Diver search PERSONNEL searching for a Velez-Malaga diver who disappeared off the coast of Cadiz Province have been urged to continue the operation following a week of no results. Officers from the Guardia Civil’s underwater branch (GEAS) officially stopped their search for Fidel Jiminez, 23, last Thursday July 26. He disappeared on Sunday July 22 while spearfishing with friends. Helicopters have continued combing the area around the Barbate since then but the 23-year-old has not been seen. Guardia Civil officers resumed searching for a few hours on Monday but the operation had to be called off due to storms. A diving fin believed to have belonged to the 23year-old was found by his friends a few days previously near where he disappeared. Velez-Malaga councillors approved a motion last Tuesday calling on the Guardia Civil and all other relevant bodies to resume the search and to dedicate all necessary resources to finding Jiminez. They also committed themselves to informing the 23-year-old’s family of any further developments, with the Guardia Civil stating they would resume the search once the weather improved. Jiminez had been living in Barbate for around a month at the time of his disappearance. He had moved there to pursue his passion for fishing, his family said.

IN FLIGHT: More than 50 aircraft from across the world took part in the Air Show.

Up in the air By Joe Gerrard MORE than 350,000 people are estimated to have visited Torre del Mar to watch the town’s annual air show last weekend. The International Air Festival, now in its third edition, featured planes from Spain’s air force as well as aircraft from Britain, Canada, Italy and Switzerland. A total of more than 40 planes took part, according to organisers. Pablo Gonzalez, the show’s

director, said the festival was now one of the leading events of its type in Spain. Spectators including plane spotters with cameras descended on the town’s beach to watch the aircraft performed aerobatics and manoeuvres from Saturday morning. Saturday evening saw a fireworks and plane show at around 10pm, with several British aircraft later taking part in the Sunset Air Show. Patrol Plus Ultra, an aerobat-

ics group made up of five planes and founded in Huelva in 2011, kicked off Sunday’s main programme with their routine. It was followed by displays

from the Italian Blue Circe. The event was closed by a Spanish Air Patrol, including a Eurofighter Typhoon, making the Spanish flag out of tail smoke.

Centre claims A MEMBER of a centrist political party sitting in the Andalucian Parliament has called on regional authorities to act on what he claimed was the ‘abandonment’ of Velez-Malaga’s historic centre. Carlos Hernandez White, of Ciudadanos, claimed the centre had been gradually abandoned despite being declared a site of historical interest in 1970. He added around 45 per cent of buildings there were damaged and that the Junta de Andalucia was not doing anything to resolve the issues. “Progressive abandonment has continued uninterrupted since 1970,” Hernandez White said. “The situation has led to a gradual depopulation of the area. It has left some jewels of heritage such as the Monastery of the Carmelites and the Convent of the Claras of San Francisco destitute as a result,” he added. Hernandez White said the PEPRI regeneration body, launched in 2008, had been unable to have an impact due to bureaucracy.
