by Simon Wade THE Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales is in urgent need of public help after some of the highest rainfall ever recorded battered the Costas at the weekend.

With more than 120 rescued horses, ponies and donkeys to look after, the sanctuary simply doesn’t have enough stables to keep the animals safe and dry after torrential rains flooded the fields

in which the animals graze.

And the charity urgently needs pumps to clear the excess water.

Euro Weekly News spoke to Sue Weeding, who along with husband Rod, founded the rescue centre 11 years ago.

Sue said: “I don’t know what we’d do without our volunteers, charity shop staff and our supporters.”

She continued, “The rains just got worse and worse over Easter. The one pump we have is struggling. We have a superb

farrier who is very professional, but Enrique can only do so much. “It’s vital that the ground stays as dry as possible.”

Meanwhile mopping up continues across the Costas, where almost 400 hundred people had to be evacuated from their homes as torrential rain lashed the east coast, particularly hitting the British favourite Torrevieja hard.

Wash out at horse rescue centre As well as the heavy rain the area was battered by strong winds with gusts up to 100 km/h and high coastal waters with three-metre waves.

The unseasonal weather led to the cancellation of many of the huge Semana Santa processions that usually attract thousands of visitors every year.

Fortunately no personal injuries have been reported.

Healing power of support

BLOWN AWAY: Local community helps Jane reach second stage of treatment.

by Johanna Rebuffo JANE HIBBURD from Senorio de Roda in the Murcia region lives with stage-four pancreatic cancer and is praying for a medical miracle.

When she was diagnosed, something inside of her and daughter Lucy moved them to find an alternative solution and not give up.

Lucy rushed her mum to the hospital in December, suspecting gallbladder problems. Unfortunately, information was hard to get. Most of it was lost in translation and Jane, 71, was turning yellow and losing weight fast.

After weeks of countless tests and scans, doctors diagnosed her with stage-four pancreatic cancer on January 4, one day before her daughter’s birthday.

It had already metastasised to her lungs, liver and bones.

Pancreatic cancer is extremely aggressive and almost incurable because it is usually detected in advanced stages. Without the possibility of surgery of chemotherapy, Jane was sent home to ‘live out her final days’ of one to three months.

Jane recently bought her dream retirement home in Spain, and Lucy gave up work and became her mum’s 24/7 carer, a task she feels ‘totally unequipped for.’

Lucy is a firm believer in the healing power of holistic medicine. She discovered a doctor in Germany who flies in for Jane’s recommended treatment. With it, her jaundice disappeared, she started eating well, and is walking.

Lucy also believes in the power of the mind, prayer and miracles and has reached out to the local community, who have proved to be amazingly supportive.

An Easter Egg Raffle in a Roda restaurant raised €1,000, allowing for the next phase of treatment, and there is a wellness fundraising day on Saturday in Los Narejos.

AN abandoned house that two homeless people were using as a temporary shelter from the heavy r a i n s a t t h e w e e k en d proved anything but, when the roof collapsed on top of them.

One of the pair was injured, having to be rescued by police and firefighters.

TORREVIEJA’S fiesta season climaxes on Monday, with larger shops and supermarkets remaining open. Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon said, “Torrevieja is a tourist city and cannot go without shops for visitors who come that week, otherwise they’ll go elsewhere and take the investment out of the city.”

Rich with history THIS picture of a fairytale-like castle comes from Castilla y Leon which celebrated its annual regional holiday yesterday (Wednesday).

The Alcazar de Segovia (Sergovia Fortress in English) lies in the province of the same name in Castilla y Leon.

Castilla y Leon became one of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities in 1983. It is made up of the historical Kingdoms of Leon and part of Castilla which both existed before Spain was unified after the Reconquista in the Medieval era.

The region is made up of nine provinces, home to almost 2,337,520 people, according to census data.

It covers an area of 94,223 squarekilometres, making it the largest region in Spain and the third biggest in Europe.

Castila y Leon has no official capital, but most of its administrative agencies are based in Valladolid City.

The region started to form when the Kingdom of Asturias, a Christian stronghold in an otherwise Muslim Spain, began pushing south.

They reached the area which is

now Leon and formed a Kingdom there in 910. The Kingdom of Castilla was created in 1065 and the two merged in 1230 as Christian forces continued to move further into Moorish territory.

The region has witnessed some of Spain’s key historical events including the summoning of the Cortes of Leon, Europe’s first parliamentary body, in 1188 by King Alfonso IX. The Medieval Spanish knight Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (otherwise known as El Cid) was from Vivar in Burgos Province.

Teruel came out the safest city and Ceuta the least contaminated. Malaga was one of the top for being connected by bus.

The survey based their considerations on official unemployment, average salary, housing price per m² data, crime rates, air quality data, and number of bus companies offering long-distance routes.

Hook-up robberies THREE men and a woman in their 30’s from Murcia have appeared in court in relation to two robberies with violence and intimidation in Orihuela Costa.

Their first victim, a 34-yearold man, allegedly met with the woman after meeting her online, before the two men reportedly robbed him. It is also alleged that the gang robbed a 21-year-old local man, using the same ruse.

Murcia, where they were arrested. All three were charged with two crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation. The woman had additional charges because she was found to be driving a vehicle without a licence.

The trio have now appeared before the Court of Instruction No 2 of Orihuela. The men have been provisionally released on bail awaiting trial, while the woman has been detained.

Fraudsters caught

Mud bath use prohibited

TWO of the ‘most active’ fraudsters in Spain were caught in possession of over €30,540 in fake notes in Los Garres, Murcia.

Police were first alerted when a neighbour found 900 fake €20 notes in an abandoned fridge.

During the investigation, it was found the first of the suspects ‘maintained a totally unjustified standard of living,’ considering neither he nor his family worked.

The fake notes were discovered throughout Murcia and the Valencian Community. It is alleged they distributed the notes to smaller businesses to try and avoid detection, as only notes of larger denominations ‘are usually checked.’

When the two defendants were arrested, they reportedly had a stash of false notes with them in their car.

Police also searched their house where another 600 fake €20 bank notes were stashed.

OFFICIALS met with the media last week to outline issues regarding the mud baths at La Mata and Torrevieja.

Fanny Serrano, councillor for the Environment, reiterated the use of the lagoons is ‘absolutely prohibited under any type of circumstance.’ The main reasons are for the environment and for public safety. “The extraction of salt is carried out by means of automatic machinery which moves underwater and could cause fatal damage to illegal bathers.”

NO MUD BATHS: The governing board of the Natural Parks warned of the dangers. was considered, but would be temporary. The area will now be reinforced with private security, provided by the salt company.

Tour companies have been warned they face prosecution if they offer a bathing experience

in Las Lagunas. Serrano added: “We have organised visits to Las Salinas, which (now) meet all the environmental and sustainable criteria. We have the authorisations, and we want to protect and reinforce them.”

Sporting spring in Almoradi SPRING has a varied calendar of sporting events in Almoradi, climaxing with two road races (5k and 10k) on May 4. The races are limited to 800 runners, starting and finishing in the Sadrian Stadium. The same venue saw the 13th Almoradi Football Tournament, last Saturday.

The 18th meeting of Cycling Schools takes place on Saturday in the Poligono Industrial de las

Maromas, with cycling clubs from throughout the Valencian region.

A collaboration with CB Guardamar has already seen 28 teams participate in the fourth Basketball Tournament this week.

The Volleyball Club of Almoradi will celebrate their promotion to Super League in Galicia next week, acknowledging local support.

It’s raining cash LAST weekend’s downpour meant the scheduled visit by Toni Canto to witness Holy Week in Callosa de Segura, was cancelled.

