COSTA DE ALMERÍA YOUR PAPER, YOUR VOICE, YOUR OPINION

More flights please! By Cathy Elelman A SOCIAL media campaign group is pressing for increased flights between UK airports and Almeria. The Campaign for Almeria Airport Frequent Flights particularly wants more flights to the provincial airport from UK destinations currently not served or which lost flights after the collapse of Monarch. The Facebook action group was the brainchild of Daniel Northover. “I launched the campaign as a result of the ongoing inconvenience in getting to Almeria outside the summer months,” Daniel told the Euro Weekly News. Daniel relocated to Liverpool three years ago with his partner Orlando. He has been a regular visitor to Almeria to see family who live in the province, flying out of Manchester. “When I moved here, there were regular flights to Almeria throughout the year,” Daniel said. “However, with the collapse of Monarch, we lost a good chunk of services and had none over the winter. “We hoped that a new airline would take the routes as they always seemed well subscribed, but nothing seems to have happened and no information provided about their status,” Daniel continued. This has left Daniel and Orlando having to make al-

is a good time to have launched the initiative, especially after reading an article in the EWN that the province was looking to promote itself as a winter holiday destination to a number of countries in northern Europe, including the UK. “Obviously there’s some political will to increase flights, and now would be a good time to capitalise on that interest.” The action campaign highlights the shortage of UKAlmeria connections outside peak holiday times and to airports outside the southeast of England, but Daniel points out there is demand

Health & Beauty GOING GREEN: Garajonay National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Looking lush THIS woodland on the otherwise volcanic and arid Canary Islands comes as the world celebrates International Forest Day today (Thursday). The Garajonay National Park covers an area of 40-square-kilometre La Gomera. Its name comes from the Garajonay rock formation, the highest point on La Gomera at 1,487 metres. Woodlands covers around 70 per cent of the Garajonay National Park. It is considered the best example of Canarian laurisilva. Laurisilva refers to a type of sub-

tropical forest that covered almost all of southern Europe during the Tertiary geological period between 66 million and 2.6 million years ago. Although it is named as one woodland, Garajonay is made up of several varieties of forest. Humid areas in valleys to the north are home to the richest and most complex forests, while higher altitudes remain the preserve of hardier types of foliage. The woodland is home to the Canary laurel, Laurus novocanariensis, which grows between three and 20

Immigrant boat arrest ALMERIA police arrested a Senagalese man for trying to bring immigrants into Spain illegally after a rubber dinghy with 48 Sub-Saharans on board was spotted by a cargo ship and intercepted in the Alboran Sea. The immigrants said he had warned them during the 10-hour crossing from Morocco that if they were rescued to tell police they had all taken

turns manning the tiller and keeping an eye on the compass. Police also reported each immigrant has paid around €2,500 to make the crossing on the seven-metre long dinghy. Police charged the detainee with a crime against the rights of foreign citizens. So far this year National Police in Almeria have arrested eight individuals on the same charges and have dealt with 32 boats, assisting more than 1,300 people.

Preventing flooding FLOOD prevention works are underway in the naturist area of Vera Playa. Vera Finance Councillor Alberto Clemente said the €113,000 of rainwater channelling measures “are going to resolve the continuous flooding problems which the area suffers in the rainy months, especially in the autumn.” The fact that most streets have no incline, a lack of storm drains and the volume of rainwater which can flow down from the Pueblo Salinas area make the naturist zone prone to accumulations of water in downpours, which gets into basements and leaves streets impassable. The company CODEUR is responsible for carrying out the works, with a threemonth completion date. Works have also started near the Galasa offices, another area of the municipality where flooding is a common problem when there is a lot of rain. Gutters are being cleaned up and improvements are being made to the road surfaces. In addition, two 400-litre capacity storm tanks are being installed. The water collected in the giant tanks will be reused for irrigation and for cleaning. “This situation occurs every year, three or four times, which compels the council to carry out cleaning work, to repair surfaces, and in short to return public roads to their

He also referred to the damage to private property and the nuisance the flooding represents for local residents, remarking that the local authority has to take action every time there is torrential rain, at some considerable expense.

Lopez referred to the ‘current government team’s commitment to providing a definitive solution,’ stating, “hence we have allocated an important share of the budget to eliminating this problem which every year affects a large number of residents, and which results in large outlays from the municipal coffers.”

Prime suspect GUARDIA CIVIL have identified a suspect in a house break-in case. The burglary from a property in the Atochares area of Nijar occurred at the end of October. The thief forced open the front door, getting away with jewellery, a camera and €500 in cash. A couple of months later, the victim reported she had happened across one of the bracelets stolen from her home at a party in San Isidro; she spotted it on the wrist of another guest, an inscription on the item proving it was hers. Having identified the woman wearing the bracelet, the Guardia then identified the person she had got it from, now considered a prime suspect in the burglary investigation.

SHOCK DEATHS: The family reportedly lived in a squat in Godella.

Child deaths shock Spain By Sally Underwood POLICE have arrested two parents in Godella, Valencia, accused of murdering their young children. The couple’s five-month-old and three-anda-half-year-old children were allegedly found half-buried near the family’s home where they were last seen last Wednesday. According to media reports, the parents have given contra-

dictory statements about what happened to the pair, with the father reportedly claiming their mother had drowned them. Spanish media have suggested the couple could suffer from mental health problems and that the mother had claimed her son had been possessed by the devil. The Guardia Civil said they are not yet certain what caused the children’s deaths but explained a post mortem is due to take place soon.

DECISION: Franco (inset) will be re-interred at Mingorrubio. THE Spanish government has announced the remains of General Franco will be transferred from his resting place in the Valley of the Fallen to a cemetery in El Pardo on June 10. He will be re-interred at Mingorrubio where his wife, Carmen Polo, is buried, and which is known as the last resting place of presidents, ministers and artists.

Vice president of the government Carmen Calvo, announced the news following a Council of Ministers meeting, saying: “This decision must be complied with by any government, unless it changes the procedures,” a reference to the upcoming general election. Calvo added that the date had been chosen to ensure the politically contentious move

would not happen during the elections. It also allows time for Franco’s family to complete judicial proceedings; they have taken the government to court to oppose the exhumation of Spain’s late dictator. The date can be delayed should the Supreme Court require more time to reach a decision.

BREXIT BRIEF

Borrell on Brexit SPAIN’S Foreign Minister has warned against an ‘eternal Brexit,’ as a delay to the withdrawal date became more likely this week. Josep Borrell said problems were being caused by Britain currently having one foot in and one foot out of the bloc after MPs have repeatedly blocked the proposed Withdrawal Agreement. “Let’s be logical, it does not seem that an agreement different to the current one can be found. Therefore Britain has to modify some of its initial plans,” Borrel said. “We already know what Britain does not want, we would like to know what it wants,” he added. The Foreign Minister added he would support the withdrawal date, currently set for Friday March 29, being pushed back but for no longer than two to three weeks. British officials have floated Saturday June 1 as a possible new date. “It would be ideal, frankly, for the British parliament to accept Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal. That would eliminate doubts and we could grant a purely technical extension to implement the agreement, otherwise I’m afraid this is going to take longer than necessary,” Borrell said.

Deal in doubt By Joe Gerrard A DELAY to Brexit appeared increasingly likely this week after the speaker of the British Parliament said the government could not hold a new vote without substantial deal changes. John Bercow said on Monday that he would not allow the government to put the proposed Withdrawal Agreement to a House of Commons vote in its current form. The third meaningful vote due to be held on Tuesday was ‘substantially’ the same as the one where MPs rejected British prime minister Theresa May’s proposed deal a week previously, the speaker added. The Commons agreed to rule out a no-deal Brexit ‘under any circumstances,’ and also backed a delay to Brexit in principle. That is May’s only option unless she can secure changes to the Withdrawal Agreement and get MPs’ approval in the eight days until Brexit day on Friday March 29. Bercow’s intervention comes as

Unity push

SETBACKS: May now faces seeking a Brexit delay after Bercow’s (inset) intervention. Brexit minister Kwasi Kwarteng said May would write to European Council president Donald Tusk to ask for a delay to the withdrawal date. The prime minister would then return to parliament to ask for lawmakers’ approval if Tusk lends his backing to the plan, Kwarteng added. Meanwhile, the European Council has agreed a raft of measures cover-

ing a no-deal Brexit in case an extension is not possible. Brussels officials said the legislative acts covered British nationals living in EU member states and protected the rights of EU27 nationals in Britain. Flights to and from Britain as well as road freight and passenger traffic and fishing were also covered on the condition that Britain implements similar arrangements, the Council said.

BRITAIN’S Church of England has said it is encouraging parishes to hold ‘cafestyle’ meetings on the weekend of March 30, days after the scheduled Brexit date to promote unity and to pray for the country and its future.

Religious education figures MORE than eight out of 10 students in Extremadura choose to study religious education, according to new figures. The subject, which is optional in some Spanish schools, is taught to 77.6 per cent of primary schoolchildren in Castilla y Leon, while 81.6 per cent of pupils in Cataluña do not study the topic. Secondary school age children studied religion less, at 77 per cent in Extremadura and 70 per cent in Castilla y Leon. In Cataluña 89.9 per cent of pupils this age opted not to learn about the subject. According to the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, data from the year 2016 to 2017 showed overall 64.5 per cent of Spain’s primary schoolchildren received Catholic education, 34.5 per cent did not learn about religion at all, and 0.9 per cent learnt about a different religion.

POLLUTION PLAN: Officials want to cut the number of cars on Barcelona’s roads.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: The majority of children do not learn the subject in Cataluña.

