Almeria stands out at tourism showcase ALMERIA shone at this year’s FITUR International Tourism Fair in Madrid.

The provincial council reported the Costa Almeria stand at last week’s five-day fair had attracted even more visitors than last year, and nearly 30 presentations by local authorities and associations showed off the province’s extensive and varied offer as a tourist destination.

Sun and sand, stunning scenery, active tourism and fine food formed the main basis of the promotional materials. Also grabbing visitors’ attention was the Almeria Has Science promotional campaign, which highlights the province’s natural beauty and unique scientific and industrial points of interest, among them the Macael marble quarries

and the Cala Alto observatory.

One of the most high profile promotional events was the official premiere of the Flavours Almeria gourmet brand video featuring international singing star David Bisbal, which within days of being posted on the provincial council’s Facebook page had been viewed by tens of thousands.

Former Masterchef Celebrity contestant actress Bibiana Fernandez and bullfighter Oscar Higares presented the

video to an audience including celebrities and chefs from all over Spain, several with Michelin stars. Bisbal told the audience he has always been “a proud ambassador for Almeria,” adding, “I never hesitate to speak when I’m asked about the place where my career started.”

Provincial Tourism Deputy Fernando Gimenez said he was really pleased with the public interest in Almeria and with the meetings held with travel agencies and tour operators during FITUR “with the aim that our destination receives increasingly more national and international tourists.” He said he is “convinced they will bear fruit.”

NEWS EXTRA Bomb found EXPERTS from the National Police’s Tedax bomb disposal unit had to carry out the controlled explosion of a bomb dating back to the Civil War unearthed during works on new railway lines in Almeria City.

Rooted out GUARDIA CIVIL uncovered an illegal cannabis plantation in a property in Roquetas de Mar, making two arrests and seizing around 230 marihuana plants, scales, three airconditioning units, 23 lamps and 17 bottles of liquid fertilizer.

Assault arrest GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with a sexual assault on a woman in Roquetas de Mar in December when she was walking back to her home in the Las Marinas area.

BURNING ISSUE: Protestors hoped to influence the vote.

Brexit vote BRITISH MPs gathered in parliament on Tuesday to debate a range of options for Brexit the Prime Minister could present to the country and to the EU going forward.

Theresa May opened the debate in the House of Commons which took place ahead of the second crunch vote on her proposed Withdrawal Agreement.

Speaker John Bercow put seven amendments to the agreement forward for a vote.

The Labour opposition’s amendment was among those

accepted. It would commit the government to rule out a no deal by seeking a permanent customs union with the EU or holding a second referendum on withdrawal if passed.

Amendments put forward

by Conservative MP Dominic Grieve and Labour MP Yvette Cooper would lead to further votes on the deal and to a possible extension of Article 50 respectively.

Conservative Graham Brady’s amendment calling for changes to the Northern Irish

backstop was also selected.

May signalled the government would be prepared to back it.

MPs voted on each amendment in turn on Tuesday. The results of the vote were not known at the time of this newspaper’s publication.

Any that passed would commit the government to following through on their provisions if the overall deal also passed.

DISTINCTION: Vera Council recognised designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada for her contribution to promoting tourism in the municipality.

VERA Council has awarded fashion designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada a Vera town ‘Sol de Oro’ (Golden Sun) honorary distinction for creating the Vera, Heart of the Levante logo.

This is the 24th year of the Golden Suns, which the council awards to people or institutions which contribute to promoting tourism in the municipality.

Vera mayor Felix Lopez presented Ruiz de la Prada with her Golden Sun at the FITUR tourism fair, the designer declaring she was “super proud of the project.

“The next step is to go to Vera to see my heart everywhere,” she said.

Natural beauty THIS picture of a flamingo taking flight was shot in southwest Spain’s Doñana National Park which will be in the spotlight on Saturday when the world marks World Wetlands Day. The National Park lies in the Andalucian province of Huelva and also crosses into Cadiz and Sevilla. It covers an area of 543 square kilometres, 135 of which are protected.

Doñana is in the Guadalquivir River delta which flows into the Atlantic Ocean, creating its many marshes

and wetlands. Its level of biodiversity is one of a kind in Europe. The National Park is home to a myriad of animal species including fallow deer, Spanish red deer, wild boars, European badgers and the endangered Iberian lynx.

There are also several bird species that live or migrate there from Africa, including flamingos, mallards, Egyptian vultures and the endangered Spanish imperial eagle.

Doñana was established as a nature

reserve in 1969 when the Spanish government and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) bought parts of its marshland. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

The National Park attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. But it has also come under threat from farming and irrigation.

A holding dam at the Los Frailes mine burst and released acidic water into the Guadalquivir in 1998. It cost an estimated €240 million to clean up.

Attacks up THE number of attacks on teachers in Almeria’s classrooms has risen, figures from the Junta de Andalucia’s Education Delegation show.

Twelve teachers were victims of aggressions by students or by one of their family members over the 2017/2018 course, four more than the previous year.

City campaign ALMERIA City Council has launched a campaign to adorn the city with 2019 Spanish Gastronomy Capital billboards and panels on roundabouts, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and important buildings. There are already billboards on the airport and Mediterranean Games stadium roundabouts and at two main city entrance points.

THE Dreambeach Villaricos organisers and Cuevas del Almanzora Council announced the names of 15 artists joining the line-up of acts at the electronic music festival from August 7 to 11. They include Don Diablo, Paul Kalkbrenner, Adam Beyer, Agoria, Coone, Dimension, Nervo, Nina Kraviz and W&W.

Marihuana mistake A ROQUETAS DE MAR man is under arrest after Guardia Civil spotted him dumping three bags of marihuana when he got held up in a traffic jam following an accident.

Guardia patrols had been called out to the incident involving several vehicles and leaving a number of people requiring medical attention on the A-7 dual-carriageway in El Ejido. While officers were alerting drivers to the situation

and trying to keep traffic moving, they saw a man get out of a car about 200 metres away, open the boot, drop three large bags on the hard shoulder, then get back in his vehicle and start up the engine.

Suspicious, when the vehicle got level with the officers they pulled it over and identified the driver, while other Guardia picked up the bags.

They turned out to contain 10 kilos of the drug.

Armed hit

TWO young men accused of carrying out an armed hit in El Ejido are under arrest.

National Police believe the 18 and the 22-year-old targeted the Joker games hall in the town’s Calle Venezuela just before midnight on January 7.

Employees were about to close up, only two customers were left inside. As one customer went to the door to leave, two balaclavawearing attackers entered and pushed him out the way.

One was brandishing a gun and aimed it at a staff member’s head, threatening to shoot them if they didn’t open the cash register. The robbers got away with the day’s takings, adding up to €4,750 in cash.

Investigations led to the arrest of the suspected attackers eight days later.

The police also suspect the 18year-old who opened the door to the thieves could have been collaborating with them.

Peace and tolerance VERA brought forward commemorations of World School Day Non-violence and Peace, staging a series of events on Sunday at the El Palmeral fairground.

The day began with a mass breakfast, followed by a bike ride, a ribbon race for the youngest children, and a whole bunch of different fun workshops. There was also a lottery draw for all those taking part in the bike ride, with two bicycles up for grabs.