At the same time, the electoral candidate took the opportunity to share his commitment to provide drinking water to the Vega Baja region.

He promised ‘Investing more than €80 million to equip the treatment plants with the necessary technology to recycle water where it is most needed.’

He stressed his commitment to the environment whilst visiting the Sanctuary of Monserrate in Orihuela.

As the rains poured, he urged: “We have to give an example to Spain of how it treats a resource as valuable as water and how it is distributed fairly in the territory.”

Teen thieves THE Guardia Civil arrested four local teenagers, aged 13 and 14, on Sunday for allegedly stealing jewellery and cash.

Three of them were allegedly caught in the act at a house in Callosa de Segura. They are also suspected of taking tools from council property, earlier in March. All four were released awaiting trial.

A Day of Dance SINCE 1982, when UNESCO established the International Day of Dance, it has been celebrated worldwide. This year, Torrevieja celebrates on Saturday with an event which takes place at the Natural Pools of the Juan Promenade Aparicio at 5pm.

There will be a marathon of contemporary dance in the street and many other events.

Hardened criminal MANY Chinese bazaar-type shops pride themselves on selling just about anything. But one has gone too far, with a stock of ‘Viagra’ seized by National Police in Mula.

Now a 37-year-old Chinese man has been arrested accused of a crime against public health, as the medication should only be sold on prescription.

Police also seized an electric stun gun and a knife of ‘great dimensions’ when they raided the store as part of a crackdown on businesses which were employing people illegally.

Silver lining HELP Murcia Mar Menor held a lunch at Restaurant Aquilinas in San Pedro to bring a bit of sunshine into what was a very wet and windy Easter weekend.

Some 30 charity members and friends sat down to menu del dia which was followed by a grand raffle with the top prize a basket of Easter goodies.

To finish off there was the Easter Bonnet parade which has become an annual event bringing together the expatriate and Spanish communities.

LENDING A HAND: Local politicians helped to distribute free orange juice.

Political support THREE local politicians gave a hand distributing free orange juice next to Orihuela Market last week. ‘Citizen Vitamin’ is designed to raise awareness and show a visible and altruistic support to the people of the naranja industry throughout the region.

In total, 8,000 kilos of oranges were used to produce the juice.

Juan Ignacio López Bas,

candidate for the Congress of Deputies, backed the industry saying his commitment “is one of the issues that we have in the electoral programme. A National Hydrological Plan is necessary to bring water to the Vega Baja integrated with other systems.”

The candidate of Citizens to the Valencian Parliament, Maria Quiles, mentioned that her party were the first to

‘have bet heavily on the Vega Baja.’

Changes to the taxation system are also designed to encourage investment and relocation.

The candidate for the Senate, José Quirante, was also involved, before the day ended with a visit to ‘La Redonda de los Huertos,’ a vegetable garden in La Campaneta.

PRESENTATION: The Grupo Pantomima presents cheques to worthy causes.

Panto raises €700 local charities THE Grupo Pantomima made substantial donations to the town hall of Los Montesinos from monies raised following performances of the pantomime ‘Camelot: The Panto.’

The three shows were enacted at the Auditorio de la Escuela de Musica y Cultura in Los Montesinos in January.

Some €400 was donated for food tickets to be distributed to local people by social services and €300 was donated to the Infantil de la Escuela de Musica for new bolster seats in the au-

ditorium.

President Mike Smith presented both cheques along with Jose Manuel Butron Sanchez, Alcalde and various members of the Pantomima cast.

The Grupo Pantomima’s performances are always a success, enjoyed by all ages.

A spokesperson said: “We are always pleased to be able to donate monies to various charities throughout the region. Next year’s pantomime has been chosen as ‘Treasure Island,’ which we are all really looking forward to performing.”

Wildfire fatalities NEW figures have revealed 865 people died in wildfires in southern Europe between 1945 and 2016.

The statistics, released

by Wildfire Today, analysed the number of civilian and firefighter deaths in Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Sardinia.

The report showed Sardinia had the highest proportion of wildfire-related deaths, based on its population of 10.1 million.

Leading causes of death were suffocation, burns, heart attacks, respiratory problems, physical trauma, and exhaustion.

Another leading cause of death was aviation accidents involving firefighting planes.

In Spain, 72 out of the total 96 fatalities were among crews on firefighting aircraft.

Wrestler ‘trashed Spanish hotel room’ A BRITISH Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter was among five arrested in connection with allegedly damaging a hotel room in Tenerife.

Darren Till and four other Britons are accused of breaking furniture and emptying fire extinguishers at the complex in Costa Adeje.

According to media reports, after being re-

moved from the hotel, the group are said to have then stolen a taxi. After travelling to another hotel in El Duque, where they were also refused rooms, a taxi was called.

As the driver loaded the group’s belongings, Till and another person allegedly got in and drove to La Caleta, where they were stopped by police.

CONDEMNED: The attack killed at least 290.

SPANISH government officials have sent their condolences to the victims of a terror attack on Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he strongly condemned the attacks, which killed at least 290 people and injured at least 500 in several bombings at churches and hotels.

“Dozens of victims who were celebrating the Passover of Resurrection give us cause

to mourn. We will never bend to terror and barbarism,” Sanchez said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombings.

Sri Lankan Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene said religious extremists were behind the attacks and others have claimed they were Islamic fundamentalists.

The Spanish Embassy in neighbouring India advised its citizens to take ‘extreme precautions’ following the attack

and advised them to follow the instructions of local authorities. Three churches and three five-star hotels were bombed on Easter Sunday. The hotels and one of the churches, St Anthony’s Shrine, were in the capital Colombo and the other two were in Negombo.

At least eight British nationals were among those who died.

The bombings marked the bloodiest days for Sri Lanka since the end of its civil war in 2009.

Holiday push SPAIN’S regions have launched advertising campaigns in Britain to draw in tourists from the country and combat the expected fallout from Brexit.

Cataluña is the latest region to launch a campaign aimed at British travellers. Its Legends of Cataluña publicity drive, backed by €1 million in regional funding, is set to begin in London and Manchester on Sunday May 26.

It comes as provinces including Malaga and Cadiz set out their stalls at the World Travel Market in London earlier this year. The former is looking to hold as many British tourists as possible on the Costa del Sol. Spain’s national tourist board has also launched a series of events designed to address the concerns of companies in the sector as Brexit approaches.

It comes as the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (CEHAT) predicted Spain could have lost up to three million tourists, had Brexit gone ahead on Friday April 12.

Concerns have eased since Britain and the EU27 agreed to delay Brexit until Thursday October 31. Industry data from the Costa Blanca showed bookings from British travellers increased by 12 per cent this April compared to last year.

Election looms

By Joe Gerrard BREXIT has been delayed until October, but there was little respite for British political parties this week as it looked increasingly likely they will be contesting May’s European Parliament election.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has repeatedly said she wants Brexit to take place before Britain has to hold the vote.

But the legal groundwork has been laid after Parliament was obliged to pass a ‘day of poll order’ mechanism earlier this month in light of ongoing uncertainty over Britain’s withdrawal.

The country’s Electoral Commission, which would oversee the vote if it does take place, said having to manage a ballot which may not happen was ‘unprecedented.’ A Brexit deal would have to be passed before Thursday May 23 if the vote is to be avoided.

The ruling Conservatives have the most to lose from the vote. Early signs are that the support for the Tories could collapse as pro-Brexit sup-

BRITISH house buyers were the largest single group of foreign buyers in 2018 for homes built by the developer Aedas, according to company figures which showed they made up 9.7 per cent of total sales.

