Firework fury LOCALS in Malaga City took to social media on Sunday evening to complain of insensitivity after a cruise ship was spotted letting off fireworks after a day of heavy flooding. The Marella Spirit’s fireworks display began at around 11pm. Residents reported hearing loud bangs which some thought were the start of a thunder storm before seeing fireworks explode in the skies off the coast of the city. Some locals commenting on social media said the letting off of fireworks was inappropriate after floods ripped through the province and claimed the life of a firefighter. Twitter user Pipe Alonso said: “One more example that in Malaga anything goes. It is not the day or the time.” “It is not the day, or the hour after floods and a firefighter passing away,” said Andaluztv. Inmaculada Martinez said: “With such a storm we heard

Arson trial
PROSECUTORS have requested that a 55-year-old man set to be tried over allegations that he torched his ex-partner’s Malaga City apartment block be jailed for 17 years if found guilty. Prosecutors claimed the defendant had set fire to the block of flats, in the Plaza de las Flores, after his partner left him in February 2012. The fire that took place left the defendant’s expartner’s roommate with first and second degree burns covering 40 per cent of his body including his neck, throat and abdomen. The defendant’s ex-partner was not in the building at the time. The man was in hospital for three months as a result and had to have surgery and rehabilitation treatment. It took him more than seven months to recover.
The flat, on the fourth floor of the apartment building, sustained an estimated €6,335 worth of damage. Repairs to the building following the fire cost almost €30,000. Prosecutors have requested that the defendant be fined €6,335 to cover the damage to the flat if found guilty. They have also asked the court to order €13,072 in compensation from the defendant to his ex-partner’s injured roommate for his burns and €20,000 for later treatment. The defendant may also have to pay €2,400 to his ex-partner for the psychological impact of the fire. The case continues.
