom of speech threatened! Just saying…

Interview with Rosa Maria Cano, the mayor of Mojacar YOU have been mayor of Mojacar for various terms. In your opinion, what makes you win the elections?

The people of Mojacar have always supported us for the work we have done. They have placed their trust both in me and in the team of councillors which are responsible for the various areas, because they have been able to verify they work honestly and with real results.

With every election campaign from the opposition parties there are always rumours of discrediting around the Mojacar elections.

It is a shame, the image which they cast in the media of the Mojacar society. In the absence of arguments to criticise our management and work, what they try to do is to divert the attention of the voter, who on the other hand is clear that the balance of our work is very positive.

The Mojacar residents can’t be fooled. We won because we are an experienced team, involved with Mojacar and its people, prepared and willing to lead the Mojacar of the 21st century.

Never in the previous history of Mojacar have so many actions been carried out within the different areas: Infrastructure, social welfare, culture, sports events, tourism, etc. Proof of this is the increase and consolidation of quality hotel offerings, investment, quality compliance certifications, improvement of our local infrastructures, etc.

Another point to note is that we have a solvent town council, in which businesses and neighbours trust.

Those that know you, say that you’re a hard worker, constant and you dedicate almost 100 per cent of your time to Mojacar. What is your work plan for the next four years?

Always working to improve

Mojacar, the lives of those who live here, and of course, the thousands of people who visit us year after year.

In tourism, to continue with the third phase of the strategic plan which we started two terms ago, based on the strength and opportunities we can offer as a tourist destination, we have launched into new tourist segments such as sports, cultural and family tourism. Always working with the businesses in the tourist sector.

We will continue with the national and international promotion campaigns. As an example I can mention that last season thanks to a good marketing campaign which we developed in eight British markets, we managed to increase by 92 per cent, the number of British visitors staying in Mojacar hotels from May to October.

The Old Town, declared in 2013 as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, the certification as the first Family Tourism destination in Andalucia, international sporting events, the quality certification of our beaches, etc. They are examples of work done well. Work where the participation of local businesses has been basic and fundamental.

Specifically on the beaches we have achieved the distinction SICTED (Tourism Quality Commitment of the Ministry of Tourism), Blue flags and especially the modification to several beaches to make them friendlier for people with reduced mobility with shaded areas, adapted showers, wider paths etc.

In our Heritage, we have committed to the archaeological excavation of the Mojacar la Vieja site, which is of great importance and which has already meant for Mojacar a new dimension in the cultural image we project, without neglecting the hundreds of positive impacts in the press. Since April, the reg-

CANO: Focused on residents and tourists. istration period is open for archaeologists who will be coming to take part in phase two of the excavation this July.

In Infrastructure, having met the improvement objectives for lighting, both in more built-up areas and also in the less urban areas, with asphalt and improvement of streets and roads, improvements made to pavements etc, for people with reduced mobility, now we will continue with the bypass; a wider route from the petrol station to the area of Cueva del Lobo, which, following the current route, will eliminate some of the harder bends and where permitted, extend the width.

This work, which was initially projected years ago with great environmental impact, will now be much more respectful with the environment.

We will build a new medical centre and a bus station, in the intermediate area between the beach and the village.

In the social welfare field, we will see the residency for the elderly finished; a resource which we urgently need, since our elders, many of them far from their families deserve a decent place for their care and rest.

Mojacar is a town with a multicultural population, especially from northern Europe. How do you manage to govern and be the mayor of all?

We have always had a dedicated councillor to deal directly with our foreign residents. As a kind of one-stop, this councillor helps to solve directly, in their own language, each and every one of the issues which may arise. I can tell you that many of them are of an older age and that from the town hall, very important social welfare work is carried out.

At the medical centre, the town hall also offers at the reception desk, service to the ill in English. Very popular are our

free Spanish classes for foreigners, geronto-gymnastics classes, or the free bus pass voucher for all our over 65 residents, which among other things allows them to take part in cultural activities and workshops which they are always happy to participate in.

Likewise, we collaborate closely with the numerous associations that, with different concerns, participate with their suggestions in the plans of this town council (Animal defence, Cancer Patients Support Association, sports associations, Dames of Spain, etc.)

A good example could be our municipal bowling green, a sport they requested to be able to play locally for our close collaboration with MACS. In Mojacar, besides having all the services, they find an open society in which they can integrate and a complete range of activities.

You have recently approved the General Urban Plan of Mojacar, a pending issue which the town had. What would you highlight about this plan and what can the residents of Mojacar and its visitors understand?

