Police put the brakes on Costa car ‘fraudsters’

By Simon Ward A REGION-WIDE fraud syndicate was exposed after seven people were arrested in three locations up and down the Costa.

Their ruse was to allegedly buy top-end vehicles in Germany and, without paying any VAT, register them here in Spain to unsuspecting victims.

Plans were thwarted after officers discovered a Guardamar del Segura company had registered two vehicles to one person and, only two days later, transferred them a second time to third parties.

After a complex and extensive investigation over three months, it was found that the gang used stolen ID to forge signatures, falsified VAT paperwork and transferred vehicle ownership to people without their consent.

This part of the operation was purely so that the unsuspecting ‘owners’ would be incriminated, once their ‘crime’ was discovered.

FRAUD: Company detected registering cars to the same person.

The investigations uncovered the use of 12 high-end vehicles, estimating a total fraud of more than €48,800.

Five Spanish men and two women (aged between 26 and 52) were arrested in Alicante, Torrevieja and Benidorm.

Three of the 12 cars were recovered because they were still in possession of the fraudsters, while the remaining nine are fully identified and located, pending resolution by the Treasury Administration.

Shot dead

A HOMEOWNER in the south of Spain was shot dead by a group of alleged robbers in the early hours of Monday morning.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident in Mula, Murcia, at 2.30am.

Paramedics were only able to certify the death of the middle-aged victim from a gunshot wound.

Guardia Civil police have opened an investigation.

The Weasleys in Valencia A VALENCIAN festival of indie music, food, arts and crafts had a surprise visit from James and Oliver Phelps, the brothers who played Fred and George Weasley in the Harry Potter films.

Mar Menor boost promised

AHEAD of next month’s elections, one politician has confirmed his commitment to promoting the Mar Menor.

Partido Popular (PP) candidate, Teodoro Garcia, claimed his party would create a high commissioner position at a national level to represent the area.

The politician said: “[We back] the creation of a high commissioner for the promotion and development of the Mar Menor, who will be appointed directly by the president of the government, because this natural, scenic and ecological jewel cannot depend on four municipalities or even one region.”

Garcia added: “The preservation of the Mar Menor has to be a national issue and if we want the government of Spain to have it as a priority we need Pablo Casado to be president of the government,” adding, “he will guarantee that it is on the national agenda in terms of its tourist, economic and ecological potential.”

Explaining what the position would entail, Garcia added: “It would focus on the preservation and conservation of a unique ecosystem in Europe,” adding, “the government of Spain has to get involved and it is best to appoint someone and provide a budget.”

Bulldozer tragedy A 49-YEAR-OLD man died and his colleague, 51, were injured following an accident in the Industrial Park San Carlos on Thursday. The victims were apparently run over by a reversing bulldozer.

Junipers return to parks THE sensitive dune areas of La Mata and other Torrevieja parks have received a boost in the form of 50 juniper trees and other flora.

The ‘Juniperus Macrocarpa’ species had previously been extinct in the province, after forming extensive forests across the Iberian sub-continent in the Middle Ages.

The planting was carried out to strengthen the recovery of the dune forests, facilitated by the Devesa-Albufera Service of the Valencia City Council (who provided the saplings), as well as the CIEF of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development and other local authorities.

Semana Santa (Holy Week in English) takes place during the last week of Lent and coincides with Easter.

Death threat arrests NATIONAL POLICE report that a group of five men have been arrested for ‘coercion, threats and injuries.’

Their victim was an Alicante businessman who allegedly owed them €7,000 from a prolonged property transaction.

Intimidating phone calls were made for a month by the vendor of the property in question, threatening to kill him and his family.

It is alleged that he then appointed the four men to visit

the victim’s house to assault him and demand an extra €23,000.

Their plan was foiled when police arrested them the next day as they waited at a rendezvous point for the monies.

Houses in Polop and Benidorm were searched and the weapons used in the assault (an iron bar and a punch) were found.

The five detainees aged between 21 and 64, of Cuban and Spanish nationality, are held awaiting trial.

Churches benefit A MULTINATIONAL classical choir starred in two packed concerts on the Costa Blanca earlier this month.

The Andante International Choir of sopranos, altos, tenors and basses, performed selections from Vivaldi’s Gloria on Friday April 5 at Parish Nuestra Senora del Pilar in Los Montesinos. On the following Sunday, they performed at Parish Pablo y Pedro in Torrevieja.

Funds raised went to the churches and to Spanish Catholic charity group, Caritas. Other classical music was performed, including John Rutter’s The Lord Bless You and Keep You, Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Faure, O Lord, Hear My Prayer by Jacques Berthier and Who is Silvia, by George Shearing. The choir has just celebrated its second year, with plans to perform more this year. The group comprises singers from England, Holland, Scandinavia and other European countries.

