Firefighters welcome THE regional firefighting service has 26 new firefighters, bumping up the number to 42.

In an official presentation at Mojacar’s Artisans’ Centre, Almeria Council Vice-President Javier A Garcia told the new firefighters: “Today is a day which will mark the rest of your lives, but also the future of the province and of the Levante, Almanzora and Los Velez areas, where you will work.”

Mojacar mayor and Levante Fire Extinction Consortium President, Rosa María Cano underlined the extensive training the firefighters had undergone, saying they now had “the necessary preparation to save lives, put out fires and protect and

save people and belongings in difficult situations.”

The mayor also praised the existing regional firefighting

team and staff for maintaining the service, which has been operating for 11 years in the Levante and for two in Albox, com-

menting, “All the municipalities feel proud of this squad.”

Platform for Almeria’s best

City has become the first in Andalucia and only the third in Spain to have a digital collection box, allowing donations to be made by credit card or with a mobile.

Title nod THE Rey Alfonso III Brigade have awarded the mayors of Almeria and Viator the title of Legion of Honour for their collaboration and work with the legion, in a ceremony held on the Immaculate Conception holiday.

Fire stats THE emergency services dealt with 200 domestic fires in the province between January and November this year, a similar figure to 2017. November was the worst month, with firefighters called out to 30 house fires.

TOUR operators, holiday sector professionals and institutions came together last week for a provincial council-organised day of meetings to analyse Almeria’s potential as a cruise holiday destination.

Under discussion was the current cruise holiday model and the challenges for the province in attracting more visitors.

The day also provided the provincial tourism sector businesses with the opportunity to inform tour operators about services and attractions to take into account when designing cruise products.

“The growth our province has experienced in the cruise sector in recent years has been very important, but there still remains a long way to go,” said Almeria Council Vice-President Javier A Garcia.

“We have to consolidate a tourism product which condenses the province’s offer into the needs of cruise tourists.”

Port Authority President Mari Carmen Ortiz echoed the Vice-President’s views.

Organised by the Almeria Provincial Council and Almeria City Council, the five-day event staged in the provincial capital’s central Paseo de Almeria to coincide with the December 6 and 8 bank holidays was designed as a platform for promoting the best of provincial produce.

This year, 47 companies from all over Almeria took part. Provincial Agriculture Deputy Maria Lopez Asensio said they had demonstrated ‘the great quality and diversity which the province offers.’

The fair featured cooking demonstrations, workshops, music and entertainment, as well as opportunities to try produce including wines, beers, cheeses, olive oils, traditionally made bread, honey and hams.

Life and death THIS photograph of people rescued off the coast of Spain has won an international photography competition which comes as the world marks International Migrants Day this Tuesday.

The image of migrants stood huddled in blankets aboard the NGO Proactiva Open Arms rescue boat comes from Argentinian photographer Juan Medina’s Life and Death in the Mediterranean series.

It was chosen by a panel as the winner of the 22nd Luis Valtueña International Humanitarian

Photography Award, organised by the Doctors of the World global health NGO. Doctors of the World said in a statement the panel chose Medina’s photograph because of its ‘exceptional visual impact’ and ‘expressive force.’

The image was captured last August after the Open Arms vessel picked up the migrants in the central Mediterranean after they sailed from Libya. It was taken shortly before the ship arrived at the port of Algeciras in southern Spain.

Jobless rate drops THE provincial jobless dropped last month, according to national government figures.

The number of people registered as out of work in Almeria at the end of November was down by 1,332 on the previous month, or 2.25 per cent, to a total of 57,809.

This was 2,493 less unemployed than in the same month of 2017, or an inter-annual decrease of 4.17 per cent.

By sector, unemployment in ser-

vices went down by 1,072 people and by 170 in agriculture, while in industry and construction there were small increases.

By age, the November fall in the number of jobless was mainly among over-25s. Nevertheless, there was also a dip in youth unemployment of 379 people and a reduction of 629 in relation to November last year, or an inter-annual decrease of 12 per cent to 4,571 under-25s out of work.

Drug-related murder GUARDIA CIVIL made five arrests in connection with a murder believed to be drug-related.

The detentions in Paterna del Rio in the Alpujarras were part of Operation Primales, launched when the victim’s sister reported his disappearance.

Interviews with family, friends and colleagues revealed he had been in a fight in a property in the town the night before he went missing. The property was unlived in, but officers found blood on the floor

and hunting rifle bullet cartridges, and indications the property had been used as an indoor marihuana plantation.

A search of the area from the air and by officers on foot and on motorcycles led to the discovery of the victim’s body 48 hours later on a hillside. An autopsy revealed he had been shot.

Other charges against the five included illegal possession of arms and cultivation and production of drugs.

Final curtain THE Aquelarre Theatre Company with their production of Neil Simon’s Murder by Death brought down the final curtain on the month-long theatre season organised by Mojacar local authority and the Almeria Provincial Council.

Named after an old theatre in Mojacar, which was the first in the province, Aquelarre is currently made up of 60 amateur actors, and is a fully-fledged company with set and costume designers, make-up artists and lighting technicians, all of them local and working under the direction of Joaquin Saez and Eliseo Martinez.

A relatively new company, it has already performed six different plays throughout the province, including Indalo, an

Aquelarre is non-profit, and all the box office proceeds are ploughed back into the running of the group, although it does have additional

support from Mojacar Council.

The company has a lot of future projects in the pipeline, including a new play and short film, and dreams one

day of opening the doors to Mojacar’s very own theatre.

Aquelarre will next tread the boards on Saturday as part of Mojacar’s Christmas programme.

Skip debut UPDATED: The modern rubbish skips will ‘improve the environment and image of the town’, according to Vera mayor Felix Lopez.

NEW style rubbish skips are making their debut in Vera.

The Almanzora Levante Rubbish Collection Consortium in collaboration with Vera Council is replacing the old style skips throughout the municipality with 300 modern models, which Mayor Feliz Lopez said ‘will improve the environment and image of the town.’

The mayor maintained his administration is committed to keeping Vera clean, pointing to the €450,000 the council has recently invested in a new contract for cleaning, maintenance and gardening in public areas with a view to improving the service, especially along the coast.

The new kind of skips will also be introduced into other municipalities as part of the rubbish collection consortium’s modernisation plan.

Council backed animal rescue A NEW animal shelter in Huercal-Overa will soon be functioning, the local council said.

Works on the Municipal Animal Shelter should be completed within weeks and ready to take in abandoned dogs at the beginning of next year. The centre is on a 200sqm plot, and will have 26 kennels with patios for adult dogs and puppies.

There will be an office, storeroom, washing and disinfection clinic and an area for the dogs to play.

The works will be carried out by the Public Works and Services department and funded by the local authority.

“This is a commitment by the government to find a solution to the problem of abandoned dogs in our municipality,” said HuercalOvera mayor Domingo Fernandez.

He said the aim was to offer a decent shelter to the animals, adding “we are very happy about how the facility has turned out and thanks to everyone’s work we will be up and running at the beginning of the year.”

He also reported the council works with animal associations like APA Nueva Vida, with which his administration is currently working on an agreement to carry out controls of feral cats.

Xmas push A DELEGATION from Almeria City Council promoted the provincial capital as the ideal Christmas holiday destination at a two-day event for more than 500 travel agents in Madrid, highlighting the tourist, cultural and leisure offer.

Faiths united THE Catholic and Anglican churches came together in Mojacar to celebrate the Christmas time Festival of Nine Lessons.