Children from the Municipal Council for Childhood read out a manifesto, a poem reflecting the importance of every action aimed at moving towards peace.

‘Every common commitment has to first come from the individual commitment which we should make to people,’ the children said.

Honouring donors’ generosity HUERCAL-OVERA has paid tribute to blood donors in Almeria.

Coinciding with the 20th Provincial Blood Donor Day, Mayor Domingo Fernandez cut the ribbon on a new Monument to Donors in the Paseo de la Alameda; a giant tree of life created by Lorcan sculptor Lola Fernandez Arcas.

“Today we recognise the gesture of all donors, people who in an unselfish, caring way give the gift of life,” the mayor said, prior to the ribbon-cutting on Saturday morning.

“They are an example to our society.

Thank you for such generosity.”

Fernandez also highlighted the fact that Huercal-Overa is one of the top five municipalities in the province for the number of donations, having been steadily increasing since 2011.

Among those attending the commemorative act were local councillors, regional MP Maribel Sanchez, provincial delegates Angel Escobar and Guillermo Casquet, Almeria Blood, Tissue and Organ Donor Association president Consuelo Godoy, and local residents who have donated blood.

Almeria takes up food capital ALMERIA has officially taken up the food capital baton from Leon.

The transferral of the Spanish Gastronomy Capital crown took place at the FITUR International Tourism Fair in Madrid last week in a ceremony attended by Popular Party leader Pablo Casado, Agriculture Minister Luis Plansas, national MPs, the Almeria Provincial Council president and Michelin-star chefs.

“There are many cities which merit being gastronomy capital, but passing on the baton to Almeria is greatly satisfying,” said Leon mayor Antonio Silva, commenting also on the benefits the gastronomy title had brought to his city, to food sector professionals and to businesses.

“Almeria 2019 is now underway and we’re not going to stop,” said Almeria mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco.

The mayor said more than 400 different food-related activities had been planned, remarking, ‘We have an exciting year ahead.’

In Fernandez-Pacheco’s opinion, the gastronomy capital title represents an opportunity for Almeria to show off its cuisine to the whole country and ‘the best way to put Almeria on the map.’

Eye on cycling market Flying the flag for sport THE Levante Firefighters’ Cultural and Sports Association and Almeria Provincial Council have come together to back two important sporting events in Turre, the Ruta MTB cycling trial and the municipality’s Popular Run.

The cycling trial will be over a 40-kilometre route and takes place on February 10.

The run on February 17 will be over a 10-kilometre route.

Both events will start and finish at Turre fire station.

said the races mark the beginning of the provincial sporting calendar, and congratulated the firefighters’ association for flying the flag for sport and for promoting a healthy lifestyle.

The two events are expected to attract 1,000 participants.

MOJACAR Council has an eye on attracting more cycling enthusiasts to the municipality.

Tourism Councillor Emanuel Agüero Leclerc was at one of Europe’s most important cycling fairs last week, the Vellofollies in Belgium, to promote Mojacar as a cycling destination. The councillor talked to tour operators specialis-

ing in sport-orientated holidays with the aim of boosting this kind of tourism and bringing more visitors to the area year-round.

He also took the opportunity to spread the word about the international Gran Fondo Costa de Almeria cycle race, which starts and finishes in Mojacar.

The 2019 race will be held on May 4, and will see

cyclists from all over Spain and from countries including Belgium, Holland and the UK racing over 185 or 125-kilometre routes.

This year ’s event is the second, and is a collaboration between Mojacar Council, the Hotel Marina Playa management, Kortweg Cycling Travel, the Almeria Provincial Council and the Velofutur logistics company.

FOODIES are in for a treat next month when Vera hosts the GastroAndalucia fair, bringing together cuisine, folklore and handicrafts.

Well-known food critic Pablo Amate presented the event at FITUR accompanied by Vera mayor Feliz Lopez and fair coordinator Juan Leal.

“In such an important year for Almerian cuisine, Vera is positioning itself at the heart of

Levante Almeria gastronomy,” the Vera mayor said.

GastroAndalucia will be staged in the El Palmeral fair ground from February 22 to 24. The Flavours Almeria brand will have a strong presence at the event, which will feature food tastings, cooking exhibitions, folk dance, arts and crafts, and provincial produce.

Lorry fire A FIRE in the tractor head of a lorry travelling in the Murcia direction on the A-7 dual-carriageway near Sorbas in the early hours of Sunday morning forced the closure of the road to traffic.

IT was a job well done for Coastal Cleaners Andalucia on Saturday.

Around 30 people took part in a beach clean up from Dolce Vita to level with the roundabout by the football ground in Mojacar Playa.

The group said although this stretch of beach was ‘fairly clean,’ they still collected 28 full bags of rubbish. A small team in Vera Playa collected 15 more.

Most of the discarded items they found were small pieces which are easily swallowed by marine life.

On the same day the group presented David the bottle cap octopus, a colourful, unique piece of artwork designed to raise awareness about Coastal Cleaners Andalucia’s work and to encourage people to think about the things they throw away.

The local administration took the opportunity of its presence at the FITUR International Tourism Fair to announce it will be organising the City of Vera International Flamenco Prizes in collaboration with the Andalucia Flamenco School for the fourth year.

Teenage moped thieves GUARDIA CIVIL detained two Roquetas de Mar teenagers suspected of stealing a moped which had been parked in a communal garage for a block of properties.

Officers also charged one of the youngsters with taking another moped which had been left in a street in the same area.

Following the initial reports of the thefts, one of the moped owners informed the Guardia they had found out someone in the municipality was selling moped parts, and when they went to take a look they realised they were parts from their own vehicle.

Guardia officers interviewed the inhabitants of the property where the individual selling the items lived, subsequently carrying out a search and finding a large number of moped parts and a moped on which the licence plate number had been filed off.

Officers established the parts were from the missing moped and that the moped with the filed off licence plate number had also been recently stolen.

After arresting the 17-yearold, the Guardia established he had been helped by a 16-yearold, who was also arrested.

The councillor, municipal tourist office staff and local business representatives had a busy few days at FITUR, with a packed agenda of meetings with tour operators and different representatives from the international tourism sector.

The Mojacar delegation also reported considerable public interest in the area among visitors to the Almeria Province exhibition space.

Taking a stand

DONATION: Turre mayor Maria Isabel Lopez, pictured on the right with Dames in Turre president Carol Pazdzierski, said she was very grateful to the group for their generosity.

A proud moment THERE was a proud moment for the Dames in Turre this week.

At the group’s January meeting on Monday, Chairman Carol Pazdzierski presented a cheque for €1,493.14 on behalf of the Dames to Turre mayor Maria Isabel Lopez.

The money will be allocated to the purchase of a defibrillator for the village, with planned uses including training for Civil Protection, police, teachers and village

association members, from the young to the elderly.

The mayor told the Dames’ members she was very grateful for their generosity, and said the defibrillator would be a valuable piece of equipment for everyone.

Dames in Turre raised the money throughout the year from raffles, days out and their Christmas market; Dames in Turre always donate any money raised to local charities.

The Dames were also pleased to welcome to the Monday meeting local AECC cancer association members, who had gone along to show their appreciation for the donations and support the Dames give to their group.

