Preparing for the worst EMERGENCY services practised preparations for a disaster scenario at Almeria airport last week, staging a s imu latio n o f th e co o rdina te d re sponse to an air accident.

Ambulance crews, medical teams, firefighters, police, Guardia Civil, Civil Protection, the Red Cross and the Emergency Psychology Intervention Group were all involved in the run through of actions in the event of this kind of emergency situation.

The simulation was organised by

the Andalucia regional administration, the A EN A public c ompa ny which manages Spain’s airports, Almeria City Council and the subdelegation of the government, and coordinated by the 112 Andalucia Emergencies service. It envisaged a plane coming down on the outskirts of the airport with 16 passengers and four crew on board.

cooperation between the different emergency services and administrations in the event of a real air disaster. The delegate said simulations of this kind were essential for ensuring a ‘rapid and effective’ response.

Sanchez praised the professionalism of all those taking part in the exercise and the ‘humanity and dedication which guided their actions,’ pointing out the simulation had put particular emphasis on assisting accident victims and their families.

Prostitution crackdown ALMERIA Council is cracking down on prostitution in the city.

The city authority has set in motion a Local Police operation, initially zeroed in on the Oliveros neighbourhood. Officers are backed up by social assistance, council psychologists and the APRAMP association, which helps victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

City Safety and Mobility councillor Manuel Guzman said there would be a police presence ‘morning, noon and night’ and fines of up to €3,000 for prostitutes’ clients.

City governing team spokesperson Maria Vazquez said the city put police operations of this kind in motion several times of year, but complaints from Oliveros residents had prompted the decision to take action at this time.

Trafficker caught A FUGITIVE from Belgian justice for drug trafficking charges is in the hands of the authorities after police stopped him as he got off a ferry at Almeria port.

Checks on the documentation of passengers disembarking from the boat from Nador in Morocco revealed a court in Charleroi had issued an international arrest warrant for the man. He is wanted in connection with a cocaine and heroin trafficking ring uncovered last October in Fontaine L’Eveque and Marchienne au Pont.

HOLY WEEK: Processions are taking place across Spain.

Semana Santa (Holy Week in English) takes place during the last week of Lent and coincides with Easter.

Spain is famous the world over for its commemorations to mark the Bible story of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection.

Each town and city is home to several religious brotherhoods who don

special costumes to take part in processions held throughout the week.

Different brotherhoods wear different coloured robes - or nazarenos - to show which group they are members of.

Processions took place on Palm Sunday and take place today on Holy Thursday, tomorrow on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The parades held are specific to the part of The Passion story remembered on that day.

Processions throughout Spain all feature Pasos; elaborately-decorated floats depicting New Testament fig-

ures such as Jesus Christ, the apostles and the Virgin Mary.

The parades take different forms and have distinct tones depending on the region. Processions in Andalucia have a celebratory atmosphere, particularly in the provinces of Granada, Malaga and Sevilla.

Those in Castilla y Leon, particularly in the provinces of Camora and Valladolid, have a more sombre tone.

The processions are accompanied by marching bands who play religious pieces, while marchers parade through the streets.

Living abroad THE number of Almerians living overseas has risen to some 48,000, according to the latest figures from the Andalucia Institute of Statistics. Of this number, 11,681 people were born in the province and the rest are the children or descendants of native Almerians.

Cruise appeal ALMERIA could attract more cruise tourism, according to the city’s port authority president.

Speaking at the Seatrade Cruise Global cruise industry trade fair, Jesus Caicedo said public and private sectors should work together to make Almeria a more attractive destination for cruise ships and tour operators.

Altercation alert A GUARDIA CIVIL call out to an altercation in a Roquetas de Mar block of flats led to the discovery of two indoor marihuana plantations.

When the patrol arrived they noticed a strong smell of the drug inside the building. Once the argument situation had been resolved officers went in search of the source, honing in on one apartment. The intense orange-coloured lights inside and the fact it was connected to four air-conditioning

units raised suspicions it was being used to cultivate marihuana.

Keeping a discreet eye on the flat, officers spotted someone trying to pass a large bag from the balcony over to another property in an adjacent building. A search of both apartments confirmed this was a case of illegal indoor plantations, leading to the seizure of 296 marihuana plants in one and 89 in the other.

The operation resulted in two arrests.

Controlling husband given sentence AN Almeria court has sentenced a man to a one-year suspended sentence for a decade of controlling behaviour over his wife.

The court said RGC had prohibited his spouse from getting a job, controlled her telephone calls and social media, isolated her from her friends and family, and prevented her from going out alone. The ruling referred to his ‘aggressive attitude and intimidation’ of his wife.

The judge stressed that on ‘repeated occasions’ he had displayed this behaviour towards his wife in front of the couple’s young children. The court concluded his actions had caused the victim’s symptoms of depression and had affected her self-esteem.

In addition to the suspended sentence, the court banned him from owning or carrying arms for three and half years.

Motivating budding business minds INSPIRATIONAL talks from professionals in different walks of life were among the highlights of the Enterprise and Business event staged in Huercal-Overa last week.

This was the fourth edition of the initiative to be staged in the municipality, and it attracted hundreds of young people, entrepreneurs and job seekers.

Economist Jose Maria Gay de Liebana, fashion designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, and actor Jesus Vidal gave motivational presentations. They spoke about their own personnel and professional experiences, encouraging the young audience to work hard to get their ideas off the ground.

business and young people, who in turn ‘develop enterprises, employment and economic activity in our municipality.’