Followers of both faiths gathered for readings in Spanish and English, and to sing British and Spanish Christmas carols with the participation of Mojacar’s Escalamo and Embrujo Mojaquero choirs.

The celebration was officiated by the Mojacar Santa Maria Catholic Church parish priest, Miguel Jose Esteban Jerez, and the Reverend Vincent Oram

from the San Pascual de Costa Anglican Church.

Coming together THE international community in Mojacar came together for the Dames in Spain fundraising carol concert and Christmas Fair, now a traditional

festive season event.

The Mojacar Municipal Band opened the event at the Artisans’ Centre in Mojacar village with a selection of old

and new Spanish carols, before the Dames took to the stage to sing carols from the British Christmas tradition.

gifts, cakes and mince pies, and there was also a tombola and raffle, with prizes donated by local businesses.

Dames President, Carol Threlfall, thanked all those who turned out for this, one of the association’s main fundraising events, proceeds this year going to the MACS cancer support association, the Stepping Stones carers’ support group, and to Equinac, a nonprofit making marine life rescue organisation.

She also thanked Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano for attending, along with Councillor María Luisa Perez, who acted as interpreter for the donation presentations.

Mojacar Council works together with the Dames in Spain on many of the association’s charitable activities. A group of more than 60, mostly British, women, the Mojacar-based Dames in Spain has for three decades devoted a great deal of time and effort to organising activities throughout the year with the aim of donating the proceeds to deserving causes.

Santa spreads Christmas magic

SANTA: Assisted by the ‘Grinch’ and elf Yisel Valiente listened to the children’s Xmas wishes.

THERE was some real Christmas magic at the Desert Springs golf resort over the weekend.

Santa Claus, assisted by translating elf Yisel Valiente, brought Christmas to life for nearly 130 childrenat with a special event held at the resort’s El Torrente restaurant.

After an impressive entrance, arriving in a customised golf buggy ‘santamobile,’ Father Christmas listened to the youngsters’

Festive Season wishes and gave out gifts in his ‘authentic’ Santa’s grotto.

Grown-ups also got into the Christmas spirit, browsing the jewellery, crafts and cards at the craft market and enjoying mulled wine and mince pies.

This is the ninth year Desert Springs has staged the event, which has now become a firm favourite on the Christmas calendar.

Brit teen in club death AN inquest has found that a teenager died on holiday in Spain after finishing his A-Levels, having taken a ‘substance’ at a 16-hour rave in ‘unbearable heat.’

Alex Masterton, 19, from North Thoresby in Lincolnshire, died at the Elrow club in Barcelona in July 2017.

The inquest into his death last Thursday, concluded it was due to ‘misadventure’ after he took an unnamed substance.

Alex was a popular student who was just weeks away from starting a biomedical science degree at Newcastle University, but became disorientated and distressed in the sweltering heat of the club.

According to his friends, Alex had

Bullfighter Franco bar fury PICTURES and footage of a Spanish bullfighter smiling and giving a thumbs up in front of memorabilia of former dictator Francisco Franco have led to a social media backlash.

Social media users took to Twitter to express their anger after the video from Fran Rivera went viral online this week.

Rivera, who received official honours for his bullfighting career, panning his camera around the Bar Casa Eladio in Alvia in the Castilla y Leon region.

He then smiles and gives a thumbs up in front of the Spanish flag from the Franco era.

Bar Casa Eladio also posted pictures of Rivera posing with staff members on Facebook, but have now been removed.

Social media users criti-

cised the bullfighter for the video in a series of tweets and posts.

Secretoy Verde said: “For me Fran Rivera symbolises everything old, dark, outdated, tacky and illiterate about this country.”

“Fran Rivera, a mobile with internet and a Franco Bar. What could go wrong?”

Rivera was previously married to a Spanish duchess before they divorced in 2002 and he remarried in 2013. He retired from bullfighting in 2017.

Civil servant in drugs bust A SPANISH civil servant has been arrested for allegedly spearheading a major drugs ring in the Campo de Gibraltar.

The council worker is believed to have used his respectable day job as a cover for his nocturnal activities which saw up to 62,000 kilos of hashish brought to the country each year.

The suspect is one of 57 people arrested in so-called Operation Albarraxin, a sweeping investigation which has led to the seizure of 10 tons of drugs and recovered more than €3.3 million worth of goods.

Terrorist caught A HIGH-PROFILE Spanish terrorist has been arrested in Brazil after 24 years on the run.

Carlos Garcia Julia, one of the five men responsible for the 1997 Atocha massacre in Madrid, was arrested in Sao Paulo by the Brazilian Federal Police.

Garcia Julia, a former member of the far-right group Fuerza Nueva, was sentenced to 193 years in prison in 1980 for murdering three lawyers with links to the communist party at a labour office on January 24, 1977 at 55 Calle Atocha.

The terrorists also left four others seriously injured.

The fugitive served 14 years in prison in Spain until 1994 when he was granted temporary parole to apply for a job in Paraguay.

Garcia Julia then used a legal loophole to avoid returning to Spain, instead going on the run in South America where he received further convictions for other crimes, including drug trafficking.

A TWENTY-ONE-YEAROLD man from Las Palmas, has developed a microchip the size of a grain of rice, which can be implanted in humans.

Through his company, Overloadd, Juan Melo has configured and marketed the microchip, which costs almost €90.

In Spain there are around 100 people with microchip implants, while in Sweden the figure is about 3,000.

The chips can be used to store files, photos and other important information.

Melo has defended his invention from the criticism of those with dystopian concerns, saying that there is no danger and that he is ‘helping people.’

The microchips, implanted under the skin, are also believed to have the capacity to help with the forgetting of passwords, opening car doors and other everyday tasks.

Academics from Canada studied incomplete hand images with missing fingers, found at two sites in Spain along with others from across the world for their study on the art.

A Cross-cultural Perspective on Upper Palaeolithic Hand Images with Missing Phalanges, published in this month’s Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology, claims the images came from hands where fingers were deliberately removed.

Academics Brea McCauley, David Maxwell and Mark Collard, of Simon Fraser University, said the reasons for amputation could have been religious or ritualistic. Previous studies claimed the images were made for counting and signalling purposes.

“The scenario which best fits the rock art hand images is removal of finger segments during life in order to appeal for supernatural assistance,” the researchers said.

“This has potentially interesting implications for social life in the Upper Palaolithic because traumatic religious rituals have been found to foster strong interpersonal bonds among group members and hostility towards members of other groups,” the academics added.

Researchers studied images of hands with missing fingers from the Fuente del Trucho site in Aragon and that of Maltravieso in Extremadura. They were among sites from across 121 prehistoric societies’ sites across the world.

The Upper Palaeolithic era

refers to the period between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago which is classed as the final part of the Stone Age. Art-making became increasingly popular as humans began to settle at more permanent sites, with the era ending after the onset of the farming.

BREXIT BRIEF TWO Brexit court cases have made headlines this week, with one a ruling on how Britain could rejoin the EU, and another concerning a case launched by expatriates in Spain.

The European Court of Justice in Strasbourg (ECJ) ruled Britain could theoretically call off Brexit and rejoin the EU with the permission of its other member states.

Separately, the pro-remain Bremain in Spain group, said it was mulling an appeal against a British High Court ruling on the legality of the referendum.

The court ruled against the group’s appeal made on the grounds of alleged illegal campaign practices from the Vote Leave group.

