Cocaine cruise pensioners BRITISH expatriates, Roger, 72, and Sue Clarke, 70, have been arrested in Portugal after €2 million worth of cocaine was allegedly found in hidden compartments of their suitcases. Reports suggest the British couple were locked up in Lisbon, Portugal on December 4. Mr and Mrs Clarke were prominent residents in an expat community in Guardamar del Segura, Alicante and according to the British press, told friends in the community that Mr Clarke ran a lucrative fruit dealership. Locals also reported to a wellknown British publication that Mr Clarke had admitted in the past to a previous arrest and prison time for tobacco smuggling offences. Mr and Mrs Clarke had reportedly enjoyed a Caribbean cruise, before their arrest shortly after docking in Lisbon aboard
COCAINE CRUISE: British expat pensioners are well-known in Guardamar del Segura. the cruise ship MC Marco Polo. It is alleged that the Clarke’s former cleaner in Spain, Pauline Craven, also a British expatriate, was offered money and tickets for a Caribbean cruise if she and her husband agreed to take two ‘Caribbean’ designer suitcases to the United Kingdom to be sold for profit. Mrs Craven alleges that the Clarkes sacked her, shortly after she refused their offer.
Portuguese police obtained a search warrant for the Clarke’s cabin on the cruise ship. The British couple are now awaiting trial in Portugal following the alleged discovery of large quantities of cocaine in their luggage. The expatriate couple have denied these allegations and are reportedly adamant that the cocaine was planted in their suitcases.
