Firefighters welcome THE regional firefighting service has 26 new firefighters, bumping up the number to 42. In an official presentation at Mojacar’s Artisans’ Centre, Almeria Council Vice-President Javier A Garcia told the new firefighters: “Today is a day which will mark the rest of your lives, but also the future of the province and of the Levante, Almanzora and Los Velez areas, where you will work.” Mojacar mayor and Levante Fire Extinction Consortium President, Rosa María Cano underlined the extensive training the firefighters had undergone, saying they now had “the necessary preparation to save lives, put out fires and protect and
save people and belongings in difficult situations.” The mayor also praised the existing regional firefighting
team and staff for maintaining the service, which has been operating for 11 years in the Levante and for two in Albox, com-

for its financial support of the consortium. The new firefighters will be based in Turre and Albox, and from spring 2019 in HuercalOvera. The Levante Fire Extinction Service covers 48 municipalities and 162,000 residents.