Party funds SOME Conservative donors have begun giving money directly to the party’s MPs instead of to its central office (CCHQ) because Brexit has alienated those on both sides of the issue, leading funder Alexander Temerko told British media.

Spain returns sculptures THREE Roman sculptures have been returned to Italy after they were sold on the Spanish black market.

National Police officers seized the artefacts after one was sold in Madrid and

two were sold in Barcelona. Domingo Suarez, an envoy at Spain’s embassy in Rome, said the operation showed authorities were working to protect cultural heritage.

Korean embassy arrest A FORMER US marine has reportedly been arrested in Los Angeles (USA) in connection with a raid on North Korea’s embassy in Madrid.

Christopher Ahn has been named as the man arrested, according to an anonymous source quoted

by AP news agency and the Washington Post.

Ahn is thought to be a member of the North Korean dissident group Cheollima Civil Defense (CCD), which claimed responsibility for the assault. According to the newspaper, Ahn is scheduled to appear before a Los Angeles court on Friday.

mayed’ by the fact the authorities ‘have decided to execute court orders against US citizens deriving from criminal lawsuits filed by the North Korean regime.’

The assault happened on February 22, when a group of about 10 hooded people apparently jumped a wall at the Madrid embassy.

The assailants allegedly handcuffed and beat the employees of the Legation and a group of North Korean architecture students who were there at the time; something which CCD denies.

The assailants took several computers and documents from the building.

Yun Sok So told the police the robbers were from South Korea, that their hands had been tied and their heads covered with plastic bags and beaten.

Alzheimer’s research plan SPAIN’S Council of Ministers has approached the country’s first plan to research and understand the causes of Alzheimer’s.

The plan, approved at a meeting of ministers last week, seeks to curb the rejection, exclusion and stigmatisation of people living with the illness. Around 700,000 people live with the disease in Spain, according to government estimates.

Health Minister Maria Luisa Carcedo said an estimated two million people would have the illness by 2050.

Alzheimer ’s is expected to rise due to people living longer on average, with the onset of the illness typically coming in old age.

The plan aims to improve responses to Alzheimer’s in Spain’s health system by studying what will be required to adequately treat those with the condition. It also seeks to improve the situation for family carers.

DNA links to Spain

ANCESTRY CLAIMS: The people who built Stonehenge could have come from Spain.

THE people who came to inhabit Britain and build Stonehenge reached the country about 6,000 years ago after first travelling through Spain, a study of DNA evidence has claimed.

The study, published in the journal Nature, showed DNA matches between people who settled in Britain in around 4,000 BC and those in the Iberian Peninsula at the same time. “We found overwhelming evidence to support the claim that agriculture was introduced to Britain by incoming continental farmers,” the authors of the study said.

“Genetic affinities with Iberian Neolithic individuals indicate British Neolithic people were mostly descended from Aegean farmers who followed the Mediterranean route of dispersal,” they added. The authors of the study said those who settled in Briton, known as Neolithic peoples, likely began their journey into Europe from what is now Turkey in about 6,000 BC. They settled in what is now Spain and Portugal before crossing to France and entering the British Isles through Wales and the south of England. It found the new arrivals did not mix with existing hunter-gatherer communities, known as Mesolithic people.

The Mesolithic era was the final era of hunter-gathering before humans settled in farming communities during the Neolithic Revolution.

Cannabis biscuits ‘for children’ PARENTS have been warned to be on the lookout for a Dutch brand of biscuit which contains cannabis.

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition sent out the warning after health authorities in the Canary Islands realised the packaging of the products did not say which type of cereal was used in their manufacture.

On analysis they found the biscuits contained an unauthorised ingredient; a derivative of cannabis sativa.

The biscuits involved are Girl Scout Cookies Chocolate Kush, and Girl Scout Cookies Ginger Kush, both from the Greenlove brand.

Health authorities claim the biscuits are aimed at children, although the brand is widely advertised online as containing cannabis.

The extent of distribution of the biscuits across Spain is unknown, leading the agency to put out a warning to regional governments

through the National Food Alert Network and the Community Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed system.

Consumers are asked to turn any of these biscuits they may have bought, over to the health authorities.

THE family of a 27-year-old Costa Rican woman who died in Barcelona are appealing for financial help to bring her body home.

Stephany Gradys, a special educator who had lived in Spain for three years, reportedly died suddenly on Saturday of asphyxiation after eating. While Spanish authorities continue to investigate what caused the girl’s death, her family is trying to raise the €9,000 needed to return her body to Costa Rica. They are also hoping to raise funds to cover the plane tickets of her mother and two sisters who would like to fly to Barcelona to accompany Stephany home.

Spain’s water reserves at lowest levels DESPITE the threat of heavy rain spoiling many Easter week processions in Spain last week, newly-released data shows that the country’s national water reserves are at just 57 per cent of capacity.

The figures show the spring level of 32,388 hm3 of water in the reservoirs have not been so low since 2008.

In comparison, for the same period last year, the reserve was 68 per cent of the total capacity.

Data shows that the northern regions of the peninsula have enjoyed plentiful rainfall through the winter and levels are now between 60 - 90 per cent.

But the worst figures are

from reservoirs in the south of the country with Jucar and Segura at just 37.6 per cent and 30.3 per cent respectively.

The hydrological year, which began on October 1, has seen 14 per cent less rainfall than usual according to data from state national Met Office AEMET.

A MAN was arrested after smashing his car into A & E at Basurto hospital in Bilbao.

He had gone to the hospital’s Urgencias department with an elderly family member who was taken ill in the early hours of the morning.

When told there was a wait, he returned to his car, rammed the hospital doors and drove inside the building, coming to a stop just before the reception desk.

Neither the hospital staff nor the two people inside his white Seat Cordoba were injured although he then allegedly got out of the car and attacked an ambulance driver.

When Bilbao’s Municipal Police arrived to arrest him, he refused to take a breath test.

He now faces charges of dangerous driving and damaging public property.

Royal couple’s pilgrimage THE King and Queen of Belgium, Felipe and Matilde, again walked the Santiago Way over Easter.

They first followed the Camino in 2017 along the Navarra route to Santiago de Compostela accompanied by their four children.

In 2018 they travelled via Alava and Logroño while this year the royal couple took the 28-kilometre French route from Burgos and Palencia.

Discreetly dressed in comfortable clothes and sensible footwear, the royal couple and their bodyguards were practically anonymous amongst other the pilgrims making for Santiago.

Although Belgium is a multi-faith country, the Belgian royal family is Catholic by tradition and Felipe has close links to Spain and its culture.

Processions called off EASTER processions in Sevilla City and others were called off after heavy rain struck parts of Spain on Friday.

Four out of the seven processions scheduled to go ahead in Sevilla City were suspended following rain and hail.

For out of five of the parades planned for Valladolid City in Castilla y Leon were also pulled on Thursday. Only one, the Procession of the Bitterness of Christ, went ahead.

A procession celebrating the Last Supper in Alicante City had to remain in the courtyard of the Maria Auxiliadora after rain struck the Costa Blanca region.

Pollution sources THE plants of 10 Spanish companies produce a quarter of the country’s total emissions, according to a new study.

The Observatory for Sustainability’s study of about 1,200 industrial firms found six of those 10 plants burnt coal. A further three are refineries and one is a steel foundry.

Cement, glass and tile factories, as well as paper and cardboard mills, were also among leading pollutants.

The study found that together the plants reduced emissions by 6.3 per cent last year compared to 2017. But those from steel mills and cement manufacturers rose by 5 per cent and 2.6 percent.

