Save our club EXCLUSIVE By Tara Rippin THE clock is ticking as to whether CD Torrevieja Football Club can be salvaged as crippling debts, bad management, poor results and attendance threaten its future. The Torry Army at its peak had a large expatriate following, and the fan club recently raised €4,000 to help the club. Games used to draw crowds of up to 6,000, but after several years of alleged mismanagement, disagreements and more losses than wins, this figure has plummeted to around 100. But sources close to the club exclusively confirmed this week that a group of people from ‘behind the scenes’ are currently trying to form a new management committee to ensure its survival. In the last seven days, the committee’s three directors have resigned, along with chairman David Cruz who has been accused of causing most of the problems, leaving the club owing at least €60,000 and needing the same again to get through the season. At the time of going to press, a decision on whether to create a new management committee was expected to be made by tomorrow (Friday). The source, who asked not to be named, said: “The problem is things which affected the club badly went on for so long, and the chairman disappeared, but wouldn’t resign until now, which meant nobody
would invest or bring in players.” But as well as trying to pay off debts and set aside cash for the remainder of the season, those behind the bid to save CD Torrevieja have other ideas.
Club sports director, Juanjo Fernandez has contacts with clubs in La Liga, and according to sources, there is a very real possibility of bringing in new players from superior squads.