The mayor encouraged all the participants to ‘start out fearlessly and to stick to your goals. As the slogan for these days says: believe in your idea, create your future.’

Almeria Council president Javier A Garcia attended the event. He maintained public administrations should create opportunities for businesses to generate employment, remarking: “This is how wealth is produced, with the talent of business people, entrepreneurs and the self-employed.”

Riverbed clean up THE River Almanzora got the first of what will be a monthly clean-up on Saturday.

The initiative, a collaboration between the Graeca Association e c o l o g i c a l g ro u p a n d Cuevas del Almanzora To w n H a l l , i s a b o u t raising public awareness on the importance of keeping the river rubbish free, as well as clearing 15 kilometres of riverbed stretching from the rowing canal to the river mouth.

Meeting with members of the association last week, Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez said the council was happy to collaborate with Graeca on an action ‘which will benefit our ecosystem.’

Recycling mindset NIJAR has launched an awareness-raising campaign for local schoolchildren aimed at encouraging them to recycle.

The ‘Nijar Conciencia’ initiative, a joint effort between the local authority’s Urban Services Department and Ecoembes, will also see information stands set up at school e n t r a n c e s a n d s t re e t markets.

Urban Services councillor David Lozano said the local authority wanted to get the message on the i m p o r t a n c e o f re c y cling and making correct use of the different containers across to all residents to crea t e a c l e a n e r, m o re sustainable municipality.

The schools campaign will feature various activities and workshops adapted to different age groups.

POTENTIAL: Visiting the historical site, the Culture Minister said it could become an important tourist and cultural attraction.

Minister pledges his support CULTURE Minister Jose Guirao has promised support for the Espiritu Santo archaeological project in Vera.

Speaking during a visit to the site of the medieval town of Bayra at the weekend, Guirao, referred to its ‘enormous potential’

as ‘an economic motor for Vera as a tourist and heritage attraction.’

Welcomed by Vera mayor Felix Lopez, local councillors and members of the provincial and regional administrations, the minister, who is originally from Pulpi, said he was ‘thrilled and proud’ to

be making his first official visit to the municipality as a government minister.

The project was launched as part of a raft of activities to commemorate last year’s 500th anniversary of the earthquake which destroyed the old town.

RAISING awareness on gender-based violence should start in schools, Mojacar mayor Rosmari Cano stressed.

The mayor was speaking at the first public awarenessraising session on the issue organised by the local council and the Mojacar Local Police Gender Violence Unit as part of their work with the Interior Ministry to combat the problem.

The mayor highlighted Mojacar’s efforts on the issue since 2011, when she signed collaboration agreements incorporating the municipality into the ministry’s Integral System. This made Mojacar a pioneering municipality with the creation of its own Gender Violence Unit, and in 2016 saw the local police unit become the first force in Andalucia to receive the Spanish government’s Menina award for stand out actions against gender-based violence and in favour of equality.

The session, held at Mojacar’s Multiple Uses Centre, focused on nurturing an active awareness on the role of women. Granada University psychology graduate Alejando Montero Madej led the talks, dividing them into two different discussion areas. The first looked at the values passed onto the young and the role today’s culture plays in their behaviour.

The second focused on the different aspects of genderviolence and improvement strategies for relationships, jealousy, and communication, among others. He underlined the importance of reporting cases of abuse, commenting, “without a formal complaint, you cannot access the available range of security and protection.”

A second session on gender-, violence is scheduled for Friday April 26.

Residential complex request NIJAR Council has unanimously approved asking the Andalucia regional government to cede land in the old mining village of Rodalquilar for a high-end residential complex for the elderly.

Mayor Esperanza Perez Felices pointed out the village in the middle of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park has been pretty much abandoned for years, maintaining an initiative of this kind would have social and economic benefits for the area, creating year-round employment.

The mayor said the resort would offer ‘a different concept of a residence.’

Easter week in words and pictures THE Easter Week celebrations in Huercal-Overa are beautifully documented in words and pictures in a new local council book. Speaking at the official presentation of a Visual History of Huercal-Overa’s Holy Week, Mayor Domingo Fernandez said the tome relates ‘our experiences, our memories, our traditions, the pride of our town from 1890 up to the present.’

For further insights into Easter in the municipality there is an exhibition of photographs taken over the years of the processions and the brotherhoods at the Teatro Villa until the end of the month.

Playground makeovers CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA has finished three more makeovers of municipal children’s play areas. The latest to get a new look are those located in the El Vivero, San Diego and Plaza Rosa Mª Saez Prol parks.

The local council is spending more than €215,000 on its playground improvement programme. Works include replacing equipment and installing safety paving and new fencing.

Swimming is life ADRA municipal pool has joined the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation’s Swimming is Life programme, aimed at guaranteeing quality instruction for children from the earliest age.

The programme promotes activities based on playing games in the water to help tiny tots learn the basics of swimming such as breathing and basic floating movements, while having fun at the same time. The

idea is to give children confidence in the water before gradually learning the different swimming styles.

To further motivate children to persevere with their swimming classes, the programme features a collection of prizes related to a marine animal featured in the Disney film Looking for Dory.

The awards range from Baby and Parents to First Safety and Personal Survival.

THE final Dreambeach lineup features 30 acts, including Steve Angello from Swedish House Mafia and Australian duo Knife Party. The music festival in Villaricos will be held from August 7 to 11.