VEHICLES that produce the most emissions could be banned from parts of Barcelona from 2020 under new council plans. Council officials are planning to create a low-emissions zone that would cover 95 square kilometres, almost the entire city and four neighbouring towns. Estimates from Barcelona City Council forecast that about 50,000 vehicles would be taken off the city’s roads under the plan, around 7 per cent of the current total. Barcelona mayor Ada Colau said pollution was probably the biggest problem facing the

city. Officials are planning to create a system where drivers would have to apply for a sticker to enter the low-emissions zone. These would be issued by Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) that would assess vehicles on their emissions, denying passes to the worst polluters. The plans follow the introduction of a similar scheme in Madrid in November. Carbon dioxide emissions have fallen by 14.2 per cent since it was launched, according to a study from the capital’s Technical University.

Plastic recycling progress THE amount of plastic waste recycled in Spain has now surpassed the amount sent to landfill sites, according to a new report. The pro-recycling Cicloplast group and National As-

sociation of Plastic Recyclers (ANARPLA) found 41 per cent, more than 1 million tons, of all plastic waste thrown away in 2017 was recycled. About 39 per cent went to landfill sites and 20 per cent

was used for energy recovery out of a total of 2.4 million tons of waste. Cicloplast said Spain was now on target to surpass EU plastic recycling targets of 50 per cent by 2025 and 55 per cent by 2030.

Temperatures cool SPAIN’S unseasonably high spring has taken a dip as temperatures fell by 14 degrees in one day in some areas. In Alcoi, Alicante, the thermostat plummeted to 8.4 degrees on Monday, compared to 22.6 the day before. The State Meteoro-

logical Agency (AEMET) said rain was expected in eastern Cantabria and the Pyrenees before making its way further south. The Balearics and eastern Andalucia are expected to be cloudy and wet, while the Pyrenees are anticipating snow.

Atlantic snow A SPANISH journalist has published a book on how cocaine came to Europe via the Atlantic. The book, Snow on the Atlantic, shows how Galicia in north west Spain has always been an entrance point for cargo, attracting smugglers

throughout the centuries. Nacho Carretero reveals how the region began to attract a thriving illegal market in hashish and cocaine, using its geographical location to become like Mexico for importing drugs to a continent. The writer said: “It be-

came normal to think and talk about evading the authorities, to respect… a capo who had nothing to do with lawful state agencies, and to earn fast money… It was more or less the norm to break the law. It was just the way things were.”

DEMOCRACY THREAT: Spain’s government is concerned about false information online.

By Tara Rippin SPAIN’S National Security Department is said to be creating a special unit to identify false information and cyber threats ahead of the country’s elections in April and May. According to Spanish media, the department is concerned about the potential for a campaign of ‘fake news’ from Russia’s intelligence services ahead of the Spanish general election on April 28, and the local,

regional and European elections on May 26. The National Encryption Centre is reportedly working with the government to monitor the internet and help collect and process data before removing false information. According to a Eurobarometer study, 80 per cent of Spaniards are concerned about the threat of fake news and its potential to harm democracy.

A SPANISH family have left their Madrid home and embarked on a six-year journey around the world in a camper van. Having travelled regularly as a couple, Marta Bruyel, 38, and Daniel Gimeno, 42, decided to pack up belongings and their three small children, aged between one and six, and hit the road. According to Spanish press, they left every-

thing behind in December to spend two years touring the Americas, before a further two years travelling through Asia. The family then plan to move on to Africa for the remainder of the world tour in their eight square metre camper. The eldest two children are home schooled by Marta while Daniel looks after the youngest. The parents said they ‘value the education which isn’t found in textbooks, such as communication skills and lessons learned while travelling.’

All this is due to the enormous police pressure to which I am being subjected, which in recent times has become unbearable, preventing me from leading a normal life.’ He added that his family was harassed and his emotional stability had seriously deteriorated and that he needs medical help. Tourism spend call SPAIN needs to double the resources it puts into tourism if it wants to keep the sector growing in the face of a slowdown from the major markets like the UK and Germany. This is the message sent by major industry figure Gabriel Escarrer, president of the Exceltur pressure group and CEO of Melia hotels. He warned that investment has been stagnant for years at 0.25 per cent of GDP, when the sector provides more than 10 per cent of national wealth. That is why Exeltur has asked for more political and economic attention. While the sector was showing annual growth of up to 5 per cent in recent years, that figure dropped to 2 per cent in 2018, with this year forecast to see a rise of 1.7 per cent.

EWN Facebook page soars past 30,000 fans THE Euro Weekly News’ Facebook page has climbed past 30,000 ‘likes’ this week as the EWN in print, online and social media continues to enjoy rapid growth in 2019. The EWN team work around the clock, seven days a week to ensure that our fast-growing social media community is provided with the latest, most accurate news from an English-language news site in Spain. While other sites may engage in sensationalist headlines to gain clicks our readers prefer us to deliver the news as it is. And that’s just one of the reasons why advertisers choose our print and online packages to reach out to customers with maximum reach for their budget. In the past year alone our Facebook likes have grown by a massive 6,000 new fans and now we have new targets in our sights.

We generally post more than twice as many news updates to our Facebook page as other smaller newspapers and with double the engagement rate. And we have almost double the number of followers as a fortnightly publication based on the Costa del Sol. One smaller paper still claims it is Spain‘s number one expat newspaper and ‘second in the world,’ but their claim is from 2016 and involved just a small sample of people that were polled by a UK marketing group - and the awards have not been run since. On our website and our Facebook page we encourage readers to enter into the debate on hot topics and engage and comment on our posts with the best of them also appearing in print every week. Unusually in the English-language news publishing sphere in Spain we allow our readers to review our Face-

book page and we’re proud to enjoy a rating of 4.6 out of 5 - based on the opinion of 401 people. Ask yourself why other titles that claim to rival the EWN do not allow reviews on their page. What could they be hiding? Instead some publications refuse to show a rating, and instead rely on dubious stats from tools like Alexa. To quote influential social media blogger Shane Barker: “You’ll also find that Alexa rankings aren’t too important for these reasons: • Alexa only takes into account data received from users of their toolbar, so the results may be quite relative. Not everyone has the toolbar installed. There are millions of websites that may never receive a good rank despite having a lot of traffic. • As previously mentioned, Alexa can be manipulated. Online traffic da-

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard ELECTIONS in Spain continue to approach as parties not only vie for seats at a national and European level but also compete for control of local and regional authorities. Local and regional elections are due to take place in Spain on Sunday May 26, the same day as European elections. On a regional level Spain’s political parties are seeking to win seats in 12 out of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities. Voters will not go to the polls in Andalucia, the Basque Country, Cataluña or Galicia due to elections having being held in those regions less than four years ago. The Valencia Region’s electorate are due to be balloted on Sunday April 28, the same day as the national poll. Voters will be asked to send representatives to the regional assemblies of the 12 autonomous communities holding elections. Those authorities have

Spain’s ruling political party at a national level, the leftleaning Partido Socialista (PSOE), is defending five of the regional authorities up for election. The conservative Partido

Popular (PP) is defending four, with the remaining three in the Canary Islands, Cantabria and Navarra held by regional parties. The PP will be looking to replicate its success in Andalucia in December. That election saw it unseat PSOE for the first time in Andalucia in Spain’s democratic history after striking a pact with the

centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox. Locally, all of Spain’s councils and its 38 provincial deputations will be voted on. Town and city councils manage local services including refuse collection, street lighting and small-scale public works projects including street renovations. Smaller political parties including single-issue or regionally-specific groups tend to do better at a local level where the duopoly of PSOE and PP is not as strong. Provincial deputations sit between local councils and regional authorities and are tasked with managing some public services such as transport and working to support economic activity. There are no provincial deputations in Asturias, the Madrid Region, Murcia and La Rioja due to those regions having only one province.

Profile: PP WITH a general election looming on Sunday April 28, we are profiling each of the political parties vying for victory in the vote. The conservative Partido Popular (PP) is one of Spain’s two dominant political parties. It is currently the official opposition to the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) in the Cortes. The party was created following the rebranding of its predecessor, the Alianza Popular (AP) in 1989. The AP itself was founded by former ministers from dictator Francisco Franco’s regime in an effort to maintain his core agenda of defending traditional, Catholic Spain. The party has since undertaken a long march towards the centre-right, absorbing smaller Christian and liberal parties. Its platform is now broadly pro-business while also continuing to claim the mantle of the defenders of traditional Spanish values on the family, faith and other social issues. Current party leader Pablo Casado was elected in July. His victory was seen as a swing to the right for the party and he has pledged to curb immigration and restrict abortion for women if the PP takes power. Poll tracker: Partido Socialista (PSOE): 27.3 per cent, 115 seats Partido Popular (PP): 20.7 per cent, 84 seats Ciudadanos: 15.4 per cent, 55 seats Vox: 12.5 per cent, 35 seats Result: PSOE largest party, no overall control.

Ancient evidence of migration

HOUSE FIRES: A new report revealed the most and least expensive areas for fire damage.

Fire damage costs revealed AN insurance group has released figures revealing the average damage costs of fires throughout Spain. The Insurance Business Association (UNESPA) revealed Salamanca’s fires cost the least, at €499 for an average household blaze; 71 per cent lower than the national average. The report showed insurance payouts for fires in Las Rozas, Madrid reached €11,684,

as well as €7,074 in Alcala de Guadaira, Sevilla. Damage from house fires in Barcelona was slightly less expensive to fix, at €4,930 in Manresa. The cheapest areas were Valladolid at an average of €692 and San Sebastian de los Reyes, Madrid, at €714. In total, insurers spend around €525 million each year repairing fire damage.