By Joe Gerrard SPANISH politicians and voters are not the only ones hoping that this Sunday’s election will end 10 months of political deadlock.

Sources close to top EU officials have reportedly said they are hoping that a stable government with a clear parliamentary majority will take charge after the ballot.

‘Spanish politics cannot continue to stumble along,’ the sources were quoted in Spanish media as saying.

The comments come in reference to the failure of the ruling left leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) to pass its draft budget for this year. This was the factor which led Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to call the snap election in March.

They also follow years of political uncertainty which began in 2015. An election in December last year saw thenruling conservative Partido Popular’s (PP) absolute majority wiped out, with the party going from 187 seats to

123. The election was also novel because it saw the entry of the centrist Ciudadanos and the leftist Podemos into the Congress of Deputies lower house for the first time. Both took seats from the PP and PSOE, upending what had largely been a two-party system up to that time.

Efforts began to cobble together coalitions on both the

left and the right. But neither side could muster the necessary support to command a majority in the Congress of Deputies, leading to another election the following year.

Little change came from the 2016 vote which saw the PP claw back a handful of seats to reach a total of 137 deputies, still far short of a majority. The PP had called

for stability at the time in the face of what they branded as a rise of radicalism and populism.

The two elections took place against a backdrop of economic instability unleashed by the last recession and corruption scandals which benefitted the insurgent Ciudadanos and Podemos. The 2016 election also took place in the wake of the Brexit referendum, closely watched in Spain and elsewhere in Europe.

Now in 2019, the spectre of uncertainty continues to haunt Spanish politics. A new party, far-right Vox, looks set to enter Congress after exploiting anti-migrant feelings which will complicate efforts to build coalitions and a parliamentary majority further.

The jury is still out on whether stability will return to Spanish politics.

Election day VOTERS in Spain go to the polls this Sunday to cast their ballots for the snap general election.

The election was called at the start of March after the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) effectively had its budget plans vetoed by pro-Catalan independence parties. That left Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez no choice but to go to the polls.

Campaigning is now reaching its pre-election climax, with party leaders having criss-crossed the country to try and win over undecided voters.

That will come to an end at midnight on Friday, after which Spanish law prohibits campaigning until voters go to the polls.

Polling stations open at 9am and close at 8pm. After they close their doors the provisional counting of results will begin.

The general counting of votes begins on Wednesday after ballot papers arrive from abroad. The deadline for the count to finish is Saturday May 4.

There is likely to be some indication of who will win the election after the provisional votes are counted, but the official results will be declared no later than Monday May 13.

The new members of the Congreso are then set to meet on Tuesday May 21.

With the results looking close, it is unclear how long it will take for parties to reach coalition deals.

Three perish in apartment fire A WOMAN, a three-year-old child and a baby died in a fire in an apartment building last Thursday morning. Two more people were rushed to hospital after the blaze.

Emergency services were called to the fire at a six-storey building at 6.40am in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, south-west of Barcelona, to find the fourth-floor ablaze.

Officials say that on the affected floor there were five people, three women and two children.

Firefighters were able to evacuate two of the women, one of them by the facade of the inner courtyard, and two children in a critical condi-

tion. The other woman was already dead.

Later, however, health workers confirmed the death of the two minors; one aged three and the other, a baby, at the San Juan de Dios hospital.

The two rescued women were also rushed to the same hospital with ‘minor’ injuries.

It is reported there has been no structural damage to the building and the upper floors had not been damaged by the fire, as they had their fire doors closed.

The Mossos d’Esquadra police force has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

POLICE in Spain found themselves with a big problem on their hands when called to deal with a case of loitering.

The Guardia Civil officers were snapped trying to persuade the bovine, who

Holidaying boy dies in shooting A 12-YEAR-OLD boy died after an incident involving an air gun in a town just inland from the Costa del Sol. Local sources say the ‘foreign’ family were spending the Easter holidays in Coin in the Guadalhorce Valley when the accident happened.

Paramedics, Guardia Civil and Local Police responded to the emergency call, but they could not save the boy’s life.

An investigation into the incident has been opened by the authorities.

ETA appeal denied AN appeal by former ETA terrorist Kepa Pikabea Ugalde has been thrown out by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

He was asking that the 10 years he spent in a French prison be deducted from the 30-year term imposed on him in Spain for three counts of murder.

The ECHR decided the time served in France should not be taken into account as the sentence was imposed for belonging to a terrorist group.

This was a different offence for which he was jailed in Spain; specifically the three murders.

The Strasbourg court recognised that in Spain the maximum term possible is 30 years and decided that this should not be reduced on the basis of time served for a separate offence in another EU country.

Pikabea, 63, was arrested in France in 1994 and is now serving his Spanish sentence at Martutene Prison in San Sebastian. On March 29, he

Pikabea Ugalde joined ETA in 1980. In that year alone, he participated in five terrorist

various deadly attacks. Then in 1991 he took part in more attacks which ended with the murder of several Guardia Civil, policemen and a private individual.

Unity trolling SPANISH Twitter users have offered parody suggestions to a former government minister after he asked which national symbol united Spain following the Notre Dame cathedral fire in Paris.

Jordi Sevilla, the Minister for Public Administration under Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero, asked social media users: ‘Do we in Spain have a national symbol which unites us all like the Notre Dame for the French and Europeans?’

Martin Pettersson replied ironically: ‘Currently a hatred of Catalans which provides electoral capital.’

Antonio Baños said IBEX 35, in reference to the index of Spain’s most valuable publicly listed companies.

Safety review in wake of Notre Dame blaze A SPECIAL meeting will be held in Madrid to discuss plans to review safety arrangements and ‘protect cultural goods in case of an emergency,’ after the devastating fire at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

Government Culture Minister Jose Guirao said: “Obviously (the Notre-Dame fire) was an alarm bell and we will

review all the installations.

“The danger is with old electric installations which have to be surveyed, but that in general, the installations in our big monuments are safe.”

Spain has 47 UNESCO World Heritage sites of which 41 are cultural, four are natural and two are mixed.

The first sites listed in Spain were the Mosque of Cordoba,

the Alhambra and the Generalife, Granada, Burgos Cathedral, Monastery and site of the Escorial, Madrid and the Park Güell, Palau Güell and Casa Milà in Barcelona.

In a radio interview Guirao also said he would hold talks with his French counterpart Frank Riester to offer help in the rebuilding of the Notre Dame.

QROPS: The pros and cons of transferring your UK pension Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) are widely seen as beneficial for expatriate retirees, but are by no means a one-size-fits-all solution.

Here we explore some advantages and disadvantages.

Tax efficiency Currently, Spain residents can transfer UK pensions into an EU/EEA-based QROPS without taxation. However, transfers outside the bloc attract the 25% UK ‘overseas transfer charge’ of 25%.

This may be extended post-Brexit, so time may be limited for tax-free transfers.

Funds in a QROPS are sheltered from future UK taxes on income and gains and lifetime pension allowance penalties.

QROPS funds only become taxable once you start taking benefits in your country of residence.

When accessing QROPS or taking UK pension lump sums and income, the general Spanish income

some protection from UK inheritance tax for non-UK resident heirs.

Multi-currency options UK pensions usually pay out in sterling, but some QROPS allow you to invest funds and make withdrawals in more than one currency. This is a major advantage for British expatriates in Spain as it reduces dependence on pound/euro exchange rates and removes currency conversion costs.

Freedom from UK rules… to a point Funds in a QROPS are no longer governed by UK pension legislation, so are protected from future changes to UK rules.