Musical start to Easter PIANO students from the Mojacar municipal music school gave a concert in the village church to mark the start of the local council’s programme of Holy Week activities.

Ten young pianists, aged from eight to 15, performed a medley of well-known pieces ranging from Brahms’ Cradle Song to soundtracks from famous films, including Titanic and Forest Gump.

The concert was conducted by the students’ piano teacher, Yolanda Parra Niederhauser, who also performed Corazon de Niño by Raul di Blasio.

years taught preliminary music classes to the youngest pupils between three and seven, as well as being the municipal music school piano teacher.

There are currently 35 students attending the school’s piano classes. A number are preparing for intermediate exams, which they will take at the Cuevas del Almanzora Conservatory.

Although all music and piano classes at the municipal school officially begin at the start of the school year, anyone can join at any time, whatever their age or level.

Common concern TEENAGERS from schools in Italy, Germany, Finland and Greece joined pupils at the El Palmeral Institute in Vera when they visited the municipality as part of a European project on sustainable water use.

The youngsters are taking part in the Erasmus+: Water, a combining element project. The initiative aims to raise awareness among schoolchildren about the rational use of water through exploring a variety of related areas, from climate change and water resource management and distribution to tourism and history.

The teenagers’ week in Vera began with an exhibition of the students’ drawings, photographs, videos and computer graphics for an environmental campaign and the inauguration of the greenhouse constructed by El Palmeral pupils.

The youngsters were taken to see a number of the area’s places of interest with a link to sustainable water use, among them the Carboneras desalination plant, greenhouses using advanced technology in Antas and the source of the River Aguas.

CLIMATE CHARGE: Greenpeace unveiled the bill in Madrid.

A giant bill

By Joe Gerrard GREENPEACE has hung a giant bill on a Madrid skyscraper to raise awareness of what they claimed was the price of political and corporate inaction on climate change.

The environmental NGO hung the 300-metre high banner on the side of one of the Colon towers in the Spanish capital on Thursday. Inaction from politicians and corporations has racked up an environmental and social bill which will ultimately have to be paid by the people, Greenpeace said. “They are

costing us our lives, they are costing us the planet.

And we are not going to pay the bill,” Greenpeace said. “The bad practices of large companies and current policies not only destroys the environment, but also creates an increasingly unequal society with fewer rights,” the NGO added.

Greenpeace’s protest comes as demonstrations against climate change have stepped up in recent months. Spanish school pupils have repeatedly joined hundreds of thousands of others from around the world in striking from lessons every Friday in protest against pollution.

MONEY SPINNER: Game of Thrones production spent €15m in Spain.

SHOOTING of TV series Game of Thrones brought €15 million of direct investment to Spain. But it is expected the economy will benefit by many million more in the coming years as fans of the series visit the country to view the locations used.

The eighth and final blockbuster series was filmed in locations around the world, with Spain once more being fea-

tured heavily including the Sevillian town of Osuna where filming continued for 15 days.

Some 650 extras were taken on, with a total of 1,000 people working on the film in that time. This boosted the town’s economy for those days, and now a tourism boom is expected for the usually sleepy municipality.

Spain is becoming increas-

ingly attractive for filming thanks to the improved tax and economic advantages offered to production companies.

Mainland Spain offers a tax incentive to international filming in the form of a tax rebate of between 15 per cent and 25 per cent (up to €5 million) depending on the autonomous community.

The Canaries offer tax breaks of up to 40 per cent.

A HOLIDAY rental web platform founded in 2002 and with 18,000 holiday homes listed around Spain has new ownership.

The website www.spain-holiday.com received over 23 million visits in 2018 and had a turnover of €2.2 million and is currently available in 13 languages. It has a very strong presence for holidaymakers from the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Rescue ship ‘blocked’

By Joe Gerrard LAWYERS with a Spanish aid NGO are currently exploring their options, as a boat with humanitarian aid bound for a Greek island remains held up in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Humanitarian Maritime Rescue’s legal team is looking at taking action over claims Spain’s Maritime Authority blocked the Aita Mari from reaching Lesbos.

It is laden with supplies for thousands of refugees including medicine, baby

nappies and food.

The NGO said on Instagram there was no justification for the ‘cruel’ decision from Spanish authorities.

“Solidarity is not a crime.

Passivity towards those who suffer is,” the NGO said.

Spanish officials said the boat did not have a proper permit and had not correctly gained authorisation from Portugal for its voyage. The boat’s home port is in the Basque Country. It set out for the Eastern Mediterranean from Spain’s northern Atlantic Coast and was allowed

to pass through Portuguese waters before reaching the Strait of Gibraltar.

The group’s social media page said on Sunday the crew received a radio message from Spain’s Maritime Authority ordering it to stop. Officials told the crew they did not have permission to continue.

The NGO added the latest move from maritime authorities came after they had prevented the boat from taking part in rescue missions in the Central Mediterranean for about three months.

Going organic is the answer SPAIN had 43,984 registered organic farmers and growers in 2018, a 5.3 per cent increase on the previous year.

‘This puts Spain’s organic sector in a prominent position,’ confirmed the annual report from organic growers’s assocation, Ecovalia.

€92 billion, of which €37.3 billion corresponds to Spain in seventh place.

Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible.

If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org.

A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname.

The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person).

Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe.

After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate.

After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months.

The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross.

Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery.

Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million.

Tourism holds BRITAIN and Spain remain popular destinations for travellers from either country despite Brexit, industry data has shown.