Bremain in Spain chairperson Susan Wilson said: “For this court to let this matter pass indicates a shocking level of tolerance of illegal behaviour in our democratic process.”

By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S Prime Minister is set to travel to Brussels for talks with EU officials and member state leaders today (Thursday) after being forced to cancel Monday’s Brexit vote in parliament.

Theresa May met with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday to garner support for changes to the current Withdrawal Agreement agreed last month.

European Council President Donald Tusk said the EU would not renegotiate, including on the Northern Irish backstop, but was willing to find ways to help get the deal through parliament.

“We are willing to discuss how to facilitate British ratification. But as time is running out, we will also discuss our preparedness for a no-deal scenario,” Tusk said.

The Northern Irish backstop continues to be the main sticking point for the deal.

The backstop is designed to prevent a hard border or customs checks between Ulster and the Republic, in the event that future EU-Britain trade talks break down.

THE value of the pound fell to €1.10 on Monday, its lowest level in almost two years, after British Prime Minister Theresa May announced she would delay a vote in Parliament on her Brexit deal.

Catalan tensions

By Joe Gerrard TENSIONS over Cataluña appear to be developing once again after Quim Torra, the region’s pro-independence president, called for Cataluña to follow the ‘Slovenian way’ to secession.

It comes as the ongoing holding of pro-independence figures in prison in connection with last year’s secession push continues to draw ire from those sympathetic to their cause.

The independence issue more generally now appears firmly entangled with other political issues including the government’s budget proposals which also made headlines this week.

Torra said after visiting Slovenia, which gained independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991 following a 10-day war, that there was ‘no way back’ on the road to freedom.

“The Slovenians decided to push ahead with all the consequences. Let’s do the same as them and let’s be willing to do anything to live freely,” Torra said.

Celaa added officials would not rule out reinstating Article 155 in the region. The constitutional mechanism was last used after the failed independence declaration to suspend the region’s autonomy and impose direct rule on Cataluña.

cialista (PSOE) faces a problem in handling Torra because the support of pro-Catalan independence members of Spain’s parliament is needed to pass the government’s budget.

The extent to which the two issues have become intertwined was evident in comments from leftist Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias, Sanchez’s ally in the Congress of Deputies.

He called for Torra to rethink his Slovenia remarks while also asking him to support the budget. “The budget is not a panacea but it will benefit many citizens in Cataluña and Spain,” Iglesias said.

Iglesias added the budget’s success would provide a ‘common roadmap’to work towards ‘pluri-nationality’ for Spain.

WOW support for worthy cause THE Women on Wednesdays group (WOW) has made a handsome donation to Enable, a voluntary group helping people living with the effects of a life-changing condition, and their carers.

The money will go towards the equipment which Enable uses to improve the physical and mental well-being of the people

Sue explained that Enable is open to ‘anybody who feels challenged’ due to a life-changing illness or accident, and the people who look after them.

Free of charge and for any nationality, Enable uses fitness,

yoga and Pilates to help improve balance, mobility, flexibility and strength, and mental agility.

Carers are welcome to join in the Wednesday morning onehour sessions in a hall next to Turre football ground, provided free by the local council, or they

can have an hour for themselves.

“This group helps you meet people, and gives you a feeling of belonging somewhere as well.”

Ins and out of the Padron Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

IN simple words, the padron is a local certificate that you are given when you register at your town hall. In Spanish it is called ‘certificado de empadronamiento,’ and helps compile a list of those people who live in a municipality.

The padron is used by the government and local authorities to keep a ‘head count’ on how many people live in the area, and as such receive financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and central authorities for the provision of services.

Anyone who lives for more than six months in Spain is required to register on the padron. However, the certificate itself only lasts for a limited period of time, and must be renewed. A handy website is: www.spanishsolutions.net/of ficial-documents-in-spain/padron To register on the padron you need: Your passport, Your NIE or residence certificate, The deeds to your house or a copy of your rental agreement, A recent utility bill in your name.

To add someone onto your padron, as it must contain all occupants, you will need: • Title deeds of the property, • The passports of both parties, and copies, • A utility bill, • Both certificates of residence, • Rental agreement (if renting and not residing with owner).

Since you need the padron certificate to become a Spanish resident, but you cannot give the padron office your residency until you apply for it, the padron offices usually give a set period to return and present your Spanish residency. In the Alicante Province, for example, it’s three months. To find out more, visit: www.gov.uk/guidance-requirements-in-spain.

Padron holders have the right to vote in local elections.

Residents who can demonstrate a specified time on the padron, can also receive benefits or a cash grant when getting married to another resident, or could qualify for financial assistance for any children born in Spain.

The traffic department of Spain, require a padron to register a car in your own name, to import a car from another country, to qualify for a Spanish driver’s licence, and in some cases to purchase mobile phones or electrical goods.

Knife threat raiders N AT I O N A L P O L I C E i n E l c h e have arrested two Spanish nationals - aged 44 and 51 - in connection with allegedly stealing a car at knifepoint.

A f t e r t a k i n g t h e c a r, t h e y drove to Murcia where they proceeded to rob two tobacconists... and then returned with the car to Elche where they dumped the vehicle and set fire to it.

It has taken since May to find the culprits after they approached a woman, who had just parked up her car, with a large knife. They demanded the keys before quickly fleeing the scene in the car.

When they arrived in Murcia, they intended to rob a business as it was about to open, but the owner became suspicious when they spotted the two men wearing gloves and balaclavas in a car.

They then targeted another business but this time managed to get away with €3,000 in cash and around €2,000 of tobacco.

A COSTA DEL SOL mayor has spoken out after she was threatened with death online by someone critical of the local council’s alleged double standards over street sellers.

Funegirola mayor Ana Mula said she thought the man, who made the threats using a false Facebook profile, did not grasp what he was doing. A suspect has since been arrested in connection with the comments.

“I feel a little sorry. But it is one thing to express an opinion and quite another to be insulting,” Mula said.

The mayor reported the comments to police after they appeared on a viral video in which police officers were questioned about allegedly racially discriminating in favour of black street sellers.

“Mula we know where you live. Either stop the fine for the man with the roses or we’re going to have to visit your house and you’re not going to like it,” the user said.

The whole hog LOCALS in Torrox, Axarquia, were left dumbfounded after a wild boar found its way into the quiet mountain town, roaming through the streets and even making its way up and down steps.

The boar, which experts be-

lieve was around three years old, evaded capture for two hours, before a group of hunters and volunteers from the local Proteccion Civil were able to capture the animal.

The runaway was cornered in car park where experts tranquilised and lassoed it before returning it to the countryside.

Sources told one publication boars rarely travel so high up into the mountains, and usually remain near Torrox’s river.

New capital key for ECB THE European Central Bank would have to reduce its holdings of Spanish, Italian and French government bonds by nearly €90 billion if it strictly follows its new shareholder base, recent data calculations reveal.

The ECB started to buy government debt in 2015 in a bid to revive inflation in the euro zone, with a pledge to divide up its holdings in proportion to how much capital each country had

paid into Frankfurt’s coffers.

Four years and €2 trillion later, the ECB has deviated significantly from this so-called capital key, with Greece and Cyprus being excluded from the programme and a scarcity of bonds to buy in other countries.

Italy, Spain and France, which have large stocks of public debt, picked up most of the slack, and ended up with some €36 billion, €28 billion and €24 billion worth of debt on the ECB books

EUROPEAN UNION finance ministers have struck a deal on a major reform of banking rules, addressing some of the loopholes exposed by the global financial crisis.