Reforms complete THE Councillor for Parks and Gardens in Torrevieja, Domingo Soler, is pleased to announce that work is now complete, remodelling two new parks in the city.

The 4,200 square-metre Parque Maria is south of the city on the Paseo de los Conquistadores and is made of turf, date palms, shrubs and flowering plants. The old playground has been transformed with a new colour scheme, floor cushioning, bins, and new facilities including a slide, swings, hopscotch, distance jumps and a football pitch with goals and artificial turf.

Murcia CPR drama A YOUNG woman saved the life of an elderly man by giving mouth-to-mouth after he collapsed in Murcia on Saturday evening.

Having fallen to the ground, the saviour rushed over and started resuscitation manoeuvres to maintain a clear airway and provide oxygen to his system.

The drama unfolded in the city’s Plaza de las Flores at about 7pm. The Local Police of Murcia have already christened her ‘the heroine without a cloak.’

She kept him alive for a full 15 minutes before emergency services arrived and took him to hospital.

Quesada walking football team lose to winners ALGARVE Football Tours held their fourth Annual Competition over two days with 21 teams competing, including Esquina Park Rangers from Ciudad Quesada.

More than 1,500 supporters filled the Ferreiras Stadium to watch the increasingly-popular ‘Walking Football’ tournament. Esquina Park Rangers, sponsored by Bar Esquina, entered a team of nine players, supported and encouraged by their wives and girlfriends.

Three leagues competed for the top two positions with the two best third places going through to the finals.

A cleaner safer Almoradi for Holy Week HOLY WEEK in Almoradi is a long-established and popular tourist attraction - a mix of art, music, food and religious celebration which has been celebrated for over 200 years.

Since the 1940s, it expanded with new brotherhoods forming. At first, celebrations were o rg a n i s e d b e t w e e n t h e p a r i s h priest and the presidents of the guilds. But since 1976, the Greater Board of Brotherhoods have taken charge.

Festivities started already on Sunday with the procession on Friday of Dolores, culminating on Easter Sunday, when all of the brotherhoods participate.

Seven years in jail for €800 beheading LAST week, we reported on the suicide of a man whilst on trial for murder. This week, his female accomplice was jailed for seven years.

Their murder was to cover up the theft of €800 from a bank account, believed to be that of the victim.

The sinister couple also attempted to dismember the body, the Provincial Court of Alicante revealed. Her seven-year incarceration is made up of four years for the illegal detention of the victim, two years for fraud and another year for concealment of the murder.

Her husband’s suicide was considered an adm i ssi on of gui l t f or t he m ur der, which dates back to August 2016, in an apparent fight over a parking space in Torrevieja. The 62-year-old victim was beaten, kidnapped, robbed, killed and dismembered with the help of a domestic employee.

Different body parts were disposed of in different containers around the neighbourhood. The house was cleaned and decorated later in attempt to hide their crimes.

Mafia warning

Cristiano Tomassi, an Italian police officer specialising in probing organised crime, said there were now entire neighbourhoods in some European cities controlled by gangs.

Tomassi and others have warned mafia clans including the Sicilian Cosa Nostra were moving into parts of Spain as well as other EU countries and the US, Australia and Canada.

Tomassi said: “Why does it seem like nothing’s going on in those areas? Because the mafia is in control, but it is not healthy control. It is like a cancer which progresses.

A FAMILY ran to safety on Spain’s Costa Blanca after their vehicle burst into flames in the middle of a busy street.

After pulling over the fire spread to another vehicle parked at the roadside in L’Alfàs del Pi on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters and Local Police were quickly on the scene, but both vehicles were gutted.

No personal injuries are believed to have been suffered.

CONCERNS: Washington’s stance towards Cuba has hardened under Trump.

Cuba dispute SPAIN and other European countries are bracing for a dispute with the US after Washington announced plans to reinstate penalties for companies with investments in Cuba.

Officials in Madrid have reportedly raised their concerns with the administration of US President Donald Trump over the plan to reinstate the Helms Burton law.

The law, which was suspended more than 20 years ago, allowed US courts to claim damages against companies which partner with Cuban firms on the Caribbean island.

Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said: “Spain and the EU are against the reinstatement because we understand that there is an agreement which provides for a permanent and systematic renewal every six months of the non-application of it.”

US National Security Advisor John Bolton is due to announce the reapplication of the law today (Thursday).

The Trump administration’s stance on Cuba has hardened following the president’s predecessor Barack Obama’s efforts to normalise relations with the Communist government in Havana.