The General Urban Plan ‘PGOU’ was approved provisionally in 2017 and recently in 2019 definitively.

The General Plan organises the territory and is the basis for the implementation of health facilities, transport, commercial areas, etc. This plan thinks about the future and contemplates the natural growth of the city and the location of future homes, if necessary, are demanded.

Mayor, are you against the chiringuitos?

Absolutely no. It is another of the urban legends orchestrated to mask the extension of the Mojacar Promenade, completely paralysed by the interest of two businessmen who today take a huge economic benefit by exploiting private businesses on

public land. Selfishly they are not prepared to give up a few metres (which on the other hand do not belong to them) in favour of an infrastructure which offers road safety, a better image and is an important tourist resource.

And the funny thing is, they have found all the political support in the opposition.

They are the reason that as of today, Phase three of the Promenade is not built and we are not receiving the congratulations of tourist agents, tourists, families and residents who demand it from us daily.

They have sold the idea that we want to destroy the chiringuitos, when it is not true at all.

The immense majority of the businesses on the beach clearly see that the promenade will benefit them and the town.

How do you feel now that various tourist destinations imitate Mojacar in the control of ‘drunken tourism?’

It is the local residents and businesses who ask us for both the promenade, and that we control the drunken tourism which is causing so much damage in other tourist destinations.

Enforcing the current law, protecting the visitor who comes to rest, and of course the resident who has the right to live without being startled, is our duty.

We have tackled this problem in Mojacar, and certainly many destinations in the Balearic Islands, Costa del Sol, etc who have followed us in matters to sort this. So much so, for this general problem the EU is studying to create a specific ruling of application in tourist areas. We cannot allow bars to be discotheques, since they do not meet the requirements for this.

We cannot permit that people who have chosen to live here decide to leave, that the tour operators terminate contracts, that the residents suffer with the consequences of ‘anything goes’ for the benefit of a few.

What a transformation!

ONE of the great joys of the Christian experience is that we never quite know what God may have in mind for us. We can be plodding along in an everyday routine when all of a sudden God delivers an unexpected change or challenge, which whilst possibly unwelcome at the time, will subsequently be recognised as immensely beneficial. No space for boredom then!

And there’s no better example of this than in the story of Saul of Tarsus; a man who, as a very religious member of one of the strictest sects in Judaism, had devoted his life to destroying the embryo Christian Church. So in Acts 9 we read of him ‘breathing threats and destruction’ and taking a small army with him into Damascus to arrest any he found there who were followers of Jesus. That was how he started his day, completely unaware of the plans God had in mind, but to everyone’s amazement, the man who reached Damascus was a humbled, gentler person, wanting to learn more of Jesus and seeking forgiveness, restoration and baptism into this new faith.

So far from destroying, he became the great-

est advocate of the Christian faith, building Churches throughout the known world and revered for all time as the great apostle Paul!

What an incredible transformation! There’s no human explanation, but Saul himself explains that just before reaching his destination, he was thrown to the ground, blinded by a brilliant light and hearing a voice, which he recognised as Jesus, challenging him. And no matter what challenges, torture and eventual execution he later faced, this extremely logical and precise man remained absolutely constant in his assertion that he had met the risen Jesus (two or three years after his crucifixion) on that day near Damascus, and it had been he who had so changed his life.

And that, as mentioned earlier, is so often our own, perhaps less dramatic experience, as we in our daily lives can be confronted by Christ, challenging and redirecting our thinking and presuppositions. So let us each, especially during this post Easter season, take a moment or two to pause and allow Jesus to meet us, and through his spirit see where we may need change.

Because the truth is it was an absolute nightmare. Have any of you tried to replace a laptop recently? The actual conversation was more like ‘I’d like a new laptop please.’ He says, ‘What type? There’s chrome books, a traditional laptop, Subnotebook, Netbook, Convertible, hybrid, 2in-1, desktop replacement, rugged laptop, business laptop, MacBooks, solid state, dual or quad core. Then he wants to know if she wants touch screen. Why would we want touch screen? It’s just going to get filthy dirty with fingerprints.

They had the chat about the difference between solid state and dual or quad core and basically it all boils down to how fast it starts up, but it’s a little more complicated than that. More cores are faster only if a program can split its tasks between the

cores. A newer dual core CPU with a higher clock speed will often outperform an older quad core CPU with a lower clock speed.

Got that? Cos I certainly haven’t a clue!