The guest speaker was the celebrated author Sarah Lock, who gave a very interesting talk on her life and her love of horses, and who generously donated some of her books as raffle prizes.

CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA demonstrated its stand against gender-violence, organising a day of activities related to the issue.

Well-known sociologist and expert on the subject Carmen Ruiz Repullo ran three workshops for pupils at the Jaroso Institute and gave a talk to families and professionals.

The sociologist has worked with young people and different groups on the prevention of violence and gender equality for 19 years.

“We must work together to achieve a world free of violence,” commented Cuevas Social Services and Equality councillor Melchora Caparros, adding that was why “we organise these kinds of activities aimed at the population, not only on notable dates, but throughout the year.”

The decision is based on a recommendation by the European Veterinary Federation (FVE), adopted in June 2016, which warns the needs of animals ‘cannot be met in a travelling circus, especially with regard to accommodation and the possibility of expressing natural behaviours.’

It adds the use of ‘wild animals is unjustified’ and has ‘little or no educational, conservationist or economic value’ while at the same time ‘violating’ the universal declaration of animal rights in 1987.

This states that every wild animal has the right to live free in its own natural environment.

Prior to approving the amendment, the city council carried out an online public consultation and met with representatives from several animal protection associations.

The move must now be ratified by the Plenary in March or April.

The use of wild animals in circuses is already prohibited in the provinces of Valencia, Murcia, Galicia, Cataluña, Cueta, La Rioja and the Balearic Islands.

The majority of Madrid municipalities have also outlawed the practice.

‘Negligent manslaughter’ investigation into Julen case A COURT in Malaga has opened a negligent manslaughter investigation into the death of two-year-old Julen who was killed when he fell down a well.

According to Spanish media, officials will examine two leads; whether the owner of the land Julen died on, or the man who bored the hole, Antonio Sanchez, were negligent, and how Julen came to be buried under large quantities of soil after his fall.

The negligent manslaughter charge carries a sentence of one to four years in prison for serious cases, or a fine in more minor instances. Anyone found to be at fault could also be liable for compensation to Julen’s parents, as well as for the costs of the rescue operation, thought to be millions of Euros.

Officials say these statements could uncover how Julen came to be buried under around 70 centimetres of soil and rocks after his fall, leading rescuers to incorrectly believe the boy was trapped two-thirds of the way down the borehole.

Fears any attempts to rescue the child from above could lead to more harm to him prompted experts to build a second hole and connecting tunnel, taking almost two weeks.

Separately, firefighters in Galicia have rescued a 61-year-old woman with the symptoms of hypothermia after she became trapped in a well.

One firefighter had to be lowered into the well, in the Salcedo area of Pont ever da, t o pul l out t he t r apped woman. She was stuck in the well with water up to her waist, emergency services said.

Medical personnel treated her at the scene after she was pulled free.

The 15-metre long mammal showed signs of severe weight loss and severe external wounds.

Luis Parpal, leading the team of professionals carrying out a post mortem, told Spanish press that early indications suggest an infection, ‘toxicological or biological, it’s still unknown, had weakened the specimen, leaving it adrift’ and that ‘a boat later hit the whale causing the wounds.’

Parpal, manager of the Official Association of Pharmacists of the Balearic Islands (COFIB), explained the team wants to find out if there is an infection that affects cetaceans in general that could rule out toxicology caused by plastic or microbiology interference.

Migration plan and disunity BRITAIN’S Home Secretary has unveiled the government’s back-up plans for EU citizens living in and coming to the country in a no-deal scenario.

Sajid Javid said EU migrants coming into Britain after Friday, March 29 would be allowed to stay for up to three years in the event of a nodeal.

That arrangement covers an interim period, with EU citizens then having to apply under a European Temporary Leave to Remain scheme once free movement ends.

Britain’s immigration system is then set to transition to a ‘skills-based’ model in 2021, which EU citizens will have to go through to remain in the country.

The announcement comes as separate research showed Britain has become a more divided country politically since the 2016 referendum. A total of 69 per cent of respondents to the Edelman Trust poll said they were ‘angrier’ about the state of British politics and society since the referendum.

Around 65 per cent said they thought Britain was on the wrong track, with the pollsters saying it showed Britain was becoming a ‘disunited Kingdom.’

Uncertainty continues to grow over how - and even if - Britain will leave the EU with a deal on Friday, March 29.

The NHS has released information on what it expects to happen to healthcare for British travellers in Spain in the event of a no-deal.

The Health Service said the access to healthcare was likely to change and European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) would be valid until March 29.

Government officials are attempting to strike deals on no-deal health arrangements, the NHS said. Health officials have called on expatriates to register with Spanish authorities to guarantee their access to doctors and cover themselves for a no-deal scenario.

Touching nerves THE two largest parties in Spain’s parliament spent Monday hurling accusations against each other on Catalan independence and the far-right.

Dolors Montserrat, of the conservative Partido Popular (PP), accused the prime minister of ‘betrayal’ over his overtures to Cataluña’s pro-independence regional government.

Meanwhile, the left-leaning Partido Socialista’s (PSOE) Jose Zaragoza said the PP was feeding the ‘monster’ of the far-right.

The exchanges touched raw nerves for both the left and the right of Spanish politics. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s decision to attempt to negotiate with Catalan leader Quim Torra since taking power in June has provided ample ammunition for the PP. TRADING BLOWS: Congress witnessed bitter exchanges this week. that he is neglecting the integrity of the Spanish nation. The prime minister has long argued his approach is designed to diffuse tensions which have been high in the region since the 2017 independence push.

Sanchez has had to lean on small regionalist parties in Congress, including those from Cataluña, in order to pass key legislation since PSOE took power in June.

The prime minister cannot afford therefore to alienate those parties. His government would be paralysed in parliament if they refused to back PSOE, as recent wrangling over the 2019 budget shows.

The PP’s accusations of Sanchez secretly supporting the breakup of Spain may be a cheap shot. But it is true current circumstances have presented a golden opportunity for pro-

Catalan groups to extract further concessions from Madrid on self-rule.

The reference to the ‘monster’ of the far-right comes as the PP and centrist Ciudadanos secured the support of Vox to help form their new coalition in Andalucia.

The PP and Ciudadanos claimed their actions were necessary but many on the left feel they have shown their true colours.

The decision to support Vox poses problems for both. Ciudadanos will now have to square its progressive circle with its willingness to work with reactionary political forces in order to gain power.

Vox’s aid may have helped the PP topple PSOE in what has typically been a key stronghold.

But working with them legitimises them as an electoral option, with the two in direct competition for the right-wing vote.

Obstacle course THE leader of the centrist Ciudadanos has said his party could work with the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista but added Spain’s prime minister was an ‘obstacle.’

Albert Rivera said Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had ‘muddled’national politics with his strategy of dialogue with pro-independence groups in Cataluña.

The leader of Ciudadanos also accused Sanchez of working for his own interests and not for the good of Spain.

“Sanchez has become an impediment that has muddled national politics which has become polarised and has encouraged separatist groups,” Rivera said.

Ciudadanos and PSOE have a chequered history but there seems to be a basis for an alliance on paper.