The overhaul, proposed by the European Commission in November 2016, sets the level of buffer banks must raise to absorb losses, and introduces new capital requirements to strengthen financial stability.

Under the reform, European banks will have to abide by a

new set of standards aimed at keeping their lending in check and ensuring they have stable funding sources.

Some technical details need to be finalised by the end of the year, with talks ongoing.

The agreement comes after two years of discussions and adapts EU rules to deals reached at a global level with US and Japanese regulators, although the draft deal agreed includes tweaks to global standards and a number of waivers.

SPANIARDS will spend an average of €180 on toys and video games at Christmas, on popular platforms such as Amazon, eBay and AliExpress, according to a study carried out by digital marketing agency Elogia.

Phone focus THE Vietnemese retail giant Vingroup, the country’s biggest private-sector company, has acquired a 51 per cent stake in the Spanish handset manufacturer BQ, and Vingroup plans to produce some five million phones a year.

Renewing relations SPAIN’S Ambassador to Romania, Manuel Larrotcha Parrada, has met with Romania’s Deputy Prime Minister Ana Birchall with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations in a range of areas.

Birchall said: “We discussed the current state and prospects for the Romanian-Spanish relationships under the strategic partnership between the two countries, with emphasis on developing and deepening economic co-operation.”

She added that when holding the six-month rotating Presidency of the EU Council starting January 1, 2019, Romania will focus on promoting the principle of cohesion, with Spain one of the biggest beneficiaries of the approach.

“The Common Agricultural Policy and the Cohesion Policy are successful at EU level, and we count on Spain for support in the future financial framework,” said Birchall.

FINANCE, BUSINESS & LEGAL SPANISH banking group Santander is planning to target the ultra-wealthy as part of a three-year expansion strategy.

The expansion will be led

by Santander Private Wealth, a new unit created to combine its private banking and asset management operations.

The bank plans organic growth instead of takeovers to meet its goals, and has hired 30 people for the unit this year.

Santander wealth management chief Victor Matarranz said: “The reason these clients are so important is that they are normally families who can make a great impact in their community.

“They are owners of companies, they create a lot of jobs and a lot of wealth. And they need a single point of contact where they have all these needs solved.”

The banks aims to lure the ultra-wealthy in Brazil and Mexico, leveraging its existing presence in Latin America.

O2 offers customers credit TELEFONICA-OWNED mobile operator O2 has said it will compensate its customers following a day of disruption to its data networks.

Pay monthly customers will be credited with two days of monthly airtime subscription charges in January.

Pay As You Go customers will get 10 per cent credit on a top-up and Pay As You Go mobile broadband users will get 10 per cent off a Bolt On Purchase, in the new year.

O2 issued a joint apology with mobile network supplier Ericsson for the shutdown.

The compensation for Pay Monthly customers includes SMB business and mobile broadband users.

O2 has 25 million users and also pro-

vides services for the Sky, Tesco, Giffgaff and Lycamobile networks, which have another seven million users.

Many customers reported that they could neither make calls or send texts during the crisis.

Services such as bus timetable information were also affected, while many businesses faced disruption.

Ericsson is carrying out a ‘complete and comprehensive root cause analysis,’ of the problem.

O2 is owned by Spain’s Telefonica and has the UK’s largest mobile network after EE, which is part of BT.

Times they are a-changing...

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AFTER living back in the ol’ country for the past few weeks, I can quite categorically assure you that the never-ending assault on the UK culture and traditions is alive, well and continues unabated to obliterate everything our ancestors fought, breathed and died for.

It’s not only the rising immigrant population (280,000 from outside the EU so far this year). It is the ‘snowflakes’ and PC brigade which I find most unacceptable.

Just recently an MP was taken to task for calling some of his staff ‘girls’. Apparently, to some PC bunch or another, this was considered ‘a frightening combination of sexism, ignorance and nepotism’ and decreed that the adult female gender should only be referred to as women!

According to another lot, ‘husband and wife’ should be replaced by ‘partner and spouse’. This of course would entail rewriting the history books, large chunks of the Bible, Shakespeare and our time-honoured sacred marriage vows.

The vegan lot are also predictably regaling in the indecisive and rudderless journey the UK is experiencing at this time. They want us all to eat lettuce

ATTACK: Veganism is an attack on our cultural values. and ban just about every reference to meat and carnivores, including such innocuous phrases as ‘bringing home the bacon.’ They also suggested that residents should change a village called ‘Wool’ to ‘Vegan Wool.’ You really couldn’t make it up.

If only some of these sad people would direct their energy into preserving the values and traditions of the country which nurtured them, we may stand more of a chance against those who would

seriously change it forever.

Those akin to the PC Lord Mayor of Bristol, who removed two Gainsboroughs from her office because it depicted links to the slave trade. One was replaced by the picture of a lion and the other, a portrait painted by a local artist, of a black woman Henrietta Lacks. (No, me neither!)

Or the mayor of London, who has banned all advertising hoardings on the London underground de-

picting bikini clad females. (What next, skirts around the legs of grand pianos?)

Our language is also under constant attack. ‘Th’ is rapidly becoming replaced by ‘f,’ and ‘g’ by the letter ‘k’. Nuffink and Somefink are prime examples.

But to me, the most telling example of the capitulation of those in authority to the less linguistic educated, was the decision to allow the voiceover presenter to leave out the letter ‘t’ in the recent I’m A Celebrity programme. This had to be a deliberate decision by the producers and ensured that, over the next few weeks, millions of viewers would constantly hear the word celebrity pronounced celebri’y. I dunno.

Perhaps it’s me! Bring back those wonderful old English words already lost in the mists of time.

Snollygoster. A man of intelligence but no principles. Ultracrepidarian. One who has many opinions on subjects they know nothing about. Grumbletonians. Those unhappy with government. Hugger Muggers. Those indulging in secret behaviour.

Cockalorium. Small man with a big opinion of himself. Callipygian. Having a beautiful well shaped butt.

Odd that. Apart from the last one, they all sound perfectly descriptive of me!

Why didn’t he just email them?

JOHN ALLEN CHAU: The 26-year-old Christian missionary’s actions led to his demise.

Barry Duke THERE are five irreversible routes out of this world; going to sleep in perfectly good health then waking up dead, having a fatal accident, being dispatched by a deadly disease, getting murdered or committing suicide.

Given a choice, I would opt for the first, as would most people.

But again, like most folks, those who survive me would be absolutely mortified if my death were ever to qualify for a Darwin Award.

If you’re not familiar with this scheme, let me explain that it was set up some years ago to ‘commemorate those who improve our gene pool’, by removing themselves from it!

The biggest bother I ever landed myself in, happened in 2005 after I wrote of having nominated an American pastor for the award.

Rev Kyle Lake, 33, stepped into

a baptismal font at University Baptist Church in Waco, Texas, reached for a microphone, bellowed ‘surprise me God’, and was electrocuted.

I suggested that taking an electronic gadget into water was one of the dumbest things anyone could

possibly do, and that Kyle was fully deserving of a Darwin Award.

That report sparked a lot of hate mail. I was described as callous, cold-hearted and mindless of the feelings of his family.

But what made me truly regret publishing the piece was the fact

that I later discovered the microphone wasn’t the cause of his death. What killed him, was the font’s faulty heating system.