Then there’s solid state, which is not like having a normal hard disk, where you store all your stuff. With this you have to store everything on ‘a cloud’ of your choice.

By now I am on the ‘phone trying to tell the assistant that she’s not going to be gaming or downloading loads of movies or designing a new shopping centre. All she really wants is a glorified typewriter with a screen and I guess that’s what most older people want. Why does everything have to be so confusing? We finally came up with a laptop that suits her purpose perfectly. But I’m sure it could be a lot simpler.

Then the next part of the sales quiz game started - do we want to buy this recommended anti-virus and, of course, you will need to buy Windows Office and do you want the extended warranty and on and on.

I already have anti-virus and I use a free office suite that is fine and no I don’t want the extended warranty. Finally she gets it home and the next battle starts. Microsoft wants you to log in with your account which I don’t want and off we go again me against the system!

Seafront scam

I WAS disgusted but not surprised to read about the group of 26 people who were arrested for allegedly scamming tourists on Palma beach.

Wherever high levels of holidaymakers concentrate there always seem to be people who seek to take advantage of those letting their guard down while away from home.

However, while I sympathise with those who have lost their money on these ‘games,’ I was a little shocked that adult tourists had been taken in by the group. It seems to prove the old adage true, ‘if it seems too good to be true, it is.’

French air strikes HI Leapy, I have to compliment you on very detailed articles in the Euro Weekly News , we look forward to continue reading them online here in Ireland.

Sometime, if you think it’s worth mentioning, you might mention the fallout of the effects of the continuing French air traffic controllers strike.

On May 8, we were affected by this action for the second time, the large expense of rehiring a car, and for some, hotel fees etc. There was little mention of this in the news anywhere.

Surely, as this ongoing dispute affects many countries in Europe, it should be an issue for the European Parliament to get involved, in the form of mediation, and indeed put pressure on both sides, to reach a settlement.

I am going to write to the MEPs going up for election to see what they have to say about this issue.

Keep up the great articles, and looking forward to reading them online.

Points raised RE: An arrogant affront (Issue 1765).

Might I say I have enjoyed reading your articles since I came to Spain and always seem to agree with what your views are.

However this I feel has moved me to put something in writing. Both points mentioned are a disgrace. I cannot believe these things are happening and no one in England stands up and speaks.

The Sri Lankan atrocity was far more devastating than New Zealand and as you say hardly mentioned.

I’m sure if you were Prime Minster things would get sorted, but the downside is you would have to go back to the UK, something I certainly don’t want to do.

OUR VIEW More action needed THE news that Spanish emissions fell by a higher rate than the EU average last year is welcome, but action on climate change must be stepped up to avoid catastrophe.

Emissions in Spain fell by 3.2 per cent last year, according to the Eurostat data agency. The EU average was 2.5 per cent, with both figures well below that of Portugal’s which dropped by 9 per cent.

Climate change is the single-biggest existential threat to the survival of our species and to the natural world we depend on.

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned we have 11 years to drastically change climate policies to prevent irreversible damage.

As leading naturalist David Attenborough said in a recent documentary, a failure to do so would mean the end of civilisation as we know it.

Here in Spain we are likely to see more heat waves, droughts and desertification of once-arable farmland.

Flash floods like the ones which struck Mallorca and the Costa Blanca this year and Malaga Province last year will also increase, and several of Spain’s native animals will disappear. The current left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government has promised a raft of measures to wean Spain off fossil fuels and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, also the EU’s target.

But progress must be accelerated and the fossil fuel industry should shoulder a heavy burden of the effort given it brought us to the brink of a climate cataclysm.

Dramatic rescue: Five girls found after going missing in southern Spain The Guardia Civil mountain rescue team are brilliant. I took a wrong turning on top of Mt Maroma a couple of weeks ago and ran out of food and energy and ended up trying to sleep through the night under bits of grass half way up the mountain. Yet Mountain Rescue found me and helped me back down at 3.30 in the morning. I felt like an idiot as I am an experienced walker, but it was a lesson for me and the rescue guys were superb, hats off to them.

As my 72-year-old dad embarked on this way of eating, he didn’t want complicated menus or strict instructions of what to eat, and certainly wouldn’t entertain tracking his meals in an app on his phone!

So I kept it simple. Two lists. One list of foods to eat for five days a week, and another list of what to eat

CHANGING DIET: Understand what you can eat and what to avoid. on two days a week. That’s all. By following a very basic format of carb cycling, it has been enough for him mentally to understand the process and as a result has shed 25lb (11kg).