Ciudadanos pitches itself as a progressive pro-market alternative to the conservative Partido Popular (PP) while PSOE has championed liberal social causes and is socialist in name only.

But Ciudadanos’ recent history does not bear this out. The party has often aligned itself with the PP on a national level, helping to return former prime minister Mariano Rajoy to power in 2016.

Rivera’s comments will also raise eyebrows in Andalucia where Ciudadanos recently entered into a coalition with the PP with the help of the far-right Vox. Poll tracker: Partido Socialista (PSOE): 22.3 per cent, 98 seats Partido Popular (PP): 21.5 per cent, 89 seats Ciudadanos: 19.8 per cent, 67 seats Unidos Podemos: 14.8 per cent, 51 seats Result: PSOE largest party, no overall control.

Stole from granddad for holiday in Ibiza A T W E N T Y- F O U R YEAR-OLD man from Liverpool has been jailed for stealing £4,500 from his granddad to pay for a holiday in Ibiza.

Brett Bridgen reportedly used online banking to send money into his personal account the day before travelling to the Spanish island.

The offender appeared at Liverpool Crown Court last week and received a 17-month jail sentence.

without authorisation.

According to British press reports, the offender has been jailed in the past for stealing from his grandfather.

Liverpool Crown Court w a s t o l d t h a t B r i d g e n ’s grandfather has since found it difficult to sleep at night and to trust people as his relationships within the family had been strained.

Judge Brian Cummings reportedly said the off e n c e w a s t h e ‘ m o s t p e rsonal kind of fraud’ and that it has caused a ‘serious detrimental impact on the victim.’

He was given a 13month sentence for fraud and a four-month sentence for committing an offence while on bail.

A 70-year-old was killed when his car dropped 50 metres after a road collapsed in Mieres, just after 1pm last Thursday.

Hours earlier, at 11.20am, the dead body of a 41-year-old man was recovered in the Porciles River in Tineo, during a search operation launched after he was reported missing the day before.

The resident of Pena had told his family he was going to check on land nearby at 2pm, which meant crossing the river.

It is believed he made his journey at the same time river levels rose due to the intense rains.

And a 62-year-old man died when his vehicle was struck by a landslide in Llero, Laviana.

DEAD HORSES: Were found in a cattle deworming corridor in Vigo.

Horrific horse attack FOUR horses were found brutally beaten to death in Galicia.

The animals, an endangered species ‘garranos,’ were discovered with severe head injuries by two neighbours out walking.

As well as the corpses which had been dumped in a cattle deworming corridor in Vigo, there were five horses which they released.

The horses were micro-chipped and belonged to four different owners located in several municipalities of the region.

The farmers told Spanish press that the animals ‘never bothered anybody,’ they lived on a

high, very secluded area known as O Areeiro (Viladesuso, Oia).

In order to reach the location where the horses were, a one-kilometre non-asphalted track would have had to have been crossed and it’s believed the ‘culprit’ would have needed experience to be able to lead the wild horses away.

An iron bar, thought to have been used to beat the animals, was found at the scene of the incident.

The Seprona opened an investigation into the brutal attack on January 21.

A SAN VICENTE Local Police officer accidentally shot himself in the thigh while off-duty.

He was in a physiotherapy clinic when, for reasons now under investigation, the gun went off.

He immediately contacted the emergency services and was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

The officer, who is also a firearm training instructor, was described by the San Vicente police commissioner as ‘very experienced and meticulous.’

According to police sources, he still had his gun with him as he would have been late for his physiotherapy appointment if he had stopped to leave it at home.

He was also unable to explain how the gun was fired, the same sources revealed, but said afterwards that as he was close to the wall, no-one else was at risk.

The gun is now in the keeping of the Guardia Civil who are investigating the incident.

FIERCE winds which hit Palma from Sunday night and Monday morning left a trail of damage and kept firefighters busy around the clock.

At least 10 incidents were recorded with the majority involving fallen trees.

Fortunately there were no injuries, though a motorist had a lucky escape when a branch fell on his car in the Real de Secar area on Sunday night.

Firefighters were earlier despatched to Calle Can Estada after huge gusts had blown a tree into nearby telephone cables, where it was being supported precariously.

The emergency team evacuated and made the area safe.

And around 6am on Monday morning, several members of the public reported large tiles were falling from a building in Calle Sant Vicenc Ferrer into the road below.

France-Spain pipe setback SPAIN’S market regulator has rejected the first phase of a planned gas pipeline between the two countries saying it does not serve market needs.

The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) and France both rejected part-one of the Midcat project.

Midcat is set to cost €3 billion in total and it would span from Spain to France through Cataluña if built.

The CNMC said Spain should continue to work towards greater integration into the European energy network.

Santander set to cut offices

Company policy concerns THREE of the largest companies in Spain have said they are concerned over what they said was a lack of legal certainty, surrounding economic policies the government has proposed.

Electricity provider Iberdrola, the BBVA bank and telecommunications firm Telefonica said planned tax hikes on investments and the increase of the minimum wage to €900 were causes for concern.

It comes after government ministers announced a range of policies which also include new levies on digital companies and currency exchanges.

Silvia Ropas Ribas, deputy head of the government’s Directorate General of Taxes (DGT), said ministers would continue looking at how new rates would be applied before they are enforced.

The government’s tax plans come as part of its 2019 budget which Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero formally presented to parliament earlier this month.

Taxes have been raised to help fund planned increases in government spending.

SPANISH bank Santander has said it is going to close 140 of its British branches and cut 1,270 jobs due to the rise in online banking.

The bank is set to talk with unions over the closures.The bank’s British arm said branch transactions had fallen by 23 per cent during the last three years as the use of its online service has grown.

Susan Allen, head of retail banking at Santander UK, said: “The way clients relate to the bank has changed dramatically in recent years.”

Maria Jesus Montero said during a visit to the Spanish Confederation of Business Organisations (CEOE) that deductions could be made ‘in principle.’ She added the government was looking into

how the new levy could be combined with existing corporate taxes.

Montero said the government wanted to be sure there were no misunderstandings on the part of business if and when the new tax comes into force.

The new levy, dubbed the ‘Google Tax,’ taxes companies 3 per cent on online advertising, brokerage and the sale of data and metadata.

A ghostly visitation LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL, I’ve just appeared in a haunted hotel. No not as an apparition (yeah, yeah!) Just as this old, boring pop-singing mortal I’m afraid.

The hotel in question is situated in the depths of the beautiful, but somewhat foreboding New Forest. It’s called the Foxlease.

Parts of this imposing edifice date back to the 16th century and it abounds with stories of unexplained noises and apparitions, which over the years have manifested both to its staff and residents alike.

All right, all right, I can hear the snorts of derision from here. No, this is not some establishment trying to sell rooms on the backs of paranormal spirits created by some dubious PR exercise.

On the contrary, because the main core of their business is centred on Guides, Scouts, and schools whose students take camping holidays and ‘outward bound’ courses in the summer, they are trying to keep the whole thing as quiet as possible.

As a spiritualist and staunch believer in such things, I was more than a little interested to find out as much as I could about their numerous supernatural experiences.

SCARY: Would you have the courage to stay the night?

Subsequently, on further investigation of the hotel I found that a number of the restricted areas (purposely not used as guest accommodation!), were extremely spooky indeed.