REPUBLIC CALL: Protests took place across Spain on Sunday.

By Joe Gerrard HUNDREDS of protesters demonstrated in Madrid and other cities in Spain on Sunday for a third republic on the 88th anniversary of the pre-Civil War state’s founding.

Those protesting carried the red, yellow and purple tricolour flag flown during the days of the Second Republic which was founded on April 14, 1931.

The republic was overthrown in 1939 when former dictator Francisco Franco defeated loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. Demonstrators in Madrid gathered at the Puerta del Sol where the Second Republic was proclaimed 88 years to the day following King Alfonso XIII’s abdication.

Protesters, who were joined by members of the leftist Podemos and Izquierda Unida (IU) parties, called for the monarchy to be abolished. Some marched under the slogan: ‘For labour, political and social rights, down with the monarchy, long live the Republic.’ Others carried placards criticising the ‘regime of ‘78,’ or restoration of the monarchy and creation of the modern Spanish state after the death of Franco in 1975.

Some marched in favour of feminism, while others demonstrated against the influence of big business in politics.

Demonstrations also took place in Cordoba, Guadalajara, Jerez, Oviedo, Pamplona, Valencia, Vigo and Zaragoza.

Left out of middle class

MISSING OUT: Millennials are finding it harder to enter the middle class.

by Joe Gerrard HALF of those born in Spain between 1983 and 2002 entered the middle class when they reached 20, compared to 60 per cent of baby boomers, a study has found.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found the millennial generation in Spain were increasingly being shut out of the middle class.

The international development body said a rise in the costs of housing, education and healthcare was leading to a shrinking middle-class. The OECD has called for governments to step in to re-

verse a trend which it said was happening across the world.

About 60 per cent of those born between 1942 and 1964, members of the so-called ‘baby boom’ generation, were middle-class by age 20.

The equivalent figure for ‘Generation X,’ those born between 1965 and 1982, was 58 per cent.

The proportion dropped to 50 per cent for those born between 1983 and 2002, according to the OECD. The OECD defined a middle-class family as one earning between 75 per cent and 200 per cent of the average yearly salary, between €11,450 and €30,542 in Spain’s case.

Russian ‘money laundering’ probe SPAIN’S National Court is set to probe allegations that some €35 million of Russian public money was siphoned off and laundered in Spain.

Judge Ismael Moreno, of the court’s Second Court of Instruction, detailed the allegations from anti-corruption prosecutors in a writ issued on Friday.

The judge asked prosecutors to list people and companies who should be investigated. Around 100 people and entities, including senior Russian officials in Vladimir Putin’s government, are thought to be implicated.

The allegations date back to 2007 when more than €203 million disappeared from Russian public coffers.

Some of the money is believed to have moved through the British hedge fund Hermitage Capital Management in the guise of

Assange Spain claim JULIAN ASSANGE was targeted by a spying campaign before his arrest and Spain was offered information on him for a price according to the website’s director.

Kristinn Hrafnsson claimed an unidentified individual offered material gathered about the Wikileaks founder while he lived at the Ecuadorian embassy in London to Spain for €3 million.

Assange lived at the embassy from 2012 under diplomatic asylum until his arrest last week.

GROWING: Spain’s population went up by 0.6 per cent in 2018.

Population soars SPAIN’S population has reached 47 million for the first time since 2013 and immigrations have helped keep it on the rise, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Figures from the INE’s population register showed Spain’s population grew by 0.6 per cent in 2018, the third year in which the number of people has risen.

The arrival of more than 290,570 immigrations more than cancelled out a decline of 6,186 in the native population, INE data showed.

Spanish nationals make up 89.3 per cent of the population compared to 5,025,264 foreign-born people living as residents in the country who make up the remaining 10.7 per cent.

eign residents are from the EU while the rest came from elsewhere, according to the INE. The three largest non-Spanish groups were Moroccans at 812,412, Romanians at 669,434 and the British at 249,015.

It comes as previous INE figures showed Spain’s birth rate during the first half of 2018 was the lowest since records began in 1941.

Tourism holds BRITAIN and Spain remain popular destinations for travellers from either country despite Brexit, industry data has shown.

Spending from British travellers has grown by 5.4 per cent so far this year compared to 2018, according to figures from the Exceltur industry association.

Data from the Hosteltur hotel body showed the number of bookings made for Easter week has risen by 12 per cent compared to last April.

The Costa Blanca’s HOSBEC industry association’s figures showed the number of reservations made by British holidaymakers in Benidorm grew by 7 per cent year-on-year in the second half of March.

“The British are returning positive figures despite uncertainty over Brexit,” the association said.