A lawsuit was brought against the company which installed the baptistry heaters. It was found to have been negligent in their design and installation, and his family was awarded undisclosed damages.

This November I again suggested a Darwin Award for another godly geezer. But this time I took no flak from readers who were all of one mind: Christian missionary John Allen Chau, 26, had absolutely no business illegally trespassing on the protected Indian-owned North Sentinel Island.

On his first attempt to introduce Jesus to the islanders, an arrow was shot at him (the Sentinelese don’t react well to strangers). The arrow pierced his Bible and he legged it, but foolishly he returned to yell at the inhabitants, and throw fish at them.

This time a volley of arrows sent him into the hereafter.

Before his fatal body-piercing, Chau left no doubt that he was not only stupid, but arrogant to boot.

In his diary he wrote ‘Lord, is this island Satan’s last stronghold, where none have heard or even had the chance to hear your name?’

This is the trouble with missionaries. They automatically assume that anyone who doesn’t share their superstitious beliefs must be ‘Satanic’ and in need of ‘saving.’

It’s a mindset which has led to the ethnocide of millions who were doing pretty darn well until they were introduced to Christianity.

When I posted my report on Facebook, one of many pithy responses came from a fella called Frank O’Callaghan, who wrote: ‘Condolences to his loved ones.

An unnecessary, violent and sad death of a deluded but presumably well-meaning young man.

‘He could have brought devastating disease to such an isolated group. This was just what most ‘missionary’ activity is; self-indulgence, arrogance and ignorance.’

Amen to that, I say.

Why not be sensible?

Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LOVE my TV. I enjoy movies, a few soaps, TV series - American and English - and I watch them through a little IPTV box which goes through the internet.

I also have apps on my phone which allow me to watch certain programmes. What confuses me is why I can’t do what I used to do and subscribe to Sky and watch everything I want like I used to.

I’d happily pay. I don’t want it for nothing. I’m paying now, so why don’t companies like BBC, ITV etc. allow us to watch their programmes here? It’s so annoying to be on my phone looking at some app like Twitter and when I go to watch a video clip, up comes a message saying ‘not available in your country.’ It’s a clip for goodness sake, and I’m going to watch it anyway because I have a VPN. Google it.

When will these geniuses realise that they can’t stop anybody watching anything they want? So instead of trying to block everything, make it all legitimate and charge a sensible fee, like Netflix do, make life easier and earn some money at the same time.

This week a group called PETA - an animal rights group - and, by the way, I have to say I love

animals and would never knowingly hurt one with the exception of the odd mozzy or fly, oh and cockroaches - have decided we can’t say things like ‘flogging a dead horse’, ‘take the bull by the horns’ or ‘kill two birds with one stone.’

Instead, the group advises we try saying, ‘feed two birds with one scone.’ I am officially calling bull**** on all this nonsense.

I may have mentioned this before, but how difficult is it, for a mega size company to just have someone answer the phone and ask how they can direct your call. It’s bad enough in England but here in Spain it’s a nightmare if, especially like me, you don’t speak that much Spanish.

My phone provider used to have a very easy system that worked fine. You dialled 123 and you were instantly offered the option to simply press two for an English-speaking operator. It was that easy, but not any more. They have changed the whole system and now it’s so complicated. Why change it? It was simple and it worked.

Now, I have to dial a different number and then get given countless other options which I don’t understand because they’re in Spanish and then there’s the dammed music. Listen guys, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

Well that’s my rant this week. I’m off to the bar down the road to have a ploughpersons’ lunch.

PILGRIMAGE: People walk for days, weeks and months.

by Migel Jayasinghe SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA is a city in the province of Galicia in northwestern Spain. It is where the world famous cathedral, Santiago de Compostela of the Roman Catholic faith, has stood for over a thousand years.

There are many interpretations of the word Compostela. It was presumed that the word meant ‘field of stars,’ but it is now discounted with a preference for an etymological explanation favouring either ‘burial ground’ or a ‘well composed’ site.

The origin of this cathedral is shrouded in myth, but unarguably it has been the favoured destination of Christian pilgrims from practically all over the world since mediaeval times. Pilgrims are known to have walked, cycled, ridden horses or donkeys, to arrive at the cathedral, which can take weeks, months or even longer, depending on the place of origin.

There are of course many paths to Santiago, depending on where one begins the pilgrimage (usually one’s home), but as one nears the destination, the most popular path is Via Regia, leading to the French Way, or Camino Frances. While the cathedral was declared one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in 1985, the path was named the first European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe in 1987.

Although St James was martyred in Jerusalem, his body was said to have been shipped to the Iberian Peninsula by his disciples, since a large part of his missionary work was reportedly conducted there. It was not until AD 813 when a bright star guided a shepherd to the site that the bishop of Iria, Teodomiro, learned of the burial site.

HOLY: The cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. be that of the apostle James, notifying King Alfonso II (Asturias) of the find, who initiated the building of the cathedral on the spot. Many miraculous events are said to have occurred here which, it is believed, empowered the Spanish Catholics to fight off the Moors and maintain their hegemony over northern Spain.

The bishopric of Iria was within the Kingdom of Asturias and the remains were accepted as those of St James by the Pope and Charlemagne. However, it was the 1884 Bull of Pope Leo XIII Omnipotens Deus, which formally declared the authenticity of the relics.

From 10th century onwards the settlement at Santiago de Compostela, main-

ly following the patronage of bishop Diego Gelmirez, became one of the main centres of Christian pilgrimage, second only to Rome and Jerusalem.

However, during the Napoleonic Wars, the settlement was captured and sacked by the French and the apostolic remains were lost for nearly a century, until rediscovered hidden in a cist (stone cof-

fin) in the basement of the cathedral.

Pilgrims from beyond the Pyrenees began arriving during the middle of the 10th century, while the earliest records of pilgrims arriving from England dates from 1092 to 1105. In the 12th century, Calixtus II initiated the Compostelan Holy Years. Whenever St James’ Day (July 25) falls on a Sunday, the cathedral declares a Holy or Jubilee Year.

Holy Years fall in five, six and 11-year intervals. The most recent were in 2004 and 2010. The next will fall on 2021 and 2027. The official guide to the cathedral city was then the Codex Calixtinus. The fifth book of the Codex, published around AD 1140, is still regarded as the original source for most modern guidebooks.

It is customary for pilgrims to have with them a pilgrims’ staff, or walking stick. It usually is taller than the pilgrim and has a hook to suspend belongings (not too heavy). A souvenir which pilgrims often carry away with them after their pilgrimage is a scallop shell.

There are many explanations for the custom. It was believed that the ship carrying St James’ body capsized off the coast of Spain and was lost, but the body washed ashore undamaged, covered in scallops. Another explanation is that the scallop was of practical use as a drinking vessel or as a makeshift bowl for eating.

It also acts as a metaphor, since the grooves of the shell come together at a single point representing the various routes travelled by the pilgrims culminating in the burial place of St James.

The scallop is also a metaphor for the pilgrim. Just as the ocean washes up scallop shells on to the shores of Galicia, God’s hand guides pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela.

Today, Santiago de Compostela is a favoured destination, for not only the faithful, but also for many sightseers and tourists from around the globe.

What happens when the famous person is Marie Antoinette, one-time Queen of France.

She was a royal lady renowned for suggesting that the poor ought to eat brioche, if bread were in short supply. Queen Marie Antoinette also owned famous jewels, famous now and also famous back in her own day more than two centuries ago.

