Crash catastrophe

STANDING TOGETHER: Mourners stand outside the town hall to pay their respects. A GROUP of four tourists on holiday in Tanzania died on Sunday morning when their SUV was crashed into by a lorry on their way to a safari. Three of the victims were women from Malaga, two of whom worked as nurses at the Hospital Clinico Virgen de la Victoria. The fourth of the group was an Italian friend of theirs who had been living in Malaga for many years. As confirmed by the company organis-

ing the safari, Tabia Tours, the deceased h av e b ee n ide ntifie d a s M a ria B e le n J ime n ez , M a ria Vic toria A la e z , J ua na Jimenez, and Sebastien Giordani. There were two other people travelling with them of Tanzanian nationality, the driver and the cook, who were also killed. Reports suggest that the lorry lost the function of its brakes and crashed into their off-road vehicle in the Arusha region.

Electrics shock HOODED robbers have attacked the electronics store of the Portuguese chain Worten in the El Ingenio de VelezMalaga shopping centre, for the second time in a month. The incident occurred at around 7am on Monday and the thieves smashed through the entrance before taking only two minutes to steal dozens of items. The managers of the shop are still in the process of itemising everything that has been taken. An almost identical robbery took place in the store

on August 15, and an investigation is ongoing into the perpetrators of both crimes as to whether it is the same group. In addition, last week two similar robberies took place at two mobile phone stores

located in the La Veronica shopping centre in Antequera (Movistar and Yoigo). The National Police is investigating all robberies and is not ruling out the possibility of one criminal network being behind all of them.

Relatives of the victims were contacted by the Spanish embassy in Tanzania to inform them of the tragedy. On Tuesday at 12pm a minute’s silence was held outside the Velez-Malaga Town Hall, to pay tribute to those that lost their lives. Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, on behalf of the council. He added that there was still no concrete information on the exact cause of the accident, or when the bodies can be repatriated, but that he would let them know as soon as possible.

Building a future A PROJECT to construct 2,386 new h o m e s i n To r r o x , w h i c h h a d b e e n scuppered by the 2008 financial crisis, is back underway. The ‘Puerto Narixa’ plan has a budget of €28.4 million for the development of a site more than one million square metres in size. The area will be divided into 36 estates and is located on the border with Nerja surrounded by olive groves and greenery. Desarrollos Ecosostenibles is the company in charge of the project and is working with a number of other businesses on it, as well as an investment fund. In recent weeks repairs have been carried out to some of the infrastructure that had been built back in 2009 but had been damaged by vandalism. A complete restructuring of the site’s sanitation and irrigation system is set to cost €1.4 million, and new green spaces and sports areas are also planned. T h e s e i n c l u d e o rg a n i c g a r d e n s , a n orchard, a sports centre and a network of walking routes. Initially a nine-hole golf course had been mooted, but it has since been ruled out.