Spending from British travellers has grown by 5.4 per cent so far this year compared to 2018, according to figures from the Exceltur industry association.

Data from the Hosteltur hotel body showed the number of bookings made for Easter week has risen by 12 per cent compared to last April.

The Costa Blanca’s HOSBEC industry association’s figures showed the number of reservations made by British holidaymakers in Benidorm grew by 7 per cent year-on-year in the second half of March.

“The British are returning positive figures despite uncertainty over Brexit,” the association said.

British travellers are still the biggest single nonSpanish group of holidaymakers in Benidorm, the same data showed. They accounted for 42.7 per cent of all overnight stays in the second half of March, HOSBEC said.

The figures follow a push from the Costa Blanca tourism industry and authorities to draw British travellers during this spring.

HOSBEC said in February the industry believed bookings from British travellers would pick back up once the factors causing Brexit uncertainty were resolved.

Further delay

By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister narrowly avoided a no-deal Brexit last week after securing an 11th-hour extension to the withdrawal date, giving her and Westminster until October 31 to pass a deal.

Theresa May secured the sixmonth extension after meeting with leaders from the EU27 in Brussels.

Together they struck a compromise between May’s request for a short extension and Brussels officials including EU Council President Donald Tusk’s call for a year-long delay.

The agreement, dubbed a ‘flextension,’ allows lawmakers in London time to come to a consensus on the terms of Britain’s withdrawal. Britain will be able to leave the EU if a deal is passed before the deadline.

But an EU summit will be held in June to monitor Britain’s behaviour after leaders including French president Emmanuel Macron expressed concerns it could undermine EU business going forward.

Campaigns kick off

By Joe Gerrard THE official window for general election campaigning has now opened, following a lively pre-campaign phase which saw parties set out their stalls to voters.

The official period for campaigning began on Friday.

Posters have now gone up in towns and cities across the country and party leaders are currently on the trail to galvanise their support bases and win over undecided voters.

The talking points have broadly fallen along a left-right divide with some cross over and exchange between the two.

All parties have released detailed manifestos featuring policies on education, the economy, healthcare, defence, foreign policy and social issues and others. But a small number of points have made it to the fore. Key talking points for the left have centred around social

VOTE PITCH: Campaigning is now in full swing. and economic policies. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said his ruling left-leaning PSOE was the only ‘moderate’ party which voters could elect on Sunday April 28.

Sanchez laid out a programme which included raising the minimum wage, helping young people to buy homes, working to end gender violence, tackling rural depopulation and fighting against climate change.

The leftist Podemos has emphasised the similar issues.

Speaking in Palma in Mallor-

ca, leader Pablo Iglesias focused on working conditions, proposing the curbing of temporary contracts and raising the minimum wage to €1,200.

PSOE and Podemos both reportedly have a pact to avoid criticising each other on the campaign trail, likely in preparation for post-election coalition wrangling.

Meanwhile on the right, parties have focused on issues including the ongoing independence issue in Cataluña and on further opening the Spanish economy to private business

and financial control.

All parties on the right have made cuts to taxes and deregulation a part of the latter issue.

The conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox have each tried to convince right-wing voters they are best able to deliver their vision for Spain.

The PP has made that appeal a central part of its broader electoral strategy. Campaign videos have told voters considering backing Vox that their ballots would be wasted because of the way votes are allocated for the Congress of Deputies, favouring more established groups.

Ciudadanos has slightly departed from free market orthodoxy. Leader Albert Rivera has proposed easing pressure on businesses while curbing temporary work contracts and offering more state aid for families.

Profile: Regional parties WITH a general election looming on Sunday April 28, we are profiling each of the political parties vying for victory in the vote.

When voters cross their ballots, not only in the general election but also for local, regional and European polls in May, there will be region-specific parties standing.

Regional parties vary in ideology, policy platforms and purpose. Cataluña and the Basque Country are both home to nationalist and pro-independence groups, but there are others who stand to campaign on issues which are particular to a given region.

Coalicio Compromis stand exclusively in the Valencia Region. They espouse left-wing, environmental and Valencian regional positions including promoting its language and is currently part of the governing coalition in the Corts Valencianes assembly.

Mallorca is home to the Mes per Mallorca and the Proposta per les Illes party. The former is on the left while the latter lies in the political centre and both have a handful of seats in the Balearic Islands Assembly.

In Andalucia, the far-left Candidatura Unitaria de Tabajoadores (CUT) has one seat in the region’s parliament.

Banks drafted for rail bonds SPAIN’S ADIF railway infrastructure body has called in four leading banks to sell bonds worth at least €500 million to fund the building of new high-speed lines.

Spanish banks BBVA and Santander will sell the bonds alongside London-based HSBC and France’s Societe General.

The sale is set to be done as ‘green bonds’ which were first offered in 2017 and again last year.

ADIF president Isabel Pardo said green bonds were part of plans to improve sustainability and become more environmentally-friendly.

State aid for small firms

IMF Spain deficit forecast SPAIN’S public spending deficit will be 2.3 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) this year and remain below 3 per cent afterwards, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted.

The IMF forecasted a fall in the difference between the Treasury’s income and outgoings of 0.4 percentage points from 2018 to this year.

Spain’s deficit was 2.7 per cent of GDP last year.

The deficit will remain slightly below 2.5 per cent of GDP until 2022 when it will rise and reach 2.8 per cent of GDP by 2024, the IMF

The IMF said then that ‘credible’ measures would be needed to bring the deficit down.