In fact, while I was there, the landlord took a small party on a guided tour of these areas. Within a few minutes, one young lady rushed back into the lounge, and shaking noticeably, told me she was frightened to even walk down one of the corridors! The staff and landlord were actually extremely ‘matter of fact’ and quite nonchalant

about the whole situation. An acceptance I had not actually experienced before, and did indeed lend a whole new authenticity to their ghostly claims and stories.

Apparently none of them lock their bedroom doors at night, they explained this was a precaution enabling them to escape in a hurry should they feel the need! All had heard the noise of footsteps and children talking and crying. The landlord told me last summer he was having a drink with a friend in the garden, when the friend sud-

denly froze and went deathly white. When he asked him what the matter was, he said he’d just seen a woman walk out through the wall of the hotel!

Apparently, a few years ago, without them naming the hotel, Channel Five’s TV paranormal ‘Ghostbusters’ spent a few nights filming there.

They later reported, in their opinion, there were eight ghostly ‘guests’ residing on the premises.

Sometime later the landlord invited the Royal Navy paranormal squad (yep they really do exist, mainly to investigate reports of ship haunting) to look in to their claims. This team had no connection or links with the TV series, but lo and behold, after their overnight stay, they too reported they had detected eight spirits in the hotel! Whoooooo!

Well be that as it may, and having actually seen a (never forgotten) manifestation at the age of four, I am not a sceptic and my mind is always totally open to all things both spiritual and mortal.

I have to confess however, despite their kind invitation, we declined their offer to stay the night!

Telly making me grumpy Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man AS my readers know by now, Mrs S and I like a bit of telly. Currently there are two shows making me grumpy: The Voice and The Greatest Dancer.

It’s not the content, but the judges, and not actually the judges themselves, but their clothes. The shows have been on for three weeks now and in every episode they are wearing the same clobber.

Now, either they stink, or all the episodes are filmed on the same day. If so, at least give them a few changes of clothing because it’s really getting on my nerves.

How hard can it be to have a few shirts around for the blokes and some frocks for the ladies? I mean, for goodness sake, make an effort to make me believe it’s just not churned out on one day.

Here’s another one the PC brigade have come up with. In movies where the storyline features a disabled person they say the part should only be played by a genuinely disabled person.

I am registered 66 per cent disabled so I am allowed an opinion on this. Here it is.

Don’t talk nonsense - if there is a disabled actor who fits the role then fine, and if not, then use any actor who can do the part justice and make the movie as realistic as possible.

Eddie Redmayne, Al Pacino, Daniel DayLewis, Tom Hanks and Leo DiCaprio - to name just a few - have all done it, done it well and in a sympathetic way.

Who are we to say that Sean Penn has no right to portray someone with a disability?

That’s his job - to portray people who he is not - and he’s pretty good at it too. That’s what actors do! It’s getting ridiculous.

Let’s take advertising. Does every painkiller ad have to be played by someone with a headache? What about the Maltesers ad where two secretaries are chatting - here’s an exclusive - they are really actors!

Oh and here’s something I’m sure is going to shock you: the meerkat compare insurance ads don’t actually feature real meerkats!

Of course, there are some brilliant actors with disabilities or learning difficulties who play great parts like Liz Carr in Silent Witness, RJ Mitte from Breaking Bad and Liam Bairstow from Coronation Street.

On that subject, I’m trying to get hold of David Walliams as I am the real Andy Pipkin from Little Britain, because although I use a wheelchair, I can get up and walk and I want them to use me in the show in future.

Doctor Who kicks off series 12 filming in South Africa Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill are filming thanks to the cast of Walsh’s other show, The Chase. His chasers revealed while accepting a National Television Award on January 22, that Bradley couldn’t be with them because he was busy working on Doctor Who in South Africa! Doctor Who previously used South Africa to double for the American Deep South in the 13th Doctor adventure ‘Rosa,’ which saw the TARDIS family trying to preserve a historic moment in the American civil rights movement from a time meddler.

More questions than answers Reader John Hare in Almeria Province has taken issue with the EWN over its coverage of the PGOU master plan that helps to make homes legal in Zurgena.

HAVING attended the PGOU meeting, it was good to think that quite a high number of Zurgena residents may eventually, in time, get legal status for their property.

However, having sat through the whole meeting, seen the article in the Euro Weekly News, I must take issue over some of what I heard and have read. The main reason for my suspicion is the status of some of the land as on the plan shown at the meeting, seems to be clearly wrong and contravenes one of the strictest parts of the LOUA planning laws. That is: Article 46. Non Urbanisable Land (Suelo No Urbanizable) Section i. “It presents real risks of erosion, slippage, landslide, flood or other natural risks.” Many properties have already been affected by flooding and some have lost land into the ramblas (gulley). There are even cases where the villas are very close to crumbling edges and look dodgy to say the least.

Such examples, I would have thought, must be non-urbanisable yet shown on the provided plan as Non Consolidated Urban. I therefore think it is misleading to the community to make quotes such as ‘approval of the PGOU in its entirety’ and ‘all properties shown as urban consolidated, urban not consolidated and urbanisable will become urban consolidated, in other words fully legal.’

If the council intends to issue more building licences on such land in the future, surely, this could be very misleading and costly to unsuspecting buyers.

Ultimately we need honesty and transparency from the council.

Rest in peace WE were sad to learn that the remains of Julen, the twoyear-old boy who fell down a well in Andalucia’s Malaga Province, were found on Saturday.

Post-mortem tests have now begun on his body, with the results due in about two weeks. Coroners and forensic experts said the two-year-old probably free fell 71 metres down the bore hole in Totalan.

Sunday saw hundreds of mourners gather at Malaga City’s San Juan Cemetery for Julen’s funeral. Parents Jose Rosello and Victoria Garcia were joined by government officials and those who took part in rescue efforts for the ceremony.

The death of Julen is tragic, made all the more so by the fact the two-year-old’s parents lost another son in 2017.

The search for Julen saw the local community rally round to lend its efforts in hope of reaching him alive.

Their efforts were in vain but in the tragedy we saw how the desire to put aside daily concerns to help those in jeopardy can push people to heroic lengths. Those efforts captured the imagination of our readers, Spain and large parts of the world.

The death has also cast light on the wider issue of illegal wells in Spain. The Ministry of Agriculture estimates there could be as many as 510,000 throughout the country.

But for now we join our readers who commented in the hundreds on our coverage to say: ‘Rest in peace’ to Julen.

Two-year-old had ‘clean fall’ down 71m hole From what the autopsy has revealed ‘Julen’ had a ‘clean fall’ 71 metres - not 110 as originally mentioned. He landed on earth that filled up the lower part of the well and there was no water. He wouldn’t have drowned, but most definitely that fall would have killed him instantly.

You may wonder why a stranger in the UK is writing this?

I’ve no one to talk to - and Julen has been on my mind since the accident. It helps me - as i hope it does you too - to know he didn’t suffer.

It all adds up THE prospect of doing a large amount of exercise can sometimes be off-putting, and the more we avoid it, the guiltier we feel, creating a cycle where exercise can seem like a chore rather than something to be enjoyed.