NATO: Spain lags on defence spending SPAIN is among the NATO members which spends the least on defence as a proportion of economic output (GDP), according to estimates from the organisation. NATO found Spain spent the equivalent of 0.93 per cent on their defence budgets in 2018. Belgium spent the same proportion, and both countries came ahead of Montenegro which recently joined the alliance. The US spent the

equivalent of 3.39 per cent of its GDP while Britain, Poland, Latvia, Greece and Estonia spent around 1.5 per cent. It comes as NATO’s European members agreed to raise defence spending to 2 per cent of GDP by 2024. The pledge came in response to calls from the Trump administration in the US for other NATO members to shoulder more of the burden for funding NATO’s collective military capabilities.

SCIENISTS studying DNA from Bronze Age burial sites in the Pyrenees have found migration from Central Europe changed the genes of those living in Spain at the time. The research, published in Science journal, saw migrants cross the mountain range over a period of 400 years, existing the genetic profile of the male inhabitants there before. Researchers said they are unsure whether the change was due to violence, but found DNA showed migration from as far away as Russia to Spain. The study is the most extensive of its kind, tracing more than 8,000 years of history across Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and Gibraltar.

A SEA turtle which was nursed back to good health at Palma Aquarium before being released has reappeared after months without emitting any signal from an electronic device placed inside its shell. Named Lasi, the turtle was discovered by a fisherman in the waters of Cabrera last March. It was having difficulty submerging and was soon transferred to the Marine Fauna Recovery Centre of the Palma Aquarium. After a few days at the centre Lasi was released on the beach of s’Armarador, Santanyi, on March 26 last year, with a device which offers real-time immersion position and depth data through a connection via satellite. Signals were received until November, and then there was nothing until February 21, when the female turtle was recorded between Cabrera and the Algerian coast. Between March 26, 2018 and February 12, Lasi travelled 9,066 km, an average of 35.2 km per day.

High cost of subsidy changes THE then Spanish government’s decision to arbitrarily and retrospect i v e l y c h a n g e r e n e w a b l e e n e rg y subsidy regulations is getting more and more expensive. In a bid to tackle a mounting bill for subsidies generous allowances were slashed, almost crippling the industry overnight. This led to many companies pulling out of the sector - and plenty of them are demanding compensation for money spent on abandoned projects. Now US company Nextera Energy has won a case at Ciadi - the

By Dilip Kuner World Bank’s arbitration court - and is claiming €291 million in compensation from the Spanish government. The company had investments in two solar thermal plants in Extremadura with a capacity of 49.9 megawatts, where it had planned to invest more than €600 million. But the changes to already agreed subsidies made the schemes unprofitable so the group closed its subsidiary in Spain at a cost of €263 million.

The court decided that the government ‘failed to give fair and equitable treatment in the protection of business expectations to obtain a return on investment and development of plants.’ This is just one case that has been heard, with Spain facing another 31 arbitration actions. It recently lost a case brought by RREEF Infrastructure, with a compensation award being calculated at the moment. So far five cases have gone against the country, which has refused to pay. Instead it is seeking to have the cases annulled.

Well paid CUTS: VW plant in Spain. GERMAN car giant Volkswagen, which has major factories in Spain, has announced it is to cut between 5,000 and 7,000 jobs to help fund a move to electric cars. VW brand’s chief operating officer Ralf Brandstaetter said the positions would go by 2023 as it chases cost savings. The plan is to cut staff by not replacing those who re-

tire over the period. Chief financial officer Arno Antlitz said. That the plan would help “finance our investments and satisfy our objectives for the electric era.” Across the whole group, Volkswagen will invest €44 billion into ‘future mobility’ such as electric cars and automatic driving in the next five years.

According to the company Spain will be the sixth most affected European country, with Cataluña and Valencia the most affected regions in the country, reported El Mundo Spanish newspaper.

The international consultancy firm based its calculations on damage to exports. In Europe Germany is the most affected country with an annual downturn in trade of €9.4 billion. It is followed by the Netherlands (€ 4.4 billion), Belgium and France (€ 3.9 billion each), with Italy slightly ahead of Spain at €2.6 billion.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT DID you honestly think that this bunch of privileged ‘Club Westminster’ layabouts actually cared about what you thought? Ha! The only thing this disgraceful array of arrogant Parliamentarians truly hold dear is who you vote for - not what. If this lot had existed in the days of Cromwell, most of them would by now either be in the Tower or having their necks stretched in the market square. I actually lost respect for our esteemed politicians many years ago, on discovering that people we all blindly placed on pedestals - should actually be standing in the dock! When I was young and fancy free, and doing the Chelsea and Kensington ‘rounds,’ the only parties that most of them cared about were those that catered for everything below the waistline. At one such soiree I clearly recall one of the honourable members coming up to me, sweating profusely from his ingestion of ‘uppers,’ clad in nothing but a string vest and begging me to take over his latest bedtime ‘romp,’ as he ‘couldn’t carry on any longer.’ The next day he was representing his London constituency at Prime Ministers questions! Even if those days of 60’s debauchery are now behind them, I have no delusions about our so-called government representatives. The only thing most of them represent is them-

HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT: The Palace of Westminster. selves. Power and feathering their own nests are all they really care about, and remaining in the EU is their best way of achieving it. They also can’t bear to think of their fellow cronies in the European old boys club continuing without them. These Westminster wasters are also extremely reticent to take on the challenges of the

worldwide markets. Something that would take them out of the comfort zones of Westminster clubland, get them off their Saville row and Gucci clad behinds and, heaven forbid, do some actual work. Blinded by their own arrogance, they also of course fail to realise that come the next elections, when they are all sidling around, begging

for your votes and pretending they are going to represent your interest, this recent utter betrayal and undisputable revelation of their true colours, will (hopefully) not be forgotten! Look out for a whole new party emerging out of the present chaos. But don’t hold yer breath. ‘New Labour’ was meant to be a whole fresh start, and look where they got us!’ I’m also extremely wary of the Lisbon treaty, a positively horrendous agreement to which all EU members, including the UK are already committed. Google it. It makes extremely disquieting reading, and its lurking just around yet another shadowy political corner. Good luck all. As a final word and in light of the recent horrendous massacre in New Zealand. Would it not have been a better idea for London mayor Khan to have deployed more police outside the churches for fear of reprisal - instead of the hundreds he immediately called up to guard the Mosques? And where did all those police suddenly appear from? I thought there was a glut of knife crimes because the police were sorely depleted. Just asking. Behind THE MUSIC V L James | vljcomms@gmail.com | Facebook: @vljamesinfo I’M not sure if it’s because there are not many great new albums around at the moment or if it is because there is a real appetite for nostalgia, but Coventry’s original Two Tone sensations have hit the No 1 spot in the album charts again… nearly 40 years after they last hit the No 1 spot with their brilliant album Encore. Since the band’s reunion tour in 2009 (the 30th anniversary of Too Much Too Young hitting No 1), fans old and new have been entertained by regular tours. Being the band they are, they were never going to record again unless they thought they had something to say, something relevant to what’s going on today. Well, they certainly had something to say. WE’VE all heard the phrase ‘Let them eat cake,’ coined allegedly by Marie Antoinette before the French Revolution. Well, apparently, she didn’t! Indeed, she was quite generous to charitable causes, intelligent and wouldn’t have said something so inflammatory. Which made me wonder which other sayings simply don’t stand up to scrutiny… ‘Ne’er cast a clout till May be out.’ In other words, don’t break out the barbie until Theresa May’s got her deal? This May, next May, May 2030? Murphy’s Law (‘if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong and at the worst possible moment’) is also way off the mark. For instance, ripping off a shirt button or breaking a shoelace when in a rush is probably down to the extra stress you’re under. Likewise: ‘Healthy as a horse.’

Myths, rumours and some very tall tales Any horse owner will tell you that a horse is like an Italian sports car. If it can break down, it will. ‘Lightning never strikes in the same place twice.’ Rubbish! Lightning strikes repeatedly wherever the surface offers points of conductivity - and where the conditions produce lots of thunderstorms. ‘Cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis.’ Most medical studies have found no link whatsoever between this annoying habit and arthritis. The cracking sound isn’t bones being mangled out of

shape, but the release of pockets of gas from between joints. However, long periods of knuckle-cracking may contribute to lesser grip strength. So best pack it in! Basically, these sayings are straight out of the ‘I saw you coming’ school of coffee table books and not meant to be taken literally. A bit like those nightmares in which you’re about to sit an exam but can’t because you’re astride a horse naked except for wellies... Or you’re about to plunge over a cliff edge into an abyss. Help! Are we back to ‘Ne’er cast a clout till (Theresa) May IS out’? LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he change the system? Two years ago, I purchased an apartment in Mallorca. I have now discovered that my small single bedroom apartment is being charged community fees at the same amount as a large three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. I have checked my deeds and they clearly say I pay community fees per square metre. The administrator tells me that all apartments must pay equal community fees whether they are one-bedroom or a four-bedroom penthouse. He says that, in order to change this, all owners must unanimously agree. This cannot be right. My title deed says my community fee is based on my square metres. I have ceased payments in protest. E W (Baleares)

Standardly, community fees are David Searl charged according to the You and the Law size of the flat, just as it in Spain says in your title deed. A very few communities have voted to charge all units the same and this is legal, as your administrator says. However, the system is clearly unfair to you. One owner who feels his interests are harmed can go to court and ask the judge to order the system changed. The stoppage of payment will not help. E.W. Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene

THE central portion of the Partido Popular is cheesed off with Pablo Casado’s decision to lurch further to the Right to entice back defectors who have listened to Vox’s siren song. The central portion of Ciudadanos - theoretically most of the party - is cheesed off with Albert Rivera’s lurch to the Right and his acceptance of Vox in Andalucia while vetoing the PSOE. And the PSOE? The PSOE needs to woo everyone and not only the diehards who have always voted PSOE regardless. Above all it needs to woo back the PSOE’s once-considerable support from the Centre. Pedro Sanchez, the Moncloa’s current tenant, is more beloved by the card-carrying militants who twice gave him the primaries than the territorial barons who gave him the bird. But the Centre - the PSOE’s and everyone else’s - is there for Sanchez to mop up and it is the Centre, especially the undecided Centre, that decides elections. Theirs are the votes that all parties need and Casado and Rivera ignore them at their peril because they will push them into Sanchez’s arms.