Some people do prefer to track every meal and plan every day to the very last mouthful.

Which is fine, and everybody digests information differently and needs a different level of control

over how they manage it.

Baked Dorada with preserved lemon sauce THIS week has been busy in the Olive Tree Farm kitchen.

As the weather has warmed up, it has been a pleasure to sit outside and enjoy meals in the fresh air. I have tried a few new recipes out and this week’s recipe is one of them.

Dorada, or Gilt-Head Bream in English, is white fleshed fish with a creamy texture. Although you can get quite large ones, they are nice to serve as a whole fish for one person, so the smaller ones are excellent for this purpose. Once baked

the skin becomes crisp and the flesh is very easy to remove from the bones. The lemon sauce was made using some of my preserved lemons. It is a tart sauce, but by adding honey to your own taste, it reduces the sharpness and it is the perfect accompaniment for fish.

• Ingredients 1 small Dorada per person Olive oil Dill (Eneldo) - Dried or fresh finely chopped One large lemon - cut one slice off for each fish you

are baking Salt and black pepper For the preserved lemon sauce One whole preserved lemon - wash and soak in a couple of fresh water changes for about an hour to reduce the salt level Olive oil Honey 1 finely sliced clove of garlic Black pepper Half a fresh lemon for the juice • Method The fish - wash and dry each fish. Take a sheet of baking foil or baking paper per fish, and spray or brush with a little olive oil. Brush the fish with a little more olive oil.

Season the fish inside and out, insert a lemon slice into the opening on the belly of the fish and sprinkle inside and on the skin with the dill.

Wrap the fish in the foil or paper to seal in the juices in individual parcels. Place on a

baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 200ºC for around 25 minutes.

Uncover and grill for another five minutes to crisp off the skin. Whilst it is baking make the sauce.

The lemon sauce - warm three or four tablespoons of olive oil in a pan along with the slices of garlic. Heat it through over a medium heat for a few minutes. You do not want the garlic to brown, you just want the flavours to taint the oil.

Leave to cool. Remove the garlic with a slotted spoon and set aside.

After rinsing and soaking the preserved lemons, place them, skin and flesh, in a food processor along with two tablespoons of the cooled olive oil, the garlic, a tablespoon of honey, a squirt of fresh lemon juice and black pepper. Do not add salt.

Whizz it until it is smooth.

Add more olive oil until you get a nice silky consistency.

Taste and add more black pepper or honey to your own palette.

Serve the fish whilst hot on a bed of green salad leaves, along with the sauce. I kept the sauce separate from the fish.

A side dish of couscous or rice makes a nice accompaniment. And don’t forget the white wine!

NB - If you burn the garlic when warming it for the sauce, start again, as it will have a bitter taste.

OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency.

We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Pride of place A PIECE of crystal from the Roman mine in Los Higuerales in Arboleas currently has pride of place in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid.

The piece is on show in the museum’s patio of the Emperors until June 23 as part of Miguel Angel Blanco’s, Lapis Specularis. La luz bajo tierra (the underground light) exhibition, combining crystalised gypsum with Roman collections. Other medium-sized pieces of crystal from the Ar-

boleas mine have meanwhile been sent to the Bramante Shrine at the San Pietro in Montorio church in Rome.

Posting on the Arboleas Council Facebook page, Mayor Cristobal Garcia Granados said the local authority “is very proud that our historic heritage is reaching such a high consideration and representation in the most important museums in Spain,” adding, “the presence in the shrine is the icing on the satisfaction cake.”

SOME of Almeria’s most exciting young flamenco talents are performing in Albox, Arboleas and Velez-Rubio next month.

The La Milonga Flamenca company, which fuses the music and dance of flamenco and tango, is one of the main acts taking part in this year’s Provincial Flamenco Circuit.

The company will be appearing in Velez-Rubio’s Teatro Ovalo on June 1, in Albox’s Plaza de San Francisco on June 7, and at the Pedro Gilabert Museum on June 15.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Almeria provincial government flamenco circuit, which aims to take the art across the province, and especially to municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants.

Dog fosterers needed THE Animal Protection Society Albox (APSA) is appealing for more volunteer dog fosterers.

Many dogs in APSA’s care are too young or too small to be in kennels, or may be recovering from neutering or operations. Some elderly dogs have lost their owners and just need to be in a home.

The charity says dogs have more chance of being homed successfully if they have been in a normal environment.