But one scientist says that instead of focusing on creating large goals and then feeling bad if we don’t achieve them, we should actually just take small steps towards fitting a little more activity into things we

naturally do every day.

Michelle Segar, a psychologist and director of the University of Michigan Sport, Health and Activity Research and Policy Centre, told American radio station NPR, that we place too much importance on thinking of exercise as an organised activity which must involve the gym, running, Spandex, or sweating. Segar explains that literally every time we move our bodies we are benefiting our health, whether that move-

ment constitutes traditional forms of exercise or not.

She says: “The research does now show that basically all movement counts, and anything is better than nothing,” adding, “I’ve been astounded that even up until today, very educated people don't know - don’t believe - that walking actually ‘counts’ as valid exercise.”

Loretta DiPietro, exercise research scientist at George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health, told the same station that scientists measure how an activity affects our body using the value MET (metabolic equivalent). She explains this means that any and all activity has a rating, and some routine tasks we perform on a near daily basis without considering them exercise have a higher MET value than some workouts. DiPietro says exercise that is moderate to intense will

have a value of between three and six METs, both of which are covered by mopping (3.5 METs), or slowly climbing the stairs (four METs). Climbing the stairs fast uses nine METs, more than line dancing at eight.

And given that we are told to take in 150 minutes of moderately intense exercise a week, it is easy to see how normal activities could easily add up.

DiPietro says this means instead of focusing on increasing levels of organised exercise, if you are unlikely to actually stick to this it may be better to just slightly increase the level of activities we already perform. This could mean taking the stairs instead of the lift or parking further away when shopping.

STAIR WALKING: Scientists say this could be as good as other exercise.

Quarter of antibiotics ANTIBIOTICS - once prescribed freely for even minor infections - are increasingly being given out less frequently due to concerns we are becoming resistant to them.

Even so, a recent study found that in 2016 one in six patients was still given antibiotics they did not need.

Researchers at the University of Michigan looked at antibiotic prescriptions for privately insured Americans and found that 23 per cent were unnecessary, and 28 per cent were given without diagnosis, while only 36 per cent were possibly necessary, even fewer - 8 per cent were absolutely necessary.

The data also showed that one in 10 children had received an unnecessary prescription in 2016.

Kao-Ping Chua, lead author of the study, warned that the study may still underestimate the full extent of the problem, and that overuse of antibiotics may one day make even the mildest of infections impossible to treat.

OF all the self-improvement obsessions which have gripped the UK this month - like ‘Veganuary,’ ‘dry January’ and ‘clothes sobriety’ (a respite from retail therapy) - none seems to have gripped more than the first one, the worship of the plant-based diet, veganism.

But please can we stop talking about it so much? Yes, it’s on the rise, however, and in the past four years the number of vegans in the UK has quadrupled to 600,000, with many more signing up to ‘Veganuary.’

But let’s get to the meat (sorry, couldn’t resist) of the issue. The problem with veganism (and vegetarianism, for that matter) is it seems to turn what simply amounts to a food choice, into basically, a religion.

One which apparently requires its adherents to try to make converts of the rest of us in a humour-free, hectoring fashion with about as much warmth and brio as a dinner party jointly hosted by Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May. My other ‘beef’ is why do vegans try to imitate meat, fish or dairy products? An imitation burger will always compare unfavourably with a decent meat one. They should be developing their own cuisine, with

As veganism grows and McDonald’s offers vegan Happy Meals, even naysayers like Gordon Ramsay, who once said if his children ever went vegetarian he’d electrocute them, offered a Veganuary menu. (Well, business is business.)

Take my dog, for instance, who is lactose and gluten-intolerant but loves chips. Only kidding! As for me, I’m off to have my eggs, bacon, black pudding, sausages and fried bread (all cooked in delicious duck fat) breakfast. What more could anyone want?

Spotted Dog or Railway Cake THIS is a traditional Irish recipe and a variation of soda bread. Made as a Sunday treat, or wrapped still warm in a muslin cloth to take to the workers bringing in the harvest, the addition of a handful of fruit and an egg made it extra special. The women looked after the hens and sold eggs for extra pennies.

The one egg used in this, if it had been sold, could have bought a new hat pin, hence the term ‘Pin Money’? In the days before refrigerators, soda bread was the perfect way to use up sour milk.

If you cannot get the buttermilk, add two tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice to 600ml fresh, full fat milk.

Ingredients • 450g plain white flour • 1 level teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda • 1 level teaspoon salt • 2 level teaspoons sugar • A handful of sultanas • 1 organic egg • About 425ml buttermilk Method Preheat your oven to 220º Celsius Sieve the flour and bicarbonate of soda into a large mixing bowl. Add the salt, sugar and sultanas and lifting it up in the air gently mix everything together

OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency.

We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil.

We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

SPOTTED DICK: A light scone like bread with a crunchy crust, serve warm with butter. (you need to add air to keep it light).

Make a well in the centre of the mix.

Break an egg into a jug and top up with the buttermilk to the 425ml mark (the egg is part of the liquid measurement). Beat it with a fork and add most of the liquid to your bowl of flour and fruit, keeping some back. Now using your hand with stiff fingers, gently start to mix from the centre letting the dry in-

gredients fall from the sides as you go, you need to be fairly gentle to keep the air in. You want a soft dough, but not too wet and sticky. Add a little more buttermilk if you think it is too stiff.

Once mixed, tip out onto a lightly floured surface and wash and dry your hands. Now with floured fingers, gently pat the dough into a round of about two inches deep and make a cross along the

top, going right round the sides (according to Irish folklore this is to let the fairies out).

Put your formed dough onto a lightly floured baking sheet and put it into the oven, turning the oven temperature down immediately to 200º C. Bake for 35 - 40 minutes… You can check if it is baked by tapping the base.

If it makes a hollow sound it is done.

Mine baked in 33 minutes.

The result was a beautifully light scone like bread with a crunchy crust.

Serve warm with lashings of butter and a few slices of Cheddar cheese.

Shopping for the essentials Nick Horne’s Morning Read Freelance correspondent, London, England RETAIL THERAPY has been the order of the day since the middle of the 20th century as Europe caught the bug of consumerism and planned obsolescence from the USA. Our economies boomed. In the words of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan we had ‘never had it so good.’ One wave of technology followed another. From the automobile to colour televisions from central heating to three-piece suites, the landscape of a family home and mobility has been transformed. In much less than the lifetime of an individual, expectations have been radically changed.

Living standards have been much raised.

Travel and Tourism is now by some measures the largest global industry. Most of the developed world expects to travel to the ends of the earth for a week in the sun. While two weeks in Benidorm are still popular and weekends in Marbella or Barcelona are as glitzy as ever, the search for a moments diversion now encompasses Oslo, New Orleans or even the South Seas of the Pacific. The Galapagos Islands are no longer considered distant, more an option to add to the visit list.

Of course, advertising has helped to raise expectations and even to create them. A holiday in Spain involves so much more than just suntan lotion. Which suntan lotion? A whole ecosystem of products becomes vitally essential to fully appreciate a fortnight’s annual holiday in the sun and I am

not just thinking of sangria and paella. The clothes, the books, the shoes, and of course the essential souvenir for the ride home on the jammed airplane, a straw donkey.