Black joke THE irony of it! Not long ago, Spain was proclaimed as the healthiest country in the

Centring on the Centre Yes me no yesses THE PDeCat’s (Catalan independence party) National Committee recently met to decide its election strategy. This entails making life as difficult as possible for everyone concerned, including those in their own party who want nonconflictive independence and some kind of understanding with the other parties. Its list of candidates for the General Election on April 28 underline Carles Puigdemont’s rejection of dialogue and his decision to go all out for conflict. As someone once said of GW Bush in the run-up to the Iraq invasion, he’s not going to take yes for an answer.

world, thanks mainly to virgin extra olive oil and its 85.8 year average life expectancy, according to a Forbes.com online report.

Then an OECD survey goes and finds that only 6.4 per cent of the Spanish are happy with their lives, compared with the Finns who top the list.

Spain is credited as the cradle of black humour and what else could you expect in a country where the population is condemned to live longer than everyone else and be bloody miserable at the same time.

CUP runneth out ANTI-SYSTEM party CUP announced that it will not present candidates in next month’s election. This is not a priority CUP, said party spokeswoman Mireia Boya: “The necessary conditions do not exist to present a groundbreaking and transforming candidature in Madrid.” It’s tempting to respond with ‘Chicken!’ because CUP held PDeCat to ransom when its votes were needed to install Artur Mas as regional president in 2016. Mas’s head its price and PDeCat could come up with no-one better than Girona’s mayor, Carles Puigdemont. CUP had as much to do with pushing the Procesas PDeCat, ERC or the pro-independence organisations Omnium and ANC. The party has a great deal to answer for, because it foisted Carles Puigdemont not only Cataluña, but the rest of Spain, too.

Brexit driven?

WE received a letter from Hacienda which we understood but couldn’t grasp what was wrong with our 2017 tax return, so we took it to our Spanish tax advisor. They are looking into it for us but as far as we are concerned all of our affairs are transparent and above the radar. The worrying thing about this is that our Advisors office has a large multi-national client base, but have 30 such letters to investigate and without exception all were received by British clients. The numbers are also unprecedented. They are aware of German, Belgian and French who use the in-house lawyer who have never submitted a tax return whether resident or non-resident. Regardless of status, no other nationality has contacted them in connection with a similar letter. The conversation made us think of the visit to our local post office to collect this letter which was one of a significant pile of identical envelopes. Our village is small and has a number of British expat residents. From the size of the envelope pile we suspect most if not all have a letter from the Hacienda waiting for them. We cannot avoid the conclusion that Brits are being targeted. Even our Advisors office has said they feel it is Brexit driven. It would be interesting to know just how many Brits are affected. Please withhold my name if printed. Name supplied

Driver warning I JUST wanted to warn you of the latest scam aimed at drivers, especially if female and driving alone. An elderly friend was stationary and just about to pull out onto Mijas road. A car came along, stopped and one of its three occupants got out and pointed to her front tyre. She got out to look and very quickly another man took her handbag from her car. She was very shocked. It was a white car with three occupants. Please take care and stop for nobody. Name supplied

Drought doubt I READ with interest ‘Irrigation guarantees’ in last week’s Axarquia edition. I understand that occasional water shortages and interrupted services are to be expected when we live in a hot, arid climate, but the drought problems in La Viñuela seem to get worse every year. It was only the heavy rainfall last spring and autumn which seemed to prevent a serious problem and I very much hope the Junta de Andalucia agree to the meetings mentioned in the article to discuss solutions. Agnes Cavendish (Mrs)

OUR VIEW

Teaching a lesson THOUSANDS of school pupils in Spain, Britain and across the world walked out of their classrooms on Friday to teach adults a lesson about our planet. The students were taking part in school strikes for climate change in walkouts dubbed Fridays for Future. Their efforts were inspired by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. She is up for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for her role as fountainhead of the movement. The activists’ message is clear: why should we go to school to prepare for a future that looks likely to be seriously jeopardised by climate change caused by adults? The pupils are overwhelmingly backed by scientific evidence which has shown for years that inaction on climate change spells global catastrophe. Their questioning of whether it is worth studying for a future which will see mass extinctions, catastrophic weather and rising sea levels if nothing is done is entirely reasonable. Not only is their cause sound, but the pupils are reclaiming a spirit of activism, hope and idealism that often gets smothered by adult conservatism, cynicism and apathy. This saying attributed to Native American Chief Seattle seems appropriate: ‘We do not inherit the world from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.’ As Thunberg herself said, if adults really claim to love their children more than anything why would they allow their tomorrow to be destroyed for today’s corporate greed?

Now we want to hear your views.

Bloody fight breaks out on Ryanair flight Ryanair have such a fast turnaround for their aircraft that the gate staff cannot possibly check passengers to see if they are fit to fly or if they have had too much alcohol. It’s time the CAA stepped in to penalise airlines who allow drunken passengers to board aircraft. John McLean I wonder if any alcohol was involved?

Angus It is time airlines formed up and banned these idiots from all flights - everywhere - forever. PM Funny. The only issue we have had in North America with alcohol and planes was a British passenger last year. Don’t think it is the alcohol that is the problem. Rhea Rouw Horrendous, the airlines are suffering from their greed of money, when will they realise that alcohol and flying don’t go together? No wonder our countrymen have such a bad name abroad, bet Europe will be glad to get rid of us. Gill Reynolds

ANIMAL CRUELTY CLAIMS: Mijas council and donkey owners to meet They say things will change and nothing ever does. The mafia that control the donkeys make too much money as it is now, why should they change and pay out to improve the

COMMENTS FROM EWN ONLINE conditions of their animals? The hooves were supposed to be checked by a vet periodically, but the state of their hooves means probably the vet hasn’t been paid for the last visits and has stopped coming. I have lived outside the village for 15 years and other than a shaded area nothing has changed and I’m ashamed to say it, nothing will. People stop riding the donkeys and horses, stop paying money because you are the ones that can stop this cruelty, not us who live here because they don’t want to listen to us and even intimidate people that protest. ONLY YOU CAN STOP THE ABUSE! Julie Packwood We last visited Mijas several years ago and have not returned after we were so shocked and upset at the disgusting treatment of the poor donkeys. Having read some months ago action was at last being taken to improve their lot, we booked a holiday near Mijas Pueblo for July this year. Please, please keep the pressure up to help these poor animals. Ideally, the whole wretched business would stop, but we realise that people’s livelihoods are at stake, so at least persuade the owners to show some compassion and treat their donkeys in a responsible way. As for the tourists, they must bear some responsibility; there is absolutely no need to use donkeys to see the beautiful village, maybe they could be kept just for a novelty ride for small children. This being a family oriented week, much of it may be spent getting together with relatives and going over old times. Perhaps you are compiling a photo album for older members of the family or vice versa.

At the first modern Olympics, winners were awarded silver medals. Currently, the gold medals are 93 per cent silver and 6 per cent copper, leaving 1 per cent for the highly prized gold finish.

An exciting invitation may set tongues wagging and make a loved one jealous. You, meanwhile, are quite bemused by the whole thing. What comes out of this week is that you are of considerable value to others. The mere thought of you not being around sends ripples through your social circle.

Be aware that not everyone is willing to work as hard as you. When approached by someone wanting you to trust them, be sure of their motives. Do what you feel is right but remain firmly in control, especially financially. It may not be the time to make a particular move, although others think that it is. There's no problem with discussing things and talking them through. Keep up your healthy habits because you need lots of energy, especially at the weekend.

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Social demands are made, but

EL MILLON: PTK34932

JOKER: 4 371 453

try to shuffle them to the weekend. Be diplomatic or someone close could become irritated. Keep an eye on the small print because something fundamental may have changed in a long-standing arrangement. Suddenly, at the weekend, you are thrust into the limelight.

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) Be aware that leopards do not change their spots, they merely hide them. Those who demand your trust need a cool checking out and don't be afraid to say 'no' as and when necessary. Finances are well aspected this week with a new idea proving both worthwhile in terms of your time and profitable.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Career and home are in disharmony but a bit of compromise soon sorts things out. You don't like playing the 'bad guy', but honesty is also important to you. Speaking your mind can be liberating although, initially, you may see it as a nuisance and embarrassing. A meeting at the weekend is both confusing and disarming.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Someone with a larger-than-life imagination makes you smile but that was not their intention. Try to be diplomatic and steer them in a different direction. Some feelings of loneliness will not be assuaged by working more. Perhaps it is time to consider taking on a pet or giving a current pet more attention.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Sometimes, you find it hard to do things just for the pure enjoyment of it. Realise that not everything has to have a purpose or a profit. Look round this week and seek out something that will please your senses and bring a smile to your lips. Make this a week when you live for the moment and give full rein to your imagination.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Contact with a less than ideal situation makes you realise just how lucky you are. It has been clear that the weeks are changeable and your situation at the moment far from settled. Pity those whose day-to-day life is completely predictable. As someone who values an element of challenge, it is enjoyable to know that unexpected times are ahead.

Know your numbers

By Sally Underwood WE all know we should keep a frequent eye on our health, whether it is to monitor existing conditions or ward against potential problems. Among the most frequently-heard health advice we may have come across the phrase, ‘know your numbers.’ This motto is often used to refer to cholesterol or blood sugar figures, but there are in fact a series of numbers it is helpful to keep a check on. Many Spanish pharmacies offer quick and cheap tests, often with results while you wait. So which are some of the most common tests and what can they tell us? First up is cholesterol, which can lead to heart attack or stroke if too much of the ‘bad’ type accrues in the body. There are two types of this waxy substance; low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL).