A selection of these jewels long held by the Bourbon Parma family, came to market in November in Geneva, Switzerland in association with a total of 100 treasures and exercised an irresistible magnetic allure for collectors.

In these modern times, most did not travel to Sotheby’s Geneva, though bidders from 43 countries took part, with most registering their participation online.

Fully 25 per cent of the bidders were new to Sotheby’s, a further demonstration of the regal fascination of Marie Antoinette and jewellery with a Royal provenance or history.

These jewels have an extraordinary story. Before her arrest and subsequent execution, Marie Antoinette wrapped her pearls, diamonds and rubies, placed them in a chest and sent them to Brussels.

From there they were taken to Vienna, and in to the safekeeping of the Austrian Emperor, her nephew. The jewels were restored to Marie Antoinette’s daughter Madame Royal following her release.

The jewels in time passed on to the Bourbon Parma family with whom they remained for the next two centuries.

A ‘white glove sale’ is an auction where every lot or item in the sale is actually sold. A ‘white glove sale’ is not common. The sale at Sotheby’s Geneva was one such, every lot sold.

Bidders entered into a competition with a disregard for pre-sale estimates driving 90 per cent of prices in the sale beyond expectations.

The star lot was a natural pearl and diamond pen-

dant from Marie Antoinette’s personal collection.

Pre-sale estimates were US$1-2 million. In fact such was the competition, that a new auction record for a natural pearl was reached, with the final bid at US$36,165,090, leaving the initial estimate far behind.

The pendant was among 10 exquisite pieces which were once owned by Marie Antoinette, all of which attracted fierce competitive bidding. Together they realised US$42.7 million against a pre-sale estimate of US$1.6 million to US$2.9 million.

One of the most personal and intimate Lots in the sale, was a monogrammed diamond ring bearing the initial MA, for Marie Antoinette, and containing a lock of her hair. This precious ring was also the object of a fierce bidding competition selling for more than 50 times the pre-sale estimate of US$8,000 to US$10,000, finally realising US$447,000.

Meanwhile an exquisite diamond brooch supporting a yellow diamond also captured the attention of jewellery lovers and achieved an astounding US$2,099,793 against an estimate of US$50,000 to US$80,000.

What’s in a name? More than only a name, a reputation adds enormously to the appeal of treasure to all who are fascinated by jewels.

A jewel’s history, provenance and associations captures the heart, stirs the emotions and drives the impulse to acquire and collect. The perfect conditions for a ‘white glove sale’.

I READ with interest your coverage of the 40th anniversary of Spain’s Constitution and I felt compelled to write to you about democracy and its value.

As a man in my later years I still remember when General Franco ruled Spain. The country was poor and its people trampled upon while Franco and his cronies got rich and powerful at their own citizens’ expense.

On a slight aside, I was also particularly disturbed at Leapy Lee’s idea of sending so-called snowflakes to ‘bootcamps,’ which sounds suspiciously like another kind of camp that Franco was fond of sending his opponents to.

Spanish democracy has its problems but many people here will tell you they feel immensely lucky to have a Constitution that legally protects their rights.

Those who grumble about the often cumbersome nature of Spanish politics ought to remember the days when the Franco regime was ruthlessly efficient at suppressing the freedom of its people.

A pop at Vox I AM a retired British expat on the Costa del Sol and the sudden emergence of the far-right Vox party is another worrying sign of the times.

I knew hardline right-wing parties had been making ground in many other European countries, but for some reason I thought Spain was happily immune to it.

The future seems so uncertain and Vox needs to be put in its place before things get out of hand.

At least there are plenty of progressive, open-minded people here who will speak out and go on anti-fascist marches to let these people know that racism and prejudice have no place in the 21st century.

However you do not make it clear whether this is religion-based slaughtering for Jews and Muslims or a normal abbatoir. If normal, it is completely wrong but so is the Al Halal slaughter method, which is unfortunately allowed on religious grounds.

I HAVE asked the town hall several times to do something about this bin under our bedroom window.

Rubbish is constantly dumped. Any left outside the bins on a Friday will stay there at least until Monday. When we had heavy rain recently it travelled down the road until it rested against our car and dented it. People slam the lid at all hours as they drive past and drop their rubbish.

The new bins on the paseo maritimo are far quieter, why can’t we have similar ones in our street?

BRITAIN’S Prime Minister chose to put off the crunch parliamentary vote on Brexit this week and has admitted it would not have passed.

Theresa May told MPs on Monday she had decided to delay the vote on the EU Withdrawal Agreement to give her time to get more concessions.

But with EU officials saying they will not change the deal agreed only weeks ago, it seems unlikely May will get anything substantial out of yet another round of talks.

Opposition MPs, the Speaker of the House of Commons and even the Prime Minister’s Conservative colleagues did not take kindly to May’s decision. It has probably not won her many friends across the channel either.

The Prime Minister’s decision shows the Brexit deal is a compromise which pleases neither remainers nor leavers.

Given May’s red lines on free movement and other areas it is hard to see how she could have done much better.

Brussels’ priority in negotiations is not to pander to anti-immigration sentiments in Britain but to protect the EU, of which free movement is a cornerstone.

But ultimately the decision shows that May has either reached her nemesis moment or is at least on thin ice.

It seems as though there is no scenario that could please enough MPs to get parliamentary backing. This could be the twilight of May’s premiership.

But in the Stone Age severe injury to the fingers must have been fairly common, without having to invoke a ritual aspect to it. Capitalist through and through Many years ago my the owner of the firm I worked for bought a new Mercedes, it was £67,000. We never saw it parked in the yard and I found out that he felt guilty to show it as things were not going that well and some redundancies occurred. I recall thinking why? The car is a symbol of past success and employment. I would say to people I hope he gets two Mercedes, or a Rolls Royce. The better he did, the better the company was doing. Do we want the rich to take their money abroad? What you say here echoes my thoughts for many years. Thank you.

Richard Shanley IDRIS ELBA will return as DCI John Luther on New Year’s Day in the fifth series of the BBC One crime drama. Luther will air on successive nights, with the whole of the new four-part series showing between January 1 and 4 .

A recent trailer showed Elba’s Luther hunting down a masked killer and showcased new recruit DS Catherine Halliday, played by Wunmi Mosaku.

There was also a glimpse of Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan, despite her being apparently killed off previously. Fans will be delighted to see Elba don his tweed coat for the first time since the 2016 edition of Sport Relief. After the fourth series aired in 2015 there had been hopes it would spawn as a big-screen version, but a film never materialised.

Each episode of the new series will air at 22.00 CET on BBC One and iPlayer. The first episode will follow the festive edition of Doctor Who, which is being shown on January 1 instead of Christmas Day.

This latest research found a single bout of exercise boosted brain activity associated with reduced appetite, lower blood sugar and greater calorie burning, at the same time reducing activity linked to hunger and lower metabolism.

In the study, rats carried out three 20-minute treadmill runs before being tested.

Researchers said they believe the benefits discovered may last longer, the more a person trains.

Dr Kevin Williams, who led the study, claimed the results may explain ‘why many people don’t feel hungry after exercise.’

THE beauty industry has seen multiple trends come and go over the years, but the one which is here to stay will be the ‘Sub-Zero Waste’ movement, according to Mintel.

The zero waste philosophy is gaining momentum as more and more consumers are affected by natural disasters and dwindling natural water resources, says Mintel, the world’s leading market intelligence agency.