The international lending body said the forecasts were based in part on predictions that economic growth will slow in Spain and elsewhere in the coming years.

Spain’s national debt will fall

Industry Minister Reyes Maroto, who announced the measures last week ahead of their approval, said the package would be split into three parts.

Almost €96 million will be available for young entrepreneurs, €50 million will go to boosting overseas trade for companies and €307 million will help with energy efficiency.

Maroto said: “These measures seek to eliminate obstacles to small business growth and international expansion.”

Number of companies rises A TOTAL of 9,386 companies were created in Spain in February, up 7.4 per cent on the same month in 2018 the latest National Institute for Statistics (INE) figures show.

Almost €848 million in capital was invested into the founding of the companies during February, an increase of 86.7 per cent year-on-year. A total of 2,311 companies folded in February this year, ac-

cording to INE data.

About 19.4 per cent of new firms were in the trade sector while 15.6 per cent were in the construction industry.

A total of 82.5 per cent of companies which folded did so voluntarily, with 6.9 per cent ceasing to exist due to mergers and 10.6 per cent closing for other reasons.

Turnover increases SPAIN’S chemical industry increased its turnover by 4 per cent to more than €65.6 billion in 2018, the largest amount of growth ever recorded for the sector the Business Federation of the Spanish Chemical Industry (FEIQUE) said.

Double up FRENCH supermarket chain Carrefour has almost doubled its Spanish stores from 582 in 2004 to 1,008 currently, making Spain second only to France in terms of the number of shops, according to a new company report.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONCE again, it appears strangely coincidental that a subject I chose in a previous column seems to manifest on a wider scale the following week.

In the last blurb, I wrote about the pathetic retributions being passed on by our so-called Judges.

Well this past week, one of those judgements truly did take the whole tin.

It concerned the case of the Turkish born toerag who has apparently been fighting deportation for some five years. This man is a violent criminal, who has never applied for citizenship, and over the years, has been convicted of robbery, criminal damage, burglary, assault and shoplifting.

In 2016 a judge decided because he had become the member of a notorious North London gang, he had (wait for it) ‘integrated well, into a part of UK society.’ The judge decided this made him a ‘home-grown criminal’ and allowed him to stay. (I defy anyone to make that one up!). In a series of immigration appeals his blood- sucking lawyers have cost the British taxpayers untold thousands of pounds. And he’s still here - awaiting yet another public purse draining appeal.

Sometime I truly do lose the will to live. What with the Brexit fiasco and judgements like this, is it any wonder our once proud British nation has become the laughing stock of the world? If we’d had this lot of ‘do gooders’ and pathetic politi-

Another so-called ‘judgement’ also caught the ol’ boy’s eye this week. A serial drink-driver was ‘given a chance’ by Judge Sarah Buckingham,

even after the accused had crashed into three other vehicles and needed rescuing from her own blazing car. This was her third offence and she admitted to dangerous driving while three times over the limit. It wasn’t even the judge’s almost

unbelievable decision to give her another chance it was actually her reason for doing so. She was deferring sentence for three months, she said, to see if the defendant could address her issues ‘because she was a woman.’

‘Had Miss Parry been a man,’ the judge added; ‘it would have been straight down the stairs.’

Hold on a minute, is that not a more blatant case of sexism than you would ever be likely to hear?

Can you imagine the scream up if she had told a man that if he were a woman, he would have been immediately incarcerated? Loose Women would have had a field day. The roads to Westminster would have been jammed with Boadicea lookalikes and men would be going without their dinner or sexual favours for weeks.

As it is I have yet to see one protest from the poor beleaguered males of the populace. Come on fellas you can’t all have become transgenders.

Oh, I dunno, the way things are going, it may not be a bad idea!

Don’t listen to sat nav Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man

still giving directions so ‘it’ wasn’t lost but I sure was. It had been raining and the track was seriously muddy and the car was getting pulled into tractor tracks.

Yeah, I know you are thinking ‘idiot, w h y d id you go on the tra c k in firs t place?’ Well I honestly thought Google maps wouldn’t take me into such a place.

When my car sat nav runs out of road it just tells you to find a proper road.

But Google maps now tells me to turn right, then sharp right again which makes me think I’m going back on myself.

Not to make it even scarier, this mud track is even narrower and there is a river on one side with no wall or barrier.

The car was sliding all over the place and Mrs S now insists on getting out of the car and walking.

Her theory was that if the car goes into the river there is no point in us both dying - she can get help. So thoughtful.

Then at last we see a motorway again and the amazing thing is this mud track does bring you right up to the side of the shopping centre! So here’s the moral of the tale. DO NOT LISTEN TO YOUR SAT NAV IF IT STARTS TO TAKE YOU OFF ROAD! It’s just being a clever dick trying to prove ‘you may be lost but I’m not!’

THE horror journey home from Sevilla: We decided to stop at a shopping centre.

My car ’s sat nav couldn’t find it so I then used Google maps on my ‘phone.

All was fine and we even saw a motorway sign that we were going in the right direction.

Then the nightmare started. I took a wrong turning and the ‘phone recalculated the route taking us down a road that was running parallel to the motorway.

We then came to a no entry sign and I had to turn left which was a narrower road but I’m thinking Google maps must know what it was doing.

Oh boy was I wrong! The road all of a sudden became a very narrow mud track so I couldn’t turn round. I thought it was only going to run for a few yards and then the App was telling me to take the next left which I thought would take me back on to a ‘proper road’ but it didn’t.