PHARMACY TESTS: Many Spanish pharmacies offer tests to keep an eye on overall health. LDLs are considered bad as they can collect in the arteries, eventually causing blockages, whereas HDL can actually carry cholesterol away from the body to be processed in the

liver. The British Heart Foundation recommends a combined total of four millimoles per litre of blood or less for those at high risk of some diseases.

Next is glycated haemoglobin, w hic h in di cat es aver age bl ood s uga r level f or t he l ast t wo or three months and can help indicate pre-diabetes, as well as types I and

II diabetes. Also important in indicating risk of fatty liver disease and pancreatitis is knowing your triglyceride levels. These chemicals are a type of fat found in the blood and can raise risk of coronary heart disease, particularly in women. For men, a PSA test can indicate healthy prostate function. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and non-cancerous tissue in the prostate and testing its levels can help with early detection of any issues such as an enlarged or inflamed prostate and prostate cancer. For men and women, monitor your kidneys with uric acid and creatinine tests, both of which can help give an insight into how well they are functioning. Finally, keep a frequent eye on blood pressure using a home machine or one in a pharmacy or doctor ’s surgery to make sure levels stay within a healthy range.

Hay fever help THE warmer weather might feel great, but the sudden increase in flower growth and pollen levels can make life tough for those who suffer from hay fever. This condition which can be caused by various allergens, including pollen, can result in a runny nose, watering eyes, coughing, and itching. Alongside over the counter or prescription medications there are also a few things you can do yourself to help lessen symptoms. One simple and cheap tip is to use a small amount of Vaseline - or any other non-irritating but sticky balm- around the nostrils and (very carefully) under the eyes to trap pollen before it reaches you. Some people also recommend using a small amount of beeswax in the same way. Similarly, try to wear sunglasses as much as possible while outdoors to prevent pollen reaching the eyes, and keep hair off the face as the pollen that accumulates in it can make its way to your nose and mouth. Finally, once back indoors, jump in the shower and change clothes to avoid bringing more pollen in with you.

Turn up the volume BOTH men and women can at some point suffer from hair that looks and feels limp or flat. Often, the more we try to remedy the situation with shampoos, conditioners and other products, the more we end up weighing our hair down even more, quashing any volume we did have. Luckily in most cases loss of hair volume can be resolved quickly and simply, beginning by clearing any product build up from the hair. Use a gentle clarifying shampoo to get rid of anything flattening hair and dulling its natural shine. Phyto’s Clarifying Detox Shampoo (currently €12.60 for 125ml, www.mirafarma.es) promises to purify hair without stripping it, creating a blank canvas for subsequent products. Next, choose a hydrating but light conditioner and serum and concentrate both through

the mid-lengths and ends, not near the roots. Once hair is dry, use a volumising texture spray such as IGK’s Beach Club (€16.55 for 60ml, www.sepho ra.es), which promises to add overall volume. Spray it in sections for a subtle lift, or for full on volume upturn hair and spray it throughout. To create subtle beach waves and help hair appear instantly fuller, separate hair into sections before twisting and spraying. For shorter hair styles or for men’s hair, try a texturising pomade such as R+CO’s Dart Pomade Stick (£18/€21.12 for 14g, www.cult beauty.co.uk) to help sculpt hair. Finally, tame any frizz without reducing volume by warming a lightweight product such as natural brand Rahua’s Smoothing Hair Balm (€30 for 17g, www.rahua.eu) between hands and gently running over lengths.

I’m not talking fasting for a week but with lent in full swing, why not try a 24-hour fast? This is basically having an evening meal and not eating until your evening meal the next day. The beauty of this is that for a huge chunk of the fast, you are asleep! This is where the term ‘breakfast’ comes from. TECH FOR THE TIMID IT used to be said you were nobody if you didn’t have your own internet site. Now you haven’t made it if you don’t have a blog. Guilty as charged, m’lud. Though in fairness the typical blogger is considerably shorter in the tooth than this writer, has been known to back over a cliff when taking a selfie for a blogpost, and constantly posts pictures of today’s latest meal, perish the thought. Yet here’s the 2019 revelation: there are loads of bloggers out there earning a comfy €20,000 or more for every musing they post. That it’s a brave new world which the older among us don’t quite get, is illustrated by a simple statistic: the world’s leading bloggers earn more, infinitely more, than the world’s leading CEOs. How did that happen, and were we looking elsewhere when it did? For the less tech-savvy, ‘blog’ is a contraction of ‘web-log’: a regularly updated website or web

Mind-boggling blogging Following the money - but Terence Kennedy isn’t there (yet)…

generated by the most popular of them can now be breathtaking. A year or so ago the Huffington Post blog was pulling in more than €12 million a month, TechCrunch €2.5 million and poor old Perez Hilton a mere €500,000. At the bottom of the scale, Englishman Gerard Fletcher blogged regularly in mindnumbing detail about the buses on his local route. To his surprise and

page, typically one run by an individual or small group, written in an informal or conversational style. Sort of like a newspaper column, except bloggers can earn thousands per blog while this one might just buy breakfast. Blogging evolved in the 1990’s from postings on the early bulletin boards and forums. Written originally in the style of online diaries, the (advertising) income

probably everyone else’s, his blog got 500 followers. Even cats are in on the act. Internet star Grumpy Cat from Arizona has more than 13 million followers and was worth an estimated €88 million last time I looked. That’s a lot of Whiskas. Strike the right chord with your blog and you could graduate to becoming an ‘influencer’ - someone whose ‘followers’ will rush out to buy virtually any product you are paid to promote. Get 30,000 followers and agencies will pay you up to €1,000 per post to push, say, a beauty product. When TV reality star Kylie Jenner endorses cosmetics she trousers over €1 million. A week. Which all makes those of us still plugging away doggedly in print simply wonder if, like the sweet young thing who said sex was a pain in the neck, the response is: ‘You’re doing it wrong.’

FEATURE

It’s a blog’s life WHY wouldn’t you start your own blog? The barriers are easier than getting into print: none. All you need is a computer, free software and something to say. Though that’s optional, judging by the vacuous quality of so many blogs out there. WordPress is by far the world’s most-used and free website creation tool, with nearly 100-million users, but Blogger and semi-social-network Tumblr are hugely popular. All offer free ‘hosting’ (the technical infrastructure needed to get and keep your words of wisdom online), but serious bloggers will pay for their own domains. Then just write your heart out, press Publish, and wait for the response. Or not - given that there are ‘only’ an estimated 80 million new blogs posted every month. Perhaps don’t hold your breath.

The future of our planet By David Worboys WE live in dangerous times. There are two massive challenges to the future of our planet; the preservation of the environment, and the survival of humanity. The self-inflicted damage perpetrated by Earth’s inhabitants has never reached this level before. Most disasters are man-made. These include war, subjugation, deprivation and persecution, to which we must now add cyber warfare, terrorism, and... the future of procreation. Likewise, many natural disasters are the result of human negligence, resulting in climate change. The question is which will come first? Will it be the destruction of our planet or of humanity itself? The ultimate long-term danger could be the extinction of our species through confusion over sex. Today, every species can be identified as either male or female; with the sole exception of humans.

FUTURE: Ever-changing planet. Since I was in my teens, there have been a number of significant and welcome reforms in attitudes towards sex and ‘minorities.’ From the 50’s to the present, fundamental changes in attitudes include the Wolfenden Report, Germaine Greer, the use of ‘Ms’ (for Miss/Mrs), Elton John and now transgender. Since the 60’s, millions of men, young and middle-aged, have be-

come more feminine and women more masculine in mannerisms, activity and appearance. Until recently such men were content to wear women’s style of clothing, jewellery, make-up and hairstyles, while many women started adopting men’s hats and suits and ‘short back and sides’ haircuts. They have now started to experiment with their minds and bodies.

The result is an ever-increasing number of humans whose sex is uncertain. Will the sexes be largely indistinguishable in 100 years from now? It is widely reported that young people are less interested in sex than their parents were, before the revolution in mobile gadgetry and the obsession with social media. It may seem far-fetched to imagine our planet populated by humans

whose gender is unclear. In 2019 almost every human is clearly male or female. However, changes can accelerate once they gain momentum, and in 100 years a fundamentally different way of life can evolve. Only a few years ago people in the western world mocked concepts such as yoga, veganism, spiritual awareness and self-healing. Thirty years ago, the ideas of smartphones, robots, driverless cars or a man and his husband as parents of children were inconceivable. One hundred years ago in 1919, intensive farming was unheard of, and the fastest means of human travel was on horseback at less than 50km/hr. Just 50 years later, the crew of Apollo 11 travelled at about 40,000km/hr to the moon, and billions of animals are subjected to unimaginable cruelty. Such radical changes can occur within 100 years. Surely then, it is not mere fantasy that the planet’s population will by the year 2119, be divided into more than one gender.

A FAMILY TREAT: Can be cooked over a fire or under the grill.

