Murdered boy’s ashes scattered By Tara Rippin THE parents of a murdered eight-year-old boy have finally been able to scatter his ashes, six months after his death. Gabriel Cruz’s body was found 13 days after he was first reported missing in the Las Hortichuelas area of Nijar in late February. A month later, a funeral took place, but Judge SoriMURDERED: Gabriel ano prevented the cremation Cruz is now at rest in from going ahead in case ina ‘magical place’ vestigators needed to conduct further tests on the body. Now parents Patricia Ramirez and Angel Cruz have at last been able to place their son’s ashes in the sea at the natural park of Cabo de Gata. In a statement to the press, they said that the area ‘is a magical place in which he will rest while his beloved little fishes take care of him.’ They also stressed that it was a ‘special day since Gabriel has returned to the sea he loved so much.’ In the moving tribute, Gabriels’ parents went on to say that their son is going to a safe place, full of love and good people, adding that the ‘angel of the seas Gabriel has been born.’ Ana Julia Quezada remains the prime suspect in the case after confessing to police that she was behind killing the child. She later wrote open letters to the media from her prison cell in which she admitted to taking the boy’s life, but claimed it was an accident. Quezada said Cruz had insulted her and that she had suffocated him in a fit of rage. An investigation is still ongoing.

Toxic fire at plastics plant By Dilip Kuner CLOUDS of potentially toxic fumes belched out over the El Ejido area when a plastics recycling plant went up in flames. Fifteen people had to be evacuated as a precaution in the middle of the night as firefighters tackled the blaze that turned the night sky orange. The plant located in the Paraje La Molina, went up in smoke on Sunday night. By dawn it had been brought under control. Huge lorry loads of dirt were brought in to bury the fire site in an attempt to ‘damp down’ the blaze and prevent it from flaring up again. At its height the neighbouring A-1050 road had to be closed as smoke billowed over it, dangerously reducing vision. The fire had started at about 6.25pm, according to the emergency services, with more than 30 people dialling 112 to raise the alarm when they spotted flames licking across the plant. A fullly integrated plan was put into action, with firefighters, Guardia Civil, Local Police from El Ejido and La Mojonera, the Infoca forest fire service, health workers and ambulance crews all congregating on

FIRE VISIT: Gracia Fernández Moya saw the scene at first-hand. the spot to ensure the fire was tackled efficiently, and local people were out of danger. There was some concern that the fire could spread outside the plant, so bulldozers and special extra large pumps were brought in from the airport to help extinguish the blaze - a very difficult task given the flammable nature of plastic. The Junta de Andalucia regional government’s delegate

to Almeria, Gracia Fernández Moya visited the site to see at first-hand how the emergency workers were tackling the blaze.