However, you could still be subject to UK legislation – and taxation – if you transfer funds again to an unapproved scheme or permanently return to the UK. Where HMRC deems its rules have been broken, it can charge a 55% tax penalty on the transfer amount – potentially even if you had moved funds before the rules changed.

Puigdemont election snag

By Joe Gerrard CATALUÑA’S former president, a fugitive from Spanish justice and now European Parliament candidate would have to return to Spain to enjoy legal immunity if elected, its justice minister said.

Dolores Delgado said Carles Puigdemont’s presence at Madrid’s Central Election Board would be required if he wins a seat in the European Parliament after May’s vote. The former president remains in Belgium and is subject to a Spanish arrest warrant after leaving the country following the 2017 Catalan independence push.

“The European Parliament should be responsible for pointing out the conditions to guarantee legal immunity,” Delgado said. A report from the European Parliament also stated Puigde-

BAN PLAN: PSOE has said it will abolish prostitution if it wins the election.

Prostitution ban backing SPAIN’S ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) has said it will ban prostitution if it wins Sunday’s snap general election.

Party sources told Spanish media they would update their manifesto to including proposals for a ban.

‘Prostitution, which we aim to abolish, is one of the cruellest aspects of the feminisation of poverty and one of the worst forms of violence against women,’ the updated document is set to say.

It comes as the party has framed its election offering as a progressive, moderate alternative to the social conservatism offered by parties on the right.

It also follows previous pledges from PSOE to outlaw prostitution. Plans drawn up in December would have treated sex workers as victims and led to brothels being shut down if they had passed.

Pro-prostitution groups including the OTRAS sex workers’ union opposed the plans, claiming they restricted women’s choice and would make it harder to protect those in the industry.

Spain’s sex work industry is estimated to be worth around €3.7 billion. Experts estimate around 13,000 women work in the industry and that 80 per cent work against their own will or are exploited.

SETTING SAIL: The Open Arms was moored in Barcelona for 100 days.

Permission to sail

By Joe Gerrard SPANISH maritime authorities have granted the Open Arms rescue boat permission to leave harbour and take supplies to refugees in the Eastern Mediterranean after 100 days spent in Barcelona.

Officials have given the boat permission to sail to the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos to deliver humanitarian aid to refugees in camps there.

It comes after authorities prevented it from leaving, accusing the Proactiva Open Arms NGO which runs the boat of failing to comply with international agreements and docking rules.

Proactiva Open Arms founder Oscar Camps said volunteers had been denied the chance to do something to help migrants and refugees stranded in the Mediterranean while it remained docked.

Camps previously called on Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez to stop blocking the boat and to live up to his rhetoric about migration being a common challenge for Europe.

The boat was due to leave the port on Friday.

The Open Arms has been active in rescuing migrants stranded in the Mediterranean for about four years and is estimated to have saved hundreds of lives.

New Geopark A MOUNTAIN range in Galicia has been chosen as one of 11 natural areas globally which will be designated as a World Geopark by the UN. UNESCO chose the Serro de Courel, in Lugo Province, among others including from Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Norway and China to have the status.

UNESCO said the Courel range was home to ‘remarkable’ evidence of ancient gold mining by the Romans which reflected the relationship between humans and nature.

There is currently a total of 147 UNESCO World Geoparks across the globe.

TARGET: Easter worshippers were at risk, it is claimed.

SPAIN’S postal service has handled more than 1.3 million requests for postal votes for this Sunday’s general election and for the Valencian Regional vote.

Andalucia was the region with the highest numbers of postal votes requested at almost 214,330, followed by the Madrid Region with almost 194,130 and Valencia, 175,466.

Driving licences in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

If you are planning on living in Spain on a permanent basis, it’s a good idea to have a Spanish driving licence - in fact it is mandatory after a while. Here are some guidelines for current and new drivers on how to do this quickly and easily.

If you already have a valid EU (European Union) Community or an EEA (European Economic Area) driving licence and meet the minimum driving age in Spain, you can use it for the first two years of residence in Spain, although you must register your details with the traffic authorities after six months.

You can register at your Central Register of Drivers and Minor Offenders of the Provincial Traffic Headquarters.

If you don’t obtain a Spanish driver’s licence after two years of residence in Spain and are caught driving, you can face a fine of around €200. Visit: www.dgt.es to find out more.

Once the process is under way, you will have to adhere to the same conditions as Spanish licence holders: Have reached minimum age in Spain for the specific category of vehicle you want to drive, Relevant medical checks, Renew or exchange the licence after the first two years’ residence in Spain.

If an EU licence is renewed in Spain it effectively converts it into a Spanish EU licence, which then needs to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and every five years after 65.

The new regulation which requires new residents to exchange their licences for a Spanish one, was enforced three years ago. As such, Spain has agreements with more than 20 countries, allowing drivers to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for its equivalent. To find out more, check with your home country’s consulate in Spain or the Spanish Traffic Authority at www.sede.dgt.gob.es.

To exchange your licence, you will need to fill out an application form that is issued by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. (See the above website). The following documents will be required: Proof of identity (original passport and a copy), Proof of your residence for six months (Certificate of Registration in the Central Aliens Register - the NIE number), Application form (in Spanish), Current valid driving licence to be exchanged (original and a copy), Written declaration stating that you don’t have another driving licence of the same class in another country, Written declaration stating that you have not been suspended or banned, Two recent passport size photographs (32 by 25 mm), Medical fitness report (visit the DGT website for information).

For new drivers, check the legal driving ages and permit types before you register. You can get details depending on what type of vehicle you want to drive by visiting: English-driving-school.com.

The best option (for new drivers) is to go to a driving school as they take care of the registration process with the Jefatura (Jefatura Provincial de Trafico) on your behalf. Once you have registered, get your medical and vision test done, too.

THE General Directorate of Public Health has proposed a new scheme to ban smoking from several beaches in the Balearic Islands.

All coastal town halls belonging to the island have been requested to voluntarily introduce smoke-free beaches in a bid to reduce the consumption of cigarettes and promote healthy habits.

Narrow escape AN Easter tradition in a Spanish village nearly ended in disaster when a tree trunk crashed to the ground, narrowly missing spectators.

In the festival - the origins of which are unknown - a 40metre tall tree trunk is taken to the main square in Cornella del Terri, Cataluña, before being allowed to crash to the ground and shatter into pieces

on the hard cobbles. Crowds gather to witness the event, but this time high winds nearly caused a tragedy as the trunk started to topple towards the specatators rather than fall into the empty square.

People scattered amongst screams to avoid the trunk, which at the last second was pushed away from the spectators by two men who had been

holding it upright.

The trunk smashed onto the cobbles narrowly missing residents including a young boy who had run across the square to avoid the tree’s original path.

The town’s mayor has pledged to keep crowds further back in future years, saying such a dangerous situation should never have arisen.

FALLING: The amount budgeted for cathedrals has dropped.

Cathedral funding cut FUNDING to restore and repair cathedrals in Spain has fallen by more than 90 per cent in the last 10 years, according to the country’s heritage agency.

The deputy director of the Institute of Spanish Heritage of Culture (IPCE) said funding had fallen from €18.3 million to €1.6 million.

“Cathedrals require constant attention. We have to go back to €18 million in funding for stable maintenance,” Rivera said.

The deputy director added funding was ‘very little,’ and that funding had fallen drastically in recent

years. “National plans have no budget. It is a mistake which should be corrected urgently,” Rivera said.

The IPCE repairs about 40 cathedrals a year on average. The agency has maintained the holy buildings since 1990 when it struck an agreement with the Catholic Church to oversee renovations and repairs.