Malai Chicken Kebabs WHETHER you are planning on cooking over a fire, or decide to use the grill, these mild flavoured kebabs are a treat for all the family and certainly go down well here at Olive Tree Farm. The chicken is best left for a few hours or even overnight in the marinade if you can, so the flavours develop. It is a north west Indian dish and the word for Malai means cream, although I tend to use yoghurt which works perfectly. Use the finest grater for the ginger and garlic. Serves 4-6. Ingredients 500g chicken breast cut into 3cm chunks Salt and black pepper 8 bamboo skewers (soak in cool water to stop them burning) 1 red pepper 1 yellow pepper 2 tablespoons melted butter For the Marinade 150 ml of thick cream (I use Greek yoghurt) 3 cardamom pods (split and lightly crush the seeds) 2-3 cm of fresh ginger grated 2 large garlic cloves - grated 1 tsp garam masala powder

OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

1 tsp ground cumin A half a teaspoon turmeric powder 2 mild green chillies - Remove seeds and chop finely Method Put all the marinade ingredients in a bowl along with a sprinkle of salt and a few twists of black pepper and mix through. Drop the cubed chicken into a freezer bag, add the marinade to the bag and remove as much air as you can from the bag before sealing. Give it a good squeeze around to make sure the chicken is all properly coated and leave to stand in the fridge until you are ready. Remove the seeds from the red and yellow peppers and cut into cubes, into similar sizes as the chicken. Thread the marinated chicken, and

red and yellow peppers onto the soaked skewers, alternating as you go along. If you are cooking under the grill, lightly oil a baking sheet and place the skewers on it. Grill for around 10 minutes, basting with the melted butter and turning them so all sides are slightly coloured and the chicken is cooked through. If you are cooking over a fire, make sure the fire has burned down, so you don’t end up with burnt chicken on the outside and raw in the middle, keep your eye on them and turn and baste with the butter until cooked, which should take about 8 minutes. I served them with rice, but, are nice served on a bed of lettuce along with a yoghurt raita and some fresh bread as a light lunch.

SIMNEL CAKE: Which is commonly decorated with 11 marzipan balls.

Mothering Celebrating all mums Sunday tradition

MOTHER’S DAY is celebrated in many countries round the world, but not all on the same day. In many parts of Europe M o t h e r ’s D a y i s i n M a y : the special day for Spanish mothers is the first Sunday in the month, while for mothers in countries including Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy and t h e N e t h e r l a n d s i t ’s t h e second Sunday in May. But i n t h e UK a n d Ireland, M o t h e r ’s Da y, als o known as Mothering Sunday, falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday, and so usually in the second half of March or early April. Modern British and Irish M o t h e r ’s D a y p r o b a b l y

means pampering mums a little bit: making them breakfast in bed, taking t h e m o u t f o r d i n n e r, a n d buying them a little something special. Children proudly present their mums with cards they’ve made for them at school and do their best to last the whole day on their best behaviour. T h e o r i g i n s o f M o t h e ring Sunday are more religion-related, and are commonly believed to date back to Medieval times when poor families had to pack children as young as 10 off to work. The youngsters were given one day off to go home and worship at the church in which they were

baptised, or their ‘Mother Church.’ The ‘going-amothering’ tradition meant they could also visit their families, taking their mothers flowers they picked on their way home and a special Simnel cake. Move on several centuries, when many people worked in service in the homes of the wealthy or as apprentices, and the focus of the day shifted from honouring Mother Church to honouring actual mums. Servants got a rare chance to go back to the towns and villages where they grew up and spend time with their loved ones. They would often take their mothers a gift of food and perhaps an item

of hand-me-down clothing from their employers. Curiously, by the early 20th century Mothering Sunday had become somewhat of a non-event. Vica r ’s d a u g h t e r C o n s t a n c e Penswick-Smith was having none of it and made it a personal mission to save t h e d a y. S h e f o u n d e d t h e Society for the Observance of Mothering Sund a y, s e t t i n g o u t h e r a i m s in her book The Revival of Mothering Sunday. Her perseverance paid o f f , a n d M o t h e r ’s D a y made a comeback, albeit with a strong focus on celebrating motherhood rather than PenswickS m i t h ’s r a t h e r m o r e r e l i gious vision of the event.

CHOCOLATE is probably the first thing we think of when it comes to Mother’s Day sweet treats, but for a real taste of Mothering Sunday tradition it should be Simnel cake. Essentially a light fruit cake, in the past a Simnel cake was baked to celebrate the reunion of families on this one particular Sunday during Lent, when Lenten vows of refraining from eating meat, sweet or rich foods were relaxed just a little. There is more than one version of the cake, but typically it is covered with a layer of marzipan or almond paste, with another layer running through the centre and baked into it. Reflecting the religious overtones of the event, the cake is commonly decorated with 11 marzipan balls to represent the disciples, except Judas. As to why it’s called a Simnel cake, a likely explanation is that it comes from the word for a fine wheat flour usually used for baking a cake.

Pause to confront doubts IN case you hadn’t noticed, we’re now in the season of Lent, the time when Christians traditionally reflect on their lives, considering what habits, passions or other influences should be dropped. This period is very much based on the time, when following his baptism, Jesus spent 40 days alone in a wild and uninhabitable area, preparing for his future ministry, when we’re told ‘the Devil came, tempting him.’ Three specific temptations are recorded, the first being that he should turn stones into bread to allay his hunger after having eaten nothing for 40 days. But in fact, as I read the Biblical account of that incident, I can’t help but think there was another, far more subtle temptation being pressed upon him, and one which we so often share: the temptation of doubt. So, Satan prefaced these temptations with ‘If you are the Son of God...,’ and I can just imagine the emphasis placed on that word ‘if.’ I’m sure there’d have been a distinct sneer there, implying ‘do you really believe that? - O come on then and

prove it!’ He used that same tactic right at the beginning when tempting Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, with ‘So God said you could eat everything in the Garden, did he?’ And he still uses that same approach today, regularly sowing seeds of doubt with words like ‘You don’t really believe all that rubbish about God, do you?’ or ‘If God’s so loving, then why is there so much suffering in the world?’ How often we’re all tempted to doubt God; to be made to feel that faith is stupid or irrational, and then, just as in the temptations of Jesus, we usually find that this doubt is quickly followed by a secondary attack, suggesting we look after our own interests; live for the moment and blow the consequences! But Jesus had no doubt as to his heritage, so had no need to prove himself, which is why Satan failed in all his attacks. And the same can be true for us, if we can face our doubts praying to God to confirm and strengthen our faith, then Satan’s power over us will be severely diminished.

Did you register your property purchase? THERE are many steps required to buying a property in Spain and it’s always best to ensure that you know what you are doing, buying and how to go about it. Taking each step with the help of a lawyer is always advisable, particularly if you are not fluent in Spanish and you are not familiar with the ins and outs of purchasing a property in this country. Once you have signed on the dotted line, handed over the cash and paid all the taxes and fees that need to be paid, there is still one more legality that must be attended to before you can finally put your feet up and relax in your new home. And that’s registering your purchase at your nearest property registry office. Although this action is voluntary, it is recommended to everyone who buys a property as it could save you a lot of hassle and stress in the future if you are faced with any type of problem. Doing this is a must if you want to safeguard your purchase and especially if you ever need to prove

REGISTRATION: It is important that each buyer registers his or her property purchase with the Property Registry office as soon as possible. that the house you have just bought is legally yours. Registering the purchase will act as a guarantee of protection if your name has been logged as the owner. Although signing the title deeds or ‘escritura’ will automatically name you as the new owner of the property, if you don’t register this change with the property registry

office straightaway, you could find that other charges or fees, which would rank ahead of your ownership rights, could be added against the property while it still appears on the Registro list in the name of the previous owner. In the worst-case scenario, you could end up having to sell the property you have just bought in

order to repay a debt that wasn’t yours! You will also need to register your property purchase at the Registro if you are looking to take out a mortgage. This will not be possible otherwise. It is also important to ensure that you register the purchase immediately for the following reasons: • To be considered as the only and true owner of the property • Protection against the seller’s creditors • Will be legally protected in any court case if the property’s ownership is in doubt or under discussion. For example, if two people buy the same property - unknowingly, of course, it doesn’t matter which of them purchased the property first, it is the one who registers the property first that will have priority over its ownership rights. It is also important to have your property registered in your name if you are planning to sell it in the future. Anyone that is seriously considering buying it from you

will go to the registry office specifically to check that the house is in fact in your name and that there are no outstanding debts allocated to it. If you have not registered the property, it may be a struggle to sell it. If you have purchased a property with your spouse, for example, and this figures on the title deeds but then when you go to sell it and your spouse no longer figures as one of the owners, if they have passed away, unless this has also been registered (presenting a death certificate or will is not enough, the sale of the property will then be stalled until the transfer of ownership to the living spouse (which should have already been done) has gone through. So, as you can see, registering the purchase of your new property with the correct office as soon as the sale has gone through is extremely important and a necessity that could save you a lot of legal problems and hassle. As with most legalities in Spain, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The group of friends back at school THE Almanzora Group of Friends has gone back to school again. Back in February members of the group first went t o t h e C E I P Vi rg e n d e l Saliente primary school in Albox to read to the children in English and to get them to join in English nursery songs, which they now do twice a week. In fact it has proved so popular that the Velazquez primary school in Albox also asked the group to come in and read to the children in their school, which got underway last Thursday. The members now need to expand their team. If you are interested in taking part contact the group at almanzorafriends@gmail. com or on 634 343 147 during opening hours (Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm).

Investment in healthy lifestyle THE Almeria Council President was in Maria last week to visit different works projects benefitting from provincial government funding. Accompanied by Maria mayor Francisco Martinez and Deputy Mayor Jose Antonio Alcaina, Javier A Garcia went to see how works are progressing on an outdoor fitness park. Located next to the municipal day centre, the fitness park will have a circuit of different apparatus and artificial grass, and is aimed at the elderly in particular. They then dropped in to chat to participants in a workshop for pensioners. The provincial council is backing the so-called ageing workshops for municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants initiative; the workshops include adapted yoga, theatre, painting and dance, all aimed at this age group and increasing their self-sufficiency. The provincial administration is also funding expansion of the cemetery.