British travellers are still the biggest single nonSpanish group of holidaymakers in Benidorm, the same data showed. They accounted for 42.7 per cent of all overnight stays in the second half of March, HOSBEC said.

The figures follow a push from the Costa Blanca tourism industry and authorities to draw British travellers during this spring.

HOSBEC said in February the industry believed bookings from British travellers would pick back up once the factors causing Brexit uncertainty were resolved.

Theresa May secured the six-month extension after meeting with leaders from the EU27 in Brussels.

Together they struck a compromise between May’s request for a short extension and Brussels officials including EU Council President Donald Tusk’s call for a year-long delay.

The agreement, dubbed a ‘flextension,’ allows lawmakers in London time to come to a consensus on the terms of Britain’s withdrawal. Britain will be able to leave the EU if a deal is passed before the deadline.

But an EU summit will be held in June to monitor Britain’s behaviour after leaders including French president Emmanuel Macron expressed concerns it could undermine EU business going forward.

By Joe Gerrard THE official window for general election campaigning has now opened, following a lively precampaign phase which saw parties set out their stalls to voters.

The official period for campaigning began on Friday. Posters have now gone up in towns and cities across the country and party leaders are currently on the trail to galvanise their support bases and win over undecided voters.

The talking points have broadly fallen along a left-right divide with some cross over and exchange between the two.

All parties have released detailed manifestos featuring policies on education, the economy, healthcare, defence, foreign policy and social issues and others. But a small number of points have made it to the fore.

Profile: Regional parties WITH a general election looming on Sunday April 28, we are profiling each of the political parties vying for victory in the vote.

When voters cross their ballots, not only in the general election but also for local, regional and European polls in May, there will be region-specific parties standing.

Regional parties vary in ideology, policy platforms and purpose. CataluĂąa and the Basque Country are both home to nationalist and pro-independence groups, but there are others who stand to campaign on issues which are particular to a given region.

Coalicio Compromis stand exclusively in the Valencia Region. They espouse left-wing, environmental and Valencian regional positions including promoting its language and is currently part of the governing coalition in the Corts Valencianes assembly.

Mallorca is home to the Mes per Mallorca and the Proposta per les Illes party. The former is on the left while the latter lies in the political centre and both have a handful of seats in the Balearic Islands Assembly.

In Andalucia, the far-left Candidatura Unitaria de Tabajoadores (CUT) has one seat in the region’s parliament.

RIP: Neus Catala dedicated her life to defending human rights.

Nazi camp survivor ONE of the last Spanish survivors of the Nazi concentration camps has died at the age of 103.

Neus Catala passed away on Saturday in her home town of Els Guiamets in Tarragona.

“Today the anti-Fascist and internationalist fighter Neus Catala left us. In these dark times in which we are living, let her memory serve as an example,” Els Guiamets Council posted on Twitter.

Born in October 1915, the committed re-

publican and feminist was a nurse during the Spanish Civil War and helped 180 children in her care escape to France. She later joined the French resistance, but was reported to the Nazis and deported to Ravensbrück and later to a Czech camp. She was liberated in May 1945.

To mark her 100th birthday the Catalan government declared 2015 Neus Catala Year in recognition of her life dedicated to defending human rights.

Euthanasia case continues A MAN who helped his wife with multiple sclerosis to die earlier this month could go on trial at a gender violence court following a Madrid judge’s ruling last week.

Angel Hernandez, 70, turned himself in to Madrid police after helping wife Maria Jose Carrasco, 61, die.

The two made a video before her death in which Carrasco confirmed she was of sound mind and wanted to die after living with a chronic motor condition for 30 years. The video showed her barely able to move or talk.

But the judge investigating the case has now said it will be passed onto a gender violence court because it is out of her court’s jurisdiction. Hernandez told Spanish media: “I am a militant feminist and this is an insult. I will not accept being told

Pilar Martin-Najera, head of the Prosecutor’s Office gender violence division, said they would challenge the move on the grounds Hernandez’s actions

On verge of extinction EXPERTS are warning that Spain’s rarest bird could soon disappear from its last Andalucian strongholds in Granada and Almeria Researcher from the University of Madrid, Juan Traba has exposed the ‘delicate situation,’ in which the Chersophilus duponti (Dupont’s Lark) is found in Andalucia, since it only lives in four enclaves: Granada (Lomadel Padul) and Almeria (Cabo de Gata, Sierra de Gádor and Tabernas-Sorbas).

The last 10 years has seen a population decline of 66.8 per cent, putting it close to extinction in the region. According to the last census in 2018, there are only 15 males of the species left in Andalucia.

It is estimated that the species could disappear from Andalucia in five to 10 years ‘putting an end to the presence of one of the most emblematic and exclusive birds of the natural Andalucian steppes.’