Fosterers can look after a dog for a few days or have them for longer term stays.

Linda Nurse has been an APSA fosterer for two years. She started when her own dog died, finding it helped her get over the loss and keeps her busy.

Linda has fostered 11 dogs, mainly puppies. She finds the work rewarding when homes

The first Diesis Orchestra and Ensemble concerts were staged last weekend in Purchena, Taberno, Zurgena and Cuevas del Almanzora, and continue this weekend.

The Diesis woodwind quintet is performing on Friday at the Velez-Rubio Regional Museum at 8.30pm and on Saturday at the Rafael Alberti Cultural Hall in Albanchez, also 8.30pm. The programme features pieces by Haydn, P Hindemith,

17th century Hungarian dances by Farkas, and a Moment for Morricone arrangement. The idea of the circuits is ‘to develop an interest and a love for classical music among the residents of our province’s smallest municipalities,’ said Almeria Council Culture deputy Antonio J Rodriguez.

The deputy pointed out most of the musicians performing are native Almerians. “This is a great satisfaction for us, as it again confirms the great talent pool of musicians there are in our land, and their level and quality,” he remarked. Entry is free.

Honda’s electric pledge HONDA has confirmed it will produce its first fully electric urban vehicle - the rather unimaginative sounding ‘Honda e.’

And it has also said that the next-generation Jazz will be available with a hybrid powertrain featuring the brand’s Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) technology.

The manufacturer says that this is part of its ‘Electric Vision’ to make 100 per cent of the brand’s European sales feature electrified powertrains by 2025. The Honda e, which was recently presented as a production prototype in Geneva, is Honda’s first model to benefit from a dedicated EV platform rather than be converted from a traditionally-powered design. This means it is optimised for electric power through its design and technology with no compromises.

Some of the world’s most powerful and fastest cars cruise the roads of the capital of the UAE, but this gives the local traffic police a bit of a problem.

If someone really wants to put their foot down in a McLaren, Ferrari or Lamborghini, how on earth are you going to catch them?

Well they have decided that if you want to catch a su-

percar you must use - a supercar.

So the latest addition to the Abu Dhabi police fleet is a 750bhp £2 million Lykan Hypersport.

Best known for its role in Fast and Furious 7 (when it flew!) just seven of the superluxury cars have ever been built.

With a 3.7-litre twin turbo flat six engine it is capable of 242mph, with a 0-62mph time of 2.8 seconds, so fast enough

to keep up with even the most spoiled Arab prince.

The doors are rear-hinged and open upwards. The leather has gold thread stitched into it.

The LED headlights have diamonds in them and the car has a more suitable paintjob as a police vehicle.

Italian Job Lamborghini rediscovered IT was a scene to make any lover of beautiful cars weep - the shot in iconic movie The Italian Job where a Lamborghini Miura P400 is destroyed in an on-screen incident.

But all was not as it seemed as clever cinematography actually meant the on-screen car that was ‘destroyed’ was actually a car that had already been crashed.

Now 50 years on from the release of the film Lamborghini Polo Storico has certified the Miura P400, chassis #3586, as the original uncrashed car used in the Paramount Pictures film (1969).

The orange Miura P400 with white/black leather interior has been the most pursued Miura in recent decades: it appears in the film driven by the actor Rossano Brazzi on the Great St Bernard Pass. In the movie plot the car is destroyed, but nobody would have really ruined what

Just a few years after the film’s release, once it had been established that the car used in filming was not the one destroyed in the on-screen accident, a hunt began to find the opening-scene Miura. Over the following five decades, enthusiasts and collectors from around the world searched and amassed numerous and sometimes conflicting clues.

toric model, The Kaiser Collection of Vaduz (Liechtenstein), decided to consult Lamborghini Polo Storico in an attempt to give, once and for all, a chassis number to the Miura driven by Brazzi.

The car was sent to Lamborghini’s specialist historic department at its Sant’ Agata Bolognese headquarters, where Polo Storico’s reconstruction started from documentation in the company archives and from examining the car. The results were then supplemented with testimonies from enthusiasts and former employees, such as Enzo Moruzzi, who delivered the car to the set and drove it in all the shots as a stunt double.

By doing this, Polo Storico was able to find the missing evidence and certify that the Miura P400, chassis #3586, was exactly the one used to shoot The Italian Job. This recognition comes at the same time as the 50th anniversary celebrations of the film, released in June 1969.

