Political leader attacked in Rincon THE leader of Spain’s Izquierda Unida (United Left) political coalition and his heavily pregnant wife have been attacked near their Rincon de la Victoria home. According to Alberto Garzón - who is also a Deputy in Spain’s Congress for Unido Podemos - a man aged between 45 and 50 approached him and his wife at night. He started to hurl insults and then accused Garzón of ‘wanting to break up Spain,’ rebuked him for his stance on immigration, urging him to welcome immigrants arriving on the Spanish coast into his own home.
Garzón also says the man tried to attack him physically, although no injuries were inflicted. The politician made an official complaint, and Guardia Civil officers made an arrest the following day. A man has appeared in court and has been released with charges.
It is understood Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez contacted Garzón to ask him what happened and to make sure he and his wife were unharmed. Garzón is spending August at the family home in Rincon de la Victoria before resuming his duties in Congress.

National Police were called but the aggressor had left before they arrived. An official complaint has been made, and the man is due to attend court. In April a woman was sentenced to four months jail and fined for attacking a nurse - who was kicked in the chest and a doctor in Velez. And in Andalucia as a whole there are now three attacks a day on medical staff, according to the SMM, although Carmona thinks the situation is much worse as staff often do not report incidents.