All I could see was fields! How could my Google maps take me here? It was mikesenker@gmail.com.

Pause for Easter AS a chocoholic, I always relish the availability of chocolate eggs at this time of year; I really can’t get too many! Unfortunately however, this year we’ll be visiting family in Tanzania, where chocolate eggs rapidly melt to a gooey mess. So we’ll have to use boiled eggs instead.

Puzzled? Well, before retiring to Spain, we used to live on the outskirts of Preston in Lancashire, where every Easter, children decorate boiled eggs ready for the egg-rolling competition. This centuries-long tradition attracts many thousands of visitors to Avenham Park in Preston on Easter Monday, when various groups compete to see who can roll their eggs the furthest.

A fascinating custom, which is of course loosely based on the amazing Easter story of the stone which rolled back from his grave when Jesus rose from the dead.

The birth, life and death of Jesus are comparatively easy for us to accept in this sceptical age, but his resurrection, so pivotal to Christian faith, is much more of a challenge.

Yet each of the four Gospel writers agree that

it happened. Jesus died; his body placed in a tomb, sealed with a very large rock, which was then guarded by soldiers to ensure noone could steal his remains.

Yet hours later, the rock had been moved aside, the tomb was empty and the guards were claiming that in dereliction of their duty, they’d fallen asleep, during which time the followers of Jesus had removed his remains without waking any one of them!

To be honest I find the Biblical explanation that the stone was moved by an angel and Jesus came back to life rather less difficult to believe. And his followers were so certain of his resurrection they refused to modify their story, even under torture and threat of death.

So I’m pretty comfortable with that Gospel account, accepting that by definition God must be beyond the power of death.

And taking that one, small, entirely logical step of faith, necessarily results in allowing us to trust him with those who’ve died, confident that all who had faith in him will in due time be raised themselves, so we may be together with the Lord forever.

THERE is a lot of confusion over registering on the Padron. To do so one must be habitually resident in the town, so that excludes holiday home owners. I know for many years some town halls have turned a blind eye or even encouraged such registration. The municipality get financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and government authorities for the provision of services.

Until a few years ago the Padron registration was valid until cancelled by the named person. However, now EU Nationals must renew their registration every five years, non EU nationals every two years.

Deplorable shelter I WAS so disgusted to read about the dog kennels in Malaga which was said to have kept 80 dogs in just 16 small enclosures.

Well done to the Guardia Civil for raiding this ‘shelter’ and cracking down on negligent animal ownership.

It is important for everyone to keep an eye out for potential animal abuse and not be afraid to report anything if genuinely concerned over an animal’s well-being.

Fact checking REGARDING a letter concerning the theft of an EU Citizen’s Registration certificate (green paper) in your previous edition.

The writer complained that having reported the theft in Barcelona, upon applying for a replacement they had problems because the report (denuncia) did not show that the certificate had been stolen. Whilst inconvenient to the writer it should be apparent that a crime report showing just a synopsis of what was stolen cannot be used as proof that a specific item was stolen. In this case the EU Citizen Registration Cert.

The set fee, currently, to replace a certificate is €12, whether that is because of loss, theft, change of address etc.

Mood change A TRULY brilliant piece Leapy Lee and so on the mark. I am a retired Brit living in Germany, who left Spain after 15 years, and who has become so disenchanted with our UK government and scare-mongering UK press. People misguidedly talk of the need for a second referendum which shows how little they understand the democratic process. The vote was the vote and the result was the result. What is, in my view, important is to leave the EU with a deal that protects the rights of the individuals and trade which in turn will protect jobs for those still needing to work and health care for those relying on the Department of Works and Pension (DWP).

FREAK CRASH: The crash took place in Malaga City.

‘Horror’ at smash I WAS horrified to see the photos in last week’s Euro Weekly News of the bus which smashed into nine cars in Malaga after its driver had a heart attack.

It is so lucky that no one was injured, although I still feel sorry for pedestrians and owners of the cars which were hit as the incident must have come as quite a shock.

You reported that the driver had previously undergone a medical test. This incident is a stark reminder that despite medical checks and restrictions for some suffering from particular conditions, these are never any guarantees about safety behind the wheel.

OUR VIEW Ensuring opportunity A NEW study which showed fewer millennials are making it into Spain’s middle class compared to previous generations makes for worrying reading.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found half of those born between 1983 and 2002 have or will make it into the middle class by age 20. The equivalent figure for ‘baby boomers,’ those born between 1942 and 1964, was 60 per cent.

All governments champion economic prosperity and their commitment to it is shown by the enthusiasm of officials to cite Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures among others.

But ensuring a country is rich is half the battle. The key to true prosperity is making sure that wealth reaches as many people as possible.

Good, well-funded education for the young and quality jobs for them once they leave school is a crucial part of this.

Not only does it benefit them, but it ensures public coffers are furnished with adequate tax revenue to spend for the benefit of us all.

This virtuous cycle, known as the ‘multiplier effect’ in economics, can break and become a vicious one if wealth is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands.

An EU study found a lack of opportunities during the last recession saw 133,000 highly-skilled workers leave Spain from 2007 to 2017.