Co-existence is the key to success SPAIN will only succeed as a country if it can overcome regional tensions and division and offer a positive vision of co-existence, the country’s foreign minister has said.

Josep Borrell claimed the narrative about Spain and Spanish history had been captured by nationalists both regionally and at a country-wide level who are on the ‘wrong side of history.’

Spain has not had anyone capable of writing its story in terms of its positive contribution to the world, the minister added.

Martinez Montes’ book comes as part of a Foreign Ministry strategy to promote Spain’s image abroad. It discusses the country’s contribution to a host of areas including religion, language and economics. Spain needed to counter a ‘premodern’ and ‘authoritarian’ image pushed by critics following the 2008 recession, the eurozone crisis and more recently the Catalan independence row, Borrell said.

If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org.

A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname.

The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person).

Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe.

After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate.

After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months.

The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross.

Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery.

Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million.

A giant bill

By Joe Gerrard GREENPEACE has hung a giant bill on a Madrid skyscraper to raise awareness of what they claimed was the price of political and corporate inaction on climate change.

The environmental NGO hung the 300-metre high banner on the side of one of the Colon towers in the Spanish capital on Thursday. Inaction from politicians and corporations has racked up an environmental and social bill which will ultimately have to be paid by the people, Greenpeace said. “They are

costing us our lives, they are costing us the planet.

And we are not going to pay the bill,� Greenpeace said. “The bad practices of large companies and current policies not only destroys the environment, but also creates an increasingly unequal society with fewer rights,� the NGO added.

Greenpeace’s protest comes as demonstrations against climate change have stepped up in recent months. Spanish school pupils have repeatedly joined hundreds of thousands of others from around the world in striking from lessons every Friday in protest against pollution.

By Sally Underwood HOSPITAL Quironsalud Valencia has opened a specialist labour unit, complete with birthing pool.

A spokesperson for the hospital explained their goal is to offer a wide variety of delivery options so each woman can decide to give birth in the way that best suits her.

At the hospital’s facilities, parents and family members will be able to stay in the ICU with the baby, thanks to the Family Room located in the Neonatal ICU and Humanised Paediatrics Area.

According to Dr. Fernando Lopez Baeza, Head of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Service Team: “Our purpose is to make delivery more natural and human, as well as to provide early neonatal care, trying to enable the mother's central role, respecting her preferences as much as possible regarding the organisation and assistance provided by healthcare services during the extremely special and unique moment that is the birth of her son or daughter; with maximum participation

Banks drafted for rail bonds SPAIN’S ADIF railway infrastructure body has called in four leading banks to sell bonds worth at least €500 million to fund the building of new high-speed lines.

Spanish banks BBVA and Santander will sell the bonds alongside London-based HSBC and France’s Societe General.

The sale is set to be done as ‘green bonds’ which were first offered in 2017 and again last year.

ADIF president Isabel Pardo said green bonds were part of plans to improve sustainability and become more environmentally-friendly.

State aid for small firms

IMF Spain deficit forecast SPAIN’S public spending deficit will be 2.3 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) this year and remain below 3 per cent afterwards, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted.

The IMF forecasted a fall in the difference between the Treasury’s income and outgoings of 0.4 percentage points from 2018 to this year.

Spain’s deficit was 2.7 per cent of GDP last year.

The deficit will remain slightly below 2.5 per cent of GDP until 2022 when it will rise and reach 2.8 per cent of GDP by 2024, the IMF

The IMF said then that ‘credible’ measures would be needed to bring the deficit down.

The international lending body said the forecasts were based in part on predictions that economic growth will slow in Spain and elsewhere in the coming years.

SPANISH government ministers have approved funding worth €452 million to support small and medium-sized companies.

Industry Minister Reyes Maroto, who announced the measures last week ahead of their approval, said the package would be split into three parts.

Almost €96 million will be available for young entrepreneurs, €50 million will go to boosting overseas trade for companies and €307 million will help with energy efficiency.

Maroto said: “These measures seek to eliminate obstacles to small business growth and international expansion.”

Number of companies rises A TOTAL of 9,386 companies were created in Spain in February, up 7.4 per cent on the same month in 2018 the latest National Institute for Statistics (INE) figures show.

Almost €848 million in capital was invested into the founding of the companies during February, an increase of 86.7 per cent year-on-year. A total of 2,311 companies folded in February this year, ac-

cording to INE data.

About 19.4 per cent of new firms were in the trade sector while 15.6 per cent were in the construction industry.

A total of 82.5 per cent of companies which folded did so voluntarily, with 6.9 per cent ceasing to exist due to mergers and 10.6 per cent closing for other reasons.