Better-informed consumers will no longer tolerate waste like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a direct consequence of years of indiscriminate abuse of single-use plastics.

According to Mintel, moving forward, focusing efforts on reducing packaging is not enough; there is far greater potential for ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking from manufacturers and brands at every stage of the beauty supply chain.

Over the next five years, the focus on sustainability will reach new heights around the world as environmentally conscious consumers look for ways to reduce waste in all aspects of their lives, including their beauty and personal care routines.

Brands which purposely create limited shelf-life products or encourage overconsumption, run the risk of consumer backlash.

Consumers will demand

that brands be more environmentally responsible and take accountability for their actions.

Sharon Kwek, Senior Innovation and Insights Analyst, Mintel Beauty and Personal Care, discussed how the ‘Sub-Zero Waste’ trend is set to influence the beauty and personal care industry worldwide: “‘Sub-Zero Waste’ is not just a trend; it’s a movement towards a ground-shaking new archetype for the beauty and personal care industry.

“Some companies are already discussing completely removing packaging from the equation.

“Whether reducing or

eliminating waste altogether, if brands don’t change their approach now, they will become insignificant. Brands which place current profits ahead of making the necessary investment in zero waste and sustainability will not be around in the future.”

She added, “We’re seeing that some indie brands have the upper hand with regard to sustainable beauty as they have built their business practices around ethics and environmentally friendly practices.

“Larger brands must adopt new practices in order to catch up with smaller, more nimble competitors.”

Music - A Force For Good?

U N B E L I E VA B LY, i t w a s o n l y i n t h e l a t e 5 0 ’s a n d early 60’s that true music legends like Little Richard, Sam Cooke and Chuck Berry were not allowed to stay in the same hotels in certain states and towns when touring America as their white backing musicians. Parents would ban their children from seeing their Rock ‘n’ Roll idols because they thought the younger generation would be corrupted, yet somehow the music survived these tests and has always brought people together.

The early 60’s saw an ex-

plosion o f white, often well educated, middle class musicians in London playing the blues. John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers led the British blues movement and had many future superstars come and go from its line-up.

Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood and many more all learned their trade playing the blues.

When I was at school in t h e l a t e 7 0 ’s t h e r e w a s a plethora of successful multi-racial bands. The Specials, UB40, The Beat and The Selecter to name but a few. We never gave it a second thought, to us it was just a bunch of blokes playing great music!

Pause to celebrate SO Christmas is nearly upon us and with any luck our preparations are almost complete, so we can sit back, relax and enjoy.

Well I hope you can anyway and trust we may all have a thoroughly happy and joyful time as we celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Here in Spain, where the emphasis, in public at least, seems to be far more on the visit of the Wise Men to the infant Jesus than on his actual birth, it can be difficult for us to enjoy what we remember as the traditional Christmas. Although many of us will do our best, we still miss all the decorations, the Christmas trees, the clear frosty nights, the carol-singers at the door or singing carols round the crib, the midnight service, and of course the turkey with all the trimmings.

But in many ways I find that being away from Britain, and thus having to make some extra effort to create that traditional atmosphere, can actually make it more real and thus more enjoyable. I often wonder if there are any groups out here who actually do go round the houses carol singing, but

if not, then of course there are several organisations holding carol concerts over the next few days, allowing us to satisfy our need for a good sing.

For some of us however there is a longing for a really traditional church carol service to help us truly worship the newborn King, similar to those we see on television, or remember from years past when we were younger.

So, for any who, like me, crave the traditional, the good news is that they’re readily available, with a Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Aljambra, Albox on Sunday at 6pm, another carol service at Llanos del Peral on Tuesday, also at 6pm and more reflective, Christmas Eucharists on Christmas Eve at 8pm at Llanos or 11.30 pm in Mojacar, where there will be another on Christmas morning at 11am.

But whether you are able to join us at one of these services or not, we pray that you will enjoy a very happy and truly blessed Christmas this year as we celebrate the coming of Christ.

WE have many books which we have turned to on regular occasions to help us in our quest here at Olive Tree Farm. One book which is a particular favourite is called Forgotten Skills of Cooking, by Darina Allen.

In the book it explains how to build both a hot smoker and a cold smoker.

Smoked Salmon is cold smoked, and we love it. But something I spotted the other day in the book really caught my attention. Hot smoking, on the hob, in the kitchen, using a wok!

I had to test it out. It sounded intriguing. After a quick trip out to grab a nice slab of fresh salmon, the challenge began. What was particularly interesting was what was used to smoke the fish with. You might be surprised to read that there is no need to try and get hold of wood chips; the things that you need, will more than likely already be in your cupboard.

So here is how I did it and can I add, it was absolutely delicious. The end result was a subtle smoky flavour with perfectly cooked succulent flesh.

Ingredients 450g thick salmon fillet cut into four chunks 3 tablespoons Demerara sugar 2 tablespoons crystal sea salt 225g uncooked rice 11 0 g t e a l e a v e s ( I j u s t ripped open about 20 one cup tea bags) Method Lay the salmon in a shallow dish and rub the fish all over with the two tablespoons of salt and two tablespoons of the sugar. Leave it to rest at room temperature for about half an hour.

Using long sheets of aluminium foil, line your wok making sure there is lots of foil overhanging the pan as you need to seal it completely to keep in the smoke. I used three long sheets.

Once your fish has rested, using paper towel, rub o ff a l l t h e s a l t a n d s u g a r and pat your fish gently so it is dry.

Put your rice, tea leaves and the remaining tablespoon of sugar in the foil covered pan and turn the hob to a high heat.

Wok Smoked Salmon leaves start to smoke, put a small wire rack in the pan.

Ideally you want the rack to be about 1.5� - 2� above the ric e . S it y o u r fis h o n t he rack. Cover with a tight fitting lid and then using the overhanging pieces of foil, tightly wrap them over the lid to seal in the smoke.

L e a v e th e h e a t o n h i gh for about 3-4 minutes and then turn it down to medium and continue to smoke it for around 12-15 minutes.

When cooked, leave to cool. I served it up as a sea food platter surrounded by green salad, lemon wedges and prawns. It would make a fantastic centre piece to any Christmas table.

This method can also be used for chicken breasts, minus the sugar. And if you can get hold of woodchips then they can replace the rice.

If you are lucky enough to have a metal biscuit tin with a tight fitting lid you can use this straight over the hob. Line the inside with the foil and place your rice or woodchips in the bottom, and again using a rack lay your fish or chicken on top of the rack once it is smoking and add the lid.

Cook for about 15 minutes on low heat. Leave to rest for at least 12-15 minutes before serving.

FED up of reading about the Brexit mayhem? Well, fortunately we have Emile Ratelband, the Dutch motivational speaker, entrepreneur and former daytime TV presenter I wrote about here recently, to keep us amused.

Emile, who claimed age discrimination if he wasn’t allowed to knock 20 years off his registered date of birth, must remain 69, otherwise - according to a Dutch court ruling - there would be ‘undesirable legal and societal implications’.

Finally, a sensible judgement on a daft, self-serving issue. (If Emile looked 20 years younger, this might have been worth the bother. Sadly he looks his age, but he got himself worldwide publicity which was probably the goal.)

So, a correct decision here putting an end to all sorts of ghastly implications regarding age of consent, underage sex etc.

Now, can we get judges to decide on the veganism issue currently doing the rounds? Then, let them get their teeth into gender reassignment of very young children in particular. Interestingly, it’s perfectly legal to change one’s sex, which also has significant ramifications. I could go on and on...

