Taking the fight to cancer By Tom Woods PREPARATIONS are on track so that by 2019 Torrecardenas hospital will have new cuttingedge technology which will enable it to provide high quality cancer treatment services. At the moment, around 1,000 patients in Almeria have to go to the Virgen de las Nieves hospital in Granada to undergo diagnostic tests. The hospital has state-ofthe-art PET-TAC equipment which proves a hybrid of Computerised Tomography (CT) Positron Emission tomography (PET) scanning. The technology has revolutionised cancer treatment and the Minister of Health of the Junta de Andalucia, Marina Alvarez Benito, has announced that Torrecardenas hospital will be receiving its
new cases of cancer and later reappearances of it. According to data from the Ministry of Health, Torrecardenas hospital has seen an increase in oncology cases by 3.7 per cent during the first half of 2018. Health professionals have carried out more than 23,500 oncological consultations, 11,777 radiotherapy treatments and 5,602 chemotherapy treatments. Alongside the new cuttingedge scanner, the hospital will also be improving other oncology facilities, as well as communication systems between departments.

Fugitive felon found
OFFICERS of the National Police in Almeria have arrested a fugitive who was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) for allegedly kidnapping a former drug trafficking partner. The order was issued in France and the suspect is facing a prison sentence of five years for crimes of kidnapping, hostage taking and illegal detention. The detainee fled to Spain after al-