Turnover increases SPAIN’S chemical industry increased its turnover by 4 per cent to more than €65.6 billion in 2018, the largest amount of growth ever recorded for the sector the Business Federation of the Spanish Chemical Industry (FEIQUE) said.

Double up FRENCH supermarket chain Carrefour has almost doubled its Spanish stores from 582 in 2004 to 1,008 currently, making Spain second only to France in terms of the number of shops, according to a new company report.

New planes THE Iberia airline is set to see the delivery of four new Airbus A350-900 planes by 2023 as part of a larger order made by parent company IAG, with the Spanish carrier the first to receive the newest model.

Then we attended the l a u n c h o f t h e B e s t Yo u Legacy Club Marbella, for whom we are again media partners. The club aims to help people leave a legacy, whether it be in the business world, charitable causes or even something more personal.

What both these events have in common is that they bring together people from all parts of the expat community who want to make a real difference -just like the EWN always has.

ONE beneficiary of Euro Weekly News during its history was Leo Bermejo, who died from a rare form of cancer despite a fundraising effort and campaign on his behalf.

Many readers will remember Leo by his nickname Leo the Lion. The boy, from Vera Playa in Almeria Province, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer in September 2015.

Leo’s family contacted Euro Weekly News in January 2017 when he was aged four shortly after he had several tumours removed.

Leo’s mother Karen Keefe said they aimed to raise €176,000 so Leo could travel to the US for pioneering treatment which they hoped would rid him of the illness.

Euro Weekly News journalists soon got to work on raising awareness for the four-year-old’s plight. More than €75,000 was raised for Leo in eight days, in part thanks to our publicity and efforts on the ground from Almeria Sales Manager Jackie Butcher.

Attention from the public soon followed. Former Real Madrid defender Leo Bermejo, who shared a love of football with the four-year-old as well as a name, retweeted a Euro Weekly News Twitter post calling for help.

By May 2017 Leo had flown to the US and completed his proton therapy treatment. He was welcomed back in Almeria on Sunday May 7. But an MRI scan in September of that year showed the tumours were once again growing.

An urgent appeal for more support, including for a dedicated private nurse, was made with the help of Euro Weekly News in November.

But it was not enough and weeks later, on Friday December 1, Leo passed away days before his fifth birthday. His last words were: “I love you.”

Karen told Euro Weekly News after Leo’s passing that she was grateful for the support she had received. She added this newspaper’s publicity had helped to show the true face of cancer in children.

Fran told the Euro Weekly News her and business partner Steph were among the first in Spain to get a magic mirror.

“It’s great to bring fun and joy to people and to see them enjoying themselves whenever we go to an event with the Magic Mirror,” Fran said.

The company offers the service from €375 for two hours and are GPR Protected under European Privacy rules.

Costa Blanca Magic Mirror is able to offer bespoke packages to customers depending on the event and their needs, Fran said.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONCE again, it appears strangely coincidental that a subject I chose in a previous column seems to manifest on a wider scale the following week.

In the last blurb, I wrote about the pathetic retributions being passed on by our so-called Judges.

Well this past week, one of those judgements truly did take the whole tin.

It concerned the case of the Turkish born toerag who has apparently been fighting deportation for some five years. This man is a violent criminal, who has never applied for citizenship, and over the years, has been convicted of robbery, criminal damage, burglary, assault and shoplifting.

In 2016 a judge decided because he had become the member of a notorious North London gang, he had (wait for it) ‘integrated well, into a part of UK society.’ The judge decided this made him a ‘home-grown criminal’ and allowed him to stay. (I defy anyone to make that one up!). In a series of immigration appeals his blood- sucking lawyers have cost the British taxpayers untold thousands of pounds. And he’s still here - awaiting yet another public purse draining appeal.

Sometime I truly do lose the will to live. What with the Brexit fiasco and judgements like this, is it any wonder our once proud British nation has become the laughing stock of the world? If we’d had this lot of ‘do gooders’ and pathetic politi-

Another so-called ‘judgement’ also caught the ol’ boy’s eye this week. A serial drink-driver was ‘given a chance’ by Judge Sarah Buckingham,

even after the accused had crashed into three other vehicles and needed rescuing from her own blazing car. This was her third offence and she admitted to dangerous driving while three times over the limit. It wasn’t even the judge’s almost

unbelievable decision to give her another chance it was actually her reason for doing so. She was deferring sentence for three months, she said, to see if the defendant could address her issues ‘because she was a woman.’

‘Had Miss Parry been a man,’ the judge added; ‘it would have been straight down the stairs.’

Hold on a minute, is that not a more blatant case of sexism than you would ever be likely to hear?