Javier Rivera’s figures follow a fire which tore through Paris’ Notre Dame cathedral, destroying its roof and spire and causing millions of euros worth of damage.

FREEDOM: Spain saw its ranking increase this year.

By Joe Gerrard SPAIN has ranked 29th on a table of the countries with the most press freedom, up two places compared to last year.

Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) World Press Freedom Ranking scored 180 countries for the table.

RSF said there had been a ‘clear improvement’ to the situation in Cataluña although it remains a hostile environment for radio and television reporters.

RSF said there were around 40 verbal and physical attacks on journalists in the region over the last 18 months.

The organisation said reforms to Spain’s RTVE public broadcaster in 2017 to shield it from government interference was good news.

But RSF added that hatred for journalists existed in Spain as it did in other Western democracies.

Spain came behind Cyprus and ahead of Lithuania in the table. Norway, Finland and Sweden came first, second and third respectively while Germany came 13th and Britain came 33rd.

RSF awarded countries zero to 100 points based on the representation of differing opinions, media independence, the environment for journalists, the legal framework, transparency, support infrastructure and abuses.

Anteco Systems, which trades under the name AnyTech365, is among the companies which have made it onto the Financial Times most recent ‘Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies’ table.

The table, which ranks companies based on annual turnover from 2014 to 2017, showed the Marbella and Torremolinos-based firm had an absolute revenue growth of more than 2.5 per cent. Its 2017 earnings stood at €5 million.

Bubble fears rule plan OFFICIALS with Spain’s Ecology Ministry have drawn up plans to tighten regulations on the renewable energy market amidst fears excessive demand could fuel a speculative bubble.

Figures from Red Electrica de España (REE), which is in charge of managing and granting renewable energy access permits, shows current applications amount to more than 144,400 megawatts of power.

Ministry forecasts under its Energy and Climate plan predicted the amount would be 67,500 megawatts.

REE figures show power generated under the permit system totalled 28,400 megawatts, with permission granted for a further 45,900 and requests for 70,500.

Fears about speculation are new to the energy market. Previous permit rules coal and nuclear power plants and other installations contained no measures preventing speculation because it was thought no

company would sell such assets on at a profit. But the arrival of renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines has reduced investment costs, lowering market barriers to entry and opening it to speculation.

Officials fear if that happens, permits could become sought after solely for investment reasons, distorting the market and creating the conditions for a later crash.

Spain’s National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) watchdog would have to approve any regulation changes put forward to make sure they do not harm competition.

SPAIN’S Tax Agency has warned about politicians increasingly using corporate entities to reduce payment burdens as four government ministers were previously found to be doing so.

The agency said the use of sociedades patrimoniales (patrimonial societies in English) allowed some to play the tax system by billing and buying through them.

It comes after Pedro Duque, Isabel Celaa, Nadia Calviño and Maxim Huerta were found to be using sociedades patrimoniales. Huerta resigned as Culture Minister less than a week after taking office over his tax arrangements.

Bank merger costs higher RESTRUCTURING costs incurred by the merger between Spain’s Unicaja and Liberbank are estimated at €317 million, three times more than previously thought according to industry analysis.

Credit Suisse’s report on the merger showed the cost of the merger itself would be €101 million, 10 per cent of the combined cost of both banks.

Credit Suisse has also cut its estimates of expected

profits of the unified banks by between 15 and 17 per cent due to Spain’s overall economic outlook going forward.

The merged Unicaja and Liberbank entity is estimated make €175 million in profit in 2019. The new entity is expected to net more than €1 billion.

The new bank is set to become the sixth largest in Spain with assets of €92 billion.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TOO, was shocked and saddened by the terrible devastation of Notre Dame in Paris last week. At the time of writing, no group has claimed responsibility and no blame yet been apportioned.

‘Appears to be accidental’ is a phrase being bandied about. This reaction being the usual, ‘petrified to offend anyone’ attitude which complacent European Christians seem to adopt for almost any atrocity which isn’t actually followed by a ‘we are responsible,’ sign, emblazoned in sky writing above their heads!

However, before I am once again accused of some kind of phobia or another, let me run a few facts by you. In 2016, three females, with radical ties to Islam, were arrested in a street adjacent to Notre Dame; along with a lorry containing six gas cylinders and Arabic propaganda papers. In the violence which ensued, two police officers were injured with one being stabbed in the chest.

After the incident police declared they were ‘in a race against time’ before a major terrorist attack took place.

Also in that year, a Catholic priest was murdered by ‘two soldiers’ of a group calling themselves Islamic State (ISLE). Last year, in France there were 873 reported attacks on Christian churches and 1,063 anti-Christian acts. Bearing all these facts in mind, quite frankly, if this Notre Dame disaster is put down to coincidence, then I

COINCIDENCE?: Over the last few years there have been attacks on Christian artefacts and holy shrines. truly do give up.

Just to drive my point home, as I write, reports are coming in from Sri Lanka of seven explosions, targeting six churches and hotels, which have killed nearly 300 people and injured hun-

dreds more. And all of these recent atrocities are occurring during one of the most sacred Christian periods of the year.

Here are a few more facts for the disbelieving snowflakes and ‘infidels.’ Over the last few

years, all across Europe, there have been thousands of attacks on Christian artefacts and holy shrines. This year, in March alone, four churches in Germany were vandalised or torched.

And still the silence from the authorities is deafening! Don’t take my word for this cowardly inaction. Cast an eye over a report last week on PI - News, a German news site.

I quote: ‘Hardly anyone writes about the increasing attacks on Christian symbols. There is an eloquent silence in both France and Germany about the scandal of the desecrations and the origin of the perpetrators. Not a word or even the slightest hint which could in any way lead to the suspicion of immigrants. It is not the perpetrators who are in danger of being ostracised, but those who dare to associate the desecration of Christian symbols with immigrant imports. They are instead, accused of hatred, hate speech and racism.’

Unquote.

Well, be that as it may, I am utterly convinced that unless the authorities get some bottle and at least publically recognise the problems of increasing ‘Christianophobia,’ some form of rightwing ‘tit for tat’ will begin to occur.

And then we will surely need heaven to help us all.

BECAUSE there were so many Sevillanas-loving Andaluces in Felipe Gonzalez’s first governments in the 80’s, the dance became very fashionable outside the region.

Gonzalez himself wasn’t averse to an afternoon of Toros and is on record as saying he believed the Fiesta Nacional would never disappear.

Sevillanas are no longer the excuse for many a hard-drinking night out from Alicante to Albuquerque though the dance remains an accomplishment required of wellbred young ladies.

Toros began losing their grip years ago, so perhaps Gonzalez was wrong, though Pablo Casado is doing his bit to prove him right.

Casado is so supportive of bullfighting, he has included a couple amongst Sunday’s Partido Popular candidates.

Taking his cue from Gonzalez, ambitious Cesar Sanchez is promising a yearly bullfight put on

by Alicante Diputacion ‘to promote bullfighters and novilleros.’

Currently Calpe mayor and Diputacion president, Sanchez hopes to repeat at the Diputacion and since he heads the PP’s Alicante list, he’s Madrid-bound as an MP too. Pollsters agree Sunday’s results are impossible to call, but if Casado can pull off his dream of a PP-Cs-Vox ménage-a-trois, Spain is condemned to return to afternoons of toros, puro y copa.

Getting the message PEDRO SANCHEZ vetoed a televised head-to-head debate with Partido Popular presidential contender, Pablo Casado.

He preferred to debate with Casado plus Albert Rivera, Santiago Abascal and Pablo Iglesias, respective leaders of Ciudadanos, Vox and Unidos Podemos.