The film production company, Paramount Pictures, approached Automobili Lamborghini for a car to use for the filming. Once they got to Sant’Agata Bolognese they decided on an orange-coloured Miura, which was already heavily damaged and therefore perfect for the accident scene. At the same time, Lamborghini provided a second car of the same colour for the shoot. It was Enzo Moruzzi who took the car to the set; in those days, he often delivered cars to the most important clients or onto film sets.

Moruzzi recalls: “There was a Miura P400 almost ready on the production line, in the right colour, left-hand drive and with white leather interior. It was aesthetically identical to the damaged one and we decided to use it for the film.”

Volvo S60 T5 R-Design Edition ROAD TEST

by Nick Fletcher VOLVO has completely changed the public perception of their brand with a range of new models encompassing svelte style and lots of technology and the latest is the justlaunched S60.

The new S60 is priced from €44,534 (£37,935) and packages a 250 hp 2.0-litre fourcylinder power unit with signature Volvo styling cues to reveal a smart and sophisticated premium saloon. Built in the United States, the S60 is the first new-model Volvo with no diesel engine option.

My test model was the T5 RDesign Edition and it ably demonstrated it was the perfect premium, mile-munching saloon. With a top speed of 233 kph (145 mph) the T5 passes the benchmark 100 kph in just 6.3 seconds. Average fuel economy is 13.1 kpl (37 mpg)

comfort. The shortest of gaps in traffic offers safe overtaking and on twisting country roads the car’s tight handling capability is demonstrated to great effect.

Standard fare across the range includes such items as dual zone climate, Nappa part-leather sports seats, heated front seats, diamond cut wheels, all-round parking sensors, voice activated con-

trol system and LED lighting.

Options on the test car were a powered glass tilt and slide panoramic sunroof with sun curtain, heated front screen, larger alloys and superb and almost iridescent Fusion Red metallic paintwork. This package adds €3,375 (£2,875) to the standard list price.

The range at the moment consists of one trim level - R-Design Edition and just one version, the T5 front drive automatic.

Soon to follow will be an allwheel-drive option, an R-Design Plus entry version and luxurious Inscription Plus trim. In addition to the T5 engine, a T8 twin-engine plugin hybrid is planned with prices starting at around €57,524 (£49,000).

By Dilip Kuner WHILE FC Barcelona have long since been crowned champions of La Liga, there is still lots to play for in the final round of matches.

The questions of who will qualify for next season’s Champions and Europa Leagues is still to be decided while the last relegation spot will probably be taken by Girona, unless there is an improbable combination of results.

At the weekend fourth placed Getafe had to travel to Barcelona, where they suffered a 2-0 reverse.

The home team were booed onto the pitch in response to their 4-0 loss to Liverpool last week, which denied them a Champions League final spot.

Leonel Messi made the pass for Arturo Vidal’s opening goal with an 89th minute own goal from Mauro Arambarri completing the scoring.

The result opened the way for Valencia to move into the final Champions League place, which they duly did with a 3-1 win at home to Alaves. If they win away to Valladolid at the weekend they will claim the coveted spot.

AT the end of qualifying Lewis Hamilton must have been wondering what had happened. His hungry young teammate Valtteri Botas - winner in Azerbaijan - had comprehensively outperformed him to take the Barcelona F1 pole position.

And it wasn’t as if he had just been pipped either. Bottas had put in a superb performance to be more than half a sercond faster than the reigning champion, an absolute chasm in F1.

This was his third Spanish Grand Prix in a row and Mercedes’ fifth one-two in succession. It is difficult to see any team except Mercedes take the constructors’ championship this season.

Ferrari’s hopes of breaking

Mercedes’ dominance were proven to be rather forlorn. An engine and aerodynamics upgrade did not do the hoped-for trick, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen making their day even worse when he held on to third place.

Vettel and Charles Leclerc were fourth and fifth, Verstappen maintaining his record of having finished ahead of at least one Ferrari at every race this season.

Pierre Gasly was sixth in the second Red Bull, with Kevin Magnussen eventually claiming a fine seventh place and his first points since Australia.

Haas teammate Romain Grosjean claimed his first point of the year by finishing 10th af-

ter being passed by the McLaren of Carlos Sainz (eighth) - who maintained his record of scoring at every Spanish Grand Prix of his career and the Toro Rosso of Daniil Kvyat, who finished ninth.

Next up is Monaco in two weeks’ time where overtaking is even harder than it is in Barcelona. Bottas will be hoping to claim his fourth pole in a row, and to keep his lead beyond the first corner!