Can you imagine the scream up if she had told a man that if he were a woman, he would have been immediately incarcerated? Loose Women would have had a field day. The roads to Westminster would have been jammed with Boadicea lookalikes and men would be going without their dinner or sexual favours for weeks.

As it is I have yet to see one protest from the poor beleaguered males of the populace. Come on fellas you can’t all have become transgenders.

Oh, I dunno, the way things are going, it may not be a bad idea!

HAVE you heard about Daniel Mallory (aka AJ Finn), best-selling author of The Woman in the Window who made up a life for himself? Can he refuse to pay?

AT our community AGM they advised us that the garage needs to be refurbished inside and that quotes would be obtained. I objected, but it was passed by a majority vote.

My argument is that I do not have a parking place or one of the storage rooms, but they say it is a community area.

The parking and storage rooms have in the past been sold off by some of the residents to outsiders.

My property did not come with a garage so why should I have to pay for its upkeep?

What’s worse, is my share of the cost is eight times more than someone who only has a parking place. Have I got any rights not to contribute?

Don’t listen to sat nav Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man

still giving directions so ‘it’ wasn’t lost but I sure was. It had been raining and the track was seriously muddy and the car was getting pulled into tractor tracks.

Yeah, I know you are thinking ‘idiot, w h y d id you go on the tra c k in firs t place?’ Well I honestly thought Google maps wouldn’t take me into such a place.

When my car sat nav runs out of road it just tells you to find a proper road.

But Google maps now tells me to turn right, then sharp right again which makes me think I’m going back on myself.

Not to make it even scarier, this mud track is even narrower and there is a river on one side with no wall or barrier.

The car was sliding all over the place and Mrs S now insists on getting out of the car and walking.

Her theory was that if the car goes into the river there is no point in us both dying - she can get help. So thoughtful.

Then at last we see a motorway again and the amazing thing is this mud track does bring you right up to the side of the shopping centre! So here’s the moral of the tale. DO NOT LISTEN TO YOUR SAT NAV IF IT STARTS TO TAKE YOU OFF ROAD! It’s just being a clever dick trying to prove ‘you may be lost but I’m not!’

THE horror journey home from Sevilla: We decided to stop at a shopping centre.

My car ’s sat nav couldn’t find it so I then used Google maps on my ‘phone.

All was fine and we even saw a motorway sign that we were going in the right direction.

Then the nightmare started. I took a wrong turning and the ‘phone recalculated the route taking us down a road that was running parallel to the motorway.

We then came to a no entry sign and I had to turn left which was a narrower road but I’m thinking Google maps must know what it was doing.

Oh boy was I wrong! The road all of a sudden became a very narrow mud track so I couldn’t turn round. I thought it was only going to run for a few yards and then the App was telling me to take the next left which I thought would take me back on to a ‘proper road’ but it didn’t.

All I could see was fields! How could my Google maps take me here? It was mikesenker@gmail.com.

THERE is a lot of confusion over registering on the Padron. To do so one must be habitually resident in the town, so that excludes holiday home owners. I know for many years some town halls have turned a blind eye or even encouraged such registration. The municipality get financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and government authorities for the provision of services.

Until a few years ago the Padron registration was valid until cancelled by the named person. However, now EU Nationals must renew their registration every five years, non EU nationals every two years.

Fact checking REGARDING a letter concerning the theft of an EU Citizen’s Registration certificate (green paper) in your previous edition.

The writer complained that having reported the theft in Barcelona, upon applying for a replacement they had problems because the report (denuncia) did not show that the certificate had been stolen. Whilst inconvenient to the writer it should be apparent that a crime report showing just a synopsis of what was stolen cannot be used as proof that a specific item was stolen. In this case the EU Citizen Registration Cert.

The set fee, currently, to replace a certificate is €12, whether that is because of loss, theft, change of address etc.

‘Horror’ at smash I WAS horrified to see the photos in last week’s Euro Weekly News of the bus which smashed into nine cars in Malaga after its driver had a heart attack.

It is so lucky that no one was injured, although I still feel sorry for pedestrians and owners of the cars which were hit as the incident must have come as quite a shock.

You reported that the driver had previously undergone a medical test. This incident is a stark reminder that despite medical checks and restrictions for some suffering from particular conditions, these are never any guarantees about safety behind the wheel.

OUR VIEW Ensuring opportunity A NEW study which showed fewer millennials are making it into Spain’s middle class compared to previous generations makes for worrying reading.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found half of those born between 1983 and 2002 have or will make it into the middle class by age 20. The equivalent figure for ‘baby boomers,’ those born between 1942 and 1964, was 60 per cent.