Council accusations CANTORIA Council has announced it could take the provincial government to court, accusing its Development Department of delays on works in the municipality to the benefit of larger towns. A statement issued by Cantoria local authority claims that of 11 projects which should have been started in the municipality in the current four-year period, only four have been carried out, adding that they are the ones with the lowest budget. “It is clear the provincial council is not a public instrument to help the smallest towns,” the Cantoria local administration statement maintains. The mayor, Puri Sanchez, goes as far as accusing provincial Development Deputy Oscar Liria of ‘not acting impartially,’ saying what makes it worse is that he is originally from the region. Among the projects which according to Cantoria Council should have been started by

CLAIMS: Cantoria mayor Puri Sanchez accused provincial Development Deputy Oscar Liria of ‘not acting impartially.’ now, are repaving and installing lighting in Calle Estacion and works on the viewing point in Calle Alamicos. The statement goes on to say that the council has asked the municipal legal services to evaluate the situation, quoting the mayor as saying that the move is due to “The

latest information which has appeared about the way in which the provincial institution has been used to benefit a town like Roquetas de Mar, for works which multiply by five which promised in our town for a period of four years, is more than sufficient to suspect.”

Sanchez added: “That in addition all these actions have been suspended before the election period, while announcing the launch of others programmed much later, is a provocation which simply forces action, including through legal channels if necessary.”

Search on for missing man THE search is on for a 59-year-old man from Cantoria who went missing on March 7. The SOS Desaparecidos association for missing people has put out a call on Twitter to help find Jose Antonio Linares Lopez, saying he needs urgent medical attention. The post specifies that he is 1.6 metres tall, has blue eyes, straight blonde hair and is partially bald with a thin face. Jose Antonio was wearing dark blue jeans and a black jacket when he was last seen.

Double purpose playground

Church anniversary

THE new-look, colourful playground in Maria’s Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza infant and primary school has a double purpose. Not only was the aim to put a smile on the children’s faces, the playground is also now kitted out for fun recreation activities, like the traditional hopscotch and noughts and crosses. To keep children active there is also a climbing wall, with cork flooring for safety reasons.

Bid to attract tour groups PROMOTING the Almanzora Valley as an ideal location for tour groups was the main aim of the Turismo Almanzora business association’s meeting with tour operators and travel agencies last week. The day of talks was organised by the Almeria Chamber of Commerce at the Aguadulce Exhibition Palace as part of the International Promotion Plan (PIP) to internationalise the province’s small and medium-sized businesses.

COWBOYS AND IRISH: The Outlaw Posse and organiser Ellen Green get into the spirit.

Age Support fundraising success THE Age Support Almanzora Cowboy Ceilidh raised a very handsome €500, which will help fund the work of ASA volunteers in the community. A cross between a barn dance and a St Patrick’s Day traditional Irish-style get-together, with line dancing also thrown into the mix, the event held at La Parilla in Albox proved to be huge fun. The organiser Ellen Green (helped by husband Stan), had worked hard to make the room cowboy-themed, complete with hay bales and bunting, to get everyone into the spirit. Guests were welcomed by Lana Highaoffer with her tomahawk and by Les Desperado Stuart.

Calamity Lynn Murrell was a superb caller, giving directions to a number of dances. The Outlaw Posse, who provided the music, included two wonderful fiddlers: Sammie ‘Oakley’ and Jesse’s sister Jeannie ‘James.’ They were aided and abetted by Howard ‘Kelly,’ Shaun the man with no name - Faulkner, Jim ‘Fingers’ Mackie, all led by Geoff ‘the kid’ Murrell. There were games involving balloons and hobby horses in the interval, and plenty of laughs all evening. Psychic guidance offered by Jaqui was a popular addition to the event. Hannah and Louiza provided cowboy tucker and the restaurant staff were great hosts.

ALMERIA Provincial Council and Velez-Rubio local authority have come together to mark the 250th anniversary of the municipality’s Encarnacion Church, setting out an ambitious programme of events throughout the year to celebrate the milestone. Provincial Culture Deputy Antonio Jesus Rodriguez and Velez-Rubio Culture Councillor Concepcion Perez unveiled the details last week, stressing it was a programme aimed at both residents and tourists. Activities will include workshops, baroque music concerts, theatre, a storytelling and painting competitions, exhibitions and conferences. The biggest event will be on October 6, when there will be a recreation of the inauguration of the church. The Culture Deputy congratulated the municipality for its efforts to protect its history, culture and traditions, commenting, “The passion of the Council and the whole of civil society for this commemoration is clear.”

Chance to say thanks THE young man from Olula de Rio who was prevented from leaving Taiwan for six months after he was involved in a traffic accident in which a woman died has had a chance to thank the Government Subdelegate in person for his part in helping get him back to Spain. Accompanied by his father, Alvaro Carrion met with Subdelegate in Almeria Manuel de

la Fuente in the provincial capital last week, telling him he was grateful for his efforts alongside the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines to find a resolution to his case. Alvaro had been on a twoweek trip to Taiwan for investigations related to his doctorate in marine geology. He rented a moped for a day out with friends and collided with an elderly lady on a bicycle,

who subsequently lost her life. A court decided to take away his passport until there was a decision on the case. Alvaro launched a campaign to raise the €50,000 which would enable him to reach a financial agreement with the woman’s family. Spanish press reported that in the end he paid the family €41,000, and a court subsequently ruled he was free to leave the country.

Square set to be social hub A NEW square under construction in Fines is set to become a social hub. Street overhaul THE provincial government is investing some €600,000 in overhauls on streets and lanes in Velez-Rubio. Resurfacing works are being carried out on 11 streets in the town itself and on three nearby lanes in order to improve traffic safety and circulation, and to better protect underground infrastructure like water pipes and power and telephone cables. Further road works are being carried out under the Rural Employment Development Programme, which is co-financed by the national, regional and provincial administrations. Almeria Council President Javier A Garcia was in Velez-Rubio last week to see the works progressing, and to meet with Mayor Miguel Martinez-Carlon.

premises for the use of municipal associations and groups. Provincial Council President Javier A Garcia paid a recent visit to the works, accompanied by Fines mayor Rodrigo Sanchez. “The works we are carrying out in the municipality are thanks to the Provincial Council,” the mayor commented. Sanchez said the premises

for associations would “give more life to our town,” adding that the Sector F works “are vital for our companies and for the area surrounding our pavillion.” This was Garcia’s first official visit to Fines since taking over as provincial council head. He described the municipality as “enterprising and brave, reflecting the values which have made our province great.”

GRATEFUL: The Government Sub-delegation in Almeria played an important part in making it possible for Alvaro Carrion to leave Taiwan.

AS the last supersonic age closed with the final abandonment of the Aerospatiale Concorde in 2003, Texas billionaire Robert Bass was ready to step forward and commence an effort to resume supersonic transport for the private individual. The company he founded and funded is named Aerion Supersonic and is headquartered in Reno, Nevada, USA. The company was founded in 2003 to develop new and efficient aerodynamic technologies for supersonic flight. Aerion revealed its AS2 12 passenger business jet design in 2014. After many twists and turns this amazing story is advancing towards its climax with the announcement in October 2018 that Aerion and GE Aviation had unveiled the GE Affinity TM engine, the first supersonic engine in more than 50 years. Then in February 2019 Boeing and Aerion Supersonic announced a partnership. As part of this partnership Boeing made a significant investment in Aerion to accelerate technology development and aircraft design, ‘and unlock supersonic travel for new markets.’ Flying at 1,610 kilometres per hour, the Boeing - Aerion AS2 aircraft could become the symbol of private and business travels, with the capability of transporting 12 passen-

According to cars.com, the Ferrari 458 Spider is the most crashed car in the world on a pro rata basis.

Fastest production Seat ever SEAT has upgraded its Leon with the new Leon CUPRA R ST special edition which is the fastest production car ever made by the Spanish manufacturers. The Leon Cupra ST will reach 250kph, with it sprinting to 100kph in just 4.9 seconds. An optional after sales tuning package boosts power from 296 bhp to 365 bhp and brings the sprint time down to 4.5 seconds pretty impressive for what is after all an estate car. Its two-litre turbo charged four cylinder engine is allied to four wheel drive to ensure you can make the best use of all that power, giving a smooth ride and snappy handling. In order to improve cornering speed and handling performance, new uprights have been added to the front axle that modifies the negative camber (2º);

the rear negative camber is also at 2º. The performance is matched by the distinctive CUPRA sound from the quad exhaust pipes at the rear of the vehicle giving drivers a sound as well as a visceral experience from behind the steering wheel. At first glance the Leon CUPRA R ST stands out from the competition with what Seat calls a ‘compelling’ exterior design. The newly developed lateral air intakes have been given a copper colour treatment that may not be to everyone’s taste, but is distinctive. Extensive use of carbon fibre helps with performance and is evident in the front diffusers and other aesthetic features. Antonino Labate, director of Strategy, Business Development and Operations of CUPRA, said: “The Leon CUPRA R ST represents our ability to

make unique, exciting cars with the most advanced technology ready for the most demanding and diverse of drivers.”

HOT: Leon Cupra R ST will hit 250kph.

Infiniti withdraws from Spain PRODUCTION STARTED: New BMW 7 is rolling off the line.