London’s Oxford Street was once famed for the January Sales which naturally enough started on Boxing Day in December. With people falling or rushing into selected shops having camped out on pavements often for days to ensure they bought the longed for item.

Some years ago, Black Friday arrived on these shores and has since gone global. A shopping event imported from the USA, one which had a logic in the USA as its origin lies within the holiday weekend of Thanksgiving but in Europe and the UK it seemed to me always a little odd. Black Friday advertising in the newspapers and on TV in the week prior seems OK, but when it goes on and on not only for the day after and beyond, it is very odd indeed.

REMEMBER Harold Wilson and George Brown, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, or even further back, K and B? Political duos rarely last, as it happened in Spain too, with Felipe Gonzalez and Alfonso Guerra, so Pablo Iglesias and Iñigo Errejon were an estrangement waiting to happen.

Errejon was one of Podemos’ founders, but the rot had set long before 2017 when Iglesias’ partner Irene Montero eclipsed Errejon by taking over as party spokesman and the party’s second in command.

The split is likely to be less helpful than the Podemos hierarchy might hope, because the considerable number of voters who did not take to party supremo Pablo Iglesias were rather taken with Errejon.

Podemos came out of nowhere, arriving with flash and a bang and a wallop by winning five seats in the European parliament in the May 2015 elections.

That’s the trouble with arriving in a blaze of glory as fireworks so often turn out to be damp squibs. Are you listening Santiago Abascal?

Out-of-joint nose MADRID mayor Manuela Carmena is an independent backed by Mas Madrid while Iñigo Errejon has left his parliamentary seat but insists that he still belongs to Podemos.

Meanwhile, he has nailed his colours to Carmena’s mast to campaign with Mas Madrid for the Madrid Community presidency, instead of Podemos as originally planned.

Errejon for community president? A lot of people would like to see him put Iglesias’ nose out of joint and he might manage both.

An ill-wind THE PSOE has the jitters, fearing that Podemos’s imminent shipwreck won’t do it any favours come May and the municipal and regional elections.

At present, Podemos shores up PSOE town and city halls all over Spain and Pedro Sanchez expected more of the same this time round.

What’s the problem? Hardcore supporters will still vote Podemos while outside Madrid they’ll only have the PSOE to turn to, just as pre-Vox right-wingers only had the PP to vote for. The Iglesias-Errejon split could be just what Sanchez needs.

FORMER PRIME MINISTER: Harold Wilson.

The anointed one AT the Partido Popular’s recent Madrid conference the former president Mariano Rajoy made only a fleeting appearance.

He also demonstrated his opinion of Pablo Casado by not staying around long enough for a family photo with Jose Maria Aznar which would formally anoint the present PP as a worthy successor.

On leaving politics after losing the vote of no confidence at the end of May, Rajoy said, “I will be loyal” ; a pointed but elegant dig at Aznar who had named him as his successor in 2003.

Aznar was not loyal to Rajoy, criticising him for being insufficiently forceful and ditching his honorary presidency of the Partido Popular in 2016.

Much of that was pique because Rajoy did his own thing, not Aznar’s, so it will be interesting to see how Casado rubs along with Aznar although since the former is further to the Right than Rajoy ever was, everything should be fine and dandy. Until Casado spreads his wings, that is.

I’VE written here before about some of the strange musical phenomena which punctuated my school days.

In 1981, I was taken aback by the arrival in England of The Stray Cats. The spectacularly coiffured retro rockers who took the 1950’s sound of Sun Studio Rockabilly, added a dash of punk attitude and styling, and for a brief period, added something different and pure to the charts.

Formed in Massapequa, New York in 1979 by guitarist and singer Brian Setzer, double bass player Lee Rock and drummer Slim Jim Phantom, the trio quickly picked up a substantial following across New York.

‘Sextortion’ is the newest twist in this never-ending story. Hackers with stolen passwords ambush their victims, showing the passwords as ‘proof’ they have records of porn site visits, which they will release to family and friends if ransoms are not paid.

According to the ‘Have I been pwned’ website (see alongside), my own far less salacious data went public thanks to breaches of Dropbox, an online ‘spambot’ in Holland, and a South African cinema club I joined in another life.

As the site specifies, the stolen data includes my birth date, my e-mail address, my gender, my name, my passwords, my phone numbers, my physical address and my spoken languages.

All that seems missing is my underwear size. At least until M&S gets hacked.

IS your e-mail still secure, and with it, your registrations on sites which have recorded that e-mail address? One simple check may help.

Being ‘pwned’ (pronounced ‘poned’ but your mileage may differ) is a streetwise corruption of being perfectly ‘owned.’

Hence the name of the definitive site, ‘Have I been pwned’ (https://haveibeen pwned.com). Enter your address, press search, and brace for dismay.

Of my three current addresses, only one is still sacrosanct, the other has starred in no fewer than three infamous dumps, and the third in ‘just’ one. Ouch.

Obviously the service only searches among known data dumps from breaches; there’s no guarantee your info isn’t also lurking out there somewhere else, quietly ticking like the proverbial time bomb.

I like bees.

Apart from the honey angle and the fact that there would be a total worldwide catastrophe if bees suddenly disappeared overnight, I like them for themselves.

I have several bee-attracting plants near the back door, and at appropriate times the bees will arrive in their hundreds at this door.

They will cluster around the door, humming melodiously, trying to attract my attention.

I open the door, whereupon they politely request a saucer of water. Flying with such little wings, they tell me, is very thirst-inducing.

They are indeed polite little creatures. They precede their requests with a ‘please’ followed by a ‘thank you.’

As is inevitable with this quantity of tiny wings beating frantically to keep their furry bodies aloft, there are collisions, mainly with the large mass of me.

But they don’t lose their tempers; they bounce off me with an ‘oops, sorry, didn’t see you there!’ and continue about their designated tasks.

A bee can find a flower over a radius of up to two miles, fill up with nectar, and then find its way back to the hive.

If there are several hives, it will find its own hive, and not blunder uninvited into the neighbour’s hive.

So why is it, if they fly into the house through an open door, they can never find the way out again through the same door?

Can some bee whisperer please explain windows to them?

The delegation also promoted the various walking routes in Albox to see almond trees in flower, monuments of interest in the town and the old covent located on Plaza Mayor which is set to become Albox Town Hall.

Further attractions of Albox for visitors, they said, are the high quality of life and the peace and quiet.

AIM: Almanzora Valley Tourism companies want to make it the rural region with the highest number of electric vehicle charge points per kilometre in the country.

Power to electric THE Almanzora Valley is aiming to lead the way in promoting the use of electric vehicles.

Tourist companies from the area presented the ‘Almanzora Electric’ project at the FITUR international tourism fair, the goal of which is to convert the valley into the rural region with the greatest number of electric vehicle charge points per kilometre in Spain.

The Valle del Almanzora Tourism Company Association initiative aims to preserve the region’s rural charm, project marketing head Alvaro Perez commenting, “We want to continue enjoying our marvellous nature, exquisite gastronomy and unique traditions.”

Association president, Oscar Muñoz, said it was hoped 20 more charge points would

be established in the valley this year, at restaurants, hotels, hostels or municipal locations.