Some years ago my wife and I went to Alicante and applied for the old style ID card ‘residencia’. This was only valid for five years and we let it lapse. We never applied for the EU citizen paper certificate. Now we have decided to stay, so we need to renew. Can we just swap the old card for the new paper type or do we need to go through the whole process again?

Helping hands THE Almanzora Group of Friends lent a helping hand to the Albox branch of Caritas with the collection of food donations to go into Christmas parcels for the needy.

When Caritas, the Catholic Church’s official organisation in Spain for charity and social relief, approached the

group to see if it could help with the collections in large supermarkets, they said they would be delighted and immediately sent out a message to their members, who as always rose to the occasion.

Volunteers from the Almanzora Group of Friends said they thoroughly enjoyed working with the Spanish

volunteers with the collections in Mercadona and Lidl on Friday November 30 and Saturday December 1.

The group encouraged the public to think about joining in with the collections next year, also pointing out Caritas always needs clothes for the needy, and to look out for their red donation bins.

ALBOX & SURROUNDING AREAS Square transformed WORKS on the Plaza de España in Olula del Rio will transform the square into the heart of the Old Town, according to provincial Public Works Deputy Oscar Liria.

Almeria Provincial Council is investing €208,000 on improvements to the square and surrounding roads, which the administration said would also address parking problems in the area.

“With these works we will fill the zone with activity for the development of trade and local industry, and benefit all residents”, Liria said.

The deputy said the provincial council’s aim with projects like this is ‘to improve the quality of life in the province’s 103 municipalities.’

In the baking workshop in Zurgena, participants learnt how to prepare simple dishes and were given an introduction into technical vocabulary, basic utensils, kitchen hygiene, the correct way to handle food and cooking methods.

The English workshop was pitched at B1, or intermediate level, with students receiving instructions on how to tackle tests to gain the certificate.

The workshops were part of the Creative Experiences for Young People 2018 programme, aimed at giving local authorities in municipalities with populations of less than 20,000, the resources to meet young people’s training needs.

Like many of us these days, I have a congenital reluctance to delete. But if life is far too cluttered technologically, isn’t it time to do something about it?

WhatsApp is a notorious data-hog.

If you really do still need to be reminded what your sweetheart ate for breakfast four Januaries ago, at least delete the Weetabix photo that went with it. The same goes for Twitter.

CDs and DVDs of programs you’ll never use again? Computer accessories once cutting-edge but now just metal and plastic flotsam?

Old phones desk-drawered five contracts ago? Head for the charity shop, the old-gadgets collection bins or back to the dealers who are supposed to know what to do with this stuff.

Finally, close those accounts you thought you just couldn’t live without.

Trust me, you can. In fact, one of these days I’m even going to close my own MySpace account. Promise.

Folders. Or directories, for those of us still versed in earlier computing ways.

I’ve never known a computer storage mess which can’t be improved by simply creating folders and dragging stuff into them.

A thousand e-mails in the Inbox? Take time to create folders for their categories or senders, drag and drop till you, er, drop, and the unmanageable suddenly becomes manageable.

The same applies to photos, letters, documents, downloads and the rest of the digital detritus submerging us.

I could foresee that I was going to lose things out of said pocket unless I addressed the situation. I would have to sew something on the pocket to reduce its bagginess.

I don’t do sewing. I would rather tightrope walk into the jaws of Hell than sew something. But as tightropes are hard to come by, and Hell is closed for the weekend, I was going to have to sew.

With trepidation I rummaged around in the sewing box seeking Velcro; it

I located the Velcro, the book of needles and thread. I even found the gizmo that allows me to thread needles without loss of temper.

With extreme self-control, as I know that loss of temper anywhere near nee-

dles is not a good idea, I threaded a carefully selected needle, using the gizmo, of course.

I knotted the thread - it took me three goes. I cut a square of Velcro from the strip, took a deep breath, straightened the bag to take the executive decision where to sew on the Velcro: not an easy decision - both halves go on opposite sides, yet still have to meet!

I steeled myself ready to make the first stitch. I readied the needle for insertion.

It was at this point that I noticed the Velcro was selfadhesive!

Hallelujah! I am saved!

by Nick Fletcher ALL the major manufacturers want a slice of the compact SUV market and the contender from MercedesBenz is the GLA, which is based on its A-Class hatchback.

The GLA is 50mm taller than the A-Class and has styling revisions to give it a much more muscular appearance.

The swooping sculpted lines, gaping front grille with large Mercedes threepointed star badge and its potent-looking twin exhausts all add to its image and help it stand out from some of the more restrained designs in this SUV class.

GLA prices start from €28,281 (£25,105), and there are petrol and diesel o p t i o n s , 4 M AT I C a l l wheel-drive versions and sporty AMG models.

My featured model is the 200 SE with a 156hp 1.6litre turbo-petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox and is priced at €30,624 (£27,185).

U n d e r w a y, t h e G L A proves poised on the corners and while the suspension is quite firm, it doesn’t really impair the ride comfort.

Occupants front and rear get reasonable space, and the boot is a good size at 481 litres, though there is a high loading lip. While t h e r e a r s e a t s d o n ’t s l i d e forward to increase the boot c a p a c i t y, t h e y d o f o l d down.

Competitors in this crowded sector include formidable rivals such as the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3 but such is the status and kudos of the MercedesBenz badge, the GLA earns its place on the shortlist of any potential SUV buyer.

Citroen C5 Aircross SUV: Driving into new territory THE new Citroen C5 Aircross SUV is reassuringly versatile and will act as a flagship for the company.

The mid-range SUV market is a jungle of competing brands which seem to have less and less emotional connection with the buying public.

Citroen is only just entering into a saturated SUV scene which includes Mini, Fiat, Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin.

Ask people what Citroen stands

for and they are likely to say brittle dashboards, temperamental electrics and maybe some nostalgia for classics like the 2CV. However, despite the daunting field, the C5 acquits itself very well and as a cousin to the Peugot 3008 (part of the same PSA group), it has inherited an extremely well-engineered chassis.

Group PSA has striven hard to put the quality back into its products, and the C5 certainly feels more durable and solid than many

previous efforts.

It is refined and quiet, especially in the petrol version, but whichever you choose from the four engine options you will have an award-winning unit driving the front wheels, economical and powerful.

Despite the lack of a fourwheel drive option, electronics like ‘Grip Control’ and ‘Hill Descent Assist’ help with tricky terrains, as does the good ground clearance.

To add comfort, extra hydraulic stops have been added to the shock absorbers, while the nappa leather seats let you sink into them blissfully.

There are some impressively big and clear touchscreens for the sat-nav, audio and connectivity features too.

Only the controls for the adaptive cruise control seem old-fashioned now, rather than the now usual steering wheel buttons there is a separate pod behind the wheel, which is a little awkward.

Otherwise, the C5 is a more than agreeable place to spend time; it enjoys the typical high driving position and ease of access for people with mobility issues, and has the biggest boot in its class.

This model appears to have had some substantial engineering invested in it, and the styling is smart and classy.

Citroen has also given its flagship car what it calls ‘fair pricin’ and the base model is available for only €26,000.

The more powerful ‘PureTech180’ petrol model has an excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox, and is worth the extra money. Next year, Citroen celebrates its 100th birthday, and while it has a chequered history, the C5 Aircross shows shows there’s life in the old dog yet.