All governments champion economic prosperity and their commitment to it is shown by the enthusiasm of officials to cite Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures among others.

But ensuring a country is rich is half the battle. The key to true prosperity is making sure that wealth reaches as many people as possible.

Good, well-funded education for the young and quality jobs for them once they leave school is a crucial part of this.

Not only does it benefit them, but it ensures public coffers are furnished with adequate tax revenue to spend for the benefit of us all.

This virtuous cycle, known as the ‘multiplier effect’ in economics, can break and become a vicious one if wealth is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands.

An EU study found a lack of opportunities during the last recession saw 133,000 highly-skilled workers leave Spain from 2007 to 2017.

If such workers leave they take their talents with them and deprive the public purse and society with the means of making economic improvements. Once established, that vicious cycle is hard to break.

Reducing appearance of wrinkles naturally DELAYING wrinkles for as long as possible can simply be a matter of good habits.

The basic recommendations include using appropriate protection from the sun, not smoking, not drinking too much and never sleeping with make-up on. It is also important to moisturise, hydrate and -claim some health professionals - feed the skin with antioxidants. Sleep is vital. A survey showed that after five nights of poor sleep, participants had up to double the amount of fine lines and wrinkles and a lot more brown spots than those getting a good night’s rest.

Sleeping face-down or face-side on the pillow over a long period of time can also cause the skin to wrinkle. It is recommended to sleep on your back.

Getting more vitamin C may help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A study of 4,000 women carried out in 2007 found that those who had higher intakes of vitamin C had lower levels of wrinkles and dryness.

Another major source of skin problems is thought to be stress.

THERE are currently 1.2 billion cars on the world’s roads, according to research from the Bernstein Institute which forecasts there will be two billion by 2040.

SPORTS carmaker Porsche has unveiled more details about the design of its new 911 Cabriolet.

The German carmaker said the new model featured innovative lightweight components and had a lot to offer drivers.

The body of the car itself will be made from a composite of different materials which cuts the weight of the shell by 7 per cent.

“No less than 10 methods are involved in assembling the body of the new 911.

“The body of the new 911 consists of a multimaterial mix and is thus taking the next big step in intelligent lightweight design,” the car maker said.

“The 911 stays unwaveringly on course even when driven with a sporty driving style on sections of road with different surfaces,” Porsche added.

Designers achieved the weight reduction by creating a hybrid design in the A-pillar which guarantees a high degree of protection for drivers and passengers in the event the vehicle overturns.

The changes, which have shaved 2.7 kilograms off the car ’s total weight, have also meant it has a more dynamic performance and handling. The composite material used consists

of three different elements. These are the Organo sheet, the die-cast ribs and the structural foam. Weigh-saving has also been achieved with a greater use of aluminium both in the 911 Coupe and Cabriolet models.

The outer skin is now made entirely of aluminium and the new doors are made entirely of aluminium sheet. The changes also make production more efficient, Porsche said.

The Mii’s driving dynamics are very good. The car has a neat agile feel, precise steering and assured handling and composure. Even with the sports suspension on the test model, ride comfort was still excellent.

The city hatchback sector is packed with contenders including the VW Up! and Skoda Citigo, both stablemates of the Mii and built on the same platform though with varying features and pricing. Other popular rivals include the Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo.

However, the Mii stands out in the class, offering a more youthful and cooler image than rivals which have more orthodox styling.

Rins takes honours in Austin SPANISH MotoGP fans can look forward to the next race in Jerez on May 5 with anticipation of a home battle after Alex Rins ended a sixyear winning streak in Texas for Marc Marquez.

It was a surprise victory for the Suzuki rider - this was his first in MotoGP - with Marquez starting firm favourite after he had started from pole in Austin for the seventh year in succession.

But Marquez made a rare mistake on the ninth lap when he lost control while leading by nearly four seconds.

He slid off the track, then could not restart his Honda, leaving him out of the race.

Rins still had to overhaul Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi who inherited the lead after Marquez’s crash and managed to hold on tenaciously. But on lap 17 (of 20) Rins swept past and went on to win by nearly half a second from Italian great Rossi.

Australian Jack Miller had a good race in the non-works team Pramac Ducati to come in third, with Italian

It took just four minutes for Pablo Sarabia to restore the lead and then Fran Vazquez made it a two-goal lead after shooting home from the edge of the box on the 65th minute.

Manzano’s report to La Liga bosses went on to say that the Spanish international continued to swear and grabbed the official ‘on numerous occasions’ after he had been shown a red card.

The ban, which will see Costa also miss the first game of next season, is the biggest in Spanish football since Pepe was hit with a 10-match punishment in 2009.