If such workers leave they take their talents with them and deprive the public purse and society with the means of making economic improvements. Once established, that vicious cycle is hard to break.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange arrested by police in London I sincerely urge the UK Home Secretary to extradite Julian Assange to Sweden but not to the USA. Here’s why. Two Swedish women accused him of rape and other sexual offences following a Wikileaks conference in Stockholm in 2010. The accusations lapsed by time limit while he was hiding from justice in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

One of the women is seeking to reopen her case against him. She should have priority over the USA’s entirely politically motivated extradition request.

Why do I say it is politically motivated? Because the US authorities are hopping mad that Wikileaks revealed some of the terrible atrocities committed by US military personnel in Iraq. I have seen the appalling helicopter cockpit video showing US airmen slaughtering innocent civilians who were only trying to get medical treatment for a badly injured civilian. I have read the truth about the attempted US cover up of this and other war crimes committed by the US military in Iraq and Afghanistan. If Wikileaks had not existed, we would know nothing.

We need the likes of Wikileaks to hold renegade governments to account. Donald Trump is now saying he knows nothing about Wikileaks. He says it’s not his thing. Well, he would, wouldn’t he? The BBC website has footage of nu-

merous Trump rallies where he praised Wikileaks time and time again when he was running for president. It suited him then. It doesn’t suit him now, surprise, surprise. Justice should prevail. Genuine Swedish justice that is, not the Trumped up charges (pardon the pun) coming out of the corrupt Trump White House.

AT our community AGM they advised us that the garage needs to be refurbished inside and that quotes would be obtained. I objected, but it was passed by a majority vote.

My argument is that I do not have a parking place or one of the storage rooms, but they say it is a community area.

The parking and storage rooms have in the past been sold off by some of the residents to outsiders.

My property did not come with a garage so why should I have to pay for its upkeep?

What’s worse, is my share of the cost is eight times more than someone who only has a parking place. Have I got any rights not to contribute?

Then we attended the l a u n c h o f t h e B e s t Yo u Legacy Club Marbella, for whom we are again media partners. The club aims to help people leave a legacy, whether it be in the business world, charitable causes or even something more personal.

What both these events have in common is that they bring together people from all parts of the expat community who want to make a real difference -just like the EWN always has.

ONE beneficiary of Euro Weekly News during its history was Leo Bermejo, who died from a rare form of cancer despite a fundraising effort and campaign on his behalf.

Many readers will remember Leo by his nickname Leo the Lion. The boy, from Vera Playa in Almeria Province, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer in September 2015.

Leo’s family contacted Euro Weekly News in January 2017 when he was aged four shortly after he had several tumours removed.

Leo’s mother Karen Keefe said they aimed to raise €176,000 so Leo could travel to the US for pioneering treatment which they hoped would rid him of the illness.

Euro Weekly News journalists soon got to work on raising awareness for the four-year-old’s plight. More than €75,000 was raised for Leo in eight days, in part thanks to our publicity and efforts on the ground from Almeria Sales Manager Jackie Butcher.

Attention from the public soon followed. Former Real Madrid defender Leo Bermejo, who shared a love of football with the four-year-old as well as a name, retweeted a Euro Weekly News Twitter post calling for help.

By May 2017 Leo had flown to the US and completed his proton therapy treatment. He was welcomed back in Almeria on Sunday May 7. But an MRI scan in September of that year showed the tumours were once again growing.

An urgent appeal for more support, including for a dedicated private nurse, was made with the help of Euro Weekly News in November.

But it was not enough and weeks later, on Friday December 1, Leo passed away days before his fifth birthday. His last words were: “I love you.”

Karen told Euro Weekly News after Leo’s passing that she was grateful for the support she had received. She added this newspaper’s publicity had helped to show the true face of cancer in children.

Steph and Fran run Costa Blanca Magic Mirror, company which rents out the device of the same name for parties, weddings and other events. It allows people to see themselves in a mirror-like screen which takes their picture and applies overlays including emojis and frames.

Fran told the Euro Weekly News her and business partner Steph were among the first in Spain to get a magic mirror.

“It’s great to bring fun and joy to people and to see them enjoying themselves whenever we go to an event with the Magic Mirror,” Fran said.

The company offers the service from €375 for two hours and are GPR Protected under European Privacy rules.

Costa Blanca Magic Mirror is able to offer bespoke packages to customers depending on the event and their needs, Fran said.

IN 2010, Fuengirola’s Sohail Castle was the site of an epic fundraiser organised HISTORIC in collaboration with the Euro WeekFIRST: The Spring ly News.

Garden Party The Spring Garden Party, which raised more than saw more than 500 people show € 20,000 for Age their support for Age Concern, raised Concern. more than €20,000.

Hosted by former Spectrum FM presenter, Paul Breen-Turner, the fundraiser was the first ever event of its kind to be held for Age Concern and went down in the history of the association as a great success. The money raised went to fund training for 100 caseworkers to help the elderly and vulnerable in Spain. Before the party was over, EWN’s Michel and Steven Euesden, were called to the stage to thank them for all they had done to support the Garden Party, and they in turn thanked everyone in the community who had got together to achieve so much to make the night one to remember.

Positively Pink AMONG the EWN’s many charitable endeavours over the past 20 years has been sponsoring the annual Positively Pink Ball in La Cala de Mijas.

BACON HOTPOT: A meal made in one pot and baked in the oven.

I DO enjoy making a meal all in one pot which can be prepared ahead and baked in the oven for our evening meal. Our days are busy at Olive Tree Farm and when the lads get back from a working day, they need their food and lots of it!

Bacon Hotpot has been a favourite for many years, but this week I did it slightly differently and it was gone in a flash with plenty of compliments.