New BMW 7 series on the way BMW enthusiasts don’t have long to wait for the news 7-series sedan - production of the latest model has started at the Dingolfing plant in Bavaria. It is three-and-a-half years since the sixth generation of the car was launched, but never a company to rest on its laurels BMW has given its top model a thorough revision to give it ‘greater presence.’ For the first time in a BMW Group vehicle, a plug-in hybrid will be available with a sixcylinder engine. In the BMW 745e/745Le (combined fuel consumption: 2.3 - 2.1 l/100 km / 2.3 - 2.2 l/100 km) a 286 horsepower six-cylinder inline

engine is combined with a 113 horsepower electric engine, for a total system output of 394 horsepower. The new BMW 7 Series is also the first BMW Group vehicle with a fourth-generation battery. The latest battery-cell technology gives the luxury sedan an all-electric driving range of up to 58 kilometres, ensures local emission-free driving and is virtually silent. The battery installed in the BMW 745e / 745Le is manufactured in Dingolfing, just a few kilometres away, at the Competence Centre for edrive Production (compo-

nent plant 02.20). Ilka Horstmeier, Director of BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, said: “The BMW 7 Series has defined our identity at this site for over 40 years. We are proud that BMW’s top model, the new BMW 7 Series Sedan, will also be built here in Dingolfing. Our goal as the brand’s primary plant for the luxury class is to ensure that every vehicle our experienced and competent team puts on the roads guarantees excellent quality.” To ensure high quality standards are fulfilled from the very first vehicle, complex components underwent virtual testing

for fit accuracy prior to the start of production. Since production of the first 7 Series began in 1977, more than 1.9 million BMW 7 Series cars have been built in Dingolfing. From the very beginning, the global market was crucial to the success of the luxury sedan. The BMW 7 Series is easily the number-one export from the plant in Lower Bavaria. Last year, over 90 per cent of all units produced were exported. The Chinese market plays an especially important role for the model: In 2018, 44 per cent of global sales were delivered to customers in China.

MOTORISTS in Spain who fancy buying one of Nissan’s up-market Infiniti Motor Company cars will have to get a move on. The company has just announced a restructuring plan that will see it abandon the western European market in 2020. Instead the brand will focus on its biggest growth markets of North America and China, while ongoing operations in eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia, which continue to grow, will be unaffected. As part of the plan, Infiniti will electrify its portfolio from 2021 onward, discontinue diesel offerings and focus its resources on its biggest opportunities. The company will place more focus on its SUV lineup in North America, bring five new vehicles to China over the next five years, work to improve quality of sales and residual value, and realise more synergies with Nissan Motor Company. This is all part of Infiniti’s vision to become a top challenger brand in the premium segment, says the company. In anticipation of its planned withdrawal from western Europe in early 2020, the company says it is working to find alternative opportunities for any employees who would be affected, consulting with employee representatives where necessary and identifying opportunities for transition and training support where appropriate. Once this is complete, Infiniti will work with its retailers to conclude end of franchise agreements, providing the support and services necessary to ensure a smooth transition. Infiniti retail operations are to remain operational until a tailored transition plan is put in place for continued aftersales services, including vehicle servicing, maintenance and warranty repairs.

REVIEW by Tim Saunders WHEN the Hyundai i30 is delivered I am pleasantly surprised. I had been expecting a plain and functional five-door hatchback. But instead I am looking at the Fastback, a much more exciting proposition. Its sleek lines make it a vehicle to admire from the design perspective. The striking front is impressive if similar to a growing number of cars these days. The rear has hints of Mercedes about it… and Aston Martin without the hefty price tags. The i30 Fastback clearly has a talented designer. The result should be a Lexus beating sports saloon that is very pleasing on the eye and really does create a double take, especially for those who have previously ignored the virtues of a Hyundai. This family car surprises at every turn and probably the biggest achievement is the fact that it is powered by a tiddly little one-litre petrol engine, which promises low emissions. Through turbo charging, the engineers have cleverly squeezed almost

120bhp out of it to give more oomph than much bigger engined vehicles. Build quality seems a bit on the flimsy side. For instance, when shutting one of the rear doors there is still a fair amount of give after it is closed. While I’m on this subject I notice that the paint finish isn’t as sharp as it should be

around the boot rubber. My biggest gripe though is the positioning of the three seatbelt points in the rear. Bear in mind that I am the owner of an ageing Ford Fiesta and I regularly travel with three cumbersome car seats in the back without a problem. Therefore, I do not anticipate any problems in fitting the same three car seats in

more modern vehicles. The Hyundai is a considerably larger car. But oh dear, oh dear. The positioning of the belt buckle slots means that I must have wasted over an hour of my time during the course of the test fiddling around fitting the car seats for my two daughters. Because Henry’s is a slightly wider Cosatto seat it covers both slots for Harriett’s and Heidi’s car seats. I dread every time we all return to the car because I know that my fingers are really going to hurt as I have to forcibly lift Henry’s seat up to allow for Harriett and Heidi to be strapped in. I have had some problems with other new cars but never to this extent. The boot is large enough for the family’s luggage and has good amounts of storage space. The black cloth seats are comfortable and so is the ride. Overall it feels sporty and quite low to the ground. The six-speed manual box can be a little too notchy on occasions. It can be a slow car but if revved hard it does deliver a smile especially with the raspy note of the exhaust, which gets louder the harder it’s driven. Here is a car for a family of four without any car seats.

ONE of the more interesting developments in motoring away from the well-known car manufacturers has been taking place in Spain. Cyan Racing, formerly named Polestar, has just completed a comprehensive development programme of the 528-hp Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept on the roads of Spain. Lynk & Co is a Chinese-Swedish automotive brand owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Founded in 2016, its cars are positioned between those of the Geely brand and Swedish brand Volvo, which was-

New concept on Spanish roads bought by Geely in 2010. “This car is a development platform for future production performance road cars based on Lynk & Co technology,” said Henrik Fries, Head of Automotive R&D at Cyan Racing. “We have done this journey before with the Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar in combination with our previous motorsport programme with Volvo Cars and Polestar. To build a road car

based on the Lynk & Co 03 World Touring Car Cup race car is an exciting and important step forward for our future programmes.” The Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept is Cyan Racing’s interpretation of a race car for the road, utilising the same technology as the Lynk & Co 03 TCR race cars that Cyan Racing will compete with. “While this concept might be a bit extreme, we have learned that in

order to explore the true characteristics of a car you need to push it to its maximum and that is just what we are doing right now with this car,” said Thed Björk, racing and development driver for Cyan Racing. “We strive to find the optimal balance between responsiveness and performance in combination with predictable, balanced and safe behaviour. This is the same base phi-

losophy as when we develop race cars. I love driving this car as much as my race car.” The concept road car is equipped with a 528-hp two-litre turbo charged Lynk & Co engine, the same base engine as used in the Lynk & Co 03 production road car. The engine development of Cyan Racing is headed by the same team that have produced engines like the 2017 World Championship-winning 1.6 litre Volvo engine and the awardwinning V8 Volvo engine for the Australian V8 Supercars programme of Cyan Racing.

La Liga Review

Puma deal CREDIT: FC Barcelona Facebook

Barca are the champions in waiting THE La Liga title race is all but over after a hat trick from Barcelona’s Lionel Messi on Sunday against Real Betis. Barca went into the game knowing that second placed Atletico Madrid had slipped up away at Athletic Club on Saturday. And they kept their game tight and were clinical in attack, notching up a 4-1 win at the Estadio Benito Villamarin. Argentine Messi once again put on a class performance grabbing two first half goals before securing a hat trick with a brilliant chip over Pau Lopez in the 85th minute. Luis Suarez scored a wonderful solo goal leaving several Betis players in his wake. Betis grabbed a late goal

And in the second division RCD Mallorca beat Las Palmas 2-1 while neither Almeria nor Granada could hit the back of the net for a 0-0 draw.

LA LIGA has signed a new ball deal with Puma, spelling the end of a 23-year partnership with Nike. Puma will take over as the league’s ball manufacturer for the 2019-2020 campaign as part of a mega money three season agreement to produce all balls for the Spanish top flight. This brings to a close one of the longest collaborations in European sport. La Liga bosses have not confirmed the reasons behind the deal, or any financial details. Puma also recently announced it will be producing the kits for La Liga side Valencia for the next three seasons after they ended their deal with Adidas.

Historic attendance

INVESTIGATION: The fire broke out on March 14. PACKED: Wanda Metropolitano stadium. A RECORD number of spectators watched the La Liga Iberdrola top-of-thetable clash between women’s football teams Atletico Madrid and Barcelona at the weekend. Barca were handed new hope of winning the league after they closed the gap at the top with a 2-0 win away to leaders Atletico Madrid, in front of 60,739 at the Wanda Metropolitano - a record for a women’s football match at club level.

The club posted on their Facebook page: ‘Historical record attendance in a female club match, thank you fans for making it possible. Atletico de Madrid Femenino showed a lot of strength, we’ll keep working until the end.’ Asisat Oshoala and Toni Duggan got on the score sheet for the Catalans as they pulled themselves to within three points of Atletico’s tally of 66. The current league leaders started well in the

first 30 minutes with Meseguer and Kaci setting the tempo. But Barcelona soon picked up pace and it was a more even contest as halftime approached. It was the visitors who dominated the second half though straight after the break. Oshoala opened the scoring on 65 minutes as she got on the end of a corner to silence the Wanda, and with 10 minutes to go Duggan put Barca two up.

Race blaze probe MOTOGP organisers have pointed to an electrical short-circuit as being the likely cause of a blaze at a racing circuit in Spain that wiped out 23 electric racing motorbikes. The blaze in a newly built paddock at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto racetrack at around 11.45pm on March 14 was tackled by fire crews for almost seven hours, but they could not salvage the battery-powered racing bikes. It is believed the canvas and plastic of the tent contributed to the rapid spread of fire which was attended by five crews pumping 60,000 litres of water. Race organisers have now released their initial findings after the fire in the E-paddock

at Jerez de la Frontera. A statement said: ‘Although we are awaiting the official conclusion of the investigation by Local Police, initial evidence regarding the cause of the fire at the E-paddock of the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto seems to point to a short circuit as the main cause of the incident. ‘The source of the short circuit has yet to be identified but, once the fire broke out, it ignited the high-density battery which is part of the high-performance charger used at MotoE™ events. ‘The motorbikes were not connected to the charging infrastructure at the time the fire began.’
