Dramatic rescue

FOUND: The group were found by Guardia Civil (inset) in the Rio Chillar area.

by Sally Underwood THE Swedish woman who went missing on a hike with five young girls in the Rio Chillar has spoken about their dramatic rescue. Daniela Cardenas, 34, told one publication: “We were scared, I tried to make the girls calm down.” The nurse, who was hiking with her three daughters and two nieces, aged between 11 and 15 years old, said the group set out at 6pm on Saturday. She explained: “[We went] for a few hours walk but at 9pm it got dark and we were very scared.” She added: “We started to climb down, but we did not go with the right shoes, we wore

flip flops, and couldn’t see where we were going.” Daniela told Spanish media: “We were very scared, although I tried to make the girls calm, not to notice the difficulty, my helplessness and despair.” The group struggled to find phone signal before Cardenas was eventually able to make a call to emergency services. The mother explained: “I could not sleep, thinking that we could be attacked by an animal, I also tried to move to not get

too cold, I got them to do pushups and squats, to stretch their legs.” She said: “We would come back to Nerja in the future, but not to the river, we would only stay by the pool or on the beach.” The group were eventually located by a police search party and helicopter. Mountain rescue workers, firefighters, and Guardia Civil officers took over the rescue operation, eventually finding the group unharmed the

next morning. Several of the children allegedly suffered minor scratches and bruises after they carried out the hike in flip flops. No medical intervention was reportedly required, however. Police have warned the walkers of the importance of wearing proper footwear while hiking. In July 2011, a Dutch tourist went missing for 18 days after getting lost in the same area, hiking between Nerja and Frigiliana.

‘Asleep at the wheel’

A DRIVER has destroyed the terrace of a bar in Torre del Mar after allegedly falling asleep at the wheel. The man, who is aged around 40 years old, reportedly tested negative for alcohol, but refused to perform a drugs test at the Axarquia Hospital. Café Bar Pastor in the centre of Torre del Mar was badly damaged after the car mounted the kerb and smashed into its front. According to Spanish media, the man reportedly told police he suffers from narcolepsy. After suffering from minor injuries, the man was taken to the Axarquia Hospital where officers claim he showed ‘signs of being under the influence of drugs.’ After refusing to submit to drugs testing, the man was charged with offences against road safety. The incident, which took place on Torre del Mar’s Plaza de la Axarquia, caused a stir in the town, with many locals taking to the streets to view the damage.

Hitman POLICE in Malaga have arrested an alleged hitman. Officers from the National Police, Catalan regional police and Polish police worked together to arrest the suspect, who was said to be found with €100,000 in his bag and another £1,000 (€1,160). Investigations began in March when Polish police told Spanish authorities the man may have entered the country, landing in Barcelona before making his way to Malaga. Polish officials claim the man was in Spain to kidnap a member of a rival gang.