Sanchez wanted Casado, Rivera and Abascal lined up together replicating their photo during the Madrid demonstration last February to illustrate his claim that there aren’t three Right-Wing parties, just one acting as a block.

Instead, the national Electoral Committee ruled out Abascal because Vox does not have parliamentary representation.

Pity, that. We all know that an image is worth a thousand words - and votes.

And a short, sharp gallop back to the past.

Against the buffers of reality THERE were always two Spains composed of haves and have-nots, the devout and the anti-clerical, conservatives and socialists.

But there’s a third Spain which is under the radar, the Spain which longs for the past, the Spain where immigration was never a problem as immigrants were usually well-heeled northern Europeans, the Spain where Cataluña meant the Sagrada Familia and Crema catalana, not Carles Puigdemont.

The Spain which voted Right or Left as there was no-one else to vote for, but felt overlooked or misunder-

stood or mistreated by Right and Left. This third Spain lurking beneath the radar is now targeted by Vox, a party promoting the premise nostalgia ain’t what it used to be, and peddling dreams which will disintegrate on running into the hard buffers of reality.

by April 28. But as Spaniards-in-the-street wearily observed, haven’t their leaders and would-be leaders already been campaigning for months?

IT’S no secret that institutions develop their own language in the interests of time and confidentiality. Restaurant staff use various terms to describe their customers, sometimes derogatory, occasionally complimentary. So, when next in your favourite restaurant, consider how you’re maybe being described.

While lots of regular customers are referred to by what they regularly order or their idiosyncrasies (for example, ‘extra garlic,’ ‘doggie-bag lady,’ ‘lousy tipper’), ‘PIA’ is code for ‘Pain In the A*** ,’ ‘HAF’ means ‘Had A Few,’ and ‘FF’ in the reservation book against your name means you’re ‘F***ing Fussy.’ Oops!

Doctors too have their codes. While a ‘GLM’ is a ‘Good-Looking Mum,’ with ‘GLL’ (Great-Looking Legs) and an ‘FLK’ a ‘Funny-Looking Kid,’ a ‘TBP’ is a ‘Total Bloody Pain,’ a ‘GPO’ is ‘Good for Parts Only,’ and ‘TEETH’ is ‘Tried Everything Else, Try Homeopathy.’

WITH regard to the charges levied on our group of ‘illegal’ homes to be ‘legalised,’ and your response of March 14, would the ‘bill payer’ change if the original developer was still trading and being encouraged by the town hall to deal directly with the Junta?

Also, is there a brief reason the 15-year debt limit does not apply?

Unfortunately, David Searl no. The buyer of You and the Law a property buys it with all in Spain rights that go with it and also with charges outstanding. You could have obtained a Certificado Urbanistico from your town hall at the time of purchase which would have revealed this. The 15-year limit to recover debt does not apply here because your house is now part of a Sistema de Cooperación, in which the town hall pays a part of the costs and the homeowner the remainder.

Because your inclusion in this ‘co-operation system’ is recent, the time limit does not apply.

If it is any consolation, thousands of homeowners along the Spanish coasts are suffering similar charges. Even more annoying is the knowledge that the original developer has got away with not paying.

Think before you judge static Tremor. It’s one of the rarest neurological disorders in the world and there is no treatment. It means I spend a lot of time using a wheelchair. I can walk - I just can’t stop for longer than a few seconds. So I can walk my dog, but I get a tremor every time he stops to do what dogs do.

I have a particularly ignorant neighbour who, on top of his racist remarks and other insulting comments, cannot grasp this at all.

In fact, he can’t even understand that disabled people use wheelchairs not pushchairs!

I kid you not. He’s apparently going to report me to the hospital because he’s seen me walking.

This is the sort of rubbish that disabled people, who are not confined permanently to a wheelchair, have to put up with. Of course there are some people who do mess with the system, but there is a way round that.

Make people show a doctor’s letter or blue badge to airport assistance. Obviously there has to be discretion if someone has had an accident etc. The people who cheat the system are the people who park in disabled bays and then abuse you when you explain that you need the extra space to get in and out of your car with your wheelchair.

On the plus side most people are very understanding, sympathetic and helpful, and I thank you for that.

IGNORANCE is a very dangerous mental disorder. It makes some people say and do very strange and sometimes dangerous things.

This week, UK media ‘personality’ Katie Hopkins put on Twitter that she was at an airline gate watching ‘hundreds’ of miracles. Of course, that statement alone is nonsense. She was referring to people formerly bound to wheelchairs, suddenly gaining the ability to walk. She then went on to say ‘praise be, the miracle of why walk when there’s a wheelchair to skip the lines.’ This is a pure and utterly dangerous thing to say because this tweet caused many of her followers to agree with her. On the plus side there were many - like myself - who tried to explain to her and others that there are many disabilities which mean you have to use a wheelchair for certain parts of your journey and for other parts you can walk.

It’s no miracle, just the nature of the illness. So once again I am going to explain my particular disorder. It’s called Primary Orthomikesenker@gmail.com.

AFTER 17 years living in this country I have to agree with your article (Thank you to the Spanish health system - Issue 1760). Always an excellent service.

Only three weeks ago I rang at 8.45am for a non-urgent check up with our doctor. The receptionist’s reply was ‘9.15?’ Then it was agreed that 10.30am would be perfect.

Always the same doctor, sometimes a few minutes late, but sometimes out before the actual appointed time. Torrevieija hospital is more than first class.

Euthanasia I WAS so saddened to read the article about a man who helped his wife with multiple sclerosis to die who could go on trial at a gender violence court (Issue 1763). It is such a sensitive and important subject, and everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

But while debates about euthanasia are being carried out, this case proves we must never forget that there are real people, with real lives who are suffering and have been for a long time.

A Spanish nurse turned up to do routine obs. She didn’t even acknowledge the patient let alone the visitors. Without speaking she checked her temperature, then left.

Last night at 10.15pm, my friend rang her bell and when a nurse came she asked her to help her to make her more HEALTH SYSTEM: An environment of comfortable. She said she would come collective togetherness. back. She did - at 7.30am.

So don’t think for one minute that the Spanish way is superior to that of the UK. Lots of Spanish nurses are severely lacking in social skills. In my experience of nursing in the UK and Spain, the vast majority of my colleagues have been caring people irrespective of nationality.

‘Staff of different colours, creeds, nationalities with a variety of languages, all performing their duties in an aura of separateness.’Actually they operate in an environment of collective togetherness and bring a wealth of expertise to their work. We don’t have mass immigration. But without the immigration we have, the NHS would simply not be able to function.

I don’t know why you have seen inside a lot of London’s hospitals this winter. If it is to have received treatment for yourself, then I sincerely hope in future, you stay away from our overworked NHS and have the treatment in Son Espases.

VIOLENCE and abuse against women is not only morally abhorrent, it is also costing the Spanish economy billions.

A new government report has claimed the cost of gender violence is equivalent to €185 for every person in Spain in the worst case.

The estimated overall economic cost ranges between €1.3 billion and €8.5 billion. The latter figure is equivalent to more than one 10th of what Spain budgeted for welfare in 2017.

Those costs do not take into account those incurred by the trauma inflicted on children and relatives who witness gender violence first-hand. The government estimates those are equivalent to billions in economic losses.

Society clearly has incentives to eradicate the scourge of gender violence. If communities and the government could do more to spare women from mistreatment then they would be happier and free of violence-induced trauma.

They would then be able to offer their talents in the workplace alongside the rest of us instead of suffering, often in silence, while their prospects dwindle.