Bacon Hotpot with Leeks Ingredients One medium-large leek trimmed, washed and cut into 1.5cm slices

One pack of back bacon or a couple of small gammon slices cut into chunks 2-3 medium potatoes skin on and thinly sliced 150g grated cheese 200ml chicken stock 100ml milk Dried mixed herbs 50g butter (unsalted) Salt and pepper 2 teaspoons of cornflour Fresh parsley chopped for decoration (optional) Method Fry off your bacon/gammon in a heavy base frying pan, add a little oil or butter if it starts to

stick. Strain off the bacon saving any juices when cooked through, set aside and add your butter and all your leeks to the remaining juices. Cook through for a couple of minutes on a medium heat until the white parts start to go translucent.

Sprinkle over the cornflour and stir through, cook for a further minute and then set aside.

Grease an ovenproof casserole dish and layer your ingredients starting with potatoes at the bottom, then bacon, leeks, a handful of cheese, herbs, a little salt and pepper… keep layering and finish with a layer of potatoes, reserving a handful of cheese and a few bacon bits.

Add your milk and stock to a jug and pour over the dish.

Finally, finish with the lcheese and reserved bacon bits.

Cover with a lid or tin foil and bake at 180ºC for 30 - 40 minutes until the potatoes are soft when you prick them with a knife. Remove the lid and put back into the oven for 10 minutes or so to brown the top. I turned the oven up to 200ºC whilst browning it off. Sprinkle with the chopped parsley and serve whilst still nice and hot.

Serves 4.

OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency.

We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Taking it slowly HILARIA BALDWIN, the Spanish-born wife of actor Alec Baldwin, has shared her journey with followers after suffering a tragic miscarriage.

The Majorcan beauty, aged 35, took to Instagram to share a short video of her carrying out a gentle yoga routine around a week after the traumatic event.

The yoga instructor and fitness campaigner, who had been pregnant with her fifth child, told followers: “I’m being super gentle with my body right now.” Hilaria, who shares four children with her famous husband, added: “I have always been open to you all about my family, fitness, pregnancies... and I do not want to keep this from you, just because it is not positive and as shiny as the rest.”

HISTORY was brought to life in the provincial capital with the recreation of an important episode in Macael’s past.

Participants in the municipality’s Quarry Workers and Overlords in the Struggle for Marble festival reenacted the moment in August 1922 when a delegation of labourers went to Almeria to plead for help from the civil governor in resolving the crippling conflict with the quarry chiefs.

There were also songs from the Macael Quarry Workers troupe and a demonstration of stone working using tools from the early 20th century; within minutes a craftsman created a workworn hand representing the soul of the quarry workers.

The Mii has cool exterior styling and inside, the cabin is well-made and beautifully simple, with most controls via a small central screen.

There is good head and leg room for four adults, the boot space at 251 litres is adequate for normal needs and the floor is variable height to accommodate extra items. The rear seats also split-fold to increase space to a substantial 951 litres.

The city hatchback sector is packed with contenders including the VW Up! and Skoda Citigo, both stablemates of the Mii and built on the same platform though with varying features and pricing.

Other popular rivals include the Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo.

However, the Mii stands out in the class, offering a more youthful and cooler image than rivals which have more orthodox styling.

AS hoped, the weekend’s biggest game produced a thriller as Sevilla and Real Betis shared five goals and lots of chances.

Home team Sevilla came out on top 3-2 in one of the biggest derbys in Spain. Munir El Haddadi put them ahead with a 27th minute header, a score line which stood until Giovani Lo Celso equalised 10 minutes into the second half.

It took just four minutes for Pablo Sarabia to restore the lead and then Fran Vazquez made it a two-goal lead after shooting home from the edge of the box on the 65th minute.

It all looked settled, but Betis brought it back to 3-2 through Cristian Tello’s free kick, leaving Sevilla to hang on for the last eight minutes.

The result means Sevilla take over fourth place from Getafe who could only manage a 2-2 draw in another thriller against Valladolid after they lost Mathias Olivera to a red card in the 62nd minute.

TWO of the biggest names in Spanish motorsport could team up for next year’s Dakar rally.

Carlos Sainz has revealed on Radio Marca that there is a chance of competing with the former F1 champion.

Asked about a possible duel against Alonso in the iconic race, Sainz, 57, said: “It would be nice, of course, and also if it was in the same team even more.”

He added: “I’m waiting to see where they say the race is, because it looks like it’s going to be in Saudi Arabia. I need to look at the options too because right now there are two teams where you can run to win - Mini and Toyota - and I’m waiting to see what each says.”

Toyota, the current Dakar champion, would be the team of choice and could bring together the two Spaniards because Sainz, currently in Mini, is free to negotiate his future and Alonso is already ‘signed’ by Toyota.

Alonso, who has Toyota’s approval to race in Dakar 2020, is in line to start warming up for the event in the autumn, with a Moroccan race in September particularly attractive.

Rins takes honours in Austin SPANISH MotoGP fans can look forward to the next race in Jerez on May 5 with anticipation of a home battle after Alex Rins ended a sixyear winning streak in Texas for Marc Marquez.

It was a surprise victory for the Suzuki rider - this was his first in MotoGP - with Marquez starting firm favourite after he had started from pole in Austin for the seventh year in succession.

But Marquez made a rare mistake on the ninth lap when he lost control while leading by nearly four seconds.

He slid off the track, then could not restart his Honda, leaving him