A number of entities are collaborating on the project, among them the Almeria Provincial Council, the Andalucia regional government, and the association of Almanzora Valley municipalities and Almeria 2019.

EXPERTS say they hope Spain’s central government may make changes to urban planning laws, allowing for easier development.

At the Europa Press Foro Inmobiliario (real estate forum) in Madrid, specialists claimed they want to work with the government to improve urban planning and reduce regulatory barriers in an effort to create more office buildings, warehouses, urbanisations, and public buildings.

At one conference, ‘The real estate sector facing the challenge of planning large cities,’ according to ideal ista.com, experts discussed the General Urban Plan (PGOU), the current legislation governing planning law.

Many of the attending specialists spoke of a need to standardise planning laws, making it easier for developers to work across the country. Among those advocates was Marcos Sanchez, managing director of Valdebebas, a new urban development outside of Madrid.

explaining, “It is necessary for the different municipal and autonomous governments to work on the area of transportation and day-today improvements in order to evolve at the same time as the cities themselves.”

Fernando Ferrero, director of Merlin Properties, agreed, adding, “in 20 or 25 years the types of demands on mu-

nicipalities have changed. I think public-private collaboration is positive for the sector, because it can pick up the experience of the private sector to improve execution times.”

Gabriel Sanchez, general business director of Neinor Homes, added, “a state pact is required which grants viability and visibility to promotion. You have to establish how you want cities to be in the coming years. The regulatory disparity in Spain affects the costs and financing of the sector.”

He added space was at a premium in Spain, saying, “The soil cannot serve as a currency or be linked to the cycles of the sector, and demand should be stable.”

At the end of the conference, Consuelo Villanueva, director of Institutions and Large Accounts at the Valuation Society, spoke about the need to make urban planning laws more flexible in order to prepare for the many changes coming to cities over the next few years.

“ Porsche anniversaries GERMAN car maker Porsche is celebrating the birthdays of three of its classic models: the 917, 914 and the younger Panamera.

Both the 917 and 914 are celebrating 50 years of being on the road this y e a r, w h i l e t h e Panamera has reached its 10th birthday.

Porsche said it was committed to making the history of its company tangible. Events have been planned at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany and others are set to take place across the world.

Technicians at the Porsche Museum have been working to restore the first 917 ever built, to mark the occasion.

AROUND 35 per cent of the world’s population drives on the left-hand side of the road, with countries including Britain, Australia and Mozambique among those opting for left-hand roads.

BIRTHDAY: The first 917 is being restored for its 50th anniversary.

They have been working for years to return it to the condition the car was in when it made its world debut in 1969.

The 917 premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in 1969 and it won the first of 19 gold medals

at the Le Mans 24 Hours race a year later.

The 914 was first presented at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany in 1 9 6 9 . I t w a s G e r m a n y ’s f i r s t mid-engine sports car and came

i n t w o t y p e s , o n e w i t h a f o u rcylinder engine and another with six cylinders.

The Porsche Panamera was the company’s first four-door saloon car and it was premiered in Shanghai in 2009.

It featured a number of technical innovations never included in a luxury series Porsche car.

A special exhibition has been organised at the Porsche Museum to mark 10 years since it made its debut.

BMW’s newest 7-Series GERMAN car maker BMW has unveiled the newest model in its 7-Series which the company said would take its luxury car offering to ‘unprecedented’ levels.

The BMW 7-Series is now set to hit showrooms after it was unveiled in Shanghai.

It features a new exterior design giving it greater presence and precision as well as new interior elements.

Uwe Dreher, head of brand communications at BMW, said the car was ‘self-assured.’

“The new BMW 7-Series embodies the way of life of a target group who follows its aims and ideas in a self-determined and independent manner regardless of any external obstacles,” Dreher said.

The car comes equipped with a new BMW kidney grille and a 50-millimetre taller front end, giving it a striking look.

The rear end has also been extensively redesigned. The company said the design included integral exhaust

tailpipes with larger chrome surrounds.

Buyers of the 7-Series have a range of engines to choose from, and all meet the Euro 6dTEMP exhaust standard.

ALREADY the holder of a number of Spanish football records, Barcelona’s win over Girona on Sunday edged superstar Lionel Messi even closer to yet another milestone.

Taking into account the 0-2 victory, the Argentine, 31, has now won 328 matches in 437 appearances in La Liga, overtaking Raul Gonzales, who notched up 327 out of 550.

Just six more victories will see Messi match the all-time record, held by Real Madrid legend Casillas with 334 wins.

The Barca favourite holds the record for the most goals scored (50) in a single league campaign in 2011/2012, and is the highest scorer in the history of La Liga.

While Nelson Semedo opened the score sheet on Sunday, banging home his first goal of the season, Messi himself guaranteed the points with a second inside the last 20 minutes.

Atletico also celebrated a 2-0 victory when they took on Getafe on Saturday, keeping them hot on the heels of leaders Barcelona.

SERBIAN tennis player Novak Djokovic has bested Spanish rival Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open, securing victory in Melbourne just over two hours.

Djokovic, 31, beat 32year-old Nadal by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3 on Sunday, his biggest margin of any of his victories.

It is the third consecutive win for Djovovic in seven months, having previously taken home titles at Wimbledon and New York.

Djokovic said the match was truly perfect. Going up against the Mallorcan Nadal made the match important but amazing, he added.

“The ultimate clay-court challenge is to win against Nadal,” Djovokic said.

“I don’t want to sound arrogant, but I always believe in myself.”

Nadal said the way Djokovic played was ‘unbelievable’ but added he had not been able to go the extra mile.

CABRERA Lawn Bowling Club hosted The Brindle Bowl Hong Kong Pairs between January 17 and 20 January.

The Brindle Bowl, although a pairs competition, is played on a slightly different format with each of the two players of the team taking it in turns to lead and skip. The first player bowls two woods, the second player bowls all four woods and then the first player bowls their last two woods. A very interesting format.

There were some very good rounds and closely contested matches, but the standout pairs throughout the competition were Sandra and Peter Marriott, who had won this competition in 2017 and 2018, and Bob and Penny Craig, who deservedly met in the final.

Bob and Penny got off to an excellent start, and after 12 ends were 12-5. Sandra and Peter

however never gave up and pulled back to 11-13. But unfortunately for them Bob and Penny won the last end and the final 15-11.

Some great bowling and many congratulations to Bob and Penny.

The many spectators who braved the cold weather thoroughly enjoyed the display of bowling.

World champion ruptures ligament A KNEE injury has put Spain’s Olympic, World and European badminton champion, Carolina Marino, out of action for up to six months.

The 25-year-old ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament during Sunday’s Indonesia Masters Final.

She was forced to retire in the opening game of the women’s singles final in Jakarta, gifting India’s Saina Nehwal the title.

According to the Spanish badminton federation, Marin underwent surgery this week and will shortly begin rehab for an injury which typi-

cally requires a recovery period of at least six months.

This means she faces a race against time to be fit to defend her title at the world championships in Basel, Switzerland in August.

Last year, Marin became the first female badminton player to win three World Championship titles. She has also won four European titles.

Remaining positive, she Tweeted: ‘Time to be ready for the hardest battle, but I have no doubts that I’ll be back stronger. Sometimes things like this happen… thanks for all your messages.’