The wealth they create could be spent on helping to eradicate gender violence and offer more support to victims.

Not only this, but it could be used to help reduce poverty, addiction and other factors that create the conditions for gender violence to thrive.

But ultimately, we should never lose sight of the fact that the highest price for gender violence is paid by its victims.

Skin detox

by Sally Underwood WITH the weather heating up and the prospect of the summer holidays not too far off, many of you may be thinking of getting out your summer wardrobes.

While the prospect of being reunited with bikinis, shorts, and maxi dresses may be a happy one for some of us, many people worry about exposing skin which may have become neglected over the colder months.

Breathe life into skin which has been covered up all winter with a quick and easy skincare detox for the face and body to boost circulation and improve skin tone.

Begin by body brushing; a centuries-old method of exfoliating and improving skin tone; even helping to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Use a brush such as The Mio Body Brush (now €13, www.lookfantastic.es). Beginning at the feet and working your way upwards, make long, upward sweeping motions, always working towards your heart. For the tops of your chest and shoulders, brush lightly downwards.

Allergy awareness MOST of us welcome the arrival of spring, but the warmer weather often heralds the start of symptoms such as sneezing, headaches and itchy, red or watery eyes for hayfever sufferers.

Last year, the purchase and sale of ‘rustic properties’ in Spain increased by 3.9 per cent compared to 2017. What’s more, 13.6 per cent of all property sales in Spain corresponded to rural real estate, with 138,906 sales of this type of property.

According to a study by FEMP (Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces) this is a real problem, with more than 4,000 Spanish municipalities having fewer than

In terms of investment, rustic properties can be a good opportunity, but it pays to shop around between regions.

According to website Vitrio, the cheapest areas

are Extremadura (4,149 €/ha), Aragon (5,194 €/ha), Castilla y León (5,781 €/ha) and Castilla La Mancha (6,521 €/ha).

At the other end of the scale are the Canary Islands (86,072 €/ha), Andalucia (19,957 €/ha) and the Balearic Islands (19,613 €/ha).

Other factors such as the property size and its main use, ease of access, proximity to developed cities, tourist centres and points of interest such as health centres, and the availability of services, all have an influence.

Despite the ‘casa rural’ being just 10 years old they found a builder who was sympathetic to the village’s character and used some original bricks and tiles to create a traditional cottage feel in keeping with its surroundings.

These two properties now offer self-

catering breaks and holidays in rural Spain. Casa Dora is a one-bedroom house that is over 150 years old and Casa Camille has two double bedrooms and can sleep up to six people.

They can be rented separately or adjoining and with prices from just €15 per person per night, there really is no reason why you can’t escape the hustle and bustle of life. Pets are welcome and prices include linen.

Spaniards are their main visitors, but Margaret wants more expats to discover the delights. Having lived in Spain for 14 years, she believes there is nowhere else quite like it.

CHINESE BEAST: BYD’s concept took inspiration from dragons.

CHINESE automaker BYD has debuted its all-electric ESeed GT concept car at the Shanghai Motor Show - and dare it be said about a car from that nation, it looks pretty sexy.

While the Chinese motor industry has been making giant strides, it has not up until now been famed for the aesthetic beauty of its products.

BYD decided to change that by bringing together the expertise of three international design experts, Wolfgang Egger, BYD Global Design Director, Juan Ma Lopez, BYD Global Exterior Design Director and Michele Jauch-Paganetti, BYD Global Interior Design Director.

They have taken inspiration from the company’s home country’s traditions to use what they call ‘Dragon Face’ design language.

In this they attempted to apply the ele-

ments of a Chinese dragon into a super car design, such as headlights resembling ‘dragon whiskers,’ a ‘dragon ridge’ on its roof, tail and seats and ‘dragon-scale’ features on its door panels.

It also boasts a three-screen interconnection, a retractable steering wheel plus a ‘BYD heart’ and other technologies.

BYD adheres to its ‘technology based, innovation oriented’ concept. With its solid R&D strength and innovative development model, it has achieved comprehensive development, playing a decisive role in many fields such as automobiles, rail transit, electronics and the renewable energy-related business (solar and energy storage).

Nissan engineers have managed to upgrade the car’s performance even though some people may have thought the refinement and performance of the GT-R’s 565-horsepower 3.8-litre V6 24-valve twin-turbocharged engine - each handcrafted by its own Takumi technician - was so high, there was no room for improvement.

New turbochargers providing tighter clearances and a 5 per cent increase in efficiency have been fitted. Overall, they provide sharper engine response in and out of corners, making the driving experience more rewarding and richer than ever before, according to Nissan.

The GT-R features a revised six-speed dual-clutch transmission with a refined R mode, made for both road and track. It features more aggressive downshifts to better anticipate swift cornering exits, with gear selection happening during ABS engagement, resulting in reduced under steer and a more driver-intuitive feeling.

The adaptive shift control is

programmed to change shift schedules to fit the user’s driving style, making it possible to drive according to the law on public roads, with full brute force available on the race track, without needing to manually change shift modes.

The electronically controlled suspension has been tuned to provide better cornering stability and a smoother ride. The steering is more precise than ever, requiring minimal corrections at speeds of up to 300kph (186mph). A new brake booster increases the initial braking response by engaging with less pedal stroke, resulting in enhanced stopping power and feel.

The special edition car will come in three heritage-era, two-tone exterior colour combinations meant to represent the GT-R’s liveries from the Japan GP series; of which the original GT-R was born to compete in.

Retired since the GT-R ‘R34’ model, Bayside (Wangan) Blue makes a return, complete with white racing stripes.

A four-coat, double-heat treatment process ensures a vivid blue with striking highlights and deep shadows. Blue accents on the wheel spokes are among several fine touches made to celebrate the GT-R's milestone.

Pearl White with red stripes and Super Silver with white stripes round out the 50th Anniversary liveries.

by Nick Fletcher THE Mercedes-Benz B Class is a spacious compact family MPV aimed at those seeking better accommodation for passengers and their luggage, and its stand-out sales point is the premium image it carries over from the company’s larger, more prestigious models.

The latest version has sleek subtle styling cues which give the B Class an elegant exterior appearance, and inside, the beautiful cabin design is classy and impressive and immediately makes you feel you are driving a car which might cost twice the price.

In fact, the entry versions start at €31,188 (£26,980) and are very well-equipped with climate control, LED headlights, cruise control, sat-nav, reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels, digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a central infotainment screen.

There are petrol and diesel engine options with differing power outputs, and my model is the entry-level B180 Sport priced at €31,188 (£26,980) with a punchy four-cylinder 136hp 1.3litre petrol unit and standard seven-speed auto gearbox.

The 0-100kph time is 9.0 seconds and top speed is 212kph (132mph). Emissions

are 125g/km and average fuel consumption is 16.8kpl (47.1mpg). While the model is labelled Sport, don’t expect the performance on this entry version to be very sporty.

However it is perfectly adequate for normal needs and the suspension set-up reflects the targeted family use by putting the emphasis on all-round comfort. With light precise steering and a nice overall balance, the B Class drives well with excellent cornering composure and its higher driving position provides good allround visibility. Overall the B Class comes across as an ideal family car, offering space, comfort and practicality.

Rivals include the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Volkswagen Golf SV and while both are strong contenders, in my view neither can match the level of kudos which comes with the famous Mercedes Benz three-pointed star.

BARCELONA are on the verge of claiming the La Liga title, with their next game against Levante quite likely to be the match they wrap it up.

They beat Real Sociedad 2-1 in the 33rd round of games this weekend without never really getting out of second gear.
